La pérdida de Albertina Solanas instaló mayor duelo en unos que en otros, pero hay un hecho innegable para todos tras el hallazgo de su cadáver: la clase del ‘19 pierde otra vida. ¿Estarás tú entre los culpables? ¿O fue este un caso del pecado que se paga con el silencio eterno? Tal vez quedará en Isabel Bustamante y Sage Hwang descubrirlo. Ambos cercanos a la reciente difunta fueron los más afectados en la velada: la primera bajo el efecto de los hongos, el segundo con unas copas de más. Los dos, sin embargo, lo suficientemente conscientes de que no la volverían a ver, hicieron público su dolor a todo el que estuviera dispuesto a escucharlos, e incluso a aquellos que no.

Entre latinos pareciese que se entienden más de la cuenta, si es que no quieren creernos a nosotras, pueden comprobarlo de propia boca de Ignacio Alcázar que no dudó demasiado en acercarse a Izzie cuando el momento se dio y fue preciso. ¿Qué sucederá por ahí? Sin embargo no podemos decir que no es algo dulce y que quizá las malas intenciones las vemos por como actúan los demás, ya que Pasífae Fowler también parece aferrarse a ese chaleco salvavidas. Pero ya saben lo que dicen, chicas: el amor no nace de tragedias. Del otro lado de la balanza tenemos a Sally Safdie quien pasó un muy buen momento con Ellen Myers, la compañera de habitación que brilló por su ausencia en los primeros días de la desaparición de la argentina. Pero Sally no es mujer de una sola mujer, pues también pareciese que tiene un par de asuntos libidinosos sin atender con Diana Cieslinsky. ¿Por qué no irse por el segundo round como otras parejas del armario? 

Bueno, tampoco podemos culparla cuando pareciese que la mencionada se esfuerza en demasía por ser percibida como desagradable para el resto. ¿Qué pasa, Diana? ¿No te gusta que el ratón te coma la lengua u otras cosas? O tal vez no es el hecho de que no estés buscando quien te sacie los impulsos sino que también pareces estar bastante interesada en que esto lo haga el mayor de los Grigsby. Tal vez deberías de apurarte un poco en eso, o quizá solamente ceder ya a ser la novia de ficción de cierto cineasta porque, pelea aquí, pelea en España, la tensión es más divertida si la liberas entre sábanas, dudamos que Sally vaya a decirte que no. En fin, se sabe que Safdie pertenece a un trío adorable de amistad que comparte con Mia Kaplan y Peter Landry, y que si bien intentó fervientemente alejarlos de los vicios, parece que fueron estos dos quienes hicieron oídos sordos desde el inicio y que disfrutaron de placeres bastante culposos. 

Lamentablemente, su alcoholemia se puso a prueba con la aparición de Solanas. Kaplan, su compatriota, entró en un estado de shock del que no pudo salir. Su noche, que parecía ir viento en popa tras sus encuentros con Theodore Ryu y Zac Almaguer, tomó un giro amargo tras la noticia de la muerte. Tal su desespero que incluso se le vio de la mano con Arbury, con quién comparte una relación más bien tortuosa, pero que no tardó en auxiliarla incluso con tantos narcóticos encima. Sage, por otro lado, no corrió la misma suerte. El nacido en Corea del Sur pasó de ser un amigo amargado por la desaparición de Albertina a convertirse en un amigo en duelo que decidió emular las tragedias clásicas al surcar el rostro con un vidrio. Pero eso no es todo, queridos. La cereza del pastel fue el puñetazo que le propició al mismísimo Arbury para acompañar el de Percival Grigsby. ¿Es que no hay nadie que no lo considere culpable? 

Teniendo en cuenta que la amenaza a Rafaela Barceló probablemente no cayó en oídos sordos, puede que la situación para el rubio no se vea tan provechosa como para la española, que si bien puede ser inocente de la desaparición de Albertina, nunca lo fue realmente. ¿Qué le tenía tan afectada? ¿Ser el cuerno de la relación? Nuestras fuentes fidedignas sospechan que ese es el caso. Cariño, si esa es tu manera de caer en los brazos de Niall Byrne otra vez, no te la recomiendo, aunque eres española, punto extra sí tienes. Al menos más que la mayoría de sus conquistas. Y es injusto, en realidad, porque a final de cuentas la última conquista de Albertina, Seth Harbolt, no es que haya hecho mucho por su ausencia. Un trago por aquí, un trago por acá. ¿Es que solamente saben lidiar con las pérdidas empinando botellas? En un sitio como este, cariño, te va a pasar factura. 

Y aunque no deberíamos de darles foco, una mención honorífica a Lans Visser, Svetlana Kostornaia, Patrick Hanegan, Helena Stroke, Travis Myung y Azahara Villanueva por hacer algo que no soportamos que se haga aquí: portarse bien. ¿Es que no aprendieron nada nunca de sus años universitarios? Yo si fuese ustedes comenzaba a despertar, porque les diré un secreto: puede que Albertina Solanas no sea la última y que si es uno de ustedes van a arrepentirse por casarse con la botella de absenta antes que perderse en el bosque con alguien más.

Kind of a shame that 02 gets such a bad rap from being in Adventure's shadow (some of it warranted tbh) mainly because of all the seasons (can't say for certain for all of them bc I haven't seen the most recent couple of seasons) it's easily one of the ones with the most plot-relevant yaoi

Woo, my haul from today's stream. Did an unboxing stream that was a long time coming. Since the Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning movie was released on Blu-Ray/DVD yesterday, I wanted to celebrate by opening merch that I had been accumulating over the past months.

I did get the preorder of the the movie, so that was what I opened first on stream with the poster (forgive it curling in the photo). Quite pleased to have it now and will be rewatching it soon. I plan to do a watch party with the community Discord.

I kept myself from opening the Digimon Super Complete Selection Animation D-3s, both Ken and Daisuke's, for TWO WHOLE MONTHS to be able to get my reaction on stream. Glad I have these guys now, will probably brush up on my Japanese so I can appreciate Paku-san's and Kiuchi-san's voice work more (I grew up on the dub and recently rewatched it sub about 2 years ago). It feels good having a more authentic D-3 now, feels better in the hand, much like how the D-Scanners feel.

Then I went and did card pack openings for the Beginning Observer booster pack. Got a bunch of cards I wanted, got a lot of cards that might have potential and I want to hold on to, and some... I'm uninterested in. But that's how these 'gacha pulls' go. I don't usually buy booster packs, but I wanted the experience since I'm going to hold onto a good half of those cards I got (about a fifth have been added to my Ken-Stingmon deck or are waiting in the wings to modify it). I'm really enjoying the art and I'm looking forward to going to my local game stores to learn how to play the game well (and see how other players play and just generally meet other fans!). I don't really care about the meta, I just want themed decks that are fun to play.

Plan to do another unboxing stream when my 02 TCG box comes in with the Imperialdramon playmat and sleeves, so that should be either later this month (June 2024), if not in July.

After Jane leaves Eva by herself in the forest, she goes to Grung Hill, the farm that the mysterious woman suggested she sought for help. After distracting the security dog, she looks around the house and finds no one while looking through the windows and screaming to get attention. Still, it isn’t as if she can just go back with nothing to show for her adventure, and so once she finds the key to the pickup truck parked in front of it, she doesn’t hesitate and takes it to where Eva is. While she’s reassuring the injured woman, a man appears behind her, and hits her to the head killing her instantly /j, which makes her black out.

You were exhausted, the movie you had gone to see with your friends had lasted longer than you expected. The duration had been three hours, and the idea of a hot bath made the somewhat stiff muscles from sitting for too long cry with joy. It was at least six in the afternoon, the sun was hiding, leaving behind a beautiful sunset.

The air was cool, giving you a little peace. The place you were walking through was lonely, there were no people around, which was weird, since you should be near the park and– oh, you can already hear the happy cries of little children playing. You felt safe, in a way hearing people nearby gave you some security because if someone strange showed up you could run to the park, you know; Just follow the voices and you'll be safe.

Although in extreme cases, you would just use the pepper spray you bought at that cheap store. Fortunately, for you, there has never been an edge case where you had to use it.

You were very close to the park, there was only one more block left for you to arrive. The screams of the children were getting louder, indicating that you were close, you could already hear the adults talking and some dogs playing with their owners.

You were about to get to where the voices were coming from when you felt the air changing and suddenly, you no longer had a ground to step on.

The ground had simply disappeared, leaving you to fall into a black abyss. The laughter of children, the happy voices of adults, became more and more distant until you simply remained in deathly silence. The peace you had before had been giving way to confusion and terror.

The feelings and questions racked every fiber of your being until you simply couldn't take it anymore and passed out.

You didn't know what was in store for you or what would happen once you opened your eyes, if ever.

Maybe when you open your eyes, everything will be alright again.

The old woman who found you was looking at you with pity... again.

You simply decided to recap what had happened these last few weeks in a lousy attempt to ignore the look 'Laura' was giving you. Apparently, you had woken up in a small town called 'Bibury'... which was in England.

'England?!', was your first thought when you found out where you were, your shock was so great that you couldn't speak for a couple of hours. The kind old lady named Laura had given you some tea to calm you down.

She had practically stayed by your side, patiently waiting for you to come to your senses, for which you were profusely grateful. Sometimes you needed alone time to process things, but not this time, you needed company and before you knew it you were hugging Laura and crying like a baby. She didn't care that you wet her soft coat with your tears. Your worries, your fears began to surface, how-how would you get back home?

You cried for what seemed like the whole day until the moon came up and it was only at that moment that you fell asleep, but before doing that Laura had taken you to a rather dirty and small room, she practically tucked you in like a small child while you sobbed and held on to everything you could reach. She had stayed close to you until you closed your tired eyes.

The next morning, you had a soup for breakfast that Laura had made for you. Having already had breakfast, you called the first number that appeared to you with your phone, which turned out to be your mother's, it rang a couple of times before—

'Sorry, the number you have dialed is unavailable or disconnected. If this is an error, try calling to...-'

"What?" It had been the first thing that had come out of your mouth, this was definitely not something normal. Deciding that maybe it was just a mistake, you called back, only to get the same message as before. With a tired sigh you called your dad, and they answered- but it wasn't your father's voice, you called each of your friends or acquaintances that you had in your contact list, but none of your contacts answered, not even your boyfriend who answered the first two or three rings.

Strangely, your dad's number kept calling your phone, you answered twice before giving up. The voice on the other end that belonged to a man sounded strange, almost as if he was in...shock?, although thinking about it, perhaps it was just confusion. The last thing he said to you before you hung up was a "who the fuck are you–?". You just turned off the phone after the last four calls because it wouldn't stop ringing.

Leaving you in your current state, unable to communicate and in a town you didn't know. Laura kept looking at you worried from her seated position. Deciding that enough of wallowing in misery was enough, you got up from the comfortable sofa you were on and sat down next to her. Perhaps socializing with the only person you knew would be better for now, plus when your headache subsides you might think better of what to do next.

When the old lady took you in, you learned many things about her.

The first thing you learned was that she was 98 years old. And that she was deaf due to an accident she had as a child.

The second thing you learned was that her husband had been killed in World War II. And all because he was enlisted in the army to fight for the allied countries, he had died due to the impact of a stray bullet.

And the third thing was that his son died several years after his father's death, due to lung disease. You felt bad because you were using her son's room, but Laura had told you not to worry about it.

Clutching the small notebook in her wrinkled hands together with the pen, she wrote to you <<you can always tell me anything>>

It could be said that you were lonely and somewhat hopeless, but with Laura by your side you felt that very soon you would be able to find a way to return home.

Leveraged buyouts are not like mortgages

I'm coming to DEFCON! On FRIDAY (Aug 9), I'm emceeing the EFF POKER TOURNAMENT (noon at the Horseshoe Poker Room), and appearing on the BRICKED AND ABANDONED panel (5PM, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01). On SATURDAY (Aug 10), I'm giving a keynote called "DISENSHITTIFY OR DIE! How hackers can seize the means of computation and build a new, good internet that is hardened against our asshole bosses' insatiable horniness for enshittification" (noon, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01).

Here's an open secret: the confusing jargon of finance is not the product of some inherent complexity that requires a whole new vocabulary. Rather, finance-talk is all obfuscation, because if we called finance tactics by their plain-language names, it would be obvious that the sector exists to defraud the public and loot the real economy.

Take "leveraged buyout," a polite name for stealing a whole goddamned company:

Identify a company that owns valuable assets that are required for its continued operation, such as the real-estate occupied by its outlets, or even its lines of credit with suppliers;

Approach lenders (usually banks) and ask for money to buy the company, offering the company itself (which you don't own!) as collateral on the loan;

Offer some of those loaned funds to shareholders of the company and convince a key block of those shareholders (for example, executives with large stock grants, or speculators who've acquired large positions in the company, or people who've inherited shares from early investors but are disengaged from the operation of the firm) to demand that the company be sold to the looters;

Call a vote on selling the company at the promised price, counting on the fact that many investors will not participate in that vote (for example, the big index funds like Vanguard almost never vote on motions like this), which means that a minority of shareholders can force the sale;

Once you own the company, start to strip-mine its assets: sell its real-estate, start stiffing suppliers, fire masses of workers, all in the name of "repaying the debts" that you took on to buy the company.

This process has its own euphemistic jargon, for example, "rightsizing" for layoffs, or "introducing efficiencies" for stiffing suppliers or selling key assets and leasing them back. The looters – usually organized as private equity funds or hedge funds – will extract all the liquid capital – and give it to themselves as a "special dividend." Increasingly, there's also a "divi recap," which is a euphemism for borrowing even more money backed by the company's assets and then handing it to the private equity fund:

Now, you can't demolish that much of the US productive economy without attracting some negative attention, so the looter spin-machine has perfected some talking points to hand-wave away the criticism that borrowing money using something you don't own as collateral in order to buy it and wreck it is obviously a dishonest (and potentially criminal) destructive practice.

The most common one is that borrowing money against an asset you don't own is just like getting a mortgage. This is such a badly flawed analogy that it is really a testament to the efficacy of the baffle-em-with-bullshit gambit to convince us all that we're too stupid to understand how finance works.

Sure: if I put an offer on your house, I will go to my credit union and ask the for a mortgage that uses your house as collateral. But the difference here is that you own your house, and the only way I can buy it – the only way I can actually get that mortgage – is if you agree to sell it to me.

Owner-occupied homes typically have uncomplicated ownership structures. Typically, they're owned by an individual or a couple. Sometimes they're the property of an estate that's divided up among multiple heirs, whose relationship is mediated by a will and a probate court. Title can be contested through a divorce, where disputes are settled by a divorce court. At the outer edge of complexity, you get things like polycules or lifelong roommates who've formed an LLC s they can own a house among several parties, but the LLC will have bylaws, and typically all those co-owners will be fully engaged in any sale process.

Leveraged buyouts don't target companies with simple ownership structures. They depend on firms whose equity is split among many parties, some of whom will be utterly disengaged from the firm's daily operations – say, the kids of an early employee who got a big stock grant but left before the company grew up. The looter needs to convince a few of these "owners" to force a vote on the acquisition, and then rely on the idea that many of the other shareholders will simply abstain from a vote. Asset managers are ubiquitous absentee owners who own large stakes in literally every major firm in the economy. The big funds – Vanguard, Blackrock, State Street – "buy the whole market" (a big share in every top-capitalized firm on a given stock exchange) and then seek to deliver returns equal to the overall performance of the market. If the market goes up by 5%, the index funds need to grow by 5%. If the market goes down by 5%, then so do those funds. The managers of those funds are trying to match the performance of the market, not improve on it (by voting on corporate governance decisions, say), or to beat it (by only buying stocks of companies they judge to be good bets):

Your family home is nothing like one of these companies. It doesn't have a bunch of minority shareholders who can force a vote, or a large block of disengaged "owners" who won't show up when that vote is called. There isn't a class of senior managers – Chief Kitchen Officer! – who have been granted large blocks of options that let them have a say in whether you will become homeless.

Now, there are homes that fit this description, and they're a fucking disaster. These are the "heirs property" homes, generally owned by the Black descendants of enslaved people who were given the proverbial 40 acres and a mule. Many prosperous majority Black settlements in the American South are composed of these kinds of lots.

Given the historical context – illiterate ex-slaves getting property as reparations or as reward for fighting with the Union Army – the titles for these lands are often muddy, with informal transfers from parents to kids sorted out with handshakes and not memorialized by hiring lawyers to update the deeds. This has created an irresistible opportunity for a certain kind of scammer, who will pull the deeds, hire genealogists to map the family trees of the original owners, and locate distant descendants with homeopathically small claims on the property. These descendants don't even know they own these claims, don't even know about these ancestors, and when they're offered a few thousand bucks for their claim, they naturally take it.

Now, armed with a claim on the property, the heirs property scammers force an auction of it, keeping the process under wraps until the last instant. If they're really lucky, they're the only bidder and they can buy the entire property for pennies on the dollar and then evict the family that has lived on it since Reconstruction. Sometimes, the family will get wind of the scam and show up to bid against the scammer, but the scammer has deep capital reserves and can easily win the auction, with the same result:

A similar outrage has been playing out for years in Hawai'i, where indigenous familial claims on ancestral lands have been diffused through descendants who don't even know they're co-owner of a place where their distant cousins have lived since pre-colonial times. These descendants are offered small sums to part with their stakes, which allows the speculator to force a sale and kick the indigenous Hawai'ians off their family lands so they can be turned into condos or hotels. Mark Zuckerberg used this "quiet title and partition" scam to dispossess hundreds of Hawai'ian families:

Heirs property and quiet title and partition are a much better analogy to a leveraged buyout than a mortgage is, because they're ways of stealing something valuable from people who depend on it and maintain it, and smashing it and selling it off.

Strip away all the jargon, and private equity is just another scam, albeit one with pretensions to respectability. Its practitioners are ripoff artists. You know the notorious "carried interest loophole" that politicians periodically discover and decry? "Carried interest" has nothing to do with the interest on a loan. The "carried interest" rule dates back to 16th century sea-captains, and it refers to the "interest" they had in the cargo they "carried":

Private equity managers are like sea captains in exactly the same way that leveraged buyouts are like mortgages: not at all.

And it's not like private equity is good to its investors: scams like "continuation funds" allow PE looters to steal all the money they made from strip mining valuable companies, so they show no profits on paper when it comes time to pay their investors:

Those investors are just as bamboozled as we are, which is why they keep giving more money to PE funds. Today, the "dry powder" (uninvested money) that PE holds has reached an all-time record high of $2.62 trillion – money from pension funds and rich people and sovereign wealth funds, stockpiled in anticipation of buying and destroying even more profitable, productive, useful businesses:

The practices of PE are crooked as hell, and it's only the fact that they use euphemisms and deceptive analogies to home mortgages that keeps them from being shut down. The more we strip away the bullshit, the faster we'll be able to kill this cancer, and the more of the real economy we'll be able to preserve.

In this episode of the Game Informer show, Game Informer talk some more about their trip to BioWare's studio for the DA:TV cover story, when BioWare showed them hours of DA:TV content while playing it live.

Some notes from this and from what they said:

Wesley LeBlanc wasn't a huge DA fan and he went in with no expectations. The job to go to BW for this just landed on his plate due to other peoples' schedules. After seeing the game, it's probably his most anticipated game for the rest of the year and the one he's most looking forwards to

The game really wowed him and stuck with him, he said he is thrilled about it and is engrossed in the fantasy it's bringing

The visuals and world finally feel like what BioWare has maybe always wanted to make

This is the game where the team said, yeah, we feel fully in command of the Frostbite engine, and it shows

The world is more like Fable-type whimsy than prior DA games. It has a high fantasy feel

BW want new people to play the game. They're very aware that it's been 10 years since the last game and the game does a good job of catching people up

Rook as the PC really has no idea what's going on with Solas and all the other lore-specific stuff that's happening in the game, so they kind of act as the stand-in for newer players or people who have not caught up on the lore

But it's not just a game for newcomers, there is still a lot to chew on in the game for hardcore DA fans. BioWare were saying that they know their community, what it wants and what it's looking for out of these characters

Wesley enjoyed the music, visual design, and voice acting

Nothing that they saw about the game stood out as worrisome to him

Wesley: "On the topic of the [Dragon Age] fanbase, I just wanna give a shoutout to that community, because, wow, I did not, I knew people would be stoked about this cover, but people are really stoked about this cover. And it’s really funny, the day that we announced it, I got like hundreds of new followers. Anytime, if I tweet about Erdtree or Destiny 2, I get like my normal amount of likes, like, a dozen maybe, y’know, whatever. If I tweet about Dragon Age, it’s like. Today I tweeted, ‘my next feature is coming at 3pm’ and it’s at 1000 likes, it’s so funny, like, this community is like rabid for information, which makes sense if you haven’t gotten a game in 10 years. But yeah, so like, shoutout to y’all, I’m loving you guys reading the articles and telling me what you wanna hear about. So if you have any questions or anything, get at me on Twitter for sure, and I will see what I can cook up with some writing for you. But yeah, shoutout to the BioWare community, y’all crazy.”

= First of all I love how this book skews darker and more mature but still has elements of classic PR camp like this big villain-ending bomb being called a "Benevolator"

= Second of all I'm glad this book is furthering the implication from the show that Kim does understand Billy's talk perfectly well, it's just that she thinks it's annoying

= So according to Matt Hotson in an interview they weren't sure how they were going to get away with this until Nico Leon suggested making the arrow an energy beam, because clear onscreen stabbing is okay as long as there's no blood. All that matters is KIMBERLY GETS TO MURDER!!!!!!!!!!!

= THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN AT THE CLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB

= and yes they both knew that Kim was pregnant rather than my prediction that she didn't find out until afterwards, which, surprisingly, makes me want to chew glass even more

= Funnily enough, even though the twist calls into question if Sylvia even has a daughter, this is still more thought given to Trini's opinion on her powers being passed on than Once and Always had lol
