I always think about their matching tattoos and how you don’t just DO THAT over and over and over again unless your love and commitment for each other is seriously on another level. Like I personally can’t imagine ever doing that for/with another person. It makes me wonder why some people wouldn’t think they’re in it for the long haul when they so clearly are.

Like... Louis didn't even want any tattoos when Harry and him met. BAM, 2.5 years later, he not only has changed his mind, but has gotten almost 40 tattoos in the span of 2.5 years! That always boggled my noggin. The changes in speed and distribution over the last 12 years are a huge factor in itself, but the fact that they both got so many such clearly matching tattoos with each other.. it keeps me up at night. *holds own face*

And many of the first tattoos that Harry got were especially significant. The majority were linked to his identity as a member of the LGBTQAI+ community and rebellion against being trapped (closeted) and his yearning for freedom. Truly, only Harry knows just what they all really mean, but there's obviously a lot of symbolism. Also the fact that he covered 5 of his 67 tattoos and all were from 2012; all were written phrases that could possibly be connected to his sexuality and identity; all were covered with statement symbols. To me, that was so telling. To me that said something along the lines of 'this is how it used to be, how I used to feel, but I'm stronger now, victorious, unafraid, liberated, I know who I am and who I belong to.'

Harry's very first tattoo, which he got on his 18th birthday, is linked to gay youth culture of the 2000s. His second one is a lyrics quote from song of The Temper Trap, a band that (while they did not play Leeds 2011, which was a significant happening for Harry and Lou), played its twin festival Reading 2011 and evidently, is music that both Harry and Louis really enjoy. The song is also very powerful, has a rebellious and defiant vibe. Which leads me to interpret that it might've been tightly connected to Harry's inner world at that time and thus, connected to Louis, too.

They were in the first months of being heavily closeted (with Louis having been given a longtime beard (E)) and after almost 1.5 years of them being together, were already very serious about each other - just 12 days after Harry got that "won't stop 'til we surrender" tattoo, Louis gave him that dark silver Promise Ring and just 2 days after that, the infamous Paris Interviews happened. Those interviews in Paris had a massive ripple effect on them, never again being allowed to be interviewed alone together. I can't imagine how upsetting that must've been for them to be punished in that way. And still, a month later, March 2012, Harry already talked about what he wanted to name his daughter. What 18 year old boy thinks about stuff like this? -- One who knows he's found the love of his life.

Harry and Louis both talked about wanting to have (2-3) kids from day one and while nowadays Louis mentions "F" when kid talk comes up (as he's obliged to do -.-), Harry to this day keeps mentioning his future children. :')

And then Harry's third tattoo was already the "Hi" - the first one that Louis then got the matching one to. "The “Hi” tattoo seems especially poignant as it came in the middle of a heavy Eleanor presence and Harry had Louis possibly tattoo a word on him in Louis’ own handwriting. At the very least, he got a word in Louis’ handwriting tattooed on himself. Almost like a brand." (@bulletprooflarry)

A few months later (Sep 8th, 2012), Louis for the first time ever (that we know of) accompanied Harry to the tattoo shop, where Harry got his first tattoo (the star) coloured in and 2 other small ones. Possibly this being Louis' first taste of professional tattoo work being done/being in a tattoo shop. And it was after that appointment that the tattoo artist talked on IG about how "Harry wanted a big tattoo on his chest once he's back in LA".

Only 1 month later, Louis himself got his first tattoo (tiny screws on his ankles), very likely by Zayn in their hotel rooms/backstage (not a studio, I mean) and together with Harry and Liam; all 4 got the same ones.

3 days later, Louis went and got his first professionally done tattoos - 3 at once in London (skateboard stickman, quote marks and "Far Away.") and was very likely accompanied by Harry - who got his Pink Floyd tattoo (the rainbow triangle without the rainbow colours - meaningful in its own way!). Louis also appeared to have worn Harry's shirt while he got tattooed. I could imagine Louis was testing the waters to see how he "liked" getting tattoos, his first ones all were pretty small, 5-10 minute things - but surely meaningful. And again 3 days later, Harry already eagerly posted about couples matching tattoos on Instagram and on the same day, the "It is what it is" innuendo at a radio interview happened. I imagine at this point they were already seriously discussing matchy matchy tattoos. (◡‿◡✿) And whaddaya know, not even 1 month later, Louis got his "OOPS!" to Harry's "Hi" - their first matching tattoo! ヽ(‘ ∇‘ )ノ

Like -- Louis literally only started getting tattoos half a year after Harry got his first one (on his 18th birthday).

It's my personal belief Louis only started getting tattoos, because Harry started getting them; because they discussed what it made him (and then them both) feel; what the weight of their existence represented; what they could suddenly potentially express through them that they couldn't say out loud in the situation they were in.

They wouldn't have to speak the words, they could boldly show it on their skin every single minute of every single day; could look at them even when the other one wasn't there. Could see them in pictures of the other. Yes, they could be physically kept apart; narratives could be spun in the media and through Louis' twitter account and stunts, but no matter how many times they had to go out with a beard, the visible proof of their commitment, bond and belonging to each other was still always be undeniably there to be seen.

Harry got his "Hi" in Louis' handwriting and then Louis his "OOPS!" in Harry's handwriting.

Harry had the boat and Louis the compass pointing to Home done within the same 24 hours and on opposite arms.

Harry got the butterfly from the same tattoo flash as the "It is what it is" that Louis got 2 months later, so the flash recreates itself when they hug.

Louis initiated their (at least) 3rd matching tattoo with his infinity rope and Harry symbolically covering up his "I CAN'T CHANGE.." with his anchor that is missing rope to tie itself to something.

Harry got his mirrored anatomical heart and Louis his arrow only 1 month later.

I also find significant that Harry already had the rose in Sep 2013 and Louis didn't get anything matching to it until Nov 2014 - until 2 weeks prior his Twitter profile had been used to tweet horrendous lies (that made him look like an insensitive, lying asshole at best and homophobic at worst), which could mean that he possibly hadn't planned to get something matching to the rose at first (because all the other matches were done within 24 hours - 7 months of each other), but then changed his mind after all, because he needed to make a statement.

And holy shit, a statement it was!

Like, Louis got the freaking dagger in the same spot, accompanied by a quote literally written in Harry's handwriting!! i'm gonna lose my mind. i still get goosebumps when I remember when we first saw those tattoos.

it was so brave and so LOUD! 💙💚

Also the fact that Louis' last tattoo before the hiatus was the "28" on his left ring and middle finger, which is an incredibly significant number for him; and a tattoo he shows off like a wedding band. And then he didn't get another tattoo until almost 3 years later and both (X by Robbie Williams in 2018 and RG by Richard in 2019) were tied in meaning to the people who did them, so they were very different from the majority of Louis' tattoos.

I always try and pay attention to things that are not being said; not being done; to the fact that Louis practically stopped getting more tattoos (with only 4 in 9 years and half of them being not even about him) and that the 14 tattoos Harry got in those 9 years are majorly about his family (blood & chosen), which is a -compared to his other tattoos- fairly safe and simple (and sweet, of course!) thing to get -- with the 1 exception of Harry getting a bee in 2017 after Steve Aoki called Louis' fans an "army of bees"- it's all very indicative of what kind of tattoos they haven't been getting anymore; what they don't have to get anymore.

I am not the anon who followed for cobra and now will accept my fate as a tai fan, but please, please, please explain the connection between The Academy Is and Cobra Starship.

i got 2 anons about this and this is literally the thing i'm the most insane about omg ok warning this is gonna be long cause i'm just gonna include everything ive got on my google doc about this

TLDR; same record labels, snakes on a plane, lots of tours together, music videos, webshows and general friendship is the conncection

It starts pre-cobra with midtown. iirc, tai were just fans of midtown pre-tai and in the early days, they're from chicago and came up in the same scene as fob, mike carden (tais guitarists) old band had fob open for them and he was even asked to join fob in an early version of it, so fob, tai and midtown all eventually become friends which is when they met gabe and eventually they toured with midtown twice in 04-05.

2006- midtown dies in 05 and from the ashes rises COBRA STARSHIP. Cobras gets signed to fueled by ramen and decaydance records, which is the same 2 labels as TAI. while gabe's working on the music, tai's bassist, sisky finds out about snakes on a plane and suggested submitting their song to be on the soundtrack. Then william beckett the singer of TAI suggested to gabe that this would be perfect for cobras and he should put a song forward, which he does. Gabe makes some changes to the lyrics, adds william, travie and maja and Bring it (snakes on a plane) was born. (source) Sometime around 2006-2005 gabe briefly featured in the music video for 'the phrase that pays'

2007- things ramp up and they start touring together. Both bands are supporting acts on the honda civic 2007 tour and are featured at 3 separate Decaydance fest shows in Paris, Kohn and London. They also do a series of international festivals together like reading and leeds, pukkelpop, summer sonic, ect AND they do an australia tour just the 2 of them, this was all through summer. At the end of the year cobras jump on TAI's headliner tour, they weren't supposed to butviva la cobra came out earlier than planned so they had no tour to promote it so tai let them open for the last month or so. Both were also apart of the MTVu campus takeover this year. TAI had a webshow and cobra are featured multiple times from 2007-2008, this is actually where they got the idea for cobra cam and even stole TAI's camera man to film it. also somewhere someone released official merch that included cobra, TAI and fob that said 'gabe is not a ynonym for sisky' and they promoted it together.

2008- Both bands are part of the lineup for warped tour this year, snakes was played a lot and when suarez had to leave the tour for a couple days, sisky and the butcher (TAI's drummer) covered for him. TAI's album was released in august and featured backing vocals from Ryland, Alex and Gabe, and every member of cobra is mentioned in the thank yous. Right after warped both bands go to australia and opened for panic at the disco (bonus info: victoria, sisky and ryan went bar hopping for ryans 22nd), then right after they go and do a japan tour with the hush sound and the cab. For welcome to the new administration, suarez remixed TAI's song 'automatic eyes'

2009 onwards- Things slowed down after this. The butcher is briefly featured in the good girls go bad music video. in 2011 both band play at the 15th anniversary of fueled by ramen, this ended up being TAI's last show before they split. After they split, butcher was the drum tech for cobra from 2011-2012. When TAI had a reunion in 2015, suarez played bass for sisky with carly rae jepsen so he could play on their reunion tour. Also around 2015 Gabe and Mike started TAG music together, i think mike has left since then though.

Extras: at every TAI show since their 2022 reunion they have played snakes on a plane, with gabe or without. Gabe also always does backing vocals for the song 'classifieds' if he's there. Sisky used to do travies rap during snakes if he wasn't there, he did it a bunch on warped 2008.

Sisky commented this during cobrakkah in 2021 and i think about it a lot tbh. I think they were just best friends who got to tour the world together in their youth and are still friends and still hold a lot of love for eachother :,)

hope that wasn't too much, i'm pretty sure i covered everything that i know about. Decaydance is my favourite thing so i have a google doc of all their connections so i remember them all :D

something to add would be that TAI are opening for fob on the 3rd in LA and a few cobras live there, so i wouldn't be suprised if they show up for snakes on a plane!

With his shrewd eyes and his forks of corn-yellow hair, Julian Sands was a natural choice to play the valiant, romantic George Emerson, who snatches a kiss from Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) in a Tuscan poppy field in A Room With a View (1985). “I wanted him to be real, not a two-dimensional minor screen god,” he said. “I liked him in his lighter, sexier moments, less so when he was brooding.”

Sands, who has died aged 65 while hiking in mountains in California, was dashing in that film, but he could also project a dandyish, effete or sinister quality. He was blessed with a mellifluous voice and a lean, youthful, fine-boned face, even if, as a child, his brothers insisted he resembled a horse. (He agreed.) In James Ivory’s film of EM Forster’s novel, he was pure heart-throb material. His participation in the notorious nude bathing scene was no impediment to the picture’s success.

Prior to that, he had played the journalist Jon Swain in The Killing Fields (1984), Roland Joffé’s drama about the bloody rise of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. The picture marked the beginning of his friendship with his co-star John Malkovich. “I’d been cautioned by Roland to keep my distance from John because he was an unstable character,” Sands recalled. “And John had been told by Roland to stay away from me, because I was a refined, sensible person who didn’t want to be distracted. In fact, we bonded instantly.”

Malkovich directed Sands in a one-man show in which he read Harold Pinter’s poetry. First staged in 2011, the production had its origins in an occasion six years earlier when Pinter, suffering from oesophageal cancer, had asked Sands to read in his stead at a benefit event in St Stephen Walbrook church in the City of London. The writer “sat in the front row with his stone basilisk stare”, Sands recalled.

Not all his work was so highfalutin, and a good deal of it fell into the category of boisterous, campy fun. In Ken Russell’s Gothic (1986), he played the poet Shelley, who indulges in sex, drugs and séances with Lord Byron (Gabriel Byrne) and the future Mary Shelley (Natasha Richardson), and is prone to recite verse naked in thunderstorms.

In a similar vein but far less deranged was Impromptu (1991), which brought together other notable 19th-century figures including George Sand (Judy Davis) and Frederic Chopin (Hugh Grant). Sands, who played Franz Liszt, described it as “Carry On Composer”.

Born in Otley, West Yorkshire, he was raised in Leeds and Gargrave, near Skipton; he later described his childhood as “part conservative and part Huckleberry Finn”. His mother, Brenda, was a Tory councillor and leading light of the local amateur dramatic society, while his father, William, who left when Julian was three, was a soil analyst. Julian made his acting debut in a local pantomime at the age of eight.

At 13, he won a scholarship to Lord Wandsworth college, Hampshire. He moved to London to study at Central School of Speech and Drama, and while there became friends with Derek Jarman. He played the Devil in an extended promotional video that Jarman directed in 1979 for Marianne Faithfull’s album Broken English. The role had been intended for David Bowie, who dropped out at the eleventh hour. “You’re devilish,” Jarman told Sands. “You can play it.”

The actor’s first film appearance came in an adaptation of Peter Nichols’s stage comedy Privates on Parade (1983), starring John Cleese and Denis Quilley, from which his one line of dialogue was cut. There was more rotten luck when he won the lead in a new Tarzan movie, only for the financing to fall through. It was eventually filmed as Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984), with Christopher Lambert donning the hallowed loin-cloth.

On television, he starred with Anthony Hopkins in the miniseries A Married Man (1983). In Oxford Blues (1984), he was a rower butting heads with a Las Vegas parking attendant (Rob Lowe) who has tricked his way into a place at Oriel College. He was in The Doctor and the Devils (1985), inspired by the Burke and Hare case. “I had a roll in the hay with Twiggy which took about 15 takes,” he said.

Following A Room With a View, he agreed to play the lead in Ivory’s next Forster adaptation, Maurice (1987), before abruptly dropping out and fleeing to the US. In the process, he left behind his wife, the journalist Sarah Sands (nee Harvey), who described him as “restless” and “dramatic”, and their son, Henry. “I’m not the first person to create stability and security and then dismantle it even more effectively than I created it,” the actor said.

Once in America he took on an array of film parts. In Warlock (1989), he played the son of Satan, wreaking havoc in modern-day Los Angeles. Investing this pantomime villain with lip-smacking brio, he was likened by the Washington Post to a “hell-bent Peter Pan” and nominated for best actor in the Fangoria Chainsaw awards. He reprised the role in Warlock: The Armageddon (1993).

As an entomologist in Arachnophobia (1990), he was called upon to have as many as a hundred spiders crawling all over his face. Alternating these mainstream projects with arthouse ones, he played a diplomat in pre-war Poland in Krzysztof Zanussi’s Wherever You Are … (1988) and a monk in Night Sun (1990), the Taviani brothers’ adaptation of Tolstoy’s short story Father Sergius.

For the Canadian horror director David Cronenberg, he starred in the warped and witty Naked Lunch (1991), which disproved those who had declared William S Burroughs’s original novel unfilmable. Just as outré but less accomplished was Boxing Helena (1993), directed by Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David. Sands played a surgeon who keeps a woman captive by making her a quadruple amputee.

After starring as a young classics teacher in his friend Mike Figgis’s film of Terence Rattigan’s The Browning Version (1994), Sands worked a further six times with that director, appearing in his movies even when he was an unorthodox choice for the job in hand. One example was the part of a menacing Latvian pimp in Leaving Las Vegas (1996).

Later roles include a mysteriously unblemished Phantom in Dario Argento’s version of The Phantom of the Opera (1998), Louis XIV (whom Sands described as “the first supermodel”) in Joffé’s Vatel (2000), a crime kingpin named Snakehead in the Jackie Chan vehicle The Medallion (2003), a computer security wizard in the comic caper Ocean’s Thirteen (2007), a younger version of the businessman played by Christopher Plummer in David Fincher’s take on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011) and a sadistic paedophile in the gruelling wartime odyssey The Painted Bird (2019).

On television, he was a Russian entrepreneur in the fifth season of 24 (2006) and the hero’s father, Jor-El, in two episodes of the Superman spin-off Smallville (2009). For the BBC, he played two very different actors in factually based one-off specials: first Laurence Olivier in Kenneth Tynan: In Praise of Hardcore (2005), then John Le Mesurier in We’re Doomed! The Dad’s Army Story (2015).

His recent work includes Benediction, Terence Davies’s haunting study of Siegfried Sassoon, and the thriller The Survivalist (both 2021), which found him back in the company of Malkovich. One of several titles still awaiting release is the drama Double Soul (2023) starring F Murray Abraham and Paz Vega.

Sands never stopped wandering, walking, running and climbing. “I am on a perpetual Grand Tour,” he said in 2000. Asked in 2018 about his eclectic career, he explained: “I was looking for something exotic, things that took me out of myself. I think I found myself a little boring.”

He was reported missing while out in the San Gabriel mountains, north of Los Angeles, in mid-January 2023. His remains were found in June.

In 1990 he married Evgenia Citkowitz. She survives him, along with their two daughters, Imogen and Natalya, and his son.
