Puck Off! Chapter 5

Eomer and Lothíriel meet up to uphold their side of the bet. The heat is turned up between the Knights and Riders, but also between our two hockey fanatics.

In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.

I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!

From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!

I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.

The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.

(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)

If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.

The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.

insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box

add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box

delete -> self explanatory

on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic

The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.

Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

Rohirric Insults!

I was really intrigued by @hastyhobbit ‘s Rohan Secret Santa prompt on Rohirric profanity, so I wanted to try my hand at a few even though that wasn’t the prompt I wrote a full fic(let) for. Bad language alert below! (Though as a modern person, I tried to avoid profanity’s worst tendencies toward body shaming, misogyny, etc.)

I’m sure the Rohirrim have all the usual swear words/phrases that would correspond roughly to those that we use most often, but here are a few insults that might be more specific to Rohan and that would get a small chorus of “oooooohhhh”s from Rohirrim school kids:

— Cweadtegel: “Shit tail.” Sometimes your horse doesn’t get its tail out of the way in time, and then you’ve got a gross, smelly problem right behind you all day. So a cweadtegel is a shitty person who you are unlucky to have around and just wish they’d go away.

— Byrðrehelm: It translates literally as “mom helmet” and is a taunt that means roughly “you’re someone whose mommy probably puts his helmet on for him.”

— Stryndsaed: In politest terms, it means “wasted seed” (though you can perhaps imagine a less delicate alternative to “seed”) and suggests that someone has been utterly worthless since the moment they were conceived.

— Grefdrest: Literally “grave dregs.” The Rohirrim believe that after you die, your soul is escorted from your grave either to the halls of your fathers or to spend some time in service to the gods to earn the honor of joining your ancestors. But a grefdrest is someone so unpleasant that their spirit will be left behind to wallow alone in their grave because no one in the afterlife wants to spend any time with them.

— Esolrida: “Donkey rider.” Obviously, this is the absolute worst thing you could say about someone by insulting their horse and their pride as a rider all in one. Calling someone an esolrida would absolutely get you stabbed in some of the rougher taverns and bars.

— Slawhnocc: “Lazy cock.” Started out as something women whispered between each other about men who weren’t pulling their weight in bed but came to be applied more generally over time. So someone who has a slawhnocc is someone who can’t be bothered to put effort into anything, no matter how important or enjoyable.
