OK, but can we all just have a moment for The Captain and Havers using each other's names, because that was an absolute stroke of genius in the writing of this scene.
They can't say how they feel. They can't have an open confession. They are being watched by a room full of army officers, they are risking so much by even holding hands while The Captain dies.
Havers stops The Captain short when he's trying to confess. The little "I know". They can't say how they feel, but they both know what they want to say.
But then this happens
Using each other's names.
Not their rank. Not sir. Not even surnames.
Their names.
It's so subtle but it is so incredibly powerful. It's personal. It's intimate. It's a confession without words.
I will never get over it.

Watching the Ghosts finale and seeing that the hotel has a Higham suite, I like to think that Allison had some creative input on the hotel. There are a number of reasons it couldn't work, but it's nice to think that she named a room for each of the ghostly inhabitants of Button House.
Higham Suite.
Fawcett Suite.
Butcher Suite.
[REDACTED] Suite.
Colebrooke Suite (Button Suite would be redundant, after all).
Thorne Suite.
Guppy Suite.
Bone Suite (perhaps not).
Robin Suite.

Re: Thomas's Scottishness
Accents don't automatically define you. I'm born and raised Scottish and no one can ever tell where I'm from. My mother was born in Dundee but sounds as English as the dead Queen.
I can believe that he's born in Scotland but went to boarding school in England, or had very posh parents that emphasised Anglicisation.
The fact that the phrases he uses are most commonly used around small children - "wee bairn" and "haud yet weesht" suggest it's what he remembers from young childhood - when my nephew was born I did the same thing. I'd never tell an adult to weesht when I could tell them to shut up but whenever the baby was having a tantrum weesht was my immediate response.
Also if he is Scottish he's east coast (bairn is east, wean is west roughly speaking). Maybe his middle name is Angus because that's where he was born? Although it's also just a really common name up here. I wouldn't put it past him being from Edinburgh either, very posh and anglicised place Edinburgh

Its genuinely so interesting that sequence of events that lead to the Captain's death started with him stealing someone else's medal ribbon. There's something so intentional about him putting on these medals as a way of masquerading as someone who fits in at the celebration so he could see Havers again. Its almost like how he borrows this military persona in order to hide all the struggles he has with his sexuality in order to fit in - but everyone sees through it.
The medals are a perfect abstraction of the identity that the Captain has constructed for himself since the war began, and over the years as he becomes more comfortable with showing parts of himself he finally becomes comfortable enough to tell the others that all this time the medals that everyone had believed were his were just another thing he'd borrowed - another thing that wasn't truly his.

I simply cannot cope with how perfect The Captain's coming out was.
I particularly love the little touch that it's Fanny who tells him he's brave. Fanny. The woman who had a full rant at Humphrey about what an abomination same sex marriage is and how it's causing the downfall of society.
It's such a beautiful moment of growth for both of them

cap was so touched by Pat giving him a badge because it was one of the few badges he actually ever earned himself. and it was because he was working with people as a team. that was such a major moment for cap in so many ways.

Spoilers for the button house archives
Reading the button house archives. Tell me why Caps diary entries are so physically and emotionally upsetting? “This wretched war” “when will it end?” “will life ever be the same again?” STOP. It’s actually so sad especially how in the earlier diary entries he’s still optimistic but now he’s accepting that it won’t end soon and his life(death) will never be the same as it was AND he’s dealing with Havers leaving him 😭 Do you hate us Ben Willbond? Why do you torture us so?

We’re all still calling the Captain “The Captain” and that’s hilarious. We’re doing the same thing as the ghosts are. “Yeah we know his name, but he’s only James if he’s in trouble or if he’s having a sad sad gay death.”
