I'm so intrigued by the Din x Sabine ship, please tell me everything about them. How did you land on this, and why is it actually a vibe?

Someone actually asking me about my favourite rare pair??!? Is this real life?!

Alright, essay incoming.

First up: some context.

I started watching The Mandalorian while season 2 was airing (so circa late 2020). Fell hard in love with Mandalorians and had to go digging through the wiki for direction to what other Star Wars media featured the loveable tin cans (because I knew the movies centred around the Jedi but there were plenty of cartoons and comics to check out).

I was bummed there was no other material with Din Djarin (somehow I missed the memo he was a character created solely for the SW live action show debut). But as my sister and I were going through the wiki and unearthing all the gems about Mandalorians (like their own super-cool language, their long history with Jedi, and their various factions), we came to the stuff about the Darksaber (which we had only just seen in the finale when Din won it from Gideon). We thought, oh cool! It shows up in some other stuff, like the Clone Wars and that other colourful Star Wars cartoon we used to see ads for on Disney Channel!

Diving down that rabbit hole, the name Sabine Wren kept coming up. Like, a lot. Go to her page and it’s like a full-length novel—apparently, she’s had more screentime than Din. Skimming through her story—Imperial cadet, made a devastating weapon that actually targeted beskar, left and joined the rebellion, found the Darksaber and trained with it, last seen leaving to go find Ezra (wait, who’s Ezra?)—got me so intrigued.

(Also around this time started seeing some fanart of Din meeting Sabine, which was so cute and funny because she’s this walking rainbow and he’s greyscale incarnate but still didn’t know much about her character. And because we had finished The Mandalorian series, I dove into the fics and came across this Mando/Rebels crossover by DistantStorm which was my first real introduction to the Ghost Crew. Sabine wasn’t much in it, however, it was more focussed on Din and Grogu teaming up with Hera and Jacen.)

We figured out the timeline and started with the Clone Wars episodes about the Mandalorians and the Darksaber. There were not enough, in my opinion, but we learned the Darksaber is a Big DealTM (and that Clone Wars is… much darker than The Mandalorian), and then went into the Rebels series.

We. Were. Hooked.

We came for Sabine and the Mandalorians, we stayed for the Ghost Crew and Lothal. The story was just so wonderful and we fell in love with the whole crew (Ezra is my sister’s favourite).

Figured out pretty quickly that, besides Kanan and Hera, Sabine and Ezra were the biggest main ship of the series. I liked it, too; my interpretation was that they weren’t quite romantically involved by the end of the series, but that it would most likely pick up and go there once they reunited.

While we were still watching Rebels, I started writing a little fix-it fic for The Mandalorian (I didn’t want Grogu to go with Luke, I didn’t even want the Skywalker nonsense to touch the series, so I dialled it back to them meeting Ahsoka and everything going pretty much the same except she doesn’t send them to Tython but, rather, speaks on Grogu’s behalf and lets Din know that he wishes to stay with him).

It… got a little out of hand…

What was meant to be a short story ending with Din adopting Grogu, spiralled into a longer story because I couldn’t ignore the fact that they would still have that tracker on the Razor Crest and Gideon would still be after them. I was also now quite enamoured with the Darksaber lore and I still wanted Din to get it, so I wrote on, not quite yet sure where to go.

Then I thought, hey, Rebels ends a very neat decade before The Mandalorian’s beginning. We don’t have anything more about that story, but we saw Sabine leaving with Ahsoka to go find Ezra. And everyone seems to believe Ahsoka was trying to find clues to lead her to Ezra in The Mandalorian, so what if…?

Long story short, I ended up writing a crossover because I wanted Din and Grogu’s story to continue and I wanted the Ghost Crew to find Ezra.

Sabine was twenty at the end of Rebels, so by now she’s thirty. We saw her hanging around that comm tower on Lothal in the Rebels epilogue, so maybe she lives there now? Would make sense. And Din was asking around for a Mandalorian at the start of season 2, and he hadn’t yet found his way to his tribe, so maybe he’d go back to that quest now that he’s adopted Grogu and no longer looking for a Jedi. What if someone points him to the resident Mandalorian on Lothal?

From there, it kinda just took off on its own.

And here’s the thing: Din and Sabine are very different, but they’re also very similar.

Their backgrounds, their personalities and goals are different on the surface and in some points, but underneath that, they’re strikingly similar.

Din is a foundling and Sabine is Mandalorian by blood. His tribe is very strict about how they wear the armour, hers is not. But they both hold fast to and cherish their Mandalorian heritage. They’re both raised as capable, creative fighters. Din values his armour highly, as does Sabine; Din cares deeply for the tribe, Sabine cares deeply for her clan; Din works hard for and protects the covert, Sabine strives to do what’s best for Mandalore.

They are both introverted characters, though it may not seem so at first as Sabine can be very expressive and easygoing while Din is notably quiet, reserved, and is rather economical with his speech. But Sabine tends to keep to herself (as Ezra points out, she often goes off to her room to be alone and even eats alone aboard the Ghost). Din, too, is quite solitary, both by nature and design—he seems a separate entity from the tribe, though he is undeniably a part of them, and while he does make a number of friends throughout his adventures, he always maintains a distance that’s not strictly due to his helmet rule.

They are both extremely family-oriented. In Din’s case, we see this specifically with his relationship with Grogu and in the Sanctuary episode where we see that, while he doesn’t feel he can have it, he does long for a peaceful family life; with Sabine, we see it in her relationships with the Ghost Crew and her regard for her Mandalorian family. (Most notably, Sabine, in the very first episode of Rebels, describes the Spectres as a family; she’s also the first one to join Ezra on his mission to rescue Kanan; she’s out for blood when Hera gets hurt.)

The Darksaber gives us some of the most fascinating insights into their respective characters. Both of them struggle with wielding it at first despite being capable warriors, neither of them seek the throne attached to it (even though they would both be the best rulers given the leadership qualities they refine in their respective stories and their ability to bring people—even enemies—together), and, dang it, they both looked so cool with it.

In writing them and their interactions, I quickly found they mesh well.

One of the biggest things about Din’s story is that he learns there are other kinds of Mandalorians and he struggles to accept that fact. A notable point in Sabine’s story is her bringing the Mandalorians together. She would be respectful of his beliefs and that would disarm him as his vast experience in the galaxy has been people mocking him (even, unfortunately, some of those other Mandalorians he meets). Her respect would earn his respect and he would be more inclined to speak with and help her. Having lived with and trained with not one but two of the best ever Jedi, Sabine could provide helpful tips about Grogu and, while not a Jedi herself, could probably share some of what she learned.

And, being as they would meet in a post-Purge time, I imagine Din and Sabine would be a great comfort to each other. They both lost much in the Purge, but Sabine, I dare say, lost the most (even before the Ahsoka show confirmed it, I figured the Wren Clan hadn’t made it; Din, in a way, was spared such heartache because he was already alone).

I have seen some say Din wouldn’t like Sabine’s painting every surface in sight (including her hair) but while he may not wear much colour himself, he never once voices any kind of aversion to artistic expression. He is the way he is largely by necessity: work is getting harder and harder to come by and paying less, he can barely keep his ship running; he can’t spare credits that the tribe desperately needs on paint. But his old armour was red, and there’s a high chance he chose that colour himself (both as red was the colour his birth family was wearing when last he saw them and red means honouring parents in Mandalorian culture). He might think Sabine is unwise to wear such bright colour because it will interfere with keeping a low profile, but he wouldn’t necessarily find it distasteful, and all the symbols she paints and wears he would approve of—they’re her signets, after all.

The more I wrote, the more I saw potential for a ship.

Because—and this is the important part—I did not start out with that intention. I just thought it would be cool for them to meet and interact (and I didn’t think canon was ever gonna give it to us).

Like I said, I figured Sabine and Ezra would ultimately end up together. But, because I didn’t read it as they were romantically involved by the time of their separation, Sabine would be looking to reunite with a friend and someone she sees as family, not a lover. That’s a key point.

And while I don’t believe everyone absolutely needs to be paired off or everyone needs a romance, I did think Din, ultimately, could do well with a partner.

He and Omera (the widow on Sorgan) clearly had an attraction that was not one-sided, he admitted a life in the village was something he wanted, and he never denied Cara’s insinuations that he liked the idea of settling down with Omera. But the thing about the Din and Omera pairing is that it is meant to be a little doomed: to stay, he would have to give up the armour because the village is peaceful and to keep it would always keep him a little separate from the ; but for Omera to go with him would be to uproot her and her daughter from their peaceful life and plunge them into his dangerous world—while Omera could handle it (it seems she must’ve lived somewhere other than Sorgan because why else would she be the only one in the village who knew how to use firearms?) Winta has only known Sorgan and she’s a very gentle soul. So either option would mean a great sacrifice, and I’m not saying it can’t work, but it would be tragic, either way.

But with Sabine, Din would never be asked to compromise as she would respect his ways; at the same time, seeing a Mandalorian with a different view of the armour while still being honourable might help to soften Din and open his perspective (not to the point he gives up his helmet rule because of her, but rather, should it happen, he wouldn’t view removing the helmet as such a crime).

Sabine is also a very mature character, right from her introduction in Rebels, and a quiet, more reflective partner like Din would suit her very well.

Mandalorian stuff aside, Din would be the quiet, grounding strength a battered, post-war Sabine could use and Sabine would be the passion and colour that would bring some life back to the utilitarian life Din has fallen into.

So, yeah.

Too long; didn’t read: Din and Sabine are very different, but very much the same where it counts, and those differences and similarities would work really well together.

And I just think they’re neat.

Let's say there was a Httyd x Star Wars crossover. Would you read it? What would your thoughts be on it?

It would honestly depend on which characters it uses, and what the time period is if we’re using the Star Wars settings. I’m currently really into The Bad Batch, and also love Rebels. I like the prequels, originals, and sequels. (Well, most of it.) I do not want to touch the live action shows even with a big pole. So, again, not really sure what the setting would be, but I feel like it could be interesting.

Fishlegs would make a good Jedi, I think. Everyone draws or writes Hiccup as the Jedi, from what I’ve seen, but his friends being Jedi as well could be super interesting.

I’d probably read out of sheer curiosity at first. I do really love both franchises.

2. Summarize this au in 5 sentences.

Psmith Star Wars AU: Mike Jackson is a cadet at an Outer Rim Imperial Academy whose dreams of flying an X-Wing for the Empire shatter when he learns of the Empire's atrocities. When his brother defects to the Rebellion, Mike and some of his fellow cadets decide to leave the Academy and join the rebel cause. The boys are nearly captured during their escape attempt, but they're saved by Mike's eccentric roommate, Psmith, who turns out to be a former Jedi youngling who's been hiding from the Empire. After they make their escape, Mike and his fellow cadets have to decide whether they can trust this sly, arrogant boy with these unnatural powers, and they need to find a way to find and help the Rebellion.

5. What is something you kept the same?

Lord Peter Wimsey Telepath AU: I've kept the setting and situations as close to the originals as possible. It's still 1930s England. Harriet's still accused of murdering her lover. Lord Peter's still an aristocrat. The only difference is that various superpowers are a known and accepted part of society, and Peter's ability to literally know Harriet's thoughts adds a whole new and more difficult dimension to the power imbalance between them.

9. Is there a scene you wish you could've included, but couldn't? Why?

Sherlock Holmes Pushing Daisies Crossover AU: I wish I could have figured out what the actual mystery was for the first snippet I wrote for this AU. Unfortunately, my mystery-writing skills don't extend that far.

10. Is there a character you wish you could've included, but couldn't? Why?

Queen's Thief AU of Psmith: It would be really fun to have Queen's Thief versions of Billy Windsor and Bat Jarvis, but I can't think of a great way to fit them into the story that I've outlined--as I've laid it out, Psmith takes Attolia's throne mostly through his cunning and convenient connections.

11. Is there any relationship that's different in this au than in the source material?

Supergirl "Kara raised by the Kents" AU: Since Kara's actually raised by the Kents in this AU, she's got a much deeper and more complicated relationship with them. Her relationship with Martha is rocky, because she sees Martha as competition for her role as Kal's primary caretaker. Taking care of Kal is the only purpose Kara has left in life, and it takes a lot for her to let other people into that relationship.

13. Write a lil snippet set in this verse.

From Powers and Prejudice:

"Lizzie, Jane's on TV!" Lydia shouted. Lizzie rushed into the living room, where her sisters were gathered around the set. Headlines blared BREAKING NEWS beneath live footage of a supervillain attack downtown. The Blur was already on the scene, speeding innocent victims away from danger. The Archer--outside of Pemberley--was even lending a hand. And among them in pink spandex was unmistakably-- "Jane?" Lizzie shouted. "What's she doing there?" Mom was so excited that sparks crackled around her hair. "She did so well the other night that I couldn't let the Blur fight this one alone. It was my duty to send Jane to help." Lizzie was horrified. That had been a skirmish, easily dealt with. This was turning into a battle. One of the criminals had some type of fire manipulation ability, and flames filled most of the screen. To see Jane among that-- "Are you nuts?" Lizzie shouted. "She could die out there!" Lydia rolled her eyes. "What are you so worried about? It's not like she can get hurt." Not externally. Jane's skin was invulnerable, and there was nothing that could overpower her strength. But her respiratory system was as delicate as anyone's, and there was a lot of smoke out there. Jane acquitted herself well, but eventually, Lizzie's fears were realized. Just as the last of the criminals was neutralized, Jane collapsed to the pavement. The Blur, in bright blue, was at her side in an instant. He checked over Jane and gathered her into his arms, a look of panic on his masked face. In less than a second, they disappeared from the scene. While her mother and sisters exclaimed over the scene--did you see the way he looked at her?--Lizzie headed toward the door. Mom asked, "Lizzie, where are you going?" "I don't know if you noticed, but your daughter is injured. I'm going to help her. "She's in the care of one of Netherfield's Defenders! She's perfectly safe." "I'll believe that when I see it." Kitty, fretful, said, "The Blur's so fast. They're miles away by now. Hidden away in his secret headquarters." Lizzie shrugged. "Then I'll find his secret headquarters." Ignoring their protests, she went out the door.

17. What important events have you 'translated' from canon to make sense into this au, if any?

Milo Murphy's Law Star Wars AU: Murphy's Law makes a lot of sense as an out-of-control connection to the Force. And I've turned Diogee into a droid (DO-G) because there don't seem to be many dogs in Star Wars.

18. Is there any theme or motif in this au that isn't in the original work?

Politically-realistic Princess Diaries 2 AU: There's a much stronger exploration of the theme of duty vs. love, because we have multiple characters who have dealt with this conflict. There's also a thread exploring religion, because Mia's priest uncle is a prominent character.

20. Share THREE headcanons! But about different characters.

American Hallmark Royal Romances:

The princess of California was a candidate for an arranged marriage with the crown prince of Maine until a Spunky Commoner came along and stole his heart. She was actually rather hurt by this, until it sparked her own romance story.

The Spunky Commoner met the crown prince of Maine while working on some artistic endeavor for his family. She was rather baffled by this whole royalty thing, until her relationship with the prince provided some cultural background.

Sam, the crown prince of Texas, is a bit ashamed of his nation and especially the over-the-top Texas-ness of his father. He's an excellent code-switcher, and has a bit of trouble straddling the cultural expectations of Texas and the outside world.

21. What makes you most excited about this fic?

Lord Peter Wimsey Star Wars AU: What's there not to get excited about? The Scarlet-Pimpernel-ness of Peter as a double agent within the Empire! The drama of Peter dealing with Force-visions of the future. Force-sensitive Dowager Duchess. Peter having Thrawn as both an art-and-culture buddy and an increasingly-suspicious-of-him nemesis. He's just such a fun character to throw into the structure of this universe.

24. Ramble about something you haven't gotten to talk about yet.

Blackberry Bushes Superhero AU: It says to ramble, so I'll ramble. First off, I feel guilty even claiming this an an AU, since this was really your idea and I just added some stuff to it. But it's such a fun concept and it comes to mind as an AU quite a bit because there are so many fun ways this story warps the typical superhero plots. The Superman character marries a former villain who has good reason to fear him and be suspicious of his fellow heroes. The former supervillain dictatorship is undergoing reform, and it's a legitimate thing, and we get to see the politics of that and see the ruler's children growing up in this system. Delclis' father used to be one of the great heroes, but his memory is tarnished because of the collateral damage his extreme powers caused, and now Declis has to deal with getting the same powers. Antavia's plotline of walking away from the throne become her walking away from her superpowers and inadvertently leading to the creation of her best friend's most dangerous nemeses. They're stories you couldn't come up with under the usual superhero tropes, but combining it with this very different type of story creates new and interesting angles that wouldn't ordinarily come to mind, and that's so fun.

I'm really glad that you've enjoyed the way I've melded McDanno with various fandoms. I've found that I've really enjoyed the stories I've done. I'm still working on organizing my time so I can write more lol.

Other fandoms for H50...I'm heavily invested in Fantasy and Sci-fi AU's for H50/McDanno as they seem to mesh with those genre's so well. I'd love to see some Star Trek and Star War's AUs with H50/McDanno. I love both of these franchises, but I personally, don't know enough about the universes to make such an AU feel authentic. At least in my mind lol. I love the idea of star crossed Jedi!Danny and Jedi!Steve. Or Jedi!Steve and Rebel!Danny.

With Trek I like the idea of Danny and Steve on a starship. I don't want either of them as Captain though and I'm not sure where/who I want them to be.

I also kinda like the idea of H50 crossing over with Lilo and Stitch. Maybe Steve ending up with an Experiment of his own lol.

It's not a fandom, exactly, but I like the idea of Magical Realism McDanno AU's or Historical Fantasy Au's.

I have often given Qui-Gon Jinn a hard time because he’s so often used in STAR WARS fandom as a weapon to beat on other characters I love and it makes it difficult to like him, as well as it overshadows who the character himself is. So, to help balance that out some, I wanted to do a set of recs to remind myself–and just share some happiness in!–that I actually do very much like Qui-Gon! He’s a good person who really loved the people around him, he cared very deeply, he had an amazing friendship with Yoda (seriously, that Yoda’s the one he reaches out to when he becomes a Force Ghost, that even after death, Qui-Gon loves his Jedi family, it gives me feelings in my feelings place every single time), and one of my favorite things about Master & Apprentice is that I often got the impression that he knew he was kind of obnoxious sometimes, but he was at peace with it, he was fine with that. 366,990, yikes!

3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

Uhm...let’s count. Star Trek: The Next Generation when I was 10 (and I have another one for that fandom in the works). X-men in middle school. Xena: Warrior Princess, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Star Wars (Original Trilogy stuff), Star Wars: Rebels, and Castlevania. That’s seven, I guess? 

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Predictably:  Close Only Counts (600) (earlyish kanera) En Route (541) (Han/Leia)  Next Season (503) (Hera-centric, post-Rebels) Lean (407) (Ghost crew)  Continued (297) (Rebels fix-it fic) 

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

The only reason I write is to talk about these fandoms with people, so yes, and I am not above begging for comments (that was the question, right?). If I haven’t responded to yours it’s because I’ve overlooked it in the day-to-day, and you should poke me and tell me so! 

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Probably The First Night, which was written in the aftermath of “Jedi Night,” before the series even ended. Most of my stories have plenty of angst in the middle, but little at the end. 

7. Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I have not written crossovers. Hyperfixation does not allow me to think of more than one fandom at the same time. 

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

No, which I take as a testament to how lovely the Rebels fandom is. 

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Ahahaha! I mean...in my defense... not ALL my stories are smut. 

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Nope.

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I don’t think so. Guys? No, right? 

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not for A03, but the childhood fanfics were ALL co-written. We had these spiral notebooks we’d carry around and pass off to each other in the halls between classes. Ah, middle school. I also lived that roleplaying life for many years, though I’m not counting those as stories. 

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

kanera, oh you came and you gave without taking...  Runners-up:  Trevor and Sypha (Castlevania)  John and Aeryn (Farscape) (though I don’t write them because I’m not sure fanfiction can improve upon the show, which is already...pretty much fanfiction)

14. What’s a wip that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Uhm... I think I will finish all of my works in progress eventually, barring unforeseen disaster. None of them feels abandoned. I would most like to get working on Fault Lines (the big Castlevania fic that’s barely started), and I have a gorgeous Picard story that I wrote 4,000 words for in three hours and then haven’t had a chance to go back to again. 

15. What are your writing strengths?

characterization and dialogue, I think. Probably smut? I’m not sure that’s something to brag about. 

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot? What plot? Also pacing/phrasing at the sentence level, which is sometimes okay but sometimes wonky. 

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I say if it feels good, do it. 

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Probably Star Trek: The Next Generation, in terms of things that I actually wrote down. 

19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

I don’t knooooow! Uhm...  Next Season is not my best writing (it was written at breakneck speed and needs a heavy edit), but it really hits the spot sometimes. Feels real. (Side note, after I dedicated a story to my husband to troll him one time, my son said, “Hey! Would you ever write a story for me?” and my husband told him, “Buddy, Mommy wrote 40,000 words for you.” He doesn’t get to SEE this story, of course.) We also lost multiple men in our family to suicide, unexpectedly and horrifically, just before I wrote this story. It exploded everybody’s sense of reality in some ways I don’t think we’ll ever recover from. So...there’s a lot of real energy in this one.  I think Scenes from Yavin IV is underrated.  Fade to Red is smutty garbage in a lot of ways, but it’s been a huge investment, and it’s really made me think about how and why relationships work--and writing Kanan and Hera at the same time as Trevor and Sypha has made it clear that there are REALLY DIFFERENT ways of having healthy relationships, so that’s cool. Fade to Red has been a massive amount of work for a modest achievement, and I both resent it and am attached to it for that reason. It will end in a 8,000 word blowout next week, and I think I’ll be sad to see it done.  I think Mastery’s doing some interesting things, though it’s a bit retconned now.
