Darling Violetta, Bela Lugosi's Great Love, Cinemagazine, circa 1920s Cinemagazine-Edition of Paris produced without a doubt some of the most gorgeous postcard prints of the film stars of that period. This one is really very special. The last time we sold one of these out of our shop was five years and one month ago, and it's not as if we didn't keep looking for Miss Violetta. There was a damaged version of this card floating around for a few years that we could have purchased for the shop but passed on and finally we've found another lovely one. Violetta Napierska might be said to be the girl who broke Dracula's heart! Not really, of course, but maybe kind-of :) There is a band in Los Angeles named "Darling Violetta" which, according to a piece I read on them, took the name from the way Bela Lugosi would address his letters to Violetta Napierska when they were lovers. There is another story, that Lugosi fell in love with her while working at the Budapest Theater, and even wrote her poetry, but that his love was unrequited. Poor Bela. I mean that! Anyone who has watched Ed Wood a couple of times (great movie!) definitely develops a soft spot for the guy.   Miss Napierska did, in any event, star in a number of silent German films. Outside of this, much of her life remains a mystery. Gorgeously hand-colored image of Mlle. Paule Morly in a mermaid gown, by photographer E. Stebbing, from a wonderful series of French postcards published by Monsieur G. Piprot of Etoile publishers, Paris, circa 1900. What a wonderful headdress!! Paule Morly (born Charlotte Mélanie Augustine Martin, 1881-1926), was probably most well known for her interpretation of the Afro-Brazilian dance, the Mattchiche, or Maxixe, which she perfomed with Mlle. Marthe Derminy in 1905, at the Alcazar D'Ete. The music they danced to was from a song by the same name, La Maxixe, performed by singer Felix Mayol and instantly popular. This resulted in Mlles. Morly and Derminy being pictured on the cover of the sheet music which sold in uncountable numbers, copies of which may still be found available online for a few dollars (we're looking :). This card is another very fine example of Professor Stebbing's ability to prepare negatives, and Monsieur Piprot's ability to print them, in such a way that the end result was ideal for hand-tinting. Gorgeous Art Nouveau French Postcard with Gold Pochoir, circa 1900 by E.L.X. of Paris Beautiful! E.L.X. produced many of these evocative cards and they tend to be difficult to find, but we have no other details on them, sadly. The series also remained popular into the mid-1910s, which is a nice run, given that they were introduced as early as the late 1890s. Notice that this particular card has an undivided back, dating it to 1904 or earlier (probably around 1900 in this case), but we've seen others in this series that were printed on divided back card stock and postmarked 1915. The gold colored paint/substance that was applied as a pochoir (fancy-pants term for stencil :) for a decorative border is not all that terribly bright (a hundred years will take their toll), but we must say our scanner really doesn't do it justice at all. Wonderful, and extremely unusual Belle Epoque costume image, circa 1905. No attribution for the artiste or photographer. Please note: it would appear as if the actress's body stocking offered a little more "definition" than the publisher or photographer deemed acceptable, and so a faux chain mail bikini bottom was drawn onto the negative plate after the fact! We've never run across this before, and we imagine this would result in the image's publication being a very limited one. This is an old favorite of mine that is no longer in the Red Poulaine shop. But, I just couldn't resist sharing it, since it would make a great costume for cosplay. I just love, love, love the fins (gills?) on her headwear. Four suits and four queens, postcards circa 1900, illustrated in the style of Baron Raimund (Ritter von Brennerstein) Wichera by Marcus Munk of Vienna in the 1900s. Wichera's art was often copied in style, but not being experts we cannot identify the artist, other than to say the signature does not appear to be Wichera's.
