#really happy with how their designs came out !!!

Don’t know if this is still going on, but here’s a (kinda) quick drawing of Ink in that one haori in that post by @letsatomicbanana !

Additional notes under the cut (be warned though it’s a lot lol):

So when I saw the post I ended up reverse image searching the photo in order to see in what context this haori and hakama would’ve been worn in (though it didn't really matter in the end, as I just ended up drawing Ink painting on their sleeve). Just to like get an idea of what kinda thing I wanted to draw Ink doing in it and stuff, as well as just to get a better idea of how it’s supposed to look when worn. Now, for this specific one I’m not entirely sure, as since it seems to have been reposted on like a bajillion different websites, with many of the ones listed in the search not being in English. So needless to say, no clue where this thing came from!

However! My search wasn’t for naught! From the list of suggested links from the Google search, one was for a haori and hakama set from a rental clothing company called “Keio” (I think… keep in mind I’ve still been using google translate since the website was in Japanese lol). The specific outfit in question was this:

Now, this looks very similar to the one Banana posted, so I’m going with the assumption that the two outfits were probably made for similar purposes. Especially since not many adult haoris are made this these kinds of intricate designs (at least none that I could find). Anyways, this ensemble was listed under clothing one could rent for their child to wear for the Shichi-go-san (literally “seven-five-three” in English) Festival.

((Now quick disclaimer for the following: I am not Japanese nor any sort of expert on Japanese culture and history! As such, take the following with a grain of salt and I very much encourage you to look more into this festival on your own, as learning about this holiday was quite fun and informative and I would be 110% be happy being corrected for any misinfo, whether that be in the tags, reblogs, or any other method most preferred! Also, I've listed the websites I used here at the end of this post for y'all to check out after reading, apologies though for no footnotes.))

Continuing: During Shichi-go-san, parents bring their children of ages three, five, and seven to visit a Shinto shrine to celebrate the children’s growth and to wish or pray for good fortune. Why these ages? Glad you asked! It’s because three, five, and seven are considered auspicious ages in East Asian numerology, with this also making the date this festival is held— the 15th of November— especially lucky! It’s also interesting to note how the festival was originally exclusively done by the aristocracy and samurai families, though the tradition spread to the common people by the Edo period (1603-1868), though how the festival is currently held evolved from the Meiji era (1868-1912).

Now for the actual visit itself, traditionally five year old boys wear hakama and haori like the one pictured above (as traditionally this was the age that first allowed them to wear hakama in public), with seven year old girls going wearing a kimino with an obi (similar reasoning to the aforementioned boys; seven was the age where girls would traditionally begin wearing obi). For the three year olds? Girls may wear a hifu (a type of padded vest) and both genders seem to be able to wear hakama kimonos (take the three year olds dress stuff with a grain of salt though, not 100% sure on it lol). Also interesting to note is how in the past the age of three was the last year that parents kept their kid’s head shaved before allowing it to begin growing out more, though this practice of hair shaving seems to have fallen out of fashion around the 1800s.

In more modern times, many of these aspects are still upheld (except obviously the aforementioned hair shaving) during the Shichi-go-san festival, of now of course though with the modern addition of parents taking this opportunity to get lots of photos of their kids in formal attire lol. Additionally, parents also often get their kids some chitose-ame (longevity candy)—a type of sweet hard candy—after the shrine visit!

ANYWAYS, I just wanted to put this stuff down cause I found learning about this festival really interesting and thought it to be relevant with the whole Japanese-attire thing lol. And again, don’t be afraid to correct me on anything and/or add your own additions to the info written above!

I made Spy first… Originally they were going to be a nebulous, odd character with little to no information, but I’ve gotten attached to the idea of BLU Spy’s head being in RED Medic’s fridge…

She’s a trans girl whos deep in the closet and in fact ignores her identity and lives her life as an Italian man. It’s the 60’s and BLU Medic is scary, can you blame her? She’s maybe 45-50, and I decided to not make her related to Scout.

When I passed through New Jersey a couple years ago I had a dream of this Korean guy who like… really wanted to race and have a boxing match. That’s how I came up with this guy.

He’s maybe young 30s

Thought about her a lot. She’s a less insane/non-lead poisoned version of Soldier and I’m very happy with her. She’s heavy’s gf and they have daily fighting matches for fun!!

She’s maybe mid-30s, she probably sounds something like Temple Grandin from the show they made about her…

Partially inspired by Demo’s ‚new’ version of the TF Classic design. He’s very paranoid but serious as well. Maybe a little too serious. (I totally drew the wrong symbol on his arm pls ignore)

He’s a FAGGOT!!! Around 37 or so, always smoking and will flip up the glass on his helmet for emphasis. He is also 100% in love with the Engie

Like 4-5 years ago I had this Turkish friend who had this energy, so I took some inspiration from her!

con cryptids: a post

So, I tabled at a con this weekend and had a grand time. However, cons are ripe with cryptids, situations and events. I thought it'd be a good idea to compile some of them, because it's been quite the eventful one. Here's some of the encounters:

That one girl who asked me if I had HP merch. The excess of pride flags on my booth did not deter her, I guess.

The few people that were on my booth when that happened, also wrapped in pride flags, who did a collective grimace at the girl when she left.

Girl who lost her phone in the bathroom- I noticed it right away when entering after her, but she had already vanished the second after. I kinda awkwardly waited on the bathroom because I knew she'd notice at some point, and few minutes later, she came back crying and sobbing. She hugged me when I told her I found her phone and had been waiting for her.

This group of women in her 40s that all dressed up as the jawa (is that how it's spelled?) from Star Wars. They had little ID cards with their names, which were all puns. They had a TTRPG group together where they passed the DM torch with every session. Honestly, I look up to them

This person in an Ao Oni cosplay that consisted of a bright purple bodysuit and a very well crafted, unsettling-as-hell mask. They mostly just stood in places and stared at people without saying anything.

The people who had a sticker for Eileen (the Bloodborne plague doctor lady) to gift me when they saw me on my plague doc cosplay

This one... Very little girl. 6-7yo? She came to my booth and looked at my (many) stickers. She really liked the warlock one (it's a d20 with "warlock" written on it, with few eyes, demonic wings and a black-purple-red scheme). She did have no idea on what a warlock was, nor what was dnd, but she liked the design and asked her dad to buy it in sticker form. He thought he wanted the holographic one, and gave her money for that- But she wanted the plain one. So she bought a second sticker. She was undecided on which, and I suggested a cute little witchy black cat, since it's very popular with kids. Instead, she pointed at my Mothman sticker and went "I want this one, it scares me!"

About 10ish minutes later, this girl returned to my booth. She wanted the same warlock sticker, but now in holographic and pin format. Her dad didn't know why, but he just gave her money for them anyways.

And about half an hour later, she came back once again. This time, she... wanted the warlock charm. Which her dad was more than happy to get for her.

The endless amount of kids that come to my booth, point at my thicc yellow among us sticker, and go "omg!!! he's got a butt!!!!!!!!!!!"

The way my OFF print almost sold out this year. I never thought that the one print I made of an indie RPG maker game made by some Belgian dude 20 years ago would be my 2025 hit, but it sure was. The people who bought it were surprised by the fact I was surprised about people recognizing it. It was my most sold print, beating stuff like my Hollow Knight one by a massive mile.

People bought a bunch of my Blasphemous print too. They also all commented on names for the Penitent One that they used. Most of them don't translate well to English, but they ranged from "The Drama Guy", "The Penetrating One", or even better, "Pepe". We also joked a bunch about leaving cookies out for the Penitent One, since it's the Holy Week in Spain.

This one guy that already came to my booth last year who tried to get me to join his cult. He completely forgot he also tried that last year, for the record.

This one person who, talking about TTRPG stuff, mentioned that he played a dual character once. One of them was a bear, I think a barbarian. The other one was a woodpecker, who was an artificer. One of them played the banjo. The other one played the kazoo.

He also was currently playing a character that was a "fire baboon monk who wanted to kill god"

The endless amount of people who bought my Hornet-with-a-Clown-Wig sticker, who were very sure that "nah, Silksong AINT coming out, that was bait!"

Every single year, I manage to sell one (1) genderfluid sticker. This has remained true once again. There's always a moment of connection between me and the one designated genderfluid person who can only find a little relevant sticker on a singular booth in the entire con.

I had quite few more fun encounters, but these were kinda the main ones. All in all, a fun time- And a lot of fun oddballs to meet!

I just — I feel like Adam could look uncanny in the way Tara the singing robot does, or have a voice similar to Alan, I dunno, this is just something I wanna share, I’ll share the drawings with you if you want, idk

Hmmm, I should ask you something.. what were some of your major design points with Adam?

I'm glad to hear you had a breakthrough in your design. I'm not familiar with the video you're talking about but music is also a pretty big inspo for me in general and it's a good place to seek ideas. I'd be happy to see your drawings if you want to share them. For designing my own Adam there was a lot of trail and error. I did draw inspiration from existing depictions of the creature, the Boris Karloff version, some aspects of the Bernie Wrightson creature. I really liked the stitched lip from Robert De Niro's creature in the 1994 movie even if I hated like 90% of that film. I kind of just absorbed all the different version of the creature until I felt like I had a good grasp of the character I wanted to make and I've evolved his design over the years. Given that his mouth is limited in how much it can move I did put a lot of focus on giving him very expressive eyes. I felt like it was important to give him a lot of intensity. I also really liked the idea of his pupil being reflective and that reflective shine breaking the boundary of his eye just for a little extra drama. In colored pictures I'll add a ring of a bluish color to make the yellow more vibrant.

As far as coloring him, I stick to the foundation of the book, yellowish skin, black hair, dark lips. I do like to add touches of greens or pink to the lighting. One thing that I decided on for Adam as far as making him corpse-like was to make his skin look a little bit like it wasn't quite attached to him. Almost like he's wearing a suit or mask and you can see the "holes" around his eyes and nose where the skin is kind of broken and discolored. That was an idea that came to me while I was watching The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Seeing Leatherface with the skin mask. I felt like to Victorian/Edwardian people that would be really difficult to look at for very long.

I did want to avoid making him conventionally deformed. I feel like what makes a Frankenstein creature potentially scary is that uncanny valley factor where he looks like something that was supposed to be beautiful but then it went horribly wrong. You can't really see it in static pictures but I'm really fond of the head canon that he doesn't move quite right. He's either to jerky or too still and he doesn't blink enough. He doesn't look properly ALIVE but he's still moving around and doing things that imitate life. Even people who love him should still find him a little unsettling, I think. For a long time I was resistant to giving him lichtenberg figure scars because they are very time consuming but they look very cool so I added them anyway. The cover all of his back and shoulders and the right side of his face.

Back in Action!

I once saw @dreamweave01 say that the Woven Ties gang would get back into crime-fighting someday, and this image popped into my head and has stayed there rent free ever since. It would take time, but I really like the idea of all of them eventually healing enough to not only start vigilantism again, but also enjoy it!
