It happened so fast that Kate almost brushed it off.
Riley had called. They had been so busy at university that Kate rarely got to talk to them outside of the few holiday celebrations she dragged herself to. She wanted her family safe, far away from Hameln's gaze. Still, it felt like a bleeding wound.
"I need to take this," she told the screen. Rebecca didn't visibly respond, but the silence was enough of a answer. She would wait. She had waited over a decade, what was a few minutes?
Riley had called wanting to double check something about library practices for a paper. Kate bit back any responses that had to do with the supernatural and answered their questions, soaking up their nibling's voice.
"Alright, Riley. I love you." She hung up the phone and turned back to the TV, jolting.
Rebecca was suddenly much closer. If she was any closer, her cheek would be pressing against the screen of the TV, her eyes wide. She opened her mouth and instead of Amanda's forced cheerfulness, Rebecca spoke. "Ri-?"
The screen flickered and Amanda was suddenly back to her spot, waiting for Kate's answer.
A thought wandered in.
"Do you remember them?" she asked as she chose the chickens. "Do you remember Riley holding that baby chick in their hands?" Amanda explained about the concept of families, pausing slightly at the sight of the rooster. "How much do you remember them? They missed you a lot, you know."
The lonely kitten meowed as Rebecca looked up, her eyes wide and mouth stretching into a grin.
That night, Kate sat down and drafted a letter.

i went insane rambling on the tags of this post about princess bubblegum and ran out of space so i copy pasted it here so i could finish writing. under read more bc idk
tbf i dont think i would say pb is like... Good. well actually. wait. im gonna go on a rant.
i think it depends on how we classify ''good''. what makes someone a good person? what makes someone evil? thoughts or actions‚ past or present‚ etc. i honestly dont think i can firmly say bubblegum is either good or evil. shes one of the few truly morally grey characters ive seen. like
no matter what you think makes someone good or bad she has most certainly been bad in every single way. and also good in every single way. hm.
. she is not a naturally empathetic person. thats not to say she doesnt care about people‚ she does‚ and sometimes those feelings influence her actions a Lot even if she doesnt realize it. but also‚ even when it comes to those she cares about‚ emotional empathy is a struggle. shes the definition of thoughts over feelings 100% scientific brain facts and logic. she is Very egoistical‚ she likes being in control and having power over people (not bc shes power hungry per se but bc thats the best way to keep control over others. shes Logical. and if she has control than nothing can go wrong)‚ she likes not being questioned and she did and still does often disregard other peoples rights and privacy to get what she wants and to be on top/have control over them. she does care‚ about a bunch of different things in a bunch of different ways‚ but caring about someone/multiple ppl and naturally feeling empathy are different things. she needs to make an effort to take other peoples feelings into consideration‚ and while not feeling empathy and etc obviously has absolutely NOTHING to do with morality‚ the thing about pb is that most of the time she does not make that effort‚ and actively does things that hurt other people for her own gain‚ or for Science™ or the Kingdom™. she doesn't care ab how other people feel or their privacy and she does like government crimes and mass murders and a surveillance state about it. she cares deeply about her people for example‚ but not really them as individuals‚ shown when she likes fucking kills them or put cameras on their bodies etc. shes more worried about them surviving than their autonomy. she cares about finn‚ but specially at the beginning she treats him more as an asset than anything‚ and does shit like implant a gps on him without him knowing. and while shes Always liked control and been all logical alpha brain and shit‚ and struggled with sympathy‚ she used to care a lot lot more. or better, she used to Allow herself to care and to love and to feel‚ she build herself a family because she felt lonely and she loved marceline deeply. but like the post and the show said she kept being hurt and she needed to protect an entire kingdom alone‚ which meant repressing all that to fucking hell and back. so she slowly just build up and let her ''no sympathy no feelings only Facts And Science'' side rule until she forgot anything else
and thats how we meet bubblegum in the show: manipulative and head of a dictatorship and with no one she truly cared about close to her, doing awful awful things and not taking time to remember about others. what are morals. being just so very fucked up

your thoughts and brain and whatever do not make you evil. your actions do. but her actions are terrible and she does the things she does bc sympathy and caring do not come naturally for her, but being waaay to super mega smart and wanting control Do and she has hardened and isolated herself enough that she has no one to like, pull her out of that. keep her in check. remind her to make an effort to consider other people.
in the show, we see her begin to try and be good again. by letting other people in, by letting herself feel, letting herself be a Person outside of being a Princess and a Ruler and a Scientist, she begins to make that effort again. and bc shes like a war criminal that comes not only in the form of apologizing for those who are or were close to her and she was awful too, but also destroying the surveillance system and stop spying on people. she tries to begin having good actions. she realizes what she had been doing, and feels guilty about it (for... probably the first time honestly. she was very indifferent about it before. everything she did was the most logical thing to do, after all.) i say shes still firmly morally grey tho bc while shes no longer like Evil, she still. goes back to spying on people and etc. shes still Like That, just toned down. all that show that while shes getting Better shes still not good, and probably will never be, because thats just how she is. crazy scientist manipulative pink candy princess. shes the best
she was also never truly evil tho bc even at her worse her actions were not to cause harm! Most Of The Time! and when they were to cause harm it wasnt just bc she was idk a sadist or something, it was with a goal (usually the neutral goal of Science or the good goal of protecting her people) in mind! Theyre still not excusable tho bc they did cause harm! a lot! to a bunch of different people! and like she does care a lot she loves marceline she loves finn she loves netty and she loved shoko but she just doesnt KNOW how to love people and all of those feelings are like behind a brick wall in her brain so she just tries to science everything out and it doesnt always work. like ARGH such a good character. such a good morally grey character. i ❤ bubblegum. i love watching the show and flinching at all the terrible shit she does and being like jesus christ bubblegum what the fuck

….so, it’s totally a coincidence and not at all a bad omen that my twelve-week appointment falls on the Ides of March? Oh well, it’s an excuse to get out of the safe house for a little while. Shaun is half-way to a panic attack, so I hope him finally being able to see Tiny Passenger on the ultrasound screen will cheer him up.
I am not half-way to a panic attack! I am fully having one. Holidays about stabbing dictators are significantly less fun when you were, in fact, stabbed almost to death earlier this year.

Wooly is an enabler. He might not be the one directly hurting Amanda/Rebecca but he keeps sabotaging her and helping Hameln control her. He actively discourages her from going against rules, he tries to railroad her. He gets annoyed when she doesn't act like the compliant little puppet Hameln would want her to be.
I think nothing demonstrates how little Wooly actually cares about Amanda as opposed to the "role" she's supposed to play than the "When You Feel Bad" tape.
Amanda is down in the dumps, so Wooly, nervous because the show needs a protag to do stuff and he's the sidekick so he can't fill that role, keeps trying to get her to go on any sort of adventure even when Amanda makes it clear she just wants to be left alone.
When Wooly tells his little knight and princess story he doesn't really care that Amanda doesn't like it, even gets snippy and dismissive of her when she tells him this story is doing nothing to lift her spirits. At the end of the story Amanda still feels bad, but Wooly doesn't even acknowledge that.
When Riley tells the story Amanda wants to hear, Wooly again gets pissy and demands Riley tell his story, even though Amanda is visibly happier with Riley making stuff up. Notice how in Riley's re-write, we have a narrator telling the story instead of Wooly. I think that's Sam. Wooly realizes Riley is steering Amanda away from Hameln and towards her former memories as Rebecca by invoking Sam. And he doesn't like that.
So long story short, Wooly isn't Amanda's friend. He's her Hameln-assigned handler. He could care less about her feelings as long as she does as she's told.

After all these years, ‘I Remember You’ is still one of the great highlights of Adventure Time Storytelling. And not just in the basic ‘what???? Silly children’s cartoon does something SAD??? HOLY SHIT MIND BLOWN’ way. But with the execution of that Something Sad. How it manages to pack so many Complex Emotions into just 11-minutes of television. And especially the way it utilizes the basic Adventure Time format for that purpose.
So Adventure Time is a Board-based show. Each episode has an outline pitched and written down by the writer’s room, and then this outline goes to a team of (usually) two Storyboard Artists who develop that simple outline into a full story. And with the show’s art-style deliberately eschewing staying perfectly ‘on-model’ in favor of having the animators take direct reference from how the different storyboarders draw the characters

And the show being generally extremely versatile in terms of themes and tone - AT has allowed a lot of their Storyboarders to really express themselves and their unique artistic vision as part of the Big Collaborative Narrative that is Adventure Time. 
Now, the Boarders who worked on ‘I Remember You’ are Cole Sanchez and Rebecca Sugar. These two were a Storyboarding Duo from the start of S4 and until Sugar left the AT Crew during S5, and they always struck me as a curious combination. I think really from all of the individual boarders working on AT during that time, these two really are the closest to having like… Totally Opposite Artistic Sensibilities as boarders. 
With Sugar favoring a style that is very loose and sketchy and also very rounded. Focusing on expressions and subtle body language and lighting. And being famous for going deep in depth into Big Moments of Emotional Catharsis

And Sanchez having a very clear art style that emphasizes strong silhouettes and clear lines that suggest flatness. Focusing more on major poses and the character’s positions in the space. And having just a really great eye for AT’s brand of silly humor.

Like, I almost kinda suspect these two were paired together so they can each cover for the other’s “weakspots” in writing ‘Adventure Time’. 
And there were a few episodes that did some really interesting stuff with this very contrasting pair - ‘Jake the Dog’ is another example. Giving most of the Farmworld scenes to Sugar and most of the Time Room scenes to Sanchez both plays to their personal strengths as storyboarders and helps to emphasize the strong emotional contrast between these two scenarios.

And ‘I Remember You’ is actually kinda unique among Adventure Time episodes cause… Most episodes will have the two boarders alternate between working on the episode throughout it. Like you’d have Boarder A draw a bit and then Boarder B and then Boarder A again… But “I Remember You” is divided between Sanchez and Sugar… basically perfectly in the middle.
So the entirety of the first half of the episode was boarded by Sanchez

Until Ice King pushes Marceline and then leaves the room in shame.

And then, Sugar takes over.

And, like, even if you don’t know anything about the Behind the Scenes of Adventure Time or who Cole Sanchez and Rebecca Sugar even are - the Shift is noticeable. The shift in tone, in narrative focus, in the subtleties in which the characters are drawn.

The entire first half of the episode has this thin veneer of just being a Silly Goofy Ice King Episode. Sanchez’s talent for Adventure Time’s brand of comedy is on full display… but there is also this underlying feeling that Something is Happening just under the surface. And these hints of the Big Emotions of ‘IRY’ expressed via Sanchez’s kinda goofy style really create this balance between putting the audience into a false sense of security that this is just a Very Normal Episode about two characters hanging out and the Tension constantly brewing in the subtext. 
And then it all comes to a blow.

And then the Shift happens. And now we are in Sugar’s court.

And this subtle shift in the artstyle and storytelling also coincide with Marceline finally openly expressing her feelings and the Reveal of Simon and Marcy's shared past. The episode changes focus from Ice King's silly antics to Marceline's feelings. Everything changes, everything in the first part of the episode gets recontextualized and... even on the most basic level, the episode is now Noticeably Different.
I would almost say that Sanchez’s half of the episode has Ice King define the tone, while Sugar’s half of the episode has Marceline define the tone. But more than anything it’s the catharsis. The reveal and release of those emotions that were building up so expertly through the Sanchez half of the episode. All of the Sugar-boarded scenes in this episode are really heartbreaking on their own, just through the tragedy of the story and Sugar’s expert knowledge of howto convey emotion in the visual medium - but it’s so enchanted by what came before it.
“I Remember You” is truly a great testament to how ‘Adventure Time’ could use every aspect of its medium to tell a great story in such a short time.

Types of Book Genres
Mystery. Follows a crime (like a murder or a disappearance) from the moment it is committed to the moment it is solved. Mystery novels are often called “whodunnits” because they turn the reader into a detective trying to figure out the who, what, when, and how of a particular crime. Most mysteries feature a detective or private eye solving a case as the central character.
Thriller. According to the New York Public Library, thrillers gradually build anxiety and suspense. Examples of thrillers include “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn, “All Her Little Secrets” by Wanda M. Morris and “The Silent Patient” by Alex Michaelides. ⚜ Psychological Thriller
Horror. “Carrie” by Stephen King, “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson and Edgar Allen Poe’s work are all under the umbrella of horror. These works are intended to frighten audiences and elicit a feeling of dread, according to the CDE.
Historical Fiction. Historical fiction takes place in a historical setting, the CDE notes. Some examples of historical fiction include “The Prophets” by Robert Jones, Jr. and “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah.
Romance. Romance Writers of America (RWA) noted that romance refers to optimistic and emotionally satisfying stories that focus on a central love story. “The Love Hypothesis” by Ali Hazelwood and “Red, White and Royal Blue” by Casey McQuiston are both romance novels.
Western. Primarily set in the American Old West between the late 18th century and late 19th century and tell the stories of cowboys, settlers, and outlaws exploring the western frontier and taming the Wild West.
Bildungsroman. Translates to “novel of education” or “novel of formation,” chronicles a character’s journey from young innocence to worldly adulthood. This is a specific type of coming-of-age story in which the character gains knowledge and experience, even as innocence is lost.
Speculative Fiction. Refers to genres not based in reality, including work with magical, supernatural or otherwise imagined elements. Essentially, speculative fiction is the opposite of mimetic fiction. The category includes subgenres like fantasy, science-fiction, dystopian fiction and more, Witcover noted.
Science Fiction. This genre often involves science and technology of the future. Science fiction is frequently set in space or a different universe or world. It often uses some real theories of science.
Fantasy. According to the California Department of Education (CDE), fantasy "invites suspension of reality." The genre encompasses stories that wouldn't happen in real life, often set in another world or including magical elements.
Dystopian fiction. Imagines a future place in cataclysmic decline.
Action and Adventure. The tension of the protagonist’s journey in an adventure story creates a pulse-pounding, adrenaline-pumping storyline. Dramatic car chases, secret missions, and violent fight scenes often pop up in famous action stories. Great action writing draws in your audience, getting their adrenaline pumping as they turn the page.
Nonfiction (Memoir: Stories from an author’s life that offer a firsthand account of events are called memoirs. According to Reader's Digest, some highly-recommended memoirs include “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou and “Spare” by Prince Harry. ; Autobiography: a nonfiction (true) account of someone’s life. It is written by the subject of the autobiography; Biography: tell the story of a notable person’s life, written by someone other than the subject. Some examples are “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, which tells the story of the adventurer Chris McCandless, and “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot.)
Food and Travel. Cookbooks, food history books, travel guides and travel memoirs all fall under this category that includes “The Omnivore's Dilemma” by Michael Pollan and “My Life in France” by Julia Child.
Humor. Strong humor writers have a way of spotting the patterns of life and bringing them to the surface at exactly the right moment.
Young Adult. YA books are intended for readers between 12 and 18 years old, according to Smithsonian Magazine. Some examples include “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas.
Children's Fiction. Many classic examples of children’s literature are picture books, including “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak or “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” by Mo Willems. Scholastic noted most picture books are intended for children up to seven years old.
Knowing your Genre. The world of literature abounds with different genres.
Although every literary genre has its own trends and defining characteristics, the divisions between these categories aren't always clear. Whether you’re picking another book off the shelf or plotting out your new novel, learning more about genre can help you decide what comes next.
If you want to become a writer, there are a number of reasons to learn about genres, according to Paul Witcover, associate dean of the online Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing program at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU).
“I feel it’s important for writers to have an understanding of genre because it will impact how their books are marketed, as well as how they are perceived by publishers,” he said. “But I also think writers can be too concerned with genre.”
Although he encourages writers to learn about the subject, Witcover noted a tendency for overly rigid ideas about the distinctions between genres. “Concepts of genre are more fluid than writers may believe,” he said. It's important to keep that fluidity in mind.
Genre is determined by need and audience expectation. Its set functions are determined by its social need.
Broadly speaking, the fiction world is divided into 2 segments: literary fiction and genre fiction.
Literary fiction typically describes the kinds of books that are assigned in high school and college English classes, that are character driven and describe some aspect of the human condition. Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners tend to come from the literary fiction genre.
Genre fiction has a more mainstream, populist appeal. It traditionally comprises genres such as romance, mystery, thriller, horror, fantasy, and children’s books.
Some genre writers straddle a line between genre-focused commercial fiction and the traditions of literary fiction.
Traditionally, there are 4 broader categories of genre:
Fiction: Imagined or invented literature is called fiction, Writers & Artists noted. Examples of fiction titles include “1984” by George Orwell and “Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng.
Nonfiction: According to Writers & Artists, nonfiction refers to fact-based works. Some nonfiction titles include “The Body Keeps Score” by Bessel van der Kolk and “I Am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai, and “Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking” by Marcella Hazan.
Poetry: Britannica defines poetry as “literature that evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound and rhythm.” Poetry incorporates poetic elements and encompasses the work of writers like Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, Amanda Gorman and Richard Siken.
Drama: Dramatic literature refers to texts of plays that can be read for their literary value as well as performed, according to Britannica. Dramas include stage directions and specific formatting not found in prose or verse. Some of the most studied dramas are Shakespeare’s plays, like “Hamlet” and “Romeo and Juliet.” You might be familiar with other dramas, too, like “Death of a Salesman” and “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller or August Wilson’s Century Cycle of 10 dramas depicting the Black experience in the U.S. throughout the 20th century, including “The Piano Lesson” and “Fences.”
Although most writing falls into at least one of these 4 categories, the edges are a bit blurred, and there can be overlap.

It seems the general advice is to learn about the different genres first, and try to see which elements your story has that align with them. Perhaps start with the broader categories first, then narrow it down to the major genres, until you identify which specific subgenre your story fits. And it's fine if they overlap, as this happens with most novels. Hope this helps!

book recs: feb 2024
(disclaimer: I have spent nearly three months languishing and sullen with post-COVID symptoms and have read, over dec-feb, eighty-one books. this is a ruthlessly streamlined list of recs that does not include, uh, all the rereading of sarah maclean and charlie adhara and georgette heyer books.)
AT FIRST SPITE by olivia dade - what if I moved in next to the man who ruined my engagement to his younger brother, and tried to ruin his life by playing monsterfucking audiobooks really loudly?? a heartfelt and lovely romance that also expertly sets up a great small-town setting for an ongoing series.
THE REFORMATORY by tananarive due - historical horror based on the existence of a real school for boys, clear-eyed and brutal in showing the the effect of racist systems in the 1950s american south. compelling as hell. even if you're not usually into horror, I'd recommend this: the ghost aspect is light-handed and really not as important as the horror of what humans do to other humans.
SOMETHING WILD & WONDERFUL by anita kelly - this is a m/m romance about walking the pacific crest trail which made me see the appeal of very long walks. a miracle! it's gentle and emotional and well put together; the characters really grabbed me.
THE BELL IN THE FOG by lev a.c. rosen - the followup to 'lavender house', and somehow even better?? a historical mystery series featuring a queer private eye in 1950s san francisco who looks into crimes against other queer people. amazing queer history! ACAB! I hope there are fifty more books in this series.
FEAST WHILE YOU CAN* by mikaella clements & onjuli datta - beautiful, greedy, terrifying small-town horror that is also a fucking fantastic, gorgeously written sapphic love story. this one IS for the horror fans. it gave me the absolute creeps but I couldn't put it down.
LADY EVE'S LAST CON* by rebecca fraimow - I described this on bsky as 'if you like Leverage, space opera, old screwball comedies, and dashing sapphics who are at all times spiritually wearing a leather jacket: this one is for you' and I stand by that. huge amounts of fun.
LONG LIVE EVIL* by sarah rees brennan - I will be screaming from here until forever about SRB's first adult fantasy book. if you like the isekai'd-into-a-villain-character setup and want it to be hilarious, genre-savvy and wildly angry and clever, you will roll around in this like a blood-stained mud puddle and then beg for more.
THE LAST HOUR BETWEEN WORLDS* by melissa caruso - really clever and original fantasy about a woman on maternity leave who gets dragged into saving a cocktail party which is falling through increasingly murderous and bizarre dimensions. LISTEN, JUST GO WITH IT. it's a seriously cool adventure.
YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY* by cat sebastian - yes, it's another m/m romance about queer history in the mid 20th century, this one between a baseball player and the journalist assigned to write a story about his slump. made me care about baseball. cat is a genius.

"You were right, you know. When you said you felt yourself rotting."
The floor creaks. Riley does not look. They can't. Not right now. Instead, their eyes are locked on the little skull they hold in their hands.
It feels...small. Frail. Once it was the head of a little girl who had the sweetest smile, who lit up everyone's lives, who held their hand and said "Wanna go on an adventure?" Now it's nothing. Just part of a rotting body.
...Rebecca's body. Amanda's body. The former body of the entity that they now turn to look up at.
Unlike the other times they've run into it, the entity isn't attacking. It stares at them, at the skull and the rotting body, at the dark room. Riley wants to scream. Not at the horror of a demon invading their space. Instead, they want to scream because it's so fucking unfair it's almost funny.
Rebecca had wanted to be a teacher, helping kids in the foster system like her, or a writer, like Sam. She was saving up for a kitten. She was planning the anniversary of her adoption because Sam said she deserved a big party. She deserved more than to have her life snuffed out because some corporation decided to fuck around with demons and have her body thrown in this dark pit.
At least this dark pit was what remained of her home.
Would they find Sam here? If they dug around, would they find his remains? Had Rebecca seen Sam before they killed her?
The entity steps forward, reaches out, and Riley only realizes that they're crying when a claw gently traces her cheek. "I'm so sorry," they sob out, reaching out and holding Rebecca's face. "I'm so fucking sorry I wasn't there for you."
Holding Rebecca's skull and holding Rebecca, Riley wishes that they can say everything that is building up in their brain: you didn't deserve this, you deserved more than that wool for brains, I love you, Sam loved you, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry...
But there isn't enough time.

The "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series at Disney+ has added an unexpected pick to its growing cast.
The new live-action series is based on the hugely successful novels from author Rick Riordan of the same title. We will be seeing YN LN join the series as Rina Velasco, one of the supporting characters of the show.
LN's Rina Velasco is referred to as "the offspring of The Muses, goddesses of the sciences and the arts." Unlike most other demigods, she is born out of the artistic and scientific output of the muses. When the moral ingenuity of humans meets the divine musings of The Muses. Her character is described as a unique allrounder who becomes a mentor figure to our main cast as they embark on their journey.
This will be LN's first on-screen role of her career. LN's experience mostly lies in Broadway, she is known for playing Kim in the Miss Saigon revival on Broadway. LN was nominated for a Tony in 2022 for the same role. She is repped by Salonga/Chien Entertainment and B817 Agency.
Riordan posted on the Meta app, Threads, about this update to the casting saying: "YN was one of the actors we didn't expect to see a tape of but when we saw it, we couldn't help but fall in love with her. She embodies the spirit of Rina so well and is such a kind spirit, we can't wait for you to fall in love with her too! Welcome to the cast, YN!"
The live-action show is based on Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson book series. It tells the fantastical tale of the titular 12-year-old modern demigod (Scobell), who's just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. With help from his friends Grover (Simhadri) and Annabeth (Jeffries), Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.
Production on the show is now underway in Vancouver. Riordan and Jon Steinberg are writing the pilot with James Bobin directing. Steinberg and his producing partner Dan Shotz are overseeing the series and serve as executive producers alongside Bobin, Rick Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, Anders Engström, Jet Wilkinson, and Gotham Group's Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and D.J. Rebecca’s eyes followed your gaze. When they landed on the man you were staring at, her jaw dropped. “No. Freaking. Way.
That’s Mr. Hotchner himself. See? I told you tonight was meant to be fun!”
You buried your face in your hands, groaning. “Oh my God, this cannot be happening.”
“Come on,” Rebecca said with a grin, tugging on your arm. “We’ll deal with that later. Let’s hit the dance floor!
As you were making your way to the dance floor, a tall man accidentally bumped into you.
“Whoa, sorry about that, ladies,” he said, flashing a charming smile.
You smiled politely. “Oh, it’s okay, sir.”
He chuckled, shaking his head. “Sir? Come on, now. I’m Derek Morgan, but you can just call me Derek.”
You introduced yourself, but before you could finish, you heard someone call your name from across the room. You froze, recognizing the voice immediately.
“Oh, great,” you muttered under your breath.
Derek��s brow furrowed as he glanced toward the source of your discomfort. “Everything okay?”
You let out a sigh. “Not really. That’s my ex.
I haven’t seen him in six months, but he won’t stop harassing me with calls and messages. I’ll be fine, though.” You offered a polite smile. “It’s nice to meet you, Sir.”
“Just Derek,” he reminded you with a smile and nod before heading back to his group.
When Derek rejoined his friends, he leaned in and spoke low enough for only them to hear. “Hey, guys, keep an eye on that guy over there.”
JJ glanced toward your ex, then back at Derek.
“Those girls he’s bothering?
“Emily chimed in , They’re beautiful.”
Derek nodded. “Right, but that guy’s trouble. Stay sharp.”
Aaron Hotchner and Spencer Reid , who had been quietly observing, straightened up. “Got it,” they said, There tone calm but firm.
As you tried to make your way to the dance floor, your ex suddenly appeared in front of you, stepping into your path with a forceful presence.
Without warning, he grabbed your arm.
“Come on, dance with me,” Nate said, his voice laced with a sense of entitlement.
You pulled away sharply, your heart racing. “No, Nate. No.”
Rebecca, sensing the tension, stepped forward. “Leave her alone, Nate.”
He sneered at Rebecca, getting right in her face. “What are you going to do about it?” he challenged.
You stepped in between them, trying to keep the peace. “Stop, Nate.”
“You think you can do better than me?” he spat, yanking your arm toward him with force.
You winced as you tried to pull away again, your voice trembling. “Nate, please…”
Rebecca didn’t hesitate. She stepped right in front of you, blocking Nate from getting any closer. “I said, leave her alone.”
At that moment, you noticed two figures coming up behind Nate—two men in suits.
You didn’t recognize them at first, but the intensity of their approach made you feel a flicker of relief.
Hotch and Reid exchanged a glance, both knowing what needed to be done.
“Let’s move,” Hotch said, his voice calm but firm.
Reid nodded. “Right.”
They reached Nate, moving with purpose, and Reid spoke up first, though his voice wavered slightly. “Sir, I’m Dr. Spencer Reid.”
Nate just laughed, clearly dismissive. “Okay, Dr. Please, leave us alone.”
But Hotch didn’t wait. He stepped forward, his gaze locked on Nate, commanding the situation.
“Take your hand off her.” His tone was unwavering, and it made your heart race in a different way—one of safety.
Nate scoffed, sizing Hotch up. “And who are you? Some guy in a suit?”
Hotch didn’t flinch.
“No, I’m with the FBI.” He flashed his badge, and Reid did the same, pulling his badge from his jacket pocket with practiced precision.
Nate’s demeanor faltered. He let go of your arm, his eyes wide with realization. “Whoa, okay. I didn’t want to start any trouble.”
Spencer added, his voice firm but measured. “Leave these ladies alone.”
Nate stepped back, defeated but unwilling to admit his wrongdoing.
As he walked away, Hotch’s eyes never left you, his gaze steady and protective.
Reid glanced over at you with concern. “Are you guys okay?”
You nodded, feeling both shaken and somehow grounded by their intervention.
Spencer, after sharing a brief look with Rebecca, turned to her with a smile. “Would you like to dance?”
Rebecca grinned and nodded eagerly. “I’d love to.”
With that, they made their way to the center of the dance floor, where the soft rhythm of the slow song started to fill the space.
As they began to move together, you found yourself standing next to Hotch, the noise of the crowd fading around you. The moment felt suspended in time.
The song continued to play, and with it, a quiet anticipation seemed to linger between you and Hotch.
The distance between you both felt palpable. As you stood there, your nerves betrayed you.
After a long, almost unspoken pause, Hotch finally broke the silence. “Would you like to dance?” His voice was calm, steady, like everything around you was perfectly still.
You swallowed, trying to steady your breath. Your response came out as a soft, almost hesitant nod. “Yes.”
Without missing a beat, Hotch stepped closer and pulled you gently into his arms. The warmth of his touch was immediate, a powerful presence that settled in the pit of your stomach. There was something so unexpectedly comforting about his strength and the quiet connection between you both.
Neither of you said a word as you moved together, the music guiding you. You could feel the steady beat of his heart beneath your ear as you laid your head against his chest. The world seemed to shrink down to just the two of you. The way he held you, his hand at the small of your back, was both reassuring and electrifying.
In the distance, you could see Rebecca and Spencer, the two of them enjoying their own rhythm on the dance floor. Their laughter mixed with the music, but you couldn’t help but notice the way Rebecca kept glancing over at you and Hotch, a knowing smile playing on her lips.

As the music filled the space, Hotch finally broke the quiet. His voice was soft but steady, as if he were reading the air around you. “I bet you weren’t expecting this tonight.”
You glanced up at him, your breath catching slightly. The warmth of his gaze sent a ripple of heat through you. “No,” you admitted with a quiet laugh, “not really. I wasn’t expecting you to be here.”
Hotch let out a low chuckle, the sound somehow calming yet undeniably magnetic. “I meant me saving you from disaster, of course.”
The words hung in the air for a moment, and you couldn’t help but smile a little, even as the conversation turned more serious. Before you could speak, your mind drifted back to Friday—your interview with him. The nerves you had then felt so distant now.
You hesitated, unsure of how to word the question that had been on your mind. "When did you realize it was me?"
Hotch’s gaze never wavered from you as he answered. “When Derek pointed you both out to me.”
The admission caught you off guard, but you masked your surprise quickly. “You did a background check on me?” you asked, your voice laced with both curiosity and a hint of disbelief.
He nodded, but there was no malice in his expression. “I mean, I had my tech, Garcia, do it. Your photo was attached to your file.”
You couldn’t help but chuckle, shaking your head at the unexpectedness of it all. “Oh,” you said, a little breathless. “I see. It’s... very impressive.”
Hotch smirked slightly, his eyes glinting with amusement. “Well, I like to know who I’m dealing with.” His tone softened, and his hand instinctively adjusted the way he held you, his touch warm and grounding.
You tried not to let the thought linger for too long, but the subtle tension in the air between you two was undeniable. Every shift of his hand, every look shared between you both, seemed to make the room shrink.
As the slow dance continued, you found yourself drawn further into his presence. You weren’t sure whether it was the proximity or the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against your ear, but everything felt different now. The connection between you wasn’t just physical—it was something more, something deeper.
From the corner of your eye, you could see Rebecca still dancing with Spencer, her gaze flicking between you and Hotch, her knowing smile more evident than ever. You couldn’t suppress the small glare you sent her way. But even that felt secondary to the unspoken pull between you and Hotch.
The night was unfolding in ways you never expected, but somehow, it felt like everything was falling into place, one slow dance at a time.
As the night came to a close, you and Rebecca had the chance to meet the rest of the team. Garcia was just as vibrant and lively as you’d imagined, her bright smile infectious. JJ’s warm energy was comforting, and Emily had an air of quiet confidence. Rossi, ever the seasoned professional, gave you a kind nod. Derek was smiling, still a bit playful, as you turned to him, grateful for everything he’d done tonight.
You offered Derek a hug, your voice soft but sincere. “Thank you for looking out for me... and for Rebecca.”
He smiled warmly, pulling you into a brief but genuine embrace. “Anytime. Stay safe, alright?”
Rebecca, meanwhile, was chatting away with Reid, exchanging numbers with him as they laughed. You couldn’t help but glance at Hotch.
Every time you looked, his gaze was already on you, steady and unwavering, like he was silently taking you in from across the room.
Rebecca, clearly sensing your distraction, turned to you with a mischievous grin. “You okay over there?”
You offered her a quick smile, trying to shake off the feeling that had settled in your chest. “Yeah, just... taking it all in.”
Hotch’s voice cut through the moment. “Would you both like a ride home?” His tone was calm, yet there was something in it—something that made you feel both comforted and a little on edge.
Rebecca immediately agreed, her smile widening. “Yes, please. I’m not about to try finding a cab tonight.”
You nodded, not sure what to say. But you knew you couldn’t say no.
Reid, ever the gentleman, insisted on riding with you all, clearly wanting more time with Rebecca. You could see the small smile on his face.
As you all stepped outside into the chilly night air, the cold hit your skin, but it didn’t seem to matter.
Hotch moved toward you, opening the door of the black SUV. You felt a flicker of warmth at the gesture, even though the night was crisp.
Reid did the same for Rebecca, and for the first time all night, she was quiet.
You glanced over at her, wondering if she was feeling the same undercurrent of tension that you were.
Without a word, she reached for your hand, her touch grounding.
You didn’t have to say anything—it felt like there was an understanding between you two, unspoken but clear.
Once everyone was settled inside, you spoke up, your voice breaking the silence.
“We’re just a few blocks from here. Just take a couple left turns, and I’ll tell you when to stop.”
Hotch gave a short nod, his gaze meeting yours for a brief moment. “Got it,” he replied, his voice steady.
The engine hummed to life as the SUV pulled away from the curb, the soft sound of the tires on the road blending with the quiet stillness of the night. But the tension, the pull between you and Hotch, was still there—lingering
As you arrived at your and Rebecca’s apartment, Reid turned to you with a kind smile. “It was nice to meet you,” he said sincerely.
“You as well,” you replied softly, your voice tinged with shyness.
Reid stepped out of the SUV and circled around to open the door on Rebecca’s side. As she got out, she turned to you, placing a reassuring hand on your shoulder. “Be good to her, Hotchner,” she said firmly, her voice filled with protective warmth.
Hotch met her gaze in the rearview mirror and gave a small nod, a silent acknowledgment of her words. Then, his attention shifted to you, his dark eyes calm yet piercing.
You tried to focus, but your thoughts were spinning. One question had been circling in your mind ever since Rebecca had scribbled it in your notebook. It felt too big to ignore.
You looked up at Hotch, hesitating for a moment. “Can I ask you an off-the-record question?” you finally managed, your voice tentative as you wrestled with your nerves.
“Of course,” he replied gently, his tone inviting trust.
Before you could stop yourself, the words tumbled out: “Are you… gay?”
Hotch’s brows knitted together in confusion as he processed your question.
Your eyes widened in panic. “I’m sorry—I don’t know what came over me,” you blurted, flustered and immediately regretting your boldness.
Before he could respond, the sound of his phone vibrating cut through the moment. He pulled it out, his expression sharpening as he read the message.
“It’s Reid,” Hotch said, his tone calm but clipped. “He says your ex is waiting for you on the steps.”
Your stomach dropped, a cold wave of fear washing over you. “What?”
Hotch hesitated, reading the message again. What he didn’t say aloud was the rest: He’s got Rebecca. He’s holding her arm.
“Hey,” Hotch said firmly, drawing your attention back to him. “It’ll be okay. We’ve got this, all right?”
You nodded shakily, though your hands trembled. Together, you stepped out of the SUV and made your way toward the apartment.
Your heart dropped when you saw Nate—his hand gripping Rebecca’s arm as Reid tried to intervene.
“Get your hands off her!” you shouted, rushing forward despite the fear gripping you.
Nate turned, his face twisted with anger. “Oh, so you’re with the suit guy now?” he spat, his voice venomous.
“Nate, let her go,” you demanded, your voice stronger this time. “Let her go now.”
Hotch stepped in beside you, his presence commanding. “You need to leave. Now,” he said, his voice low and firm, brooking no argument. “Unless you’d prefer I call my team and have you in handcuffs for harassment. Got it?”
Nate hesitated, glaring at you and then at Hotch. But something in Hotch’s tone—or maybe the promise of a full FBI team arriving—made him think better of it. With a muttered curse, he let go of Rebecca and stormed off.
Hotch stepped closer to you, his arm brushing against yours protectively as he watched Nate leave. “It’s okay,” he said softly, his steady presence grounding you.
You turned back to Rebecca, rushing to her side as tears welled in your eyes. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Rebecca said, her voice breaking as she pulled you into a hug. The two of you clung to each other, the weight of the moment spilling out in shared tears.
“I thought I had him,” Reid said apologetically, looking at Hotch with guilt in his eyes.
“It’s fine,” Hotch reassured him, his tone firm but understanding. “You did everything you could.”
The four of you stood there for a moment, the tension easing as you realized it was finally over—for now. But as Hotch’s hand rested lightly on your back, you couldn’t help but feel safe, like everything might really be okay.
Hotch turned to you as the tension began to fade, his presence still steady and reassuring. “Good night,” he said gently, his dark eyes meeting yours. “If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call.”
You nodded, feeling a warmth in his words that helped ease some of the lingering panic.
“Thank you,” you said softly.
Reid stepped forward, offering Rebecca a comforting hug before giving you both a small smile. “Good night,” he added warmly.
“Good night,” you and Rebecca said in unison, your voices subdued but sincere.
You and Rebecca headed toward the apartment as Hotch and Reid got back into the SUV. The low hum of the engine reached your ears as the vehicle pulled away, disappearing into the night.
Once inside, you both stopped for a moment to catch your breath, the events of the night weighing heavily on you.
“Man, what a night,” Rebecca muttered, breaking the silence.
“Not exactly the kind I was hoping for,” you replied with a soft laugh that didn’t quite reach your eyes.
“I’m so sorry,” Rebecca said, her voice trembling.
You turned to her, shaking your head firmly. “This isn’t your fault, Rebecca. Do you hear me? None of this is your fault. You didn’t know Nate would show up at the club, and you definitely didn’t know he’d be waiting for us here.”
Rebecca let out a shaky breath, her eyes glistening. “I guess none of us expected to meet the FBI tonight either.”
At that, you couldn’t help but giggle, the tension breaking just a little. “Yeah, not exactly a normal Wednesday night.”
Rebecca gasped, her hand flying to her chest in mock offense. “Oh my God, you’re laughing! Who are you, and what have you done with my stressed-out best friend?”
You grinned. “What can I say? I’m full of surprises.” You paused, the weight of the evening still heavy but beginning to lift. “I need a hot shower,” you added, stretching your arms.
Rebecca perked up. “Pizza?”
“Absolutely,” you said with a nod.
“I’ll order it,” she offered, already pulling out her phone
“Great. Extra cheese, please,” you called over your shoulder as you made your way to the bathroom.
The sound of water cascading from the showerhead was a soothing balm, washing away the tension of the evening. You leaned your forehead against the cool tile, letting the steam wrap around you like a comforting embrace. For the first time in hours, you allowed yourself to breathe deeply.
When you stepped out of the shower, the faint aroma of freshly delivered pizza filled the apartment. You grabbed your phone from the counter, smiling at the text message that had come in while you were in the shower.
Hotch: Stay safe. We’re here if you need us. And to answer your off-the-record question… No, I’m not gay. It was nice meeting you tonight. See you Friday for your interview. Also… Reid is absolutely crazy for your friend.
You couldn’t help the smile that spread across your face as you read the message. A warmth bloomed in your chest, the earlier embarrassment of your question melting into something lighter—something you couldn’t quite name yet.
“Pizza’s here!” Rebecca called from the kitchen.
“Perfect timing,” you replied, setting your phone down as you padded into the living room, the smell of pizza making your stomach rumble.
Rebecca handed you a plate, raising her eyebrows when she saw the faint blush on your cheeks. “What’s got you smiling like that?”
“Nothing,” you said quickly, taking a big bite of pizza to avoid further questioning.
But as Rebecca turned back to the TV, you glanced at your phone again, the message still glowing on the screen. You couldn’t stop the small smile from returning.
Maybe tonight wasn’t all bad after all.
The next couple of days flew by in a blur of school assignments, internship tasks, and the lingering emotions from that unforgettable night.
Before you knew it, it was Friday—the day of your interview with Hotch.
You were both nervous and excited, knowing the interview wasn’t just for your school paper but also for Vogue, the magazine where you were interning.
Rebecca had insisted on driving you to the BAU office, claiming it was the least she could do after everything that had happened.
“Why are you so calm?” you asked, staring at her in disbelief as she hummed along to the radio.
“I’m not the one interviewing an FBI Unit Chief,” she replied with a grin. “That’s all you.”
You sighed, glancing down at your nearly blank notebook. Despite your best efforts over the past couple of days, your mind had been an absolute mess.
You’d written a few questions, but none of them felt right.
“I can’t think,” you muttered, running a hand through your hair. “Help me.”
Rebecca gave you a sympathetic look as she pulled up to a stoplight. “Okay, how about this: start with the basics. Ask him what made him want to join the FBI.
Then maybe something about the most rewarding part of his job.”
You nodded, jotting her suggestions down. “That’s good. What else?”
“Hmm… maybe ask him about the hardest case he’s ever worked on or what it’s like to manage a team under so much pressure.”
You scribbled furiously, feeling a small spark of inspiration.
“Also,” Rebecca added with a mischievous grin, “you should totally ask him how he manages to look so intimidating all the time.”
You let out a laugh, shaking your head. “Yeah, because that wouldn’t be awkward at all.”
Rebecca shrugged, her grin widening. “Hey, it’s a valid question.”
By the time you arrived at the BAU, you had a decent list of questions, though your nerves were still in overdrive. Rebecca parked and turned to you, her expression softening.
“You’re going to be great,” she said firmly.
You took a deep breath and nodded. “Thanks, Beck.”
When you walked into the BAU office, you couldn’t help but be awed by the energy of the space. Agents moved with purpose, phones rang in the background, and the atmosphere hummed with quiet intensity.
A receptionist greeted you and directed you to a conference room where Hotch was waiting.
As you entered, you spotted him standing by the table, reviewing some papers. He looked up as you approached, his calm and collected demeanor instantly grounding you.
“Good afternoon,” he said with a small, welcoming smile. “You must be here for the interview.”
“Yes,” you replied, extending your hand. “Thank you for taking the time to meet with me, Agent Hotchner.”
“Call me Hotch,” he said, shaking your hand firmly.
You settled into a chair, opening your notebook as you tried to steady your nerves.
“Are you ready?” he asked, his tone professional yet kind.
You nodded, taking a deep breath before diving into your first question.
“What made you want to join the FBI?” you began, your voice steadier than you’d expected.
Hotch leaned back slightly, considering your question. “Originally, I worked as a prosecutor.
But I realized I wanted to be more involved in preventing crime rather than addressing it after the fact. The FBI offered me the chance to make a difference in a more hands-on way.”
You scribbled down his response, already feeling more at ease. “What’s the most rewarding part of your job?”
He paused, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. “Knowing that we’re able to bring closure to victims and their families. It’s not always easy, but when we solve a case, it reminds us why we do what we do.”
“What’s the hardest case you’ve ever worked on?” you asked next, your voice quieter as you sensed the weight of the question.
Hotch’s jaw tightened slightly, and you could see a flicker of something—pain, maybe—flash in his eyes. “Every case involving children is difficult,” he admitted. “Those are the ones that stick with you the most.”
You nodded solemnly, feeling a pang of empathy. “How do you manage the pressure of leading a team in such high-stakes situations?”
Hotch folded his hands on the table, his tone steady. “I trust my team. They’re some of the most capable people I’ve ever worked with. We rely on each other, and that makes all the difference.”
As the interview continued, you couldn’t help but notice how thoughtful and measured Hotch was with each response. Despite his stoic exterior, there was a quiet strength and kindness to him that made you feel completely at ease.
By the time you wrapped up, you had pages of notes and a new level of admiration for him.
“Thank you again for taking the time to do this,” you said as you gathered your things.
“It was my pleasure,” Hotch replied, standing as you prepared to leave. “And remember, if you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to call.”
As you walked out of the BAU, you couldn’t help but smile. When you glanced at your phone, a new message popped up from Hotch:
Hotch: Stay safe. We’re here if needed. Also, it was nice meeting you again. And Reid wasn’t kidding—he’s definitely interested in your friend.
You laughed softly, tucking your phone back into your bag. As the BAU disappeared behind you, you felt a sense of pride—and maybe something more—that you couldn’t quite put into words yet.

🧦☕🧸A Guide to Writing Cozy Fantasy

What is "cozy fantasy"? 🧺🪵
Cozy fantasy is a subgenre that is characterized by a more everyday approach to fantasy.
While its definition is not as clear-cut (everyone will have a sightly different idea of what it needs to look like), there are some general approaches to writing in this subgenre.
Elements of Cozy Fantasy 🕯️ೀ
A comforting, healing ambience 🍪
Rather than bloody battle and cunning witches, we have our next door wizard baker chumming up his special pumpkin pie.
Every magical book at their deepest core evoke a healing quality, but for these cozy novels, this warm element takes control.
2. "Kindness” and ‘gentleness” tropes 🍂
Found family/community, a sense of togetherness
Kind hearted protangoists
Plots gull of joy, hope or happy endings. Give your readers reassurance that everything will work out. And they do.
Ambience woven in the worldbuilding that gets the reader intitamely close to the world
Slower pace, allow the reader to delve into the story world and build stake in these kind, loving characters.
Slice of life: provide personal insight into the character’s “mundane” lives. 
The plot must take this "happy" nad kind" element as the MAIN theme. Every book provides catharsis at the end, but if the process if filled with dark, dangerous adventures, that's not cozy at all!
3. Cozy doesn’t mean “no/low stake” 📖
No novel would be interesting without conflict and some kind of loss.
Think of “personal” stakes. Cozy fantasy can be grand adventures, quiet magical quests, fairytales or healing slice of life stories.
For example, the protagonist can develop new relationship around town and figure out her passion to express the theme of importance of enduring. 
4. Generally slower pace, focusing more on the inner development of the protagonist and the main side characters.
