Generally Gothic's 🎃The Traditions of Terror🎃 series will cover a whole host of different topics, from the traditions of the literary movement to rites and rituals across the globe. For the first week of posts, I will also be loosely following the #bookstagram tradition of hashtag challenges, because @spookysistersread (thank you! 🖤) challenged me to join in with #7booksin7days. The hashtag says it all... but captions are disallowed. I will be breaking that rule, and posting 7 seminal texts that set the traditions of the gothic literary mode. 📚Book 1|Day 1: As today is #nationalpoetryday in the UK, I will begin with English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge's (1772-1834) 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' (1798). Historically categorised as a work of Romanticism - a European poetic movement born of the intellectual Enlightenment at the Fin-de-Siècle - this epic poem, written in ballad form, undoubtedly paved the way for future gothic tropes. I am not alone in classifying Coleridge as a Gothicist; 'The Rime...' features characters Death and Life-in-Death, mental & physical struggles and othering, the latter three of which are perputated by the narrative framework. Okay, for a 'caption-free' post, that's probably enough...🤫 🤔Have you read 'The Rime'? If not, what's your favourite generally gothic poem? . #generallygothic #gothic #thetraditionofterror #terror #horror #gothicliterature #gothicgenre #gothicfiction #englishliterature #booknerd #bookstagram #bookworm #books #academic #spookynerd #samueltaylorcoleridge #coleridge #romantics #romanticism #poetry #therimeoftheancientmariner #enlightenment #findesiecle #history #literaryhistory #lyricalballads #C19th #nineteenthcentury #19thcentury https://www.instagram.com/p/B3K7VjcgJ8P/?igshid=avisvylr4te4
