Reading group for beginners!

I want to start reading! But I want t read in a group! I want to find people that would be willing to read on a video call together!

I’m part of a small book group and we meet once a month to talk about whatever book we’ve been reading. There’s no set book be read, no set timeframe, and that’s why I love it. The group is very informal, friendly and a lovely eclectic mix of readers. Last week we had a little gathering at the home of one of our members, a chance for all of us to get to know each other a little better. The day was horribly windy and a bit chilly but we managed to sit outside under this beautiful tree and chatted, while sipping tea and sharing our lunch plates. I had recently finished making some crocheted bunting and everyone agreed it looked lovely strung up under the tree. Just for once no-one talked about books :)

Book Review #1

Initially I would have given this book a 3/10, but later raised it to a 5/10 when I realized the importance of the parts of the story I had questioned.

Age range: Young adult+

Review:

Part of the reason I didn’t enjoy the story as much, was because I felt that the title and the description were different than the actual premise of the story. Maybe I didn’t catch it, but I also feel it should have been more obvious? It didn’t seem that Gracie had large secret, rather she found out in an interesting way about Ella’s dead baby. (What I would have preferred was Gracie overheard Ella talking about the child and Gracie piecing it together or talking about it in a series of questions to Jennifer & the Father). It didn’t seem the kind of secret I was expecting, anyways, or to be revealed in the way I was hoping, though I do admit it was fairly clever how everything unraveled.

My other issue was that it went back and forth about religious things and added a bit of mature content I wasn’t expecting, though I’m thankful it was brief. I don’t agree with all of the conclusions they jumped from, but this is the point that made me give it a 5 instead of a 3. We do not all agree about certain things, and to be honest, we may all question things, including our own beliefs, our eyes and our perception.

I also loved the small details in the seeming “mundane” things. For some reason that’s one of my favorite parts of stories. Possibly because that’s the reality of life? Finding enjoyment in the little things.

The last issue I had was the entire ending. Matt going nuts and killing off Jennifer? Yes I was feeling at the end of the book, “Matt made her happy, what will she do without him?” But that’s saying her whole happiness would have depended on him, which isn’t true either. Yet, I think it could have ended better for Jennifer. And what of Ella? She would never have to reveal to Richard that she had a child who happened to be the child of Jennifer’s psycho-now dead boyfriend? Just concluding it with “they were a happy little family” didn’t sit well with me.

#7booksin7days 📚 Day 7 | Book 7: Having highlighted the general history of the gothic literary tradition over the last 6 "days"*, I will end this challenge with my current read: 'Suttree' (1979), by Cormac McCarthy. Born in 1933 in America, McCarthy writes across genres including Western, post-apocalyptic, and Southern Gothic. 'Suttree' was selected for a group buddy read, organised by @axe_for_frozen_sea, so I'm ~actually~ not going to say anything specific about it - for fear of spoiling it and for lack of knowledge so early on in the narrative. All I will say is that it is pure poetry; McCarthy twists, turns, breaks, and reappropriates language, creating images beautiful, bleak, and unsettling in their proximity to what we're used to reading. I'd read that 'Suttree' is semi-autobiographical, and Southern Gothic, but the latter is clear from the very first paragraph (pictured above; I'll add a close up in stories). 🍂: As we creep ever closer to Halloween, a personal tradition of mine is to gather natural objects & bring outdoor autumn in (as evidenced by the multitudinous pinecones gathering round to see what I'm reading) 🌍💚. 🤔: What are you doing to prepare?
