#7booksin7days š Day 6 | Book 6: It's all sounding rather biblical now (hail Satan), but on the 6th day I giveth unto thee the Southern Gothic, of Urban Gothic, which is itself weighty with the religious tradition & history of the American south. Following the Romantics, the Victorians, the early Americans, and the Urban Gothic (which is temporally located within, and there for a subset of, Victorian Gothic), the Southern Gothic is an American Gothic subgenre directly influenced by the trends of the European Urban Gothic. The terror is firmly rooted within the land, the home, the family, the blood... There are no monsters of myth, just the horrors and hardships of brutal reality. Today's specific title is an absolute favourite of mine (as it is tradition to share for the #7booksin7days challenge), that I unfortunately did not have to hand. Instead I took 2 different books (1 novel, 1 collection of short stories) by the same author for a walk through the cemetery - a pastime I now know many of you share with me š¤ (thanks to so many of you for voting on my recent story!). Writing from the 1920s until his death, master of the Southern Gothic, William Faulkner (1897-1962), was particularly prolific during the 30s. I've discussed the particular text on the Generally Gothic blog before, and the title is included in the list of works in the second image (š), along with clues pertaining to the plot in both images. šµļø: Any guesses? Which Faulkner text do the surroundings point to? š: Link to Faulkner blog post in bio! As always I'd love to hear your thoughts if you read it! š·ļø: @_diary_dear_diary_ and @axe_for_frozen_sea, would you like to join in and share - or simply think about - #7booksin7days (no worries if not!)? . #generallygothic #gothic #thetraditionofterror #terror #horror #gothicliterature #gothicnovel #gothicfiction #americanliterature #englishliterature #williamfaulkner #faulkner #southerngothic #southerngothicliterature #gothicgenre #cemetery #cemeteryphotography #autumn #fall #books #bookstagram #booknerd #academic #spookynerd #blogger #bookworm #religion #hailsatan #americansouth https://www.instagram.com/p/B3aqZ7fggYl/?igshid=1q54qjzx38rf3

#7booksin7days š Day 7 | Book 7: Having highlighted the general history of the gothic literary tradition over the last 6 "days"*, I will end this challenge with my current read: 'Suttree' (1979), by Cormac McCarthy. Born in 1933 in America, McCarthy writes across genres including Western, post-apocalyptic, and Southern Gothic. 'Suttree' was selected for a group buddy read, organised by @axe_for_frozen_sea, so I'm ~actually~ not going to say anything specific about it - for fear of spoiling it and for lack of knowledge so early on in the narrative. All I will say is that it is pure poetry; McCarthy twists, turns, breaks, and reappropriates language, creating images beautiful, bleak, and unsettling in their proximity to what we're used to reading. I'd read that 'Suttree' is semi-autobiographical, and Southern Gothic, but the latter is clear from the very first paragraph (pictured above; I'll add a close up in stories). š: As we creep ever closer to Halloween, a personal tradition of mine is to gather natural objects & bring outdoor autumn in (as evidenced by the multitudinous pinecones gathering round to see what I'm reading) šš. š¤: What are you doing to prepare? (* I've broken pretty much all the rules - I've not always posted covers, I added full-length captions and, I know, I took more than 7 days... Thanks for bearing with! If you fancy playing along, whether I've specifically invited you or not - all are welcome! - I encourage you to break whichever rules make it more fun, or manageable, to join in, too.) . #generallygothic #gothic #thetradtionofterror #terror #horror #gothicfiction #gothicliterature #englishliterature #americanliterature #cormacmccarthy #suttree #southerngothic #southerngothicliterature #buddyread #readinggroup #academic #spookynerd #halloween #tradition #fall #autumn #nature #pinecone #kindle #bookstagram #books #bookquote #literary #bookworm https://www.instagram.com/p/B3dbjBbAUvc/?igshid=3hny58js6x9m

#7booksin7days * š Day 4 | Book 4 Died this day, 1849 (b. 1809) the first true author of the American Gothic, Edgar Allan Poe. The book pictured is actually a collection of essays by H. P. Lovecraft; in terms of Poe's most influential or seminal Gothic text... I'm torn! It's impossible to ignore the place of 'The Raven' (1845) within the history of poetry, or 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue' (1841) as the birth of the detective story, or 'The Fall of the House of Usher' (1839), or 'The Masque of the Red Death' (1842)...! But my very first taste of the Gothic, around the age of 7, was 'The Tell-Tale Heart' (1943); it forever holds a place in my own, and it really is incredibly good. š: I have 3 blog posts on Poe at generallygothic.com/blog - 'A Brief and Tragic Biography', 'Dissecting The Tell-Tale Heart', and 'Gustave DorĆ©ās Illustrated Poe'. There's a link to the last(, which contains links to the first two at the end) in my bio. š: Head to stories to read what Lovecraft wrote about our dearly beloved Poe. š¤: Does anyone else doodle on their books, or is it just me?! And look: I took Poe out amongst the pumpkins; am I a real bookstagrammer now? š·ļø: @posthumous.dreams and @spookyfiendsbc, fancy joining in and sharing #7booksin7days (no pressure!)? *Or 8 days, or however many damn days it takes me! . #generallygothic #gothic #thetraditionofterror #terror #horror #horrorfiction #gothicliterature #gothicnovel #gothicfiction #edgarallanpoe #poe #americangothic #americanliterature #literaryhistory #thetelltaleheart #theraven #murdersintheruemorgue #thefallofthehouseofusher #themasqueofthereddeath #shortstories #weirdfiction #hplovecraft #criticaltheory #literarytheory #bookstagram #spookynerd #books #pumpkin https://www.instagram.com/p/B3V64juAHeT/?igshid=134tbpl1f8v8e

#7booksin7days š Day 3 | Book 3: 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' introduced mortality & the supernatural, and 'Frankenstein' introduced science & monstrosity to the Gothic canon (see posts for days 1 & 2 below š). Today's seminal Gothic text isĀ Irish author Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'Ā (1897), which can be read as a discussion of race and politics and, though by no means the first to do so, is a clear example of the genre's ability to discuss importantĀ orĀ taboo socio-political subjects through the metaphor of horror and monsters. Whilst considered a trashy rebellion against works of great intellectual worth at its birth, the Gothic is now studied seriously by scholars. Texts like 'Dracula'Ā have endless worth because of their ability to be readĀ (or their meaning interpreted)Ā in a variety of ways. Is it about history, politics, race, religion? Does Count Dracula represent murderous Romanian ruler Vlad the Impaler, a Jewish victim of racism,Ā or contemporary fears of disease and interracial mixing? As the most famous introduction to the vampire it also demonstrates the Gothic tradition of revisiting narratives and creatures created by others. š¤: Who is your favourite gothic character? Are they an original or based on/inspired by an earlier text? Is context important to you, or is a good ol' story enough to capture your interest? š·ļø: I forgot (the tradition) to tag anyone yesterday, so today I'll invite @inia_gwath and @devon_isadevon to join in with #7booksin7days if they fancy it (no pressure!). . #generallygothic #gothic #thetraditionofterror #terror #horror #gothicliterature #gothicgenre #gothicfiction #englishliterature #booknerd #bookstagram #bookworm #books #academic #spookynerdĀ #history #literaryhistory #dracula #bramstoker #bramstokersdracula #vampire #vladtheimpaler #race #politics #religion #literarycontext #contextualanalysis #literarycriticismĀ https://www.instagram.com/p/B3QE4xigWqa/?igshid=1qjj3l2c3a8b0

š Day 2 | Book 2 for #7booksin7days. I'm sure all of you here are familiar with Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein', and my love for it, but objectively it is a fundamental work within the Gothic genre. Originally published in 1818, the novel was the product of a writing challenge between friends during a stormy summer holiday by lake Geneva, Switzerland, two years earlier. In 1831, Shelley revised and republished the novel. Whilst the plot was largely unchanged, the later narrative has 4 main differences. 1. The first chapter is expanded & divided into two, altering the total number of chapters. 2. Elizabeth's backstory reveals her to be an orphan unrelated to Victor, avoiding increasing public dissaproval of marriage between cousins. 3. Victor explains his understanding of electricity & galvanism through a description of a tree struck by lightning and a visit from a scientist friend. 4. The narrative voice is more obviously positioned against Victor, morally, in response to harsh contemporary criticism of the original version. Many versions, like this beautiful and recently acquired second-hand collection, include the introductions to both editions, but the original 1818 edition, favoured by academics, is the only one I've read in full. š¤: What do you think about edited novels? Does one have greater authority over the other? Which edition, if either, have you read, and if neither, which would you be more inclined to read? š: I wrote a blog post on 'Frankenstein' a while ago, which I have shared before. I'll put the link in my bio in case you've not checked it out. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you do read it! . #generallygothic #gothic #thetraditionofterror #terror #horror #horrorfiction #gothicliterature #englishliterature #gothicnovel #gothicfiction #maryshelley #maryshelleysfrankenstein #frankenstein #bookworm #booknerd #bookstagram #spookynerd #academic #sciencefiction #blogger #blogpost #wordpress #secondhandbooks #hardbackbooks #collection https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Oh7_bAe9y/?igshid=7iw40ripwp5c

Generally Gothic's šThe Traditions of Terrorš series will cover a whole host of different topics, from the traditions of the literary movement to rites and rituals across the globe. For the first week of posts, I will also be loosely following the #bookstagram tradition of hashtag challenges, because @spookysistersread (thank you! š¤) challenged me to join in with #7booksin7days. The hashtag says it all... but captions are disallowed. I will be breaking that rule, and posting 7 seminal texts that set the traditions of the gothic literary mode. šBook 1|Day 1: As today is #nationalpoetryday in the UK, I will begin with English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge's (1772-1834) 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' (1798). Historically categorised as a work of Romanticism - a European poetic movement born of the intellectual Enlightenment at the Fin-de-SiĆØcle - this epic poem, written in ballad form, undoubtedly paved the way for future gothic tropes. I am not alone in classifying Coleridge as a Gothicist; 'The Rime...' features characters Death and Life-in-Death, mental & physical struggles and othering, the latter three of which are perputated by the narrative framework. Okay, for a 'caption-free' post, that's probably enough...š¤« š¤Have you read 'The Rime'? If not, what's your favourite generally gothic poem? . #generallygothic #gothic #thetraditionofterror #terror #horror #gothicliterature #gothicgenre #gothicfiction #englishliterature #booknerd #bookstagram #bookworm #books #academic #spookynerd #samueltaylorcoleridge #coleridge #romantics #romanticism #poetry #therimeoftheancientmariner #enlightenment #findesiecle #history #literaryhistory #lyricalballads #C19th #nineteenthcentury #19thcentury https://www.instagram.com/p/B3K7VjcgJ8P/?igshid=avisvylr4te4
