Literally my day today has been explaining to clients that they did not get a full understanding of a complex area of law from a Google search.

So I started a D&D game at my law firm.

Its on pause as I study for the bar and I miss the disasters that are my players. 

Also. Magically, I somehow convinced my firm to pay for the pizza and other dinner we order and eat while we play at the office. 

I dont know how I did this. I do know that this has been the single thing that has made me feel at home at my new job.

Anyway back to the hell hole that is bar prep, just felt the need to share.

Just tried cooking tofu in a cast iron skillet for the first time and almost IMMEDIATELY started a grease fire. I put it out and then called the non emergency line to have the fire dept check everything, but if that isn’t an allegory for law school and 1L, idk what is. Better not be an omen for 2L.

On being a lawyer

[Year One]

Things they didn't tell you about becoming a lawyer:

1. The constant dry cleaning bills and the need to have the perfect bra that is flesh toned and seamless and never appears under any form of blouse ever and is only sold at Nordstrom.

2. The monotony of the work that you do day in and day out.

3. That simultaneous to that monotony is the feeling that your life is in flux. Friends you had you can't relate to anymore. Friends from law school you can relate to become drones consumed with billable hours and their career trajectory.

4. That you become consumed with your career trajectory. Every project is about what it teaches you to take on the next project, the next client, the next obligation. You can't ever just be still, or absorb the information being thrown at your eyeballs at the speed of light from your LED computer screen.

5. The unsettled feeling that having your life be all at once in flux and monotonous leaves you.

6. That no one is thinking about you. No one. Is thinking. About you. No one is making sure you're getting meaningful work, being trained, or doing anything that develops your skills.

7. That you are not likely to be surrounded by people your age ever again.

8. How to own that you earned your place in your lawfirm, without being crass or indignant. How to convey your own intelligence without dismantling the comments or confidence of your surperiors.

9. How to acknowledge, make time for, and nurture all the parts of you that are not "lawyer"....

10. That on the bad days, when you've worked like a dog, bled trough more tampons than you can count sitting at your desk to close a deal, can't remember your last meal, but are somehow the happiest you've ever been, and you ask "if not this, what?" And the voice in your head is silent - this is meant for you.
