“Is it just me or is this far too easy? Like should there not be more obstacles in the way of the Horcruxes themselves? I still can't believe I had to stay here,” Marcus grumbled. He was still a bit sore that he hadn’t been allowed to go to Hogwarts with them. 

“Maybe he thinks no one will ever figure it out, and they are pretty hard to find unless you know where to look. I mean, if we hadn’t figured out his lineage we would never have found the ring,” Remus said, placating the ruffled wolf. 

“Don’t worry you can come with us to Crouch’s,” Sirius patted him on the back, slightly harder than he probably needed to. “Speaking of Crouch, how do you want to do it, Reggie?” Sirius turned his attention to his brother, who now that the diadem was destroyed appeared to be trying to convince James to follow him deeper into the forest. “Ahem, Regulus Arcturus Black, your input is required, you can input Prongs later.” Sirius snickered. 

“What?!” Regulus spun around red-faced.

“Crouch? I’m thinking you go in under the cloak and act all Jacob Marley and scare the shit out of him.”

“Who?” Regulus asked, his brow furrowed as he tried to make sense of Sirius’s words. 

“You know the apparition that visited Scrooge telling him he needed to mend his ways, or he’d be doomed to an eternity of restless walking, never finding peace! You know A Christmas Carol!” Regulus just shook his head. 

“Merlin, educate your boyfriend Prongs, I can’t believe you never read Dickens,” Sirius groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. He’d read the entire collection after Remus had introduced him to them, but then again, all Regulus’s friends were purebloods. What a sad little life they lived. “Alright basically you go and scare the shit out of Crouch, and we hunt for the Horcrux,” Sirius decided to get to the point. “And then you are going to go to Potter Manor and read all the Dickens books and educate yourself on muggle classic literature,” He shook his head again and stormed off towards the camp, Remus hot on his heels.

- Sirius was trained in ballroom dancing, piano, violin and had etiquette lessons as a child. Speaks French, English, German and Russian. She can play almost any instrument tbh.

- Loved to paint, write poetry and draw. (drew mostly on black and grey). Sirius also kept a journal he learned to charm so only his eyes could read it.

- Favorite band was Queen, also loved Bowie, KISS, Led Zeppelin, T. Rex and all of glam rock (later found a passion for punk) and secretly loved Tchaikovsky. Found muggle music through Andromeda. She was like her older sister and his biggest protector, he was destroyed when she was disowned. She kept buying sirius vinyls and sending it to her while she was at school.

- Sirius was a natural born rebel, they defied everything just by existing. "My existence is a scandal" was his motto.

- Sirius loved to read, but at home was only allowed to read russian and french classics like Dostoevsky, Victor Hugo, Tolstoy, Dumas etc.

- Once their uncle Alphard gave him Oscar Wilde books and that became her whole life. She loved 'The ghost of Canterville' and 'The Picture of Dorian Grey'. Sirius never really talked to other ppl about liking books though.

- At home, her life was shit, of course. Her parents were abusive and it started really young, they were manipulative and narcissistic, neglected Sirius's emotions and feelings, and prohibited him from showing their true self. But the abuse was discreet, quiet, it wasn't obvious to him. She knew it wasn't alright but also couldn't recognize it was abuse, to her, their parents just wanted what was best for him, wanted him to be their best self. Her mom still told him she loved them, they still gave star things, they treated them well and like shit at the same time.

- As Sirius was growing up the abuse kept getting worse, they started using curses and hexes and beating him, hurting her in many ways, but she thought he deserved it because that would help them become a better person, she still understood the abuse as care. As he turned 13 he was thought dark arts at home stars parents used his wants and needs as a way to control her, she always had to do something for her family to get basic human treatment. As she got older they started getting more violent, using unforgivables and curses that hurt her physically.

- Walburga was literally one of the worst people to walk on this earth, she was bitter, heartless, prejudiced, violent, ruthless, she was an awful human being and Sirius HATED her. Walburga was obsessed with keeping up appearances, making the family name justice, being better and superior to everyobody else, she had these delusions of grandeur, of maintaining a superiority status. He was scared she could become like her mother one day, that she was as insane as the woman who gave him life but also literally tortured and tried to kill her own children just for the sake of "the family name".

- Her relationship with Regulus was very complicated. When Reg was born Sirius loved him so much, he couldn't even explain. Reg was everything Sirius could never be. He was everything her parents wanted her to be, he was quiet, polite, patient, never spoke out of turn, he did everything his parents wanted him no without question. Sirius could feel in all the ways their parents acted that they loved Reg more, that Reg was what they actually wanted.

- Sirius hated herself for it because she hated his brother for something he could not control but they also loved him more than anything. So their relationship was unstable, some nights they went to each other for comfort, others they wouldnt even share looks. Around 9/8yo Reg told Sirius that he just always knew he had to play a part, to pretend in order to survive in that family, that he had to be literally a perfect child. For most of her life, Sirius did love his brother more than anything. After Reg grew up and started to get more brainwashed by his parents, they drifted apart he resented Sirius, he despised him for being a blood traitor, for being queer, for being wrong. (Abused children deal with abuse in different ways so i would never say regulus was a bad person, he was victim) Sirius had to leave and it was the right thing to do.

- Only started to have longer hair by the end of 4th year

- He was a happy child, a little star, brighting people's days, always laughing and being just loud. Her mother hated it. Orion was just neglectful and complacent with Walburga.

- Sirius was very loud, just a loud person, who talked loud, walked making noise, talked with their whole body

- His presence was always noticed, because she could not shut up. They always knew something was wrong in the way her family worked, every night she cried looking at the stars wishing to be saved, because she knew life could be better, she always felt something was missing, like a void in his chest, like he wasn't complete. That void was filled with James. He felt how real normal people love for the first time with James. He was the brother she wanted Reg to be, James was supportive of his every action and trait, they could hug and show affection.

- James was so much more than just a best friend, he was truly Sirius' brother, their relationship wasn't platonic nor romantic, their loved surpassed these notions we have of love. Their love just was. Nothing could compare to Remus though, he was her soulmate, her other half, they were connected by the red string, they were born to be together. He probably fell in love with Remus the second they met.

- Sirius was sensitive and also strong, she cried himself to sleep sometimes bc he didn't wanna bother anyone. He used humor to hide the fact that she hated himself, he was always cracking jokes and making people laugh, because that made her feel loved.

- Sometimes she lost her sense of self, she dissociated and wondered who she even was, if that person was actually them, if he wasnt pretending just to cause a scene, those days she became distant, nobody recognized him. He was agressive and impulsive and somehow was always hurting the people she cared most.

- Some days she felt like a complete failiure and waste of space, other days she felt he was better than every other living human, some days she loved who she was, others he wanted to die and be born as someone else. He didn't know how he felt about himself, nothing in her was constant, except the change. She didn't know how she felt, it was empty and simultaniously overwhelming because she felt everything and nothing at the same time. She was insecure and over confident, rude and also sweet and polite.

-His boggart was being left by everyone he loved.

- There was a time in his life where she treated everyone like shit on purpose because she was convinced that everyone would leave him and some point so it would be "her choice". That didnt last and it was awful, he felt awful, she cried every day, she began to self harm and hate himself.

- She hated being impulsive and always hurting people. She hated that sometimes his mind kinda shut off and he lost control of what he was doing and saying, hated that she couldn't remember it after, he hated that on these times she always did the worst things imaginable.

- Sirius dressed fem and masc, depends on the day and what he was feeling, they wore lots of leather jackets, croptops, low waisted jeans, oversize jackets, coats and sweaters. loved something showing chest, very flamboyant and sparkly. Their color palette was black, red, grey, purple and dark brown.

- Sirius loved tattoos and piercings. She got her first tattoo on sixth year, along with Remus. She had many ear piercings, nipple piercing and a stud nose (with a ruby on it)

- The relationship with his sexuality was complicated, he always knew she didn't like women the way boys were supposed to. In Hogwarts, he did everything to show everyone that he, in fact, did like girls. Until fifth year, she just couldn't take it anymore. she did hook up with some random girls just for show (nothing sexual, he couldn't physically put themselves through that). But then he met Benjy and that's when it all changed, Benjy helped him discover who she was, what they liked, what felt good and comfortable and what didn’t, helped them with the whole gender thing (Sirius did not give a fuck, sometimes he felt like a boy, sometimes not and that was it, couldn't care less about how ppl referred to or perceived her). So basically the only people he ever had anything with were Remus and Benjy. 

-Sirius found it easy to hate and dislike things and people and she hated herself most of all for it. Because good people can't hate, good people only love, good people don't get angry and destructive. Therefore, in her mind, he was a terrible person.

- Sirius felt like a mistake sometimes, like a waste of space, like he was useless and could have done more to save his brother, to save her cousin, to be loved by their family. For a long time, that was all she wanted, that's what he would see in the mirror of Erised, him being her true self in front of her family, dressed however he pleased, and their family behind smiling, supporting and loving her. 

- His boggart was himself, with the dark mark on her arm. The slytherin green tie, pale skin, hair all short and well cut. His biggest fear was being evil, ending up being the horrible person the voice inside their head kept saying he was.

- His biggest dream for years was being loved by his family, but becoming what they wanted was her biggest fear. She had always been torn.

- James was the one that made them realize that her family was fucked up, that they were wrong, that Sirius was enough and that he did not need to change in order to be treated like a person, that her family wasn't worth it and that she had to let go. It wasn’t easy, it took James five long years, but on December 1975 Sirius came all bloody to the Potters, left her family behind, and began to heal. 

- Sirius was unstable, as established here, he hated herself for it. Sometimes she felt like she only did the wrong thing, like she was rotten and couldn’t be fixed, like she would die being a mistake like he could never be loved and never truly love.

- Sirius just has a very androgynous feminine aura, loved to explore gender expression, and never really cared what people said.

- Sirius Black and Remus Lupin are connected by the red string, they are head over heels in love with each other, they ARE love. Their relationship isn’t toxic, its beautiful and pure and genuine and sweet, it may have had its ups and downs but they never treated each other poorly. Even when they were mad or fighting, if one needed help or comfort, the other put everything aside to come to their aid. They were always touching and holding hands and exchanding looks, their love was so strong you could feel it in the air, everyone around them could see it, it was undeniable.

YES and they each do it in a specific color so they know whose is whose. i think they start doing it because remus never got to read wizarding classics because of his dad and reg never got to read muggle classics because of his mom. so they start swapping and one day reg throws back one of remus' books and is like 'i had to add some of my own thoughts, i've never seen worse case of mischaracterization in my life'. and they bicker and banter in the margins but quietly they're so pleased to have someone to talk to ab them

idk if you’ve read these or any yet, so they might seem kinda basic. they’re just to introduce you to this world/the characters. i wish i had a list like this when i first got into the marauders fandom ngl

also these are only gonna be marauders era fics, if you want golden trio era fics as well, i can give you some!

anyway:

all the young dudes by mskingbean89 (completed, 527k words, wolfstar & jily): this is THE marauders fic for most ppl, and i just think of it as what happened canonically. no fic is perfect, but this should be every1’s first marauders era fic imo (you might’ve read this already cuz it’s SO popular). its from remus’ pov and it follows him throughout hogwarts and until (i think) poa or ootp

the wolf’s tail by myheadsgonenumb (wip, 457k words, no ships yet but prob wolfstar & jily): this one’s pretty underrated imo, and it’s SO WELL WRITTEN!!! this also follows remus throughout hogwarts. however id say the diff between this and atyd is that (so far at least) it focuses more on the war side of the marauders era, even when they are still young and at hogwarts. so if you’re interested in how actually dark and dangerous the times were back then, even for children, you will like this one! the only thing ill say for this is that its kinda very descriptive at points (ex. there’s a lot of newspaper clippings, book quotes, interview transcripts etc) but you can just gloss over them if you think they’re not that important. rn i think their 5th year just started, so keep that in mind (its gonna be a long one)!

the cadence of part-time poets by motswolo (completed, 980k words, wolfstar & jily): AAAAAAHHHH this one is my ALL TIME FAV (marauders era) FIC <33333 this is a muggle au, so no magic! this is also a remus pov (😭) and he goes to hawkings (which is basically hogwarts) in his (i think??) 4th year? or younger? smt like that :,). this fic also has my fav oc (tomny) hehe. as the tags say, its a band fic/au, but i’ll spoil no more!

the making of the map by fox_pitch (completed, 79k words, wolfstar & jily): this is a shorter one, but its also rlyyy good. pretty sure this starts and ends in their sixth year, but as the title suggests, its how the marauders map come to exist! its also how wolfstar gets together and its very cute and wholesome. the ending is kinda ambiguous in the sense that it doesn’t give any hints as to if anything changes in this fic’s universe’s future, but id assume not.

choices by messermoon (completed, 624k words, jegulus, wolfstar & jily): i kinda assumed you wanted the “canon” ships (aka jily and wolfstar) but if you’re interested in jegulus (james potter/regulus black) then this one is prob for you. i personally haven’t finished this fic, but ik its a jegulus classic/canon, just like atyd is for jily (& wolfstar). this one follows james, and it doesn’t start on his first year i think. it has alternating povs as well! however, as the tags warn, it is canon compliant, aka reg dies in the end, so do w that what you will :,)

only the brave by solmussa (completed, 646k words, jegulus, wolfstar, dorlene, rosekiller & pandalily): this is another jegulus fic! it has started being considered a classic and if you read it, you’ll understand why. this also does not start from their first year, and this one also has alternating povs! i love the writing and just general concept/plot of this one; i don’t love jegulus but i was still HOOKED w this fic, so yes. its rly good. and as you can see w the tags, this is a happy ending (aka, reg lives)!!!!! mwah love those.

art heist, baby! by otrbs (completed, 219k words, jegulus, wolfstar, dorlene, alice/frank longbottom - idk their ship name): i also have not read this fic, but ive only heard good things about it (and some sobs but that’s what you get for “major character death” : ) )! i know the ending of it tho, and it is kinda sad, so prepare yourself. it is a muggle au, and they basically wanna pull an art heist? yup lets go w that simple explanation.

Ooh okay! Hmm. (Putting under a cut now because apparently I can’t shut the fuck up and I pity y'all's dashboards.)

when I started shipping it if I did: I wouldn’t say I particularly ship either one, but I’ve read a few good fics. Definitely a Starcest shipper but I generally prefer them with James in a trio (sorry!).

my thoughts: Moonwater: RUDE SHIP NAME, first of all. God, y’all are brutal. 😆 I definitely think Sirius and Remus were involved at some point, but my Prongsfoot feels make it hard to see Remus as anything but a consolation prize after Sirius loses James. That said, I like the idea of Remus as a safe haven for Regulus in a setting where Reg and Sirius had a ton of conflict, better yet if Remus/Reg are hiding the relationship because Sirius and Reg are already estranged at that point. I can see Remus holding onto this fantasy that he can draw Reg away from his family’s expectations. Wolfstarcest just makes sense if you ship Starcest because of course Sirius and Remus lived together after Hogwarts, in a very “and they were roommates” capacity, so Reg moving in with them is very plausible and... y’know... one drink leads to another, leads to making out on the sofa leads to sudden eye contact and “Come here, baby. Come sit with us.”

What makes me happy about them: I think the happy in either ship comes from Remus providing the unconditional love that neither of them had growing up. He’s the rock, he’s the grounding figure and the mediator and the voice of reason, because you know those brothers are volatile fucking hotheads. In an AU I imagine he’s the one who’d talk Regulus out of joining the Death Eaters or encourage him to leave, whereas I think Sirius would feel so betrayed he’d just turn his back to avoid facing the pain. WAIT THAT’S NOT HAPPY. Jesus. These are not happy ships, damn it.

What makes me sad about them: Um, baby boy dies. Sirius goes to prison. And then dies. Remus finally finds love again and then? Anyone? DIES.

things I look for in fanfic: I haven’t ravaged these tags yet so I wouldn’t say I’ve looked for anything, but I always prefer canon-compliant/adjacent so I like that sweet-spot era between graduation and... the dying. I prefer Reg to be a bratty bottom in any scenario, but not passively submissive. Not necessarily a power bottom, but a needy one for sure. I think Remus would be able to tame him in a clever way, outsmart him even, but Sirius ain’t got the patience, he fights dirty.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Sirius, of course, is bequeathed to Harry. Reggie goes to James because Barty and Evan are a Bad Idea. I honestly don’t know who I’d put Remus with, probably someone else in the Order, Kingsley would be a good bet.

My happily ever after for them: I could potentially see an AU happy ending for Moonwater if Remus managed to pull him out of the dark before it was too late, but as for Wolfstarcest, I’m too diehard of a Sirry shipper to imagine Sirius with anyone else later in life.

who is the big spoon/little spoon: For both, Regulus is the little spoon who tries to be big and they’re like “lol cute” and ragdoll him back around where he belongs.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity: I think Remus and Reg would bond over intellectual shit, literature and magical theory and whatnot. I see Remus and Sirius being the classic rock bros who sit around getting high and listening to [self-insert favorite 70s musician] and talk about starting a band and Reggie makes fun of them and pretends not to like their stupid Muggle noise but he’s full of shit and they know it.

My take on SW in hogwarts.

I feel like Logan’s favorite class would be DADA and Finn would love transfiguration. Leo is a herbology and potions nerd.

Their patronuses would be (in my opinion)

Leo- Labrador retriever puppy. Labradors are a typical race of dog to use as service and emotional support animals. Cheetahs that grow up in captivity suffer from anxiety and are often given service dogs that grow up with them to help them deal with the stress. Leo has a very calming presence that definitely helps a lot with Logan’s insecurities and anxiety. Leo can also keep up very easily Harzy and his hyperactive personality.

Logan- cheetah. Cheetah’s are calculating and cunning creatures. They also tend to be very loyal to their families until they have to move on when they reach maturity. Cheetahs that grow up in captivity tend to be extremely anxious so professionals tend to give them emotional support dogs that grow up with them and help with the stress.

Finn- grey wolf. Very obviously wolves are very protective of their packs same as Finn is very protective of all his friends. Especially his boys. In wolf packs there is also no actual alpha the older wolves are wiser and therefore lead the pack. Which makes sense and since Finn is the oldest out of the three I thought it would be nice. Finn is also very diplomatic but he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty to defend someone he loves. He is fiercely protective of his boys and would do anything to protect them.

I know that in canon patronuses mirror your loved ones patronus. But I think that it would be nice for the boys to have patronuses that fit their individual personalities but compliment nicely with the other patronuses if you look at it from a critical point.

Houses

Leo is a hufflepuff that could pass off as slytherin and anyone who knows him is aware of that fact. He also sneaks into the kitchen with Regulus to cook because he loves it so much. He is also Regulus’s hufflebuddy.

Logan is a slytherin. People tend to put him in the “evil” category so he doesn’t have many friends outside his house except for Harzy until Finn introduces him to his friends (maybe the marauders or someone else).

Finn is a ravenclaw. He loves to read muggle classics and is incredibly smart. He can easily keep up with almost any conversation topic and loves to learn. He meets Logan in the train on first year and they become friends instantly.

Finn has some griffindor friends like Lily and Remus and they have a mini book club that Leo eventually joins and that’s where they meet. Logan knows Leo because Leo hangs out a lot at the slytherin common room with Reg and since he is a hufflepuff no one gives him shit (he also has enough sass to end anyone who tries to give him shit).

Harzy and Logan are both in the same year with Leo a year below them. Reg and Leo are on the same year. Snape and his gang of nazis once tried to get Reg to dump Leo... all I’m going to say is that Leo and Peeves vibe together and that Snape suddenly became a target of peeves and his pranks.

Logan is a muggle born. Finn is a half-blood. Leo is pure blood his family doesn’t associate with the likes of nazis and doesn’t discriminate against muggles and muggle borns therefore they are not a part of the sacred 28.

I’ll probably add more to this after I give it more thought
