forever obsessed with dynamics between vampires, specifically that of a maker and fledgling, as a way to explore abuse. the creation of a vampire itself can so easily be a literalization of the lasting impacts of trauma and also much more simply the ways a perpetrator might shape their victim’s very identity. the extremes of isolation in the way that the new vampire, in most narratives, must cut all ties to their mortal life, or else go through an elaborate charade to maintain the facade of humanity, while forever still being removed from it. and the sheer dependence and vulnerability of being in an entirely new state of being, wholly uncertain of what it entails, and relying on another person to define… everything.
#or just the moral dilemmas#rewatching amc interview is kind of making me insane#that moment in episode two when louis is looking for a sort of assurance in the fact that lestat may actually have some good in him#look at how he cares about music look at the simple wondrous things that can bring him joy#and then the immediate dread when the opera performance turns out to be imperfect because he knows how lestat will react to *that*#I think there’s also something really interesting in the highlighting of lestat upbraids the less skilled singer before killing him#(slowly)#but also I will wait to watch more before I articulate my thoughts#vampires#interview with the vampire#amc interview with the vampire#i ramble sometimes#I do still find the lestat and claudia film and novel dynamic by far the most compelling for how she tries to usurp him but almost to be him#but I’m enjoying this#I’m very curious if I will like show claudia more on rewatch#the movie always resonated most with me (sue me lol) because there seemed to be more simultaneous fondness and attachment even at the end

wrt prev post and sam’s original ‘fed demon blood by azazel as a baby’ arc like. actually that was the most insane thing to see depicted on my television especially when it seemed like no one else i knew or followed was talking about it. it felt so explicit and yet it was sooo deep in metaphor. she walked in on us. sammy, you’re my favourite. god it must be terrible to know something happened but that you’ll never be able to remember it or tell anyone about it. never be able to rip it out or scrub it clean. so azazel could get into my nursery and- bleed in my mouth? because i wasn’t clean. these trials - they’re purifying me. anyway. augh
#sometimes i think abt how i had no idea what the hell i was getting into when i started watching supernatural#i literally didn’t know sam existed. i just knew it from tumblr as the destiel show.#i didn’t even know it was a horror show initially#i didn’t know anything i just knew there were angels and it got weird and interestingly bad and meta and god was a guy called chuck#and there was this bisexual silly guy called dean winchester with daddy issues#and he had a homophobic brother#ANGERS me. rarrgh#anyway and then somehow i still started watching. watched the pilot. kept watching. became flat out obsessed in like 3 episodes.#i think i watched most of s1 in one day#and by the end i was like. oh this is good#like. Actually Good.#and i had no reference point for spn being good in especially the specific way it was good#which was a fucked up family is hell mini horror film every episode way that i really liked#anyway then i discovered samgirl tumblr when i was on like s4. Hearing that Wish was supposed to have a Star Boy is so disappointing cause Disney could have taken advantage and made the next Jack Frost to take the internet by storm but all they wanted to do was focus on Star Plushies and the talking goat.
(Also making a Villainous couple would have been Really interesting but they’re So focused on playing it safe that they ended up shooting themselves in the foot to have one of the worst animated films of the year which is funny considering how against Nimona they were which ended up being super successful)
(Also dropping the ball So Badly that Trolls was able to surpass you is just hysterical to me)
Just sayin…
#disney wish#wish#wish concept art#shot themselves in the foot#disappointing#nimona#this is your 100th celebration film#and this is what we get?!#really#yes i have a lot of thoughts#like trolls was able to surpass you#trolls#velvet and veneer#they were actually good

The X trilogy + "psycho-biddy" influences
#x 2022#pearl#maxxxine#x series#strait-jacket#psycho#what ever happened to baby jane#horror#psycho-biddy#hagsploitation#made this whole big thing which i still might post eventually but. in terms of aesthetics. this abridged version is better lol#i'm not gonna finish the other post tonight but consider this a preview of sorts#i can't stop thinking about what if they leaned more into the 'hagsploitation' aspect of it all lol#i actually find it odd + off-putting that they start and end maxxxine with a bette davis reference#with a big significant psycho cameo at the bates motel itself#and there's not really any payoff for those allusions!!#i think if you're gonna try to tie into a legacy of older horror films you should do it in a sincere way#because that just felt like 'elevated horror' bonus points + nostalgia bait#anyway. it's fun to think about the potential it had + how all the building blocks exist within the narrative to do something interesting#and i am a 1960s hagsploitation subgenre apologist lol#what ever happened to baby jane? changed my brain chemistry the first time i watched it as a kid#so maybe i'm just nostalgia baiting myself making these connections lmao#but it could have been so good#it could have been the perfect synthesis of the shared themes across all three movies#but i don't think hagsploitation gets butts in movie theater seats like girlboss 80s nostalgia vaguely true crime related shit#oh wait also i guess calling psycho a hagsploitation movie is like. probably not 100% accurate#but it is though. it's not an inversion of the subgenre bc the subgenre didn't exist yet#but it builds up a mystery 'psycho-biddy' character only to reveal that she's not the murderer#which is also what happens in strait-jacket so i think it counts!!#+ psycho is directly referenced in all 3 movies so it’s a pretty clear influence on the trilogy as a whole

watched nimona, am a bit crushed now, but something i noticed that i found quite interesting is how she wears ‘nimona’ not just as a name, but also as an identity. it’s not just what she’s called, it’s also what she is. and, if i’m correct, ballister hardly, if ever, actually calls her by it until quite late, when he fully starts to accept her as a whole - the shapeshifting part of that whole which he loves rather than a flaw he looks past. and i think that really adds to the trans narrative of it all. it’s not just a name. it’s an integral part of who she is. and how ballister rather calls her a kid or a girl rather than that name, that identity, i think really quite reflects the really common experience of having people in your life that might not outright and purposefully show their hatred or disbelief of your identity, but who are clearly uncomfortable with it and does their best to skirt around it and to not have to acknowledge it
#i think this is a really common experience actually#specifically with parents or relatives or mentor-like figures#like they love you but your queerness is a thing they are willing to look past#rather than see as a true part of the person they love#also how ballister demands some type of explanation#how it simply being who she is isn’t enough for him#he’s unable to understand it as a part of her person#nimona#ballister boldheart#nimona film#anyways this film was so so good and it did make me sniffle a bit

personally I think the best thing that the joker sequel did for me was expose the exact degree to which how much of internet/public criticism is not based on genuine analysis of the content using social and cultural resources to support an actual argument but is actually adult children whining because someone took their batman toys and put them up on a high shelf for once and they, as a consumer, feel like they're entitled to throw a tantrum about it
#one of those 'if everyone's a critic no one will be' kind of situations#like every day I have to see 30 youtube thumbnails saying 'joker 2 bad' and then they say 'this scene was bad' and the only evidence they#give for their reasoning on it is 'it didn't make sense' and I want to turn into my english teacher and give reading comprehension question#like. if something doesn't make sense then why not examine the deeper reasoning that led you to that conclusion? why not then also entertai#the circumstances in which the situation would be plausible? you know? find some actual answers? but that is too much to ask of people#truly the gulf between a really well educated opinion analyzing the actual content rather than knee-jerking and saying 'I don't like it' is#far and fucking wide. I literally have only found ONE video essay that actually does a decent job talking about theme and the cohesion#between the two movies about the gulf between reality and fantasy which I thought was REALLY a good and thoughtful take on it all#but the rest of them are just like 'OOOOH MOVIE BAD MOVIE SO BAD'#like. you can't just say that!!! I know it's the internet and it's edged your ego enough to make you think you can#but some of us would like you to unpack your actual reasoning. but you do not have the capacity for that. clearly#go back to ninth grade for god's sake like this is a really basic skill for actually analyzing narrative and film and you do not have it#joker#folie a deux#joker 2#arthur fleck

banging my head against the wall every time I see someone reblogging a post of mine with tags mentioning the ‘unrequited confession’. we have been OVER this it is NOT a case of unrequited romantic love it is completely canonically up in the air as a possibility. listen to jayden revri himself and be enlightened i am begging you
#rambling#payneland#also getting recommended posts with this rhetoric fhdhfjdhd it’s just annoying cause it’s like. misinformation#if that scene was actually a rejection I’d feel a lot worse about this show as a whole like really it Matters that it’s not#do you really think Superhell 2: Escape From Superhell would be a good idea. because I feel like they’re actively trying to counter those#kinds of damaging or at least exhausting and overdone queer tropes#tragic unrequited gay boy hopelessly in love with his best friend suffering forever because he’s gay#is. exactly the kind of exhausting overdone queer trope that almost unequivocally makes me lose a lot of respect for a show#so it is very very very important to me that this is. not that. and the actors have cemented that fact openly#please………..please just listen to the words being said………don’t conflate uncertainty with rejection……..take my hand#that’s not to say edwin didn’t TAKE it as a rejection. because based on what he says to niko he absolutely did#which will make it all the more juicy when what he thinks is impossible starts to become real and within reach. eventually. hopefully#also- less explicit- but Charles’ hand-on-heart thing after their last hug… like you really don’t have to be a film major#(saying this as a film major) to deduce what that means and what its calling back to. it’s pretty easy to put 2+2 together there#but anyway. I digress

Marvel dudebros: “OMG, Knull is such a shit villain. He literally does nothing except sit around in a chair.”
Um… remind me. What did Thanos do when he first showed up in the MCU?
Oh that’s right. FUCK ALL!!!
#knull#venom#venom: the last dance#he’s not the most complex villain in the world but at least the film does a good job selling him as an existential threat#meanwhile this purple idiot does next to nothing over the years and keeps getting betrayed by lesser villains#before infinity snore we just had to take marvel’s word for it that he’s a really dangerous guy and we should totes be scared of him#it’s never actually presented in the films#I couldn’t give two shits about the sonyverse but I’m more interested in Knull than I ever was with thanos#Knull has a presence#thanos has a glove#sony’s spider-man universe#marvel#sony

i think light novels are really going somewhere
#this is probably where someone goes 'ashley didn't you know that Chillin In My 30s was the anime of the year last year'#'they filmed the president jacking off to it. the FBI did. for national morale. it's that good'#'that's actually the only thing they show on TV anymore. the president video I mean. that part is admittedly kind of weird'#'why is that even a power the FBI has. does this fall under their mandate'#people are always telling me about joe biden cranking his hog when i talk about anime#i'm used to it. you're nothing special#these tags really got away from me. i need to be in bed

Hopkins
a case study
(isn’t this a wonderful screenshot)
I love Hopkins sm for no real reason but he had a character arc that I love
With this analysis I am assuming three things:
Cool Guy ™️
Rich parents
Gives zero shits about school
ok starting with the third one bc idgaf
we get this from one of the first shots we see of him, when Neil is reading the j Evans Pritchard crap, and it pans across the classroom and he is staring off into the void, retaining absolutely none of what Neil is saying, which leads me to the conclusion that he really doesn’t care that much about school.
similarly he didn’t care about what grade he would get for writing the poem badly, which leads me to my second point
his parents are probably rich as hell, and he has made it his life goal to disappoint them in every way possible, in true Keefe Sencen fashion (hopefully his parents aren’t that bad tho lol). he takes pride in doing badly because it makes his parents mad, and he thinks that it is cool, which brings me to my third point
he is kinda the Cool Guy of the school, or at least one of them, and his whole thing is “too cool for school” and all that shit, specifically when they went outside and read the lines and then kicked the soccer ball, and he did minimum effort and kinda thought he was stupid. this is the first time we really notice that he’s “too cool” to try hard and then in the next class we see it again with him writing an AMAZING poem in my personal opinion, but it isn’t super deep or well thought out, and he doesn’t seem to give a shit and takes pride in it being not great, but THEN
Mr Keating does his magic. he might be slightly disappointed, but he is more supportive than anything, encouraging Hopkins to work harder and not make his work “ordinary” and in that moment Hopkins makes this face
he is disappointed in himself for not meeting Mr Keating’s expectations (that sounds super aggressive but idk how else to phrase it) and this is where we see the character development
and then at the end he stands on his desk and idk how to describe the expression on his face but it is exactly the expression I would expect him to make considering his and Mr K’s relationship
so this was the character analysis absolutely nobody asked for and is probably half wrong but who cares 👍
#there are no good screenshots for him 😭#dead poets society#dps#dps boys#dead poets fandom#dps fandom#dead poets#dead poets society fandom#fun fact#the actor who played him was a student at the actual school that it was filmed at#I thought that was really interesting lol#also I did not edit this and did zero research so it’s not that good…..

If you feel the urge to take a red pen to a story, you are REACTING to the story which is the POINT!!!!!
#most books (and especially the classics to which the tags are referring) are not meant to be passively consumed#you are SUPPOSED to have thoughts and opinions about and even DISAGREEMENTS with the text#again that is you reacting to and forming a relationship with it and that is GOOD#i just watched several films that i would LOVE to take a red pen to because i have soooooo many thoughts#and i actually enjoyed myself MORE because i was given an opportunity to think critically#and my enjoyment of the films themselves was not lessened#i’d say this is a skill issue - but it’s really more of a perspective issue#if you think that thinking about anything but the story itself while reading a story ruins it then fine#but it doesn’t have to be that way#you don’t HAVE to be a passive reader or viewer! participation is fun too!
