This fish! This fish!

This fish is why my blog has the name it does! Rebellatrix! The swift cruiser of the ocean! Coelacanths are supposed to drift and lunge at food when it passes by. Rebellatix doesn’t do what a coelacanth is supposed to do! Literally a coelacanth gone rogue!

I love that I finally got to see recognition for it! This just made my day!

He had trawled his river a thousand times before, caught about every fish imaginable, divvied out to the hungry community but no family. He had no family, nobody able to

stand his foetid flesh, so lived lonely

and yearning except He had his seaweed green eyes. Slimy and deep like a wasted catch, like they were always meant to reflect the water. He had cast his line but this time his fish hook caught and pulled him overboard.

He sank like a rock or an old witch trial and he had kept on sinking. On and In. Every time he thought I must I must be near the bottom now he just plunged further. He did not drown nor drink just looked around at the impossible depths the impossibly large and primordial fish the fish eyes with their silt sunken irises trawling over him and somehow inexplicably he knew all their names like an old nursery rhyme. Bonnerichthys Coelacanth Euthanerops Heliobatis Megapiranha Rebellatrix Lanarkia Palaeodus Titanichthys. The river was not could not be this deep. Surely it could not contain so much. It never once occurred to him to let go of that rod. As his clothes eroded away, it became the last evidence of land He had not always been coral. Medieval bones perfectly preserved by sand and current flocked familiarly favourably like a lost friend into his hair and mouths. Roman pottery penetrated his flesh leaving him coughing up damp terra cotta. The water got blacker and ever saltier he could not even see his crustaceous hands. He finally gave in and looked down-

-and saw the impossible reflection of himself, a cosmic horror smudged and blurred like a child’s first watercolour. Its visage shuddered in tide as it sat on his boat. Seemed to drip like it was melting. But then but then it looked down at him a look of fear and ancient understanding. It backed away as he drew ever nearer, breath fogging the seaglass his gills danced and flapped like a butterfly over a carcrash. His years-empty stomach echoing leviathan groans. It backed and backed away until it fell overboard.

And he broke the surface, gasping onto his creaking, weary boat. He reached his pickled prickled fingers up to touch his gills but only found blood and salt. He had searched for the source of the blood flow, and there he found a crusted fish hook embedded in his cheek. He had pulled the thing out and his crimson flow leaked into the river, drowning his ichthyic reflection like ink as the hungry fish plucked at the balls of clot. He had moored up and went home with just one catch.

There He had found a wife and family eager to greet him, with a hot meal awaiting him. She had unveiled a prehistoric thing with eyes of seaweed green. They had eaten well that night he had hung up and locked up his hookless rod, ignored the salt in his gums. And there Had he gone to bed happy and loved and dry.

We‘ve reached the Triassic period and with it the Mesozoic Era, the Age of Reptiles! Right now (about 250 million years ago), the reptiles are not dominating yet - in fact no one really was doing too well, as the Early Triassic was mostly a recovery period with low diversity after the most devastating mass extinction of all time, The Great Dying, at the end of the Permian.

The one exception to this is Lystrosaurus. The pig-sized herbivores somehow made it through the mass extinction mostly unscathed and in a now barren world they re-diversified, took up empty niches and became the most common vertebrate in many areas. It is not entirely clear why they survived. Maybe it was hibernation or burrowing that gave them some kind of protection from the worst parts of The Great Dying, maybe they were just lucky. Whatever it was, these prehistoric cockroaches marked one of the last big hurrahs of the synapsids (our own linage), before they went into hiding and lived their lifes as rodent size critters in the shadows of the reptiles for the following 200 million years or so.

The synapsids were the stars of the Permian, but only three groups of them made it into the Triassic: The carnivorous therocephalians and the herbivorous dicynodonts like Lystrosaurus with bulky bodies, mostly toothless beaks and tusk-like canines. They both went extinct during the Triassic. A third group, the cynodonts, survived much longer and will eventually include all modern mammals, from the tiniest bats to the biggest whales. But right now all of that is just some distant future.

Right now, at the beginning of the Triassic, a lot of other groups hurry to fill empty spaces. Several groups of reptiles decided that, after their ancestors once spent a lot of time and effort to evolve a terrestrial lifestyle, they want to return to the oceans. This included early cousins of the ichthyosaurs (those dolphin-shaped marine reptiles that lived alongside the dinosaurs) like Cartorhynchus and very basal sauropterygians. The most famous member of that group are the Loch-Ness-Monster-looking plesiosaurs, but one early member was the strange Atopodentatus. They possibly used their weird mouths to eat algae, making them one of the earliest herbivorous marine reptiles.

On land, the most interesting development might be the rise of the archosaurs and their close relatives. Over the span of the Mesozoic, the age of reptiles, they became the dominate group of life including many fan-favorites: The giant dinosaurs, the flying pterosaurs, the birds we have today and the wide variety of crocs, both past and present. At the beginning of the Triassic, they are just starting out, but 5 m long predators like the big-headed Erythrosuchus (although they are technically not quite archosaurs), already give a glimpse into their future.

Time and Place: 252 to 247 million years ago, from the Induan to the Olenekian of the Early Triassic.

Rebellatrix is only known from British Columbia.

Physical Description: Rebellatrix is a coelacanth like no other. Its body is a more elongate and slender than other coelacanths, and each fin (which, being a sarcopterygian, has a fleshy “limb” for the base) has a reduced rays. But its most distinctive feature is its tail. In living coelacanths, the caudal fin forms a broad, continuous shape. It is formed from three lobes: a large upper and lower lobe, and one tiny one in the middle at the tip of the tail. In Rebellatrix, however, the upper and lower lobes have greatly expanded, projecting far posteriorly and forming pointed shapes. This gives the tail a half-moon shape, similar to tuna or some sharks. The body was covered with ridged scales and bore a complex lateral line system. The head shape is unknown, but here we’ve restored it as pikelike based on its inferred ecology.

Diet: Rebellatrix was likely an active predator; its diet likely consisted of smaller fish.

Behavior: Rebellatrix was unique among coelacanths in being a fast-moving pursuit predator; the shape of the tail fin is similar to those of fast oceanic predators today. Also uniquely, the elements of the tail fin have fused. This would have led to a less flexible tail than modern coelacanths, who are lazier “lurk-and-lunge” predators that use every fin except the tail fin for most movement. Rebellatrix, by contrast, used its tail as the basis of sustained, rapid movement, and used the other fins to fine-tune its swimming.

Ecosystem: Rebellatrix was found in the Sulphur Mountain Formation of Canada. At the time, the area was a continental shelf. Based on how rare Rebellatrix is, it is likely that it lived in the open sea and only occasionally visited the area. In fact, few other species are known from the same localities, but these include the coelacanthimorph Belemnocerca and the ichthyosaur Utatsusaurus.

Other: Rebellatrix shows that, contrary to popular belief, coelacanths were not evolutionarily stagnant for over 300 million years - there was some evolutionary innovations along the line. And, along with Saurichthys, Rebellatrix represents other fish filling the “active pursuit predator” niche that was dominated by sharks before the Permian-Triassic Extinction.

Coelacanths are famous for being “living fossils”, completely disappearing from the fossil record at the end of the Cretaceous but then being rediscovered alive just 80 years ago. But although they’re often thought to have physically changed very little over the last 300 million years or so, more recent discoveries are starting to show that coelacanth body forms and lifestyles were actually more varied in the distant past.

Meet the wonderfully-named Rebellatrix divaricerca, from the Early Triassic of British Columbia, Canada (~251-247 mya). Measuring around 1.3m long (4′3″), its body shape and large symmetrical forked tail suggest it was adapted for fast swimming. Unlike its slow-moving deep-water modern relatives this coelacanth was a speedy oceanic active predator, convergently similar to tuna or some sharks.

Since it lived in the immediate wake of the end-Permian “Great Dying” mass extinction, Rebellatrix may have rapidly evolved from more standard-looking coelacanths to take advantage of a suddenly vacant ecological niche -- or it might be part of a more extensive unusual lineage whose other members simply haven’t been discovered yet.

Update Time: Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals In Mass Media

A while back, I did a post on my findings for Dinosaur Representation in Film.  Thanks to a project I’ve been aiding with, I’ve been able to greatly expand my media intact.  From what I could watch (excluding the Simpsons, because how the hell am I gonna ID prehistoric life that cartoony), here are the top 10 prehistoric animals of various groups I’ve been able to log until about March of this year. Youtube always puts out something new, so I had to cut off some things.  This covers Movies, TV Shows, Educational Shorts, Direct to Video productions, Youtube Channels, and Youtube videos (for not largely dedicated prehistoric channels/playlists).  This involved a lot of IDing I had to do myself.  So when a documentary showed a mural or sculpture, I did my best to either deduce or track down the thing so I could ID things properly.  Crystal Palace and Age of Reptiles showed up a LOT.   I even counted background skeletons for various museum shots when I could.  Because I was going ALL IN on this.  And things that used 60% stock footage were not counted to avoid repetition.  That said, footage from The Lost World (1925) got used a LOT, like, into the 21st century even!  As a final side note: SCREW Trilobites! They’re almost never IDed, and there are 40,000 of them!  Here is what I found out:

The wish has been made and everything is perfect. Her family is alive, her son got the girl and she's the guardian of the Miraculous box... She didn't account for Marinette's eldest son not only being venomously ageist his mother being an Agreste but also having the power to undo everything she's worked so hard for.
