The Anti-Big Oof, Some May Even Say "The Small Foo"
Just played The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog today, a dumb, goofy little visual novel made for April Fool's Day a few months ago. It's really cute, it took me waaaay longer to get to it than I expected, I originally was going to read it the day it released, but uhhh i forgor💀 but now that I have actually finally read it, it's so good and was definitely worth reading. It's not very long, and there's not a ton to it, but it was created by a team of really dedicated Sonic fans including a few of the writers for the IDW comics and it is so incredibly obvious, it is absolutely filled with obscure little references to the series as a whole that only weird obsessive freaks like me would ever even notice. The number of times I went "WAOW✨" was immeasurable, the Knuckles OVA hat, "Big Oof" (classic), I think they even indirectly referenced the fucking Shadow pissing on Eggman's wife video, not 100% sure on that tho, may just be reading into it too much, but in my headcanon they're 100% referencing Shadow pissing on Eggman's wife frfr. It's crazy how the writing teams for every Sonic related thing now, the games, the comics, even the social media is just made up of a bunch people that are just as obsessed with Sonic as even the most insane fans, like the last 10 years of Sonic media has pretty much just been a collection of officially licensed fan passion projects and I'm all for it. Like obviously there's been the typical corporate made stuff that was obviously just rushed out for money and had no love behind it too, just like any franchise, but like, I'm not here to talk about that, I don't want to talk about that, I'm here to talk about PURE, RAW, UNFILTERED PASSION AND HOW FUCKING COOL IT IS!!!
The Sonic community in general is just insane in how passionate they are, like what other community has multiple entire expos dedicated to fangames, that have been recognized by major members of the official Sonic development team? (If you can't tell I am very excited for SAGE and SHC, the next 2 months are gonna be so pog >:)).
It's so exceptionally fun experiencing any kind of work in general that's so clearly made with a ton of passion put into it. Like art that you can just sense the passion oozing out of has got to be like, peak art, always, no matter the actual thing itself, if it's been made with a ton of love, it's peak, no question. It's why there's a lot of specific artists and communities that I just resonate with so hard, like when an artist or community just loves what they make, that's just like, so cool this is my excuse to mention Trigger/Gainax I love Trinax I love it when they have to make the final episode of an anime black and white and at 2fps not only for stylistic reasons but because they just HAD to put their entire budget into the 2 minute big robot scene like how could they resist and I mean this entirely unironically I fucking LOVE that they know exactly where their talents and passions lie and are willing to put everything into what they want to make at the expense of other parts that they don't want to make. Remember when in Promare Galo starts ranting about like ancient firefighters or some shit in the middle of a fight and it was basically just a stand-in for the writers wanting to rant about ancient firefighters or some shit? yea, that was cool. Remember when in Promare they kis-
Also I don't know where to put this but I want to say it because I thought of it, but references aren't just cool because you get the reference they're making, references are cool because they can show a clear love of the thing they're referencing, and that's why Sonic is cool ok bye :)
Tumblr media
The fact that this game is the 2nd time they've referenced the Peter Griffin death pose in official Sonic media is honestly very concerning.

First Impression: “Full Metal Panic!”
An earlier version of this post was published on Facebook on January 19, 2018.
Since the original post was made, I finished watched the whole original series, and also the very silly “Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu”, the first of its several sequels.  Over the course of this year, this has gone from “what is this, I’ve barely even heard of it and it doesn’t look promising” to one of my favorite media franchises.  I don’t know why it tends to take me so long to sit down and try out other people’s recommendations, because they so often turn out to be good!  Wikipedia tells me there are two more anime TV serieses, one OVA, and three movies, so I guess I’d better go watch those, too...
Paul is Weeaboo Trash; or, Paul Reviews Things Based on Four Episodes and a Quickie (1 part bourbon to 1 part light rum to 1/4 part orange liqueur, mix with ice, strain).
Today: Full Metal Panic! (2002)
In a world only slightly different from our own, a paramilitary group called Mithril, dedicated to fighting drug manufacturers and terrorists, embarks on... the world's worst undercover operation. A three-person team is dispatched to Tokyo to surveil and protect Kaname Chidori, a high school girl who they fear will be abducted and experimented on by the KGB. They all seem to have different and, er, interesting ideas of "undercover". Kurz Weber thinks "undercover" means hitting on and getting drunk with high schoolers and stopping a truck by making it crash into his mecha. Sousuke Sagara thinks it means enrolling at the target's school without creating a cover story (immediately disclosing his rank and previous places of service while introducing himself), bringing guns to school, and assaulting a teacher. Melissa Mao thinks it means actually doing surveillance from a distance and coordinating with their base (not to mention being smart enough to take cover when she briefly thinks Weber is an intruder); being actually good at her job, she therefore gets very little screen time.
They somehow manage to not raise any alarms, however, and they technically succeed: Kaname is not abducted by the KGB.  Instead she's abducted by terrorists apparently working for a tiny fictional country in Siberia.
Oops.
The premise of this show is a little bit ridiculous, but no more so than a lot of other shows. And significantly less so than other shows based on comics involving paramilitary vigilante armies I could name. It's pretty weird that they keep referring to Mithril as "mercenaries" when it's not clear who, if anyone, has hired them, and it sounds like Mithril itself embarks on at least some missions just because they think it's the right thing to do, which is pretty un-mercenary-like.
As outlined above, the men in the main cast are kind of dumb, but the women aren't, and I actually like them all so far. I will definitely keep watching this. Thank you to my wife for making me try it.  If I weren’t so knee-jerk contrarian about other people’s media recommendations, maybe I would’ve gotten to this sooner.
-----
W/A/S scores: 2/3?/4
Weeb: Other than mechas, there's really nothing here that would be at all out of place for people familiar with American media.
Ass: There are a couple of scenes of the kind of sex comedy you might expect from any Japanese show involving "clueless new student at a high school", but the sexual content is overall pretty rare and not explicit. So far, anyway, hence the "?". I dunno, the show swings from goofy to serious pretty hard, so it seems like it could go into fanservice land eventually.  (Followup: it doesn’t.  It actually veers quite far from high school sex comedy into action dramedy.)
Shit: Nothing spectacular in the art or writing, but also nothing that seems inconsistent, rushed, or sloppy to me.  Other than, you know, this is nominally supposed to be an undercover operation.
-----
Stray thoughts:
- No, seriously, this is the worst undercover operation ever. "The Japanese government must not find out about this," they're told before they deploy. Well, they will now, or else the Japanese government is astoundingly incompetent.
- Fun fact: despite containing Panic! and being made in the 2000s, this show does not, in fact, take place at any discos.  (ha! ha! ha! wow this joke is bad)

x @frogopera I didn’t wanna spam your inbox so here’s a list of recs, there’s anime in there as well bsjskqjdrjejqjr anyone is open to reblog this tho idc think of it as my official rec list pff tf t if you have any triggers I’d be happy to go through and let you know if they have them
Bojack Horseman: you’ve possibly already seen this but I would do a disservice if I didn’t include it. It’s genuinely the best animated series I have ever had the joy of watching and the pinnacle of adult animation. It’s inclusive, smart, very heavy and bojack is…he the kind of main character you don’t wanna relate to but you will • tw for drug and alcohol abuse, mentions of and implications of child abuse, and homophobia (gay character is fired and contracts prostate cancer ), and slight pedophilia ( bojack almost drunkenly sleeps with a teenager, technically legal in that state and she was sober but ewe no to the shows credit it’s painted as a BAD thing )
Home: the adventures of oh and tipp it’s a 2d animated series based around the dreamworks movie and it’s actually incredibly cute fun decompression stuff • tw for transphobia I think? they make some jokes about the alien races genders and like…..I can’t tell if it’s a transphobic joke or trying to teach kids pronoun usage tbfh
The batman idk how you feel about superhero stuff but the batman is a pretty stylish and interesting take in batman mythos and the art style is that kind of awkward but captivating and interesting. it really stands out if that makes sense
my little pony: equestria girls movies: okay hear me out, they’re actually pretty good ( so is the show in my frank opinion but the movies are a good jumping on point ) the movies take place in a more human world and rainbow rocks is legitimately fucking awesome with kick ass music and they’re all S U P E R gay with butch lesbian supreme sunset shimmer
the tinker bell movies: they’re centered around a whole world of fairies and like I’m psure they might not be 2d animation but they’re honestly worth a watch, just pure and fun.
lolirock:
cute french based cartoon about three magical pop star princesses and it was the show everyone was excited about because there’s a black magical girl. it’s just super beautiful and sweet and bubblegum but it’ll get you in the heart too
Glitter force:
it’s one of the few precure anime we dubbed and it just …. it’s silly and kinda dumb but if you just want pure cotton candy and sparkles this is the anime for you. the main girl has a deep love of fairy tails and happy ever after like 💕💕
Winx:
again a little shallow seeming and the art style takes some getting used to but it’s a big organic world of magic and wonder that will draw you in and genuinely surprise you in some places
Horseland:
it’s a pretty diverse show about a bunch of young girls and their magic talking horses they don’t know can talk. it’s again more feel good kid stuff but it tackled native cultural appropriation and litterly called out the white girl wearing native headdress so it gets bonus points from me
the last unicorn:
*clutches chest* it’s just beautiful and amazing okay
justice League / justice League unlimited:
both fairly awesome superhero series that helped start the dcau and are just fucking brilliantly written and still hold up today
batman beyond:
this show is dated af and is about future batman in the fuuuture man sjjzjqjejriejr it’s super great though and is just a nice take on a young batman still balancing school and life
the goofy movie
just a really nice hilarious movie that gets a lot more on the nose the older you get plus I’m still not over Roxanes character design it’s really aces
Balto;
again a lot of my love for this movie comes from its animation but it’s a pretty heartwarming story about what someone can achieve for those they love
I’m sneaking in Wendy wu homecoming warrior despite it being live action because it’s an actually fascinating Disney movie with a really cool mythos and ACTUALLY HAS A PREDOMINANTLY ASIAN CAST go figure sjsjsjdje
Atlantis:
I have a deep love for this movie and it doesn’t get near the recognition it deserves. it subverts the damsel in distress trope without being patronizing about it. we get a lovable scrawny nerd that’s actually respectful of the cultures he studies and his goddess of a future wife and like it was a movie written by mostly white people that managed to portray a tribal element without seeming racist
lucha Libre and really cute oft forgotten cartoon about latinx children in training to become luchadors like their parents
ao no exorcist:
is a really intense anime with catholic themes that really goes deep into the concept of nature vs nurture and has a pretty gay coded protagonist and focuses more on his familial relationship with his brother and the strain it’s gone under vs his possible romances
ruroni Kenshin and samurai champloo are good old classic anime if you’re looking for that old school feudal Japan feeling and adventure and rag tag looser building a family
K is a pretty fascinating anime in that if I explained too much I’d ruin the fun of discovering it yourself tho hey more queer coding
detective conan is a fucking awesome mystery anime but at like eight billion episodes and counting I wouldn’t worry too much about it sjajhdejskkf
Karneval is a really cute and funny, pretty anime following a sweet amnesiac child as he joins the circus to find the one he loves, and yes more queer coding like haRD
yu yu hakusho:
literally my favorite anime ever in existence and I’ll just keep this short it follows a demon hunter as life continues to screw him over and he survives
assassination classroom:.
is actually a very weirdly heartwarming story about a bunch of kids tasked to assassinate their teacher ( I swear it’s weirder than it sounds ( but it’s definitely not a book to be judged by its cover
Majin tentai nogami neuro: is a very interesting and in depth murder mystery anime about a demon who literally eats mysteries and enlists the help of a human girl to open up a detective agency. warning tho shit gets DARK near the end
petshop of horrors:
this is an ova series so it’s just a couple episodes but it’s a hauntingly creepy and fun look and an eccentric pet shop owner that offers his clients … dubious pets that would be fine if these guys would just follow the rules of ownership he gives them
xxxholic:
again kind of a mystery anime but with far more magic and I’m pretty positive it’s canon one of the male characters is unrequitely in love with the main guy, and the art style is definitely an aquired taste but it’s worth it
death parade:
THIS SHIT GAVE ME A CRISIS OF SELF AFTER FINISHING IT, DO NOT LET TYE HAPPY INTRO FOOL YOU IT’S OUT FOR YOUR BLOOD AND TEARS YOU WILL FUCK CRY

Tag!~
RULES: Always post the rules. Answer the questions asked, then write 11 new ones. Tag 11 people to answer your questions, as well as the person who tagged you.
Thank you for the tag, @ladywiltshire! ♥♥♥
1. Do you remember your first time watching or reading Fullmetal Alchemist? What was your first impression? I do remember! I was sitting on the couch playing a gameboy game while waiting for Inuyasha to come on (lol) and the first episode of FMA 03 started playing on adult swim. I kept looking up from my game to see what was happening cause it seemed pretty interesting. Since my attention was torn between the show and my game, I don’t really remember what my initial feelings were about it. My first impression was probably something like “huh, this is kinda cool.” Never could have imagined that it would go on to have such a HUGE impact on my life.
2. Tell us about The Fave™
/CRACKS KNUCKLES So if my icon and url and rambling tags that stretch on forever didn’t get the message across, my favorite character is Ling. Just about anyone who knows me here (or among my close friends irl) know how much I love Ling. He’s cute and funny and could easily be passed off as the goofy comic relief but he’s so much more than that.  He’s determined and loyal and he’ll do whatever it takes to claim the throne for himself. Not out of a desire for power simply to have it, but because that power is the key to securing a safe future for his clan. I just love and admire him so much, and I can only hope that some of his princely wisdom and compassion rub off on me u v u
3. Do you have a favorite fanwork? Fanfics? Comics? I have many faves! Just to name a few: - siruoa’s Emperor’s New Clothes amv which is beautifully animated with gorgeous art. A must see! - Nothing Gold; an EdLing fic that reads like a novel and crushes the heart like an anvil to the chest - The Roommate Agreement; a fic about Ling and Greed in a modern day setting with a bit of a supernatural twist - Blunt Force Trauma; a fic that plays out so vividly in the mind as you’re reading that it may as well be animated by BONES (oh, if only) GreedxDolcetto, DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDDOS
4. Hit me with an analysis/opinion you have on the series or characters! I love the characters. All of them. While I have read that some find this to be a fault, I think that one of the absolute best things about FMA is the attention that every character receives. Every character gets a moment to shine. Even if they only show up for a couple chapters, they somehow manage to completely steal your heart. If even the side characters can be so lovable and such a delight to see, it’s no wonder that the main characters are so well developed and why they warrant such love and adoration from the fans. Hiromu Arakawa pulls this off beautifully.
5. Tell us about a project you have going on! Or if you don’t have one, maybe something you’ve always wanted to write or draw? I wouldn’t consider it so much a concrete, singular project. But I am always developing my own interpretation of Xing. It’s my baby. I have about twenty or so OC’s as a part of it- from the court officials to the royal wives to the citizens of Xing’s many provinces. I’ve written quite a bit about it with a dear friend of mine, but I feel that there’s always room for improvement! ‘ v ‘
6. Favorite opening/ending number and why? This is SO HARD. I can’t pick just one because I love them all for different reasons. So for now I’ll say my fave opening is Ready Steady Go. It takes me back to my early days in the FMA fandom and makes me so nostalgic. Fave ending number would be Motherland by Crystal Kay. I play it so much. It’s such a sweet, pretty song and I love the lyrics. (Plus the animation that goes with it is adorable! <3)
7. Tell me about a scene that really touched you or made you realize something about yourself. A scene that really touched me was the scene where Edward is in the Gate and he promises Alphonse that he’ll come back for him. You think that’s it’s going to be this cruel tease and that a glimpse is all the brothers get of one another but then Edward breaks through and calls out to Alphonse and GOD, the scene just ruins me.  Edward and Alphonse have such an amazing relationship and it’s so touching to see the brothers so devoted to one another.
8. OTPs! Who are they? Why are you WEAK FOR THEM? Edling’s got me WEAK. This pairing has a very special place in my heart because it’s a big part of how I actually met my best friend. But even on it’s own, Edward and Ling have a great relationship together. Even with just the friendship we see in the series, they come to care for one another greatly and there are just so many precious moments between them. Like Edward’s concern for Ling when Greed takes over his body, or the way he goes back for him when they’re stuck in Gluttony. They’re just a couple of dumb teenagers in love and I love it. GreedxLing is my damn aesthetic and I will never get enough of it. These two are so similar and yet so different and that’s what makes them mesh together so well. I always think about that scene during the attack on Central when they couldn’t tell if it was Ling or Greed in control because they were so in tune with one another. These two learn a lot from one another and seeing their relationship play out with each other gets me every time ;   ;
9. Funniest headcanon you’ve ever seen. Go! Trust exercises at Fort Briggs involving Captain Buccaneer trust falling onto soldiers half his size I’ll leave the results to your own imagination
10. What spurred you to join the fandom? I dunno if there was a particular moment where I “joined”, per se?? I’ve been around since ye olden days of quizilla and lemons and the FMA Banana Phone amv.
11. Have a fandom meltdown here and tell me why you love your fandom or show/comic so much! BOY, I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS I’ve been a fan of this series for so long. (To the point where I hardly remember who I was as a person before it???) It’s become practically synonymous with my identity in that everyone who knows me knows how much I love it. It’s so much more than “my favorite anime.” It’s what has been at my side growing up, my support in times of strife, and my biggest inspiration. I can say with absolute certainty that it has helped shape me into the person I am today, and that I am able to thank it for all the amazing friends I’ve made and the amazing experiences I’ve enjoyed throughout my life.  I truly don’t know where I’d be without FMA and I’m so glad that I still have the lovely people still participating in this fandom to interact with on a daily basis. I feel so blessed to be a part of this miraculously thriving community.
Yay, this was fun! And so very thought provoking too! Though I feel like I wrote a lot, lol And now I tag: @mollymerula | @captbuccaneer | @mellorad | @tiactus | @segaphantom | @lieutenant-sarcastic (Only if you’d like to, ofc. Please don’t feel pressured in any way! ‘ v ‘ )
Here are my questions for you! 1. How were you first introduced to Fullmetal Alchemist? 2. Tell us all about your child your favorite character and why you love them to pieces! 3. What are some funny FMA moments that get you every time? 4. What is your favorite fight scene from the series?  5. If you could make an FMA OVA, what would it be about? 6. Do you have any of your own FMA headcanons? Tell us about them! 7. Who is your favorite homunculus and why? 8. Do you have a favorite FMA au? If not, what’s an au you’d like to see or have come up with? 9. If you could live anywhere in the FMA-verse, where would you live? 10. Which FMA character do you identify with the most?  11. Why do you love Fullmetal Alchemist? What does it mean to you? Tell me everything! Go nuts! BE FREE, MY CHILD
