Her paintings channel the moment of entering a space, the moment of slowing down and settling into stillness and silence, where awareness of light, volume, and spatial relationships grow. Allowing the gaze to settle into Young’s tonal works, the dense clusters of marks begin to reveal spaces between the layers. Shapes advance and recede, drawing the viewer further into the painting’s depths. Ingrid Daniell • You can’t cut down the sun • Continues this week! Visit our Redfern gallery to view Ingrid’s exquisite show of land, sea and skyscapes. This powerful series explores Ingrid’s relationship to the land and coastal environments of Australia and is underpinned by a passionate call for action when it comes to protecting the environment from further harm due to climate change. Ingrid writes: “I find context in my painting by using the landscape as a metaphor for our fragile earth, the devastation of climate change in the Anthropocene and our continued human need to belong…. ASSIGNING SELF (2021) by ISABELLE DE KLEINE • Watercolour, gouache + acrylic on paper • Framed size: 156cm H x 126cm W • Framed in stained oak with Perspex Says Isabelle de Kleine of her work: “Society assigns identity based on external factors, such as gender, race, religion, beauty, etc. The artworks title ‘Assigning Self’ is about the differentiating the identity society places on us to our self assigned identity. This self constructed identity is beautiful and flawed. Complex and layered. In this work I wanted to focus on building textural elements and pattern to create depth and contrast. I combined earthy tones with strong pastel hues, and pattern with flat areas of colour to portray this complexity.
