♢Dating Jubelian is a very cute experience, I’d say, she’s so caring and sweet, she also always shows affection and she’s pretty! So many plus signs.

♢You do have to go through a suspection made by her father, but it’s fine, cause once he accepts you, you’re his child too, so yayyy! One more baby for him to spoil.

♢Random kisses on your cheeks and lips, maybe on knuckles when you’re holding hands around the manor or when you’re walking around the garden.

♢She learnt to make flower crowns when she was young, so she makes tons of flowers crowns for you and even taught you how to make them and so many dates when you both sit in the garden and make flower crowns with each other.

♢She has you sneak in her room so many times, even after Regis had three guards outside on her balcony, you still somehow sneaked her out and they found you both cuddling in one of the extra rooms they have.

“- I know what I have to do.”

Regis’s Expression was calm and resigned as he searched his dear friend’s face. Dettlaff’s expression was solemn and cool and… surprisingly controlled as Regis scanned for all the familiar tics in the dark man's face. 

A heavy moment of quiet surrounded the two higher vampires, unsaid words and understandings looming in the still air. After another silent beat, Regis nodded and crossed his arms in a show of determination, “Alright. What can I do?”

The faintest smile distorted Dettlaff's serious expression, his cold heart warming at the faith Regis held in him. “She needs to know what we are…” He admitted quietly. 

Regis blinked as his head reeled back a bit in surprise, “Dettlaff, are you sure…? Not that I think she’d take it badly, but-” His lips tightened as he glanced away from the conversation, spotting your ignorantly innocent form amongst the flowers, “- but this has the potential to go very wrong…. Even the nicest of folks have turned their torches and swords our way once they knew.” A shadow passed over the higher vampire’s usually optimistic expressions, a memory of darker times coming to the surface for a brief breath. 

“I’m sure,” the stormy man said, feet moving on their own to take him back to the large window. Amelia pointed up toward him, causing you to turn, your face bright with simple excitement as you waved at your ever-watchful protector. Another wave of warmth gripped his heart and pulled his lips into a more significant smile. “I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life.” 

“Besides, time is of the essence…” Dettlaff continued, “Her wound has become infected, and it's spreading fast. It’s already starting to reach toward her heart,” concern laced his tone as he waved back at you, feigning mirth as you watched his face, “and as much as I trust your medicines I don’t know if it can be made and work fast enough to be fully reversed. She’s fading so fast, Regis…”

Regis could hear his friend’s heart breaking with each word, only finally admitting the situation out loud, “I see….” He sighed, “We must have missed some pieces of that old knife when we cleaned out the wound…”, long clean nails tapped his chin as he considered all the options. “I mean, I could try to modify one of the Witcher potion recipes for human use but it would still be a big risk, or we could try to clean it out again and apply a stronger antibiotic…” he mused.

“ Or….” Dettlaff said, his silence saying more than his words could. 

“Absolutely not” Regis replied on instinct, every part of his brain violently against it, “we can’t do that Dettlaff, I can’t condone it”. His silent footsteps paced anxiously over the carpet and he was sure if he walked any faster he would surely see smoke. 

“Regis…” Dettlaff frowned, crossing his arms as he settled into this strange reversal of roles. ���Regis, there’s not another-” 

“There are always other options, Dettlaff!” Regis snapped uncharacteristically, surprise covering his expression as he realized his angrily hunched demeanor and growing claws. “I’m- I’m sorry… I don’t know what came over me….” A strong hand gripped his shoulder, squeezing a gentle comfort as he looked up at his stormy-eyed friend once more. 

“I want to give her the option, Regis. If my blood can save her, if it can make her whole again, then I want her to know about it.” Though Dettlaff didn’t dare mention his other motivations; the thought that maybe- possibly- his blood could extend your lifespan as well. Human lives were so often just a blip in the timeline of his ‘immortality’ and if he could do anything- anything- to make it just make it a few decades longer then he would do it in a heartbeat. 

But he didn’t have to say it, Regis already knew; human or not every creature was greedy in the face of love. A deep sigh escaped his chest as his hand ran down his face, “We have no idea what it’ll do to her… I’ve heard of other higher vampires trying to… essentially turn their loved ones and it’s- “ he paused, “Its risky. All of them went through horrible pain and anguish- most dying in agony while others seemed to eventually even out, though they still did not turn completely.” 

“And I don’t want her to turn… it's her humanity that made me fall first” he quickly replied, “her clumsily kind nature and that ridiculous dopey smile of hers when she sees something she loves…” he trailed off, his mind rolling down an endless list he didn’t possibly have time to name. 

Regis’s expression tightened as he listened, reluctant, but understanding to his friend’s explanation and plea “I -… let’s talk to her tonight… and I’ll do some research in the meantime.” the older man’s voice was tired, and resigned, but still held a sense of duty about it as he began to walk away. 

Dettlaff pulled him to a halt for just a moment as he passed, “Regis, My brother,” the vampire spoke, “I don’t want you to do this because you think there is some debt between us… If you’re adamant…”

A small smile tugged momentarily at Regis’s lips before quickly fading again,” I assure you it is not…. While I will forever feel a debt over the kindness and dedication you showed in rebuilding me from naught but melted flesh, I do this because I can see how important she is to you. And though I can not understand the depths of which you hold your love for her I can say I have come to care for her too as one of our own.” 

Dettlafff’s shoulders eased, releasing the tension they didn’t realize they were holding and sinking into softness as his hand pulled away. “... Thank you, Regis…”

“Of course. Anything for my brother.”

“Just a few more steps, my dear…” Dettlaff urged quietly, though you were obviously only halfway up the grand staircase. His had hovered over the small of your back, anxiously waiting to provide you support as his other hand held your own, proving as much needed leverage. 

Your exhausted body begrudgingly pulled your foot up yet another step as you whined out a complaint, “Dettlaff, I’m too tired for this… why do we have to go up to the library…?” You huffed and puffed, taking a moment’s respite on the current step. 

“Regis and I had something we wanted to talk to you about… show you…” 

“Well, that doesn’t sound concerning at all, does it..?” you quipped between breaths. “Dett… Love, I don’t know if I can do this, would you-”. Swift, strong hands scooped you up without further utterance, holding you securely against his chest as you yelped in surprise. 

“You needn’t even ask…” his low words rumbled pleasant vibrations against the skin of your temple, raising goosebumps along your arms in response. His legs took easy strides as he carried you up the remaining stairs, holding you as if you weighed no more than a stack of books. Your head rested as a comfortable weight against his, your skin boiling hot to the touch, but a welcome sign of life all the same. 

Regis had already set up by the time you arrived. He stood before the high arching windows, flipping quickly through a large tome before replacing it on the mound of books at his side. “Ah, Y/n. Welcome,” he said with that ever-pleasant smile, putting your nerves a little more at ease, “I trust your time in the garden was as pleasant as it looked?” 

A small smile spread from your face to his as Dettlaff rested you on the large blue armchairs, “The bumble bees were out and lazily passing from flower to flower. And it was nice to feel the sun again… but I have a feeling you didn’t call me in here to talk about bees and sunshine.” your eyebrow raised as you looked up at him. 

“Right… Well, you see the reason we asked you in is -”

“I’m here! Hold on, I’m here!�� Came the rushed voice of your dear friend Amelia as she rushed in- her short legs moving a mile a minute. Her figure was partially obscured by a silver tray piled high with fruit-filled pastries and everything you could possibly need for tea. 

“Sorry, I bake when I get nervous….” she explained as she set the tray in front of you, immediately stepping to the side to give the two men the floor once more. 

An uncontrollable chuckle bubbled in your throat at her delightful mannerisms as you shook your head, “No worries, Amelia. But, what would you have to be nervous about?” 

“I- Uh…” Her round face flushed pink as she realized her slip-up, the rosy color extending to the very tips of her ears. Petrified eyes looked over to Regis and Dettlaff in a desperate attempt to be rescued. 

Regis- everyone’s social knight in shining armor- stepped forward at this and held a hand out to ease her, “Miss Y/n, we have not been completely honest with you…” 

A flash of anxiety ran through your eyes as your gaze dashed to your beloved, who- for the first time- had his eyes intentionally cast down away from you. “What do you mean…?” your voice was steady, but you could fear the shakiness would creep in soon. 

“My Dear, please understand that I did not mean to- I mean- yes, I did, but…” a quiet growl of annoyance escaped his throat as he started over, “ I did not want to keep this from you, but for the time it was the best and safest option..” 

Regis nodded, “Y/n, what do you know of monsters..?” 

“Monsters?” your brow creased curiously, “Um, well… some hurt and hunt people and others are more like us and just trying to get by. And long ago people made Witchers to defend us from them…”

A pleasant smile came from Regis as he nodded, “You’re more well-versed than many… and what about vampires?” 

“I- why the hell are we talking about this? What does this have to do with anything?” Your patience was beginning to wear thin as the men continued to beat around the bush.

“Please, moth… Answer the question. I promise we’ll get to the point soon.” Dettlaff quietly pleaded, still refusing to meet your eyes. 

You huffed a bit in annoyance, the pain in your side mounting with the tiredness behind your eyes- but you would oblige. “Um… I don’t know. They need blood to survive, get hurt in sunlight, and turn into bats. And a stake through the heart and some holy water are supposed to kill them, I guess. Now what's the point?” 

“You’re very close,” Regis said, “those facts apply to most vampires, yes. However, higher vampires are different. They look just like any other human and blood is more of a…” Regis’s nose scrunched uncomfortably as he continued. “... a drug, than a necessity. They have other forms and can change between them if they want, but-” 

“Regis, you’re lecturing…” Dettlaff interrupted, 

“But it’s important that she understand the background of it-” Regis began to argue, quickly getting interrupted by Dettlaff who decided there was no time left to drag it on. 

A growl escaped from the stormy-eyed man as his features shifted and scrunched into something far more bat-like; his nails extended like foot-long claws from his hands and his previously dark eyes became a petrifying white. Sharp predatory fangs protruded from his lips as his teeth bared before you. 

A short scream escaped you before your hands could cover your mouth, shock, and fear escaping uncontrollably. “I-I’m sorry I didn’t mean-” 

But your voice escaped you as Regis’s face now changed as well, their features were similar overall, though the details differed. Regis’s ears pointed upwards far more than Dettlaff and his front two teeth extended as an extra pair of fangs for a total of four menacing dagger-like teeth. 

You fought against your nerves as your hands began to shake over your lips, not from a fear that you would be hurt- you knew them far better than that- but a more instinctual fear that any prey feels in the gaze of its predator. “And… and you..?” you gazed at Amelia now.

“Me? Oh, goodness no! I’m as human as it gets… I’m just here for moral support…” she smiled a tiny bit, keeping her gaze away from the monstrous features of the two men in the room, “ they showed me after the bandit incident. But I’m… ah, I’m still getting used to it myself…” she admitted in embarrassment as she kept her gaze away. 

The two men’s composure immediately softened once their new features settled, worry crossing their expressions at your reaction. 

“My Moth…” Dettlaff’s voice was still the same as he took slow steps toward you, kneeling down before your feet, “ I am still the same man you know… I may have hid my vampiric nature, but I have been honest in everything else.” his hand reached out for yours, slow and tender movements to ensure he didn’t scare you off. Careful of his claws he took your hand in his and pressed your palm against his cool cheek. 

“I’m still the same man you fell in love with…” His eyes closed as he subtly nuzzled into your cautious touch, “and I would never dream of hurting you- I still have full control and-”

“I know” you said, “I know you’d never hurt me,” your thumb ran over the creases of his flattened nose, following them down to his mouth of glistening fangs. “I knew I saw something on my first day, and that day with the bandits… but I didn’t let myself believe it,” you tapped the tip of his fang curiously, wincing and recoiling as you pricked your finger.  “Ah- sharp…” you quickly brought your finger to your lips to lick away the drop of blood as Dettlaff laughed softly at you. “It’ll take some time for me to understand everything and get used to seeing you be- ah, ‘batty’ for lack of a better word. But at the end of the day, I’m still honored to be loved by you…” your warm and sincere smile glistened in the dimming afternoon light. 

Dettlaff’s features smoothed back to normal as he let out a sigh of relief and mumbled into your palm “I love you, my Moth… I love you, I love you…” quick, loving kisses peppered your palm as his hands enclosed yours.

Amelia sighed dreamily from behind you, her hands held over her heart as if she was watching the most tremendous wedding of her life. 

“And as happy as I am that you’ve shared this with me, I thought you said this had to do with making me better…?” 

“It does” a now normal-looking Regis answered, “see, each higher vampire has its own special abilities… I tend to put creatures at ease and get along with humans better than most…” He explained.

“And I…” Dettlaff added, “Can heal myself of almost anything…” 

Quietly you looked between the two of them, nodding slowly as you took in the new information, though you were still a little confused at the direct connection. “Okay, so…. You can heal me? I could have been better this whole time?” 

“Its not that simple. See Dettlaff’s blood can make whoever has some regenerate- I myself have experienced it first hand- but I’m already a higher vampire. We have no idea how it would affect you as a human. I’ve been researching for hours and it seems like it’s more of a ‘perfect match’ situation. You’ll go through pain either way, but if you two match it’ll even out and you’’ll be fine… but if you don’t…” 

“I’ll die.” you sighed, “ and what are the other options…?”

“Well, I could try to make a range of potions and salves, but there is also no guarantee that they would work in time for such a late stage infection.”

Silence laid heavy amongst the four of you as all thoughts raced around the room, bated breaths became roaring winds and Amelia’s nervous fidgeting thundered like stampeding feet.

“I…” Everyone looked up to hear the verdict.

“I want Dettlaff to heal me.” you said firmly, “If I run the risk of dying no matter what then I have nothing to lose in choosing this. And I believe we’ll be more than a perfect match.” you said, trying desperately to convince yourself with words you only half believed. You would like to have more faith in it, but you can only believe so much in something that has the same likelihood as the flip of a coin.

Dettlaff’s eyes radiated the truest love known to this world as you spoke; faith, trust, and determination running abound in his gaze as he looked up at you. You would not die in this endeavor, and he would destroy every godly power that dared to think differently.

Regis nodded, quiet and accepting as he began to gather his books, “If that is what you wish, I will be happy to help. We’ll begin tonight in a couple of hours; I would gather your strength and find a comfortable place where you’d like to… recover.” 

Or die.
