I might elaborate on these individual incidents on later posts but upon multiple viewings I can finally put words to why I hated the characterizations of multiple characters in the LotR movie trilogy.
It is because PJ & Co. 's favourite method of storytelling is to pull down side characters to build up their own heroes.
And I'm talking about the 'holy' trinity of Sam, Aragorn and Thorin.
Frankly, book readers should've seen it coming from a mile away.
So let's start with Sam. Raise your hand if you've ever seen any fan trumpeting that Sam is the 'real' hero. And nine out of ten, these fans were introduced into LotR through the movies. Congratulations Pete, you've succeeded!
Now before touching the Tolkien letter 'supporting' this idea (where if you read the full letter you'll understand Sam is only more of a chief hero when compared to a very specific character and that character is not Frodo *coughAragorncough*), I would like to draw attention to one simple fact - is there any other major character in the trilogy that has more of his flaws ignored, covered-up or outright repurposed to become a good quality? Because I come up with nothing.
Sam is the quintessential hobbit. He represents all their best traits - that assured loyalty, the steadfast friendship, the simple appreciation for nature. But he is also a representative of all of their worst traits - the closed-mindedness, the blind adherence to hierarchy and the prejudice against the lowly and the unknown.
But Sam does none of that!
Yeah, you'd be correct - if you only watched the movies. That is precisely the point.
The absolute heart of LotR is Frodo's journey, but Frodo is a 'terrible' male lead for a Fantasy themed action adventure film. He is a middle-aged man who sets out on a selfless journey to save the world (but not for himself). He doesn't have a dramatic character arc, majority of his battles are internal and require monologues, and the only visible sign of his burden is completely up to the polish of the individual actor's performance. For the epic type of film PJ planned, Frodo is a nightmare.
But there is an easy solution for this - Frodo is accompanied by Sam throughout the entire journey. Sam, unlike Frodo, has underdog written all over him. It is easy to make a character arc about a nobody becoming a somebody. He has a major battle one-to-one against a giant spider. He is allowed a large variety of emotions that don't require depth (excepting key moments) because he is meant to be simple-minded.
So what does PJ & Co. do?
They make Sam the main lead, of course. The beginning chapters are understandably condensed, but Sam still gets his 'dropping eaves on Mr. Frodo' part of the story untouched, whereas all of Frodo's planning, all of Merry's intelligence, and Pippin and Fatty's contributions were all cut out.
We soon meet Strider, and immediately Sam's foolhardiness is front and centre in the book. He looks down upon this lowly ranger and almost interrogates him only to have Strider illustrate how such behaviour could have easily gotten Sam and Frodo killed. It is Frodo who speaks with wisdom and questions Strider in a more moderate way.
And this entire farce of speaking out of turn happens again when they meet Faramir. Sam is not only not wise, his is foolish enough to make the exact same mistake twice. And similarly Faramir reprimands him and tells him not to speak before Frodo has spoken.
But instead of highlighting these incidents as a flaw Sam should learn to grow from, both times in the movies PJ instead frames the incidents as Sam being justified in his words and defence of Frodo. His bravado is praised as being a loyal friend, instead of the foolish actions they are.
But even with erasing Sam's faults, there is still a problem - Frodo. Frodo's relationship with Sam has become closer than master/servant, but there is still an inate imbalance (more due to Frodo's age and wisdom than anything else) to frame it as just simple friendship.
Personally I feel it is like Sam views Frodo as his senpai, his leading light. And Frodo wishes to guide Sam to learn new things, because Sam's presence as a quintessential hobbit is so much like home that he remains a constant comfort to Frodo no matter the burden of the One Ring.
But Frodo and Sam having a senpai-kouhai relationship is troublesome, because Frodo never leaves. He is the one Sam consistently depends on to lead him, and book!Sam's most major growth actually occurs after Frodo has left for the Undying Lands and Sam grows to become a capable Mayor.
So naturally Frodo has to be weakened to let Sam shine. Firstly, the age difference is removed completely, even going in the opposite direction - Sam is now older than Frodo and cares for him like an elder brother or butler. When faced with dangerous situations like the Nazgul or the troll, Sam is the fearless one instead of Frodo. Sam's wariness is always affirmed by the narrative and Frodo's wisdom in discerning people is putdown as blind kindness.
Nowhere is this more obvious than the Frodo-Sam-Gollum relationship.
In the book, Sam's wariness towards Gollum stems from both the creature's poor reputation, but also from petty jealousy. The threat of betrayal from Gollum is real, yes, but throughout the book Frodo has it under control. He never trusts Gollum more than he needed to, and in fact was winning Gollum's trust with his wisdom, kindness and fair-minded treatment.
But Sam had different ideas. Before Gollum, Sam had always been the closest to Mr. Frodo, not only because of their close relationship, but also because Sam sees himself as the most useful to Frodo. Sure, Merry and Pippin and friends, but neither can serve Mr. Frodo the way he can. Until Gollum.
Gollum is brought in as an indispensable guide and Sam immediately feels threatened. He doesn't actually physically threaten Gollum, but instead resorts to childish name-calling to put Gollum down. He constantly wished to assert dominance over Gollum, to show he is closer to Frodo no matter how good a job Gollum does. Sam basically just wants to 'put him in his lowly place'.
It is this relentless bullying that ends up destroying Gollum's redemption (something also in a Tolkien letter, but Sam fans won't bring this one up), and forces the destruction of the ring to be 'an act of God' instead of Gollum's own will.
This is the biggest flaw in Sam - that he is quick to judge and slow to pity, a trait highly unsuitable for a ringbearer, much less the 'main' hero. This is also the main reason for Frodo's character change and the dynamics change in the relationship between all three.
It is extremely difficult to just cut out all the antagonistic actions Sam has taken against Gollum, so instead the path PJ & Co. took is to 'make Sam right'.
Instead of Frodo being in control and trying to make Sam and Gollum get along, make it that Frodo is the helpless one and being pulled in two different directions. Sam, being the hero, is correct. And Gollum naturally has to be wrong. Frodo, because of the 'evil influence of the Ring' chooses wrongly and believes Gollum, giving rise to the infamous "Sam, go home" scene.
This change of the relationship dynamics both strengthens Sam's moral position as well as weakens Frodo's wisdom. And to PJ & Co. that is a good thing, because now Sam is truly the main lead.
I'll think I continue Aragorn and Thorin another day, but you can be assured that PJ & Co. just uses the same tricks again *coughFaramirandThranduilcough*.

life is hard for us oz fans who are only meh about wicked. have half a meme.
#it's not even that i dislike boq as a character - he's fine. i think galinda is the most intriguing of the musical esp in her relationship#with power and how that relates to her relationships with other people. but boq is fine#i am just SO fucking tired of conflating boq wicked with nick chopper baum books#that's not my tin woodman. and i don't want him to be. nick (unlike many oz characters) has a very specific and set backstory#he has a whole damn book about it ffs#and boq is such a different character in terms of role symbolism and personality that i just cannot see him as even an au version of nick#fiyero too to be completely honest. though his mischaracterization doesn't bother me quite as much bc i read the book and he is rather#intriguing as a separate character - i don't love him in the musical tho. anyways specifically calling boq the tin woodman and saying#all the baum book stuff happened to him is so irritating to me because they are not at all the same. and nick is one of my favorite charas#in any media ever. idk. no hate if you like boq ofc and i don't want to stop you from having fun with the characters#i just am getting tired of the greater oz fandom latching on to wicked as fleshing out the baum or mgm characters. it's an entirely#different world. (and yes we can discuss the fact that wicked is intended to be canon compliant with the 39 film - but once again it's#a stretch to say it fits the charas. and that isn't the issue i have here.)#anyways. sorry. i'm just tired of wicked = boq = nick stuff#esp im annoyed at the fiyero and boq blorbo-ifying i see when the women of this musical are far more interesting and proactive#boq and fiyero are just furniture/pawns in the great drama that is elphaba's life and the way she pulls glinda into it with her#but WHATEVER i DIGRESS and shit. ignore this. whatever#it's the way people attempt to reconcile a lot of non-compliant media into whichever one they like the best. which is all fun and games#i am just being a hater. ok? this is me being a hater.#analysis#wizard of oz#wicked#wicked musical#toast talks oz#toasty talks

Miss Rogers extended her hand to be kissed, and Alek hesitated-- she was hardly of his social standing. But Americans were famous for ignoring such notions, so Alek took her hand and kissed the air.
"You missed," she said with a baffled smile.
"Missed?" Alek asked.
"Her hand," said Dr. Barlow. "The custom in Europe, Miss Rogers, is that only married women are kissed directly on the flesh. You young things are thought to be too easily swayed by the touch of lips."
"Young? But I'm all of twenty!" Miss Rogers said. "My hand has been kissed many times without injury."
Like. Okay. I knew she was younger than me by now. I'm aware of the fact that I will get older and the characters will not. But this one slapped me in the face in a way I was not expecting.
God. Twenty years old. I'm only 26 and my twenty year old coworkers exhaust me.
(I can't think of a way to end this without it sounding like I hate 20-something's, which is NOT true, but all the most annoying people in my life right now are 19-22. Being 20 doesn't make you annoying but unfortunately now I'm thinking about [name redacted] and now I'm annoyed)
#lily liveblogs leviathan 2024#leviathan series#leviathan trilogy#ahhh the ever forward march of time. exhausting.#hey did anyone else read those whales on stilts books where the fictional characters only aged if no one read their books#I think about that all the damn time. very weird sequel that never got brought up again in the rest of the series

The differences in Claudia's death in the TV show vs the book show the different sides of death - the pain of loss vs the pain of absence.
The TV show showed that even with a crowd against her, both human and vampire, she wouldn't back down and sacrifice her own convictions. And that she still had love for her parents even with her hate. It's the fact that she was ripped away from her parents, her lover, and her life that's painful - she's kicking and screaming the whole time that we see her burn.
The book felt different because Louis never even sees the trial or murder of Claudia. When he finally gets on stage, all that's there is a crowd of laughing vampires and Lestat turning her dress over and over in his hands. The only other thing left of her is ash and her hair. We don't know what her last words were, how she acted, what she might've thought - she's just gone. The pain comes from the fact that she was there and living one moment and all that remained the next moment was her absence.
I don't think either is better than the other. The TV show feels like her death is the unnatural tearing of a child from her relationships and the life she had yet to live, while the book is the shock and horror that a person can be living one moment and just gone the next.
#like. the tv show let us feel the pain and anger and regret of claudia being killed#but the book really captured the disbelief that youll never know anything more about that person. theyll never do anything new or say#anything to you ever again. they were there and now theyre gone#i bawled over the tv show and when i read the book i was more like. yeah. damn. i feel like i knew her and she just died irl.#interview with the vampire#iwtv claudia#the vampire chronicles

not that i dont want to see his games, but i think haymitch joining the rebellion would be so much more interesting? like, imagine the first games after he wins. he sees the capitol having the time of their life while kids murder each other but he has to put on a showman's face bc hes still naive enough to think that if he plays the bigger game one of the current 12 tributes can come home.
I agree!! I just finished rereading the Catching Fire chapter where Katniss & Peeta watch his games, and while I can definitely imagine aspects of it could be fleshed out (with the reasoning that the Capitol edited or cut out parts entirely, etc.), it does sort of give of away all the major parts of the games…not just the forcefield trick but him almost dying, maysilee saving him, them continuing as allies, how she died, the volcano, the mutts he faced, the type of arena, the tributes he killed, the tributes it came down to. It is sort of like well what’s left, lmao, but I am confident Suzanne wouldn’t write an entire book just to rehash those same plot points in greater detail. It all has me SO curious!!
I think i am more intrigued by his life after coming home and his relationships with the other victors, his role as a mentor (they make quite a big deal in CF about how Haymitch is the only victor who has to mentor both tributes every single year. It’s specifically brought up several times!!), and also insight into snow’s thought process for killing his family. Katniss comments that his force field trick was “almost as bad as our berries” and haymitch comes in and says “almost, but not quite,” and the book is so specific on Snow’s reasoning for not killing Katniss and Peeta’s families right away. If what they did is considered worse than Haymitch’s thing, why is that? Is it just the specific circumstances of rebellion (or lack thereof) in the districts during each of their Games that prompts the different response tactics, or was there something else Haymitch did beyond just using the force field? His family is killed long before even the Victory Tour…so maybe something he said at his crowning/post game interview? I dunno!
#I’m excited regardless because I know my girl Suzanne will be cooking something good either way#but I’m kind of hoping the games is the first half and the aftermath or him mentoring is the second half#also I’m delusionally hoping we get a happy post war epilogue with him and Peeta and Katniss 🤓#is it likely idk but a girl can dream.#I could just use some cheerfulness after the inevitable trauma. let the man celebrate his damn birthday again my god 😭#also since we know from the snippet haymitch goes into the woods.#I’m wondering if we will get an interaction between him and katniss’ father#I am simply an adult woman with many questions about this book labeled 7th to 9th grade reading level 😌don’t mind me#haymitch abernathy#thg sotr#thg#hg#sotr speculation#sunrise on the reaping

⚠️Spoilers for Shinrei tantei Yakumo - the lamenting doll file 03 and the epilogue⚠️
Here in case you missed it
I just read it and spontaneously wrote this.
Be careful if you haven't read it yet.
The file starts with where it left off the last time with them deciding to locate Mahiro's mother.
I kinda forgot about it since we haven't seen Isshin for a while, but this volume reminded me of how much Yakumo is influenced by Isshin. Be it the way they talk or sometimes even their mannerisms.
It's pretty much a given that they'll have to stay another night at the hotel but that would mean Haruka will have to stay in that creepy ass room again. Isshin really told Yakumo “accept the situation or sleep with her”😭😭😭
But sadly It's just like Gotou said, Their relationship label won't allow it smh
Gotou's snores and Isshin's bad posture are KILLING ME. My mom entered the room while I was having a fit of laughter I just looked crazy to her 😭
Isshin is so chill he doesn't care if you try to make him look bad. Rather his hilarious responses made Gotou look silly for complaining. Poor Gotou-san. Maybe I should learn from him... Unbotherement sure is powerful~
Anyways I guess that means Yakumo is the only one who sleeps normally hahaha
Just like I expected, Mahiro's death is weighing Hiromi down. kinda knew it from file 02, but hearing the details from Masae made me want to cry. No parent should ever go through this.
And so they split into two teams: team Gotou and Yakumo. and team Haruka and Isshin. All I'll say is that the latter team sure is a good match.
And then we have Gotou-san who not only has to put up with Yakumo's comments but also got a Salary cut too!! He suffered too much this trip. Imagine wanting to skip work only to get dragged all the way to a whole different prefecture. Still kinda his fault for ignoring Ishii smh.
Speaking of Ishii I'm happy he and Makoto were mentioned even though they didn't make an appearance. Isshin's mere presence made up for any other character's disappearance. Kaminaga-sensei is a genius for mentioning Eishin too. I think references like that will increase in the complete version. Knowing the future and the direction of your work sure makes a big difference. It was really interesting knowing that Eishin was the one taking care of Nao when Isshin's not around. Nao must really miss Isshin even if she doesn't show it on her face. I head canon afterwards Nao being overjoyed to see not only Isshin but Yakumo and Haruka too after his two-day disappearance.
The scene when that madman dragged Haruka gave me the chills. Kaminaga-sensei using TTCM as a reference sure was brutal I ended up imagining it. Haruka did her best till the very end but the situation was hopeless. She can't even resist. her mouth, legs and wrists were taped. And on top of that he had the audacity to slap her! How dare him! If that man wasn't charged with attempted murder after all this I'm throwing hands!
In the end the case was solved and we find out that Takahiro-kun was the one talking to Hiromi all along. It really broke my heart knowing that all this time he didn't even know he was dead and yet played along to try to comfort Hiromi who was mourning for her child. What a strong kid. He and Mahiro are.
The lamenting doll huh... makes sense.
In the epilogue we learn that Yakumo can't handle hot food which I thought was really cute.
Tbh his whole food preference was quite unexpected. First we learn that he has a sweet tooth (Which Haruka thought doesn't suit him at all lol) and then a similar situation to the one in the epilogue happened in vol. 7 iirc when Yakumo was (again) staring at the sake and when Haruka asked if he can't drink he stubbornally tries to only to spit it out. This man just can't be honest😂 I actually really respect men who don't drink or smoke so that's a flex~
Now some of my favorite Yakumo lines which for some reason all happen to be verbally abusing Gotou (Can't blame Haruka for laughing because c'mon how could you not?)
• “You can say that because you've never heard it yourself. Compared to Gotou-san's snores, even a train would be quieter.”
• “A member of the police stating that he'll be driving under the influence? Japan is finished.”
• “I'm saying bears can't understand the taste of wine. What if someone made up a new proverb: bears and wine.”
• "I don't want to waste any more calories than this."
• "Well, that's not surprising. A bear with damaged taste buds such as Gotou-san will never understand."
Bye I'm using these irl.
I'll also add these two because I keep remembering these two exchanges and laughing:
1)
"I see. If you don't want to, it's fine. But please stop bringing cases to me from now on."
"This and that are a different story."
"No, it's the same thing. Ah, that's right. So that Gotou-san will stop bringing me cases, I'll be reporting to the police that you've been leaking investigation details to a civilian."
"What!? Don't joke with me! I'll get fired if you do that!" Gotou shouted in panic.
"Good then. That way I won't have to involve myself in cases that have nothing to do with me, and taxpayer money won't have to go into paying the incompetent Gotou-san; just like killing two birds with one stone."
"What did you say!?"
"Isn't that great? This way, Gotou-san can also play around to your heart's content. So it'll be more like killing three birds with one stone," said Yakumo, grinning as he looked at Gotou.
He really stabbed where it hurt. Having been commented like that, Gotou wouldn't have a way to refuse. "Fine. I'll help. Happy?"
Gotou lifted his heavy bottom up from the sofa reluctantly as he sighed. Yet Yakumo wasn't done with his counterattacks.
"Not really, it's fine even without Gotou-san helping."
"That wasn't what you said earlier!"
2)
"Sorry about that. Could you please tell me what I should do?" Gotou asked formally while swallowing his displeasure.
"You should know if you listened to the story"
"I'm asking because I don't know."
"You should have if you paid close attention to the whole story."
"Well I don't know!"
"Is that something to be proud about? Good grief.”
Too much Yakumo😂
Volume 11 is up next. I'm really really excited for this one because Unkai and Miyuki are one of the best antagonists I've ever read. I'll never forgive them for what they did to Yakumo but their back stories are very very well written and explains how they ended up that way. That last arc will wrap everything up. I remember reading the book description a while back but Laute's translations stopped at the time so I thought I'll never read it.
The day has finally come!!!
#I know I said I know longer post but I wanted to write something short like everyone in the comment section#I have too much to say tho so I just put it here#Writing this was really fun even though no one will read it#I'll do it again when vol. 11 comes out#My obsession with the Yakumo novel is back and I'm all ready for it~#I wanted to contribute to the fandom in some way so I forced a couple of my friends to read Yakumo and they actually liked it#Unsurprisingly because how could you not? hopefully the number of people who read Yakumo will increase~#Although tbh the main reason I did it was because I wanna yap to someone about my current no.1 hyperfixation#Also why do the illustrations in the reblog look so damn good? Where is that book I NEED it.#990 yen is quite ok-ish in my currency and I don't need to learn a whole different language for it#guess I'll save up~#I feel like I overdid it with the tags#Oh well#shinrei tantei yakumo#shinrei tantei yakumo translations#lamenting doll#saitou yakumo#yakumo saitou#manabu kaminaga
