i haven't really thought about whether or not concept photos should reflect the album sound, but i do think in minisode 3's case it definitely shaped my expectations! the photos and concept trailer had a whole magical realism with a touch of sad longing vibe going on... i'll definitely check out the woodz and onf songs you linked to (i already love love love black swan). and i do love your approach to listening broadly, not just different kinds of kpop but also different genres outside it! it's a good way to build your taste and figure out what kind of music works for you. like this year i've been trying to listen to more female artists bc i noticed that my spotify artists tend to skew male.

i also read your other txt album reviews and i breathed a HUGE sigh of relief when you said tinnitus felt stagnant / droning... other fans are always raving about how it's one of their best b-sides but to me the song just sounds too static for me to feel the same. and i guess that goes w the theme of wanting to be a rock but i personally don't find that compelling to listen to? farewell neverland and blue spring were also my faves on temptation and freefall, i think i just like acoustic / acoustic-esque songs haha.

i'm actually curious about your thoughts on tdc: eternity and tdc: magic! personally eternity is my fave txt album sound-wise so i'd love to know what your faves there are too~

lissie: welcome 🌻 anon! sorry for the late reply cause i’ve been drowning with deadlines (it’s my exam week so…) but i have time now to answer you!

i, for one, believe that visual and audio should match in some way. there’s a few reasons as to why i usually ranked comebacks so low if the visual teasers doesn’t match up with what the title track (at least) sounds like because they came packaged together. most kpop comebacks usually revolve more around the performance and visual rather than sound nowadays and i’ve seen a lot more reviews saying that kpop albums sounds more like a compilation as it’s not cohesive enough. so that’s why i cherish tdc: magic and eternity so much.

that’s why i was hoping for the magical, fantasy sound you mentioned on your previous ask to be in this comeback and not just deja vu! and of course, do check them out. i’ve been trying to get people to know more about onf cause their discography is top-notch. their producer is the same as the one who produced 2016-2020 loona songs (monotree). woodz also has a unique trajectory in his career from being in uniq, to soloist, to x1, to then focus on soloist. i love that he, txt, and dreamcatcher are the pioneers of the pop rock sound within kpop idols. and yeah, listening to expanding your music taste palette also helps in your kpop experience, like, you can actually appreciate more on songs fans usually know as “noise music” cause you’ll know the specific genres it’ll be.

ah yes tinnitus. i forgot to mention the killa in your last ask so i’m doing it here. i think people like tinnitus and the killa so much because of the performance aspect. txt is not known as the mature/sexy boys compared to, let’s say, enhypen (even though i hate that thought so much cause i feel icky towards the impact of it now). so when they have those types of performances, of course, it’ll pop off. sex sells everywhere, including kpop acts and writings fics. so that’s why they've become the more known b-sides recently and that’s why i said that the killa is trying to be tinnitus in a way that trust fund baby wants to be anti-romantic. sure, tinnitus is catchy af but i still think that it is too droning if listened to by itself outside of seeing the performance. my reviews are coming from the musical aspect, not the performance.

yes! i love acoustic sound so much. plus i think when it comes to farewell, neverland like the song itself is so cohesive and it matches the neverland concept so much.

ooh i, for one, think that both magic and eternity really embody each of their concepts both visually and sonically. i like tdc: magic (other than it's a full album rather than an ep) because it is just full of fun sonic experimentations. almost all the songs sound different yet still create a cohesiveness, especially between the run from new rules to can we just leave the monster alive?; but also with the concept. imo, it is a timeless album imo (tho having angel or devil as the last track makes it lacking in compare to new rules as a perfect opening track. i would love to make leave the monster alive as the outro track for the album)

as for tdc: eternity, i like it more because of the music and it does well in combining more of the fantastical side to make an album solely to tell about a dissolution of friendship from growing up. most of the songs there are part of playlists i made (i do like drama, but i like the slow-down version from the eternity concept trailer which i have put the soundcloud audio of below vv). can you see me is so cool, i can sing along to puma from the start, fairy of shampoo is so twinkly, i can play maze in the mirror on my guitar and basically can make a cover for it (if yall want), and eternally: best stage performance from their concert (i've been able to see it twice and i love both iterations) and such a dynamic song

i always bring this up when i talk about them but it’s really :( that they are the way they are now. like i was a fan because of their hyyh era and their songs about the troubled youth. and of course they can’t stay in that image forever (because we all grow up and it would just be v fake if they tried to continue it given their status and wealth now.) it’s just disappointing that they went down the ‘safe, disney image’ and are releasing generic mainstream pop songs people will forget after a couple listens. i’m no longer a fan of them now but yuh.

also not to mention how they essentially made kpop boring for me now lol i wish companies had fun with their music selections instead of aiming for whatever b*s has. like we will never get a group like orange caramel again (i know wjsn chocome’s concept was similar but it just didn’t feel the same. you talked about it before and i wholeheartedly agree with ur points.)

thank you for the consideration of censoring the name but honestly i'm not that worried about it. i do however find the increasingly creative ways people censor it to be extremely hilarious so keep it up if you would like.

not to level this at you in specific anon, because i know a lot of people share this sentiment of kpop being 'boring' now, and while there is an element of this that is influenced by bts, and although it is true we aren't getting the same level of wild that produced orange caramel, there is actually interesting and kinda weird stuff happening in kpop; it's just not by the groups that are getting the most attention. dreamcatcher has been out here doing horror rock since their debut in 2017. onf has put out two excellent summer pop tracks with fun and stupid genre mvs. i love this recent ghost9 track. i'm obsessed with the instrumental in the chorus of bdc's moon walker. just b debuted last month with a strange bang yongguk track and a very 2013 feeling mv. here's another weird and fun boy group debut, blitzers. a.c.e have put out favourite boys, the fave boyz remix, down, and higher as their last four releases which all have the most coherent and well designed concepts in the last year. and while i'm at it i might as well include take me higher and undercover. oneus put out a mad max themed performance video randomly for no reason like three weeks ago. the rest of the industry were cowards for not following up on to be or not to be with a shakespeare comeback wave. rip onlyoneof but they gave us a whole three week comeback of dick grabs. hanya brought my attention to this weird as shit debut track from a group that has now totally disappeared. knk's sunset exists. we moved on way too fast from the mv because taeyang was being cunty on music shows but sf9's teardrop has probably some of the most interesting shots in a kpop mv in the last several years. and we definitely moved on too fast from my favourite just some guy and goofy movie character woodz's feel like.

i think it's pretty fatalistic to view bts as having singlehandedly made the industry boring because honestly......i don't think they have. if you want to talk about the downturn to plainclothes styling....well that's shinee's fault. and the general trend to less dramatic fashion and visual tastes is not exclusive to the kpop industry, it's been a whole cultural trend. the mid to late 2010s were the rise of 'normcore' and we haven't burst the bubble yet. bts is just reflecting trends happening in the wider world, and in particular the western one. for the most viewed kpop mv of 2020 dynamite did....what exactly? it didn't really spawn any significant copycats in terms of sound or aesthetics, with the exception of maybe superm's we do if you look at it a bit sideways. although this is one of bts' better styled mvs, 70s retro did not make any resurgence in kpop styling, EXCEPT in magazine and fashion shoots, which it was already doing in the west. taemin's criminal was significantly more influential; i can think of at least three different male soloist mvs that borrowed heavily from it. honestly i think stylists and groups are trying to steer as clear as possible of whatever aesthetics bts uses, lest they accidentally doom themselves to a (perceived) slighted fanbase. plus, there's been a pretty sizable resurgence in contemporary hanbok styling, so even though there is a lot more outward attention going to things like international promotions for other groups and whatever the hell sm keeps trying to do with nct, i think a fair amount of companies are interested in maintaining the koreanness of kpop while facilitating broader global access.

and honestly, bigger acts have also put out interesting things in the last year. we did all see taemin's back to back release roster for ngda right? criminal? idea???? advice???????? fuck, chocolate was barely a year ago. whatever your opinions on yunho are, thank u is fucking brilliant mv. sunmi's tail. lie to me and tell me the mv for you can't sit with us isn't fun as fuck. i dunno what the hell the new nct127 song is gonna be like but the teaser photos and mood sampler are weird as hell and i'm absolutely interested. he's only kpop adjacent at the moment but jackson's 100 ways and lmly are really sharply produced low budget mvs with clean and interesting visuals. maniac shot to the top of my most listened immediately after it dropped because lia kim AND those slick horns in the instrumental???? ten's paint me naked was not at all what i was expecting but it's still fun as hell and has a pretty unique aesthetic.

the tldr of this whole three parter is this: bts has always been reactionary to wider cultural trends and that's been how they've made it this far. yes their influence on the industry looms very large because of the predominence of them on the scene, but it's mostly in the perception of kpop rather than in the artistry of it.

i don't think any company is going to be able to achieve what bts and hybe have, which i think is fine. they're the scale tipped too far. hopefully by now most companies have probably noticed that they don't need to cater to the western market so hard, and that it's probably not a good idea to offer their artists up on the racist chopping block of the western pop scene. you can market to an international fanbase without trying to gun for a grammy or for billboard or whatever. creating interesting art should be at the fore, not numbers goals. but we're just gonna have to wait and see what happens in the next year or so.

ONF UNIVERSITY AU

A/n : ok this is just the first (?) elaboration of the au. This is also meshed with senpai au. I actually already had a few moodboards (Yuto and Minseok ones) and a senpai AU of Seungjoon that opened up the idea, its just i did not have the time and luxury to expand the au. Another reason was that timing i am still learning about ONF so I don't want to go too OOC on things I am not familiar with.

To keep it short, the boys actually formed a dance club and they named themselves ONF

I do said dance club but if you wanna utilise it like F4 from meteor garden, it totally flexible

Also totally doable if you wanna use the university au as the main worldbuilding for other AU, examples, Sibling AU, or any BF headcanons I have mentioned like the MTL for PDA. MTL to confess and MTL to leave hickies, so do check out masterlist (that is constantly updating )

Also, even though it might retcon some setting I have already done, but it is totally doable for University AU to be the prequel for Office AU.

OH HEADS UP, FOR THIS AU I AM ALTERING THEIR AGE. Their real life age difference are about 4-5 years which is unrealistic to fit for the au, so shrink age difference to 1-2 years.

Hyojin : Probably musical student but if we were to jump out from stereotype,I do feel him studying marketing (analysts side)

OK if this boy does not finish his assignments in the cafeteria, then he is not Kim Hyojin lol. Constantly munching something while he trying to finish assignment or solve a problematic question

Even if Seungjoon drags him to library to do assignments . HYOJIN DEFO GONNA MAKE EXCUSE TO BUY BEVERAGE FOR THE 2 OF THEM AND SNEAKS OUT FOR A SHORT WHILE.

The type that try his best on getting good results on every class. But he never brags about it.

Should we give him a senpai au plot, I would write him as the senpai you have a crush on since high school and you did not know he attend the same university as you.

Changyoon : Design student for sure😉 Interior design, graphic design or even fashion design. Oh! Film Director also not bad? (I mean he has loads of ideas and thoughts also let's not forget about Incomplete MV)

Ppl which are not in their circles would be like, "how did you even get along with the others?" Because his majors are very different compared to the other 6

Hmm I do feel it is more like Changyoon did not make the first move to join the group. Probably the Capricorns/ENFPS (Seungjoon or Jaeyoung)

So maybe he kinda drop by to a short marketing class so that he can gain insight on how advertisements film can grasp audience heart. There he either met Hyojin or Seungjoon (maybe both) ,then only the bond gets deeper

After knowing each other he finally comfortable to be himself and does not feel awkward anymore...

Also including this hc here because I only thought of it when writing. HYOJIN,CHANGYOON, SEUNGJOON AND MINKYUN teaming up to sing something? Like them 4 have a YouTube channel that upload their covers, without showing their faces, using illustrations drawn by Changyoon

Seungjoon : Could go for science genre or maybe business administration? Also anything related with mathematics(that need flexible solving) might suit him too

Might occasionally appear in the library. Not really searching for books to read,more on giving himself the environment to complete assignments. But visits bookstore too

Maybe, the most social-able being in the group. Constantly waving or say hi to acquaintance/classmates passing by. Even though that, there are never rumours or scandals of Seungjoon being playboy. (But totally the first one in the group to get a GF, hint established in his senpai au)

Like people only notices the group because of him because of his social skills. Its kind of like the fairy who brings/enlarge the fandom lol

Might doing part time job at a cafe nearby university because of distance+ time convenience purposes. The other members of the group might occasionally hang out at the place, waiting for him to finish his shift or Yuto to finish his lessons and then they go eat dinner

Jaeyoung : High chance of choosing communication related genre or/also social science/sociology related genre. I won't be surprised if he will choose psychology or behavioural science

Easily to find him in library searching for books to read/expand his pov. Sitting beside windows

First impression would be the quiet good looking one that definitely gonna stay back to ask lecturer more questions

The second on in the group to get a GF. But very very low key.

Linking to the tutor AU I posted recently, he might be teaching online to gain extra income because he does not want to do part time job to exhaust himself as he want to reserve energy to dance. Which also the main factor he suggested Yuto to do online teaching later

Minkyun : Musical student but focusing on composing. To jump from stereotypes, he could be going to broadcast communications, to become professional radio DJ

He might also join another club which is established by uni it self to make radio broadcast that plays at the cafeteria.

Cues in other members all recognise his voice immediately. Lol if he qccidentally messed up on some wordings, the next time they meet they are gonna tease him for sure haha

OK this applies to all of them but I only remembered to include this during writing for Minkyun, the boys are totally banned from playing any games at the cafeteria lol (not a strict ban but they are loud lol.) So they changed plans to play game and hangout at home, with Yuto coming over to sleep over.

Yuto : the exchange student / the foreign student who is majoring in Korean language. High chance going for Korean language teaching later.

Once they knew Yuto's Korean Proficiency level are above average, the boys are supportive and proud of him af. Lol also his devilish hyungs teasing him that he should get a girlfriend, it is a way to master language lol

Cues in his hyungs helping him out by giving him small tests of Korean grammar

Could be the only one who lives in university dorms. But he gets to have sleepovers with his hyungs at their house during weekends (rent or family residence,up to you)

Even encourages him to try out online teaching beginners first to gain experiences

Probably feeling sadden the most when found out Minseok had to quit university. Also could not help feeling lonely when his hyungs graduated. (Some did extend studies but some did not. My hunch, Minkyun and Chang Yoon could be the first two to graduated first. Jaeyoung and Yuto being the last two to graduate)

Minseok : a junior who studies history and choosing Japanese + Chinese as sub majors. Who knows, he might choose translating/interpreting as major later (I mean have you seen some interviews where he used Japanese and Chinese, damn his pronunciation is good, trust me cos i speak both language)

Did not get to stay long, maybe just 1 year and a half then he had to quit university because his whole family are moving out from the country (no worries they contact each other online frequently). His hyungs defo doing a farewell party for him.

Even though short time, but he gained the title of university sweetheart by the first day he starts uni. 

Same as Seungjoon and Jaeyoung, the type to find him in library alot.

Of course gonna ask Yuto a lot of Japanese grammar questions

BTW if link to Sibling AU, should we link it to the double Kim household, Minseok did not drop out. He could have participated an exchange program and had to leave for overseas to complete a course at a better institute

Road to Kingdom Final Thoughts

I originally made a post before Road to Kingdom started on my opinions on each group so now I am making my final thoughts on each group.

<this will contain spoilers!!>

-Pentagon

-I had very high expectations for them

-But in my opinion they didn’t really meet them...

-I liked Pentagon for their brighter concepts so probably that’s the reason

-My favorite stage they did was their Sine/Spring Snow stage

-I cried watching it because of Jinho

-I also really liked their Very Good stage

-I am a Very Good enthusiast Very Good is one of my favorite songs of all time and Pentagon pulled it off perfectly

-Honestly even though they didn’t meet my expectations doesn’t mean they didn’t preform well

-I think all of their performances where top quality

-Although I didn’t really like the Kill This Love cover they did with ONF

-For what I saw either you love it or hate it (and I am one of the ones who hate it)

-Kill This Love is my least favorite BlackPink song but their is some parts of the song that I like but they changed/cut those parts out

-Overall Pentagon did a great job and hopefully they gain new universes out of it

-The Boyz

-After the second episode of Road to Kingdom aired I became a TheB

-No regrets and I recently bought their Bloom Bloom album

-I love each and every performance they did in rtk

-Danger is a masterpiece and maybe one of my favorite stages of all time

-I couldn’t stop watching it for weeks

-I also loved their Reveal Catching Fire stage it was jaw dropping each time they do something I kept thinking it can’t get any more crazy then this and the next second they surprise me again and again

-Their stage with Oneus was amazing Heroine is my favorite Sunmi song of all time

-Chanhee’s vocals really shined

-In my opinion they should have won the collaboration part of the competition but that’s my opinion 🙂

-Checkmate is an amazing song when I thought they couldn’t get anymore creative after Shangri-La Quasi una fantasia but I was proven wrong

-Rip Juyeon’s branch I didn’t even notice the mistake until someone pointed it out

-Also when I was watching the live stream for the last episode I had a mini heart attack when Sunwoo just fell off the stairs

-The Boyz really killed it they won 3 times in a row and they moved on to Kingdom!! 👏👏👏

-If they don’t gain a crazy amount of fans because of rtk something is wrong

-I was a little disappointed with their Warriors Descendant stage it didn’t have the impact the other groups had sadly

-My favorite stage form them is definitely their Lit stage

-I felt like that stage was more way better then their MAMA stage

-I also really enjoyed their Be Mine stage

-And out of all the original songs they performed at the last episode on first listen Come Back Home was my favorite

-When watching rtk I realized that Oneus is one of those groups that have songs only made for Oneus but because they are like that I feel like when they cover songs it’s less powerful and doesn’t have the same effect

-Probably the reason why it doesn’t have the same effect is because the songs they cover weren’t able to show Oneus’s strengths

-Whoever makes Oneus’s songs really knows Oneus’s strengths

-Anyways Oneus has a very bright future so please support them!

Last thoughts: I am so glad I watched rtk because now I realize how much I love The Boyz. Rtk definitely started a huge standard on what we are gonna see on Kingdom.

Groups I think would go on Kingdom: MonstaX, Sf9, Stray Kids, Ateez, Astro, and Nu’est (if they are gonna ask a solo artist to join possibly Kang Daniel).

I am literally gonna pull my hair out when watching Kingdom. I am also worried for The Boyz because they just came out of rtk and Kingdom is in the same year. Also how Younghoon and Kevin have injuries so I hope they heal by the time Kingdom airs.

“Lonely Night” - KNK 

I was anticipating KNK’s return. I was very curious as to what they would do after leaving their company and having Youjin leave and Dongwon join. But they did not disappoint at all. Dongwon proved himself very much and it’s one of my favs this year. 

“I’m OK” - iKon

I was so ready for this song. I love it so much. I was so ready for this song I was at school ready for it. iKon have never disappointed me with a song and this one is no exception. I adore it and listening to it makes me miss B.I. 

“Say My Name” & “Hala Hala” - Ateez

Ateez was always on my radar. But these songs really made me notice them you know. I still bop to them both daily and like this is peak Kpop to me. This is the standard I expect from groups. Ateez really is out here to kill

“Rooftop” - N.flying

This song might be favorite this year. I’m not the biggest N.Flying stan (Really getting into them tho) and I love this song. This song might be my number 1 this year. I love it so much.

“Want” - Taemin

Taemin is a god. That’s all I really have to say. Like Taemin really is on another level. This whole album is a blessing. 

“Enough” - SF9 

SF9 are a group to look out for in my opinion. They really have their own sound and I can appreciate that. I have all of their albums in my playlist. I listen to this one frequently.

“Tuxedo” - Ravi

If you want to be happy. Listen to this song. It just puts a smile on my face. I genuinely like all of Ravi’s albums and think he is really promising as a musician. 

“Thrilla Killa” - VAV

Still kinda sad Jacob isn’t in this one because wow. But VAV are underrated kings of the year. Thrilla Killa is such a fun song. I really have been enjoying VAV’s releases. 

“Miroh”- Stray Kids 

I will be jamming to Miroh until the day i die. I will be doing the Haka part of the choreo to this dance, until the day I die. 

“Vibe” - 1Team

This might possibly one of my favorite debuts of all time. The song is so chill and mature yet still fun and I feel like you got to hear every member’s strengths and I adore it to bits and pieces.

“Doves” - Gree

I really fell in love with this song after stumbling on it accidentally. The song is really different and I really really like it. 

“Tu Eres” - Newkidd

It makes me so happy to see Hansol find his place somewhere. After he left SM and the SMrookies, he joined The Unit and I was just kind of like when is he going to find his place, is he going to go solo? I’m just happy he found his place. All around this is a solid debut. 

“Bloom Bloom” - The Boyz

I have had a hard time getting into the The Boyz, I still don’t know any names or anything but this is the first song that really peaked my interest. I really love songs like this. It’s so fun and fresh to listen to and it puts me in a good mood. 

“Bet Bet” - Nu’est

Nu’est is really coming for me. I love every release they have brought out over the years. They are just so good. Baekho’s vocals are god tier and I adore this song. The album is amazing as well.

“Ah Yeah” - Winner

Winner have been so refreshing and just lovely lately. Their recent comebacks have really made me adore them even more. “Ah Yeah” is a song I have been listening to a lot lately and it just makes me really happy. 

“Undercover” - A.C.E

We all know how I feel about A.C.E. This song is in my top 10 this year, maybe even top 5. A.C.E have so much talent and the video and the styling are amazing. But like the rap is God tier. 

“Highway to Heaven” - NCT 127

I chose this song over “Superhuman” because it’s superior to me. Highway to Heaven makes me feel like a college student, going on a spring break roadtrip with my friends. Also in my top 10 this year. 

“Twilight” - Oneus

I didn’t put their debut in this, even though it was amazing because Twilight is superior. I love this concept, this song and these boys. Oneus are proving themselves to be monster rookies and I am here for it. “Now” is a really good b-side.

“Wave” & “Illusion” - Ateez

It’s not surprise that Ateez makes the list again. This album was the one I bopped too all summer and I will never not “HAKUNA MATATA YAAAA” 

“RPM” - SF9

I LOVE SF9. Look RPM is superior in everyway and form. The choreo, the styling, the song, the mv, JUST EVERYTHING. I was so shook when this song came out omg. 

“Side Effects” - Stray Kids

Boy my head hurts. I love Stray Kids, I love their songs. This song totally caught me off guard and as much as I prefer it when Stray Kids isn’t as angry, this song is amazing and no one can change my mind. 

“Questions” - Zelo

I missed my baby. It’s nice to hear his voice again. I love this track it’s really nice and summery. Looking forward to more things by my baby.

“Rolling Rolling” - 1team 

1Team are rookies I didn’t know what to expect from. But their songs are so chill omg. I love every single one of them and like I just feel hanging out at the beach when i listen to them. 

“Time of our life” - Day6

Day6. I love this song. They had so much fun with it and it’s just so good omg. Day6 for the win. K-Bands for the win. 

“Sunset” - KNK

Oh lord. KNK came for my throat. I want more KNK in 2020 because I need it. This song reminds me of a fashion show. 

“Give me more (ft. De La Ghetto, Play n Skillz)” - VAV

Fun summer songs always win for me. Also VAV always win for me. I really like the dance and just the vibe of the song. It is kinda generic but I still really like it and listen to it alot. 

“Boom” NCT Dream

Boy these boys have grown up so much. It warms my heart and makes me sad at the same time. I still listen to this daily. 

“Face” - Woosung/Sammy 

I love this song so much. It’s so refreshing and nice to listen to. Sammy’s voice is like butter.

“Come back home” - Target

This song surprised me. I generally don’t go into groups I don’t know with high hopes, but I really like this song and the choreography. 

“Final Kiss” - IZ

This is a band I have been getting into too. Final Kiss is a great way to end the summer and it’s a really nice refreshing and fun. The drummer really caught my eye, because he’s hella cute and the main vocalist is so talented. 

September

“Hit” and “Fear” - Seventeen 

Fear made me nearly crap myself at the beginning of the song. It caught me so off guard but in the best way. Hit is just such a fun song and a hype song. I yell along to it in the shower almost every time. 

“Lit” - Oneus

I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH. How they made such a fun song that I willbe listening to 10 years later is besides me. Oneus really out proving themselves. Another one for in my top 10. 

“Human” and “Daredevil” - Zico

I have mentioned in the past how much I love Zico and his music and this was the return I wanted. The Thinking album is just amazing. Zico manages to put every emotion there is into an album.

“Jopping” - SuperM

I will be jopping to the end of time. Look a lot of people hate the thought of SuperM and stuff. But like, to me SuperM is just alot of amazing in one group and the songs are really cool. So yeah and they created their own verb. 

“Why” - ONF

This song really put ONF on the map for me. It’s so different and nice. I love it. The mv is also incredibly and the vocals are too. 

“Wonderland” - Ateez

Again, no surprise. This song is still on repeat for me. I love it, I want to tattoo it on my forehead. i want Yunho to “Kajaaaa” all over me. I love it, love it, love it. Can’t wait to see them live in 2020. Also in my top 10 this year. 

“Good Bam” - N.Flying

A chill feel good song that I adore. Me and my friend talk alot on voice chat on discord and at the end of the night we say ‘Good Bam’ because of this song. It’s just so fun. 

“Runaway” - TXT 

I am not the biggest TXT stan, I like some songs and that’s about it but, Run away is an amazing song. The mv is lovely, the song is great and I really like the choreography. 

“Poison” - VAV

VAV came for my throat and they didn’t have to. Also in my top 10 this year. 

“Sweet Chaos” - Day6

I listen to this and i want to scream along. We got a lot this comeback, Young K’s forehead, a full album and all of Day6 in suits. Another one for in my top 10. 

“So So” - Winner

SoSo came out after I broke up with my boyfriend and let me tell you, perfect timing. This mv is one of the best I have seen ever and the song is amazing. Winner really stepped up their game this year. Another top 10. 

“Follow” - Monsta X

This will be a Monsta X era I will cherish forever. Enough said. 

“Savage” - A.C.E

We all know my A.C.E tangent I went on and I will not apologize. Another one for the top 10. No one does it like A.C.E. MORE A.C.E IN 2020. Also Wow’s rap in this song needs to be 10 verses longer, for my health.

“Calling my name” - GOT7

Got7′s best title track yet? IDK but to me it is. I also love all the b-sides and I feel like everyone got to show off their strengths. 

“Make this” - 1Team

The beat drop in this song is something I haven’t quite heard before. I really like it and the video reminds of like a 90′s video game which is pretty cool. 1Team really are my favorite group out of boygroups who debuted this year. 

“Balloon” - Zico

Zico man, I love this video and song so much. It encapsulates alot of my own emotions and it’s beautiful. 

“Blue Flame” - Astro

This song had me so shook. I have really been getting into Astro and this is my first comeback with them and I am not at all disappointed. Astro man...

“Fuego” - U Kwon

I love this song so much. I want people to cover dance it, the choreography is so fun and I’d do it myself but I can’t dance. I love the song and it was like the last thing I expected in December and it is in my top 10. 

“Levanter” Stray Kids

a bittersweet comeback. But still beautiful, I’m proud of how far they have come and Stray Kids have never disappointed me. The choreo is lovely and Seungmin’s vocals are beautiful.

Road to Kingdom Episode 4 Thoughts

The third challenge was for each group to pick one of their own songs and perform it. I really wish RTK stuck with the “king” theme, but I guess there are only so many challenges they can create revolving that topic. 

DISCLAIMER: I am a lot harsher in this review than any of my other posts. Please know that I do not hate any of the 7 groups and I truly wish the best for all of them. This is just an analysis of the most recent performances.

For the first time in forever, TBZ is not first in my book. Shocker I know. That’s not to say that I didn’t like their performance or concept but rather the other groups (PTG and Verivery) did better in my eyes. Let’s talk about TBZ’s Reveal (Catching Fire) perf. I’ll call it RCF for short. TBZ was the only group to continue a story from the second challenge. This gains major points in my book as I love plot driven performances. Anything with a story or clear objective gains brownie points because it’s what makes performances an art. You can dance to a song but if there’s no emotion it stays as a sport rather than a form of artistic expression. TBZ have shown their artistry fully through RTK, something they haven’t really been able to do before. I’m amazed at how they are able to control shock factor so well. I was worried the stunts of Danger would outshine whatever they had to show in RCF but they proved me wrong. There were less stunts this time but they focused on a much larger picture (pun intended). They added backup dancers and allowed the camera to take wider shots to show their formations. I just felt like they lacked a spark this time. If you can’t already tell, I prefer their Danger performance much more. A large part of this is due to the arrangement of Danger. The RCF arrangement was interesting and refreshing but there wasn’t anything really new. Maybe I feel this way because I’ve listened to Reveal too many times who knows. Negatives aside, I have to say I really liked the choreography changes. The part where Haknyeon is center really blew my mind. 

But here’s why I liked Verivery and Pentagon’s performance more: emotion. Pentagon’s is obvious, they used this stage to send off someone they really love. You can really see that the members love Jinho and that they have a deep bond. Pentagon was also the only group to mix two of their songs together, one being a title track and one being a side track (note: PTG and Verivery are the only groups who picked side b’s for their song). Pentagon’s arrangement was impeccable. For me, the new Shine sounded like a Jpop song (mostly because of the rock vibes; if you listen to Jpop you know what I mean), while still retaining the bright theme of Shine. A lot of people might say the performance was too emotional and not professional, but out of all 7 performances, Pentagon’s was the most meaningful and was delivered the best. The message and how they played with the stage was stunning and their little additions and references to other popular Kpop songs makes it so you will notice something new every time you rewatch it. Please watch this video where Hongseok goes into detail about the little easter eggs and the whole purpose behind their performance. I have so much respect for Pentagon and I could write so much more about this performance but I must talk about the other 5 haha (if you want to hear more feel free to ask!)

Verivery. VERIVERY. God DAMN did they really come back and hit hard. They definitely had the clearest and most well thought out performance of all. What differentiates them from TBZ’s story like performance is that TBZ had too much going on in my opinion. They tried to tell us a long story with not enough time. This is why so many fans have vastly different interpretations of their performance. While this can often be a good thing, I think you have to find a balance when doing a storytelling performance. Verivery cleanly executes their narrative of a nightmare and takes the cliche of “it was all a dream” to the max by going “SIKE” at the end. Their choreography was so well planned out and they were honestly very minimalistic about their stage, just like TBZ’s Danger stage. The shock factor is just right (my favorite part being when the backup dancers have the smoke come out of their mouth). Not only that but Photo is a SIDE TRACK. I cannot stress enough how brave of them that is. I legitimately thought it was a title track until I looked at their discography. They arranged their side b to sound like a title track, and not only that, they changed the overall feel of the song as well. If you listen to the original Photo, it sounds more like a bad boy song, but their RTK version is very much so horror/rock themed. I can’t STRESS how good this performance is. Especially because it’s such a contrast from their last performance. Photo is now in my spotify playlist and I have no regrets.

Now onto the last 4 performances. I hate to break it to you all but... I didn’t really like any of them. None of them made me think “wow I could rewatch this so many times.” Lets start with Oneus. LIT is my favorite Oneus song so I highly anticipated this performance. If you didn’t know Oneus before and only watch this stage you might think its a very good stage with a strong traditional theme. I totally agree, the traditional theme is unique to Oneus and I loved the instrumental changes they made so the song would cater more to their theme. The biggest issue I had with this stage was that It literally is just like their music video. If you have seen the LIT mv you will know what I mean. The dragon dance, traditional clothing, theme, sound, everything was too similar. The stage was grand but it just felt like a live version of their MV. 

I know a lot of people liked ONF’s performance. Let me just say first that they killed it and YooA was *chefs kiss* The biggest issue I had with this stage was its message and theme. They seemed to have a conductor/medieval theme but also the masks?? Like what? It felt so out of place and random. I felt like a lot of their stage choices had little to no purpose. I honestly still don’t understand why YooA was there. The duet dance was nice but why? It seemed like they were trying to tell a story but it just wasn’t clear to me. It looked nice and everything but that was about it. In no way am I saying the performance was bad, it’s just there’s nothing that makes me want to go back and watch again. I think the fact that there was a plot but no plot at the same time really bothered me and that’s why I didn’t like it as much. 

TOO has grown a lot since episode one. They are truly experimenting with the stage and I’m very happy to see that. I have the same issue with TOO as I did with ONF. There was a clear theme of “dark vs light” or “evil vs good” but why? What was the point? The theme may have seemed obvious but was it really? Were they trying to convey good vs bad, angel vs devil, justice vs injustice? I couldn’t tell throughout the entire performance. It’s okay to take cliche themes but with a show like RTK, there needs to be something more. I also hate to be harsh but some of their execution just wasn’t as clean. This doesn’t only apply to Chan (I think that’s his name), but the whole performance in general. The most obvious instance is the head twist part. But I applaud Chan for performing with 100% even after his mistake (which, by the way, he made look very natural. I was very sad when he kept beating himself up over the mistake 😞 you did great bb I hope you know that). Even if their age and lack of experience is shown in their performances, I must say they are really stepping out of their comfort zone and learning at a rapid pace. I have high hopes for them.

Now onto the last group. Golden Child. I was very impressed with GolChas first two performances but this one was a disappointment. I appreciate the use of strings and their classical arrangement (as I said in my previous episode thoughts post) but this performance was, well, dull to say the least. The only “shock factor” was the violin solo (which was very good btw), but I think it was too late into the performance. There wasn’t much that made me interested in the performance up to that point. I don’t know. There really just isn’t much for me to talk about because they didn’t really do much.(God that sounds so harsh;; I’m sorry 😭😭) I really think their second performance was highly underrated but all in all this third one was not it. 

As you can see my critiques for this set of performances are, well, a lot harsher. I think it’s because the bar was raised so much higher after the first three episodes. Overall, if I had seen any of these performances outside of the RTK context I probably would have been a lot more impressed and shocked. I wish the best for all the groups and no matter who gets eliminated tomorrow I want all the groups to know that they all deserve a spot in the Kingdom. Mnet is just trash.

Mina starts off her vlive by cutely waving at the camera, smiling, and explains she’ll start talking and answering to comments when more people have joined the livestream

while waiting, she softly hums to herself - fans quickly notice that she’s actually humming SF9‘s Into the Night under her breath -, after a few minutes, she finally introduces herself, saying she wanted to do a vlive to catch up with her Suns as she‘s been so busy lately

she begins reading through some comments, smiling to herself and greeting fans from all over the world who are sending in their love

she says she feels really good and refreshed today as she’s had the day off and was able to sleep in and relax for a bit - she also says she spent most of her day rehearsing lines and writing some lyrics

some fans ask about her drama - Mina smiles happily and explains how thankful she is for this opportunity, and that she‘s actually feeling a bit nervous, hoping that people will enjoy her character and her acting

she explains that her and Nam Joo Hyuk have grown quite close already and often hang out after a long day of filming, getting something to eat and sometimes watching a movie together

she says she misses seeing her members though, and that everyone is quite busy preparing a new album - besides their regular training schedule, Skitz is rarely at home, basically living in her studio, Ari and Luna are often working on new choreographies, AJ is busy with her MC schedule, Yueliang is working on improving her vocal skills even more (when she’s not reading for once), Rin is studying a lot of fashion these days and Hannah is doing very well with her studies

music wise, Mina says she hopes everyone is enjoying her weekly playlists and explains she‘s been really into The Weeknd lately, and that she also still listens religiously to the entire WOODZ‘ Equal album - she then sings a few lines of his songs Love me Harder as well as Memories, giggling when she messes up a bit, mumbling to herself that she should do a real cover soon

she also plays Sunmi‘s Borderline (she rambles for a few second about how talented Sunmi is), the English version of TWICE‘s More & More („Nayeon sunbaenim FIGHTING!“), and finally ONF’s Sukhumvit Swimming, saying she really loves the song and thinks the members looked very cute in the music video

she jokingly says it wouldn’t be her if she didn’t also play some SF9 - she then plays My Story, My Song and softly sings along to it

she also explains she recently watched the indie movie The Girl from the Song together with Luna, and really loved it, saying she really wants to go to the Burning Man festival now, as that’s where the movie was set

Vernon is one of my biases in Seventeen too! Him and Dino. In general, I tend to bias people who really seem to do their own thing and be comfortable just existing as themselves without worrying too much about how others perceive them. Of course, being an idol means being concerned with your reputation, but some people just seem so comfortable with themselves despite the pressures. Vernon has that quiet self-assuredness, and is happy to share his unique perspectives even if he comes off as "weird" or "spacey," and Dino is really infectiously confident without ever coming across as arrogant. He knows exactly what he's capable of, and he isn't afraid to show it.

In Pentagon, it's the same pattern. Yuto is a total sweetheart, but he also has zero problems making his desires and boundaries clear, and he's happy to share his thoughts. Kino is a very sensitive and artistic person and he owns it. He's never ashamed of his strong emotions, and he loves sharing his artistic endeavors, be they music for the group, his personal SoundCloud projects, or more recently, paintings. And Wooseok. I don't know how to describe him exactly but he really just seems to exist comfortably. He can be silly or serious, sometimes moody, he openly loves being babied, and he just. Seems to be at home where he is.

I would go on in more detail, and get into my Oneus biases, but it's getting late here, my laptop is running low on battery, and I'm a slow typer, so I'll call it here for now. Do you have patterns you've noticed in your biases? - multi anon

Vernon really does have that natural quality about him. I think most of seventeen does too actually. Like there are some kpop groups where you can just tell that maybe the persona you see is not who they really are, but seventeen just feels like they don't hide themselves. I don't know how to really explain it but they all just have that natural quality to them. I've always admired Vernon and how passionate he is about music. I also love how much he cares for his family and other members but he does it in such a subtle way sometimes. But you just KNOW he loves those he cares about to no end.

I haven't really noticed any patterns in my biases personality wise, but for years I swore the only people I would end up biasing were rappers. Like Kwangmin is a rapper, Vernon is a rapper, Yeonjun is a rapper, Yoshi is a rapper. Like for some reason I just kept biasing the rappers and it wasn't even intentional. Maybe there's something I find comfortable about rappers. I would say most of them are kinda calm but Vernon is really the only one. Kwangmin is super high energy and when Boyfriend were promoting he was known to have 4D personality. Which I guess Vernon was described to have one too in Seventeen's early days. Yeonjun is just a big flirt. I love his confidence in himself and his abilities. Its something I wish I'd have more of in myself so I really admire that about him. Yoshi is kinda hard to describe, like Yoshi is just Yoshi. I was trying to come up with words but like I can't. He's very much his own person, kinda quiet but also kinda loud, super artistic.

The first time I biased someone that wasn't a rapper was (Sam Kim) when I started getting into Verivery and ONF. I've very much of the proponent that your bias just kinda finds you and calls out to you. I like to watch the mvs for groups I'm trying to get into and just see who catches my eye because that person usually ends up becoming my bias. With Verivery my eye was always drawn to Gyehyeon, even from before I stanned them, and I don't really know how to describe his personality. I'm still trying to learn verivery's personalities. I have the names down but the personalities aren't there yet. I just really liked his visuals and I found his voice to be super comforting. Minchan (bias wrecker) I'm drawn to also because of his visuals and voice, but I do know that he does a lot of creative things for the group like filming and taking photos and I relate to that a lot so I guess that why I'm drawn to him. With ONF it was one moment, I didn't even know the group all that well and I just knew that whoever that person was they were going to be my bias. I was watching Road to Kingdom and the groups were introducing themselves and ONF were doing their introduction and singing their song and E.Tion just continued singing as the group stopped and he just like had me. In that moment I knew that was the member I was claiming. His personality is so all over the place but in a good way and I love that about him.

I hope I don't bother you with my question 🙈 I just recently started watching mixnine (and have no experience with survival shows) and I was wondering how it is possible for groups to enter without the risk of disbanding. The goal of the show is to create new idols, so what if some members are chosen and others are not? I'm mainly talking about Seven O' Clock and Knk Thank you so much!! 💞

hello! you’re not bothering me at all, don’t worry! right now i’m more knowledgeable on how the unit works than mix nine, but i’m aware that the group formed through mix nine will only promote for around 7 months so it’s not permanent! i’m not sure whether or not their contract allows them to promote in both the final group and their original group at the same time, but they will return to their respective groups (if they have one) for sure. i would like to point out that the goal of the show isn’t necessarily to create new idols, but rather simply to show off unknown talent to the public.

in regards to the risk, all of the participants have something at stake and going on the show could ultimately determine their entire future. there is a possibility that the show may make staying together as a group difficult, but there is also a possibility that any amount of success that they achieve on the show will follow them back to their group. for example, in produce 101, dia, wjsn, hotshot, and nu’est definitely benefited a lot from having members in ioi and wanna one, even though only one member in each group made it in the final lineup. simply having one member be known and recognized made a big difference in how successful these groups were as a whole and i guess the participants in mix nine thought the opportunity to gain recognition outweighed the risk of disbandment.

this isn’t a good explanation but if you want to consider seven o’clock and knk specifically, i personally think they’ll be okay and won’t disband any time soon! both are fairly new groups and still have a lot of time and potential to gain momentum, especially since knk is one of the more popular rookies these days and soc is gaining attention through the show. if hangyeom makes it into the final group and sangwon doesn’t, sangwon will simply return to soc and promote with them as a group of 5 until the 7 months are up and hangyeom can come back. by that time, the promotions as ot5 and hangyeom’s promotions with the mix nine group should be enough to give them lots of attention and hype for a while,  if that makes sense! same goes for knk and all the other existing groups: being chosen for the final group will most likely not have a negative impact on the longevity of the group.

since a lot of the groups who are participating are rookies or haven’t even debuted yet (i.e. onf, loona, dreamcatcher, knk, seven o’clock, etc), even if they don’t do well on the show i think they should be okay bc it’s expected and they still have time to be noticed. my main worry would be for groups who have been around for a while, like 24k or berry good. if older groups who have been struggling for years don’t find any success in this show (i.e. getting into the final group, gaining recognition, etc) then there is a possibility they will take it a sign that they should give up and disband. 24k has been around since 2012 and they recently expressed in an interview that if they don’t do well on this show, there is a high chance they will have to disband because they have no other choice. the situation between 24k and knk/soc is different in the sense that 24k has been around for much longer and are past gone the point where they can be properly recognized in korea, therefore the stakes are higher. with the success of one or two members, it would mean everything to them.
