i know you get asked this probably 16 times a day but as a fellow artist who usually paints based off of references of real pics and trying to be somewhat realistic. how did you develop your style? did it take awhile, or was it pretty immediate? did you start out doing mediums like painting and drawing and transition to digital or was it always digital? final question: do you have any “tips” or “words of wisdom” for silly people like me who wanna try digital art but never have and because i never have im too scared to try…? sorry for the elephant stampede of questions i just really love your art and would love to know YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS!!! DON'T BE SCARED OF THE SWITCH TO DIGITAL!! it's so fun and the undo button will change your life... come take my hand... my biggest tip is to watch speedpaints! that was really huge for me when making the switch. find artists with styles close to yours & pay attention to their steps (how many layers they have, how they do lineart, do they use overlays, etc). if you do this a lot, you can get a clearer sense for how the digital workflow/process can look for you

i feel like kind of a pompous asshole discussing my own "style" or whatever 😭😭 my silly yaoi fanart 😭😭 but i do want to answer your questions!!! i started out drawing traditionally but i transitioned to digital when i was 16. and for a very long time i was one of the people who drew with my finger on my iphone .......i def get the most questions about my style & the unsatisfying answer is that it's pretty much always been there. it's evolved over time in a way i can't really describe so i'll show it visually

ART PIECE REDRAW (2024 vs. 2021, ft. spooky extra addition)

I literally have sooo much to say about this,, but generally I'm really surprised(?) at how what I drew in 2021 is literally something I would never draw now-- like, not in the way that I'm OmoriPhobic, but in the use of colors, framing, lineart thickness, etc.

'nyways, this is probably the last consistent post I'll make in a while. The IRS is dragging me back to prison because I committed tax fraud :) 🤙

HELLO i’ve been a huge fan of ur artworks ever since 2021/ur pjsk works which i still really adore, i really love how shapey u draw & i was wondering if u have any tips or if u have any inspirations for being able to draw such fluidity within ur works ? if that makes sense !!! idk but mainly just wanted to say i really love all of ur art so much 💝💝💝

to preface this may not be very specific but i hope you can still derive some level of perspective of how i go about things i guess maybe it partly comes down to trying to be loose with it...? if i'm sketching with the intention of making it a full drawing then those sketches are usually rough and very messy. you can always make changes later, trust the process and whatnot, but once u have that energy that's something u can keep working off of.. like for a few things i drew back then i just immediately went into the colors without a sketch and that's still something that i do sometimes. and also i abuse the selection/transform tool like crazy HAHAH. i just move & redraw & stretch things until they look interesting. if you can be loose and have fun with it that's the key 2 unlocking your brain, which is what i am still forever trying to do. oh and curved lines r life...

in terms of inspirations for fluidity in particular there's a number of them but i think yuji uekawa's sonic art (particularly from the 90s-00s) and similar such works are the probably the most significant to mention. endless love in my <3 for this sort of stuff:

i draw sonic so much more than i post whoops but he just has a natural dynamism inherent to his design so i'd say most of the energy you might be getting from my stuff is what i picked up from drawing him a hundred times and then that maybe rubbing off on whatever else i draw or me trying to channel him LOL.

& of course thank you soooo much for your kind words ^_^. it means a lot! i don't know if any of this is helpful at all so if you wanna ask further feel free... but thank you again for enjoying my stuff for so long, it's truly truly very appreciated

Special Informal Devlog

Hi-ho, Wudge here! Aaaa. I missed the update last week... as we crawl closer and closer to release, it's become harder for me to write devlogs. I'm making progress every single day, and that makes me so frustrated that it isn't done yet, you know? 😭 Something something curse of perfectionism...

Anyway.

I thought I'd try something a little different with this post by chronicling a specific screen I've worked very hard on, from start to finish!

It all began on... August 2021?! Yowza, two years ago! When I posted a poll on tumblr and on itch about how I should handle flirt indicators. The votes were split 50/50 between two popular options, and I was able to surmise that yall would really, really love an option to toggle between the two.

It didn't take me long to figure out how to implement the toggle itself.

The following year (September 2022), I came up with the idea of putting in an illustrated tutorial on how my flirt indication system works - after all, poll participants had told me that they loved the idea and had never seen it before in other games. I was on a treadmill at the time, so I quickly doodled the idea on my phone. It looks like this:

Then when I got home, I did a rough pen draft to solidify the idea...

I worked on the digital version over the next 2-3 weeks, and asked my friends for help with editing the text to ensure clarity.

.... Then I took a looong break from the infographic to, uh.... write, edit, playtest the game, draw expressions for Griffin CG, draw expressions for the landlord, work on a new Clammy Lady sprite, playtest the game again, make all the characters blink, make the first glowing animation for Jade's powers, code in Griffin's CG expressions, stress about paypal making changes in my country, do concept art for upcoming npcs, write some more, playtest some more, draw a birthday picture for Dart, write devlogs every single week, make sure all my files were safely transferred to my new laptop before my old one completely died... etc.

So it was February 2023 by the time I came back around to try implementing the infographic in code :')

... It was functional, but no matter what I tried, I didn't like how it looked with everything crammed into one page.

... Then I got really sick... but after I recovered and did some more work (drawing, writing, playtesting, etc) I came back to the infographic with the intention to learn how to code pages in renpy.

Still didn't look phenomenal, but there's a whole lot more breathing room! This was in April 2023.

I took another "break" (worked on a million other things) and then... FINALLY... in late August 2023, just a few weeks ago, I had an art breakthrough!

I had garnered a better understanding of color and poses, and as a result my chibis became a LOT cuter! I was able to redraw most of them without too much hassle - whereas when I first started, it would take me all day to draw a single one.

I also drew custom heart icons (a plain heart, a golden heart, and a broken heart), figured out how to make text buttons look more fun and intuitive..

And here's where we're at now!!! I still need to draw eyes for Dart.... but I researched and absorbed a lot about screen compositions, and had a rather late realization that I could re-use backgrounds and assets I already have in the game.

About that Nova and Pluto height difference picture (this is gonna be a long post y'all)

I deleted the picture I drew of Nova and Pluto kissing on every one of my social medias save for Tumblr because people have been expressing their discomfort with how Nova looked like a child compared to Pluto who looked like a fully grown adult.

And I completely understand all the upset reactions since Pluto makes everyone look way more tiny than they truly are. It definitely didn't help that I was being lazy when I sketched and lined everything since I dread full bodies sometimes and tried to cheat by hiding most of Nova's with her big gamer jacket.

So that, mixed with Nova's height in comparison to Pluto, and me not focusing more on her anatomy led to a picture that, if you are already familiar with the characters, looks cute and fluffy. But if you are new to them, looks a lot less cute and more gross.

After talking to a friend as well as a mutual about the picture, I decided that deleting it and fleshing Nova's design out more would be the best.

Unlike Jack, Nana, Sweetheart, and Bitterbat, I've been slacking on drawing Nova and Pluto. And the latter couples have had whole make-overs and an established way I draw them that makes my brain go "YEP THIS WORKS". But Nova and Pluto have been neglected in my head so I haven't been updating their looks alongside my art style like I have been with the others. Which means I still draw them based off the designs I made of them back in like-2020 or 2021???

BASICALLY THEY'VE BEEN LONG OVER DUE FOR SOME TINKERING.

Specifically Nova. Pluto I am very happy with. But Nova's design needs more lovin' in it.

I won't be completely overhauling her since I love her current look-I just want to do a better job at her design.

When I first designed Nova and Pluto, they were meant to be based off retro anime designs for a cute girl and handsome boy (even though Pluto is nonbinary). Sadly, cute anime girls often look very less mature than their male counterparts and so Nova suffers the same problem by default. I also wanted Nova to stand out from my other adult female characters and have her lack the same amount of curves and basically be flat.

This is something I will still be keeping because the idea that "curves=adult" is genuinely a shitty concept. Same as "short=child" since there are PLENTY of shorties out there that are grown adults. I am one of them-it's why I keep making my girls so short. I need some representation down here 😭.

When it comes to Nova's current default outfit-I will technically still be keeping her gamer jacket in her wardrobe closet but I'll be giving her a new jacket that will serve to be her new default one that shows her build more so she won't look so "childish" compared to Pluto. It'll help to avoid a repeat situation (I hope) as well as solve my constant frustration at having to cover up good ass anatomy with clothing (I DO IT ENOUGH TO JACK-I PLAYED MYSELF WITH NOVA'S JACKET)

OVERALL-Nova just needs the same love I gave to Nana and Sweetheart when they went through their original tinkers.

I will continue to draw Nova and Pluto together because I care about them and their story a lot. But with the themes that occur in the story and the relationship Nova and Pluto have together, it's definitely important that I make sure that cat girl looks more like a cat woman in future art I draw of her.

As for why I didn't delete the Tumblr post of the original picture-this entire site is an internet archive which means if someone reblogs something from someone, and then that someone deletes the original post, the reblog doesn't go down with it and remains. So it'd be useless to delete it. I just settled for turning reblogs off.

In the future I definitely want to redraw the picture but I'll hold off until I give Nova the touch ups she very much deserves.

It is funny.

At one point I decided that toy sitting specifically was evil and I needed to wean myself off it. I tried to draw a girl with a reasonable sized ass and figured having her be like, a dungeon delver eating treasure would be more appropriate. I made this character to be less hot to me. I could not. I kept editing her to make her ass bigger and never drew the dungeon-treasure. When she raised the shovel to deposit her finds into her mouth I could not resist. I drew them as toys.

I don't remember when this was but the paper is quite yellow now. It could have been before college or in the first year. In college I erased her hair to redraw it less like my crush's hair looked the day her image was seared into my memory, but it came out awful so i put it back. I liked her a lot. She became the icon of like, reckless consumption.

At the end of college I played darkest dungeon quite a lot. I named my A-list hellion Erica because she seemed like an Erica. I got attached to her which is what you're not supposed to do in that game. I edited the files so the red-clothed hellion had a bigger ass (quite badly for several of the animations.)

I played CDDA. I enjoyed, for a time, making a girl who loots the abandoned houses and builds a giant vehicle out of all the stuff, but was frustrated by the military/toughguy prepper focus of the game. I wanted to make characters that "eat" gadgets/appliances/toys with the furnace bionic but it felt off - there wasn't enough use for mass bionic power, you got too little from Cool items and lots more from busted up furniture, and it was a bad idea in gameplay terms to destroy the most valuable finds. And you couldn't sit on things.

I tried making Hellion-Erica as a character in the game but I found it pretty unpleasant to roleplay as someone that tough. I wanted someone soft with a big ass who crushes and eats hotly, unapologetically and rudely but not jockly. Someone like the icon of reckless consumption girl. I decided her name was also Erica.

When I discussed on my main teaching myself C++ and editing CDDA this is what I was doing. The options for json-data-modding this stuff were clunky. I wanted there to be a lot more toys in the game, and I wanted it to be possible to crush and eat them. I implemented these and a bunch of stupid marginal features. You could progress through a silly system of growing your ass and your girl powers with mutations that would all increase your need to eat and eat and eat everything. And these were all internally called ERICA_WHATEVER (the existing mutations in CDDA all have allcaps internal names.)

But I got annoyed at this project, left it behind, CDDA itself moved on and released worse and worse updates, C++ moved on and the libraries the old version I had forked depended on were deprecated or changed and it would no longer compile unless I went in and messed around with some of the lowest-level and likely performance-finicky parts of the game as an amateur.

This was in 2020-2021 that I was working on it heavily. The amount of time I was spending coding is insane to me now with the Brain Problems. It was not good code by any means but I was doing it. I had absurd ambitions and I was plugging away at them to make a world Erica could devour.

In February 2022, during a boring boomer conversation I felt like drawing something. I thought I would draw the sort of player-character I always made in CDDA (the unmodified version that I hadn't played in a while.) But I wasn't really sure how to draw, like, a rifle on a shoulder strap, so I ended up with just a girl in a jacket (storage volume is king) and cat ears (I always made my characters Stylish) and I tell you what. I was smitten with her. I was so smitten with her that I didn't give her bionics and stuff because I have boring taste in girls.

Her name was also Erica, of course. She watched from a clipboard as I shaved for the first time, because my parents never taught me and 2022 was when I decided I was going to metaphysically be a girl whether or not I had the right soul bit set. Here she is. I love her.

She eats toys too, of course. She eats and crushes and meows and is so so beautiful.

Later that year I decided I needed a name for myself. There was an obvious choice.

Bambi - Prototype Arthur(Also showing other past versions of Arthur)

I'm attempting to work on what's left of my Sonadowtober stuff but I'm semi distracted & constantly tired. This was meant to be part of a Sonadowtober sketch dump but decided to separate it. I'm gonna draw him again later in the actual sketch dump.

This is kind of a redraw/updated version of a past sketch I made back in 2021 of a design I kind of consider a prototype version of my OC Arthur that I named Bambi as a placeholder. Bambi was inspired by Sonic(and is meant to be the reincarnation of a character based on Sonic), Makoto Naegi(hair & hair color is based on his hair), Astolfo's hair, scenekid fashion & for some reason PowerEdd from Eddsworld as well as Corrupted Edd from the Eddsworld fandom but doesn't come up much.(Admittedly showed up in a past version of both Bambi & Arthur, Kurumi who is another past version of Arthur has it come up in some pics)

Summary:

Bambi is friendly & cheerful, he grew up with his dad & stepmom that care a lot about him. His dad was the friend of Bambi's mom & agreed to be her donor when she wanted a kid & had trouble with partners, she sadly passed after having Bambi, his dad took him in & though he & his wife miss their friend they're glad that Bambi is alive. Bambi has a good relationship with his parents though on occasion wonders what it'd be like if his bio mom was alive, his parents make sure he knows who she was/what she was like so he feels like he knows her in some ways.

Bambi has complications with energy possibly a chronic issue, if he's not careful he ends up weak & having mobility issues which leads to carrying a cane. A friend of his made him a device that looks like a flower meant to help with some of the issues & serve as a portable batter of sorts thanks to some kind of crystals attached to it. Bambi has powers & often saves some of the extra energy the flower has for in case he needs to use his powers in a pinch. He enjoys using his speeding powers & occasionally floating around when he has the energy to do so.

Here's some pics I put together of Arthur & Kurumi as examples. I don't exactly have many color examples so I did the best I could. You can see that at one point Kurumi had the hair antenna/long ahoges that Bambi has.

I also added in Peridot who is another character I made in the past & ended up scrapping. He ended up being turned into Kurumi at soem point. I think he was meant to be a mascot character for me but I moved on at some point. His name I think was inspired by Peridot from Steven Universe & I gave hung a peridot from his collar with his star charm also being peridot colored.

It's kind of funny how things went

Arthur is a star child also the reincarnation of a Sonic based OC of mine & an ex up-&-coming vigilante super hero that had to retire due to something that happened to him that led to turning into a gem person

Bambi is the reincarnation of a Sonic based OC I hadn't worked on

Kurumi is a star child that's housemates with his friends who are also star children, is an ex-superhero

Peridot is an alien that was adopted by the head of a hospital, studied hard to become a nurse & works in the children ward helping/comforting children

Here's another version of Peridot, this is a redesign I made of him before eventually retiring the character & some how turned into Kurumi. Admittedly his skin ton changed, I had trouble working on stuff.

His hair color & eye color is the same as Kurumi's & both wear star based charms. For a while Kurumi also wore the same collar as Peridot. I want to stress Peridot & Kurumi's eye color, ver2 Peridot, Kurumi & Bambi's hair color are heavily based on Makoto Naegi from Danganronpa.

Fun fact this drawing was the first pic I drew using my wacom tablet, was a little annoyed with it back then but it's the thing I use the most for digital drawing now. I think this came out pretty well though it was also at a time when I used canvas sizes that were too small so the image is smaller than I'm use to now.

introducing Yzyck Fournier and his friends, starting with this drawing i just finished today!

Cat Something is a very nervous and generally silent person. He was 'created' by Dr. Gones when she removed his brain from his original body and put it into the body he now inhabits. He does not like being near her. His memories of life before the procedure are scant; "Cat-something" was his response when asked for his name. Dr. Nibha Gones (pronounced 'Jones') is a mad scientist who likes to find the strangest and often most unethical ways to create new life. She likes to think she is the most reasonable person in her circle, but such a thing does not really exist. She is more reserved and disconnected from everyone. Yzyck Fournier (first name pronounced 'Isaac') is a Frankenstein-cum-Geppetto type who performs gender-affirming surgeries. He views Dr. Gones as his enemy, but they have also been friends for a very long time. Yzyck's friends (not including Dr. Gones) live with him in a big laboratory. He refers to many of his friends as his 'creations'.

Yaag Kralaaga is the most recent of Yzyck's creations. It's not quite dead and not quite alive. He is very clingy to Yzyck and sometimes only speaks one word at a time. It likes to meet new people, but new people do not like to meet it. Yaag can tend to have an aggressive demeanour. Accordion Doll is an animated accordion doll that Yzyck made. It does not have a name and mostly slinks around the lab aimlessly, not capable of much else. Magret is one of Yzyck's very old friends. He speaks through the gramophone horn and likes to wear a large variety of dresses. He was the subject of Yzyck's first experiment, which failed and resulted in Magret losing his head. His body was preserved for a long time until Yzyck felt he was skilled enough to bring his friend back.

there's not really a set storyline with this group, it's mostly just a way to have fun and draw whatever ridiculous ideas i get. the rest of the art in this post is from newest to oldest.

LOL 4 weeks into FT 100 Years Quest Anime and I ain't updated SQUAT

I mean I do have something FT100yq related but it's current manga so it'd be spoilers 😅

Anyway! I'm REALLY enjoying the anime! Me and my bestie can finally watch FT together after bonding over the series back in 2021 😭 We having much fun :3

Art looks REALLY GOOD. I'm impressed even! They seem to have achieved the perfect balance between Satelight (2009), FT final season, and Utsuo Ueda's styles in what they have!

So, with this portion of FT, I'm tempted to draw Gene in the scenes I think she'd fit into. Cuz she joins FT around Fall of X792. So she'd technically be a character in this anime! If she were *sniffle* cannon...

But the thing is, I already drew it 🤣 back in 2021 when the anime was first announced lol

And this is the screenshot of that scene from episode 2!

I could place her right next to Mira again on that bench in the first ss but for this second one I would have to either completely redraw it and move Touka or just have her off to the side like Elfman is.

Anyway! I watched the first ep in dub as well! It was pretty good! All the new voices were actually great. Most impressed with Elefseria's performance to be quite honest.

Levy was recast but new va holds up and does a great job herself. Lily was also recast but If I'm not mistaken, they just had Arcadios' va take over the role. Which I'm not complaining since it works.

Cherami carrying the dub like fricken always. Love her. Brina went back to Juvia so EASILY I love her! Colleen killing it like always. And Todd is great like always, though I'm waiting to hear his more action and dramatic scenes cuz that is definitely where he shines!

The rest of the voice acting cast are clearly much older and their voices show it. Still great performances from everyone but I wouldn't blame anyone if they retired after 15 years like Levy's va did.

Anywhhhooooooooooo I'm very happy to have my anime back!

Idk if it was because he was difficult to draw (even though I remember having a much more difficult time with soobin) or i didn't have many ideas to draw him or something, idk.
