Plant of the Day
Saturday 13 January 2024
The tropical herbaceous perennial plant Etlingera elatior (torch ginger, ginger flower, red ginger lily, torchflower, torch lily, wax flower, wild ginger) needs a warm, humid climate. It produces a spreading clump with dramatic flowers which can be eaten when in bud having a crisp and succulent texture.

As promised, welcome to
Fun biology in TOTK’s designs
I'll keep this post updated as I go through the game. I'm going to skip the more general identifiable things like apples (they're based on apples!) because there are tons of more unusual species to talk about.
Overall, the really interesting thing I've noticed is that many of the more unique Earth-based lifeforms in TOTK are super ancient, like predating dinosaurs ancient, which is a really cool tie-in to the overall time-hopping plotline of TOTK. Specifically, they're found in the new areas (caves, depths) while the surface remains a bit more normal.
(There will be no plot spoilers in this post, and also I've barely gotten into the plot because I'm spending all my time wandering, so shhh no spoilers in the tags for like a month please.)
Most recent additions: More lilies, irises, wild ginger, spiny bones, pigeon extravaganza, plus added some more real photo comparisons to old stuff.
PLANTS
Bryophytes my beloved. Bryophytes are among the earliest land plants, waaaay predating flowers and even seeds. In our world, they’re small by necessity—they lack vascular systems to help move water around like other plants, so they have to stay small and moist (hence their frequency in caves in TOTK—though they do need some light in real life.)
In TOTK they’re quite large and I think that’s very sexy and art directors should give us big bryophytes more often
Anyway, there are three types of bryophytes: mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. First image pair is a moss, second is a liverwort. Those red-brown and palm-tree-like structures, respectively, are their reproductive structures.
Real liverwort photo © Graham Calow, NatureSpotUK
Not yet spotted: Hornworts! Did they forget the third bryophyte sister :(
I think these next guys are probably lycopods (specifically club moss, which is not a true bryophyte moss, thanks science.) Very old, but vascular, so they're a bit more evolutionarily recent than bryophytes.
Real photo © Gloria Hanley Schoenholtz, virginiawildflowers
All the enormous curly-topped trees in the depths: Ferns! They curl like that until they unfurl. Another very old plant, though younger than bryophytes and lycopods.
Real photo via The Cosmonaut, Wikipedia
Brightblooms and some of the other giant plants in the depths: Possibly based on a cycad? Again, a very ancient plant lineage. At this point, evolutionarily, they've developed seeds—that giant cone in the center is called a strobilus, and that's the seed structure.
These next few plants are angiosperms, meaning they produce flowers. Angiosperms are a more recent evolutionary lineage—still many millions of years old, but it took a while to develop flowers as a reproductive tactic.
Sundelions (left) are a fun recolor of a lily. There are also some scenery lilies (right) in various places—there are yellow ones that spring up when you turn on a lightroot (which gives them literal and thematic connection to the surface) and several other varieties, including tiger lilies, throughout Hyrule. Fun note, the sundelions appear to only have 5 stamen, while other lilies in the game (correctly) have 6. Seems to be an intentional decision to make it a more distinct fantasy species.
These next ones are Peruvian lilies/Alstroemeria, just used as a scenery plant but a very fun inclusion. Fun fact, not true lilies, so they're not deadly to cats like true lilies are.
Real photo © Dick Culbert, Wikipedia
Plum trees: These are also called out as plum trees in game! There's a journal in Kakariko that refers to the plum orchards.
Okay I'm a little proud of figuring this one out. Bomb flowers blend a few botanical references. Superficially, the fruit resembles a type of seed pod called a capsule—specifically it's very similar to a poppy capsule. The little red thing in the center is a nice addition to resemble both a flower stigma (reproductive part that leads to the ovary) and a bomb fuse. Now, poppy capsules disperse their seeds via wind, but there are other plants who do explode their seeds outwards as a dispersal tactic! This is called explosive dehiscence.
There is one tree in particular called the sandbox tree, AKA monkey-no-climb or dynamite tree (yes, really.) Their capsules look more like little pumpkins, but are known for violently exploding when ripe—they can launch seeds at 150 miles per hour (250 km/h) and spread them roughly 200 feet (60 m) away. The photo comparison is a poppy capsule but you should def go look up dynamite tree videos.
Real photo © PommeGrenade, pixabay
Fire fruits (and the other elemental fruits) grow on the same generic plant that looks kind of like it has grape leaves. Fire fruits resemble a specific botanical thing too though—the black netting is a papery calyx (part of the flower) seen in a nightshade genus, Physalis (golden berries, tomatillos, etc.)
Real photo © Helene Rogers, Alamy
I think this stuff is an Asarum, AKA wild ginger. I was actually puzzling over it until I walked past some today and went HEY
Not sure of the exact species but they're very green and heart-shaped and love being dense and low to the ground.
Real photo via David Stang, Wikipedia
Irises: Love irises, one of my favorite flowers and words, very happy to see them in game.
MISCELLANEA
Cup lichen! Lichen is not a plant, but a symbiotic structure of an algae + a fungi. Cup lichen is just a type of lichen formation that has a kind of vertical cup-like structure.
Real photo via Bernard Spragg
Geology crossover! Go look carefully at some of the whiter walls in the depths—they look like they have fossils of coral and other undersea hard-structured animals in them.
ANIMALS
Sticky lizards: Based on Diplocaulus, a very early (now extinct) amphibian! Their skulls are wacky. We're not sure whether the long sides stood out separately or were smoothly connected to the body by skin flaps, but the separate arrow-like shape is the most popular rendition.
Deep firefly: Might be a stretch because it could just be a multi-winged fantasy critter, but I think the "wings" and antennae are very reminiscent of Anomalocaris, an ancient aquatic arthropod.
Update: Other folks in the notes/tags have pointed out that they're probably based on a cryptid that's especially popular in Japan: skyfish AKA rods! They show up in photos and people think they're an alien lifeform. In reality, they're an optical blur created when a lower quality video captures intermittent flaps of an insect's wings, leaving sort of a many-winged smear in the photo. Thanks to all who left info!
Little frox: Another stretch because it totally could just be a Hinox-like frog, but every time I see the little ones I can't help but think of like...Ichthyostega, Mastodonsaurus, Eryops, and other early amphibians. They were pretty hefty—little frox size or bigger—and had with little waddling legs. This is less "I think it's definitely this" and more "it makes me happy when I picture frox as primitive amphibians."
I haven't detailed many of the scenery animals around Hyrule because most are identifiable with the camera function—it'll tell you that a certain animal is a heron or porgy, for example, and those groups are real, even though the exact species is made up. But I think the pigeons are fun because they're all crested pigeons. Pink-necked green pigeons may have also been the inspiration for the color palettes on the wood and rainbow pigeons.
Both pigeon photos via JJ Harrison, Wikipedia
Spiny bones: Not a specific critter, but those spiny bones that you can find lying around Eldin Canyon are vertebrae—possibly from the same thing that left those big rib cages around? The top spike is the spinous process where muscles attach, the littler spikes on the side are the transverse and articular processes. The dark O in the center is the spinal cord.
Also I made a friend who finally recognizes my purpose in Hyrule.
That's all I've got for now! Will add more as I keep playing.

For many years, it was thought that the name "Worm Moon" referred to the earthworms that appear as the soil warms in spring. This invites robins and other birds to feed—a true sign of spring.
However, more research revealed another explanation. In the 1760s, Captain Jonathan Carver visited the Naudowessie (Dakota) and other Native American tribes and wrote that the name Worm Moon refers to a different sort of “worm”—beetle larvae—which begin to emerge from the thawing bark of trees and other winter hideouts at this time.
March’s full Moon often plays a role in religion, specifically in Christianity, this Moon is known as the Lenten Moon if it is the last full Moon of the winter season (i.e., if it occurs before the spring equinox) or as the Paschal Full Moon if it is the first full Moon of spring (i.e., if it occurs after the spring equinox).

This holiday marks the Spring Equinox, which happens before March 19-22. It is the second of three spring celebrations (the midpoint between Imbolc and Beltane) during which light & darkness are again in balance, with light on the rise. It is a time of new beginnings & of life emerging further from the grips of winter.
There is much debate regarding the origins of Ostara due to the lack of primary sources about this sabbat. One theory is the name of Ostara came from the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre. Another theory is that Eostre is more of a localized goddess in Kent County, England. Despite the questions of her origins, Eostre is associated with modern-day Pagan traditions of Ostara.
There is no evidence that the ancient Greeks or Romans celebrated Ostara, although they did celebrate their own spring festivals, such as the Roman festival of Floralia & the Greek festival of Anthesteria. It was a time to honor the returning sun, fertility & rebirth.
Related festivals:
• Nowruz- March 19th
Nowruz marks the first day of spring & renewal of nature. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox. It is also celebrated as the beginning of the new year by people all around the world for over 3,000 years in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East & other regions.
It promotes values of peace & solidarity between generations & within families as well as reconciliation & neighbourliness. Nowruz plays a significant role in strengthening the ties among peoples based on mutual respect & the ideals of peace and good neighbourliness.
Traditional customs of Nowruz include fire & water, ritual dances, gift exchanges, reciting poetry, symbolic objects & more; these customs differ between the diverse peoples & countries that celebrate the festival.
• Holi- March 25th
Holi is a popular & significant Hindu festival celebrated as the The festival of colors, Love &Spring. It commemorates eternal and divine love of the deities Radha & Krishna. Additionally, the day signifies the triumph of good over evil, as it celebratess the victory of Vishnu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu. Holi originated & is predominantly celebrated in the Indian subcontinent, but has also spread to other regions of Asia & parts of the Western world through the Indian diaspora.
Holi also celebrates the arrival of Spring in India, the end of winter & the blossoming of love. It is also an invocation for a good spring harvest season. It lasts for a night & a day, starting on the evening of the Purnima (full moon day) falling on the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna, which falls around the middle of March in the Gregorian calendar.
• Easter- March 31st
also called Pascha or Resurrection Sunday is a Christian festival & cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus Christ, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, & penance.
Easter traditions vary across the Christian world & include sunrise services or late-night vigils, exclamations & exchanges of Paschal greetings, flowering the cross & the decoration and the communal breaking of Easter eggs (a symbol of the empty tomb) among many others. The Easter lily is a symbol of the resurrection in Western Christianity traditionally decorates the chancel area of churches on this day & for the rest of Eastertide. Additional customs that have become associated with Easter & are observed by both Christians & some non-Christians include Easter parades, communal dancing, the Easter Bunny & egg hunting.
Other Celebrations:
• Festival of Luna- March 31st
Is a feast day honoring the Goddess Luna who is seen as the divine embodiment of the Moon.
The Temple of Luna was a temple on the Aventine Hill in Rome, dedicated to Luna, the moon goddess. Its dedication was celebrated on March 31st, thus the celebration.
According to Tacitus, it was built by king Servius Tullius. However, the first confirmed reference to a temple to Luna dates to 182 BC & refers to one of its doors being knocked off its posts by a miraculous blast of air & shot into the back of the Temple of Ceres. That account probably places the temple at the north end of the hill, just above porta Trigemina. The temple was struck by lightning around the time of the death of Cinna, as was the temple of Ceres. After the destruction of Corinth, Lucius Mummius Achaicus dedicated some of his spoils from the city to this temple. It was destroyed in the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD & not rebuilt.

ᴄᴏꜰꜰᴇᴇ ꜱᴛᴀɪɴᴇᴅ ᴄᴀʀᴅɪɢᴀɴ - ʀᴇᴍᴜꜱ ʟᴜᴘɪɴ
Category: Remus Lupin X fem reader
Summary: University muggle AU- Remus bumps into you in a lecture, like literally… and turns out you have a lot more in common than you originally had thought.
Freshers week had killed you. You knew uni was going to be night out mad but on mornings like this where you had an early lecture with a new class, you regretted going a little too hard with your flatmates.
“Y/n are you up?” Your flatmate lily called out creaking the door open, her ginger hair frayed, with dark circles making her eyes squint.
“Yep.. yep I’m up… what’s the time?”
“8:35…”
“SHIT!” Your class started in 25 minutes and you had only just woken up.
You managed to get dressed at the speed of light, a cozy cardigan and mom jeans being thrown on as quickly as possible. You fixed your wild hair and messily applied a little makeup to brighten your exhausted complexion.
You left the flat with ten minutes till class waving a quick goodbye to your friends before running to the lecture hall. Just as you got inside, with One minute to spare, a hard body collided with your own. All of your papers and your thermos that you’d been passed by your flatmate before you left, spilled everywhere the hot coffee staining your cream cardigan.
“Oh shit! Shit, I’m so sorry…” a very tall, mousy-haired boy turned around. He dove to the floor and collected your papers, his cheeks red with embarrassment.
“Your cardigan… I’m so sorry… I was heading to my seat and I didn’t see you there because I’m pretty tall you see and..and-”
“Calm down… I’m fine.. really just shhh…”
The mix of your now damp body, your banging headache, and this boy rambling all became a little too much as you rose your finger to his lips to shut him up. He immediately did as he was told and scrambled to give you your papers back.
As the lecturer entered everyone began getting seated, leaving you following after the boy, the only remaining seat being beside him. You could feel his guilty eyes planted on you as the lecture began.
“So you’re interested in literature huh?” His voice whispered.
“Yes, I am… I assume you’re the same?” You replied politely.
“Yes.. look I know you told me to shhh but I feel really bad about me being a clumsy wanker…”
You couldn’t help the small giggle that escaped your lips, another smile falling on his face.
“I’m Remus… Remus lupin…” he offered his hand
“I’m y/n.. y/n l/n…” you shook his hand and then turned away, now paying your full attention to the lecture.
Once the lecture had ended a couple of hours later, you were practically drifting into slumber. The boy beside you had noticed and carefully tapped your arm, resulting in you springing your eyes open.
“Remind me to never go on another night out when I have a lecture the following morning…”
He chuckled deeply and nodded following after as you both exited the lecture hall. His eyes followed your figure as he finally got a chance to take in your beauty. The way your hair, although messy, fell ever so perfectly and framed your face, the way your eyes twinkled at the end of the summer sun, you were mesmerizing, it took everything in him to not throw himself in front of a car over the fact he had greeted you by throwing coffee on you.
“Right better get back to my flat..”
“Same here I’m headed this way…”
Remus pointed in the same direction as your flat and the two of you laughed walking with each other. Truthfully he just wanted an excuse to spend more time with this pretty stranger.
“Freshers is killing you then huh?” Remus attempted to continue the conversation.
“Yes, it is! My friends are insistent on going out every night… and I mean don’t get me wrong I love drinking but every night… I just want to sleep…” you giggled lightly.
“Yeah I can relate to that one… my friends are just as bad… I’m more of a casual pub guy I guess… clubs are just so busy!”
“I completely agree! And it’s always packed and gross and just… oh here’s my flat block…”
Remus’s eyes widened “you’re kidding…”
“Uh no I’m not…” you shook your head confused.
“This is my flat block too!”
Both you and Remus burst into laughter “do you live alone?”
“No I live with three other guys… we all went to school together… what floor are you?” Remus asked as both of you got into the lift.
“Four…”
“We’re on the same floor!? Are you sure we don’t live together…” he joked
“Unless you’re secretly a woman then I’m not too sure…” you teased
Once the lift dinged to your floor both exited and went to walk in opposite directions down the corridor “right well it was nice to meet you, Remus.. apart from the uh.. coffee..”
Remus blushed deeply again “sorry.. again… and yeah it was lovely meeting you… uh if you ever want to go for coffee that does result being thrown all over you then my flat number is 106…”
You couldn’t help but blush yourself and smiled “Mines 112… I’m usually just binge-watching the office and reading so feel free to knock whenever…”
Remus nodded a little too enthusiastically before they both reluctantly departed. Unknown to each other both of them immediately sighed after entering their flats. Both are already growing crushes.
“What’s her name?” Sirius asked as he attempted to throw popcorn into James’s mouth.
“She doesn’t by chance live with a redhead called lily? I met her in my classes and I think I’m in love…” James uttered dramatically.
Remus rolled his eyes and sat with his friends “I’m not sure I haven’t been over there yet… and we haven’t had a class together since… I don’t wanna be some creep who just turns up on her doorstep..”
“Why don’t we all go? We could bring them like a cake or something for housewarming purposes…” James suggested with a mischievous glint in his eye.
“A cake? A fucking cake James? Oh yeah, nothing says raw sex appeal like a cake…” Remus countered sarcastically.
“Ooh, you have sex on your mind Mooney? Bloody hell I wanna see this girl come on…” Sirius announced springing to his feet and running out the door. Remus panicked and ran after him.
A knock on the door made you jump out of your skin. You were just dancing around in your kitchen to some Bowie and the loud bang halted you in your place.
Having just got out of the shower, it shocked you to have someone knock on your door so late in the evening, let alone when both your flatmates were out doing a food shop.
Apprehensively you opened the door and the site before you was pretty confusing. A guy with shoulder-length dark hair was leaning against the door frame with a smirk, while the boy you couldn’t stop thinking about was wide-eyed and panting behind him.
“Uh… hello?” You questioned
“Hello beautiful I’m Sirius… my friend here Remus said some girls lived down the hall and well I thought I’d introduce myself…” Sirius stated with a flirty smirk.
Remus looked completely horrified. The last thing he needed was his friend, who seemed to get any girl he wanted, going after the one girl he had taken a huge liking to.
“Well hello Sirius… my friends are currently food shopping so it’s just me… and hi Remus..” you said making a point of waving at the lanky boy who looked at a loss.
“We were out…” a female voice called out from behind the two boys. Lily and Marlene stood shopping bags in hand as they looked at the two boys judgmentally.
“Marlene.. lily this is Remus and Sirius…” you introduced opening the door wider so your two flatmates could pack away the shopping.
“Pleasure…” Marlene muttered sarcastically as she barged past the boys with lily following after.
“Is there something you wanted?” You asked politely realizing the two boys were still standing there.
“Well sorry y/n we were just… well he was-”
“What my dear pal Remus was trying to say is we’d love to come in.. have a couple of drinks get to know our new neighbours..” Sirius stated confidently.
You chuckled lightly and as your two friends simply murmured in agreement the two boys waltzed in, not before texting their over two friends to come and join in on the phone.
Turns out James and lily had met previously in one of their shared classes, the two of them chatted away happily. Marlene got along well with Sirius and Peter, she and Sirius bonded over their dating tips for men and women. This left you and Remus sitting together, both of you too nervous and awkward to start up a conversation.
“I see you got the stain out…” Remus’s voice called out after a prolonged silence.
You looked down at the cardigan you’d thrown on and smiled softly. It was the same one he’d stained with coffee just a few weeks prior.
“Yes I did.. was hard though I was going to knock on your door for the invoice..” you teased enjoying his gruff laugh.
“I know you hated me apologising but… I got you this as an apology…”
Remus rifled in his pocket for a bar of coffee flavoured chocolate. When he saw it he knew he needed to get it but just wasn’t sure when to give it to you.
Your eyes lit up at the site and you immediately threw your arms around him “This is my favourite chocolate brand!?”
“Me too!!” He said just as enthusiastically which made you chuckle even harder.
*********
The following months flew by with casual encounters and Remus doing everything to accidentally run into you. The annoying part was you were none the wiser, your friends however weren’t as oblivious.
Remus was currently doing his usual walk home, which consisted of walking past your apartment and loitering in the corridor just so he may be able to bump into you. Today however it wasn’t you he bumped into.
“Remus? Not loitering about again are you?” Marlene said rather bluntly as she left the flat.
“Oh no… I was just-”
“Save it… I know you’re mad for her and between me and you the feelings are mutual… so I’m going to help you…”
Remus was in shock but appreciated Marlene’s blunt attitude. He needed to take this into his own hands.
You had just come out of your last lecture for the day. Marlene had mentioned how no one was going to be home which was a little odd. But either way, you made your way home.
By the time you’d come up the stairs and gotten to the corridor where the entrance to your flat sat, it was clear what was going on.
There stood your favorite boy with a bouquet of flowers, a box of your favorite chocolates, and the cutest nervous smile you had ever did see. You were ready to grab him by the shoulders and snog him right then and there.
“Look y/n… I don’t think it’s too shocking by now to realise that I like you a lot… and if we could maybe… go out sometime… on a date, I’d be honoured…” Remus stated proudly. It was clear he’d rehearsed it in his head which to you made it even sweeter.
“Of bloody course…” you answered taking the flowers and chocolates and placing them on the ground. Remus furrowed his eyebrows and panic set in.
“Don’t you like them?”
“I love them… I can’t kiss you if there are flowers in your face though can I?”
“Guess not…”
Both of your cheeks were now hot with anticipation. You bent up and gently let your lips glide across his. You struggled not to smile throughout the kiss, it was so sweet and soft just like the boy before you
“About fucking time…” Marlene’s voice called out from the end of the hall. Unknown to you, all your new and old friends had gathered to watch the interaction. Sirius’s idea of course

Game Assets Notes
These are plants shown in Dragon Age but aren't named in universe, just in their model files or through identification of the textures. Since most filler plant textures are just that of real world plants.
**NOTE:** When I mention they are not the known name of any plant, this comes with the caveat of being popular common names. Common names are highly variable and inconsistent. They depend on regional knowledge and association. Some travel farther than others. Common names are also not reliable identifiers.
Acacia: Black Wood ~ Note: Black Wood is a type of acacia. Both acacia and black wood are named assets.
Artichoke ~ Note: Identification comes from asset name, the artichoke flower is used as ornamentation of a box.
Banyan Tree
Boxwood ~ A type of shrub, identification comes from asset name.
Bradford Pear ~ Their fruits are edible, however their flowers are known to emit a smell akin to rotting meat. Identification comes from asset name.
Calla Lily ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters.
Cattail ~ Note: Seen through out DAO and DAI, identification comes from asset name.
Coleus ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters and in the Frostback Basin.
Crape Myrtle
Cypress: Italian Cypress, Topiary Cypress ~ Note: In terms of the Italian Cypress, in world it wouldl likely be called the "Antivan Cypress" given that Antiva is pulling from Italian culture, food, environments, and other inspirational elements. Cypress is a plant that is named in canon.
Daikon Radish ~ Note: Found on Dennet's farm, identification comes from asset name.
Dogwood
Elephant Ear ~ Note: Foliage found in the Frostback Basin, identification comes from asset name.
Fade Berry
Fern: Red Fern, Sword Fern ~ Note: The red fern isn't a real plant and therefore can be considered unique to Thedas. In contrast the sword fern is a real plant. Identification comes from the asset name for both of these ferns.
Forest Clover
Foxleaf ~ Note: This is another plant that is not real, no plant has this common name as far as I could find.
Gasbloom ~ Note: Seen in the Arbor Wilds, the Frostback Basin some elven ruins, and the elven ruins of multiplayer levels. Their identification comes from the asset name. There are two versions of the texture the "fixed" version is used in JoH dlc and thus explains the difference in appearance. This is not the name of a known mushroom.
Hero Tree
Palm: Curly Palm, Fan Palm ~ Note: Both palms are seen in the Frostback Basin, both are identified by their named assets.
Pear Cactus ~ Note: Found in the Frostback Basin, identification comes from the asset name.
Pine: Chir Pine
Ponga Tree ~ Note: Also known as the 'Tree Fern'. This is the tree you see in Val Royeaux garden as coming from Par Vollen, and throughout the Arbor Wilds.
Redwood ~ Note: Identified by the name of the file asset. Found in the Winter Palace, Exalted Plains, and on multiplayer maps.
Snapdragon
Trex
Waterweed ~ Note: In real life this is an entire genus not one particular plant. Though the six plants in this genus do share the common name of waterweed.
White Birch
Witchhazel
Additional Notes and Trivia
Ironwood - Unclear if this is an alternative name, the actual name of the plant, or both.
Morel - This mushroom is inferred due to the existence of Blighted Morel. However it is not explicitly specified there is a non-blighted morel.
Sponge Root - Though canonical as it is mentioned and shown in World of Thedas vol. 2 on pg. 138 with a collection of deep mushroom and surface mushroom illustrations. This mushroom was cut twice from Inquisition. It was cut from the base game as a craftable, it had a much different appearance from its final design, and then it was cut again from Trespasser. It does however still make an appearance in Inquisition as the inventory icon for Crystal Grace.
Unnamed Glowing Mushroom Is mentioned in multiplayer when there are two Lukas playing.
Unnamed Mushroom These brown mushrooms are seen in the Fallow Mire and the Frostback Basin. They are shown in two different sizes ranging from shorter than a dwarf to taller than one.
There is one unlisted mushroom, its assets is named "red mushroom" and thus is identified by textures. These is not a canon name but is included for completeness. Amanita Muscaria: More commonly know as fly agaric or fly amanita, the red top with white spots is an iconic in its imagery. You will find large swaths of these mushrooms in the Frostback Basin. Their assets is named "Red Mushroom".
Winterberry is a real plant. However, from what we see in DA2, it does not the same as the plant we have in the real world, just a shared common name.
Wormroot is another real plant name. However, due to the description in The Calling, it does not seem to be the same plant. In The Calling it is used to treat the venom of a giant spider. The real world plant is used to treat parasites in the gut and does not seem to hold any shared uses in folk lore, folk medicine, or western medicine practices.

Anyways uhhh... trip review! Yay yippee hurray etc!
What we did: We went to the botanical garden using one of those fancy two floor buses. Everyone fell victim to the novelty of it and went to the second floor, except for me and five other people. This made the ride feel pretty chill because there was not much noise and I got two seats all for myself.
When we got there we were given some time to use the bathroom before meeting the guides, so I took that time to wander around a bit and found this cool pond
Then, I went to meet the guide and they took us to an orchid green house (they mainly study orchids here). I did not gain any new information apart from learning the name of the orchid's modified lower petal. I did take some pictures though
Then, we walked through a secondary forest area, which really did not have anything particularly noteworthy apart from a lot of golden weeb spiders. We did find some ginger root plants and that lead to me learning that the liquid secreted by its flower is used as a higene product by some of the native groups here, which was cool
(The flower that was used by natives was the red variant, I used the yellow one because the picture I took was cooler. Nor sure if there is a substantial difference between the two)
After that, we arrived at the fern area (there are ferns there). Once more, I did not learn anything new and, once morer, I took some pictures
I had never seen a fern three in real life, so this was really awesome. There was also a pond with some water lilies there for some reason
The cactus area followed this, and it was really underwhelming. There was a fucking inflatable there and some people grilling, nor to mention that the presentation of the cactus was terrible. I learned nothing new (not that they discussed the cactus much). Also I got left behind here
After someone finally answered my desperate calling on the group chat, I managed to be reunited with my group. They where at the japanese garden (that is there for reasons), but my late arrival caused me to miss the lore of the place. There were barely any plants there, but they got some nice looking architecture (although I do not know anything about it)
(The second and third photos were taken by a classmate. I used them because I had barely any time to be here)
And that was it for the guided tour. They just dropped us on a picnic area near the japanese garden an told us to go to the reaserch building in an hour. It was really disappointing
In the meantime I got a cool shirt and saw some flowers
The building tour was like ten minutes long. There was a cool library some laboratories where they did micro propagation of plants (taking some meristemas [cells that allow the plant to grow] and leaving them to grow in some substrate while being shaken around so the cells do not differentiate and create roots, leaves or other stuff and then they divide those cells and use them to grow new plants[I knew about the practice, but not the process]) and a photography room where they take apart the plants and make informational images about their individual parts. It was ok
Then I went home the same way on the bus. The end
As for my final thoughts: This trip follows the last trip's thing of feeling way more like a fun little visit than an educational experience and I heavily dislike that. There where some moments in last one that were actual field biology that were absent in this one, so I find this one worse. The shirt I got here was cooler, though. I hope you enjoyed this because I basically doxed myself with this and do not forget to like and subscribe for more in depth biology lab (and more classes in the future) field trip reviews
Final rating: 6/10

no idea what timezone you exist in, so this may be somewhat late, but hey, it's still clanmew day for me, so have some oc name translations that i did my best on! coyotesong - uruooyanaya - wolf song-present-tense (no translation for coyote) star sightstalker - shai pipohhass - star sight sneaky (no translation for stalk as in to stalk prey) spiralstrike - lyyfkubo - daydream strike-hit (spiral in this context refers to its habit of confusing enemies before attacking, sometimes lulling them into a false sense of security, as well as how it tricked its entire clan into believing it was Normal and Well-Adjusted, despite being a murderer, so i thought “daydream” was a suitable translation) bonus: “the enemy-eater” - mwrriumyrgna (dark forest name; dark forest names are given to code-breakers post-mortem if what they have done is bad enough that they are considered to not deserve a name. technically, a starclan cat could have one of these names, however it is unlikely. these names can warp the appearance and even memories of the ones they are given to; a spirit may eventually forget its original name and even cats it knew in life. this dark forest name was given after it was discovered that spiralstrike had started eating cats post-exile from the clan to sustain itself and to intimidate other rogues and the clans.) cometblaze - yookepkafyar - shooting-star wildfire (comet is in-universe a post-mortem honor title referring to how he came quickly, shook up the world and then returned to the stars. out of universe it’s because his outsider name was halley as in halley’s comet, and also because i thought “comet tail” would make a cute name for the series he’s in) bonus: gingerblaze - raporkafyar - reddish-brown wildfire (refers to his ginger pelt and his fiery personality, the name he had in life) bryonyheart - oskpeskebabun - white tiny-flower-cluster heart (no word for bryony, but it has white flowers) bonus: bryonyblaze (same cat, renamed to honor his fallen mate) - oskpeskekeya (white tiny-flower-cluster ash) (his suffix means ash rather than wildfire despite translating to english the same to symbolize how his mate has “burned out” but that his name lives on despite this?? i dunno if that even works but the Symbolism, y’know?) nightslash - yoshomkachkubo - midnight claw-strike (no direct word for slash, name refers to his habit of hunting/patrolling at night and his ferocity in battle) BONUS ROUND: warriors-sona: mothmalice - ffyynyryr - moth/butterfly bad/rotting (no direct translation for malice/evil)
EXCELLENT use of symbolism, I also want to commend your additions to Clan culture here. I like that your Clans do postmortem changes, that's not something I do for BB but I think that SLAPS as a cultural difference that another Clan might pick up.
Let me get you some new words;
On Bryony
There are TWO types of bryony in this region-- Black and White. Both of these are extremely poisonous, but black is so toxic it's topically corrosive. It can cause blistering, it's that bad. You've described white bryony, the less bad type.
Black Bryony (Dioscorea communis), also called Lady's Seal and Black Bindweed = Awgahor (Sunburn + Bryony + Contraction) With dark green leaves, bright red berries, and greenish-yellow flowers, this is a detested and feared plant by Clan cats. Though it won't burn just by brushing against it, It can be made into a torturous poultice that causes intense pain to its victim. Because it's full of saponins (the lily chemical), it can't be licked off, either. A cat exposed to this has to find water and wash it off. In humans it's been used to treat bruises, but its side effect of causing that blistering makes it dangerous as a folk remedy.
White Bryony (Bryonia dioica), also called false mandrake, tetterbury, and wild vine = Horoma (Comes from a corruption of Green + White + Flower) Much less actively dangerous, but not less deadly. All parts of this plant, from its greenish-white flowers to its shiny berries, are highly poisonous. It can sometimes kill prey that takes a bite of it. FUNFACT: White Bryony was used as a medieval knockoff of mandrake! Its tubers would be carved in a way to resemble the bizarre human likeness of real mandrake and sold to people who couldn't tell the difference. Mandrake does not grow in England, it is a Mediterranean plant.
White Bryony is also an example of a neep, a climbing vine, that isn't ivy. It can be particularly aggressive outside of its home range, too! But thankfully they are native to this area and don't cause a threat.
Slashes
Time to expand out some cutting-words.
Gash = Aar A long, straight cut.
Gouge = Moar A deep, rounded score
Cutted = Kishgurk/Kishgur/Kishgu Implies unskilled cutting or a cut that needed effort, more like if you were cutting grass or skinning an animal than in the middle of a furious fight.
Slashed = Ashasar/Ashasa/Ashas Skillful, long-cutting. Used in combat contexts.
Crushed = Kraobur/Kraobu/Kraob Translates directly.
Ripped Open = Churr'rrich/Churr'rri/Churr'rrr To land a vicious attack of fatal intention.
Lastly, below the cut is the other combat words that exist currently.
Disembowl/Grallocking/Taking the guts out = Hgrrarl/Hgrrar/Hgrra
Mauling/ripping chunks out = Ygrraga/Ygrrag/Ygrra For fur chunks flying around. VERY violent.
To slice something off = Sassge'shss/Sassge'sh/sassge'
Unsheathing = Yskatchka/Yskatch/Yskat
Strike/hit (With Claw) = Kachkubo/Kachkub/Kachku
Swipe = Syyamyar/Syyamya/Syyam
Pummel/batter/rapid batting = Pabrpabrpabr/pabrpabr/pabr
Grab/Grapple = Akichkar/Akichka/akich
Fought/Fight/Will Fight = Arrlkatchyam/Arrlkatchya/Arrlkatch Comes from Arrl + Claw, fusing together as a single word from an older phrase "Compelled to Claws," reflecting how combat was not a desired thing in Classic Tribemew.

Spring's Rebirth Epilogue
AO3 Link: Here
Penelope giggled as she twirled around the poppy field dancing with others as the muses play. The sweet pomegranate wine Michael had made just for her wedding celebration was keeping her warm. Actually she could use another glass. Oh there's her friends!
As Penelope moved her way through the crowd she was greeted with many "My Lady," and "Your Majesty." She honestly kinda missed the time when these immortals used to ignore her. At least she could get through a damn crowd faster!
Breaking free Penelope plopped herself next to Phillip who was growing ginger. Penelope's hand glowed green as she added her own magic to the plant, bumping up the potency. If Penelope had to guess Kate and Sophie needed it.
Penelope's guess proved true when the lily nymph and demigoddess muttered their thanks and took huge bites.
"Are your headaches that bad today?" Simon asked.
"Yes," Kate groaned while Sophie only nodded. "So unfair you don't get headaches anymore Pen. What's the secret?"
"Honestly they stopped when I connected with the Underworld," Penelope replied. "Maybe if you got married yourselves they'll stop."
Kate snorted while Sophie playfully rolled her eyes.
"Oh and who should we marry Penelope?" Sophie asked playfully.
The small redhead glanced from her friends to her brother in-laws. "I mean the royal cure got rid of my headaches."
Kate made the face she always makes when someone mentions the High King in her presence. Sophie's face flushed red. The boys just laughed.
-
In the same grace as her sister Felicity plopped herself next to Hyacinth, who by the request of Penelope was not isolated away in corner with all her siblings.
"Felicity?" Hyacinth asked hesitantly.
It had been months, almost a year since Felicity made her vow not to speak to Hyacinth. Despite Hyacinth missing her friend it never felt right to approach her.
"Hey Hy," Felicity said, resting her head on Hyacinth's shoulder. "I missed you."
The old nickname loosened some of the tensions in Hyacinth's shoulders while hope began to creep into her chest. Taking a breathe Hyacinth said, "I missed you too. I thought you didn't want to see me anymore."
Felicity shook her head. "No, I didn't want to see you until I saw my sister again." The nymph pointed at her sister. "I see her and I'm going to be seeing a lot of her since I'm going with her to the Underworld. So now I'm here to see you too."
"I missed you," Hyacinth repeated. "I missed my friend and I'm so sorry for keeping the truth from you all those months ago."
Felicity lifted her head, now fully looking towards the moon goddess. "A part of me is still angry you hid that secret, but I find I miss you more than I am angry at you. Come visit me in the Underworld within the next six months? I know Penelope would like to see you too."
Hyacinth laughed. "Of course, we have to make sure there's no funny business going on with the new couple!"
Felicity laughed. "Speaking of new couples, I got money that the High King is the next one to get married."
Hyacinth burst into giggles. "Anthony? With that stick up his butt? Nah I'm betting on Daphne."
Gregory's voice was heard from behind. "I agree with Felicity and I want to add extra on that Anthony is gonna marry Kate."
Hyacinth rolled her eyes while Felicity laughed. "That's just your wishful thinking Greg."
-
"King Colin may I speak with you privately?" Lady Portia asked.
Colin nodded and offered his arm. While he may not get along with his mother in-law Penelope still loves her and for that he will at least try.
"Penelope is to return to the Underworld for the next six months," Portia said simply.
Colin nodded. "Yes."
Portia sighed. "I will be honest I may never truly stop mourning for her and how she came to be your wife. You broke the innocence all my daughters had before this, and that I will probably mourn until the end of time."
"You plan to let the Earth wilt again?" Colin asked.
Portia shook her head. "Not entirely, I'm not a monster, just a mother grieving. Penelope has developed plants that will grow in the cold. My fields shall be filled with those."
Colin paused. He turned to take in the agriculture goddess' face. For as long as he has known his mother's friend she has had a hard edged exterior, known to pick herself back up and push forward. Looking at her now Colin would probably describe her as tired and maybe a little bit numb.
"I am not sorry for marrying my wife," Colin eventually said. "But I am sorry for causing your pain."
Portia sighed. "So long as my daughter is happy I shall be okay."
-
"Michael I must congratulate you on this wine," Penelope said as she sipped her glass.
"And I must congratulate you on making a new fruit to make wine out of. We must really collaborate again, next time with Phillip too!" Michael said. "And of course throwing this fabulous wedding so I could finally make one of my friends wedding wine." Michael turns to the rest of their group pointing a finger at all of them. "One of you needs to hurry up down to the altar now so I can make more wedding wine!"
The group of friend's burst out laughing. Some making jokes about how two of them should take one of for the team so Michael gets his wish.
Simon eventually looks out into the crowd. "Uh oh. Pen you may want to go save your husband from your mother."
Penelope looked behind her and indeed her husband and her mother were off talking to one another. Neither looked ready to throw the other in the mud. But they've only been frosty to each other at best since Penelope started dividing her time between the Earth and the Underworld. Not that she thinks either would purposely cause drama at her wedding but best to safe than sorry.
Penelope stood, her legs a little shaky from the wine. Thankfully Phillip steadies her.
"Here I'll escort you over Penny," Phillip said offering his arm.
Penelope wine giggled. "Thank you Pip."
"Will you be part of the escort down into the Underworld after the celebration?" Penelope asked as they begin their walk.
"But of course," Phillip said. "Guiding any soul into the Underworld is part of my job."
Penelope nodded. She paused, but soon continued. "I shall need a right hand now that I'm officially coming back as Queen of the Underworld. One that can travel with me up and below."
"Yes you will," Phillip agreed.
Penelope looked at Phillip. Phillip looked at Penelope. Penelope raised an eyebrow and Phillip's eyes widened.
"You couldn't just let me be a hermit in my forest?" He groaned.
Penelope burst into giggles. "There's no one I rather have Pip."
Phillip groaned again. "'And you break out the nicknames Penny."
Just as they reached Colin and Portia Phillip gave Penelope's arm an affectionate squeeze. Portia hugged her daughter before accepting Phillip's offer to lead her back to Lady Mary and the Dowager Queen Violet.
Colin wrapped his arms around Penelope. "So did Phillip accept his new position?"
"He did," Penelope said. "And did you decide which of your siblings you're gonna play matchmaker for when I come back up in six months?"
Colin grinned. "I did! Don't you think Anthony and Kate would make a beautiful couple?"
"Oh you will need all six months to plan for that."
Colin pulled Penelope closer. "Or I can spend the next six months with my beautiful wife."
Penelope blushed as Colin pulled her in for a kiss. The sound of the crowd of wedding guests she had forgotten about cheering around them.
Beneath them the red light of the poppies glowed brighter.
