Honouring Truth and Reconciliation Day: Remembering the Importance of Orange Shirt Day
Shaina Tranquilino
September 30, 2023
Tumblr media
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of truth and reconciliation in acknowledging and healing the wounds caused by historical injustices. Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Day, recognized on September 30th annually, serves as a crucial reminder that understanding our past is essential for building a more inclusive and harmonious future. In conjunction with this day, Orange Shirt Day stands as a poignant symbol of remembrance and reflection concerning the devastating impacts of residential schools. This blog post aims to shed light on both events' significance and highlight why they deserve our attention.
1. Understanding Truth and Reconciliation:
Truth and Reconciliation Day holds immense value as it acknowledges the painful history experienced by Indigenous peoples in Canada due to colonization policies such as the Indian Residential Schools system. The objective is not only to remember but also to foster an environment where dialogue, empathy, and understanding can flourish between Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous Canadians.
2. Recognizing Orange Shirt Day:
Orange Shirt Day complements Truth and Reconciliation Day by focusing specifically on raising awareness about residential schools' traumatic legacy. Initiated by Phyllis Webstad's story when her new orange shirt was taken from her upon arrival at a residential school, this day reminds us of the countless children who were stripped of their culture, language, identity, dignity, and familial bonds.
3. Learning Lessons From Our Past:
By commemorating these days collectively, we acknowledge that recognizing historical wrongs paves the way for healing intergenerational trauma. It prompts us to reflect on how similar systemic injustices persist today within various societal structures—education systems, healthcare disparities, judicial processes—among others.
4. Promoting Education & Awareness:
Educating ourselves about Indigenous history should extend beyond one designated day or month; however, Truth and Reconciliation Day provides an opportunity for all Canadians to engage in learning about the diverse cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. It encourages us to become active participants in reconciliation efforts by challenging stereotypes and fostering inclusive spaces.
5. Fostering Reconciliation:
Reconciliation is a journey that involves listening, understanding, respect, and dismantling systemic barriers. On this day, let's strive for meaningful reconciliation by recognizing the rights of Indigenous peoples and promoting their self-determination while building bridges between communities based on mutual trust and understanding.
Truth and Reconciliation Day signifies an essential step towards healing historical wounds, acknowledging past injustices, and promoting unity among Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Together with Orange Shirt Day, it reminds us that we must confront uncomfortable truths if we genuinely seek reconciliation in our society. Let us embrace these days as opportunities to learn from our history, amplify Indigenous voices, work towards positive change, and build a future where cultural diversity thrives within an atmosphere of truth, compassion, justice, and respect for all.

i know you’re busy but whenever you have time i’d love to hear your thoughts on the relationship between the academy boys and marc post reunion !
my thoughts have grown and evolved and changed on this over time... like the first time i got this question was directly post valencia 2023 and bez was like. in the press all mad and pecco was on top of the world and cele's collarbone was intact and mig was like. not podcasting and franky was pre marquez brothers putting him into the recovery position after that bad crash and perhaps saving his life in the soap opera sense and luca was on a DUCATI. overall things have SHIFTED!!! and for better and for worse as the last yearish has gone by, its become less like. abstraction based on the vr46 boys general personalities and relationship to vale + his baggage and more seeing pecco and marc being put on weird little couches together by their boss and bez hopefully being on the other side of that sexuality crisis/LEAVING the nest and marc and alex helping franky in a moment of need and luca AT honda rn now staring down santi hernandez longingly across the garage like its a whole new world... theyre all interacting with marc as a PEER rather than daddy’s horrible little evil ex boyfriend who burned his house down, which is an interesting little space to live in as they bring their specific baggage into this reconciliation imo
SOOOO taking all of this into account, i think its awkward and fraught and funnyyyy and full of all the little spikes that growing pains consist of, but its also like. unique and individual, rather than collective. now theyre all adults in their mid to late 20s-- theyre their own people more than ever, interacting with their coworker, who a few of them have had the opportunity to get to know in new and (not always positively) transformative ways. a few of them have even gotten to know THEMSELVES in new and transformative ways. and i think the (admittedly VERY fun lmao) idea that marc sort of. integrating into this community is something thats inherently hostile is the LESS interesting option to me.... bc it isnt just academy v marc its like. luca and pecco and franky and bez and even mig and cele all bringing their specific and wonderful character dynamics to the reconciliation table along WITH marc and all the reasons he might have to have weird feelings about THEM... and thats FUN...

What's your version of Jiang Cheng Gives Up? *chinhands*
Hiii! My version of jc gives up is very boring: he gives up on wwx and their shared past and moves on.
An overexposure to yunmeng bros reconciliations has brought me to one conclusion: I don't necessarily need them to reconcile. (Not because: 'jc/wwx is so toxic!' or 'jc/wwx deserves better than that selfish asshole!'. Like, I always roll my eyes. They are two horrible human - fictional- beings who deserve each other!).
But imo, post-canon jc has two priorities:
Jin ling
Himself
First point: he needs to be there for jl. Not only politically! But emotionally too. jl is going through a rough time jc too experienced: a loved ones betrayal. jc knows what it does to you. And listen, one of the things I love about jc is how he is trying his best. Always. In particular when it comes to people he loves. ('but he did a lot of things wrong', thank fuck! He is a traumatized character who behaves like a traumatized character. This scene explains so much about jc imo: jc knows that not having an adult in your life who believes in you is shit. So he tries to give space - in his way- to jl, while fighting his urge to protect him, because the last time every one of his family member was on a battlefield, they died.) So yeah, he is going to try being there for jl, in his imperfect way. And that brings me to point two.
jc has to recalibrate himself, to be there for jl: what he thought were truths, are revealed to be lies. All his life was a lie.
That's my favorite jc's speech. It's visceral, it's painfully honest. He is literally saying to us his state of mind: he is feeling guilty, wronged and confused.
'who am I?' hits hard, because who you are when you have built your life on lies?! Should he feel guilty?! wwx has made this huge sacrifice for him, but he has hurt him too: what should he feel?!
So, because I interpret jc as someone who overthinks, I want him to lose his mind over his doubts and start a journey of healing (or, what realistically someone without therapy can manage).
I want him to look at Lotus Pier, his home, and think: 'dang, what I have managed is incredible'. I what him to realize: 'what wwx made for me was an huge sacrifice, but my feelings are valid too'. I want him to be, not happy, but satisfied, when thinking about his life. And I don't need him and wwx to reconcile, because I like the bittersweet taste their broken relationship leaves in his mouth.
So, my jc gives up is: he learns to live with himself and jl, peacefully.

Let's all act surprised that I'm gonna gush about Loki for a minute.
My friend just hosted a workshop on past life reconciliation. I have zero experience with past life work of any kind. Loki was such a loving and gentle presence as they worked through showing me what the whole process looks like for me. When I struggled with separating my present self from my past self, He gently guided me back and reminded me to breathe. When I had questions or was confused, He answered them with kindness and patience. When I cried seeing what my past self had experienced, He held me tighter than I think I've ever felt Him hold me before. He held my past energy body in his arms and walked it right out of a toxic situation, a toxic place, away from all the toxic people. And he drove me (present and past energy body-me) to the Starbucks up the road from our house. My wife and I like to go there in the evenings when we need a little breather and can afford to stay up a little later. We'll grab a drink in the drive thru and sit in our car in the parking lot to just talk. It's a comfort place, physically and emotionally. So Loki took me there, got me a drink, and parked the car. And He helped me hold my past self in my arms and reassure them until they dissipated and reabsorbed back into my present self. It was an incredibly quick working. The journey was only 10 minutes. But in that short time He taught me so much about this healing process and just how goddamn much He cares. I've had Him dish some shit out to me about difficult situations before, but this past trauma was no goddamn joke to Them. Loki has shown up for me so many times, both to be my guide through journey workshops like these and just in general in my daily life. I cannot imagine doing this work without Them. I am sorry that I ever doubt how much They care. I wouldn't be where I'm at without Them pushing me and guiding me through so much. I can't imagine it happening any other way, and I frankly don't know if I care to. I am just so incredibly grateful in this moment to share this lifetime or any other with such a Deity. ❤️

Imagining a character meeting their dark alter ego and it pulls them in and hugs them. Tightly, protectively, undeniably with love, yet eyes full of fury.
You've unchained the beast you've kept locked away all this time and all it wanted was to love and protect you. It swallows you whole and you, too, finally feel free.

Tikkun Olam and the Ministry of Reconciliation: A Divine Partnership
A Journey Midweek Essay* “Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in.” (Isaiah 58:12) Tikkun Olam, a Hebrew term signifying the “repair of the world,” is deeply rooted in Jewish tradition, reflecting a central principle of Jewish ethics and theology. Celebrating Indigenous Brilliance: A Path Towards Reconciliation
Shaina Tranquilino
October 9, 2023
Tumblr media
In our continuous journey towards reconciliation, it is essential that we strive to dismantle stereotypes and misconceptions about Indigenous communities. Too often, the narratives surrounding Indigenous peoples focus solely on their suffering and trauma, perpetuating a one-dimensional view of their experiences. However, as Len Pierre rightly asserts, we must also make a conscious effort to learn about and celebrate the brilliance and success within Indigenous cultures. By doing so, we can foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the resilience and diversity that defines these remarkable communities.
The Importance of Shifting Perspectives:
For far too long, mainstream media has predominantly portrayed Indigenous communities through a lens of victimhood, emphasizing historical injustices and ongoing struggles. While acknowledging past and present challenges is crucial in understanding the systemic issues faced by Indigenous populations, it is equally vital to recognize their achievements and contributions across various fields.
Indigenous Brilliance: A Rich Tapestry of Success:
Indigenous cultures are rooted in ancient wisdom, profound spirituality, and a deep connection with nature. They possess an innate ability to adapt to changing environments while preserving their heritage. The world owes much gratitude to Indigenous peoples for invaluable contributions in areas such as art, music, literature, science, medicine, education, sports, activism, and more.
Artistic Expressions: From traditional crafts like weaving and pottery to contemporary forms like painting and sculpture, Indigenous artists have enriched global artistic traditions with their unique perspectives. Their work serves as a powerful medium for storytelling while preserving cultural identity.
Literary Legacy: From oral traditions passed down through generations to modern literary works exploring personal experiences or societal issues relevant today – Indigenous authors bring forth diverse narratives that enlighten readers worldwide. Their stories shed light on the richness of indigenous cultures' histories while providing valuable insights into contemporary life.
Scientific Innovations: Indigenous knowledge systems boast sustainable practices that have guided societies for centuries. Techniques related to agriculture, land conservation, and medicinal plant usage demonstrate a deep understanding of the natural world. By incorporating this wisdom into modern scientific practices, Indigenous communities contribute to ecological sustainability and inspire innovative approaches.
Sports and Athletics: Indigenous athletes have achieved remarkable success on national and international platforms. Whether it be in hockey, lacrosse, basketball, or other sports – their talent and determination serve as inspirations for future generations while dismantling stereotypes.
Activism and Community Leadership: Indigenous individuals have been at the forefront of social movements advocating for human rights, environmental protection, and cultural preservation. Their contributions continue to shape policies that promote inclusivity, justice, and equity for all.
Len Pierre's quote emphasizes the need to celebrate Indigenous brilliance alongside acknowledging their suffering and trauma. By expanding our knowledge about the achievements and successes within Indigenous cultures, we can break free from limited narratives. It is through this understanding that we pave the way towards reconciliation based on mutual respect, appreciation, and a genuine desire to learn from one another. Let us collectively embark on a journey that recognizes the resilience, brilliance, and strength inherent in Indigenous communities worldwide.
