John Margolies (American, 1940-2016)
John Samuel Margolies was an architectural critic, photographer, and author who was noted for celebrating vernacular and novelty architecture in the United States, particularly those designed as roadside attractions. For almost forty years, he documented the most remarkable examples he found, publishing some of his discoveries in books and consigning the rest to an archive, which has now been purchased by the Library of Congress who, in a wonderfully gracious move, have lifted all copyright restrictions on the photographs. An Arranged Marriage For The Richest (Derby Harrington X Male Reader)
Tumblr media
Derby life’s goal is to follow his father’s footstep and become as successful as him. Being the heir of an oil digging made his life so much easier. Being the richest of the rich. Buying expensive things a regular person needs to work for in a year or two. That is his life, and it’s all thanks to his father. Because of that, he listens to him dearly, to the point of choosing his future partner, which is Pinky, his cousin. Other people find it weird, but he doesn’t mind it. He does mind how much attention she seeks of him. To his luck, he got a better offer.
“You wish to speak to me, father?”
“Yes.” Inside of his office, Mr. Harrington sits behind his desk while addressing the issue. “I know you got an arranged marriage with your cousin, Pinky. However, we have to cancel that deal, because I found a better offer.”
Derby looks surprised. “Who is it?”
“It’s our rival, Mendez. With this deal, we can fuse the two biggest oil companies in America to become the number one in the world.” Mr. Harrington sounds excited with the plan. “We have dinner with them this Saturday, where you meet your future spouse. That being said, Mendez’s heir is a son as well, so you will be marrying a man, but I don’t expect that being a problem.”
“Of course not.” Derby honestly doesn’t care if he needs to marry off a guy or a girl. All he just wants to do is making his father proud. “Won’t that be a problem with your friends? Your son marrying another man?”
“They have nothing to complain about when we have twice amount the money.” Mr. Harrington assures. “His name is Y/N Mendez, remember that. Make sure to treat him like a gentleman.”
“Of course, father.”
-
With their fancy clothes on, Derby and his father are being driven by their personal chauffeur towards the Mendez’s mansion. It’s around the size of their own, with a gorgeous, well taken care garden. After they parked the car, they get to the gate and grants access to come in. Once at the door, they get greeted by the rich family.
“Mr. Harrington. It’s a pleasure allowing you to come in our house.” Mr. Mendez greets him with an arm. His wife is next to him. “And it’s an honor meeting you, Derby Harrington.”
After fancy introductions, they get in the mansion, seeing the grand entrance of the building. The guests put their jackets away and follow the couple to the dining room. Once there, they see their son.
“Y/N, this is Mr. Harrington, and his son, Derby Harrington.”
“Pleasure meeting you.” Y/N shakes both of their hands.
“Like wise.” Derby says with a handsome smile.
-
After some talking, the five of them sit down at the large dining table. Maids and butlers set down the plates of food that is freshly prepared from the chefs. As they begin eating their fancy food, the five of them chat, mostly about business stuff. Though since both teens doesn’t have much experience with it, they barely talk. That’s why Y/N begins to talk to his future husband.
“Where do you go to school?”
“Bullworth Academy. What about you?”
“Redwood Academy.” Y/N responds. “Isn’t Bullworth that school filled with psychos?”
“Sadly, yes.” Derby replies with a chuckle. “We have poor, poorer, and poorest. Brainless monkey’s without brains and nerds without any spine. I’m lucky I got 8 fellow preps that makes the school less horrible.”
“Sounds rough. My school isn’t any better.” Y/N smiles as well. “We have punks that don’t bother showering. Goths and theater kids that seeks attention. Teens addicted to drugs. It’s honestly sad that schools nowadays allow people like that on their ground.”
“I wholeheartedly agree. How about hobbies?”
“Swimming, poker, martial art. I’m considering shooting in the future.”
“Looks like we got the same interests as well.” The blonde says with a smirk. “I’m more of the art of boxing myself. It’s something my group takes pride in. My dearest friend, Bif, managed to secure us countless trophies.”
“Sounds like you’re real close with your friends. I’m guessing you’re their leader?”
“That is a good guess.” Derby complements him. “Let me take a guess as well. You’re one as well?”
“Of course. I’m inheriting my father’s company. I need to prove myself and others I can be a leader.”
Derby can share the same settlement. He didn’t expect connecting with his future husband this well. Pinky, for example, he finds her just annoying and demanding. Y/N, however, is someone he can relate to, and thus respect. He’s glad his father got this deal, because he would rather spent his future with someone like Y/N instead of Pinky.
-
Ever since that day, the two continue to get to know each other. Mostly by their parents setting up dinner parties and other events. Though they do meet up unofficially after school. They have been going steady, to the point Derby wants Y/N to meet his best friend, Bif.
“I didn’t know you liked the gents.”
“I blame Pinky for that.” Derby says with a chuckle. “Besides, if it’s an arranged marriage with someone’s son that owns another oil company. Luckily for me, he isn’t annoying.”
“Sounds like true love.” Bif sarcastically comments. “Don’t you think you should’ve describe him on what you like about him, or his personality.”
“I like about him that he isn’t annoying.”
Bif sighs, but smiles. “I would love to meet him.”
“Good. I bring him at the gym after school. Make sure not to be drenched in sweat.”
-
Bif leans against the ring as he awaits for his friend. As he looks at the entrance, he spots the blonde walking in, holding Y/N’s hand. Bif stands up and walks over to them.
“Bif, this is Y/N, my fiancé. Y/N, this is my best friend, Y/N.”
“It’s great to meet you. Derby told a lot about you.”
“I can say the same.” Bif makes sure to not mention about Derby’s comment about Y/N not being irritating. “Fiancé, huh? So it’s set in stone.”
“Well, there are some stuff our parents need to figure out, but I have zero doubts that won’t work out.” Derby says with a smile to his boyfriend.
“We hope to get wed after we graduate. Our plans are to study about running a company, but once that done, we’re CEO’s of the biggest oil company in the world.” Y/N says with a proud smile.
“Now we have to take care of Saudi Arabia and Chine, but let’s be honest, it’s only inevitable we have a war with them.” Derby adds.
“Which brings more profit.” Y/N also adds.
Bif can tell they’re meant to be together. “You two will be a great couple.”
“Thank you.” Derby replies. “Of course you will be invited to the wedding, as well the rest of the group.”
“Hey, how about we ask Bif for advice?”
“Hm? What can I do?”
Y/N looks back at him. “We’re discussing where to hold our marriage. We’re thinking about Paris, New York City, London-”
Bif continues to hear Y/N rambling about the most expensive wedding revenues with tens of options.
-
Months has passed, and the marriage is about to begin. They finally settle it down at The Biltmore Estate in North Carolina. It’s a bit smaller than they wanted it to be, but it’s good enough. Inside of the large mansion, Derby awaits in his room as he looks at himself through the mirror. Besides him is Bif, also wearing a tux.
“You look fine.”
“I don’t want to look fine. I want to look perfect.” Derby looks at himself with paranoia. “I feel like something is off. Suit fits perfectly… hair is well done…” He mutters to himself as he goes from one thing to another. “Face looks handsome…”
“You’re just nervous.”
“I’m not.” Derby assures. He turns around and looks at his back.
“Yes, you are.” Bif grabs his friend’s shoulder, forcing him to look at him. “You’re just about the marry the guy you love and spend the entire life with. This is natural. My dad felt the same way before the divorce.”
“That doesn’t make any sense. I’m beyond happy this is happening.”
“Doesn’t mean you can’t be nervous.” Derby remains quiet. “Look, you look perfect. Even without your tux, you do. I know. I talked plenty of times with Y/N. He loves you, a lot. He’s like another version of you.”
Derby smiles after feeling stressed. “He’s probably stressing about this too.”
“I would bet on it. Now, let’s calm down and prepare your speech.”
-
Soon the marriage starts. There was a major discussion between the two family who is the man in the relationship and after a while, Derby and Y/N stepped in that they both will be. So, they stand at the altar. Derby stands with his father and his best friend, and Y/N has the same at his side. Between them is the marriage officiant, who had a speech to address the merry couple. In the audience, there are friends of both spouses, as well their father’s coworkers and friends. Some of them are more… traditional to say the least, but the fathers still thought it was a good idea to invite them just to see the look of their faces when they see one of the biggest companies in the country fusing together.
After the speech, it’s time to have both spouses to say their vows, starting with Y/N.
“I know it isn’t a long time since we met, but ever since that dinner party, I had a gut feeling you are the one. And standing here today, that gut feeling isn’t just a feeling, it’s a fact. I’m glad I’m going to spend my entire life with someone that I can relate to. Someone ambitious, strong, smart and kind. I’m inspired by you and have the motivation to make this marriage better one day after another, as well our future companies, as CEO’s.”
Then it’s Derby’s turn. “I have to say, you took the words right from the mouth. The first day we met, I know we end up together. And like you said, we’re perfect. In general and together. As a Harrington, it’s an honor to marry a Mendez. Not just as a company, but also as life partners. I make sure to treat you well, and when the time comes, make sure to stand by your side when things get tough, as you will do with me.”
And so, the rings get passed. Each spouse having the same kind of expensive diamond ring to give each other. When done, they look at each other with a smile.
“I, Derby Harrington, take me Y/N Mendez as my lawfully wedded husband in sickness and in health till death parts us.”
“I, Y/N Mendez, take me Derby Harrington as my lawfully wedded husband in sickness and in health till death parts us.”
“May you know kiss the groom.”
And so, the two are officially husband and husband, with the entire room clapping. In the audience, the preps are beyond happy for their leader.
“They’re so perfect…” Gord begins to tear up. “They’re the IT couple.”
“May our- I mean mine wedding be like this.” Chad reacts with awe.
“They better not divorce like their parents.” Bryce points out.
Everyone is beyond happy, except Pinky, who’s feeling salty. “This could’ve been mine wedding!”

How long do you think Redwood will be on Broadway? I can see it being there for at least 3 years (obviously I hope more than that) for many reasons with one being it’s an original story. In other words, it’s not based on a film or book or television show. Also, something important (and cool) to note: Redwood is an immersive experience musical. It manages to engage the audience with beautiful moving imagery on a screen which is something a musical has never done before. I’ve noticed immersive experiences are becoming increasingly popular during this decade, so from a marketing perspective, it was a smart decision to go that route for a musical. Way to stay on trend @ whoever’s idea that was! A second thing to note: Idina will literally be climbing trees! I'm so happy that it got the green light to air on Broadway.
I’m so excited to see it! Are you going?
Idina may not have been that girl in Wicked, but she is That Girl™ in the Broadway community. I can be funny sometimes. The immersive incorporation and watching Idina Menzel climb trees while she is singing already puts Redwood at the top of the musical theater chain, so the two things that will make or break this show is the songs and the number of ticket sales per show. That all being said, I'm going to say that I can see Redwood reaching its fifth anniversary. I do hope, too, though, that it will be on Broadway for more than five years. It sounds like an incredible show to watch!
My friend and I are planning a trip to New York next year, and if all goes well, then we're looking at going in March or April! When are you going?

I Like Your Laugh
Pokémon
N - Black/White
The first time you’ve ever heard him laugh like that
Whenever you ran into him it was always some serious sort of moment, or at least his tone always made it feel serious. It wasn’t that he was a genuinely emotionless person, rather he just didn’t tend to express his emotions the same way as other people. What he didn’t show in his voice or expressions though came out in a variety of other ways, like how he spoke a bit faster to you than others (even if he always spoke quickly anyhow), or the even smaller things like holding doors or spoiling your Pokémon with gifts. In short it would take only the truly oblivious to miss how much he cared.
The ducklett in the stream before you were happily playing amongst the reeds, orange fading to soft purples and grays as the twilight set in. You and N had simply been walking along the water, enjoying mild conversation and each other’s company.
“Tell me friend, why is it you chose that one as your partner anyway? I always mean to ask but, my mind tends to wander and lose its place.” He was referring to the galvantula at your side, whenever you hung out with him you liked to keep at least one of your Pokémon out alongside you. It just felt right to do.
“It’s a dumb reason-! You don’t wanna hear it man.” Laughter was bubbling just beneath the surface of what you said as he gave one of his usual sorts of little half smiles.
“Oh is it now?” Uh oh, you know him well enough to know that mischievous glint in his eyes. He turned to the big yellow bug type and simply continued with whatever point he intended to make.
“Should I just ask you then? I mean surely you must know their reasoning.” His actions earned him a falsely dramatic reaction.
“Noooo!!! You don’t wanna know I mean it!! It’s so dumb!” You can’t help but try to jokingly shove him away from your Pokémon, which he doesn’t seem to mind. One of the ducklett from nearby gave a little quack as its own way of laughing at the hi-jinks before it. A soft breeze in the air carried with it the soft smell of redwoods and the coolness of the evening.
“Well you continuing to dodge the question only makes me more curious you know.” Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how playful he really is beneath all that calm and collect personality. Tilting his head to the side as if he is perfectly innocent in his jests and pestering he gives you the trademark smile you've come to expect. It's always like this, him poking just the right buttons to make you open up, usually for his own entertainment, but it's always meant well. Or at the very least, for as long as you've known him it has been.
"Uuuggghhhghghh F I N E. But if I tell you you're not allowed to tell anybody- and I mean it!!" You pouted a bit in more false dramatics, honestly you really should be in the theater business with such talent. Watching him for a reaction you see him nod, for all intents and purposes he genuinely looked like he meant it too.
"I got a joltik shortly after I saw one of the Subway Bosses lead a little line of them safely across the tracks okay? He mentioned that they were infesting the tunnels in record numbers that year soooo I offered to take in one of them. It's dumb an-" Before you could make your attempt to deflect how much you loved the unorthodox way of meeting your partner you were interrupted by a small snicker. Honestly at first you thought you were being pranked by some ghost type, it wasn't until you glanced back over at your friend that you saw him trying to stifle a laugh. At last your dramatic denial of happiness falters and you find yourself laughing as you point to him.
"You jerk you're totally laughing at me-!" That only made him slip further into his little onslaught of sudden giggling and it wasn't much longer before he let out a full on laugh that left tears in the corners of his eyes. It was the first time you've ever really seen him laugh, let alone to such an extent. Quite unfortunately his laugh proved to be as contagious as the common cold. Soon enough the two of you were fighting for breath as the sun finished setting. With a big sigh as he finally calmed down he looked up at the stars now beginning to twinkle in the sky above.
"Apologies- I just never took you to be the type to fall for that." His comment made your face scrunch up in confusion, which he clearly noticed based on his mischievous little grin making an all too pleased return.
"Oh don't tell me you didn't know-! Whenever Emmet starts getting in trouble with his twin for hoarding too many of the little bugs around he says that silly line to anyone that'll listen in an effort to sneak them out of the subway." The look on your face must have been utterly hilarious because that laugh you were determined to hear more of going forward came right back to haunt you.
"You're so mean!!! Man- you're lucky I like your laugh otherwise I'd have half a mind to let my big buggy buddy here shut you up real fast." You own laugh once again joined his as the two of you just walked off with no particular destination in mind. His laugh was nice, and all too contagious, but then again what else are friends for?

october 2018, mechanic falls, maine, the mill caught fire and the town gathered on the bridge to watch. a pluming pillar of black smoke seen from the sky. children lifted up on shoulders to get a better view. the lapping flames, the wall of heat, the endless procession of firetrucks like a parade.
i was with them, on the bridge over the river watching the mill burn. and i saw the ladders on the fire trucks lift high up into the air, hoses uselessly spitting water onto the mass of fire. i wondered if watching a town, a city fall into fire was a shared part of humanity, like gathering on a hillside  to watch rome or london or edo be razed and ravaged by flame.
an entire countryside caught like dry kindling. a melting country, black out drunk around a campfire, singing wagon wheel poorly plucked on an out of tune guitar. watching with glee as the redwood forests are ripped out of the soil by winds. kneeling over an ant hill with a magnifying glass. watching a betta fish smash up against the side of a bowl to attack a mirror.
and it’s all the same, right? the world is a stage. the theater is on fire  and the emergency exits are choked by flame. flicking a smoldering cigarette stub into a gas can. the truism of a thirteen year old boy in 2010 with a poster of heath ledger’s joker taped onto the concrete wall of his room in the unfinished basement.
some people just want to watch the world burn. and on the bridge over the burning mill in a sleepy mill town in Maine i am one of them. i am mesmirized, watching the consumption and destruction and i am like a toddler with an ipad.

In the Shady Dell forest in Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, many of the ancient redwoods are shaped like candelabras. Whereas redwoods typically grow straight up, stressors caused these trees to sprout branches near the ground that droop like velvet ropes in a theater. Then when conditions improved, the branches grew straight up. The 2.3-mile Peter Douglas Trail, created in 2016, provides access to these amazing trees.

The end of the year celebrations arrived and with them the famous Harvesfest Pantomime, Rose played the violin as it was customary more than 30 years ago and this year the theme was Renaissance Tartosa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entire Redwood Family had attended the pantomime, even Edgar and Madeleine had attended that night. Despite the mourning, Clara, Amber and Percy had been able to attend to celebrate the end of this fateful year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evangeline still wasn't talking to her cousins, she was watching them out of the corner of her eye from across the theater, hoping that Amber would understand her situation and they would get back in touch.
Tumblr media
At this time of the year it is always common to see apparitions of different empty seats at the back of the theater. It is historically believed that these apparitions are of deceased family members who watch over the happiness of their loved ones.

HAPPIESTPLACEHQ Task 5 - Family
Describe your character’s family
Do they know their family? Were they raised by them?
Olivia knows her most direct family members, that being her parents and grandparents. She has no cousins, uncles or aunts, at least none that she knows of. Hazel Flaversham, her mother, disappeared mysteriously and without a trace when Olivia was an infant: nobody knows if it had been voluntarily or not. This event threw Olivia's father, Hiram Flaversham, into a paranoid phase (which one might say he never fully overcame) during which he began fixating nearly obsessively on Olivia's safety and whereabouts, to make sure she wouldn't disappear like her mother did. And then, a few years later, it was Hiram's turn to disappear...
Olivia's contact with her paternal grandparents, Richard and Patricia Flaversham, was quite brief and distant, what with Hiram's tense relationship with them. Richard and Patricia had been the ones to insist on meeting semi-regularly with their granddaughter, even if they still rejected Hiram as their son. After Hiram decided not to join the family business and came out to them as bisexual, back when he was just starting as a college student at a business school, his already crumbling relationship with his parents was finally destroyed. Hiram and his father had a big fight and falling out, and despite Patricia's constant attempts at convincing her son to apologize, go back to business school and follow in his father's steps as head of his company, he had made up his mind. Even if it didn't bring in much money, he would follow his dreams to become an artist, a sculptor and inventor. His bohemian lifestyle shifted slightly when his girlfriend Hazel, a similarly free-spirited writer and theater critic, turned up pregnant, and they decided to keep the child and make sure she was raised in a more stable environment. Hazel herself, a New Zealander living in Edinburgh, tried to pursue a career as a professional writer while raising little Olivia, though she went missing before she could become a published author. After more than a decade, Hiram still secretly wonders if she had walked out on them, and often goes over his last memories of her, to try and find out any possible reason for why she might have left.
When Olivia moved to Invercargill with her father, after his disappearance and eventual rescue, she often stayed with her maternal grandparents, Anne and Phineas Browne. They both cared for their granddaughter while Hiram was away from home, trying for jobs and finishing college to get a degree in engineering. Olivia became very close to them and considers them a second set of parents. Even Hiram ended up seeing them as surrogate parental figures, warm, caring and loving as they were, and supportive of their son-in-law and granddaughter's dreams and projects, wherever they may take them.
What was your character’s relationship like with their parents?
Olivia and her father are very close, though sometimes Olivia wishes she could be a little more independent. For the last few years Hiram has slowly been accepting that he needs to let his daughter become her own person and forge her own path, mostly for her happiness though also partly to make sure he doesn't become just like his parents, controlling and authoritative. However, now that she's an adult, Olivia has been wondering if she should move out of Redwood Hollow, where her father has already happily settled down and found a good job, and follow a career in criminology in a bigger city that could pose more of a challenge. This would mean leaving her father behind, which, while originally a goal she had in order to become self-sufficient, now has her doubting whether she can truly manage, knowing herself to still be perhaps a bit too trusting and naïve to face life in a city on her own.
If they weren’t raised by their parents, who raised them? Do they consider the people that raised them to be their family?
Partly raised by her maternal grandparents, Olivia definitely considers them her family. She loves them dearly and are one of the aspects of her life in Invercargill she misses the most.
Overall, how did the idea of family affect your character?
Family is very important to Olivia, but over time it has slowly lost its status as her priority and main source of relationships. Even with how much she misses her maternal grandparents, she finds she misses her friends just as much, and as part of her efforts to make a name for herself apart from her father, she's been trying to focus more on herself and on her own wants and needs.
Thinking about the future, do they want to make a family of their own? What would that look like to them?
Olivia isn't very much interested in having a family of her own. From a couple jobs as a babysitter, she learned she isn't the best at dealing with kids and would much rather she didn't have to interact with them too often. Apart from that, she has never been one to fantasize with romance and marriage and would much rather have a bunch of friends to call her family than searching for a supposed other half.

A wooden record crate I made a little bit ago!
Tumblr media
I was starting to gather a lot of vinyls and up until now I was using a USPS box that didn't really fit them. So when I out grew that, I decided I really wanted a cool, wooden record crate. Looking online, the nice ones were upwards of $50!!! I thought, "I could probably do that. I did set construction and planning for Theater in High School and made a trebuchet in Middle School!"
More Details and Pictures below the cut!
I did research online of what people have used for record crates in the past. One I really liked was New Zealand ABC Swappa Crates. Their design was industrial, customizable, and simple. Read Read 2
Tumblr media
I quickly measured a typical record sleeve and drew up a schematic.
Afterwards, I headed to the hardware store to buy wood. After marveling at all the wood types, I eventually settled on redwood, for its local-ness and icon-status in California, its pretty, soft red color, and its interesting inconsistency in its grain. (Plus it was cheaper than most other woods :') ). It was pretty soft compared to other woods, and prone to splitting, so I had to just be careful using the predrill/countersink I also bought there.
I'm extremely happy with it, and plan to do some other things, such as considering a nice stain and wood burning my name and the date into it, but that's for later. I'd be willing to make another as a commission because it was really fun to plan and make!

most magical places in the world
ok since i have not been to everywhere in the world to say conclusively here are two wildly incomplete lists
places i have been that are magical:
the appalachian mountains
times square when it’s really quiet like at 7 on sunday morning
the pantheon in rome
the beach at sunrise
the grocery store parking lot when the sky is just doing the absolute most
the extra deep shadow under the trees at dusk where you can see all the fireflies
a park when it’s snowing and everything is unnaturally quiet and you can see the snow falling through the street lights
in a crowd or a theater where there’s a big group of people and everyone is just absolutely dead silent in anticipation
waterfalls
your favorite bar or friend’s house when it’s getting late but you’re having such a nice time talking that surely it can’t be that late time must be working differently somehow because it’s three in the morning
places i haven’t been that i think would be magical:
the grand canyon
those super protected places where there’s no light pollution and you can see all the stars
california redwoods
next to a blue whale
outer space
standing on a glacier
the stillness of the eye of a hurricane

Flying East (No. 3)
Despite its urban character, the San Francisco Bay is one of California's most ecologically sensitive habitats, providing important ecosystem services such as filtering the pollutants and sediments from rivers and supporting a number of endangered species. In addition, the Bay Area is known for its stands of coast redwoods, many of which are protected in state and county parks. The region is additionally known for the complexity of its landforms, the result of millions of years of tectonic plate movements. Because the Bay Area is crossed by 6 major earthquake faults, the region is particularly exposed to hazards presented by large earthquakes. The climate is temperate and conducive to outdoor recreational and athletic activities such as hiking, running, and cycling. The Bay Area is host to 6 professional sports teams and is a cultural center for music, theater, and the arts. It is also host to numerous higher education institutions, including research universities such as Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley. Home to 101 municipalities and 9 counties, governance in the Bay Area involves numerous local and regional jurisdictions, often with broad and overlapping responsibilities.
