Whumptober 2024 No. 22- Bleeding Through Bandages | Reopening Wounds | "Oh, That's Not Good"

Hero put a hand up against the brick of the alleyway wall for balance, their other hand clutching their bleeding side. Their wound must have re-opened during the fight. They lifted their suit up, and sure enough, red seeped through hastily-applied bandages.

It would take them a while to get home and re-dress their injury. Hero was just about to turn and head that way when they felt a sharp prick in their neck. Instinctively, they reached up and felt around, pulling out a purple-banded dart.

“Oh, that's not good,” Hero mumbled.

They dropped straight to the ground with a thud, and then it was lights out.

…

Hero stirred to the distant sound of humming. They groaned and let their eyes flutter open. A dimly lit basement came into view. They felt a light pressure on their side. Hero looked down and saw-

“Vil’n?” Hero slurred.

“Mhm,” the criminal replied, then going back to their humming.

“What're you doing?”

“Putting my punching bag back together,” Villain answered, “because it obviously doesn’t know how wound tending works.”

As Villain spoke, they weaved surgical thread in and out of Hero's skin, pulling their injury shut. It had been cleaned, and they must have given Hero some sort of painkillers beforehand, because Hero could barely feel the needle sliding in and out, in and out.

“There,” Villain said, finishing.

Hero went to touch the spot, but their hand was stuck fast behind them. They went to move their other hand, but that one wouldn't budge either. In fact, now that they got a look at themselves, Hero realized they had been heavily tied to a chair.

“Didn’t want you squirming,” Villain explained, noting Hero's alarmed expression, “and I wouldn't be much of a villain if I didn’t take advantage of the situation a little bit.”

“So you’re not going to let me go after this?”

“Ha! Let you go? Hardly. You have no clue how to take care of yourself, I'm amazed you've lived this long. No, you'll be staying here until this heals. Properly.”

“You can’t just keep me in your basement for… how long do gashes take to heal?”

Villain gave them an incredulous look that screamed, “you're proving my point for me".

“For your information, I won't be keeping you in my basement for the duration of your stay. I've made arrangements for you in the guest bedroom. Try anything though, and these ropes will look like child's play compared to what I restrain you with.”

Hero gulped. They knew Villain meant it.

“But what about my job?” they asked timidly.

“Oh come now, Hero! The city isn’t going to fall to wrack and ruin just because you're not running around in costume for a little while!”

Villain produced a knife and began to cut Hero free. Once that was done, they escorted Hero upstairs to their guest bedroom. It would be a while before their wound healed completely, and Villain was prepared to do anything to keep Hero resting until then.

I was constantly asking which design was the weakest, why, and how to fix it. Whenever I tested without the magical comet behind it, people could only guess who comet was by process of elimination.

I didn't want to rely on throwing icons into the design. I wanted each one to communicate through shape and silhouette alone. It would be like drawing a little cherub with a bow and arrow floating along with cupid. If you have to include a nametag to communicate, your design can be improved.

So I tried a few different strategies to say "comet" before I realized I could twist the antlers into any shape I wanted. I was worried I would have to discard the drawing and restart from scratch! Which is what I did for rudolph about 6 times before I had a breakthrough.

Then I gave my patrons a brief lesson in antlers to explain where and why I was placing the tines. When I stray from the caribou structure, I do so knowingly in order to achieve something that cannot be achieved within the caribou shape, like dancer's tutu. Know the rules before you break them. My goal is to make animal nerds (myself chief among them) happy when they see species-specific anatomy instead of cop outs.

I tried a few things before figuring out antlers could become comet

Another thing that often caribou have is an unsymmetrical "spork" that comes forward off only one antler. I figured this out by looking at hundreds of reindeer pictures and saving them to my reference folder. A few of my designs have this, that's what the little spiral is in the final comet antler design.

When I put comet in my lineup, I realized that the antlers I drew were way more stylized, chunky, and "tribal" than the others. I had already changed the proportions on one of my designs to match, so then I had to hack away at the basic comet rack to make it look natural.

I already knew that comet's colors would be easy because a basic reindeer already Has the big comet on the shoulder. But here's a peak at all the reindeer images I posted for my patrons to look at.

As you can see below, I chose reindeer markings for all my designs instead of other deer or animals. Even vixen is tied to actually possible reindeer patterns rather than copy-pasting a fox. Almost all of my designs have light-colored anklets on dark colored legs, which is very common with caribou of any color. This is the sort of thing no one tells you; you have to observe it yourself.

Ft cupid's early design! I was continually testing out my reindeer silhouettes and colors on new people, taking their feedback, and fixing what wasn't clicking.

I know I could have made vixen sexy and curvy to play into a recognizable trope, but I really wanted them to be scary and fox-like. Sometimes you gotta do what you want and not what you think will appeal to audiences. Reindeer Days is a purposeful exercise in audience resonance. Most of my art is 100% me and what I feel like doing with no regards to anyone else. So it was a fun challenge!

My patrons also got to see me making fun of corporate designs for recognizably/cliches at the expense of literally anything good

One of these is going to get a lot more "that must be vixen!" results from people who aren't constantly thinking about animal colors, markings, hunting strategies, and teeth.

And one rocks.

Vixen changed the least from the initial 2021 concept!

A Vixen is a female fox. In english slang, it means a cunning, fierce human woman, and sometimes sexually attractive or promiscuous. Quite often an insult to someone because she won't date you!

But to me, a vixen is an animal. A predator.

When designing to reference something, I like to hit it at multiple angles, referencing obscure trivia about something to delight and educate. This is done by researching a topic deeply, far below surface level and beyond what you think you need to make your design. Or in my case its just knowing a bunch of animal trivia already.

After researching/dredging your knowledge, sit there and Think. Don't draw anything. Come up with several ideas and then throw them all in at once for the ultimate trivia design.

Trivia about red foxes:

They have Long bushy tails

They have teeth that include large sharp canines, flat incisors, triangular premolars, and chunky molars with points on them that slide scissor-like with the molars above to cut meat via chewing

They hunt rodents in burrows under the snow by jumping into the air, arcing, and slamming down with their face through the snow

They are orange

They have a dark vertical stripe on their snout

They have black legs, with the backs and bottoms being orange

Translated into the design:

Pose based on a fox jumping, about to land in the snow

Antlers twisted to resemble teeth

Long (for a reindeer) bushy tail

black mark on snout

Some adjustment to the pose to be at the top of the arc and flow better.

Tinkering with the design to make it recognizable but not 100% copypasta fox

I was finally happy with a design that absolutely showed "fox" while still being creative and plausibly caribou shaped. This would absolutely communicate who it is! I thought!

The most obvious one of the bunch! After all, everyone knows what a vixen is!

op i saw your punisher jacket. if you made that design into stickers that would be epic (just a thought, but also i completely respect wanting to keep it as a design just for yourself)

It’s funny, I actually used stickers to make the main patch!

The idea of painting all of that text by hand was terrifying. I went to Joann’s and bought alphabet stickers, arranged them with tweezers, painted the entire thing over in black, then peeled the letters off.

Mind you aside from watching one (1) youtube video about how to paint your own patches, I completely winged this lettering technique, and who knows how well it will hold up over time. There are a few layers of paint on there because I wanted the coloring to look faded and grungy, and I worry about it cracking.

All of this is to say that I have never sold a design before, but I’m very glad you like it, and if I could have bought something like it instead of going through all this damn effort, I probably would have. I wish there were more fandom sellers for The Punisher that weren’t clearly Republicans. It did cross my mind to reproduce it as a patch, but holy FUCK did it take a long time, and would not be worth it unless I actually went through the trouble of creating a screenprinting station, and that's not going to happen.

If you happen to want to make your own, you will need:

anger about the fact that you feel the need to explain your complicated feelings about your fandom all the time

scrap fabric (I used an old t-shirt)

paint (I used Liquitex Basics Acrylic because that's what the goth teenager with one bleached eyebrow on youtube preferred)

small foam stippling brushes, a larger brush for the initial black layer, and a smaller stiff angled brush for detail cleanup

letter stickers (I used Sticko Futura Regular glitter stickers and the Sticko Foil Helvetica. They worked well enough but sometimes the paint bled around the edges and I had to clean it up after. I wanted flat stickers rather than raised because I thought they would be easier to paint around with the stippler)

The roses I did with an 8" stencil pack from Amazon and a roll of masking tape. This was significantly less effort.

The metal punch got two coins in before it broke. I decided the ones that I had were too shiny, so I smudged 'em with a bit of black paint.

Go forward anon, make a battle jacket! I just need a con to wear this one to. In the meantime, I'll try not to get beat up about it on the street. I'm waiting on a couple of buttons to arrive in the mail from Redbubble, Bernthal loving on Bam Bam and another that says "BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS NOW," because that felt relevant.

Philautia is the greek idea of self love, and is our next Love Sibling!

Often called Tia, their wings are inspired by a moth, or a butterfly. Their wings also are transparent and very thin. They sometimes struggle to take flight, and prefer to glide.

Tia has a similar form to that of the statues of Circe in Greece. The Manifestations who have spoken to them often say the connection is uncanny. Some even believe that Circe is a myth based on Lia venturing to the Mortal Realm.

Lia loves herself, and loves others just the same. They act as a sort of teacher for their siblings, mostly in the ways of their powers. Angel is often busy with their own duties, so they act as a trainer for their abilities.

They are often found about in the gardens, walking calmly on their own. While they do love their siblings, Lia prefers the company of herself. Which explains why she skips almost all of the Manifestation meetings.

Philiautia was so hard to design! But after some thought, I decided to base her wings off a moth or a butterfly. Those stories about growing into yourself and metamorphosis have a special place in my heart! (Looking at you Zuko arc)

Fun Ideas about Lia!

They did in fact turn men to pigs, but only after they attempted to assault the sorceresses they was staying with.

They jumps off trees and rooftops rather than taking off from the ground.

They hate the cold. Storge made them special coverings for their wings in the cold months to protect them!

yeah. i have two accounts; the first is 10 years old, has new designs added fairly regularly, and for the past 4 or so years has on average earned around $50 a month. that was rated premium. all right. i braced myself for my other account to be standard.

my other account is 2 years old, not many designs, just over 50 sales. and it...is also premium. according to the dashboard, in the past year it's had 414 unique visitors. the traffic sources though are about 1/3rd redbubble and 2/3rds everything else, so it may be that the ratio of traffic you bring in yourself is a significant factor. sure would be nice if they'd just tell us!

i do think the new system sounds dumb as hell, severely hurts the creators now subject to fees, was poorly explained, and we weren't given much prior warning. i have generally liked redbubble, better than other POD platforms, all these years. but there's just nothing good at all about this change. and....there's still no other platform that's any better, s6 is getting even worse. there's just not -- to the best of my knowledge -- anywhere with comparable services and fewer bullshit fees or policies. i will definitely be giving them my very critical feedback, but that $50 a month is not something i can afford to lose by deleting my account in protest, unfortunately.

Redbubble will now be taking 30-50% of the artist margin on top of that sweet sweet 80% of the sale price already

tips for college... but make it Quarantine: (sidenote these have only been tried by my able-bodied neurotypical self so. this isn’t psychiatric advice)

bored? go on a walk. go physically outside. open a window and take several laps around the house if that can’t happen. do some sit-ups. do some yoga. stretch!! your neck and back and joints!! wash your face. brush your teeth again. lie on your stomach and doodle on paper like you’re 5

can’t focus during a lecture? stand up at your desk. sit on the floor in a patch of sunlight. Change The Surroundings. text your friends (or lmao make a tumblr post) saying i am going to pay attention to this lecture and tell you what i learned afterwards. make it a challenge.

running out of food? can’t find the energy to Make a Meal? peanut butter and honey in a bowl. that’s it. or just a spoonful of peanut butter. also stay hydrated blease

freaking out about grades? life? the future? send an email. email your TA. email your prof. email your advisor. email the counseling center. email your parents. email your pen pal from 2011. i will literally help you draft this email i kid you not.

parents/siblings/roommates making it hard to focus but you hate conflict? slam the door before lecture. write a note and put it on your door. complain about having to listen to a professor via Zoom for hours on end. use headphones. steal headphones. try and explain that the education system has refused to slow down and you need to be able to focus. email the prof and ask for lecture recordings because your home life is super loud/not accommodating.

lonely? schedule discord dates!! zoom dates!! facetime dates!! do a screenshare and host a virtual movie night. heck just call someone for the h e c k of it (and to end it you can just say “well i’ll let you go/i just wanted to check in” so you’re not stuck). social interaction is a Weird Thing rn but it’s boosted my mood to interact with friends so far in any capacity

feel like you’re falling behind? these are unprecedented circumstances. your brain is running on low-power-mode with half the thrusters devoted to a mild fight or flight response. we don’t know how to react to this, and that’s okay! i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again. take this one day at a time. NOBODY is out here absolutely flourishing all of a sudden.

disappointed about not physically graduating or getting a ceremony? ...yeah. me too. and it’s okay to feel like crap about it. don’t put yourself down because others might have it worse. be proud of yourself!! this is a huge accomplishment.

when’s the last time you ate a vegetable? yeah, that’s what i thought. go eat a vegetable- and a GOOD one, too, not something that’s 90% water.

okay now for wild-type collegiate:

...it’s. it’s gonna be overwhelming. it’s a lot! you will learn as much about yourself as you do about whatever you decide to study. but here are some tips that i may or may not have already said a thousand times:

drink. water. get a water bottle. get 800 redbubble stickers and slap them on the bottle. now take it everywhere.

make friends with your advisors early on. they’re the ones to write to when you need to get forced into a class your senior year. if you come in for easy questions, are nice, etc. they’ll be much more amiable and willing to help you out.

try to introduce yourself to the prof and/or TA on the first day/week. if nothing else, you’ll be more comfortable if you ever have to panic email them later on

turning in late work is ALWAYS better than no work at all.

i have to sit within the first three rows or i’m a lost cause, so find where you’re the least distracted (likely the first 1-3 rows) and sit there forever

learn how to cut through buildings to shave like 5 minutes and countless weather mishaps off your commute time

know!! your sleep and productivity schedules. try to stick to them. i am physically incapable of being alive for an 8 am, and i’m most productive around sunset, so i love to stick classes between 9:30 and 3:00 with a break in between and calmly let myself eat and de-stress from mid-afternoon until early evening. there are people who can schedule all their classes from 8-10 and be productive all day and i am not one of them. college is the first time you get to plan your schedule, and perhaps will be the only time you can schedule your day to begin at 12:30 in the afternoon, so use that to your advantage

USE AND STICK WITH SOME FORM OF ORGANIZATIONAL SYSTEM. any kind of calendar i swear. it’ll save your life

download and save your syllabi!!!! this is a tip that i really hadn’t heard until i was already in grad school, but this can definitely help when you’re looking at course equivalencies or to talk about work/educational experience. if you haven’t no sweat, just start now

try to make at least mild acquaintances/contacts in each class, especially those major-related- this is just for missed classwork or “what the heck is question 3 even asking me?!” stuff. also make as many friends as you can comfortably handle. don’t overwork yourself socially because you think everyone has to be a social butterfly in college

college isn’t for everyone. your major might not be right for you. your college situation (out-of-state, living on campus, taking 21 hours a semester) might not be right for you. don’t give yourself crap if it is! figure out what you can study and/or work with without burning yourself out, and run full-speed ahead at it. it’s rough to find the balance between “idk i just think this is neat” and “i will spend the next 4+ years studying This and then the rest of my foreseeable future Doing This” but if you miscalculated the first time, just try again.

you will, at some point in college, be rejected from something. or be scared of getting rejected. or get a really, really harsh criticism from someone you admire. do it. don’t back down. rejections are important!! they are learning experiences academically and emotionally. they help you improve and they help you learn how to be rejected. if you graduate college and have Never been rejected from anything in your entire life, the world has set you up for a potential failure when you are completely caught off-guard the first time it happens and you’re well into your late 20s. this is coming from someone who teared up in a therapist’s office at the mere THOUGHT of being rejected from grad school. it’s literally more okay to cry on a college campus than anywhere else in the world

if you can, take a class Outside your major. i’m taking “Dystopian Writers” rn as a genetics major and it’s so neat to hear people discuss stuff i never would have thought about or experienced otherwise.

Hello, I love your new stickers! I have a question about something you said in that post. You mentioned that someone was selling unauthorized copies of your work. I understand if you can't speak to that experience specifically, but I was wondering - in general, what is the best way to deal with art thieves? Is your work trademarked/copyrighted, and how did you do that? I see so many people on tumblr talking about the problem of art theft, but basically zero practical advice.

This is a fantastic question, and it’s one we’re happy to answer!

Our work is indeed copyrighted, and we (Kitty and I) formed an LLC together to help with taxes and legal matters. While you sometimes can’t do anything about art theft, here are a few ways you can protect yourself:

1. Copyright your work. Copyright law is confusing and lengthy, but here’s it in a nutshell: if you can prove you made The Thing first, then you own The Thing. A super easy, cheap, old-school way to do this is to mail your work to yourself, then don’t open the envelope. If you ever need to contest your copyright legally, you whip out that sealed, dated envelope to prove your ownership. You can also copyright it via the U.S. government’s Copyright Office, a division of the Library of Congress. Here’s where you register a copyright online. It costs a small fee, and the website is a bit clunky.

2. Trademark your work. If it’s a logo or a motto or something like that, it’s worth trademarking. We have not yet trademarked our logo, but we will soon, especially since it’s being stolen. The difference between trademarks and copyrights is confusing, but you can read about it here. And you can register a trademark using the same governmental website.

3. File a DCMA Takedown request. The DCMA ( Digital Millennium Copyright Act) is basically a law that says “don’t steal stuff someone else made and pretend like it’s yours). This website explains all about how to use the DCMA to get stolen content taken off the Internet. But that website also charges you to do it on your behalf. Don’t do that if the theft is small-scale, as you can easily handle it yourself. Here’s how:

Go to the site where your work has been stolen. Find their contact information. If it’s a site like Spreadshirt or somewhere else that posts tons of designs for sale, they’ll have a specific link for handling DCMA takedown requests. Then, send them an email that reads:

My name is [NAME] and I am the creator of the [DESCRIPTION OF STOLEN WORK]. It has been reproduced in full at [LINK TO WHERE YOU FOUND STOLEN WORK] which infringes on my copyright. The original logo and shirt to which I own the rights can be found here:

[LINK WHERE YOUR ORIGINAL WORK CAN BE FOUND] The unauthorized and infringing copy can be found at: [LINK TO WHERE YOU FOUND STOLEN WORK] This letter is official notification under Section 512(c) of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (”DMCA”), and I seek the removal of the aforementioned infringing material from your website. I request that you immediately notify the infringer of this notice and notify them to cease any further posting of infringing material in the future. I am providing this notice in good faith and with the reasonable belief that rights I own are being infringed. Under penalty of perjury I certify that the information contained in the notification is both true and accurate, and I have the authority to act on behalf of the owner of the copyright(s) involved. Should you wish to discuss this with me please contact me. Thank you.

If they’re a reputable site and not total assholes, you should receive a letter like this in return:

We are contacting you in relation to issues you recently raised with us regarding content on the Redbubble website. We've reviewed the information contained in your complaint and, in accordance with our policy, we've:

removed the content you've referred to; and

written to the relevant end user about your complaint and the content we removed.

PLEASE NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE FILED A COPYRIGHT WITH THE U.S. GOVERNMENT IN ORDER TO FILE A DCMA TAKEDOWN REQUEST. Normally, the above letter works just fine! If they turn around and say “lol prove it,” then you’ll need to take steps to prove you own the copyright.

This is a really simplified way of handling these things, but in general most of these online thieves are bots not interested in fighting you on your intellectual property. In more serious cases, you might need to lawyer up. But start with this cheap method first.

Do a reverse Google image search from time to time to see if your artwork is popping up around the web, then take the above measures to get it taken down. And try the mail thing now if you suspect some art is likely to be stolen, as that’ll make it easy to prove copyright and ownership.

A chance encounter at the hospital leads Dean and Cas to each other after a decade of coincidences and premonitions, and suddenly their worst day might become the foundation for all of their best. A story of choice and destiny, and the power of found family, foretold through uncanny tattoos.

Even sweeteners are tightly regulated and highly taxed.

And now, January 17th, 2089, Castiel’s tablet feeds him another headline that promises longer, safer lives for all:

Ocean’s Brawl (M, 55k)

In a time of oppression, the Winchester brothers and their family of misfit pirates sail the seas attacking slave traders and offering the liberated passage to safe-havens, or–if they choose it–a home on the Impala as part of Team Free Will.

Dean meets Castiel, a Naval Captain with orders to enlist him and his band of honorable sea rovers as privateers. Dean refuses, but they end up working together when Castiel offers his vessel as transport for some rescued slaves. Castiel, in turn, travels with Dean as collateral to ensure there is no foul play.

Along the way, Castiel witnesses the horrors of slavery and begins to doubt his cause, even fighting alongside Dean against a French vessel–Castiel’s own people. Castiel comes to admire this wild crew and their kind hearts…perhaps falling for one man in particular.

Jehan Prouvaire: Moodboards, pastels, and he once dragged a troll so hard they deleted. Jehan is the absolute Queen of angsty ficlets, because he has a way with words and absolutely no shame in being melodramatic. He may also have written some rare pair smut, to great public acclaim. He is fanon!Montparnasse's number one supporter, and does not care what canon has to say about it.

Feuilly: Inktober is his kingdom, redbubble and koffee his warships, and caffeine is his trusty squire. Feuilly is a prolific artist, and nobody can explain how such quality and quantity can co-exist, especially because, apparently, he works and studies too. One would think he'd be at least short-tempered from exhaustion, but no: he is kind and reasonable and so so so generous with his time and talent. He stays in his lane, stays wholesome. What an absolute cookie of a person. We all know one or three wonderful people like this so let us take a moment to marvel at how lucky we are!

Courfeyrac: this ray of sunshine firmly believes that there is no way to do fandom wrong. His blog is a mix of musical, brick, fandom AUs and various film adaptations where everybody is emphatically welcome. He has become a fan famous name, mainly because he posts consistently and is always so nice, and has a bit of everything, so who wouldn't want to follow. He is beloved by the fandom, and in turn loves everybody so much.

Bahorel: He hates this hellsite. Heracle, he hates this blue dumpster so much. When will he be free? He will delete himself. He will end the madness and free us all. He will fight @staff with his BARE HANDS... just as soon as he publishes these 10k words of Valjean and Cosette fluff

Combeferre: He wants everybody to share into the brilliant mess of intertextuality that is the brick. He writes post upon posts of hugosian exegesis and he will answer endless asks on historical context with detail and accuracy (and linked sources, because that is what the age of information is for). His favourite character is Sister Simplice, but his longest post is a brilliant exploration of the figure of Javert in the brick (and in context) and how he interacts with the central themes of the novel (and is, of course, not a villain).

Bossuet: Bossuet does not have many followers, probably because he posts erratically, and also once he list his url so now he has had to start from scratch. He does not care, however. He's just here for the party and the puns - and for the Joly's of the world, of course.

Grantaire: everybody's favourite garbage-man posts 70 posts in half and hour once every five months. Most of those posts are memes, of which about 23% are homemade. He has one unfinished 200k word fic. The last three updates where June 2017, April 2017, December 2015. Thank you so much <3  I am just overwhelmed by everything right now.  Like my partner having no job by January. My mental health. My physical health like this year so far I’ve been told I have CNS dysfunction and FGID. I am being tested for Celiac. Oh and they found cysts on my ovaries then they tested and said it wasn’t what it could’ve been and now because of issues I’ve had my female GP who handles my contraception which is due up in January wants me to have another uhh thing to check the cysts and have another blood test because turns out I could actually have it..and it could affect my chances to have children naturally - I know what it was like for my mum she has the same condition and so if i have it I’m scared even though things are different now they know more and have better options its still like D: It is like seriously though I’ve got two new things wrong with me although they havent yet like found the cause of the CNS dysfunction all the specialist could say is I hit some markers for Fibromyalgia but not enough but in her medical professional opinion I do have some form of CNS dysfunction but just not likely fibromyalgia my mum took me to see this specialist first purely because she has Fibro herself so she thought well lets start with an appointment with a rheumatologist who would like be able to check for fibro and a few other condtions. So I kinda need to like now see I think the next step is a neuropsychologist but like I’ve been so stressed and ill right now trying to fight for my mental health treatment/therapy so I’ve not been like exactly thinking about making appointments for the CNS stuff. But it is impacting me it makes me get involuntary like twitches/jerks it feels like a jolt like a little electric jolt i guess down my body but not painful as such but it just makes my body go like suddenly my arms jerked to the left or Ive thrown the food in my hand across the room because my arm/wrist/hand w/e has suddenly twitched or w/e but sometimes i get the like electric like w/e feeling its hard to explain it like across my whole body from my head to my toes and at that point it can lead to me just sort of on and off twitching a bit more like less aggressively but more often in a space of time i usually end up sleeping it off so idk really I pretty much just always pass out asleep when I get that kind of feeling. And like I wanna do stuff to like help ease his worries about money and the burden on him to support us financially and support me emotionally. But I’m not fit to work like not even a minor part time job really because I’d be so unreliable with the way my body is. I am also affected by sensory issues and other things so it’s just not I couldnt realistically right now engage in work for someone.  So I am trying to do like online things but I don’t...I...just I am getting kinda overwhelmed by that too. Cos I dont know where to start what to do. Like I do but I dont you know? I mean...idk...Ive sold 3 pairs of sloth socks which was cool in the past like 2 weeks or is it 3 now since like i started like really seriously uploading to redbubble like before that I kept like uploading then removing my designs trying out different sites and so on I was trying to figure it out but I do now have it kinda figured out so that’s something. But now its like I’ve gotta get people to my freakin’ redbubble and its hard cos how an earth do i drive people to check out my store from the millions of others on the site. But also like I dont wanna like.. Idk I feel like and even though I have explained my situation on here I still kinda feel like I try to do it in a like not serious asking for help way in that i dont want it to come off as idk like I dont wanna be that person where its like i dont wanna be coming off as oh please help me feel sympathy towards me and feel sorry for me or pity me bs. I dont wanna be like appearing to be all I’m in desperate need pls help signal boost or buy to support me. Cos I’m not you know I have my parents to help we’ll be moving back in hopefully before xmas where I won’t have to pay rent. For me this is more about you know when my parents aren’t there I need to have an income for me and my partner hes disabled too...so full time jobs for the both of us is not likely especially if his EDS (edlher danlos syndrome) gets worse ya know?  So I suppose my worries arent like of imminent threat of anything but more like in the future we’ll be fucked if i cant set down the foundations now for the potential for a long term income from various online strategies. But just even thinking about the future and that far ahead fucking terrifies me.  Not only because of all this but because I never really thought about the future I didnt see one for myself as far as I was concerned I’d be dead or I’d be just...idk I couldnt even imagine a future or if I thought I’d make it I wouldnt really care you know because I didnt have like that light in me to want to live so it wasnt like I wanted to survive and thrive and i couldnt see a ‘happy ending’ for myself and now i can and I want to make that come true but of course its a bit hard to envisage a nice happy future with Kade when literally everything depends on having money to eat and have a roof over our heads etc and its just..UGH

I feel like trash too because I feel like my worth is valued by my output/labour and at the moment my output isn’t really bringing in cash right now so my output wouldnt exactly be deemed as ‘good’ idk its just weird its not like an I feel worthless thing like depression low self esteeem shit its more just a sort of social cultural consensus/belief that is ingrained that we are not really worth anything unless we’re contributing to society i.e working , paying taxes and buying things to reinvest in our economy etc etc..everything is about how much a human is worth in value of £ssss to big corporations and governments and rich people and idk its just like...they do have a point you know i cant just sit around and not do anything to contribute..because..then i feel like you know im not ‘sick enough’ to warrant that so im just in this limbo i guess completely self enforced by my mind which just makes it all the stupider but it is what it is. Venting this out has helped clear my mind some cos i mean at least its now out there in this void than just bouncing around my brain. Its why i write poetry too I guess idk why I just feel a release less tension SOMETIMES not all the time but sometimes it can help ease even if only slightly the chaos of my mind to just get it out there whether by chatting in person or writing it out like this just having it out there venting to someone or on a blog where people will read knowing like its not isolated within you still its relieving sometimes. I think I get what you're saying about the blurry line between fandom and an author's wishes, but I have a question. Toby Fox expected that people would make stories and stuff with his characters and sell them at cons. He said people could sell such merchandise if they're sold personally and not through a big distribution company. So fans can use his OCs to make a little profit, but they're still his own and his wishes are being respected. Do you think this is a fair balance?

I do! As with so much of my own fan content, I’ve played Undertale but haven’t researched much about Toby himself—so this response is based pretty much purely on this ask. That being said, a stance like that sounds very similar to what @valasania-the-pale​ and I were discussing in terms of personal transformative works vs. corporate transformative works. Why it’s important to keep some legal control over your intellectual property since, if it really is a free-for-all, you might be faced with not liking the resulting creation AND its level of influence. 

Big distribution companies and big corporations have a staggeringly different level of impact. If you’re a fan, out of hundreds of thousands of other fans, and you create a transformative piece that Toby doesn’t like… he can easily ignore it. Or even encourage his fanbase not to engage with that piece if it promotes something he finds unacceptable. In the end though it’s just one piece out of thousands, all competing on roughly the same level. That right there is the important bit. Someone is at a con selling Undertale fanart you don’t agree with and you’re pretty sure Toby wouldn’t agree with either? It sucks, maybe you’ll push back against it (like informing those who run the con, telling your own followers not to buy from this person, whatever your personal response might be), but in the end you walk two feet and find another table with fanart you do love and approve of. And everyone is trying to sell it in the same space for the same amount of (comparative) chump change. 

That’s nothing like if Undertale was in the public domain and, say, someone like Blizzard decided to have a go at it. That right there is a platform. A level of distribution and influence that would flood the market—both mainstream and fandom—with their products, products perfectly capable of choking out everyone else. Toby let’s people sell their own Undertale prints? Great! But why would you buy this grad student’s prints when we’re making higher quality prints at a much cheaper price? Do you even know about their prints considering we have the budget to advertise in a way this random tumblr user never could? Suddenly it’s not fans expressing their love of a piece while making a bit of money for their hard work… it’s corporations out to make more money in whatever way they can. Period. The essence of “I did this primarily because I love the canon and I wanted to” is mostly, if not totally, lost. The same can even be said of the fan who uses that distribution company themselves. I designed this t-shirt and now I’m trying to sell as many as I can to as wide an audience as possible. Obviously that isn’t bad. Everyone who creates a thing wants it to spread and if they’re looking for money, they hope more people will buy it. Artists deserve to be paid for their work. But there is a difference between selling shirts here on tumblr, putting them on a private website, even using something like Redbubble if you don’t have the ability to create the clothing yourself—and selling a product on a scale so large that it feels like it’s competing with what Toby himself might put out. Though as I’ll explain in a moment, I don’t think that feeling is necessarily accurate. 

So yes, there are gray areas. What if a single fan suddenly finds that level of influence (as we’re seeing more and more as “average” creators acquire followers in the millions). What if a hardworking, dedicated fan creates an Undertale sequel, something capable of standing up to the original in terms of quality and with an author capable of competing with Toby in terms of distribution. Does he have the right to shut this down? Legally, yes. Morally? That’s up to you. I’m not gonna pretend like there’s an easy answer. Personally I’ve always subscribed to the “Holy shit, two cakes!” argument as well as the “Fans are pretty devoted to the canon, so even if there was an Undertale sequel in competition with one Toby wants to create, I think fans would happily play both.” But I can understand how a situation like that feels like it’s veering too much into the corporate territory for comfort. And we’ve already seen it happening. Easy example is the Harry Potter Lexicon case. Rowling was perfectly happy to let librarian Steve Vander Ark create a lexicon in his free time, going so far as to give the website her Fan Site Award. The moment Steve wanted to turn it into a physical book though, something that reads as more in direct competition with something Rowling might write in the future? Lawsuit. Despite the fact that making money is the only real change here. Steve was still just a fan creating a fanwork in his free time. The website was already in competition with anything Rowling wrote (arguably it was more competitive as a free website, given that ease of access). I still believe wholeheartedly that whenever canonical authors publish something official, people are inclined to buy it. Regardless of how many unofficial works there might be out there. Yet we still have that knee-jerk reaction of, “No, no. Your work can’t be next to mine on the shelf.” 

Steve eventually was able to publish a (revised) version of the lexicon, given our rulings on reference guides. Nevertheless, the reaction from Rowling demonstrates the overall mindset: fanworks are great until they’re potentially too good, too popular, too capable of standing next to the canon as an equal. And it’s that blurring line of when something becomes too ____ that we’re all struggling with; when the fan is no longer just a fan, when the influence and quality of their work is in competition with the original. And is it really in competition at all?

The Lallybroch Library presents … SIREADH BROCH TUARACH: An Outlandish Scavenger Hunt!

What Is It? An online scavenger hunt where participants create items (rather than find them) and share their creations with the rest of the fandom. Each item has a specific number of points awarded to it depending on the estimated time and effort need to complete said item. The participant with the most points at the end of the hunt wins!

Who Can Participate? Anyone and everyone! Although this hunt is fan fiction-based, we have purposefully created a list of items that caters to writers, readers, and general Outlander fans alike! Please note that Lallybroch Librarians may participate in the hunt but are not eligible to win prizes.

Start & End Dates? The hunt starts now and runs for exactly 2 weeks, until 11.59pm EST Sunday 21st of April. The hunt is officially closed when we post a CLOSED sign on the hashtag #LLScavengerHunt. Winners will be announced by @thelallybrochlibrary approximately 48 hours after the end of the hunt.

Where Do We Post Our Items? You will post your items on your personal Tumblr blog. Just make sure to use the tag #LLScavengerHunt. and @thelallybrochlibrary. This will help ensure that we don’t miss any of your pieces!

How Do We Track Our Points?
