Ballister | Chapter 10

Prologue | Last Chapter | Next Chapter

Nimona and Ballister kept a low profile for a couple of weeks as the news of the video spread like wildfire with protesters and a rebellion starting to brew.

During this time, Nimona and Ballister got to know each other more.

◇

Nimona and Ballister were making dinner in the kitchen while having a conversion.

“So, what’s the world beyond the wall like?” Nimona asked Ballister as they were making homemade pizza. “Since you’ve mentioned that you’ve been beyond the wall.”

Ballister thought for a moment before answering, “Well, it’s… more open than here. Also more colorful. More grass, trees and plants. There are also mountains! Oh! And rivers too!”

“Mountains? Rivers? What are those?” Nimona asked as she put some toppings on her pizza.

“Hm… mountains are big rocks that are connected to the earth and can’t be moved. Well, by a human. Rivers are normally large natural streams of water that normally lead to lakes, oceans, or another river which is also called a stream.” Ballister explained, putting on a lot of cheese on his pizza.

“I’ve read about those.” Nimona said when they finished putting the toppings on the pizza. “Aren’t oceans huge bodies of water? Like 70% or 80% of the world?" 

“Yep.” Ballister said, looking at Nimona. "Well, there's more earth under the water but yeah!"

Nimona hummed softly as she put the two pizzas in the oven. “Very interesting.” she said as she closed the oven door.

Ballister nodded as he got a timer set.

They both went out of the kitchen and sat down on the couch.

“What’s one of your favorite things to do when you're out there?” Nimona asked as they sat down on the couch.

“Oh, I have a lot! One of my favorite things is looking at the stars at night.” Ballister said with a soft chuckle.

“Really?” Nimona asked, looking at the teen.

“Yeah… You don’t really see a lot of stars in the night sky here, because of the light pollution.” 

“What do the stars look like in the sky without light pollution?”

Ballister thought again for a moment before answering, “Diamonds. They look like shiny diamonds when light hits them just right.”

Nimona nodded softly, imagining what Ballister was describing what the outside world may look like while also imagining what the stars would look like without light pollution.

It was beautiful.

Nimona hummed softly and then they talked more about the outside world and the different things out there.

“I have two questions for you.” Ballister started, looking at Nimona as they still waited for the timer to go off. “If you don’t mind me asking.”

Nimona looked at him and nodded. “Go ahead.”

"First one, did you ever had a pet?" Ballister asked, tilting his head to the side.

Nimona nodded and replied, "Yes. Well, sort of. My pet was a horse. At the Institute, the cadets were taught that knights always need their horse. By the age of 15, I was given my horse, which was a huge black stallion. I named him Ares, since he didn't have a name when I got him. We were very good together."

Ballister hummed and nodded. "Cool. Ares is a cool and scary name."

"That's one of the reasons I named him that. He was cool and the others were a bit scared of him but not me." Nimona said with a soft laugh.

Ballister chuckled softly and nodded before going quiet. “So... What was your family like?” Ballister asked.

The burnt knight was quiet as she tried to think about how to explain her family to Ballister.

“Well… I technically have two families before the Institute. The Redrose family and the Crimsonthorn crime family." Nimona started, looking at Ballister. "Do let me know if I go over the line but... Phoenix and Jordan Redrose, my parents, were great."

Nimona noticed that Ballister was going to ask something but she interrupted, "If you're going to ask how I was made, don't. It's rude and gross."

That got Ballister to close his mouth and gave a small nod. 

Nimona sighed softly before chuckling, "Even though I wasn't my dad's blood, he treated me like I was his. Both my mom and dad were happy to have me in their life and I was happy to have them."

"Do you have a photo of them?" Ballister asked.

Nimona nodded and got out her phone, getting the photo up. "Here." she said, handing the teen the phone to show the photo.

It was an old photo of a man and a woman, holding a 5 year old Nimona.

The man was thin, had dark kind eyes, and dark brown hair that went to his ears. He was wearing light green squire clothing. 

The woman was curvy, had light brown hair, and hazel eyes (Almost like Nimona). She was wearing a leather apron over a red dress.

5 year old Nimona was wearing blue overalls over a purple shirt.

They were all happy and smiling.

"Wow!" Ballister exclaimed when looking at the photo, which made Nimona chuckled softly. As Ballister hands the phone back to Nimona, he asked, "What happened to them?"

The Burnt knight frowns softly as she put her phone away and start to continue, "I lost them at a young age. Like 6 or 7 years old... I was taken in by my biological dad's family... As you probably know, Hugo, my biological dad, was part of a crime family. They had the most power in the crime world. The ‘machine that made the crime world goes round’ Hugo would say. They were famous and well known for a lot of things… The most famous thing about the Crimsonthorns was that they… they killed…” Nimona trailed off as she hugged herself.

Ballister hummed softly and nodded. “I guess you didn't like that.”

“Yeah… tell me to stop if it gets too much but… When I was growing up, sometimes all I heard was the screams when I was asleep…” Nimona explained, looking down as she remembered the memories. 

“That’s scary.” Ballister said, sounding sad.

Nimona nodded and added, “It was… It scared me. It scared me so much that I didn’t want to be in the family business. Didn’t want to be the villain or monster…” 

“Is that why you wanted to become a knight?” Ballister asked, tilting his head to the side a bit.

“Yes… I wanted to do good. But I was told by my two aunts, two uncles, my grandmother, and dad that being the villain, or monster, was in my blood. ‘Once everyone sees you as a villain or monster, that’s what you are. They only see you one way, no matter how hard you try.’ they would say…” Nimona said, hugging herself before smiling sadly. “Heh… I guess they were somewhat right since half of the kingdom still thinks that I’m the true villain… I should have never been a knight…”

Ballister frowns and shakes his head. “That’s not true.” 

Nimona looked at him as the teen got up, went to his satchel, grabbed his phone, and came back.

“I’ve seen clips of your training and you are pretty good.” Ballister said as he sat down, getting his phone on and showing Nimona some clips of her training. “By the looks of it, you work your butt off to show that you were good and a worthey knight. Even now, you’re good.”

Nimona looked at the clips that were being played on the phone and couldn’t help but smile a soft happy smile. “You’re right.” she hummed softly, looking back at Ballister. “Thanks.”

Ballister smiled back as he turned off his phone.

Then the timer went off.

“Oh! Pizzas ready!” Ballister said, getting up and ran to the kitchen.

“Alright. Just set the pizzas down when they’re out of the oven. So they can cool off.” Nimona called out to him as she got up.

“Got it! Thanks for the reminder!” Ballister said, giving a thumbs up to her as he entered the kitchen.

Nimona was about to follow him but stopped when looking at the family painting of fourteen.

She glared at it as she walked over to it.

“I know what you all think of him. A monster. But he’s not.” Nimona said to the people of the painting, her voice low whisper growl. “The reason I know is because you all taught me what a real monster is.”

Then she walked away from the family portrait and went to the kitchen to eat some food.

Gloreth was in her quarters.

She was watching the news on the tv, which had three photos of Nimona, Ballister, and The Director while the reporter on the screen asked, “Still reeling from the monster attack, the Kingdom is also still rocked by footage of the Director making a truly shocking confession. But the question still remains, who is the real villain?” 

Gloreth glared at the photo of The Director as she got up and turned the tv off.

She went to her window, gently pulled the curtains away to see down on the ground there the protesters and rebellion.

‘This is getting out of hand…’ Gloreth thought. Then she remembers that she’s the captain of the guards and knights.

Gloreth was leading some of the shocked and outraged knights to The Director’s office.

She and the knights got to the doors of The Director’s office.

“Director!” Gloreth shouted as she slammed the door open and she entered the room with the knights.

There were books scattered across her desk and images of Ballister in his various forms pulled up on screens of The Director’s computer.

But The Director wasn’t there.

Gloreth and the knights looked around the room to see that there was a secret door that led down an ancient stairwell.

“With me.” Gloreth said to the knights as they went down the stone stairwell.

When they got to the bottom of the stairwell, there in front of them was a dank, cavernous library of the Institute’s most ancient possessions.

It was all medieval. 

No modern upgrades.

Just antiquated stacks full of old books and old parchment scrolls that are thousands of years old.

They carefully walked around the antiquated stacks until they found The Director by a desk, looking at something by the lamp that was on the desk, lighting up the room a bit.

Gloreth started to give an order, “Director Yvonne, you’re under arrest. For the murder of the Queen. And for-” 

“Gloreth!” The Director interrupted, turning around to look at Gloreth and the knights. The Director was holding an unrolled old parchment scroll.

“This explains everything.” The Director said, showing the scroll to Gloreth.

The golden knight looked at the scroll and her eyes widened in horror when looking at the scroll.

It was about Ambrosius and his monster.

After grabbing the scroll from the Director, all that Gloreth could think was, ‘I need to warn Nimona. She's in danger!’

This is my OC Lucida. Originally, I created her as a way to read self inserts for the Undertale fandom stories, but I feel like I may use her in a book eventually as well.

She is still under development, but here is what I have for her character traits:

Even though she is technically a monster, I'd like to imagine that she has a very kind soul. Earlier sketches of her have her soul drawn with a bright green outline.

i just had a genuine, mature conversation with two 12-year-olds about Flanagan possibly killing off Halt.

one of them said “the only reason i’m reading these books at this point is to see if he ever kills off Halt”

and the other looked her dead in the eye and said, “if the 80-year-old King-dude is still alive and thriving, Flanagan would never ever have the NERVE to kill off Halt"

Hello! First off, I love your blog! Second off, I have a burning question:

Have you read The Royal Ranger series, and if so, would you recommend it?

Like many RA lovers, I have read the original series a hundred times, but I have only read the first one/last of RA of The Royal Ranger series.

(spoiler warning for those who are first time RA readers that haven't finished the series; I don't recommend reading this Ask further)

I'm still heartbroken that Alyss died... and I can't seem to get over it, although I see Flanagan's reasoning behind it for The Royal Ranger. STILL. WHY HER!? 😭😭😭

Anyway, I've recently thought about giving it a chance and would like your opinion on the series, if at all possible.

To answer your question, I’ve honestly only read half of RR2. I keep meaning to finish it but then I get distracted with another book. So I’m unfortunately not the best person to ask. What I do know, is that @redrose-arrow is the BEST person to ask lol

Like you I felt burned by Alyss dead (I’m so sorry, that pun wasn’t intentional) and it took me a while to even pick Royal Ranger up again. So while I definitely plan on finishing the series, I haven’t gotten around to it

It’s been a week since I reread The Burning Bridge. Here’s a few things I’m still not over:

Will copying Halt in every manner possible and Halt having to physically move his face out of side to hide his smile. 

the ‘sir’ scene. I, for one, would be willing to call Gilan ‘sir’ every time of the day. 

Gilan literally being Horace’s biggest fan. 

Will’s character development in growing more confident, and Halt and Gilan aiding him in that. also, Horace. 

Gilan is consistent in one thing and one thing only and that’s showing up in KING DUNCAN’S WAR COUNCIL TENT with both the best and the worst new information. 

speaking of, David being so. done. with his son. and looking at Halt. who just shrugs. like yeah, neither dad knows what he’s doing. 

“burn the bridge”

Chubb being an icon during wartime, once again. 

the absolute devastated grief that Gilan and Halt shared when they had to wait for the battles to start and couldn’t just go look for Will. 

everyone thinking Halt is dead and then when Gilan arrives saying “Halt says” everyone going wHAT?!?!?!??!?!?!!?

David saying ‘don’t make me stop you, Halt. we’ve been friends far too long’ - like YEAH THEY HAVE

I think it’s a little sad that Morgarath never knew that Halt didn’t just KNOW the Ranger’s apprentice Morgarath had kidnapped, but that it was HIS apprentice. Imagine the PURE RAGE if Morgarath had found out that HALT’S APPRENTICE OF ALL PEOPLE had burned down the bridge. 

first, Rodney adopting Teacher Mode and letting Horace right up with him. then him adopting Parent Mode when he saw how hurt he was. 

ARALD MISSING WILL TOO. 

that one final scene that I refuse to think about.

My brother had the first 3 books, didn't like them enough to keep reading them. When he grew older I got all his old books, loved them, started reading them. Wrote my very first 'fanfic'(it's 'fanfic' bc I meant it to be an original story but when I reread it I realised I had just taken RA and changed the characters names) asked for one every x-mas/birthday until I had all of the current published ones. Read them as they came out. Books never stopped coming, so I never stopped reading them. Found redrose on instagram. Was a big fan for long, went to RA day where I got an oakleaf, found some irl people who recognised it, liked it too (not on my level though, plus they were mostly just acquaintances) found fandom alive and kicking on the blr, here I am.

How did you discover the series?

I owe John Flanagan a huge thank you. I was looking through names and trying to find a book that might interest me, "I'm not a reader, I only listen to scary stories in youtube."

Then I saw someone comment. "Check out Ranger's Apprentice." Then finding the ruins of Gorlan and how it reminded me of Assassin's Creed chaaracter....in some way. so I'm like. "Why not give it a try, see what happens."

From this moment I started to dive into novels and I discovered many more. This series is very special to my heart because of this. I just wish I found it earlier.

currently watching: I’m rewatching The Dragon Prince to catch up my knowledge for S4!! Love this show so much. Such comfort (she says, then cry about the angst) Also! I started The Sandman just recently. I love the setting so much omg. The characters, aesthetics, filming and pacing are amazing (well I love good omens so I knew I’d love this too)
