I think we don't talk enough about the implications of Val Velocity's main color being white. So I'm writing a short essay about it.
About Val Velocity's character design
I need to start this off with a brief rundown of the narrative of Danger Days. Danger Days is centered around themes of self expression, anti-conformism and anti-corporation. The killjoys are rebels who are fighting BL/ind, an evil company that seeks to control every aspect of an individuals' life. The Killjoys fight with their appearance just as much as they do with guns. They use their flamboyant, eccentric and colorful clothing as a way to challenge the sanitized, conformist society that BL/ind is promoting. The mask, which in other media is typically used to indicate hiding one's true self, in the context of Danger Days takes the opposite meaning: the Killjoys' customized masks are the ultimate tool of self-expression. Each member of the Fabulous Four, the original gang of Killjoys, has a color distinctive to them, which matches the color of their gun.
In the context of Danger Days, whites and greys are used to symbolize lack of identity and conformism. This is evident if we compare the original Killjoys to BL/ind agents.

Now we get to Val Velocity as a character. His story takes place several years after the Fabulous Four, have been killed. Val is the leader of a group called the Ultra Vs, and he's trying to continue the legacy of the Fabulous Four. We learn that he particularly looks up to their leader, Party Poison. This is reinforced by the fact that his own gun is yellow just like theirs. However, Val is fundamentally different than the former Killjoys. He's arrogant, and he fights because he craves violence and glory, rather than to actually stand up for what is right.
His design and attitude conveys this quite well in my opinion:

His palette is almost completely monochromatic. Hell, if he was placed amongst the BL/ind henchmen instead of the Killjoys in the pic below I wouldn't even bat an eye.

Val does not understand what the Fabulous Four standed for. He's not fighting BL/ind to protect people, or for the sake of freedom of self expression, or to fight conformism. In fact, Val's own sense of identity is shaky, as he's trying to follow the footsteps of someone else. Most of his identity revolves around trying to emulate Poison: even his own gun, which is almost as important as the mask to a Killjoy, is the same color as theirs. And the gun, something he has assimilated from someone else's identity, is one of the few things differentiating him from the BL/ind agents as far as color schemes go.
Val is not fighting for ideals, he's fighting because he craves violence. We see him hurting others with no remorse, often deliberately harming those who are weaker than him for the sake of it. In which way is his violence any better than BL/ind's?
The necklace with vampire fangs, arguably his most iconic design element, also plays into this. The Killjoys are fighting the Dracs, BL/ind agents who wear a mask with vampire fangs. In the context of Danger Days, his necklace is an open threat to the Dracs. His most prominent design element is a symbol of violence.
His palette being mostly white, in an universe where color is a synonym of resistence and self expression, is very telling. One would naturally assume that if he were to add color to his appearance during the story, it would be a sign of character growth. But the ttlotfk comics subvert that expectation, because when that moment comes it has exactly the opposite meaning:

Val, after spiraling into paranoia and mania, dyes his hair "Poison red" in an attempt to appropriate Poison's legacy. This is the ultimate act of lack of self identity. The first time Val has tried to add color to his appearance, what should have been an act of self-expression, is him attempting to "take" someone else's color. But he cannot be Poison, or overshadow his legacy. Val is only a caricature of who Poison was: aside from the gun, and the bright red hair, he has nothing in common with them. He doesn't have the morals, nor he fights for the same ideals.
I think Val, as a character, is meant to be a testament to how in every rebellion there will be people looking for an outlet for violence rather than fighting for a right cause.

I attempted to color the Kallus drawing! Kind of apart of the Rebels discord server palette challenge, I did end up layering the original drawing on top of the painting tho. I also kinda hate how it turned out but my brother says I’ve just been looking at it for too long (-^-).
UPDATE: I fixed some stuff!

One again, Pixar has come out with something that is enjoyable for kids and adults of all ages. We explore the galaxy as Elio discovers how to find the balance between his true self and finding his place on Earth. While I agree that this film is visually stunning to look at and at times made me laugh, I don’t agree when critics say in advertisements that “it’s the best film since Coco.”
A positive aspect of this film is the animation. Everything from the setting of Elio, from Earth to space feels polished and clear. It allowed me to be on the journey with Elio and Glordon, who are trying to find that balance of expressing themselves well also trying to please there parents (In Elio’s case, his aunt and Glordon’s dad, Lord Grigon). Despite the expectations and confines that they are challenged with, they still rebel against it and find solace in each other. The way each and every character is polished and expressed with multiple color palettes with the realistic colors (e.g. dark green and bright blue skies. Space has more translucent and brighter colors in each and every detail in the aliens and darker colors to resemble Grigon, the ‘villain’ in this story). Every color design and detail in the characters and scenery has a purpose and Pixar, for me has always done a great job of trying to go outside the box and dive deeper into the world of animation. If you haven’t seen the movie, won’t give much away, however the ending scene is perfect and breathtaking so please see it for the animation.
There was one scene that took me by surprise but intrigued at how the familial dynamics worked in not only in the movie, but in real life. A big spoiler ahead so heads up if you don’t want to get spoiled, I would skip this part. Cloning is a big critical part in this film and both Glordon and Elio clone themselves so they could do the things their guardians want them to do while also be free to live the life they want. It’s so easy to not be understood and it’s better to run away. However, if you run away from the rough times and don’t stick it out, then you can’t wait to see if it gets better. For people that care, they want what’s best for the people they love, however if you try to change everything about them, then you lose the best parts of them. One part that was interesting was that Olga Solis, Elio’s aunt wasn’t able to figure out that she had an alien clone in her home right away, Lord Grigon (the ‘villain’ of the film) instantly was able to tell that the alien clone wasn’t his son. This part took me by surprise because despite not always understanding his son, Glordon, this one act of destroying the clone shocked me but the delivery of Garrett’s “that’s not my son had me in chills. The way that Grigon was able to deliver this line through the mixture of anger and fear allowed this character to be fleshed out more instead of becoming a one-dimensional villain who will never accept his son, instead gave us a villain that loved his son enough to know the difference between his son and a clone. Meanwhile, Elio's aunt isn't able to tell the difference in weeks until overtime realizes that the mannerisms of Elio aren't exactly something he would normally do and in by finding out what's going on with 'Elio', she starts to become obsessed and slowly begins to miss the best parts of him that she didn't appreciate before. Both parents have different reactions but its there realizations that caught me off guard while watching this movie and something that would resonate with any parent.
However, what doesn't make this movie stand out from other Pixar movies is the humor and the storytelling. While it was a cute story about trying to find your place in the world, it did feel somewhat lackluster with some of the characters and humors. Sure, there were parts that did surprise me but the story of trying to find your place has been done before and wish there was some elevation to the way they told that story. The most standout character for me was Glordon and Lord Grigon. We see the childlike innocence of Glordon and trying to find a different path from what’s expected of him while Grigon is on the warpath trying to become an ambassador of the Communiverse were entertaining. Over the course, we see Glordon have more confidence to express his feelings towards his dad, while we see Grigon lower his temper and start to embrace his son for who he is. Those, in my opinion were the characters that really stood out for me.
Also, this is a personal thing, we didn’t need a bully in this film. I understand things happen in life when it comes to bullying but how Pixar portrayed this bully, it was very streotypical in his only motivation was to get even at Elio for getting them in trouble with the Air Force, while Bryce, his friend is mean to him at first but slowly realizes that they have more in common then they don’t and he does apologize for his friend’s actions which was commendable but not necessary to the story.
Another thing I believe where the film fell a little for me was the humor. In other words Pixar movies, there’s humor and jokes that everyone can enjoy and feel natural to the worldbuilding and characters. However, in this case a lot of the humor felt forced (with some exceptions). I couldn’t really relate to the humor and at times couldn’t get a lot of emotion and layers to the film, which I usually am able to receive in a Pixar movie.
One last thing, which isn’t on the movie is the marketing. I don’t know if every poster is the same, however when I went, my theater came with a poster and when I recieved it, I was excited (mainly because it was free) however, there was a live action Stitch on it. Turning it over, I discovered it was a two for one poster where the back showed promotion for the live action LILO and Stitch. While I don’t have anything against the live action LILO and Stitch, I wish that Elio got as much if not more promotion for their movie like LILO and Stitch did. It didn’t feel like Elio got the spotlight in the poster and the marketing was flat for me, however I don’t know if every single poster is like this so don’t take my word for it.
Overall, the movie was enjoyable however, not the best film to come out of Pixar. If you all are curious, my top three Pixar movies are
1. WALL-E
2. Elemental
3. Inside Out 2

Why Aki and angel are my favorite doomed love
I haven’t read chainsaw man in like two years but even with my poor recollection Aki and Angel had an everlasting impact on me. Its contrasting and ambiguous and is the most intimate thing I’ve ever seen in my LIFE. The og yearners. However I’m not super interested in escalating the romantic aspect. It’s rootless and fleeting and I think that is absolutely perfect.
They challenge each others values but not in a contradictory sense, it’s kind of a grey area. There’s a big visual aspect to this. Aki having a dark, cool toned muted color palette makes him appear reserved and harmonious. He’s driven by very human emotional burdens, something Angel has only a loose concept for. Angel appears in lighter colors but not overwhelmingly such. It’s similarly neutral and consistent but feels less threatening, especially taking his androgynous look into consideration. His body language is not disciplined like Aki. Angel is lacking urgency and has a more inattentive, numbing aura.
Together they both appear withdrawn but grounded, working together very casually with little dialogue but it’s a comfortable silence. It’s not hesitant but rather a mutual understanding. They aren’t reflecting the chaos surrounding them, it’s as if none of it is even there.
Now this is the part where I start to forget important details but I’m going to do my best. Their relationship becomes strained by their values as time goes by. Angel grows more damaged by his situation and feels the weight of what he’s done, deciding he doesn’t care if he dies. Aki feels a growing need to conserve the relationships he has and chooses the vulnerability of connection to do so. He grabs Angel, sacrificing some of his own lifespan without hesitation to save him. He tells Angel he doesn’t want to see people die anymore. This puts worth in Angels life, something Angel did not bother himself with. It’s throwing them both in a vulnerable moment, challenging what they were comfortable with wanting.
I could literally eat my phone right now THIS TENSION WILL NEVER BE RECREATED OH MY LORDD. Ok I say that but I was going to bring up a point of how their dynamic means something to me because this is a common trope taken for a completely different spin. It’s not at all new to have an angelic man attract a human man especially in anime I mean hell I was obsessed with evangelion and chainsaw man at the same time TRUST ME I know. Both of them depict an emotionally burdened human being enticed by an angelic figure but Aki and Angel don’t develop into anything they just coexist in this feeling. It has no impact on their fate. THEIR LOVE EXISTS WITHOUT PURPOSE. That’s why it sticks with me. Their relationship pulls you in and gives you tunnel vision in a situation where this trope doesn’t change a thing because it was never meant to. Now this trope is famously doomed, I’m not saying everyone else got what they wanted my point is it was never about saving each other in the first place, nothing about how they felt was rebelling against anything but themselves. I mean for gods sake they are side characters lord kill me I think they are genius
Oh and one last thing…Angel devil and shinji have the same dub va. It’s not related to anything it’s just funny as hell
