still-military captain tav x civilian riley AU idea. bear with me

tav who has made a lot of enemies from his line of work—like, a lot. but that's a risk he's been taking for years now, had been taking even well before he had met and started dating riley, so unfortunately there isn't much he can do about it now—beyond making sure he really kills them the first time around, of course. and thankfully, thus far, it isn't an issue that has impeded on his personal life.

(though, maybe that's a cause of his and riley's home being so isolated, and their occasional trips and vacations always being taken somewhere just as obscure.)

unfortunately, however, eventually one of them does catch up.

he and riley are vacationing in middle-of-nowhere south america when tav is caught off guard and taken hostage by someone he'd apparently wronged. by association, subsequently, riley is also taken, though he manages to get away when a crony isn't paying attention. he knocks the crony down, wriggles out of rope bindings, and steals his gun—maybe he isn't military, but tav at least had the decency to teach him some defense.

but it's too late to retrieve tav, unless riley wants them both killed. so all he can do is shoot this one individual and make a run for it, crashing through the rainforest to get away.

riley would quickly learn that shooting a gun at someone is far different than shooting a target at a range. it's no surprise that a guilt would begin eating at him, but he had no choice. he has no choice, if he wants to rescue tav.

fast forward to the moment riley finally catches back up to his partner—he's now been through hell and back, battered and bruised not only from the harsh environment, but also from having encountered far more bad guys than he had anticipated. he's killed several men, by this time.

tav, even worse for wear and only half-conscious sees riley haloed by golden light as he finally approaches, and almost doesn't believe he's really there. his riley, who has never seen a day of real-life warfare in his life, standing here coated with dirt and blood and housing an animalistic look in his eyes. but it is him—tav's saviour.

thankfully their escape is much easier than anticipated, and tav has never been so happy to see civilization once they make it out of the forest.

tav knows he'll want to ask riley all about it at some point, but he'd at least wait until they were truly safe to do so—and until that feral glint subsides from riley's gaze.

People I'm re-watching Max Steel and season one Forge is making me LIVID.

Kudos to the writers for giving him new ways to avoid questions every episode but I am so close to yelling at him through my screen. Who am I kidding, I already have.

JUST GIVE THEM SOME DAMN ANSWERS FORGE! Re-watching is so much more frustrating becuase this man is standing there acting like he's not hiding Max's entire IDENTITY and SPECIES from him.

Side note: It's a really, really smart and unique way for the writers to justify Max and Steel's recklessness and rebellion against N-Tek. Their actions are a reasonable leap of logic because they deserve answers. They're also inexperienced, and so their searches don't go well.

Side Side note: Am I also the only one confused as to why Max calls Forge "Uncle Ferrus" if Ferrus is his last name? I've never heard anyone do that, especially because it's not like he knows any other uncles, so I don't know why the writers didn't go with Uncle Forge. I've only ever heard people use first names or a separate title that means uncle.

Tomb raider 2013: Sam is so important to Lara that her entire motivation for much of the game is saving her. Lara will go through hell and back, to the point that she'll forever be changed as a person, all for Sam's sake. She will tear this entire island apart, along with everyone on it, if it means Sam is safe once again

as true as the jokes about “everyone wants to rewrite ninjago” are i feel like smthn people forget when complaining about the inconsistencies of the show is that…. it wasn’t planned? it’s not like most other animated shows lately - it didn’t start with a deeply fleshed out world or a meticulously designed pitch bible with grandiose plans for a long-term story or character arcs. the ninja don’t originally get their powers from heredity because they weren’t hereditary powers yet. the magic system doesn’t make sense bc they literally just made it up as they went! they go back and forth on stuff like whether non-elementals can learn spinjitzu bc it’s a collaborative piece of media made by people with vastly different levels of control over the story, the animation, the sets, etc. that varied over the course of the series. it’s totally understandable and exciting to see so many people reworking the early stuff with the lore and logic later seasons introduced but i personally feel that… if you’re doing that. you need to understand why the show is like that instead of writing it off as being bad and shitty. it was working with what it had. it’s only what it is now because of that awkward troubleshooting phase, not in spite of it

I forget how early on the show starts showing, to the us and Max and Steel, that not everything Ferrus does or says can be entirely trusted, simply because it's not the whole truth.

It starts in episode 7 or 8, which makes sense considering there's only 26 episodes and they need to spread out the whole turbo star thing over the last half of the season, which relies on those two not trusting anyone and sneaking around to find the answers themselves, but it really shows how Ferrus is reluctant to trust a 16 year old and his robot friend even after barely working with them. Though that might also give him more incentive to lie, because who knows what they'll do with the information, right?

He also punishes them for trying to find out what he's hiding by giving them more training, as seen at the end of the episode 'Uncle Sam Wants You!', which is weird to me. He could have gone about making their next training session harder without telling them, but then they wouldn't know its for breaking a rule, a rule set purely to limit what they know so that they become more subservient. A rule put in place because Ferrus doesn't trust Steel enough to believe him when he says that he won't hurt his host, and more importantly friend, on purpose. A rule put in place because he doesn't have faith in Max to try and stop Steel from 'going bad' even after he sacrifices himself, his relationships with people and his grades to do good and be a hero. He thinks they could betray him, and so he lies to Max and Steel.

Steel being someone Forge worked with in the past for years, who kept one of his best friends and closest allies protected against everything. Max being his nephew, a blood relative, that grew up with Molly and Forge, thus causing Max to see him as a father figure, rather than his actual dad who was never present. He has a long history with both of them, and yet he doesn't trust them enough to tell them what they are, who they are.

one detail that i find neat about max’s room is that it’s filled with x-treme sports stuff (gear, posters, trophies) and one very expensive telescope. seriously, look at the size of that barrel.

its the only astronomy thing in his room (and the whole apartment tbh) and it is so important to him that not only does he keep it between moves, not only does he set it up before he’s even finished unpacking, but unlike everything else, its always by the window.

and the show does nothing with it??? someone please correct me if im wrong bc srsly what the fuck. in a sci-fi show about aliens, including one that has scenes establishing that he actively goes to the roof to stargaze, the telescope in the mc’s bedroom is never mentioned? like im not asking for much, just a scene of it in use or max commenting that it used to be his dad’s (bc jim 100% owned a telescope) and even though max never really got into stargazing all that much, he keeps it nearby bc it makes him feel connected to his dad.

or yknow, let him have this interest and reference it in the show without using the scope. ie max takes a moment to appreciate the night sky at literally any point when he’s away from copper canyon’s light pollution (up to and including one of the times they’re in space), or max and steel are speculating where steel/ultralinks come from, and max mentions/points in the genral direcrion of exoplanets

and, like, the show does this with the sports stuff. the skateboard’s a p perfect example, bc it also got to be in the room before the unpacking was finished, but we see max frequently using it, we see it getting moved about his bedroom bc he doesnt have a specific spot for it aside from generally at the foot of his bed, he connects to other characters over skateboarding.

or even the snowboard. it also goes unused, but its presence establishes that max is actively into and participated in more xtreme sports than skateboarding. it’s also a reminder that max isn’t from copper canyon, since here he is w this nice snowboard sandwiched btwn the coast and a mesa. (it’s also a reference to the 2000s max steel but shh)

tldr: most of the stuff in max’s room is p obviously related to his interests and then there’s this mysterious telescope that i go feral over every time i see it.
