i mentioned earlier i think riza's friendship with rebecca isn't as positive and close as a lot of the fandom makes it out to be. i want to expand more on that because i think it's very interesting and a pretty realistic depiction of what a lot of adult friendships can look like.
just as a recap for those who don't know who rebecca is (hi crossover mutuals), she's a lieutenant like riza though she's a lower rank which implies she joined the military after riza and was probably not part of the war, this is contextually relevant because it adds to the ways in which they don't fully relate to each other.
rebecca is extroverted, she's flirty and quick witted. she is dependable and knows what's up. she's cool, she's probably pretty popular, but she's also just starkly different to riza. who is quiet, introverted and has chronic resting bitch face.
i don't think she's a bad person or mean spirited. she's certainly flawed, but so is riza. i don't think the lack of closeness between her and riza happens as result of something being wrong with her or that being some kind of moral failure on her behalf.
however rebecca does things that can be perceived as hurtful. for instance she spends years moaning about how she's looking for a man to settle down with who can support her so she can quit the military to riza while knowing riza can never even hold hands with the person she loves in public (i mean things change, but for a solid 10 years that was her reality). we canonically see rebecca tell riza to her face that she thinks riza is having sex with superior officers just to get "promoted" (even though riza was actually being held hostage by bradley rip).
of course this is framed as a joke and joking between friends is all good but there's obviously a layer of genuine jealousy and perceived unfairness. we can only imagine what kind of comments she would make when riza is able to get married, or when she finds out she's related to grumman. and i don't even necessarily think rebecca would be entirely wrong, not because riza specifically is getting anything unfairly but because her circumstances suck. having to join the military or take any other shitty job to survive sucks. not being able to find a good partner when you long for that kind of relationship sucks. she's not wrong to feel some type of way about that, but none of that is riza's fault and riza has gone through so much trauma and hardship it's not fair to make her feel bad when things don't go wrong for once for her.
i think in a lot of ways rebecca is kind of like jessica stanley from twilight (no, i'm serious). a little vain and jealous but not necessarily wrong in what they want and never truly mean spirited. but because riza is such a polar opposite personality wise even when she doesn't take rebecca's comments to heart there's still an emotional distance between the two.
granted, riza also struggles somewhat with getting close to people. she's very empathetic but still feels a level of disconnection from society mostly because of how she was raised and partly because she's a war veteran. but point is, she often feels very alien. rebecca's quips and generally loud personality inherently puts a space between them preventing riza from feeling close to her. it's no one's fault, no one is the antagonist or in the wrong. it's just a compatibility thing.
if asked, riza would confirm rebecca is her friend. would call her a good friend even. but she would never describe her as her "best friend" or "soul sister" or anything along those lines.

Hello, I saw your post about being open for prompts and I had an idea about havocs gf in Central being Rebecca after all before they get relocated, could be angsty as hell, so if this might vibe with you... Just a thought
aaaah thank you sm!! this was a fun one bc i’ve not written havolina in a long time! thank u for getting me back into it with this wonderful idea hehe 💖 i hope you enjoy this lil sprinkle of angst
Jean closed his front door with a dejected sigh. Movement came from inside his apartment, so he knew she was already here. His eyes closed briefly, an attempt to collect his thoughts and steel himself for the upcoming conversation. It would be hard as hell.
“Hey,” Rebecca greeted him, popping her head into the hallway to offer him a beautiful smile.
Turning, he hid his forlorn look and paused, taking in her bright expression upon seeing him and the way her dark hair tumbled over her shoulder. An apron clung to her body and was dotted with red splashes of sauce. She was in the middle of cooking them dinner.
Jean’s chest tightened but he forced a smile through it, returning her greeting.
“I’ll be back in a few,” he stated. One of his hands lifted to grasp her waist lightly as he pecked her cheek. “I’m going to get changed.”
Rebecca said nothing but he could feel her eyes on him as he left her in the doorway to his kitchen.
“Okay…” She knew something was off, but then again he’d never been perfect at hiding his emotions. By God, did he try, but when it hurt this much it was hard.
Changing out of his uniform took far longer than it should have, mainly because once he’d changed, Jean sat down on his bed and didn’t move for ten minutes or so. He just stared at his bedroom wall, trying and failing miserably to come up with the words he needed to tell Rebecca he was being transferred away.
They were in the Academy together with Riza. The two of them had hit it off right from the start and he’d been smitten with her for years. They’d fooled around more than once… Multiple times. It was all fun and games though. Nothing serious. Not friends with benefits but not a relationship. It was casual, which suited them both, but recently Jean had realised that he didn’t want to be casual anymore. Neither did she.
For a few months they’d had something resembling a relationship. It was budding but it had been beautiful. That was also when Jean Havoc realised he’d fallen for Rebecca Catalina years ago but had never admitted it to himself. Even after fooling around and she’d dozed off, Jean had been content just to watch Rebecca sleep for a while and marvel at her features. He’d stroke her face and press a kiss to her forehead, a ritual of his after every night together in each other’s bed, then fall asleep.
And now, after finally coming together, they were being ripped apart.
“Jean?”
He blinked and returned to the present, finding Rebecca’s face right in front of his. She looked wary and worried at why he wasn’t moving, just staring into space in his bedroom. Shit!
“What’s wrong?” she asked. Her voice was even and controlled as she tried to discover the root of his suffering.
The words froze in his throat. If he voiced them aloud then it would become a reality. And he really didn’t want to leave her to go to Central.
“Come on,” she urged gently. Rebecca’s hands grasped his biceps and nudged him to stand from the bed. “Dinner’s almost ready.”
“Rebecca,” he whispered as emotion clouded his voice. Damn it! Don’t lose it now!
“Dinner is almost ready,” she repeated. One corner of her mouth quirked up. “I’m known as a shit cook and I don’t want to add any more fuel to that fire by burning our food.”
“I – I have to tell you something –” Jean was standing now, turning to face her as she gently but firmly made him walk out of the room.
“Later,” she promised. “Dinner first.”
“I can’t –” he started to argue. He couldn’t sit there in an uncomfortable silence because the weight of what had happened to him that day was hanging over him.
“You’re not the only one who works at Eastern Headquarters,” she reminded him softly.
A pained look crossed her face and Jean froze. She already knew.
“When a you, up and coming officer like Mustang gets promoted to Central, news travels fast,” she explained.
Rebecca walked around Jean to re-enter his kitchen. She busied herself over the stove as she turned dials and began to dish up.
“So, you already know?”
Rebecca nodded. Jean could tell by the set of her shoulders that she wasn’t happy about the news and that made things even worse. This was hurting her.
“We’re going to sit down to dinner. Have you washed up?”
Jean stared at her, watching her move. Why wasn’t she more upset about this? Or angry?
“Rebecca –”
“Have you washed up?” she asked, her tone more forceful than before.
Jean nodded. “Yes.”
“Then come and help me dish up the food.”
It smelled delicious and his stomach rumbled loudly, but it also twisted painfully, affecting his appetite.
“We are going to sit down to dinner,” Rebecca stated as she lifted her own plate and gestured for him to sit at his table. “Because I put far too much time and effort into it for us not to. Then,” she added, taking a deep breath. “We can talk about it. Although I don’t really know what there is to talk about. It’s going to happen and that’s a fact. Regardless, you clearly want to.” Her eyes lifted to meet his once she was seated. “So, we can,” she smiled.
“I don’t want to leave you,” Jean whispered. His food was forgotten before him, which truly was a crime because like Rebecca said, she’d spent time on this for him. No, for them. She’d made them dinner and had it ready for him coming home from work. He’d never had a girlfriend who’d put such an effort in before. They mostly just wanted to order in or expected him to cook instead. Rebecca had gone out of her way to make them something from scratch, and he found it to be a lovely gesture.
“I know,” she admitted quietly as she took a bite of her food.
“I tried…” he trailed off. “I tried to ask if you could come too but…”
“That would never happen,” Rebecca finished.
“No,” Jean conceded glumly.
“Well, we’ll just have to make the most of the time we have left,” she reasoned, her voice determined. Glancing up at him, she gestured towards him with her fork. “Eat,” she prompted. “Please.”
Jean picked up his fork and took a bite just to appease her, but found it was very tasty. He took another.
“Is that what you want?” Jean asked as he swallowed thickly.
“Want?” Rebecca frowned.
“Well, I mean, you don’t have to stay if you don’t want to –”
“I’m not going to let you finish that thought,” she interrupted.
“Why?”
“Because of course I want to stick around!” Rebecca exclaimed. “How could you think I wouldn’t?”
“Because…” Jean floundered. “I don’t know,” he admitted. He dropped his eyes to his plate. “I just wanted to give you an out,” he mumbled. “In case you wanted it.” His shoulders rounded in on themselves as he tried to hide from the painful feelings creeping in his chest. He had to give her that chance just in case she wanted it. He’d never ask her to wait around and wouldn’t expect it either. She was smart, quick-witted, and absolutely gorgeous. Rebecca was way out of his league, so he had to give her a chance to leave. He was nothing special to pine over.
Rebecca stood from her chair. She knelt beside him and took his face gently in between her hands. His head was turned to face her. “Of course I want to stay. I love you, Jean. And I’m willing to see this through if that’s what you want.”
“See this through?” he echoed, feeling something like hope creep up his chest, dousing the fire of some of the pain already residing there.
Rebecca nodded. “Absolutely. We have phones. We have letters. God, that would be so romantic,” she winked. “And we have annual leave. Central isn’t a million miles away from here,” she reminded him gently. “There’s trains. I will absolutely come visit.”
Jean wrapped his arms around her tightly. “I love you,” he whispered.
Rebecca gripped onto the back of his t-shirt tightly. “I love you too. I’m not going to give you up this easily, Jean Havoc!”
He pulled away, cupping her cheek lightly. “What did I ever do to deserve you?”
“Did you expect me to leave?”
He nodded, somewhat nervous. “It’s a lot of effort, long distance.”
“You’re worth it,” Rebecca promised.
Jean pulled her in tight again, but his face was a grimace. Despite having her on board and willing to try a long-distance relationship, it would still be hard. He didn’t know when they’d be leaving yet, so Rebecca was right. He had to make sure every moment counted. He would ensure he cherished every little moment they had left together, because after the move he had no idea when he’d see her in person again.
i know he goes on to “date” lust but ehhhh let’s call it undercover dating bc this is cute uwu (makes things even angstier tho bc he’d probably tell rebecca abt it to get the ok from her… oh boy, more relationship angst!)

022218 Warm Embrace
@b-griveros: It was nice to do a first collaboration with Mar;  she sent me the reference and I couldn’t get the image out of my head. I needed to draw.  And then, with this new perspective Marilyn captures perfectly the atmosphere between them two. I f*cking love this woman and I’m thankful she’s been inspiring and motivating me to improve over the past months. Thank you so much for existing, Marilyn, and I hope everyone gets a little warm ache in the chest.

“Come here.”
“Colonel.”
“Lieutenant, give me your hand.”
She didn’t lack the temptation, but - “At any moment, someone can walk in.”
“So Breda will let us know.”
“It’s really… it’s all right, I’m all right. Your coat… it’ll be enough.”
“No…” From his seat, he reached blindly for her hand. “Come here. ….just rest now.”
A mixture of determination, ire, concern, and adrenaline surged through her veins. Rebecca Catalina was hellbent on finding Riza, but even hell hath no fury like a woman on a mission to find her comrade-at-arms, her closest friend…
The only sister she’s ever known.
After victory was assured, amidst the mayhem, literal hours went on trying figure out which hospital Riza and the Colonel had been sent to and her heart plunged, desperation brimming at the cusp, because only Mustang’s wellbeing had been reported. What about his adjutant, the Lieutenant? She had asked. The blonde who was always next to him, where was she? She’s important too. If not more. The hours of radio silence felt like decades, and her exhaustion served to irritate her more than she already was. How difficult was it, really, to find someone who had been in the heart of it all? How do you misplace the decorated matchstick?
Eventually, coms were re-established and she pestered a military police officer who wasn’t shit. She successfully coerced the “sensitive information” she needed from the MP, commandeered the nearest vehicle she could find, and Rebecca floored it soon after.
Surprisingly, the roads maintained orderly traffic, but her destination… this hospital could only be properly described as jungle. The outside was busy with temporary medic tents erected outside of the building. The sheer amount of people, the amount of blood, the amount of disorganization. She faltered, momentum lost as the reality of their actions began to set in. She weaved through rushing doctors in bloodied coats, patients hobbling in crutches, and the injured yet to be processed.
Inside, the chaos crackled through the atmosphere like lightning with thunderous volume. Orders were shouted. People were crying, searching for relatives, hoping they were alive. The noise overwhelmed her internal ramblings. For that one second stolen breath, she thought to herself any one of these could have been Riza: wounded, missing an arm, or worse, killed in action.
Mustang’s battle had been won, to be sure, but it was the footsoldiers, the normies, and the people that didn’t use alchemy that took the brunt of someone else’s ideals. They were the ones that got burned. Each day that Riza was in Central, Rebecca worried that one day she might not call back. She threw away the notion that soldiers died valiantly for their cause, because no death was valiant enough to ever vanquish Riza Hawkeye. The feeling that she would possibly not come back felt like a knife to her ribs.
In between skirting through throngs of people, Rebecca wondered the extent of Riza’s injuries. She was thankful when she wasn’t immediately redirected towards the morgue, but her blood pressure began to rise at the thought she had sustained injuries for him. Her friend’s indomitable loyalty to the Flame Colonel was a mystery, despite her full disclosure as to why. No matter the amount of pleading Rebecca would do, Riza would not be moved; even when they went so far as to place her in a fucking hostage position as the Fuhrer’s - well, former Fuhrer’s assistant, she thought savagely as she turned down another corridor.
At the end of it, an innocuous pair leaned casually against the wall, but Rebecca knew a post when she saw it. Fuery noticed her quickly enough and Breda stood at attention soon after.
She didn’t care how she must look to the two of them, storming down the hallway at full tilt, hair a mess and blood staining her pants.Hands on her hip, she asked, “Are they in there?”
The older one raised his eyebrows. “They could be.” He turned to look down the hall. “Or they could be elsewhere.”
It was not the answer she was looking for. Her vexed glare shifted to the smaller one, “Is she in there?” Honestly, it was all she cared about. But if he was in there, she would be too.
She saw the Adam’s apple bobbing in Fuery’s throat. Rebecca had heard from Jean he’d been sent to the front lines in the south, but no matter how many times that crossed her mind, he still looked like a kid just out of the academy.
Breda sighed loudly as Fuery’s saving grace. “They’re both in there,”  Breda interrupted as he stepped forward. He dipped his head with his unfortunate haircut, urging her to do the same. “But it’s on a need to know basis. Better if they’re not disturbed,” he said lowly.
Rebecca scoffed. “For the love of-” She was interrupted by stretchers being carried past them, like a procession. Some were covered. She whispered with exasperation, “What, are they fucking in there?”
Fuery choked inelegantly and Breda’s brow flattened. “If you have to, then go in quietly. They’re refusing treatment until everyone else is taken care of. Pretty reckless if you ask me, considering the Lieutenant’s condition.”
Rebecca began to vault forward and she nearly tore off the arm that was set in front of her.
“We’ve already tried to convince her.” Breda’s voice betrayed the exhaustion she knew they were all feeling, in the comedown from hours of adrenalin and gunfire.  “She refuses to get seen until he does and vice versa. If you really know her, then you know how stubborn she is - both of them are.”
Rebecca frowned.
“But there aren’t enough doctors to go around,” said Fuery, as if he caught on to her displeasure in Breda’s answer. “There are too many wounded, even more dead,” he continued solemnly, like he knew it first hand. She supposed he did. The field of battle today wouldn’t have been a far cry from his stint in the south.
“Go in, if you can promise to be quiet.”
She rose an eyebrow that said, “Me? Quiet?”
The two of them glared at her, clearly not buying it.
She threw up her hands in surrender, and after a moment he opened the door for her.
She walked into a small room, the kind of waiting rooms designed for family members to privately wait for a relative’s operation or the like. When the door closed behind her, it was as if the maelstrom outside simply faded away into obscurity. Here, the room was washed in a softer spring light. It was a significant contrast to the hard, sterile fluorescents outside, free from the turmoil outside, like a separate, tranquil haven from the rest of the world. In here it was like the Promised Day was a figment of her imagination; a hazy machination conjured up in the midst of a fevered dream. It made no sense for such an undisturbed space to exist alongside the events of today.
Until, she spotted them and her heart pulsed out of her chest.
In the corner, crowded on one of the more comfortable armchairs, they rested, curled up against each other. They were unmoving and silent, but their sounds of sleep filled the room once she toned out the noise outside. She stepped closer. Her muddied boots suddenly seemed far too loud - but they didn’t stir.
There was so much blood; it horrified her. It splattered on her friend’s cheeks, stained her clothes and hair, and smeared his hands; which, she realised had deep cuts in the middle of them. The blood had obviously congealed in an effort to stem the flow of bleeding, but Rebecca could still see it glistening on the back of his hands, sluggish and dark with oxidisation. Despite his injuries, his hands clasped over her sleeping figure in a protective hold like she was his lifeline or better, to hold her steady while she was wearing so thin.
It couldn’t have been very comfy, she surmised, huddled together like with the cuts and blood and sweat, limbs bunched up over his. She studied Riza’s face, pale and anemic, even under the softer afternoon light; how her ashen complexion only served to highlight the dark and sagging skin under her eyes - like she hadn’t slept well for weeks. Her expression told another story. The lines Rebecca had become familiar with were gone. The tension in her body had vanished. It looked like it was the best damn sleep she’s had in a long time. And he wasn’t wearing that stupid coat because she was.
Crossing arms over her chest, Rebecca favored and shifted to one leg, sighing, and without wanting to, Rebecca smiled.
The sneak, she went and found herself a nice man in Central before her.

In Uniform: A Kissing Booth
Prompt Day 7 of Royai Week 2018
Read Full Text on AO3 or FFN
Length:  1,641 words
Rated:  T
Status:  Incomplete (1/4)
Summary:   Sparks fly at the annual Autumn fair when Central University's ROTC program hosts a kissing booth. Cadet Hawkeye swears she won't find herself in the hot seat. Cadet Major Mustang vows that he won't get a little too familiar with his favorite subordinate.
Pucker up, buttercup. Some promises are made to be broken.
Chapter 1
Cadet Riza Hawkeye was in the habit of keeping her word.  It was for this reason, and absolutely no other, that she found herself in dress blues, complete with the skirt, standing under a glittery homemade sign that read “In Uniform:  A Kissing Booth.”  Suffice it to say Cadet First Lieutenant Rebecca Catalina was a bit too good at securing promises first and filling in the details later.
Granted, it could be worse.  It could always get worse, Riza reminded herself as she accepted Jean Havoc’s third ticket of the night.  She could be the one doing the kissing instead of collecting the tickets.  And, as Becca stressed (at length) if a fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital wasn’t a worthy cause, nothing was.
“When are you up, Hawkeye?” Jean asked as he enthusiastically took the next available place in Rebecca’s queue.  He threw a wry smile at his former compatriot, supported heavily by a pair of crutches.
Riza shot him a pointed look in return.  “When are you re-enrolling in the ROTC, Havoc?”
“Touché.”  Jean chuckled raising his arms as much as his crutches would allow in mock surrender.
“I might around to it,” he added with a matter-of-fact tone.  “Near fatal car accidents have a way of putting things in perspective, Riza.  And if I want something,” he cast his gaze in Rebecca’s direction, watching with soft eyes as she waved off her most recent suitor, “I’m done telling myself that I can’t have it before I even try.  And, if you don’t mind me saying, maybe you should do the same.  Screw the regs.”
A blush crept up in the blonde’s cheeks, and she shuffled the tickets in her hands with more interest than the small pieces of cardstock warranted.  “I have no idea what you mean by that,” she lied, but fate gave her little time to recover.

The Sweetest Sin
AO3 Pairing: Jean Havoc / Rebecca Catalina Words: 4141 Genre: Romance, Comfort Warnings: Smut
Candlelit table, sweet wine, steak sizzling on each of their plates, and a large bouquet in an elegant vase in between them - it was the perfect definition of a dinner date according to Havoc. After what happened with Solaris, or Lust , he swore to himself that he’d never go out on a date with someone who’d ask him first; it was a defense mechanism. However, he truly felt that that was never going to happen anyways, not with his legs laying useless like this. It was a day well-spent at the family store; he was just about to close up until a familiar face arrived at the door.
Rebecca Catalina.
Candlelit table, sweet wine, steak sizzling on each of their plates, and a large bouquet in an elegant vase in between them - it was the perfect definition of a dinner date according to Havoc. After what happened with Solaris, or Lust, he swore to himself that he’d never go out on a date with someone who’d ask him first; it was a defense mechanism. However, he truly felt that that was never going to happen anyways, not with his legs laying useless like this. It was a day well-spent at the family store; he was just about to close up until a familiar face arrived at the door. Rebecca Catalina. He met her during his time at Eastern Headquarters; they became acquainted enough for him to be able to rely on her bringing the reinforcements he prepared to Mustang during the Promised Day. He smirked as she walked up to the counter.
“Nice to see a pretty face around here; all I see are these rugged men who come and go, haha. I was just about to close up, what brings you here, Catalina?” Havoc turned his wheelchair so that he could face her. Her face carried a friendly grin. “Looks like I caught you at the right time, eh? I was in the area for a while and thought I’d drop by. How’re you holding up?” He handed her a cup of coffee left over from the pot, which she gladly took. “I’m still young and strong, I’ll be alright.” Rebecca took a sip of her coffee and looked up to see the merchandise in the showcases around the counter. He wasn’t lying when he said that his family general store literally carried everything, from groceries to stationery items to toys to alcohol and cigarettes and other various jarred goods. It wasn’t hard to believe that he’d been able to carry a black market for weapons in here. With her gaze still focused on the showcases of alcohol behind him, she asked him, “Hey, do you want to get dinner with me later today?”
Ash fell from his cigarette. “Y-you mean like a date?” His shoulders tensed up a bit. “Yeah. I mean, only if you want to. It’s not like we, single people, got plans or shit for dinner. So, I figured…” Havoc burst out laughing at that line. Maybe it was ok. Besides, he trusted her. “Ok, you got me there, hehe. Alright, I’ll bite, the Serenade at 7 do ok for you?” She nodded and headed to the door.
“Oh yeah, one more thing…” Her hair swished to the side of her shoulder as she turned around to face him. “That beard does not suit you at all.” His cigarette fell from his mouth.
:::
The restaurant definitely wasn’t a five-star, but it was elegant enough for Rebecca’s luxurious tastes. Havoc arrived around ten minutes before 7 o'clock. He had already booked their reservations and had taken a seat at their table with his wheelchair beside him. His chin still prickled from his recent mandatory clean shave. He wore a well-fit grey waistcoat with a tucked white button up and a red tie underneath, and his black slacks made him look well put-together. His dark overcoat hung over his chair sloppily. The table was, well, his definition of a perfect, elegant dinner date setting, with the added touch of the bouquet of roses he’d bought. He had just begun to light his cigarette when Rebecca interrupted him by placing an envelope on his head.
“Here. For you.”
As soon as he caught a glimpse of her, his mouth involuntarily went agape. The attraction had been there for a pretty long time, tracing back to his days in the East, but it had never been so in-his-face enough for Havoc to even realize his infatuation with her. Well, not until now. Rebecca’s hair was kept down and stopped short just below the small of her back. It was the first time he had ever seen her like this. Her curls framed her face which she lightly adorned with a bit of mascara and red lipstick. Her dark green slip dress was snug against her curves and looked absolutely stunning on her. She chuckled a bit after seeing Havoc staring at her with his mouth open. “Aren’t you going to check what’s in it?” Her question pulled him out of his daze. He stumbled to pick up the envelope that had fallen during his reverie.
“What is this?”
“As much as I hate playing the messenger, Riza told me Colonel Mustang wanted to give this to you.”
He opened it and found nothing but a photo of Team Mustang in it, no letter. Typical Colonel. Jean stared at it with a longing gaze.
“You know, Jean... There aren’t many brave men like you, and Lord knows how many cowards I’ve seen in Amestris.” Rebecca shrugged off jokingly.
Havoc smiled at her and rolled up his sleeves. “I don’t think I’m done just yet. I’m going to re-enlist once I’m done with rehab.”
“Oh? Well, I hope for a speedy recovery!”
They settled down and ordered classic steak for the both of them along with a bottle of wine. “Here, I bought you roses,” he grinned and handed her the bouquet. She thanked him and went on to smell them. The sight of her holding roses up to her nose with small strands of hair falling off her face almost made Havoc whisper ‘Goddess’ out loud. “You look very beautiful, you know? I must be hella special and blessed to be able to see you like this, haha,” Havoc joked. “Are you flirting with me, 2nd Lieutenant Havoc?” Her words strung out of her mouth deliciously slow. “Well, this is a date, isn’t it? And haven’t you heard? I’m not in the military anymore. You can call me Jean.” Havoc looked at her mockingly with hooded eyes and a stupid grin. Rebecca tinged a deep red. “Well, you clean up pretty well, Jean. I see you shaved, too. That’s a relief,” Rebecca took a sip out of her wine while Havoc rolled his eyes at her. “The beard wasn’t that bad--” “It was,” she retorted before he could finish. The waiter came with their steaks and filled their glasses halfway through with wine. In between the waiter’s arms arranging the food, Rebecca caught Havoc’s steaming face and giggled to herself.
They ate in comfortable silence. Havoc looked up startled when Rebecca clanged her fork and knife against her plate. “Havoc, can I stay at your place tonight?” He almost choked on his steak. “Y’see, it’s late and my hotel’s way too far... Not to mention, I checked out of it already since it’s way too expensive, ahahaha…” She murmured out the last part but Havoc still heard it. “Is that the real reason why you went on this date with me?” he glared at her. Rebecca scratched the back of her head and laughed nervously. “Well, not entirely. I wanted to catch up with you and stuff, and I was worried about your recovery…” she mumbled while swirling her cup of wine and looking down at her lap with a light blush on her face. “Can’t you do this for an old friend, hm?” Jean sighed loudly and conceded. “Okay, you can stay for however long you want.” Rebecca practically beamed at Jean. His face reddened.
:::
The two had drunk quite a bit before taking a taxi to Havoc’s place. Cheerful laughter emerged from the hallway to Havoc’s apartment. His mother insisted on him staying at the family house when he was transferred to the Eastern hospital but he politely refused. He decided to rent out the apartment he had lived in before while he was in Grumman’s command. With the click of his key, the both of them entered his place. Rebecca was shocked by how homely he managed to make it despite only living here for a little less than a year. She placed her bag on one of the couches before looking around. Beige walls surrounded her in which he had hung various pictures of his family and generic pieces of painting. He had a single bedroom, a tiny kitchen by the entrance, and a living room which they were standing in at the moment.
“You can sleep in the bedroom, I’ll just stay on the couch.”
“But, Jean, your legs…”
He grins. “Are you worried about me?” Rebecca scowled at him.
“I’m sleeping on the couch and that’s that, good night,” she declared before laying down on the couch and closing her eyes with her eyebrows knit together. He chuckled before rolling his wheelchair away only to return with a blanket to tuck her in with.
:::
Several hours passed. Rebecca couldn’t get a single wink of sleep. You’d think after the amount of wine she drank with Havoc, she’d have been very drowsy but that didn’t seem to be the case. She frowned at the lumpy couch she was on before getting up to get a glass of water. She downed the cup in one go, and before she could go back to the living room, she heard a strange clicking noise from Havoc’s room. She peeked inside and saw him having a smoke by the window with a glass and a bottle of bourbon beside him on the table and his hands fiddling with the lid of his lighter. He turned around from his chair to find Rebecca at his doorway. Her hair had seen tamer days and one of the straps on her dress was falling off her shoulder. He took his cigarette out of his mouth and looked at her with a grin. “Couldn’t sleep?” She shook her head.
She approached him and sat on top of the table. Havoc stared at the gleaming stars in the sky and the silent city in front of him. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” he took a drag from his cigarette and glanced at Rebecca. She grinned at him and nodded. “Here, check this out.” He caught her attention and made her watch as he proceeded to use his lighter to crack open the cap off the bourbon bottle. He poured her a glass but she shot him a cheeky smile and took a swig straight from the bottle. She grimaced from the sickly sweet taste yet still gulped down another draft. Havoc could only blink at her with the glass he was going to hand her still in his hand as she deftly drank.
He sighed in relief after seeing that she set down the bottle with it being more full than he thought it would be. “You do know that that has a lesser percentage of alcohol in it than ordinary whiskey, right?” he remarked at her. She squinted at him and cursed under her breath. She pressed two fingers on her forehead in exasperation. “You’re telling me I drank some shit that tasted like straight up sugar, and it didn’t even have enough alcohol to help me get a buzz?” He held his hands up in mercy. “You need better alcohol, ya damn lightweight.” she shook her head at him and pulled up the strap on her dress. He chuckled at her comment and took another drag from his cigarette. “Doctor’s orders, sweetheart. I’m sorry.” She scoffed and knit her eyebrows together. “I hope that bitch who did this to you is rotting somewhere in hell.” Jean smirked at her in agreement.
“Well, I don’t think I’d ever get this special treatment from the one and the only Rebecca Catalina if this didn’t happen to me.” She shot him a glare and folded her arms. “I’m not handing you any of my pity. I don’t have time for that,” she huffed.
“...Well, shit. If I have to lose both of my legs just for that one pretty lady who I have my eyes on to give me attention, then, so be it.”
“Let’s not forget that a “pretty lady who you had your eyes on” was the one who fucking made you lose them in the first place.”
He chuckled lightly at her retorts and said, “You’re different, Becky. I trust you.” He thought she’d join in on his laughter, but he looked up only to find her examining him intently. It felt as if she could see right through his blue eyes. He was definitely a sight to see. It was one thing to see him all dressed up for a date, but looking at him when he’s by the moonlight with his hair tousled up and his blue eyes drowsy but still managing to look so bright was really...something else. Not only that but one or two of his buttons were open and his red tie was wrapped loosely around his collar. He cocked his head to the side and looked at her with a puzzled look on his face. She leaned down, supporting herself on his armrests, and whispered in his ear, “You know, Jean? I really like you...and I don’t think I’ll ever meet another man like you, so I’m not taking any more chances of losing you.” She grabbed him by the tie and pressed her lips against his. Havoc widened his eyes with shock before closing them and kissing her back. He tasted bitter with the overwhelming smell of ash, but it felt so intoxicating for her and the sweet tinge of the whiskey from before made the experience even more indulging.
She peered into his face searching for signs of whether she did something he wasn’t comfortable with, but Havoc was already placing his hands around Catalina’s hips and pulling her in closer for more. She breathed flush against his face, the tip of her upper lip touching his. “Can I sit on your lap?” Havoc chuckled and shook his head at her genuine concern before grabbing her thighs and pulling her onto his lap. Her dress rode up all the way to the point where the hem was flush against her belly. She flinched from the touch of his cold hands against her thighs. “I can take it, babe,” he said with hooded eyes and proceeded to kiss the side of her jaw. She fumbled with his tie and buttons as she pressed light kisses around the side of his neck. His hands dug deeper into her thighs as she bit harder. By the time she managed to pull off his button-up, his neck was blooming with red bruises.
Her gaze fell to his well-defined abs, sculpted from years of military training. Her fingers slowly found their way to his skin and felt the slow rise of his chest with every breath. She noticed his blue eyes staring daggers at her face; his usual bright blue irises twisted from lust into a dark blue. She bit her lip with impatience. She needed to have him.
He groaned in pain as he carried his body to the bed with Rebecca holding onto both of his arms tightly. She laid him down and kneeled over the dirty blond man with his tie between her fists. Havoc smirked at her, seemingly recovered from before and interested in where she was taking things. “My body is yours, Becky.” He held out his arms giving her full access. Rebecca giggled at his easy submission. She wrapped the tie around his eyes and bit his cheek. He could see absolutely nothing and the darkness was daunting. He heard her movement to the side of him and wondered what she had in store for him. It was a few seconds until he heard the sound of her clothing hitting the corner of his room. He suddenly jerked up as he felt her pulling down his slacks and boxers. “What are you doing? You already know I can’t feel anything down there!” he growled, eyebrows bearing deep furrows. He hissed as her palm pushed him back down. “Relax, Jean.” She kissed his lips and drew circles on the back of his hand. “Do you trust me?” His mouth opened slightly in uncertainty before he finally nodded and laid back down with an unsure frown on his face.
Rebecca started slow; she wrapped her fingers around the head of his cock and jerked it up and down, making it rise. She leaned down from beside him and Jean winced as he felt her bare breasts against his upper body while she licked the side of his neck. Her playfulness made him cross his arms over his face in an attempt to cover the deep shade of red growing on his cheeks; the sight simply made her snicker. She maneuvered her tongue down his chest and sharply bit his nipple making him let out a moan before he could stop himself. He gasped as he felt her sucking on it lightly, and his mouth oped with heavy breaths as she escalated her movements. Still continuing her steady strokes on his member, she used her free hand to remove one of his arms from his face and guided it down between the brunette’s thighs. He flinched at how wet she was but eagerly started rubbing her clit.
She moaned his name in his ear and squeezed her thighs together with his hand still pressed between them. Rebecca was caught off guard when he pushed two thick fingers into her with no warning. Her body squirmed under his touch and her limbs felt like jelly from pleasure, and that made her jerking irregular and erratic. It took a while before his shaft was fully erect, but she managed. Jean felt a blow against his ear and quivered. “Jean, I don’t know how many times I’ve imagined this…” She took in a harsh breath before continuing, ”...exact situation before with you. You always did stand out as the most attractive guy in the academy.” Even without seeing his face, she knew he had a shit-eating grin on it. “Even if you were probably the biggest dumbass, too.” He curled his fingers inside her and rubbed her g-spot, practically forcing her to heave out a breath from the sensitivity.
“Oh yeah? A dumbass got you feelin’ some type of way, hm? Tell me more.” he smirked as he roughly thrusted his fingers into her. Catalina bit on his ear to force her moan back down, but when he hit her sweet spot again, she couldn’t hold back and groaned as she rocked her hips on his fingers. She streaked her tongue from his belly all the way back to his neck and bit. “I’d always wanted to take control and fuck you-” she kissed his neck before continuing, “Fuck you till you moan shamelessly, but looks like I’m doing more of the moaning tonight.” He let out a sigh as she nibbled lightly along the apple of his neck. She grinded against his fingers and continued her playful ministrations on his jawline before biting his lower lip and kissing him viciously. He groaned into their kiss and inserted a third finger into her. She pressed a finger against his nipple as she entwined her tongue with his. Her hand found itself palming his erection before lightly squeezing his balls.
:::
Havoc grunted as his body tensed from the new pulsing sensations he was experiencing. A tingling sensation? An orgasm? It felt similar. Yet dulled out. He never thought he’d be able to feel one again ever since he lost feeling. It felt...amazing. It was like what would be the opposite of the frequent phantom pains he felt. As if his muscles were tensed for so long and they’d finally eased up. His head finally came to rest back on the pillow as he started to recover.
Rebecca’s gentle jerking motion came to a stop as his release spilled over her fingers. She slipped off the blindfold, and Havoc looked at her with dilated eyes as she licked the cum off her fingers. “That was...incredible. Holy shit. I could never do it while jerking off.” he gasped in astonishment. She frowned at him. “Ok, too much information? Besides, all it takes is an experience with the mind.” “And a sexy woman.” She smirked as she felt his hand grip her thigh. He let his eyes wander over her slender but compact body. He was definitely awestruck. It was either by the way her thick hair enshrouded her body, or by how perfect her full breasts were - even if she thought they were uneven, or by the way her muscles and scars proved how strong and rugged she was - as if Jean needed proof of whether Rebecca was strong or not. Either way, her body left him feeling dumbfounded.
“You’re so fucking beautiful.” He couldn’t help but let those words slip out of his mouth after seeing her. As if on instinct, he pulled her on top of him so that she was straddling his stomach. She looked at him with a perplexed expression. He cupped her ass and moved her in closer. “You think I’m just going to let you finish without tasting you?” She threw back her head and comically laughed at him. “Okay, ashtray. Let’s see what you got.”
She inched her body forward till she was above his face. Her body shuddered as she felt his nose poking into her, his hot breath against her skin, and his five o’clock shadow prickling her thighs. He dragged one long swipe of his tongue against her and she was already clenching. His fingers dug into her hips to support her weight. And as soon as she got comfortable, he started swirling his tongue against her.
:::
Jean Havoc is a sexy, sexy man. He’s definitely the type of playboy who has dated several women, and by “dated” he probably means he’s had a one-night stand with them. Nevertheless, he was experienced - definitely explored all his tricks and techniques to near perfection. And it absolutely showed, from how he only had to use his tongue to make Rebecca a moaning, hot mess who was currently violently riding his face and desperately trying to keep her grip on the headboard.
The dim moonlight illuminated the room and made the sweat glisten on their bodies. Jean alternated between taking it slow to leaving her squirming. Every time she was getting close he’d suck her clit painstakingly slow. Of course, Rebecca didn’t hesitate to call him an ass while he was at it, but then he had to do that knowing chuckle. His voice vibrated against her and the mere feeling made her jolt.
“Oh?” he grinned under her. He pulled her in closer and nipped at her clit before humming against it.  She nearly yelped at the sensation and at that, she lifted her thighs. “Don’t tease me, ashtray.” “Okay, okay, princess,” he relented as he pulled her back down and kissed her clit. “I’ll let you get what you want.”
His tongue dipped into her and she tasted of pure ambrosia. He rolled it around switching it up between tracing letters of love on her bud and plunging it into her and licking all her juices. She wanted to thank whoever taught him how to twist the muscle of his tongue the way he did, God probably. Every time she pulled on his hair, he’d groan, and every time he groaned under her she was that much closer to losing her mind. But, she couldn’t help herself.
She was close. He knew she was getting close. She rocked her hips in a rhythm much faster, and he tried his best to match her speed. Her eyes were tearing up and she had to bite her lower lip to silence her gasps that were getting a little too loud. She couldn’t hold back the moan that came out when he stuck his middle finger in her, pumping into her with reckless abandon. All it took was his middle finger to curl itself inside her and a harsh suck on her clit before she came, pulsating, muscles clenching with every lick he took after to savor her taste.
The room went silent except for her small pants. Jean kissed a path from her folds down her thighs; love bites followed where his lips tread. Rebecca sat back on his chest with sweaty curls and a lazy smile plastered on her face. “I might just have to excuse the fact that you’re not rich to see you as the perfect man for me.” She grinned, entwining her fingers with his. “You might as well have me wrapped around your little finger because I’d be willing to get you anything you want. No matter the cost.” He held her chin to kiss her parted lips.
“Well you’re lucky, coz all I want is you.”

PREVIOUS CHAPTER NEXT CHAPTER
He hates being reduced to the role of civilian – a convalescing civilian, even more. He hates the red tape that surrounds his recovery; hates that Riza still hasn’t come out of her coma like the doctors said she would.
The aftermath of the Promised Day isn’t pleasant for anybody involved.
He drifts in and out of consciousness as the constant stampede of footfalls beat a lulling tempo that is comforting as much as it is desensitising. He jolts himself awake every once in a while, and Riza simply squeezes his hand lightly every time. It’s hard to resist the temptation to let himself fall asleep properly, but his bones and muscles are protesting and coupled with the familiar smell of Riza that make it easy to drift off.
He’s vaguely aware of the vibrations under his feet and Riza’s hand on his back. It’s a hazy sort of existence that he finds far too easy to slip into further.
She suddenly moves against him and her tone is frantic. He’s awakened by the sudden movement, the volume coming from his left, and he’s confused for a moment as he opens his eyes and sees nothing but deep, dark abyss. It all comes rushing back to him and he tenses as her voice becomes more panicked.
“No, you can't take me from him I need to-”
"Ma'am you need to come with us now, we need to have a doctor look at your injuries-"
"Look at his!" Her voice is cracking and straining in ways that he knows must not be good for her – he would wager that she's in a lot of pain right now. Her hand is gripping his shoulder tightly, to the point where he can feel her fingernails digging in again once more – not enough to hurt, but enough for him to realise just how much she is holding back.
She coughs suddenly, gasping for air and he knows her well enough to know that if she pushes herself any further she will hurt herself and he will not put her in anymore danger if he can help it – for too long she has guarded his back and fended off whatever bullets, literal and metaphorical, have been aimed his way.
Enough is enough. He will not have her rendered useless for his sake.
"Hawkeye," he says softly, his hand slipping down from her neck to curl into her hair again. He tugs softly, and mourns for the stability she will no longer provide. It will be hard to exist here in the dark with only Briggs and Central soldiers to tell him what to do, what is happening. He hates being useless and he's a little affronted at how easy it was of Truth to bring him down to his knees – he supposes that's his human arrogance shining through once more.
My alchemy will help people. Joining the military will save citizens.
He sighs, and loses his grip on her hair. "You need to go. Please."
"No, I won't, they need to take care of you -"
"They will," he reassures her, his heart breaking at how anguished she sounds – she practically bled out on stone for the sake of him and he cannot take any more blood on his hands. He has taken and taken and taken as an alchemist and completely disregarded what it meant to be one for the state, regardless of how fraudulent the position truly was.
A state alchemist works for the behalf of the people.
What a load of bullshit.
"You need to be seen, Hawkeye," he continues, pushing a little on her shoulder with his injured hand as best he can manage, grimacing slightly. "That girl said the alchemy was only a temporary fix."
"Your hands – your eyes-"
He smiles ruefully. "I will be okay. The wounds were relatively clean."
"But-"
"Lieutenant..." He rakes his other hand through his hair, unable to hide the scowl as pain shoots through his palm. "I need you to do this, for me. You're no good to me injured." He raises his head to where he hopes the medic is standing. The sun hits his face fully, and it’s strange how he can feel its warmth but no longer the burn. He's fairly certain that the majority of the triage tents are near him, so it's not like he will be far from her anyway. This calms him a little, abruptly realising just how panicked he felt, blood rushing through his ears and his heart feeling like it's been lost in his stomach.
"Please take good care of her," he says and all of a sudden she is taken from him and he feels bereft, alone and very frightened of a world that is no longer tangible beyond the ground he feels under his boots.
It is a while before he can no longer hear her sobs, but every second he can is a cruel kind of torture. He focuses on his breathing: in, out, in, out. He blinks too, surprised at the tears that run down his cheeks. Part of him understands it is to be expected – the high from the adrenaline is quickly wearing off, and all he is left with is aching in his hands and in his eyes.
He counts the seconds and the minutes, tongue tapping a beat on the roof of his mouth. He whispers old war songs under his breath, old curses he heard in fragments on the sandy battlefield of Ishval. He whispers her name in same cadences of his awfully accented Ishvallan: an old prayer murmured over firesides and in cramped cots, shared in one breath and in none at all.
He is sure Ishvalla is not listening, never to a murderer who slaughtered His people with nary a thought: but he will take any deity listening right now – anything that is more benevolent than Truth.
The shouting and screams and shrieks around him never ends and eventually a soldier guides him into another tent, sitting him down on what feels like a better-constructed cot. Another one comes in and says something about medical attention being given to him shortly, but Roy doesn't hold his breath. His head feels cloudy now, the pain dulling in a way he's certain isn't conducive to healing but he will not make a fuss – so long as his men are tended to, he will get through. He refuses to let anybody else under his watch get hurt in the line of duty for the sake of him.
More seconds and minutes pass and the acrid smell of smoke still lingers in the air. There is a breeze – it escapes into his tent every so often and he's grateful for the reprieve from a stagnant air.
"Colonel!"
He wants to say he feels the vibrations of her heavy gait before he hears her, but in all honesty he jolts with shock as Catalina abruptly appears into his space, panting and loud and sudden.
"Lieutenant," he replies, coughing. "Please tell me you're not my medical assistance."
Catalina snorts. "Nah, I'm shit at first aid. I should probably take a course or something after this." Her voice is surprisingly chipper despite their circumstances. "I'm here to pass on news. I just saw Riza."
He stills, before lifting his head to where her voice is coming from. "What did the medics say?"
Catalina huffs. "They were trying to do surgery but I overheard the nurse say that it was beyond their capabilities here. She's been transferred to a hospital over in the Seven Oak district. I figured you'd wanna know – y’know, being her superior and all." Catalina’s voice is dripping with innuendo and Roy would like nothing more than to dress her down because they’re in the middle of serious situation but all he can find the energy to focus on is the well-being of his precious subordinate.
"What?" It's an answer he's not expecting and immediately worst-case scenarios are racing through his mind. "That girl - she fixed Riza in seconds, this should be no problem for a-"
"They wanted to play it safe I guess," Catalina interrupts, her tone far too casual for Roy’s liking. "In any case I'm sure you'll need to have further care once you get out of here..." She doesn't make any sound for a while and Roy assumes she is thinking. "How long have you been here?" she asks quickly, moving around him and opening what sounds like tin cases.
He laughs bitterly. "More than an hour at least. I'm alright. How is everyone at Radio Capital?"
"Right as rain," Catalina replies grabbing one of his hands and all of a sudden there's a burning sensation on his wounds as she roughly yanks the torn glove off his hand.
"Fucking hell Rebecca!"
She sniggers and he tries to pull his hand out of her grip but she's like iron. "Stop it," she admonishes, swabbing down the inside of his palm turning his hand over to wipe the exit wound a little more carefully this time. "It's not good to leave wounds like this – even I know this much."
"You're a bitch Catalina," he says grumpily and she laughs heartily, pressing gauze onto his wound and fixing it with what he assumes is surgical tape. She repeats the process with his other hand, much more carefully this time – less pressure, and at least fifty percent less antiseptic: the cotton swab she is using retains at least some of its softness amidst the searing pain that slips under his skin. Instead of a dull ache, his hands actively feel like they’re on fire and being frozen simultaneously and Roy doesn’t know whether to curse her or begrudgingly thank her.
"There!" she announces, shifting back from him. "I've saved some poor sod from having to spend more time with you than absolutely necessary."
"The great country of Amestris thanks you for your valuable service," he says dryly, pulling his hands back into his person. She swats him on the shoulder lightly.
"Stop being such a baby Mustang, you're going to be fine. I'm going to go yell at a nurse until someone comes to gives you proper medical attention. I'll make sure that they send you onto Seven Oaks as well. Can't separate the dynamic duo of East for too long – you'll just start another coup until you find her."
"Hilarious, Catalina," he replies shortly and she laughs loudly in response.
"I'm sure I'll see you later on anyway – give Riza a kiss for me when you see her – I got kicked out of surgery before I could manage to-"
"YOU DID WHAT???"
"BYE COLONEL!" She calls back loudly, and then he is left with the faint shouting in the background and stinging in his palms that he knows is good but by this point Roy is just exhausted and ready to sleep for a very long time.
Eventually medics make their way past his tent and apologise profusely for leaving him unattended but he doesn't care anymore. He asks after his men, asks to be sent to Seven Oak. He is sure the doctor and the nurse taking care of him are sharing looks but he doesn't care. He just wants this day to be over, and to be within touching distance of Riza once more.

Author: MaiKusakabe Continuity: Brotherhood/Manga Length: 40-50k Pairings: Roy/Olivier, Ed/Winry (background), pre-Al/Mei (background) Rating: E (explicit) Tags: (possible) explicit sexual content, crossover with Harry Potter, language Major warnings: No
Fic #6: The Devil in the Desert Sun
Summary: Roy Mustang is stuck in a rut. And by “a rut,” he explicitly means Cameron, the Eastern ghost town wherein he is investigating his latest story. After he is so rudely ousted from his job as Editor-In-Chief of the Central times on the Führer’s executive order, all he can do is hope to redeem himself to the public by solving a case that has eluded federal and local investigators for years. And so Roy hunts for the Alchemist, a serial killer with a habit of leaving things called “transmutation circles” on the bodies of their victims. When he makes the acquaintance of an activist with a missing best friend and a strange knack for the Alchemist’s own state-restricted secrets, Roy’s suspicions that the Amestrian Military has something to do with the murders are only furthered. Conspiratorial leanings aside, Roy has to get to the bottom of the truth before the case can upend the lives of the very people he’s trying so hard to protect. If only he were as good at keeping everyone safe as he was at starting wildfires.

Fic #7: A Lesson in Distraction
Summary: His goals hadn’t, and would never be without trials. Mistakes had, and would be made; he was only human after all, but he had no intention of ever letting it stop him. Roy hadn’t done the things he had, come this far, to back out now or ever. No Alpha would cow him, no amount of gossip or derisive opinion would sway him. If a megalomaniacal pseudo God and his menagerie of unnatural ‘offspring’ hadn’t been enough to deter him, then nothing would. Roy Mustang would bow out only when he himself was ready to; when he’d deemed his goals accomplished sufficiently. Only then would he step back and let everything else fall where it may. And, so close to the top seat, the last thing he needed was a distraction. It was decidedly unfortunate that he neglected to take into account nature’s tendency to overrule the paltry decisions of man, and throw troublesome Elric’s at him. Alternatively: Roy gets blindsided by his biology, and Ed really isn’t helping.

He was setting the table for his guests: ‘and what guests!’ he thought ironically. Ten years have passed since the Promised Day, and many things have changed. Finally, the friends have time to reunite in Resembool and old stories are dug up, secrets are disclosed and hilarity ensues.

It started on the third of October 1910 and everyone remembers it very well. She becomes close, and eventually trusts him enough to see the tattoos on her back. Apparently that was all Roy wanted, and soon after seeing her at her most vulnerable, disappears. She finds him a week later in a motel, poring over her most guarded secret and forgetting that Riza even existed. Heartbroken, she decides to continue on her path, except now not content with just being Roy’s equal. She’ll surpass him now, she swears it. Summary: Edward enters the Far West, searching for new forms of alchemy. In the red dustbowl of the western lands, he meets with a man that many claims can perform miracles, but Edward’s past experiences with both Dr. Marcoh and Father Cornello told him he was going to find a Philosopher’s Stone behind these so-called “miracles”. During his meeting with Don Paco, Edward learns about magick: an ancient mystic art of Don Paco’s people. Edward takes a gamble when Don Paco offered him the possibility of restoring his Gate of Truth and thus restoring his ability to use alchemy. Little did he know that this “Miracle Man” had a hidden agenda, so on the morning after Don Paco performs the Ritual of Transcendence, the former State Alchemist finds himself trapped in the body of a cat. When all seemed lost, Edward finds an ally in Matilde, Don Paco’s wife. Thanks to Matilde, Edward learns that Don Paco had stolen his body and is heading to Resembool to find Winry. What he wants with the automail mechanic remains a mystery. Armed with the knowledge that the Ritual Transcendence can be reversed, Edward heads East to stop Don Paco and keep Winry from harm.

Summary: If there is one universal truth, it is that Edward Elric will do anything for his little brother…right? Yet Al is sick and Ed refuses to consider magic as a possible cause or cure. With the best intentions, Al goes behind Ed’s back to pursue the possibility, requesting assistance from Detective Roy Mustang—the only State recognized civilian Mage.  Roy reluctantly agrees, positive that doing so is about as smart as hugging a live grenade but curious because of, both the large disparity in mindsets of the brothers, and his rocky history with Ed. It predictably explodes in his face. Meanwhile, Roy has his hands full trying to protect those few magic users he’s able to track down within the confines of his profession from a world no one believes in (all the while assisting Al where he can and sidestepping explosive interactions with Ed).  He finds himself missing patterns, falling a step behind when he should be a step ahead and his past catches him unaware. Despite Ed’s protests that magic is just a flashy form of alchemy, it exists and it’s coming for him in a very real way. And when handed a decision, Ed makes the worst possible one. Fic #17: Bringing the Fight to You
Summary: Story so far:
Edward and Alphonse were born a few years earlier, so Edward is 21 at the beginning of this story. Edward never became a State Alchemist, instead, he and Alphonse train with Izumi Curtis and travel the world, learning as much as they can. Alphonse is now a doctor, and Edward has multiple PhDs in the fields of Alchemy and Languages, and is a professor at Central University. He also helps out at the hospital whenever he has spare time, using Alchehestry to increase people’s chances of survival until the doctors (and Alphonse) can get to them. They saved Maes Hughes, who set up Edward as Roy Mustang’s escort to a military ball.
Edward and Alphonse learn of the conspiracy involving the Promised Day.
This fic:
In order to prevent the scheme of the military high command to use all of Amestris to become immortal, Edward and Alphonse join forces with Mustang. They gather allies and prepare as best they can for the fight to come. Along the way, Roy and Ed have to hide their relationship, in order to tempt the senior staff into thinking they can gain Ed as an ally for their schemes. This doesn’t stop their romance from blooming, but many obstacles are put in their path. This is the story of how the Promised Day, and the year leading up to it, would have gone, had Edward stayed out of the military, and Hughes survived to tell the tale of a nationwide transmutation circle.

Can I please request some Modern AU with a spoonful of pining/adorkable Roy and tons of fluff? :D :D thank youuuu in advance, Emma!!
so i’ve fallen in love with this oneshot and writing their banter in a modern setting uwu thank you for this tas!!
also i hope the texting reads well in this format ksjdfjk i realise the format is 14:00pm which is a bit redundant but i didnt notice until reading it back on here aaaaand tbh i’ve waited too long to post this and its 10:30pm so i really can’t be bothered changing it at this point
part 2 | part 3
There was an incessant banging on his apartment door.Stumbling through his living room, Roy cursed as he kicked the corner of hiscouch hard, his toe throbbing. His irritation growing by the second, hisvisitor still banging away on thedoor like there was no tomorrow, he wrenched the door open with a glare. Riza, his neighbour, stood on the other side of the door, hand raised and poised toknock again with an impatient expression.
“What?” he growled irritably.
“Hey,” she greeted brightly, unconcerned about the time andthe sacred rite that was a lie in on a fucking Saturday. “Can I ask you a favour?”
“Riza, it’s Saturday morning.”
“And?” Damn her. Dam her and her ability to rise at six inthe morning any day of the week. The woman had probably never slept past sevenbefore in her life. Roy, on the other hand, appreciated and valued his sleep.
“Saturday,” hestressed slowly. He had finished work late last night and had been lookingforward to his sleep. Now it had been ruined by Riza.
They were good friends and hung out frequently. Starting offas neighbours who politely greeted each other every morning, they quicklydiscovered they shared mutual friends, so it was easy for their relationship todevelop. To Roy it had been the most natural thing. The only down side was saidfriends were both couples and they ended up third wheeling any outing theyattended. Through this, however, they had formed a close friendship, which hedeeply valued.
But when she interrupted his morning by loudly banging on his front door for about five minutes instead ofwaiting for a more respectable hour, Riza really tried his patience.
“Good observation,” she quipped. “Anyway, I need a favour,if you’re up for it?”
Roy sighed, admitting defeat. He rubbed his eyes tiredly, resigned to the fact that for the fourteenth day in a row, he had been woken upat six thirty in the morning.
“What?” he asked irritably.
“I’ve got a work thing tonight and I need you to come withme.” Roy narrowed his eyes critically, eyeing her open and honest expression.
“What’s this really about?”
With a sigh, she finally revealed the truth. “You know thatguy I was dating?”
“The stick?”
Riza huffed. “He’s not a stick.”
“Riza, he’s built like a stick.”
“Anyway, it didn’twork out and now I have… a situation.”
It shouldn’t have excited him so much to hear that herrelationship with Stick Man Dan didn’t work out. Roy wasn’t blind, Riza was abeautiful woman. Plus, he adored her as a friend. They had clicked instantlyand the banter they shared was effortless. If things were to progress furtherbetween them, Roy certainly wouldn’t say no.
“A situation?” Roy asked doubtfully, yawning loudly. “Whatkind of situation?”
“Just some friendly stalking, that’s all.”
That woke him up.“He’s stalking you?”
Riza nodded and Roy didn’t miss the briefest flash of worryappear on her face. “Have you gone to the police?”
Riza nodded. “Yeah, of course, but they won’t do anything.”
“Why?” he asked, unable to keep the anger out of his voice.Regardless of his feelings towards Riza, they should be doing something aboutit.
“Apparently until he does something concrete, and there’sevidence, they can’t charge him.”
“Bullshit.”
Riza’s lips quirked upwards. “I’m inclined to agree. Anyway,it’s fine. I can look after myself. My hope was that you could accompany me tothis thing tonight to try and gently tell him that, you know, I’ve moved on.”
“Yeah, of course,” he replied, tone concerned. “Do you needsomewhere to stay? Is it that serious?”
Riza smiled at him instead of replying, Roy unable todetermine the emotion on her face. “No, thank you. I’m okay.”
“Let me know if you do. And if Stick Man Dan comes around, give me a text or a knock.”
“I will,” she smiled that cryptic smile, expression soft.“Thank you.”
“Okay then. What time do I need to be ready for?”
“Six, if that’s okay?”
“No problem.”
“It’s date,” she grinned.
“But be warned,” Roy added. Riza’s expression turnedexpectant. “Wake me up, banging on my door, at this time tomorrow and I will remove your hands from the ends ofyour arms.”
Riza grinned. “Thanks Roy!” She walked towards the lift, aspring in her step, completely unconcerned about his empty-but-tempting threat. He sighed, closing his door, but smiled as he re-entered his apartment. Anevening with Riza on a “date” didn’t seem so bad.

“I’m going to kill you,” Roy grinned, trying to hide hisirritation as they walked arm in arm towards the function room where this partywas being held. “Really, Riza. This time, I will.”
“I’d like to see you try,” she muttered under her breathquickly before greeting a colleague and introducing Roy.
“You told Catalinaof all people.” Riza snickered beside him, steering Roy towards the buffettable. “You lied to her as well.”
“You neither confirmed, nor denied, if it was true.”
“I said I wouldn’t dignify it with an answer,” he bit back, his irritation rising. He couldn’t believeRiza had said to Catalina that he’d never been on a date before. Of course, he had been on a date before. The woman had phoned him up, cackling, asking if it was true. No matter what hesaid, Rebecca refused to accept any other answer.
God, he hated those two when they were together. A force tobe reckoned with, for sure, and often at his expense. Although they were maddening,Roy never minded it really. It was all good fun. However, it was just asentertaining to banter back and forth with Riza about the situation.
“Well, now we know you have,” she deadpanned, picking up apaper plate and filling it with food.
Roy followed suit, a smirk on his face as he shook his headin amusement. “I don’t feel so bad about making fun of you about Stick Man Dananymore. In fact, I don’t feel bad at all.”
“I would care butthat’s history.”
“Doesn’t look like it,” he muttered in her ear, picking outthe Stick Man himself heading their way, his approach unknown to Riza. Roy shothim a polite smile, which was ignored.
“What?” she asked, mid turn.
“Hey, Riza,” Stick Man Dan greeted his ex, still completelyignoring Roy. Thanks, mate.
Roy had never liked him. He was built like a stick, all skinand bones, and taller than anyone Roy had ever met, which did nothing in hisfavour in the appearance department. Every time they met up as a group, hewould completely gloss over everyone who wasn’t Riza, offering only one-wordanswers. Not to mention he hated Roy for some unknown reason. He couldn’tfigure out what it was. Roy would chuckle to himself when he considered StickMan Dan may have felt threatened by him.
Roy had often wondered what Riza saw in him. “As a concernedfriend,” he would tell Hughes and Catalina irritably when they gave each otherThe Look. Said look was a “oh-shit-he-loves-her” look.
Amusement aside, Roy did consider how it looked from anoutsider’s perspective. Both he and Riza were very close. Probably too close inthe opinion of significant others, but nothing had ever happened. It didn’tmean Roy didn’t want it too, but ifRiza wasn’t interested, then so be it. He wasn’t about to mess up thisfriendship and make it awkward by asking her.
As Stick Man Dan ignored Roy, he considered that perhapsthey were close enough that it wouldn’t makeit awkward between them. They told each other everything.
Only one way to find out, however now was not the time.
“So, you’re here with Gerald?” Riza asked him politelygripping Roy’s arm tighter and sliding an arm around his waist. Not expectingsuch close contact, his breath hitched as he ate, but was luckily able to hideit behind that.
“Gerald, unfortunately, was unable to make it tonight, however I thought I would just come anyway to honour Janine.”
Roy frowned. What person comes to a friend’s retirementparty? At said friend’s place of work?
A stalker, looking tosee someone who shot them down.
Roy shifted, wrapping his arm around Riza’s shoulder as hecontinued to eat, staring Stick Man Dan down. His hand came to rest on saidshoulder and he gave it a quick squeeze. Dan seemed to realise who it wasstanding beside Riza, and his eyes flicked to Roy’s briefly, before moving toRoy’s hand on Riza. If a six foot seven bean pole could look dangerous, thenthat’s what Stick Man Dan’s eyes looked like.
And Roy did notlike it.
Apparently, neither did Riza. She was tense underneath his arm,so he rubbed his shoulder in response. This man made her uncomfortable now, that was for sure. That was his job tonight, as a friend, to help her make itthrough this night and get rid of this guy forever. The only way Stick Man Danwould ever take the hint was if they were convincing.
However, he didn’t want to push the boundaries too much –
Oh my god, Roy, chill. You’re here as a friend, that’s it. Nothing more. Just help her out.
“That’s very nice of you,” Riza replied.
Stick Man Dan’s eyes flicked over to Roy’s once more. Oh, so he wasn’t invisible? Who knew? “Iwas wondering if I could talk to you for a minute?”
“Sorry, Janine asked us to come and speak to her after we’vegrabbed a plate,” Riza lied smoothly. Roy watched as the disappointment crossedStick Man Dan’s face, feeling very pleased by the show. Riza begun to walk away, neglecting to offer Dan another chance for his talk, and Roy let his arm drop, regrettably, but followed after her.
“Can you see me?” Roy whispered to her quietly, leaning inclose, as they left Stick Man Dan at the buffet table alone.
“What?” Riza asked, looking up at him, confused.
“Can you see me?” he repeated. “Stick Man Dan acted as if Iwasn’t there and I was wondering if I’ve miraculously achieved the ability toturn invisible.” Riza snorted, loudly. “I mean, it would come in incrediblyuseful. I’ll be disappointed if you cansee me at this point.”
“Shut up,” she laughed quietly, approaching the woman of thehour. “He’s an ass.”
“I honestly don’t know what you saw in him,” Roy joked, sighing dramatically. He would never let on that he was being serious. “I mean, clearly he was a charmer.”
“He never liked you, did he?” Riza smirked, popping asandwich in to her mouth.
“Oh, we were best buds. Me and Dan?” He rose his hand, crossing over his pointer and middle finger. “We were tight, just like that.”
“Shut up,” she chuckled.
The rest of the evening was pleasant. Riza’s colleagues weregood people who welcomed him with open arms. Apparently, they were in on thewhole stalker situation, and were aware of Roy’s role in the night. It didn’tstop them from playing it up, perhaps too much. As much as Roy enjoyedpretending that he and Riza were a couple, that was just it.
Pretend.
“Do you want to go with them?” Riza whispered in his ear.The feeling of her hot breath on his ear made him shiver, goose bumps rising onhis flesh. There were a few people who were going out for the night to a clubnearby. Truthfully, Roy didn’t want the evening to end. He enjoyed having hisarm around Riza as they sat together, their thighs pressed against each other.Holding her hand was something he couldn’t get enough of, and often foundhimself stroking the back of it with his thumb as they sat.
It’s all an act,he kept reminding himself.
But as the night wore on, Roy found he didn’t want it to bejust an act.
So, he agreed to going out to the club.
That was his first mistake.
His second came when they were dancing under the dimlighting, smoke coiling around their legs as they moved dangerously close to one another. Roy saw, rather than felt, hishand reaching out to brush her bangs off her face, his hand curving around hercheek to cup it. Riza’s eyes that had once been on the space between them hadsnapped up to meet his, both their dancing slowly coming to a stop. A thumbbrushed over her cheekbone and Riza’s eyes widened. The music in the clubdulled to a heavy thump, the wordsfading away to become obsolete.
He pressed his lips gently against Riza’s, feeling herbreathing hitch underneath them. His free hand made its way to her waist, handgliding effortlessly across the material of her silk top as it moved around toher lower back. Riza responded eagerly, deepening the kiss after she locked herarms around his neck, pulling him tightly against her body.
For a few moments all was right in the world. This felt good. It felt natural. It made Roywonder why they hadn’t done it sooner. He pulled back, as if his brain finallyrealised what he had done, and who hehad kissed.
Riza was a friend. This was supposed to be pretend. Not thatRiza could hear him, but he stuttered, trying to apologise for oversteppingthat final boundary.
The look in her eyes told Roy she was okay with it.
One of her own hands rose to cup his cheek this time, drawing his lips back against hers.
*          *          *
“Would… Would you like to come in for a coffee?”
Riza smiled tiredly. She had ridden in the lift with her headon his shoulder, eyes closed, and a small smile on her face. It had made Roy’sstomach go crazy and grip her hand tighter as they stood waiting on theirfloor.
That second mistake was working out all right.
“I would love to, but I think I’m just going to go tosleep.”
“See, if you slept in at the weekend, you wouldn’t be sotired at one am.”
Riza smirked but the lift dinged at their floor before she would reply.
“Maybe one day, you could teach me,” she replied, playingcoy, before giving him a wink as she stepped out of the lift. That left Roystaring after her, desire in his eyes.
A hand stilled the one on her door handle, gently but firmlyspinning Riza around so her back was against her apartment door. Roy’s handswere pressed flat against Riza’s apartment door, trapping her head betweenthem. Her surprised squeak was adorable and so was the grin on her face as Roybent to kiss her lips. Since he had done it for the first time in the club, he hadached to do it again.
“See you tomorrow?” Roy murmured, his hands moving slowly upand down her waist.
“See you tomorrow,” she agreed, her face and neck flushedfrom their activities. “You can count on it.”
He bid her goodnight and entered his own empty apartment. Thememory of kissing Riza, the feelings of her skin underneath his hands on herwaist, the softness of her hair as he ran his hands through it feverishly were freshin his mind as they lulled him peacefully to sleep.
Only to be interrupted by incessant knocking on hisapartment door.
At six thirty in the morning.
There is only one person…
Gearing up for his charade of being truly irritated, butready to joke with his friend, his retort about removing her hands from theends of her arms died on his tongue. One look at Riza’s face told him this visitwas different. She looked… scared?
“Can… Can I stay here?” Her voice was hesitant and quiet, almost fearful. His irritation gone after hearing her speak, Roy opened thedoor wider so she would enter his apartment. He was worried. Riza never looked like this.
“Yeah, of course. Is everything okay?”
Riza shook her head, offering him her phone instead ofreplying. Apprehensively, Roy took the phone from her unresisting hands.
Unknown Number: Riza weneed to talk. I didn’t like what I saw tonight. I don’t like you spending timewith that guy. I won’t allow it. 06:21am
Roy looked up at her from the screen. Her eyes were castdown towards the floor, not looking at him in the eye.
“I got that this morning, a few minutes after I woke up.”
He tried to reign in his anger. He really did. Was he watching her? The thought made himphysically ill and see red at the same time. “This happen often?” he askedcurtly, but somehow, he already knew her answer.
“Yes,” she replied in a small voice.
“Has it ever escalated?” Riza was silent and that was theonly answer Roy needed. “Why didn’t you tellme?”
“I could handle it,” she replied, voice stronger now. “Buteven after last night he still hasn’t gotten the hint and…”
“What?”
“I’m scared,” she whispered. “I’m scared of what he might do,of what he’s possibly already done, and I… I don’t want to be alone right now.Especially not in my apartment.”
Roy closed the door behind her, putting the chain across it,as if a reassurance that Dan wouldn’t get anywhere near her. Not while Roy wasaround anyway.
“Block that number after you’ve reported him to the police,”Roy told her. “I’ll drive you down there tomo – Well, at a more respectablehour,” he quipped.
“Why don’t we just go now?” Riza asked, confused. Ah, of course, Misswhat-is-sleeping-past-six-am?
“I’m going back to bed,” Roy told her. “And – only if youwant to – you can learn the benefits of sleeping past six am at the weekend.”
His attempt at humour was only to try and lighten the mood –to try and take Riza’s mind off things – and he was pleased to see she fellinto step with him, their banter coming easily to each other. He was thrilledto learn thigs weren’t different between them, despite what happened tonight.
Riza’s lips quirked up and her posture relaxed. Instead ofher arms hugging her body, they moved into the front pocket of her hoodie. “Andwhat benefits would those be?”
“Waking up next to me?” he offered with a smirk.
Riza sighed, cocking her head as if to consider hisproposal. “I think I like that benefit. Are there anymore?”
Roy grinned widely as he closed the distance between them, kissing Riza Hawkeye like his life depended on it.
God, it felt good.

In "Trump Town," the Revolving Door Runneth Over: Yet More Ex-Lobbyists as Political Appointees at the Department of Health and Human Services
We have accumulated a remarkable number of stories of people transiting the revolving door from high-level positions in health care corporations to high-level positions in health care policy or regulation for the Trump administration.  These stories may not always appear in the most prominent places, but their accumulation suggests they should be of prominent importance.
ProPublica's "Trump Town" Project ProPublica has just made public its massive "Trump Town" project.  An accompanying article explains it thus,
When the Trump administration took office early last year, hundreds of staffers from lobbying firms, conservative think tanks and Trump campaign groups began pouring into the very agencies they once lobbied or whose work they once opposed. Today we’re making available, for the first time, an authoritative searchable database of 2,475 political appointees, including Trump’s Cabinet, staffers in the White House and senior officials within the government, along with their federal lobbying and financial records. Trump Town is the result of a year spent filing hundreds of Freedom of Information Act requests; collecting and organizing staffing lists; and compiling, sifting through and publishing thousands of financial disclosure reports. Here’s what we found: At least 187 Trump political appointees have been federal lobbyists, and despite President Trump’s campaign pledge to 'drain the swamp,' many are now overseeing the industries they once lobbied on behalf of. We’ve also discovered ethics waivers that allow Trump staffers to work on subjects in which they have financial conflicts of interest.
In other words, 'Trump Town' offers a detailed view of the most massive and far-reaching campaign to instill conflicted corporate insiders into federal agencies ever attempted.  For years, we at Health Care Renewal have been trying to highlight particular instances of people who transit the revolving door to or from US government agencies involved with health care.  We stepped up this effort when we realized that the Trump administration seemed intent on moving a record number of people from the health care "industry" to positions within the government which could regulate or influence policy affecting that industry.  But ProPublica has shown there were far more such people than we dreamed of. The Latest Crop of Revolving Door Travelers Publicly Revealed So here we will review people listed in the ProPublica database who went from lobbying for the health care "industry" to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) under the Trump administration.  We will emphasize those whom we have not yet previously discussed.  In alphabetical order: John J. Legal services The Timberland Company Legal services Union Pacific Railroad Company Legal services Discussion On and on it goes.  The revolving door has been a chronic problem for the US federal government, but the level of revolving door activity in the current regime seems way beyond anything we have seen before.  It seems we chronical multiple instances of people going from important health care corporate positions to government positions that regulate or make policy affecting those same corporations for every instance of someone coming from the previous administrations to industry. So, as I have said before, e.g.,  in August, 2017, The revolving door is a species of conflict of interest. Worse, some experts have suggested that the revolving door is in fact corruption.  As we noted here, the experts from the distinguished European anti-corruption group U4 wrote,
The literature makes clear that the revolving door process is a source of valuable political connections for private firms. But it generates corruption risks and has strong distortionary effects on the economy, especially when this power is concentrated within a few firms.
The ongoing parade of people transiting the revolving door from industry to the Trump administration once again suggests how the revolving door may enable certain of those with private vested interests to have excess influence, way beyond that of ordinary citizens, on how the government works, and that the country is still increasingly being run by a cozy group of insiders with ties to both government and industry. This has been termed crony capitalism. The latest cohort of revolving door transits suggests that regulatory capture is likely to become much worse in the near future. Remember to ask: cui bono? Who benefits? The net results are that big health care corporations increasingly control the governmental regulatory and policy apparatus.  This will doubtless first benefit the top leadership and owners/ stockholders (when applicable) of these organizations, who are sometimes the same people, due to detriment of patients' and the public's health, the pocketbooks of tax-payers, and the values and ideals of health care professionals.   So, as we have said before [before, before...] The continuing egregiousness of the revolving door in health care shows how health care leadership can play mutually beneficial games, regardless of the their effects on patients' and the public's health.  Once again, true health care reform would cut the ties between government and corporate leaders and their cronies that have lead to government of, for and by corporate executives rather than the people at large. Omg fluff #14!!! Aaaaaa ty ❤
this ended up running out of control but i couldn’t be happier with the results these two are such dORKS in this au and i won’t apologise for it uwu
part 1 |  part 2 | part 3
“Am Iyour lock screen?” “You weren’t supposed to see that.”
“Roycould you get that?” Riza called from the bathroom. There was no answer.Huffing in frustration she quickly rinsed the shampoo from her hair. This callwas important, one she had been waiting on all morning and afternoon. Theminute she had stepped in the shower, her phone rang. Typical.
“Roy!”
He better not be asleep, Riza thought to herself. He had aknack of falling asleep any time, any place, and she had just left him fiveminutes ago to go shower to prepare for her night out with Rebecca Catalina.Ringing her hair out hurriedly, she called his name again, desperate for ananswer. She contemplated grabbing a towel to answer it herself.
Roystarted on the couch, his body jerking at the rude awakening. Towards the endof his dream there had been an incessant ringing and buzzing in his ear, tryingto disturb his peace.
“Roy!” Riza tried one last time, lettingher irritation show.
“What?”he yelled back, irritated. His eyes closed of their own accord, fighting thesleep which had a tight hold on him.
“Thephone!”
“Whatabout it?” he groaned, cracking an eye open to glare at the offending piece oftechnology. It was so loud. It wasunnecessary.
“ForGod’s sake, answer it!”
Roysighed and blindly felt for her phone and slid to answer, not even bothering tolook at who was calling. Riza had mentioned something about an important callbut for the life of him he couldn’t remember who it was that would be callingher.
“Hello?”he asked, voice thick with sleep, trying not to sound too rude towards theperson who had disrupted his slumber.
Beforehe heard the other person’s answer, the phone was plucked from his grasp. Waterdripped on his hand and down his arm. Confused, Roy craned his neck to look upat Riza who was standing beside him in nothing but a towel.
Now he was awake.
Afterthe whole fiasco with Dickhead Dan, Riza had moved into his apartment fairlyquickly. It started off by her just stealing the odd hoodie. Then she claimedspace in the bathroom for her toothbrush with the excuse that the majority ofthe meals he cooked contained far too many onions and far too much garlic – heliked them both, so sue him. The rest was history and now it was two yearslater.
The besttwo years of Roy’s life, if he was being perfectly honest.
Sleepcontinued to hold its grip on him, and his eyes drifted closed as Rizacontinued to talk. He listened to the sound of it, letting her guide him backto unconsciousness. He found comfort in everything she did and listening to hervoice was no different. Within a few seconds he felt himself losing his grip onreality once more.
Thephone hit him square on the chest. Roy grunted in pain, eyes blearily makingtheir way open once more.
“Letme rest, woman,” he grumbled.
“Thanksfor answering the phone for me like I asked,” she bit back, but there wasamusement in her tone. She had re-entered the living room, clothed and towellingher hair dry. Roy yawned loudly, stretching on the couch after sitting up. Coolair brushed over his now exposed abdomen and he shivered.
“Listen…”He found he had no answer to give her. It was Saturday afternoon, so it wasn’tlike he’d had a tiring day at work. Perhaps it was their night time activities makinghim more lethargic during the day, but there was no way in hell he was going toput a stop to that.
“Yes?”she asked sweetly, sitting next to him. She pecked his cheek with a grin, herdemeanour changing since she answered the phone. Perhaps she had noticed justhow tired he was. Not that he was trying – or able – to hide it.
“Whywas it so important?” he asked, changing the course of the conversation. “Iknow I asked already,” he added quickly to dispel any comment about hisinability to pay attention. He would have been able to concentrate if Rizahadn’t woken him up at six – still, she was unable to sleep past six in themorning – with a temptation whispered in his ear that was so great, Roy wasawake within a second.
Riza’sface softened. “It was my grandfather. He’s in town tomorrow and asked if wecould possible meet up for lunch. I haven’t seen him in over twenty years so…This is going to be special. I didn’t want to miss his call because I have noway of returning it.”
“Surelyyou could call him back?”
Sheshook her head. “He works very high up in the government and was calling fromwork. There’s no way to take an incoming call in his office.”
“NowI see why you wanted me to answer it,” he stated the obvious.
Onecorner of Riza’s mouth quirked upwards. “I just…” She clasped her handstogether, crossing her legs as she stared down at them. She was fully facingRoy now, her wet hair swept over one shoulder. “It’s been so long and he’s theonly family I have left. I didn’t want to mess it up.”
Roygrasped her hand, giving it a squeeze. “You won’t,” he reassured her, stiflinganother yawn.
“Howare you so tired today?” she asked suddenly, still amused.
“Someone woke me up too early thismorning.” He shot her a pointed look.
Rizalooked unashamed. “I didn’t hear you complaining. In fact, you did theopposite,” she grinned.
“Veryfunny,” he replied sarcastically, narrowing his eyes at her when she stuck hertongue out at him.
“Isit so wrong to rest my eyes for two seconds?” he asked, leaning back andclosing them once more. He crossed his ankles, stretching his legs out as hesat on the couch, clasping his hands on his stomach.
“Twoseconds?” he heard her reply. “No. An hour and a half? On a Saturday afternoon? When we’re both off work?” She was still grinning so he couldn’t be in too muchtrouble. “Yes.”
Hecracked one eye open. “I –” He had no further answer to give because yes, thatsounded like him. Riza laughed at his expression and Roy couldn’t stop himselffrom grinning at the sound.
“Anyway,I’m going to get ready, then you can sleep in peace. Rebecca will kill me ifI’m late.”
“RizaHawkeye? Late for anything in her life ever? You’re having a laugh.”
“Well, actually…” Roy cracked an eye open again, noticing the change in her tone. Ithad become more subdued, bordering on worried. He turned his head, opening botheyes, taking in her slightly fearful expression. She offered no furtherexplanation, instead her eyes flitted left and right before dropping to thefloor, her shoulders hunching slightly.
“Riza?”he asked, concerned, sitting up. “What is it? What’s wrong?” He hadn’t seen herlike this since…
Well, since the night he had punched Dickhead Dan in the face.
“I… Iam… late.”
“Forwhat?” Roy asked after a pause, his brain not slotting the pieces into place. When her head lifted and he saw her face, it still didn’t click.
“You know,”she urged, shifting her weight from foot to foot. “I’m late.”
Suddenly, everything became crystal clear. His stomach didn’t just drop, it torpedoed allthe way into the centre of the earth, leaving him gaping at his girlfriend inhis living room without it.
Hestuttered, his brain trying to formulate anythingto say to her.
Late…Late. As in… Pregna…
“Roy,I’m kidding.”
AsRiza broke out into barking laughter he threw the couch pillow at her as hardas he could. “Not funny!” he yelled to her retreating form. She was stillcackling away as he heard the bathroom door close.
“Maybenot to you,” she giggled.
Grumbling,he lay back on the cushions, trying to calm his racing heart.
“Pregnant,”he muttered under his breath, stifling the feeling of fear that came with thatword. Of course, that was ultimately the end game, however he was much tooyoung and unprepared to deal with something like a child right now. Most wouldargue he was a child himself, and that it was a good thing Riza had come alongwhen she did “to take care of him”. Of course, Catalina had laughed heartily atthat.
Speakingof, Riza’s phone – which had slid off his chest when Roy sat up – was face upand the screen lit up with a notification of a text from Catalina. What reallydrew his attention was the photo on the lock screen. All thought of herprevious cruel joke was cast aside, and his face softened.
Itwas taken by Riza when they were on holiday in Aerugo. He was on the beach, thesea in front of him as he looked to the left, sunglasses on his face. He hadn’tbeen too far away when she took it, but far enough so his whole body and backfit the length of her screen.
Hehad been pulling dumb poses simply because it had made Riza laugh while shesnapped away. This one, however, had been a quiet moment after all thehilarity. He’d thought Riza was dozing on the sun lounger and had just spent aquiet moment admiring the sea before him, the sun turning the surface todiamonds. He distinctly remembered thinking how lucky he was to be in thissituation with the woman he loved. Come to think of it, he had stood andreturned to the sun loungers to find a sleeping Riza.
Hadshe been faking it? he wondered, scandalised.
Vainly,he thought just how good his shirtless back looked, however what reallydominated his thoughts was the fact that Riza had chosen that photo inparticular to set as her lock screen. He chuckled. Someone liked what they saw,and that worked wonders for his ego.
“Am Iyour lock screen?” he asked when she entered the room again, holding up thephone and feeling too pleased with himself when her cheeks turned bright red.It was adorable but at the same time karma was a bitch and it was her turn tobe the butt of a joke.
“Youweren’t supposed to see that,” she muttered, trying to snatch the phone out ofhis hands. Roy, of course, leapt up from the couch and held it above his head. They were the same height so he didn’t doubt she would be able to reach it. Themethod she would use to attempt to retrieve her phone, Roy was unsure. It begunto buzz in his hand, the screen lighting up with an incoming call and a pictureof Catalina. “Give it back,” she demanded.
“Ah,ah,” he tutted, holding it even further away from her grabbing hands. “Why thisone in particular?” he teased as he grinned. “And how long has it been thatone? I thought it was that photo of us both in Creta.”
“It is,” she stressed, still trying in vainto retrieve her phone and end the embarrassment. Roy wouldn’t let that happen, however. He was having too much fun.
“Thisone isn’t from Creta.”
“Thank you Captain Obvious. It’s aslideshow,” she elaborated, sighing exasperatedly and rolling her eyes. “I justnever expected you to see that one in particular.”
“Likewhat you see that much?” he asked, waggling his eyebrows. Riza huffed inresponse, her cheeks turning a shade of pink. Roy just laughed at her expense. That, however, only made her more irritated. It couldn’t have been that badthough, because Roy could see the smile threatening to break through on herface. “Karma is a bitch, Riza Hawkeye, and it’s time you learned that.”
“Roy,”she scolded, trying again to reach for her phone, but her amusement leakedthrough. “Give me it. You know how she gets when you don’t answer her calls.”
“Exactly,”he grinned. “And I don’t have to deal with it all night, but you do.”
Itwas an unexpected course of action Riza used, but one Roy appreciated for itscreativity. She stepped onto his couch and leapt onto his back, clinging to itlike a monkey. Roy half laughed, half grunted, disbelief taking over so shecould effortlessly pluck the phone from his flailing hand and slid to answer, not moving from the spot on his back.
“Hey,Rebecca,” she greeted warmly, unconcerned she was still hanging onto him. Royhad been bent over at the waist by her weight and was now standing, back flat, and arms outstretched to keep Riza balanced on his back so she didn’t fall.Riza remained in place, apparently very comfortable, just chilling out on hisback.
“Riza,”he said pointedly, indicating she should get off.
Sheignored him.
“Oh,nothing. He’s just pouting because I won something.”
“That makes a change,” Roy heard hersarcastic reply. Instead of pouting, his brow furrowed.
“Youdidn’t win,” he grumbled quietly, still talking towards the floor. He tried to straighten but Riza dug herfingers into his ribs. Roy jerked and laughed loudly, protesting. He shuffledbackwards, trying to escape her fingers as they continued to dig into his ribs, but it was to no avail. It was an effort to keep her from falling off. Hegripped the back’s of her thighs, stopping her from crashing into the coffee tableand banging her head.
“What’s going on over there?” Catalinaasked.
“Justice,”Riza replied simply. Roy could hearthe wicked grin in her voice. Sure enough, he craned his neck around and saw iton her face.
“You’remean,” he pouted, sticking his bottom lip out.
“Shouldn’thave tried to steal my phone,” she shrugged.
“Do I need to call back at a later time or?Do you guys need a room for a few minutes?”
Rizasnickered. “No, we don’t. I think I’ve put Roy off that for a few weeks,” shegiggled.
Hehuffed and used all his strength to stand up straight, his back protestingpainfully as Riza wrapped one arm across his chest and her legs wrapped aroundhis waist, cementing her place against him like a spider monkey. In any othercircumstance Roy would be thoroughly enjoying this, but it was true, Riza had put him off any kind of activity inthe bedroom after her joke –
Oh,who was he kidding, he was absolutely enjoying the feeling of Riza’s bodypressed against his back as she continued to talk to Catalina as if nothing wasamiss.
Roygrunted as he shifted, trying to ease the pain in his legs. His thighs werebeginning to burn. Instead of climbing down likea normal person, Riza just shifted her grip as she continued to speak.
“Riza,” he tried again.
“Yeah,just a minute. I’m comfy.”
Shesnickered when she felt him freeze.
“That’sit,” he muttered, shrugging his shoulders to try and shift her grip. Of course,Riza just gripped tighter. Trying another tactic, he turned towards the couchand bent low and bucked, tickling her behind the knees to loosen her grip onhim. He tried to flip her over his head, and it worked. She shrieked, piercinghis eardrum with the volume. It’s a wonder Roy didn’t hear Catalina protestthrough the earpiece.
Roystraightened, staring down at a dishevelled Riza on his couch, staring back upat him as she laughed and felt something different from pride at his expertlyhatched plan stir inside him.
“It’sa wonder Catalina didn’t comment on that.”
“Shehung up ages ago.”
“What?”he asked in disbelief, breathing hard after his escape attempt, hands movingfrom his hips to falling loose by his sides.
“Yeah,I just wanted to see what you would do,” Riza replied, her own chest rising andfalling as she breathed hard. There was a glint in her eye, showing her mischievousstreak.
Roy’sown eyes flashed. He gripped her hand tightly, pulling her up rapidly so shestumbled, bumping into his chest as the air around them shifted. He smirked. Hecouldn’t imagine his life without her now, especially with all the shenanigansand laughter Riza brought with her. Even from day one, before they weretogether, they had always joked around like this. Being the third wheels, theyhad to find some way to entertain themselves and that mostly involved dumb shitthat left them in fits of giggles.
Helifted her up by the waist so thistime she had her legs wrapped around his waist from the front. Roy begun thewalk towards their bedroom as he eyed her hungrily with desire.
“Wait,”Riza laughed. “Rebecca will be here in half an hour.”
Royglanced at the clock then shrugged. “We’ve got time.”
Thebedroom door banged loudly behind them as Riza laughed. However, it was sooncut off when Roy pressed his lips against her, turning her laughter into moans.
