I am a bit jealous of the way you paint. Do you have some tutorials or ways to improve? I love paint, I try my best, but my colors end up always muddy 🥲

here's a bunch of miscellaneous thoughts... I hope this helps!!! I've never really written tutorials before so it's a bunch of different tips collected together

whenever you see something that inspires you, save it somewhere! then look at all your inspirations every once in a while and analyze what made you like them - like certain techniques or colour usage or something. then when drawing, try to incorporate it! (i've saved finished pieces, sketches, half-done stuff, speedpaints, lots of different things as inspiration)

using more saturated midtones for shading could help in making things not look muddy (like this tutorial). of course having more desaturated colours could also be a vibe you're going for

don't be afraid to use desaturated or bolder colours!

I also love using the lasso fill tool. I don't do lineart so whenever I need to plop down a big bunch of colour (like for people) it's lasso fill time! on procreate it'd be select -> freehand -> color fill

some people will be like don't overuse blending tools and soft brushes and! while I do think it's super important to learn how to rawdog just blend things, eventually you'll find that reintroducing them into your workflow could be useful! I guess it's more of an advanced tool?

granted I just use hard brushes to blend everything anyways. if you feel like you're overusing blending/soft brushes then try using a harder textured brush, or the good ol round brush with opacity and size being controlled by pressure. or alternate between the two

my painting workflow is changing refined sketch layer to a multiply layer + making it a different colour -> underpainting colour -> lasso fill in shapes (with the underpainting) -> laying colours down at a lower opacity or with a textured brush -> sometimes using a multiply layer for quickly putting in shadows -> some minor painting under the sketch lines -> painting over everything (sometimes I merge a bunch of layers together). here's a video of a wip!

I don't know how to describe this... colour constancy... so, colours look different in different lighting conditions but the brain still recognizes them as the same local colour. one thing I had to really figure out was how to choose colours under different lighting conditions (instead of using a multiply layer for everything)(I still use multiply layers for some things though) bc I found that outright picking them made things more interesting? since style is all about your own choices. like in the above video Paradox's skin is actually a dark grey-purple and his labcoat is dark grey-blue but the brain recognizes that's a white guy with a white labcoat in a different lighting condition. uh. Color and Light by James Gurney has better explanations of this

thumbnailing colours are useful. also don't be afraid to restart your colours over and over if they don't feel right - kinda like a warmup

I like having a brush with minor colour jitter on stroke (like 3%) I can switch to for some colour variation

change your pen's overall sensitivity to be something like this so you don't have to press as hard to get to the ~100% range

get funky and experimental with it! break the rules once you've learned them!

verkomy's fun marker for sketching + textured painting

moss' sketchy sketch for some sketching

an edit of a default round brush to have a uniformed glaze rendering mode, and variable size (40%), opacity (50%), and flow (max) based on pressure. I think there's other edits too?

default soft brush for quick soft brush needs, like putting down some colours for tinting something with an overlay layer

a square-ish textured brush with 3% stroke color jitter. copied it from a CSP brush that I use (PX paint)

They pretend to be checking in on me, which is sweet, but I can see the relief in their eyes the moment they stop performing for a house full of people. They sit down and tell me things and all the while they never take their eyes off my hands.

The party has wound down and I'm still knitting and the hosts, two guys in their twenties, thank me for "helping to curate the vibe." I had no idea that's what I was doing. I leave the party having forgotten to drink anything and without that woman's number but with many rows added to my top-down raglan sweater. I call it a night, and a good one.

A new Dead on Main idea.

But...

With like matchmakers Martha and Lady Gotham.

Like no really.

Lets say Danny finds their lair/ghost home one day while exploring the Infinite Realms, becomes friends with them, goes to them when he need actual parent advice (he loves Jazz and shes great but remember she herself is still a TEEN as well, not only that but she tries to look at things in a more logical standpoint of view because she's studying psychology). He really likes them cause of how nice and caring they are towards him and enjoys spending time with them.

So when Danny gets news that apparently he needs a 'ghost spouse' because he's now the Ghost King and its 'good for the Realms' according to the council of eyeballs. He goes to Martha and Thomas to vent about how dumb it is because he can't ask his friends to fake marry him because they aren't 'ghosty' enough. (They're liminal yes but not enough apparently, they need to have actually died for it to actually count)

Martha (I head-canon she's the brains of the Wayne family, like Thomas is smart no doubt but his smarts fall into medical knowledge) reads between the lines of those wordings and comes up with a plan.

It won't only help their young King but also it may just work out more than that if done right.

She goes to ghost side of Gotham City thats in the Realms and asks to speak with Lady Gotham the city spirit, there she tells the city spirit her plans and what is happening. Lady Gotham listens and grins at the idea.

A few days later, a stressed out Danny (whose had to deal with 'suitors' the eyeballs have been sending him) is in the ghost side of Gotham City meeting Martha for some ecto-coffee and as he's waiting at the cafe/bookstore they were going to meet up at, a portal opens up and Lady Gotham herself fly's over and dumps a stunned Red Freaking Hood at the table.

She books it after that and yells "Its now up to you Martha dear! Have fun!"

Martha appears giggling in a third seat between the two stunned young adults at the table.

I have a lot of neurodivergent kids in my family. And I’ve worked with a lot professionally. And I often see their parents think the kids don’t want to connect, when they would love to — they just want to do it differently.

If they don’t like jokes and teasing, they might like silly noises or yes-and improv.

If they don’t like playing a competitive or narrative game with toys, they might like to take apart a toy, or sort/stack/line toys up, or get buried under toys.

If they don’t like biking or walking a trail in the woods ‘properly,’ they might like to walk along fallen logs, stand in the creek or look under rocks and leaves for creatures.

If they don’t like hugs and cuddles, they might like to bump shoulders, touch fingers, hand hug, spin around together, or (if they like more intense input) wrestle, push faces together, squeeze each other hard or run into you.

If they don’t like putting on kids’ music in the car or to dance to, they might want to listen to a game or show soundtrack, nature noises, a podcast, binaural beats, house music or metal.

If they don’t like animated movies where sad or scary things happen, they might like younger kids’ gentler shows, or adults’ science and history shows, or live zoo and nature cams.

And so many of them would benefit so much from the adults just slowing down. Not scheduling so much in the day, not rushing them through an activity, not stopping them playing the same song or watching the same bug for an hour, letting them absorb everything their way. Seeing it as a meditation instead of a problem. Joining them there.

And if you were one of those kids being rushed and scolded, trying to make yourself like teasing or competition or intense movies or a full social schedule — I’ve been reparenting myself and you can too. Whenever you notice something isn’t giving you joy — you can do it differently. Not everyone is forcing themselves through things they hate for “fun,” and we don’t have to.
