Roomba vs. Demon

The demon – a huge creature with bright red skin and curled horns on his head – is standing on the burned remnants of my new rug, awaiting my answer. Well, not my answer.

“I don’t know what to tell you, man. It’s a machine. It can’t talk, let alone request something,” I say, hugging my poor little Roomba, called Broomie, to my chest like he’s a scared little animal. How was I supposed to know the pattern of dust on the Ouija board rug would spell out the name of the demon Agother, the Great Lord of the Fifth Circle of Hell? I pat Broomie on his back, mentally chastising him not only for summoning a demon, but summoning one of the most powerful ones. “Can’t you just go back to hell, or something?”

“It summoned me. I must obey its command,” Agother answers, with a voice that sounds like a cheese grater trying to grate through metal.

“But he doesn’t even have a soul! There’s nothing to bargain for!” I argue, somewhat afraid that he will take Broomie away from me instead of a soul. He was not a cheap vacuum.

“It has a name. It has something to be taken.”

I sigh. This is going to be a long day, if I have to debate with a demon the entire time. The worst case scenario is that he must stay here in my apartment forever, waiting for a request from Broomie that will never come. The best case scenario is that he gives me some cool demon powers, but that isn’t very likely.

“Can’t I make a request? Broomie is my property, so even if he summoned you, you could say that it was in my name.”

“NO.” The word echoes through the room, like he wants the whole building to hear his refusal. “Only the summoner can make a request.”

“But he’s a machine, he can’t make a request because he can’t talk. He’s not a person just because he has a name! You can’t just solve the ‘Are Robots People’-debate like that!” Already frustrated, I can’t imagine having to deal with this demon for the rest of my life, or at least for the rest of Broomie’s life.

“It summoned me. I must obey its request,” Agother repeats.

“Ugh, really?” I roll my eyes. “Well, what are we going to do now? What if it doesn’t make a request?”

“I will wait until a request is made, even if it takes an eternity,” Agother says, which is the last answer I wanted to hear, and I mentally prepare myself for having to spend an eternity with a demon.

“Fine, whatever.” I put Broomie back on the rug, where he immediately starts to vacuum up the fresh ash. “You can wait as long as you want. Hope you like spending your time with a vacuum!”

Before Agother can answer, Broomie stops moving and beeps three times. “What is it saying?” Agother asks, looking intrigued at the little vacuum.

I pull out my phone to check the app. “It says: ‘Battery low, please charge me’,” I read of the notification, while showing the message to Agother.

“Ah! A request!” Agother exclaims. He points at Broomie and an electrical shock charge the air. The vacuum beeps again and start rolling around, vacuuming up the mess the demon, now back in hell, has left.

“Well, that was weird. Don’t do that again,” I say to the robot, which name I can’t remember now.
