At work we did spiderwebs and googly eyed spiders yesterday. The residents had a blast. Recreation therapy is VITAL to life at all ages but ESPECIALLY to people with dementia.

Sight...
Sorting... Sorting is a very effective activity for sensory stimulation for elders and even young kids as well. This type of activity would obviously be a part of the "sight" stimulation as you are touching and feeling the buttons as you are sorting them, but you are also analyzing the texture and colour to know which bin they belong in. With this activity you are also using your touch sensory as mentioned, you are feeling the buttons but the ultimate outcome is being able to know that the blue popsicle sticks go in the blue bin and the red popsicle sticks go in the red bin, and so on. Therefore, we are using our sight to hit the ultimate goal. This activity is also very effective with spoons, utensils, cloths, pom poms, etc.
This type of activity is used in Recreation Therapy all the time, it is time consuming, distracting, and very effective. This is a great activity for individuals in a Long Term Care home who are needing assistance at all times and you need an activity to keep them busy, feeling accomplished and resurfacing our senses. Not only that, sorting is also effective for your brain and cognitive abilities to know and understand that the spoons go with the spoons and the forks go with the forks. This type of activity is also great for dexterity through the hands and arms as you are lifting iteams up and analyzing them, very effective when folding laundry!
Although this activity is effective, it is not a group activity, as a Recreation Therapist I would not implement this activity in a group, I would practice an activity that reaches more than one sense and domain of Recreation Therapy. Although, this activity is great independently and works great for a quick distraction for high maintenance individuals, specially seniors with Dementia, Alzheimers, confusion, etc.

Had adolescent patients practice mindfulness with a giant zen tangle puzzle! I searched google images for a zentangle pattern and used the website: rasterbator.net to expand the image to 12 coloring sheets. Pts listened to calming music and colored the detailed images. Coloring took about 30 minutes and those who finished quickly were given another sheet to continue. The last 15 minutes, pts worked together to piece the puzzle together and tape them. I then put their sheets on the wall to show appreciation for their participation and it adds a little pizzaz to their waiting space!
Goals: Mindfulness, relaxation, stress reduction, socialization and team work.

Hear...
A great activity for the senior’s generation while implemeting the sensory of hearing would be matching songs from the 1920s - 1970s! This activity would be great to be done in a group, as the more partcipation the better! We would play a song and have the participant’s guess the title and singer of the song if they remember! This activity would also be great to spark up some conversation and good stories that may help the participants think of and be able to share with the group. It would bring reminiscence, which is great for their cognitive abilities as well as hearing.
Obviously this activity includes the benfits of hearing and being able to identify different sounds. Although, we may run into a few limitations while implemeting this activity as we are working with the elder population, we come into contact with barriers that come with age, like loss of hearing. Although with that, we can implement headphones or even written lyrics for those who may have trouble.

Feelings Pyramid
I got this idea from Laura Stumbo’s Book of Leisure Education. Instead of utilizing Leisure ideas, I decided to try it with emotions/feelings. I always have a problem with my adolescent patients sticking with basic emotions during our group check in’s (good, tired, neutral). I drew this pyramid without words and had them come up with emotions that began with either the first or last letter of the previous word. I used it as a group exercise to have them work together. We did various rounds which they got really into it! After the first round began with the word “Feelings” they chose the emotion it would start with next. They began to think outside the box of more than just sad, happy, or mad. To help me also, I printed off a list of “400 emotions” to help us when we got stuck. They were passionate about not utilizing it though!
Wrap up discussed how they can utilize more than just common emotions to check in if they are feeling a different way!
Goals: Identifying and understanding emotions, teamwork, stress reduction
