I have several wild theories and random thoughts about Jack & Joker, and episode two gave me a lot of answers, like Joke’s chest tattoos are “Loyalty” and “Hate Love” (in black and red!)
But what I care most about is the colors! Joke wore red several times this episode starting with the prison uniform he wore at the beginning of the episode.
And when he opened his locker, all the items in it had red on them.
When he left the prison, he was, of course, all in red.
Because even when his face is hidden, the red gives Joke away.
It’s his color. When he performed the first con in episode one, his braces had red rubber bands.
When he performed the bank robbery, he wore a red tie.
And when he left his frowning face signature at the store, it was in red.
So in episode two, when he went to scam money from the loan sharks, he wore a red shirt (with the gold chain).
And in the end, he had a red rose around his neck, so we could know it was him without seeing his face.
So now that Jack has embodied his Jack the Reaper role, he starts wearing black.
Which could indicate his loss of hope and his acceptance of his doomed life.
But once he runs into Joke again,
And again,
And again,
Something changes in him due to his past popping up again.
Notice the red in the background?
As much as Jack is resistant to Joke’s reappearance, Joke has already schemed his way back into Jack’s . . . heart? Head? Life?
The light source appears to be coming from an altar, which if true, would be a nice nod to hope and repentance, two things Joke offers.
Jack watches over Save, who works at a restaurant with a red uniform, so I’m excited to see if Save’s personality is similar to Joke’s and perhaps this is why Jack worries about him.
And much like Jack, Joke has a bleeding heart (notice where he was cut) and wants to help others.
Including getting his gold chain back that was taken from him and a wedding ring back that means a lot to Jack considering it has his name all over it, and by “his name,” I mean Joke's since the ring is nestled in a case with a completely red interior.
But unlike the ring, which I’m confident Jack will put on Joke’s hand before this series ends, I’m not sure about the blues in this show.
In the first episode, both men wore blue, used a blue handkerchief to tend to their wounds, and now as Joke walked out of the prison, he wore blue sandals.
And perhaps my eyes are deceiving me, but even the whites look blue-ish.
And the darks look blue-ish.
And I think this is because the blue will connect these two.
Since it serves a reminder of who they once were and a happier time before everything went south for both of them.
But, once again, I’m not sure. Just like I’m not sure if my Tattoo x Aran ship is completely in my head even though I found it interesting that Tattoo knew Aran was the boss's son and what he would be doing without a second thought (as if he knows Aran from another time period).
However, it could just be that I like Tattoo and want him to have a rich boyfriend since he wore a Bob Ross shirt and got smacked with a hot pan while wearing a “City at Peace” shirt by a man named Hope (who I think will be a good guy).
SAIL SHIP SAIL!
#jack and joker#u steal my heart#the colors mean things#color coded boys in love#the red is for Joker#black is Jack the reaper#but is the blue for them when they were more hopeful#I don't know#but I'm too busy rooting for Aran x Tattoo#they would be amazing together

Important plot point for the New Age AU post-story dustedafterdeath plot- (realizing now slight tw for abusive relationship???)
Geno is a manipulative bastard who exerts his skill and prowess over others. With Reaper their relationship was balanced and became healthy thanks to Reaper actually being stronger than Geno. So all of Geno's manipulation was more like an angry chihuahua barking at Reaper. They got over that stage fast.
With Dust?? He doesn't realize he can't show his interest the same way. Doesn't occur to him that Dust is "lesser" than him in every situation. Royal Mage against a Knight, the Mage has more political power. Geno has direct ties to Reaper, who they need to keep happy for Night's treaty. Geno has more technical skill w/ his magic and Dust is sure the technique and control would be enough to best his own barely controlled magic. He's physically weaker, especially after his shoulder injury. So when Geno realizes he's caught feelings he feels guilty, but doesn't stop manipulating him?? Because Reaper was fine with it, so clearly that's how romance works right?
And it is (shocker) NOT how romance works.
While Dust is being low key pampered and spoiled by Reaper (Reaper recognizes the power dynamics very vividly and I'd sure to make sure Dust knows he can say No or Stop at any moment to anything, even hand-holding or escorting, and Reaper respects it) as Reaper compliments him and gives him gifts and asks how he's been. Geno is out here hyperfixated on Dust's latent magic and is getting his way to learn more no matter the cost (which, in this case, is faking romantic interest). And Reaper doesn't realize how intense Geno is bring because he *thought* Geno would know better. And with the fragile situation, Dust doesn't speak up.
So, ofc, it all comes to a head when Geno finally realizes he's gone too far, Dust completely shuts him out. And Geno is too proud to face his consequences and come clean to Dust about his intentions. Dust, usually quiet anyways, just moves on, though he's deeply distrustful of every pampering Reaper does for him now.
It isn't until 2 days later that Error is talking with Geno (y'know, brother gossip) and Error asks how it's going with Dust.
When Geno responds that his plan fell through, Error asks for elaboration, and Geno tell him the jist. Leas Dust on, then let him down gently. But he caught feels and Dust didn't seem to like the advances so he gave up. And Error knows his brother and knows that's not the full story. So they change subjects, and Error convinces Geno to go visit the woods on the edge of town to test a new weapon of his.
But once they're out there and alone Error reads his brother the riot act because he's so furious and disappointed!!! Dust of all people?? Manipulating him??? And when Geno tries to defend himself (digging a deeper hole and processing just how awful he was himself as he says it out loud) Error just straight up pulls him into combat. (And Geno, not wanting to accidentally hurt his brother but also furious + caught up in emotion, fights back.)
They beat eachother into the trees and the rocks and just tear into eachother, but by the time the Knights arrive to see what the problem is (the cats got word to Ccino, and Ccino sent Dust and Cross to figure it out) Geno is pretty much on low hp and Error is wounded but still standing.
Error spots the Knights and basically uses his strings to slam Geno to the ground at Dust's feet. And there's this moment of frustration and sorrow that seems to pass between the three of them, before Cross (<- unaware) asks what Error was thinking!
Error just says he'll explain it later and that they can go back now. Cross should carry Geno. Error would explain to Reaper (Geno flinched at that).
They return, and Error pulls Reaper aside to mutter some things to him. Reaper seems distressed and takes Geno from Cross, but doesn't even seem bothered at seeing his lover as roughed up as he was. He excuses them away, and Dust disappears into his room.
Error hunts down Dust and chills with him a bit. Error apologizes on his brother's behalf, and Dust seems just. Out of it. He won't say it's okay, because it's not, but he won't put pressure on Error because it's definitely not the kid's fault. So he settles on a tired laugh and thanking Error for beating up his big brother for him. (Error and Geno are on level playing field. As siblings, as Royal Mages, as partners to their kings. They are evenly matched in almost every way, so Error had the power to stand up for Dust, and Dust appreciates that.)
Amd after that little interaction, Dust actually realizes he's alright. He has people who will look out for him. Who will make sure everything goes smoothly. AND after joking with Error some more? He realizes Geno just. Has weird priorities. Weird ways of showing his affection. Dust decides he won't give Geno a second shot unless he bends and gives up his weird manipulation with Dust.
It takes a few days before Geno is done wallowing and processing, but he comes to find Dust (Reaper right behind him, supposedly to keep him in line) looking like a prideful lil wet cat. He says he's sorry, and that he realizes it was shitty of him, and that he will respect it if Dust wants him and Reaper to stop bothering him.
Dust clarifies and asks if Reaper was being genuine. (He was.) And he asks of Geno would be willing to give being genuine a shot (a hesitant yes). Dust does not push them away, but he does say he is going to inform Night. He also asks them to swear that no matter where the relationship ends, they will not take it out on Nightmare. (They agree.)
Like. Reaper, the romantic who is actually kind and wants to make lasting relationships *before* acting on his desires. Vs. Geno, the guy driven by desires who seems to stumble across romance by mistake every time. Both after Dust, most emotionally bottled skeleton they've ever met? Wild.
Geno is super toxic about his relationships and doesn't even notice in my aus ig. Goofy ahh. He eventually gets his conscience back. But it's. A struggle.
In the other au I have Dust guilt-trip him into being less of an idiot. In this one I make his brother throw him around like a ragdoll. (To Error, violence is often the answer <3)
#new age au#I love these guys I prommy#I just code Geno kinda in the way I'm built (Relationships being a means to an end for him. only getting attached when they become part of#your routine and you realize you wanf them around. which is rare.)#so he's a lil cold#a lil stupid#he does NOT have the spirit#like. might hc him as aro but I don't wanna villainize the label lmao. Geno's just built like that.#he adores Reaper (and later Dust) for sure but like. he's never sure he's ever doing it right. while Reaper and Dust seem so sure#just silly guys lol#(Iconic. i love Error committing sibling violence to knock some sense into his big bro)#alright that's enough! gn!

IDK if this would be considered a hot take or not, especially considering this is about Code of Violence and the only real hot take you can have with that story is liking it and thinking everyone is in character, but personally I think in the moment where Reaper pulls the gun on Sombra should have been triggered by Sombra mentioning Cassidy, not Jack.
In general I would change a lot in Code of Violence but that is a big one that sits in my brain. To me, when looking at Reaper current interactions with Jack and Cassidy, he seems more hostile towards Cassidy. Which makes sense since, along with the general anger that Reaper has with everyone, there would also be a sense of betrayal because I think a part of him expected Cassidy to fall down this hole with him.
There's also the fact that I think Reyes would be quicker to get angry at the mention of Cassidy then with the mention of Jack. Mainly cause yes, Jack brings up a sore spot, but Cassidy actively harms Reyes ego in a way that bringing up Jack wouldn't, and again, there would be more of a sense of betrayal there.
This is also a fact of narrative foils as well, Sombra and Cassidy mirror each other in the way that they come from very similar backgrounds but ended up on opposite paths. Sombra bringing up Cassidy makes sense narratively because of that and the fact that Sombra is very much invested in Cassidy's past, questioning his name, accepting stories about him from Ashe as payment, showing up at the same bar as him, it being implied through interactions that they know each other.
This might just be me still being upset that Cassidy (and Ana but that's a different post) weren't even mentioned in Code of Violence, and honestly this story beat is only in my brain in the "keep the main plot beats the same" rewrite of this. Personally I would have made Sigmas capture into Talon and Code of Violence two separate things.

The Lone Wolf names of Roost and Ryker
If you encounter an abandoned shack in the Meadows, you can find a secret export ledger wedged between the wall and a dresser. This tome does not appear on the map unless you are standing in the wheatfield directly outside the shack, otherwise it can only be highlighted if you hover over it with your cursor.
The tome is a ledger containing the pseudonyms of three clients: Grizzled Whisper, Dusty Rogue, and Bleeding Baron.
At first glance, the only useful information appears to be on the second page. The ledger tells us the Bleeding Baron's shipment was delivered behind the woodpile, but never retrieved, allowing the player to dig up a bag of loot.
If the player visits the drop-off locations of the other two clients, i.e. Dusty Rogue, no loot may be collected because the shipments have already been retrieved.
But this tome is actually connected to the side quest, The Merchant: the second page provides context to the fate of the travelling merchant, Baran Levere, while the first page hints at the codenames of two prominent Lone Wolves not otherwise revealed in the story.
Ifan ben-Mezd, the Silver Claw, explains that all those who are successfully initiated into their ranks are assigned a codename in the form of a two-word moniker. Codenames are necessary for Lone Wolves who hold active contracts to protect their true identities — they reduce the risk of exposure or retaliation if communications are intercepted, and prevent any transactions from being traced back to their origin. Arranging drop-off locations would allow supplies to be delivered discreetly, minimizing the need for direct contact between the operative and the courier, hence the secret ledger.
The implication of the ledger is that it once belonged to Baran Levere, a merchant in charge of delivering the shipments to drop-off locations specified by his clients. At least -- until he is assassinated, his entire inventory stolen, and his identity assumed by the Lone Wolf, Callo.
Clearly, the Bleeding Baron is a morbid play-on-words for Baran's bloody death, suggesting that Callo is the Bleeding Baron mentioned in the ledger. It is implied through storyline dialogue that Callo requested the shipment so he could lure his target to a more discrete location — the abandoned shack — and kill him.
In Act 2, Ifan gives the player a test to determine what their Lone Wolf name would be. He admits that he doesn't remember all of the questions, but Dusty is one of the answers, implying that the Dusty Rogue in the ledger is a Lone Wolf operative.
From the ledger, we know Stonegarden is Dusty Rogue’s specified drop-off location. Since Ryker is one of the only living beings in the Stonegarden — and a confirmed Lone Wolf — he is almost certainly Dusty Rogue.
Keeping in mind the Lone Wolf naming scheme, now that we’ve identified two-thirds of the clients in the tome are Lone Wolves, it becomes even more apparent that the ledger’s purpose is to keep a record of Lone Wolf exports, in particular. So, we can safely assume Grizzled Whisper must be the cover identity of a Lone Wolf operative, too.
If you visit the Cullwoods Mill, the Lone Wolf camp, you will notice every assassin is named with two-word monikers (i.e. Mummie Dearest, Slumberjack, Elixir Mixer, Honeyhook, etc.) -- everyone except Roost Anlon.
Since Callo is Bleeding Baron, Ryker is Dusty Rogue, and the names of all other Lone Wolves on Reaper’s Coast are known, by simple process of elimination, Grizzled Whisper must be Roost.
