I'm pretty critical of Buffy's final season (because ... well, I've watched it), but there are some things I think it does well and, since I'm trying to talk myself into working on my S7 AU fic again, I thought it might be worth trying to write down what they are.
I like the sense of completeness there is in going back to some of the show's beginnings. I like seeing Buffy in school again, but this time as an adult with a job. It doesn't just let us re-examine the high school years from a new perspective, it gives Buffy's arc over the last few seasons a nice sense of direction. I like what little we see of Dawn in high school. (I wish there were more episodes like Help.) In principle, I even like the fact that this season's Big Bad is a supernatural threat we've seen on the show before.
While I think there are a lot of problems with the execution (and even with the wider concept) of making the First Evil the primary (frequently the only) antagonist, the First being around does give you a lot of possibilities for having characters literally come face to face with their pasts. I like the final scene of Lessons and I like Conversations With Dead People and I like seeing the Mayor on screen again. I wish the show had done more with this concept.
I like meeting new (Potential) Slayers and finding out more about past Slayers. I like Robin Wood. I like Kennedy. (I wish the show did a better job making the audience care about any of the other Potentials.) I like that Faith comes back. I like that there is a focus on what it means to be a Slayer this season (compare how the show opens, with Buffy taking Dawn on patrol and telling her "it's about power..." [which Dawn doesn't have], to the scene in Chosen where Buffy asks the Potentials "what if you could have that power?").
I also (sorry) really like the fact that the writers resisted the urge to make Dawn a Potential or have her suddenly develop any magical powers as a result of being the Key (which there are at least rumours they were talking about doing). I like that the show stuck with the idea that Dawn is the part of Buffy who gets to be an ordinary girl.
For all its flaws (silly CGI battle against monsters I don't care about which is resolved by a random mcguffin from a different show; weird retcon about Sunnydale apparently being inland; a bunch of other unfortunate writing choices I won't get into here) I really do like Chosen a lot. It feels very fitting that the show ends with Buffy both finally getting to leave Sunnydale and with her no longer having to shoulde the burden of being "the" Slayer (or one of only two Slayers, anyway) anymore. I love how open-ended and hopeful that manages to be.
And speaking of Chosen, I like Buffy's "cookie dough" speech. I like the fact that the show lets Buffy end the series single, and recognizing that she doesn't have to be in a serious romantic relationship if she doesn't feel she's ready for one right now. (I like post-S7 Fuffy as a concept a lot, sure, but I think I prefer it as something that neither of them rushes into.)
I like that Amy comes back? I mean, I don't like anything the season does with her, but still: points for remembering she exists, I guess.
I like the fact that Willow gets to grieve Tara but also move on with her life and start dating again. [I don't know if I would have killed Tara off if I was writing S6 -- I think probably not -- but given that Tara did die I think this is the only good option.]
Empty Places is a good .... name for an episode?
For all my (many, many) issues with Andrew Wells this season (and in particular with just how much Andrew Wells is in this season, which is ... a lot), I think Storyteller is ... pretty good? I liked Jonathan, I think it's sad he dies (and his speech about missing high school now that he's left is another good moment from this season) but I wouldn't really have wanted to have him turn up and help save the day either. Having Andrew kill him (and then have to face up to the fact) feels like the right choice, to me, if you were going to bring either character back [I'm not really sure I would have done that though, to be honest].
Equally, for all my irritation at the time wasted on the "is Giles the First Evil?" subplot and at some of the other character deaths the writers did go for, I'm glad that the Core Four all survive. What the season actually does with Giles isn't very good, and neither Xander nor Willow are in this season enough (especially not in its second half), but at least they all get to live.
Oh, and Anya. I'm glad the writers didn't give in to the temptation to kill off Anya for some sort of cheap shock value, the way some leaked early drafts of Chosen suggest they were thinking of doing. Can you imagine how infuriating that would have been? I don't know if I would ever have accepted it. I might even now be living in denial. Thankfully common sense prevailed there and Anya definitely survived.

Childhood sweethearts - To me, this is Lietbel (my OTP). They also have a knight/lady or princess dynamic, but this even could apply to Lietpol too because... Feliks IS the pretty princess. 🤣
Arranged marriage - Lietpol because of the Union of Krewo and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. But I also can see this in Lietbel in historical Hetalia, as the Principality of Polotsk (considered the first proto-Belarusian state) joined with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to avoid invasions from both the Teutonic Knights and Mongol Empire. It could be a 3-way marriage union... or 4 if you count Ukraine? ��
22. Top favorite fanfictions?
Oh man, I have a lot! I'm going to list some old fanfics I faved on my old FFNet acc that I used to love in high school though, because I hardly read fanfics anymore.
Nineteen Ninety - VoicesoftheSoul - One of the first fics of my OTP Lietbel I've read.
Belaya Rus: On a Spring Day in 1487 - rev lady mal - Belarus history-centric. This fic first introduced me to learning about the history of Belarus and her long history with Lithuania in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. There are historical inaccuracies and she comes off as OOC, but I appreciate this fic as an attempt to show her history that is not known in the mainstream in Hetalia-style – and not portray her to be a hostile bitch or have a romantic or sexual obsession over Ivan.
Rings, Rejection, and an Unintentional Fiancé - Anonymous Dream Echo - One of my ultimate fave Lietbel fanfics! I still go back to re-read this here and there despite there being some cultural inaccuracies.
Plastic Talks - Mandelene - This fic kinda helped me cope with my teen angst and issues at the time. Still is a so well-written high school AU of Nyo!America.
Raven Tears - Dontmezwitme - Probably one of the most heartwrenching fics about loss and colonization of the Americas I've read. This focuses on the fanon personification of all American Indians/Indigenous Americans and First Nations raising her twin sons that later became known as the U.S. and Canada.
Childs Play - pupeez4eva - It sadly never finished but this was my favorite comedy fic of nations being turned back into their child selves.
A Colony, a Babysitter, and an Old Rivalry - TheFreakZone - A comedy fic on England planning a date with France but is looking for a babysitter for Gibraltar. Spain volunteers because he wants to claim him back. So many good witty liners!
30. BroTP? Headcanons?
When I was in high school, America/Canada was my BroTP (still love em tho!) but now as an adult, they are Poland/Belarus, Poland/Hungary (sometimes, I ship them romantically 😅), and Lithuania/Latvia!
Most of my headcanons for each here below will be referencing real-life history.
Poland/Balarus:
Natallia sees Feliks more as an actual brother than her "biological" brother Ivan, as they were around each other often for most of their later childhood and adolescent years during the Polish-Lithuania union and Commonwealth. The Belarusian language is greatly influenced by Polish. I know in canon their relationship comes off as more hostile, but I depict them in my head as having a bickering sibling-like relationship.
Because of their history, Natallia and Feliks can speak a vernacular language/dialect that may be a creole and strange mix of Polish and Belarusian: Tutejšy (or tutejszy). It was commonly spoken by peasants since it was simple speech. I read somewhere (can't remember where) that in Lithuania near the Lithuania-Belarus border, you can find some elderly Lithuanian Poles speaking it, except it may be blended with the Russian language too.
Feliks calls Natallia "Nastka," a Polish diminutive of her name. She calls him "Felek."
They both LOOVE gossiping and spilling to each other pop culture tea! I mean, Natallia knows so much countless trivia, even Paris Hilton's dog name, in canon so I can see her being a bit chronically online googling celeb tea.
Poland/Hungary:
They've been besties forever since early childhood, even married at least once before Poland married Lithuania.
Austria definitely has his moments of being jealous of their friendship.
Both are fluent in each others' languages and when they communicate, they speak in a creole language that baffles other countries because it sounds "so strange." Hungarian is not considered an Indo-European language.
Feliks calls Erzsébet "Ela" and "Ellcia," Polish diminutives of her name.
Lithuania/Latvia:
I generally consider them both to be "biological" brothers since they're both Baltic, with Lithuania being the older sibling. Although, sometimes I like toying with the idea they're cousins because Lithuania and Latvia do have diverging cultures/histories.
They love playing basketball together (although, Raivis' true favorite sport is hockey since it's Latvia's most popular sport). And they both act like loud frat boys when watching games, whether in person or on TV.
They both like to pull potato-themed pranks occasionally on Belarus and Ireland, some other countries with high potato consumption and have potato stereotypes.
Raivis has physically aged more since declaring independence in the 90s and his economy growing stronger, so he's now physically 17 – and has grown taller than Tolys!
Both are great singers and dancers, but Raivis is the "better" one.
Unlike Tolys, Raivis does not dislike Gilbert as much, at least not as much as he used to. But Raivis is willing to join in with Tolys in annoying him.

Sawyer Kiddo
🌸 What are some of their favorite things and why? List as many as you can think of!
Peanut butter pie with whipped cream. Sawyer associates it with childhood. Her dad (Pax) made one weekly to motivate her to do well in grade school. If she was good, she'd get a slice first thing when coming home.
Fries. This is Sawyer's go-to junk food snack, but she can get picky with where they come from. If they're well seasoned, she loves dipping them in ranch. Again, very fussy about the brand/flavor because of sensory issues related to taste.
Sawyer loves computers and got into programming and repairing them because of video games from the late 1980s and early 1990s. When she was young, she and her cousin Carmen frequented the local arcades in Raccoon City. If her life turned out differently, Sawyer would have gone to college for a degree in gaming graphics. She has a Gameboy and frequently plays it when not working for VITA.
Zorro. Sawyer watched re-runs of the old series starring Guy Williams with her grandma (dad's side) until gram passed away. The character served as a blueprint for the person she wanted to become as an adult: someone who did good for others without them knowing (or getting praise for it) and stuck it to the bad guys by being clever.
Fencing (inspired by Zorro). Sawyer always wanted to try it out, but she didn't get into it until she reached adulthood, when her friend Samuel covered her lessons in exchange for her achieving sobriety.

Sawyer had a group of friends in high school called "The Pod," which consisted of Carmen (her cousin), Theo, Janis, Carry, and Martin. She met the gang at a bush party in the woods near the Arklay Mountains (way before the Mansion Incident, so no zombies roaming around) hosted by high school seniors when she was a freshman, and they all got close. What attracted Sawyer to them was their humor and carefree spirits, and despite getting into mischief, they were all loyal to one another.
Sawyer dated Janis in her junior year. They had a strong relationship, but they both got tired of hiding it from their families and decided to end it. Given the social pressures of the time, they both didn't feel safe being out. Sawyer knew she was also attracted to men and didn't want to limit herself, whereas Janis was strictly into women. They remained on good terms until Janis, unfortunately, perished during the Raccoon City Incident along with Martin and Carry.
During Sawyer's senior year, she and Theo tried dating and hit it off well, but they broke up amicably because they had different goals and aspirations. Theo was more traditional and wanted a big family someday, which went against Sawyer's college ambitions. Theo survived Raccoon City and he and Sawyer went into contact again as friends, but he tragically committed suicide a few months later because of the horrors he witnessed.
Samuel is someone Sawyer considers family ever since he took her under his wing when she was going through alcoholism and helped her land a job with TerraSave and eventually VITA. The two bonded over their shared trauma from loss due to Umbrella's meddling and also bonded over mutual likes (computers, music, books, etc.). Sawyer initially didn't hold romantic feelings toward Samuel but eventually developed a crush on him, which went unrequited since he loved her more like a sibling. However, he was secretly open to the idea, but only when they'd both call it quits with VITA. Unfortunately, that conversation never came up since Samuel caught feelings for a member of the organization and figured it would be best to keep his current relationship with Sawyer as is without complicating it.
Sawyer looks for someone who makes her safe with friends and romantic partners. In past relationships (and when caring for her cousin Carmen), she took on most of the brunt when protecting and showing up emotionally, so many of her needs were unmet. She'd like to be with someone who can appreciate her strength, give her a chance to breathe, and take some of the mental load off her. That being said, Sawyer has a hard time vocalizing this to others (much of this also ties into being parentified/big sister syndrome since she was the oldest between herself and Carmen and, thereby, was expected to "take care of Carmen") and also struggles with conveying she likes sappy romantic gestures. She also values humor and doesn't care much for people with a stick up their ass when it comes to being funny.
Currently in Duality, Sawyer's starting to consider Luis (Two Legs) a friend or someone who could be found family since he went through a lot of turmoil to keep her alive.

Sawyer typically shows she cares through acts of service, such as helping someone with a task, bringing/sharing a snack, or going through the trouble of setting up something important. If she holds the other person in high regard or has affection for them, her physical go-to is holding hands and hugging from behind. She knows she's cared for by others through acts of service, and if she trusts them, physical touch and sharing quiet moments. Sometimes, doing nothing together says a lot more to her than being active.
🍁 Where does your OC go when they need to have some time to themself? Would they ever have their own “comfort corner” filled with all the things they like? Do they have a favourite spot outside that feels like its theirs and theirs alone?
When she was younger and Raccoon City was still around, Sawyer would hang out at the arcade or go to the pond at one of the parks to escape things. After the incident, she retreats to one of the hiking trails outside the new city where she and Carmen moved but stopped going altogether when her alcoholism got worse.
Presently, Sawyer doesn't have a favorite spot to call her own. Due to the nature of VITA and having to travel constantly to confront BOW dealers, she's never in one place for too long.
If Sawyer could have a comfort corner, it would be filled with the Zorro series and other related memorabilia, fencing swords, board and video games, music albums, and some books she likes. If she had more time, she could get into some other hobbies.

as a fellow member of the kristen/tracker need to break up club pls speak on it more
Ask and ye shall receive. So first of all like you said in the tags of that post they are extremely messy codependent and not the healthiest relationship in the world. Although to give them credit, they are actually remarkably functional for teenagers in their first relationship, and practice a good amount of effective communication, but they are still teenagers in their first relationship. And they live together. There is very little separation between the two of them, and I think Kristen especially probably ties her identity very heavily to Tracker. If they broke up, she'd have to completely re-evaluate herself.
On the other hand, it seems feasible to me that Tracker has some built up resentment toward Kristen; she was of course being possessed while in the nightmare forest and so we cannot take anything she said as truth, but it's true that Kristen's issues seemed to dominate their relationship and what they talk about. Kristen can often be selfish by accident, which already has caused some tension between them. To me it seems likely that that could build up, especially given their experiences in the nightmare forest and how they both hurt each other in there. (Another thing I wish we'd get out of junior year but doubt we will is the whole gang actually facing the trauma of adventuring, but given the genre it's unlikely and honestly I don't know if they could successfully pull it off even if they tried. But I digress).
Ultimately it comes down to the fact that they are teenagers in their first serious relationship, and they're both emotional disasters. They're also both starting two different religious sects in two different countries. Kristen most definitely will not handle the distance well, and I think Tracker could start to grow suffocated by her overwhelming attachment. Which brings me to my second point: it's the best decision for Kristen's character development, imo. Her arc in the first season was dealing with her sexuality and loss of faith. In the second, it was her finding a new faith, based around uncertainty and mystery. I think it's time for her to learn how to be a person and to embrace these things without Tracker to lean on, especially when it comes to sexuality. Tracker was her gay awakening! I think if they break up, she'll be lost and depressed and as full of doubt as she always has been, which is ofc where the most interesting character stuff happens. Who is she without Tracker? What does it mean to be gay when you aren't dating anyone? How do you navigate heartbreak? These are interesting questions to explore in relation to Kristen, but they're also quintessential to the themes of the whole story. Teen breakups are as much a part of coming of age as teen relationships, and to me it would just ring more honest if they didn't stay together. The whole "starting dating in high school and never break up" gets on my nerves to no end, and I just desperately want more media to explore ending relationships in a way that doesn't always portray it as a tragedy.
And of course, last and most important is that it would be really funny. Ally fucking nails awkward flirty horny-but-angry-about-it characters. They would roleplay that shit so well the post-breakup conversations with inappropriate flirting would be amazing. Just imagine the "inspiring" speeches that would come out of a breakup. Kristen could write angsty teen lesbian poetry. The possibilities are endless and 75% of them are hilarious

BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! Review
This anime review needs to start with some personal backstory.
I've been a fan of the Bandori franchise since 2018, which by standard metrics means I'm ancient around here. I've seen the addition of two other bands to the original five the franchise (re)launched with, both with their issues in being folded into the story well. When MyGO (I'm not typing out five exclamation marks every time, I'm sorry) was revealed to be the eighth band in this universe after existing for a year IRL with no information where they existed in the franchise, I was extremely pessimistic. When they were revealed to be first year high schoolers (for the most part), I was pessimistic because the franchise just made the large step of graduating its oldest characters into university, opening up the story to new experiences. And shortly before the anime debut, when they were revealed to be getting added to the mobile game, I was pessimistic because the game's writing has been relatively poor in character development and even event distribution and focus for the past two years.
So saying I was going into this anime looking at it with as much dislike as I held for Aqours at the end of the µ's era is an understatement. I didn't expect much - just wanted a decent narrowly focused show akin to season 1, showing how a new band gets formed.
From the first episode, my expectations were met. From the third episode, they were blown away.
The premise written, about a girl, Chihaya Anon, who starts the school year late because of reasons revealed later, wanting to join a band when everyone else is already in one, except for their class "weirdo", Takamatsu Tomori, doesn't even scratch the surface of what happens. From the beginning that shows the result of what happens when a band has a catastrophic break up, how that affects every member involved there, to Anon who walks into this minefield and attempts to navigate it stepping on multiple mines along the way, to what's needed for this band to actually form in the end - it takes the entire season, but the feeling of the the payoff is immense.
On to the characters. Each one of these characters is flawed and human. Tomori can't communicate her feelings or words well in speech, and feels everything that goes wrong is her fault. Anon runs away at the first sign of any extra work needed to succeed. Taki's overprotectiveness of Tomori and initial inability to accept others help cause her to become combative to others. Rana only sticks around when she finds things interesting, later revealing she's been trying to find another place to belong after her grandmother's live house shut down (yay season 1 callback!). And Soyo, who looked at older characters Sayo, Chisato, and CHU2 who were all disliked by the fandom at their introductions and said "hold my tea." Soyo's arc takes up the majority of the middle portion of the series, the threads of her arc being hinted at along the way before her turn, her mask cracking, and her eventual acceptance of what has happened in her life post-CRYCHIC.
And that's only the characters in MyGO proper. This story couldn't be told without five others, the girls that eventually form the group Ave Mujica at the end of the season in the final episode. Sakiko, probably the new most disliked character in the franchise, drives the plot train of "why did she break up CRYCHIC?" that started the series, leading up to the final reveal of her situation in life currently. Mutsumi, her friend, Soyo's friend, someone who has been strung along and used by others. Uika, a popular singer in an idol group, who is also Sakiko's friend, and the one who spurred Tomori to perform again. Umiri, Taki's classmate full of snarky banter, who also gave Tomori her best wishes. Nyamu is the character who just "exists" the most, but her two-faced influencer personality is setting up for trouble.
There are little bits here and there to remind existing fans that this is taking place in the same universe at the current point of the timeline, which I appreciated as it was not heavy handed. Of course the girls would run into Saya and Kasumi at Livehouse RiNG, as both frequent or work there. Of course they would meet Afterglow at a live, be inspired by Morfonica, or see the Roselia posters in the old astronomy club room. The only band to not have any representation is Hello, Happy World!, which while on one hand makes sense with the overall melancholy of the series, but as they are still a band that exists here, some showing would've been nice - Misaki at school, a Michelle sighting in town, Kanon at the aquarium, basically anything grounded for them.
As this is a music-themed franchise, the use of music is of course important. Most importantly are the use of the vocal songs - typically in these series you get the short cut and just assume the groups performed other songs off screen. Instead, MyGO uses multiple full length songs, where some were even re-recorded from the anime to sound rougher if needed - Hekitenbansou in episode 7 being the main example of this. This does make a couple of the episodes be half performance/song, but in the first case it's their first performance as a group and sets up Soyo's arc, and the second case in episode 12, it's their first performance as a true band.
The camera and scenery work is top-notch and a great example of what CG animation can do. Sanzigen levels up with every series they do, and comparing Bandori S2 to D4DJ First Mix to this demonstrates how they've started blending in more 2D for more varied expressions and movement, and improved their lighting in backgrounds. Stand out moments are every time Soyo is framed in slight darkness, the varied spacing and views of characters in rooms to show distance or discomfort, and the entirety of episode 3 being from Tomori's first person POV - the most unique way to do a flashback episode that I've ever seen in an anime.
The only flaws I have with the series are relatively minor - the opening sequence, while a great song, doesn't have too many interesting shots compared to previous Bandori seasons (the second version of Kizuna Music is one of my favorite OPs ever). Episode 13 is more of a victory lap for MyGO, before heading face first into a prologue for the upcoming Ave Mujica anime, which if you're not invested in that group can feel like a non-ending. Additionally, there's a few non-Sakiko related loose ends between MyGO that have probably been saved for the mobile game, which if you don't play that, tough luck, go wait for other people to play it and upload stories to Youtube. For English server players it's an even longer wait as MyGO isn't being added to that server until spring 2024.
This is the sleeper hit of the summer 2023 season, the one that'll be always called criminally underrated and brought up as something worth watching in future threads about animes you love but no one talks about. Which is a shame, as it deserves to stand next to series like K-ON! and Bocchi the Rock that are some of the most frequently recommended music anime. Rating: 9/10

Existing On The Deepest Cracks, The Anatomy of The Film Characters in "The Perks of Being a Wallflower"
The film “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is a movie from the book of its same name. It was written by Stephen Chbosky and was released in 1999. The film was later directed by the author and was released in 2012. Though the 13 year gap of the book and film, the topics tackled both the books and the film didn’t change and is still considered somewhat controversial for groups of people.
The movie started with the star of the film, Charlie. Charlie has suffered from clinical depression since he was a child and was recently discharged from a mental health institution. Writing letters became the core of Charlie’s life, he writes to an unnamed friend, in order to feel heard and to have someone figure out his life with him. Charlie is now embarking on his life as a high school student, but finds it difficult to make friends with fellow students, which made his literature teacher his only friend. This part of the film reveals the heart wrenching state of people diagnosed with mental health problems. Not a lot of people with mental health problems have access to mental health institutions, but it is almost certain that the majority of them are left alone or will be casted as misfits of this society. People with mental health problems are often left to figure out their life on their own without people looking or assisting them. As their health problems aren't obvious physically and more difficult to diagnose, their condition seems to be ignored or underestimated by society making it difficult for them to ask help from people who could greatly improve their condition.
A few minutes into the film at the homecoming dance, Charlie meets two seniors Sam and Patrick who are stepsiblings. After some time at the party, Charlie unknowingly ate a cannabis brownie which made him high. The intoxication made him do different speeches to the party-goers which made them amused by him. Later that night Charlie disclosed to Sam that his friend died from suicide few years ago, which made Sam reach to the conclusion that Charlie doesn’t have any friends. In this short part of the film, as what was written in the paragraph before, people with mental health issues are often left alone to figure out their life, which may led them to create harmful decisions accidentally.
Later that night, Charlie went upstairs to the party, where he witnessed Patrick and Brad — the quarterback of the football team making out. Patrick requested Charlie not to disclose that information to anyone, most importantly to his father, who would obviously disapprove. In this section of the film, it is very apparent that both of the boys are repressed for being their true self and living on their own terms re: his sexuality. But there is a very big division between Patrick and Brad’s state. Patrick is a flamboyant man and is very comfortable on his own skin, Patrick is represented as the stereotypical gay man but still feels the need to hide his own sexuality to the people especially to his father in order to not feel the fear of being disapproved of by them. On Brad's side, Brad's reputation is powered with dominant masculinity, he is a popular jock, the quarterback, and one of the best football players in the team. His fear of presenting his real sexuality as a gay man was so palpable that he needed to get drunk in order to be with Patrick. This situation is still experienced by the LGBTQ community. A lot of them need to hide their sexuality in order to be accepted by their friends, colleagues, and most importantly their family. A lot of them, especially the ‘closeted’ ones, feel the need to put on the mask or hide their true self in order to fit in with the society.
As the movie progresses, it is shown that Sam and Charlie are in love with each other, Sam being Charlie’s first kiss and Charlie being Sam’s first consented kiss. Sam disclosed that her first kiss was his father’s boss who molested her. Later on in the film, it was revealed that Charlie was sexually assaulted by his aunt as a child, which led him to be traumatized with intimate relationships ever since. Sam did not disclose the assault by himself, but it was uncovered by a psychiatrist.. In our society, molesting and sexual assault is still a taboo to be openly discussed. The blame and scrutiny of the assault goes heavily to the victims, either blaming them or degrading them. The taboo surrounding sexual assault leads victims to keep the situation to themselves by not reporting it to the authorities or getting the help they need which will eventually cause bigger problems that will affect them for the rest of their lives.
At the end of the movie, Charlie — who was discharged from the mental institution for the 2nd time -- was fetched by Patrick and Sam to dine in the group’s favorite restaurant. On their way to the hospital, they drove through a tunnel with the song “Hero” by David Bowie playing on the background with the lyrics “Just for one day, we can be heroes, we're nothing, and nothing will help us, maybe we're lying, then you better not stay, but we could be safer, just for one day”. In this film it’s not just one character who is oppressed or marginalized, all of them were. They had different issues, issues that most of the time people overlook and underestimate. The characters fought through their different problems. Their problems were considered to be ‘nothing’ by the society, and were not given appropriate help at all from the society, but with their inner strength, the fire inside them burned brighter than the fire around them. They became safe — safe from their problems, safe from the people judging them, and safe from destroying their identity and true self.

Okay, I had made a much more narrow-minded comment on this earlier and I've deleted it, because I was looking at these again and they're actually not that bad, given what kids have to work with these days and considering that many of these kids would have been 8 - 10 during the Panini and are probably behind where they should be on reading/writing/spelling. The spellings fell into a few categories:
The phonetically sound: tradgyty, tragety, tradgedy (so close!), tragidy, tra(j)edy, These kids, not knowing how to spell the word but having heard it clearly, did their best to replicate the sound. All of these kids understand what sounds the letters make but probably not all the nooks and crannies of bullshittery the English language pulls. The dyslexic: tradegy, trad(e)ady These pull at my heartstrings because both of these are obviously erased and re-written a couple of times. They knew they didn't have it right but weren't sure why. The "it would have worked if people didn't talk so fast and English didn't suck so much": several "Tradgey"s If you showed a native English speaker/reader the letters "d" and "g" right next to each other, they'd pronounce it "duh-guh" or "duh-zhuh" depending on what letters came after. I'm betting these kids, who didn't read or hear the word very much, misheard their fluent teachers and got the syllables mixed up. The "one letter off/eh, close enough": tragdey, tragedey, tradgy A for effort. The "new English learner": trade, tragia These are the writings of a child who may have only been speaking English fluently for a couple years and are now expected to write essays about Romeo and fucking Juliet. This student is struggling at home: trordity (tradity?) the writing is a mix between "not comfortable holding a pen" and "doesn't give a shit." Take this kid out to Burger King. I could spell pretty well in the 9th grade and had very high reading comprehension (I was one of those "reading at a college level" kids before we all found out that doesn't actually mean anything), but I also didn't grow up with autocorrect or even spell check, I went to a well-funded school in a privileged neighborhood, was read to as a toddler, and was a latchkey kid with no cable (so I read a lot of books). I had been asking myself "how can we get kids more invested in spelling and grammar?" when I suddenly thought, "do they need to be?" If you're talking about daily usage of the English language, spellcheck and autocorrect take care of the vast majority of common spelling issues (and a lot of the grammatical mistakes). Hell, you can just use speech-to-text and not have to touch the keyboard at all.
And if you want to argue "what about college?" like. What about it? If you want to be an English major, you'll learn how to spell eventually (or not-- I met a ton of teachers in my misspent youth who couldn't fucking spell), and if you don't, again, does it even matter in this day and age? Pretending that you need to be able to "sound educated" to get a job these days is a fucking joke and we all know it, to say nothing of "getting a degree to find a better job." Kids do still read, and write, and create. They do it in a different way than we old hags did before the Internet Age, but then, we did it differently than our grandparents did. You can type-- can you use a typewriter? I promise it's not the same as typing on even the most ancient of computer keyboards, even if you're using an electric typewriter. It stings a little to realize that the things we placed so much importance on twenty or thirty years ago are becoming obsolete, because it makes us remember that we've been barrelling forward, putting one staggering foot in front of the other, day to day, week to week, year to year. You think, "psh, when I was in school--" and then stop, realizing that you were in school two decades ago, and the baby that was born on the day of your high school graduation is old enough to drink. Oh. Death. Aren't you here early? No? I must have lost track of the time...
Another year, another group of my delightful ninth graders trying to spell the word "tragedy" for their Romeo and Juliet assignment.

Sherrie McCutcheon: 'Every Life Can Make An Impact'
Her voice stops us still because, for three decades, it was Sherrie McCutcheon’s speech tones that made us halt and listen because, after all, it had to be important. Had to be. Good news, bad news, if it was Sherrie, something was up and you needed to know. Whether it was fatal flooding, a traffic-screeching winter storm, cold-blooded murder, or a schedule change at Jamboree in the Hills, there she was, Sherrie McCutcheon. Or Sherrie Dunlevy, actually, the wife of Rob and mom to Trey who left television and re-invented to radio more than 15 years ago. When that gig no longer suited her and her goals, she turned the dial to her current career as a motivational speaker, an author, and a public figure who lends her persona to causes good for her community. In fact, since the beginning of February, she’s joined Katie Everson in the Women of Impact Campaign for the American Heart Association to raise funds and awareness about the imperative research on the prevention of strokes and heart disease. Both issues, by the way, have hit smack-dab in the middle of home for Dunlevy and that’s why she’s worn red, attended a plethora of events, and is set to host the SELF CARE SATURDAY event (9 a.m. – Noon) in two days at The Highlands Events Center. Sherrie has attended several events for the American Heart Association the past two months. You agreed to be a part of the Woman of Impact campaign to help others in need of heart awareness, but what have you learned along the way? When I was asked to accept the nomination by the American Heart Association, I truly believed I did not have the resources or support necessary to help them. Then I remembered the tagline I’ve written at the bottom of each email I send: “Every life makes a difference and every life can make an impact.” So, I thought, well, now I have to walk the talk. My biggest lesson is about impact. I’ve learned how one person can make an impact, but I have also learned that when you get a group of positive-minded women who agree to work together for something bigger than ourselves, you can make amazing things happen in your community and in the world. How will those learned lessons be applied to your career as a motivational speaker and best-selling author at Spirit Spikes? Every time I present to an audience, I tell the story of my son Brandon. He only lived 29 days, and yet his life mattered and continues to make an impact. So, this fits in perfectly with that message. But this campaign has also allowed me to dream bigger, and it has forced me to step out of my comfort zone to achieve my goals. I have had to ask for help and allow myself to receive the help that was offered. These are all things I talk about with audiences and write about in my blogs and social media posts. Sherrie gives motivational speeches to those looking to change direction. Are people still recovering from social impacts of the coronavirus pandemic? What ways have you suggested to overcome the encountered issues? Absolutely they are! Most people have been grieving some kind of loss as a result of the pandemic (whether it was a death or just losing the ability to live life the way they were used to). So many lost high school football seasons, weddings, reunions, and holidays, but the biggest problem is that most don’t identify these feelings as grief. So, the effects of unresolved grief are coming out as rudeness, unruliness, hostility, rage, anger, and divisiveness. How do we overcome it? I think first we have to recognize, try to understand it, take measures to heal it, and extend grace and kindness to ourselves and others Focus – how difficult is it for men and women to find a new focus once children become grown adults, and what advice do you offer? It depends. For some, it is the dawn of a new era. For others, it is experienced as a great loss. Depending on how each person sees it can determine how they handle this time of life. My best advice: Get to know yourself again. Discover new things, have new experiences, or revisit old dreams and goals. This is the perfect time for writing a great second chapter. Tell us about the Self Care Saturday that is scheduled for April 1 from 9-12 p.m. at the Highlands Event Center. It’s a mini women’s conference designed to raise awareness of women’s overall health and well-being while raising funds for the American Heart Association. We have speakers doing presentations on stress and anxiety reduction, burnout, how to sleep better, and why it’s essential to our health and how connecting to creativity can enhance your mental well-being. speech anon! i'm not responding to your main ask, not ur fault there's just some stuff in there i don't really want on this blog. /nm
anyway, i'm actually referring to something Completely different. not Presently in the mood to discuss, but you can probably track it down in one of my hollyshine posts.
anyway, i did a lot of public speaking in high school, so here's my quick tips, if you want them. can't promise they'll work, but:
if you can, memorize whatever you have to say. even if you don't have to. even if you still hold the papers/cards as something to do with your hands. i used to recite stuff walking to school.
that's just generally good advice, high schoolers. don't make cards for presentations. just learn what's on your slides. you will Sound Better. exception: if you're allowed to have a computer in front of you, then you can have cards there. but it has to like. you can't be looking down and speaking. if you start now, when teachers inevitably say no cards, you'll already be prepared
(also, i'm drifting but, if you're doing a foreign language presentation, do not make your notes/cards translations. write them in the language you are presenting in. do not let a single word of your other language enter your cards. the only exception is if you need to give the translation of a word in the presentation, and even then, i'd say you don't know your presentation well enough if you need the translation)
anyway, memorizing what you have to say helps with confidence. and confidence Will make you sound better
remember that it Will get easier with time.
and it sounds a little silly, but if you have a lot of stuffed animals, sometimes you can emulate an audience by setting them up.
if you're allowed to, i was always more comfortable speaking off the cuff. i know sometimes you have to read something as written (which is when you memorize), but for model un, i gave all of my opening statements by bullet points.
seriously, though, giving yourself permission to go off the cuff can help. i know this contradicts my first point, but if you often forget words or get stuck on words, knowing that you can just work around it is helpful.
like, okay, sometimes i get stuck on a word and i just can't say it. or, because i had to do my Least Favourite Activity today and record my own voice, i can't move on to the next part of a sentence. i had to do my Least Favourite Activity today which meant i just had to repeat the last few words until i could move on but at least i'm in therapy for the voice thing, not the fluency thing.
i took an improv class and i cannot tell you how helpful it is in my everyday life. this might not help you, but like. insanely helpful. it was...maybe eight weeks? twelve weeks? best experience of my life.
because i Hate Thinking About Speaking, the whole slow down or count breaths stuff doesn't really work for me. like please stop i don't want to think about how i speak i have a Problem with it.
so what i did was listen to slam poetry. i'm good at reciting things, i can do a Lot of poems from memory
(fun fact! i once filled in for a poetry reading because i had the right poem memorized. hope is a thing with feathers. that perches in the soul. and sings the tune without the words. this isn't impressive because i could've just looked it up but it was cool at the time.)
anyway, listening to them, and reciting them, helped me just naturally find a speaking rhythm
i did it a lot, now if i have to read something out loud i default to it
again i'm approaching this all from like. i have a speech impediment and a fluency disorder. i have a Lot of feelings about speaking that are all very complicated. so maybe none of this is helpful
i don't have a ton to say about stage fright? except okay when i had an oboe solo in my sophomore year and there was a senior who was lowkey highkey bullying me because he was intimidated by me (why i have no idea i was like. i should not have been intimidated. he got paid money to go to college. god i hate him. but this is all another story.)
okay anyway to summarize, had a panic attack when my boyfriend threw me into his ensemble without warning, had to do a solo in spring, cm was staring at me like he Knew i was going to fuck this up
and of course when you have anxiety you do worse and I Knew This so i just.
balled up my anger real tight and said no! i am going to do this with every ounce of air in my body because fuck you cm, you do Not know what i am capable of
so i really recommend being motivated by spite. it's not like. i'm not saying long term. i'm just saying it can get you through a tight spot.
anyway, high school is a rough time. it's four years, you can get through it.

In 2007, Owens, a senior at Stamford High School, made headlines for a very different reason: she was the victim of an alleged racial hate crime, which, peripherally, involved the son of Democrat Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, then-mayor of Stamford.
The incident set off a chain of events that, she said, eventually sparked her political ideology. Two years ago, Owens wouldn’t even have called herself a conservative.
EARLY MEDIA GLARE
The voicemails left on Owens’s phone by four boys in a car altered her life, Owens says.
“They started off by telling me that they were going to kill me ‘just because’ I was black,” Owens wrote in a 2016 op-ed published in Hearst Connecticut Media. “They warned me that if they found me at home, they were going to unload a bullet into the back of my head.”
Owens told the principal and the story spread quickly to state and national media, especially when Malloy acknowledged that his son was in the car.
The NAACP held press conferences with Owens. Police and FBI investigated the incident and one seventeen-year-old boy, who Owens says was a friend of hers, was arrested.
Owens’s family sued the Stamford Board of Education for failing to protect her and won a $37,500 settlement.
“If I was a leftist or if I was a true Democrat, I would relish in victimhood. I would love that. I would say I’m black, I’m a woman, I can’t do anything and it’s all your fault. That situation in high school would be the pinnacle of my life,” she said. “But I hated it. I cowed away from it. It ate me alive because I felt there was permanence in what was said about me.”
In response to Owens’s experience in high school, she decided to launch an anti-cyberbullying website - essentially a searchable database of offensive speech found on social media. She launched a Kickstarter to fund the effort and received a flood of criticism in response. She somehow jumped to the conclusion that liberals posing as Trump supporters online were behind the attacks because they did not want her to “unmask” them, Owens said.
This experience was Owens’s “red pill” - or conservative awakening, a la “The Matrix.”
She dropped out of the University of Rhode Island in her junior year, and devoted the next year to re-educate herself. She read works by Ann Coulter, Milo Yiannopoulos, Ben Carson and Thomas Sowell.
Now 29, no one would dare mistake Owens for a victim.
In her first YouTube video posted in August 2017, Owens came out as a conservative.
In the parody video, Owens’s parents - played by Owens - are accepting when she says she is a lesbian (she is not), but appalled that she is a conservative. In real life, Owens and her parents did not have a sit-down about her new ideology, Owens said.
“I was not surprised,” said Robert Owens, Candace’s father who now lives in Arizona. “We don’t agree on some issues, which I care not to mention, but I will say I support her in bringing both sides to the table; Democrats should not assume they have our vote because we are African Americans and Republicans should not ignore African Americans because they assume we are going to vote Democrat.”

On September 19th 1778, Henry, Lord Brougham, the Scottish Whig statesman and jurist was born in Edinburgh.
Henry Brougham, the eldest son of Henry Brougham and Eleanora Syme Brougham who were modest landowners in the Capital. At the age of seven he was sent to the local high school, Henry, was extremely intelligent and was accepted as a student at the University of Edinburgh at the age of 14. At first Brougham studied science and mathematics and while still a student presented a paper Experiments and Observations of the Infection, Reflection and Colours of Light, to the Royal Society. Brougham became interested in law and in 1800 joined the university’s faculty of advocates. Although a very good solicitor he never enjoyed his time at the bar and soon became disillusioned with it. In 1802 Brougham and a few friends founded the journal Edinburgh Review. In the next two years Brougham contributed thirty-five articles.
In politics Brougham became a prominent Whig and rose to the position of Lord Chancellor in 1830. The Brougham, a small horse-drawn, four-wheeled carriage, was named in his honour.
Brougham contested the Rectorial election with the novelist Sir Walter Scott and the lawyer and writer Henry Mackenzie. He tied with Sir Walter and won the election on the casting vote of the outgoing Rector, Sir James Mackintosh.
Brougham established himself as one of the leading radicals in Parliament. His first great parliamentary speech was on the issue of slavery. In June 1810 he complained that the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was ineffective. Brougham argued that Britain was doing nothing to end "this abominable commerce". Yet she was always ready to use her power "when the object is to obtain new colonies and extend the slave trade; then we can both conquer and treat; we have force enough to seize whole provinces where the slave trade might be planted and skill enough to retain them and the additional commerce in slaves their cultivation requires.
In March 1811 Brougham introduced a bill (which passed) to make it illegal to trade in slaves. This was a much more effective sanction to the ones that was part of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act.
Much later in his parliamentary “career” he introduced the Lord Brougham Act of 1856. This was also called The Cooling off act and was an attempt to appease protest against the Gretna Green wedding ceremonies, which were said to be “immoral and disgusting.”
The act required one person in the couple to reside in the parish where they wished to marry for 21 days. This new act did 'cool off' the flow of anvil weddings but the cunning and romantic residents of Gretna Green were not to be thwarted.
Local people would happily conceal a run-away for the 21 days required, and farmers would turn a blind eye to strangers who appeared to be using their barns as temporary sleeping quarters. No stranger to Gretna Green weddings himself, the Lord Chancellor Lord Brougham, in the fire of his youth, eloped to Scotland to marry. His 37-year marriage, however, was an unhappy one and some say that he wanted to stop impetuous young couples making the same mistake that he had and that is why he introduced the 'cooling off' requirement.
Brougham also argued for education reform and was a supporter of the Ragged Schools championed by another Scot Dr Thomas Guthrie.
Henry Brougham moved to the continent and was originally planning on going to Genoa but a cholera outbreak forced him to make a detour and he ended up in Cannes where he fell in love with the place, he supported the building of a port there and encouraged his friends to visit turning the once sleepy town into the popular holiday destination it is today, died on 17th May, 1868 at Château Eleanor-Louise, Cannes, and was buried on 24th May in the town’s cemetery, as seen in the drawing, it’s an impressive grave.
He was the designer of the brougham, a four-wheeled, horse-drawn style carriage that bears his name. Brougham holds the House of Commons record for non-stop speaking at six hours! Brougham Street and Brougham Place in Edinburgh are named in his memory.

"Hey Cowgirl, how do you cook a skate?"
Fliss had to read the message twice "I'm assuming you’re talking about the fish..."
"No an ice skate..." the sarcasm dripped of his reply and she could just imagine him rolling his eyes.
"Where the fuck did u get an ice skate in South Pass?" she giggled to herself as she typed her response.
"R u deliberately being an ass?"
"Why did u get a skate when u don’t know how to cook one?"
"I don't know how to cook a lot of things. And there was a guy at the harbour giving them away. Extra catch he said. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth etc…"
Fliss pondered something for a moment before she leaned back in her chair and continued the conversation "Well why don't u bring them round tonight and I'll do them. I still haven't cooked for you after the BBQ the other week"
"Don’t worry, I haven't taken it to heart that every time we've tried to arrange it you've cancelled"
"Piss off!" She laughed to herself as she replied "It’s this weather man, it's so hot... not my fault I've had to rejig all my lessons and exercise my own horses at 9pm... you've been busy too don't forget!"
"Busy time of year for Sailing, what can I say? As it happens I can do tonight but I'll have Mary. Is that ok?"
"No, Frank I expect you to leave her at home on her own... "
“Trust me if I could I would, she’s driving me insane at the moment.”
“Why?” Fliss frowned slightly as she hit send. Whilst she hadn’t really seen Frank other than the previous week for Mary’s riding lesson they talked often by text and he hadn’t mentioned she was playing up. And then she suddenly realised. It was the last Saturday of the Summer holidays. Mary started school on Monday. And she had already made her feelings about that very clear to Fliss, several times.
“I’ll explain later. What time?”
Fliss checked her watch. It was 4pm.
"Say 6 ish? I'll send you the post...I mean zip code...why the fuck do you lot call it a zip code anyway?"
"Stands for Zone Improvement Plan"
"That makes no sense"
"Course it does. Zip, its fast, as in the mail travels more efficiently, and more quickly when people use it"
"And you wonder why Mary is such a smart ass!"
"Whatever, see you at 6."
"Bye Sailor."
Standing up she slipped her phone into the back pocket of her riding breeches and headed out onto the main yard. It was empty. The weather had been scorching recently, so hot she had been forced to cancel a lot of lessons and offer something different to her students. She had been taking the younger kids on trail rides through the grounds that surrounded her yard and onto the waterside and then taught them basic horse care and grooming routines, whilst the older clients who wanted to continue their training had moved their sessions to earlier or later in the day. That said, she had no one left to teach today and she was giving her own 3 a rest so it was a case of making sure waters in the fields were topped up ready for evening turn out.
Thor was flopped in the shade of one of the stables, flat on his side. He cracked an eye open as she passed and his tail lazily thumped on the floor. “Oh boy…I know it’s hot…” she said with a chuckle, bending over to give him a scratch before she stood up and he did the same, trotting obediently at her heels as she headed through the gate and down the dirt tracks which led to the turn out paddock. Joanne, Ruby and Ellis her head groom and stable hands were busy with the water truck topping up the troughs in the bottom field.
“Hey guys.” she smiled “All ok?”
“Yeah,” Joanne nodded “We’ve topped all the others up, this is the last one.”
“Great, ok well let’s get them fed and then we can get them turned out and have an early finish.” Fliss smiled. “Ruby, Ellis, keep an eye on the water.”
The girl and boy nodded and then Fliss and Joanne headed back towards the yard.
“So, you doing anything tonight?” Joanne asked.
“Oh, erm, Mary and Frank are coming over for dinner.” Fliss said
“As in Mary and Frank Adler?” Joanne looked at Fliss.“God he is dreamy. Total fuck boy though.”
Fliss laughed, “So you told me. He’s a nice guy though, I enjoy talking to him.”
“Talking?” Joanne deadpanned “Seriously, you’ve got a sure thing there and you’re talking?”
Fliss snorted “Trust me I’m not looking for anything else, certainly not at the moment.”
“Yeah well, you never find anything when you’re looking for it do you?” Joanne said lightly as they walked into the feed store. “It’s always when you’re not that you come across it.”
Fliss looked at her for a moment. She’d be lying if she said she wasn’t attracted to Frank, she’d have to be blind not to be. But she wasn’t lying when she said she didn’t feel ready for a relationship just yet and it would have to take someone very special to change her mind. With a sigh she jerked her head in the direction of the containers which held the horse feed.
“Start scooping that lot out.”
Joanne did as she was told and a little over an hour later everything was turned out, fed and she made sure the staff knew who was on duty in the morning. With that she dismissed them early and set off to the store grabbing the ingredients she needed.
***** “Woah!” Mary said as Frank pulled up outside the gates “Does Fliss live here?”
“According to the directions…” Frank raised his eyebrows. He pulled out his phone and gave her a call.
“Hi, you at the gates?” she asked.
“I think so…”
“Ok hang on…” she instructed and Frank waited. A few seconds later the iron gates swung inwards. “Drive past the main house on your right and keep coming until the drive bends round. The annex is to the left behind the garage. Door’s open, just come on in.”
Frank took a deep breath and headed through the gate. Mary was looking out of the window at the large villa style house as they passed, her mouth hanging open. Bill emerged from the double garage to the left and Frank smiled at him, halting the truck.
“Alright lad?” Bill said, leaning on the top of the truck, talking through the open window. “Hey kid.”
“Hi Mr Gallagher.” Mary beamed. “We’re off to Fliss’ for dinner.”
“It’s Bill, Mary, my dad was Mr Gallagher. And you’re a lucky girl, Fliss’ cooking is superb!”
“Anything is better than Frank’s.” she informed him and Frank rolled his eyes.
“Mine too. I burn water.” Bill chuckled.
“You can’t do that.” Mary frowned, “It just evaporates.”
“It’s a figure of speech Mary, you know, a joke…” Frank looked at her shaking his head as Bill laughed.
“Well I’ll let you go.” he smiled, “Straight down the drive. Have a good evening.”
He straightened up and whistled, calling a small terrier to his heels before he headed over to a gate at the side. As he opened it, Frank just caught a glimpse of a spacious back yard and a pool before the gate snapped closed. Setting the truck forward again, he followed the drive and it turned left just before the fence, opening up into a space behind the garage where the small annex was set. It was a little detached, 2 storey building that was a similar style to the villa with a wooden door and a large bay window. The door was open and as Frank climbed out of the truck, the wrapped paper package of skate in his hand, Thor came bounding outside barking excitedly.
“Hey boy.” he said, giving the dog a pat before Thor turned his attention to Mary.
“Found it ok then?”
Frank looked up to see Fliss in the doorway. She was dressed in a pair of denim shorts that finished halfway up her toned thighs and a tight grey T-shirt which was distressed around the sleeves. Her hair was fastened back in a loose braid and she was barefoot. Frank felt a certain, and very unwelcome, pooling of arousal in the base of his stomach. Swallowing slightly he composed himself and smiled at her.
“Nice place.”
“Well the rents got a fair whack when they sold up in the UK so…” she shrugged “Sadly it’s not mine!”
He smiled, “This doesn’t look so bad.”
“Suits me, for the time being anyway until I can get my own place.” she smiled “We’re in the middle of re-decorating it so there’s stuff all over the dining room. We’ll eat outside if that’s ok?”
“Sure.” Frank smiled.
Fliss gave a sharp whistle and Thor immediately headed back towards her and into the house as Mary followed, pausing to give Fliss a hug. She led them inside and Frank looked around, the small porch area led into a square living room with a wooden floor which sported a large, light blue fluffy rug and a coffee table in the middle. There was a grey and black L-shaped sofa which ran along one wall and jutted out slightly around the edge of the coffee table and a huge flat screen TV and entertainment system nestled in the other corner which was surrounded by a huge rack of DVDs. On the wall above the sofa was a large framed photograph of Fliss with a chestnut horse, giving it a kiss on the nose, smiling as she did so, sunglasses covering her eyes. There were various other family shots in frames on other walls too. Taking it all in, Frank followed Fliss through an archway into the tiled dining room, which held a table against one wall and a display cabinet against the other which was full of trophies and rosettes. The walls were stripped bare and just as Fliss said there was a pile of decorating equipment sat in the corner. To the right a staircase headed upstairs and in front of them were double butler doors which led into the small country style kitchen. The rear doors were open onto a small flagged yard which sported a decking area upon which sat a table and some chairs. Various pot plants were scattered around the yard area and there was a wicker sofa and chair set with a smaller table and a hot tub nestled into the corner of the fence and the wall, under the kitchen windows.
“This is an annex?” Frank deadpanned looking around. Fliss turned to him, blushing slightly.
“I know, I’m very lucky.” she shrugged. “It’s as good as having my own place.”
“It’s really cool” Mary hummed “Can I go outside?”
“Knock yourself out.” Fliss said as Mary disappeared into the yard, Thor following. “So, where’s this fish?”
Frank dropped the package onto the side and Fliss peeled the paper open.
“Oooh they look great!” She grinned. “So I’m gonna pan fry them with some lemon, garlic and then I’ve done some potatoes and salad…nothing fancy but…”
“Sounds good.” Frank nodded.
“Is there anything Mary doesn’t like?”
“Tomatoes.” Frank said “I mean if they’re in a sauce of pasta she’s fine but…”
“Devil veg.” Fliss wrinkled her nose.
“Actually they’re a fruit.” Frank teased as she looked at him.
“You ever seen a tomato in a fruit salad?” she shot back, reaching around him to open the large fridge.
He laughed and moved out of her way “That’s exactly the reply Mary gives me.”
“Like I said, smart kid.” Fliss grabbed two beers before bumping the fridge door shut with her hip. She opened a drawer and grabbed a bottle opener, flipping off the cap before handing one to Frank.
“Thanks. So, is there anything I can do to help or…”
“No, everything’s done bar the fish so…” she shook her head “Stand and watch Sailor, you might learn something.”
He stood leaning against the counter as she worked, settling into comfortable chat, watching as she cleaned, skinned and filleted the fish before squeezing fresh lemon over it and tossing it into a hot pan with a few cloves of garlic.
“It doesn’t take long” she said, “Do you wanna grab me a few plates?”
“Sure.” he nodded, “err…”
“Cupboard behind you, to the right.” she said over her shoulder as she pulled a salad out of the fridge and drizzled it lightly with a mixture of balsamic, oil and lemon. She did the same with the cold potatoes before she turned the heat off the stove and divided the fish up into 2 larger pieces and a smaller one for Mary.
She gently slid the slices onto the plates and then she nodded. “All done.”
“Well that looked easy.” Frank said
“You can try it yourself next time.” she looked at him, handing him the two bowls “Can you take those out the table?”
He picked them up easily and carried them outside, Mary instantly scrambling up from where she had been sat on the outside sofa with Thor and following him.
Fliss walked out with the plates which contained the fish and they all settled down, Frank placing some potatoes and salad onto Mary’s plate before doing the same for Fliss as she headed back inside for 2 more beers and an apple juice for Mary.
“This is really good!” the seven year old enthused.
“Don’t talk with your mouthful.” Frank looked at her and she gave him a filthy scowl which made Fliss laugh.
“She looks a bit like you when she does that.”
“I do not.” Mary replied indignantly.
Fliss merely smiled as she stabbed another potato and popped it into her mouth “Whatever you say.”
Mary shot her another look which earned her one back from Frank. She met his eyes with her own and gave a shrug, diving back into her food.
“Fred would like this.” she said, looking at her fish.
“Good job because I saved him the scraps.” Fliss said.
“Did you?” Mary looked at her, smiling. Fliss nodded.
Frank watched the easy exchange between the two, smiling softly. Mary had been in a foul mood all afternoon after he had taken her shopping for a few outfits for School. She had been kicking off about the fact she had to go on Monday, but he was sticking to his decision. She needed to go, be a kid, have a normal life.
“You alright?” Fliss looked at him and he nodded
“Yeah, just thinking that’s all.” he said, “Nothing serious.”
Fliss accepted his answer, even though she didn’t believe him and she changed the subject, telling Mary about a few of the things she had planned for her next riding lesson which wasn’t for another 10 days seeing as she had been for one the Saturday before.
“Can I come this Saturday?” she pleaded.
“Mary…” Frank sighed “We discussed this, once a fortnight…”
Mary scowled again and Frank let out a groan.
“Well, if it’s okay with Frank you could come up later in the day and help me with my three.” Fliss said, looking at him. “You can help Joanne with the poles on the jumps and the feeds.”
“Oh, please Frank can I?”
Frank looked at Mary then to Fliss “You sure?”
Fliss nodded “Course”
“Alright.” Frank nodded “But one more tantrum about school between then and now and you’re not going understood?”
Mary pouted a little, clearly considering this bargain before she sighed “Okay.”
When they had finished eating Frank helped Fliss clear down the table. She told him to drop the dished into the sink whilst she placed the left over salad into tubs and back in the fridge.
“So School still a sore subject?” She queried.
“Oh fuck me…” Frank sighed “Sore?” he rubbed at his temple “Monday is gonna be a nightmare.”
“She’ll get used to it.” Fliss said “She’s bound to feel a little put out a first but she’ll settle.”
“I just hope I’m doing the right thing” Frank let out a deep breath.
“You can’t do anything but your best, Frank. That’s all any of us can do.”
“Yeah, suppose.” he shrugged. “Anyway, enough about that…been meaning to ask, how’s it been with shuffling all the lessons around?”
“We’ve managed.” Fliss shrugged, heading back outside “takings are down but…well, you always get peaks and troughs.”
“Tell me about it. Boat work slows up a lot November through January.” Frank shrugged.
“You should branch out into tractor fixing.” Fliss said, settling onto the sofa next to Mary who was busy flicking through a book she had brought. Fliss glanced down and grinned “Moby Dick?”
“Yeah…” Mary looked at her “You read it?”
“A while back. I used to read a lot.”
“What’s your favourite book?” Mary asked.
“Honestly?” Fliss smiled “It’s Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.”
“Isn’t that for kids?”
“Mary…” Frank groaned “You are a kid.”
“Fliss isn’t” Mary shot back.
“No but I was when those books were released. The first one came out in 1997, I was only 13. I grew up reading them.”
Mary contemplated this. “And they’re good?”
“Yeah.” Fliss smiled “I love Harry Potter. That’s what this is…”
She pointed to the tattoo which circled her left ankle Frank glanced down at the writing, which curved around and then formed into the outline of a stag’s head on her Achilles tendon. It was quite a delicate design. Mary studied it carefully.
“Expecto Patronum…” she said, reading it out “What does that mean?”
“It’s a spell.” Fliss told her, “So in one of the books Harry has to cast it to protect himself from these creatures…and his Patonus, the thing the spell conjures, takes the form of a stag. The writing, see…” Fliss traced it with her finger “That’s the author, JK Rowling’s handwriting. I had it done a year ago, kind of a reminder to me that no matter how bad things get there’s always a way to make it better.”
Mary nodded thoughtfully. “Maybe I’ll read them then.”
“Do you want to borrow the first one?” Fliss asked “And then once you’ve done maybe one night we can watch the movie.”
“Please.” Mary nodded.
Fliss stood up and nodded for Mary to follow so she did. “be right back.”
Frank waved them away and Fliss led Mary upstairs into the spare room. It was still full of boxes, some which littered the bottom of the bunk beds. She dug into a box, found the book, and handed it to Mary. Mary took it gently and examined the cover.
“Thank you. I’ll take good care of it I promise.” Mary nodded “Can I see your bedroom?”
Fliss laughed and nodded “Sure.” she led her across the hall into the larger bedroom and let Mary walk in and look round at the airy room, glancing at the bed which was made and adorned with a light blue and yellow bed spread and a few cushions.
“It’s tidier than Franks.” Mary mused and Fliss laughed.
“I’m a girl.” she shrugged. “We’re always tidier than men.”
“Is that you?” Mary asked, striding over to a photo that was on the bedside table.
Fliss nodded as Mary looked at the frame, which contained a shot of her and her parents with her brother.
“That’s my brother Steeb…I mean Steve.”
“Steeb?” Mary looked up.
“When I was a little girl I couldn’t pronounce his name properly.” Fliss explained “I called him Steeb, or Steeby…it just kinda stuck.”
Mary gave a snort of laughter as she placed the frame down and Fliss waited until she finished looking around before she headed for the door. They made their way back down the stairs and outside, where Frank was looking at something on his phone. He looked up at them as they walked back through the bi-folding doors.
“Did you say thanks?”
“She did.” Fliss nodded.
“Good.” Frank nodded. He took a sigh and looked at Fliss “I don’t wanna rush out but it is getting kinda late and someone will be a crank if they don’t get to bed soon.”
“Yeah he’s always grumpy if he doesn’t get enough sleep.” Mary quipped and Frank shook his head with a huff of laughter as Fliss giggled.
They all made their way inside and Fliss retrieved the wrapped up fish scraps for Fred which Frank took, his fingers gently brushing against hers which again sparked that damned fire in his belly. What the fuck was wrong with him?
Fliss merely smiled at the contact and turned to Mary “So remember, no being a pain in the bum about school or…”
“Yeah yeah I know…” she shrugged.
“Something tells me she isn’t gonna pay a blind bit of notice.” Fliss said, watching as she bounded to the truck.
“Nope.” Frank agreed, shaking his head. “Thanks for dinner Fliss, it was great.”
“Not a problem, if you’re happy to play hunter gatherer I’m always happy to cook.”
“I’ll hold you to that.” he smiled at her, and after a seconds hesitation he leaned down and pecked her on the cheek. “See you Saturday.”
She smiled and watched him head down to his truck where he paused and looked back at her, giving her another smile which spread across his handsome face and Fliss felt the butterflies in her stomach stirring in the way they always seemed to do whenever he looked at her. Tossing him a wave she watched them go before she shut the door and leaned against it, taking a deep breath.
“Stop chasing rainbows Lissy…” she muttered to herself, before she headed for a glass of wine and her latest book before retreating outside for the rest of her evening.

Surprisingly Mary kept most of her vitriol about going to school at bay, something Frank knew was down to the promise of visiting the yard. There was the odd grumble, which he shut down fairly easily. He had no illusions about the fact it would no doubt start in earnest on Sunday but for now he was simply happy to have a reprieve from the subject she had been complaining about for the past few weeks.
Seeing as she kept up her side of the bargain, he kept his. Fliss was more than happy to see them, and if he was completely honest, Frank was happy to see her as well. They talked to each other by text every single night now, it had just become a habit more than anything. And a habit he was happy to indulge.
They arrived at the yard a little after 5pm and Fliss was already on board a large, black horse with 4 white socks and a white blaze. She waved in acknowledgement but as they made their way to the paddock to watch, the horse gave a sudden sharp kick with its back left before stopping dead and launching its ass into the air. For a moment he thought Fliss was going to come unseated but she merely smirked and sat back, giving the horse a quick kick on. It moved a few steps and repeated the move.
"Give up you little shit..." he heard Fliss mumble and he bit back a snort as there was nothing little about the brute she was on.
She kicked again, but this time nothing, and the horse threw both its front legs up in a rear. Frank swallowed, as Fliss stood up in her stirrups throwing her reins forward before the animal landed down and she gave it a sharp tap with her stick. At that it moved forward a few steps and Fliss gently encouraged it to continue with a little squeeze of her legs.
"No worse than normal..." she said to Joanne who was grinning at the horse’s antics.
"He’s an ass..." Joanne laughed "you would think he'd learn he never gets away with it..."
"That's...that's normal?" Frank sputtered out and Fliss who had just struck the horse up into trot laughed.
"Yip" she called out, moving the horse on down the long side of the arena "He likes to fart about does Bronson"
Fliss warmed the horse in and then gestured to Mary to come into the paddock. She climbed the fence and sprinted over to where Joanne was.
“Ok so Joanne is now going to put out some poles…see.” Fliss looked down at her from her vantage point aboard the tall, black gelding. “The ones before and after the jump wings are take-off and landing poles. They are to help him and me figure out where he needs to be taking off and landing.”
Mary nodded eagerly
“Not all horses need them, but Bronson is still learning so it helps him to understand.”
Frank simply stood watching as Joanne directed Mary to help her set out the lightweight, brightly coloured pole before Joanne looked at Fliss and asked her something. Fliss nodded and Joanne set up a small cross-pole. Fliss circled the horse and sent it at the fence, Bronson hardly leaving the ground the fence was that low.
“Stick it up a foot!” Fliss called as she circled.
The fence was put up and Frank noticed Mary was watching every movement with utter rapt attention. She tugged on Joanne’s sleeve who turned to her and she pointed at the jump and Joanne nodded. Fliss sailed the horse over the next one and it was put up again.
This practice continued until one time the horse slammed on at the fence and skidded to a halt. Fliss fell onto the horse’s neck and Frank felt his heart stop but she didn’t fall. Instead she shuffled back onto the saddle, turned him and sent him straight back at the jump. This time he didn’t stop.
“So do you know what happened there?” he heard Fliss ask. Mary shook her head. “So his striding was off. He was trying to rush and I asked him to sit up and pay attention, because of that he got confused so he wasn’t right to take off when I needed him to. That’s why he stopped.” “So he wasn’t being naughty?” Mary asked.
“Nope.” Fliss shook her head. “Genuine mistake. See he’s only five so he’s a baby really, not like Cap who could jump a course with his eyes closed.”
“Cap?” Frank looked at her, and she turned to him. “Seriously, you have a dog called Thor and a horse called Cap?”
Fliss grinned “His full name is Captain Chaos…he was already named that when I got him but it fits my Marvel obsession perfectly.”
He shook his head with a smile and watched as this time the jump was higher again. Joanne moved Mary to stand under it, to show her how high it was and Mary’s eyes grew wide and she looked at Frank. He gave her a thumbs up and she moved out of the way as Fliss brought Bronson down again. The horse took off but clipped the pole with his front legs, knocking it down.
“That was because he didn’t pick his feet up enough…” Fliss called as she circled back round, coming again. “He’ll do it this time, watch…”
And he did. Fliss repeated the jump 3 times and Frank couldn’t help but marvel at how in tune with the animal she was. It was like they were working as a unit, she made it look effortlessly graceful, her hands and legs moving in coordination as she folded with the horse, as if jumping over a meter off the floor on the back of a half-tonne animal was the most natural thing in the world to do. The mere thought of it scared the crap out of Frank.
After the third clear jump, Fliss nodded to Joanne and slowed the horse down, letting him stretch.
“Always end on a good note” she grinned at Mary as she patted the horse. Frank could see Mary was thinking something and with that she nodded to Mary and rode the horse over to Frank.
“She wants to sit on him…” She looked at Frank “Is that ok?”
Frank swallowed “Isn’t he a bit…big?” he asked.
“Yeah but he’ll behave now…he’s knackered…tired…” she corrected her English slang. “She can sit up here with me if you’re comfortable with it?”
Frank bit his lip. “Are you sure he will be ok?”
“Trust me Sailor, I wouldn’t let her up here if I wasn’t convinced I could keep her safe…” Fliss said, removing her hat. She passed it down to Mary “Put that on and I don’t EVER want to see you on a horse without one, ok…do as I say not as I do.”
“Frank says that to me all the time…” Mary took Fliss hat and clipped it on. It was a little big but would do the trick.
“Sound advice…” Fliss grinned. “You wanna lift her up?”
Frank nodded and scaled over the fence, lifting Mary easily by the waist. He passed her up and she swung one leg either side of the saddle and gave a gasp.
“I’m so high!”
“Yup!” Fliss grinned, shifting back so Mary could settle in front of her “Ok, hands on this strap…” she indicate to the leather line around the horses neck “I call this my Oh sh-I mean, Oh No Strap…” she said “If anything goes wrong I can grab it and hold on.”
“You can say the word…” Mary looked up at her “Frank does.”
“Stop tattle telling.” Frank sighed.
Fliss laughed and gently nudged the horse on and walked it around a few laps before changing direction and repeating. Frank spotted Joanne was putting the jump wings away so he went to help and the girl beamed at him as she directed him to where they were stored by the hay barn. By the time they had finished Fliss and Mary were stood by the gate.
“You ready to get down?” Frank asked. Mary nodded so he reached up and gently aided her off the horse before Fliss dismounted.
“Wanna lead him in?” she looked at Mary, taking the horse’s reins and moving them over his head. Mary nodded and Fliss let her lead, all the time remaining nearby. This time they didn’t head into the main barn they walked further round to a smaller private block of 4 stables.
“So these are mine.” Fliss said. “That’s Cap…” she pointed to a large black and white horse, “And this is Heidi…”
Frank stopped in front of the large chestnut mare who looked at him before snorting. He jumped back and Mary laughed as Joanne took Bronson off Mary and led him into one of the stables.
“Yeah she’s a bit particular…” Fliss teased “But she’s my pride and joy. Had her since I was 16.”
“Is she the one you did the Olympics on?”
“No.” Fliss said, “That wasn’t my horse. It was a sponsor’s. Heidi was my competition horse before I started training for the Olympics but I couldn’t part with her. I’ve had her since she was 4 and she’ll be 21 this year.”
“Do you still ride her?” Mary asked, reaching up to stroke the mare’s head.
“Yeah.” Fliss said “She can still jump and work…not as hard but it’s important to keep them going. She’s my baby…”
The mare leaned over to nuzzle at Fliss and almost as if he could sense it, Thor appeared and walked into the middle of them, sitting down, nudging Fliss with his nose.
“And you of course…” Fliss grinned, patting the dog.
They headed back out into the yard and Joanne took Mary to the feed room so she could help whilst Fliss carried the tack back to the room.
“Here…” Frank offered as she was juggling the saddle around so she could tap in the code. She handed it over with a smile before opening the door and directing him to the racks. “Thanks.”
“Least I can do.” Frank smiled, dusting his hands down on his jeans “Thanks for this.”
“For what?”
“Letting Mary come tonight.”
“It’s no problem, she’s never any trouble.”
“No, she just asks a lot of questions…” Frank snorted as they walked out to see Mary was now carrying buckets to the horses to feed them.
“I don’t mind. Questions are great, shows they care and want to learn…” Fliss spoke over her shoulder as she moved to take 3 buckets into the barn for her own horses.
“Still it takes a lot of patience.” Frank smiled.
Fliss scoffed “Mary is nothing, you ain’t met my brother’s kids.”
“I’d like to meet them.” Mary chipped up and Frank looked at her, holding his hands out in a ‘what?’ gesture.
“You want to meet other kids?” he looked at her “You spent half the last fortnight ranting about not wanting to go to school!”
Mary scowled in response, giving him a filthy look.
“You two really need to work on your communication.” Fliss looked between the pair of them as they stood facing off in the yard.
“We do communicate.” Mary shot back, and Fliss gave a hmmm as the girl continued “He just doesn’t listen.”
“Well I’ve decided to ignore dumb remarks.” Frank shot back, adjusting his shades
“Passive aggression is just childish, Frank.” Mary shrugged and he shook his head, looking at Fliss.
“I literally…” he trailed off with a sigh “See what I mean?”
Fliss chuckled as she watched Mary moving over to speak to Joanne about something. “She makes me laugh.”
“Glad she amuses you.” Frank arched an eyebrow.
“Well it’s funny watching you get out smarted by a 7 year old, what can I say?” Fliss smirked.
“You know I really wish I could deny that, but…” Frank sighed as he walked towards Mary, dropping a hand on her shoulder “Right, time to go short stack…”
“Oh, oh one more question?” Mary looked up at Fliss.
“Ask and walk…” Frank instructed her, giving her a gentle push “What do you say to Joanne?”
“Thank you!” Mary looked at her.
“Any time kid!” Joanne said as the 3 of them made their way to the parking lot.
“So what was the question?” Fliss said as they walked.
“Oh, right so I was watching a video…and they were doing side saddle…have you ever done that?”
“Yeah.” Fliss nodded, stopping by Frank’s truck “I did it on Heidi when I was a lot younger. Didn’t like it though. I prefer a leg on each side…”
There was a pause as she realised what she had said and flashed bright red as Frank let out a huge bellow of a laugh, as she gave an adorably embarrassed groan and hid her face in her hands.
“Oh god…” she groaned out “That…I didn’t mean…”
“Course you didn’t” Frank teased between his laughs and she punched him lightly on the arm.
“I don’t…I don’t get it?” Mary asked, looking up.
“Tell you when you’re older.” Frank said, “In…” he pointed to the truck.
Mary gave an exasperated groan “You always say that. You know I AM Seven!”
“Going on seventy…” Frank grumbled as she opened the door to the truck. He looked at Fliss and pushed his glasses up on top of his head so could see her properly. “Thank you, again.”

“Don’t pretend you don’t love it Sailor!” She teased and he grinned.
“Well it kinda lightens up my day a little so…”
He trailed off and looked at her, and she blushed a little, tucking a stray strand of her auburn hair behind her ear. He couldn’t help but feel a little pleased at her bashful reaction. “Anyway I better…”
“Yeah, sure…” she nodded, “I’ll catch you later.”
“Yeah, you will.” he said “I’ll probably fire out an SOS tomorrow night when she’s kicking off about school.”
“Well you know where I am.” Fliss said, genuinely “And I mean that. If you wanna talk or anything just…”
“I will, thanks Lissy.”
There was a moment’s pause and Fliss could tell Frank was inwardly cursing himself for the slip of his tongue, using the nickname her dad had for her. But instead of correcting him she simply smiled, because, if she was honest, she kinda liked hearing it from him.
“Anytime, have a good evening.”
“You too.”
He climbed into his truck and watched as she headed back to the yard, looking back once with a smile.
“Roberta says you and Fliss would make great babies.” Mary said and Frank jolted slightly and looked at her.
“What?” he spluttered “Why would…”
“Good genes she says.” Mary shrugged and sat back in the seat.
“Roberta needs to shut up.” Frank shook his head as he put the truck into gear “Jesus Christ.”

COVID Vaccine Mandates Strongly Opposed in Europe, US as Failures Increase Analysis by

Since coronavirus pandemic lockdowns were implemented by many governments in 2020, people around the world have held largely peaceful protests against unprecedented social distancing restrictions that are devastating global economies and ruining people's lives.1,2,3,4
Now, faced with being ordered to obey new laws that require them to be injected with COVID-19 vaccines in order to enter public spaces or hold a job, on July 24, 2021 — World Freedom Day — hundreds of thousands of people of all ages took to the streets in Australia, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Greece and Germany to publicly challenge oppressive public health laws.5,6
The messages on the signs they held were diverse but they were united in pushing back against government overreach.
The brave determination of people, in democracies around the world who are publicly defending civil liberties — freedom of thought, speech, conscience and assembly — and the human right to informed consent to medical risk taking, demonstrates that the spirit of freedom lives in the hearts and minds of people everywhere. Both those who gather in the public squares of cities big and small and those who are watching are inspired by this commitment to defending liberty.
In the United States, no large demonstrations have been held yet, but polls reveal the nation is sharply divided about COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
A Politico/Harvard poll taken in late June 2021 found that Americans were evenly split on whether children should be required to get the COVID-19 vaccine to go to school and more than half of employed Americans are against COVID-19 vaccine requirements for holding a job, while almost 70 percent of Americans oppose being required to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination to enter a store or business.7
A recent CS Mott Children's Hospital poll found that more than half of parents in the U.S. with children between the ages of three and 11 say it is unlikely they will give their children the COVID-19 vaccine.8
Australia: 'The lockdown Is Killing Us, Not COVID'
With a population of 25 million people, Australians have been subjected to repeated strict lockdowns over the past 18 months and the government's "stay at home" lockdown in early July 2021 was imposed on New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, where more than half the country's population lives. The 30-day rigid social distancing restrictions were enacted after 176 new daily infections were registered in the whole country.9
In response, thousands of Australians gathered in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane on July 24 to protest the lockdown.
Social distancing restrictions that have been imposed include compulsory masking in all indoor non-personal residence settings; most schools closed; restrictions on how far people can travel from their homes; no going to work except for designated "essential" employees (who must be tested every three days); exercising and gathering outside only in groups of two; shopping only for essential items; attendance at funerals limited to 10 people but weddings are banned, and other limits on person-to-person social interaction.
In what the U.K. newspaper Daily Mail described as "frenzied crowds" coming together on July 24, there were estimates that as many as 10,000 protesters marched from Victoria Park to Town Hall in the central business district.
Carrying signs calling for "freedom" and "the truth" and "I don't consent" and "Wake up Australia!" and "We are your employers, we are not your slaves" and "unmasked, untested, unvaxxed, unafraid" and "I am not a biohazard" and "Our kids are not your guinea pigs" and "No false tests, no false cases, no lockdowns," one protester said, "We don't give a f*** mate, this lockdown is killing us." Another agreed: "I'm against lockdowns, they're killing my business."
Dozens of protesters climbed onto the roofs of a train station and Woolworths store as the crowd gathered around Town Hall singing the Australian national anthem. One observer said on social media, "Protest stretches right down Broadway! Absolutely massive turnout."
The Sydney protest was mostly peaceful but when mounted police told the demonstrators to disperse or they would be pepper sprayed, some broke through a police barrier and threw plastic bottles and plants at officers. The New South Wales Police Minister confirmed 57 people were arrested and charged and a "strike force has been established to investigate who was in attendance."10
On July 28, the Australian Prime Minister called in military personnel to help enforce social distancing restrictions in Sydney and extended the lockdown for another month after 239 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in the city of five million people within a 24-hour period. Residents will be forced to wear a mask outside their homes and must stay within 3 miles of their homes, only going out for "essential" activities like food shopping.11
On July 30, the Australian government used helicopters and the Army to help police enforce its 'Zero Covid' lockdown in Sydney and issue $500 fines for failure to mask.12 The BBC reported that Australian Defense Force soldiers will begin conducting unarmed patrols of the streets this week.13
According to media reports, sirens could be heard throughout the city and helicopters blared messages that 'this is public health order — do not break rules — you will be found and fined.'
Road blocks were set up in a military show of force in response to the public demonstrations earlier in the week, although soldiers are under police command. Starting this week, military personnel will accompany police going door to door to ensure that people who have tested positive for COVID-19 are isolating.14
Reuters reports that the Australian COVID-19 vaccination rate for adults stands at 18 percent and the Prime Minister has said 80 percent of adults must get vaccinated before the border, which has been sealed since the pandemic began, will be re-opened.15
Britain: 'No Forced Testing, No Forced Vaccines'
In May 2021, a 12 mile procession of tens of thousands of people ended at Parliament Square in a protest against continuing lockdowns and vaccine passports as a condition of accessing public venues.16
On July 19, the British government lifted the COVID-19 lockdown that had been in place for over a year, eliminating masking requirements, work from home, and limits on numbers of people who can gather together, which allowed for the full opening of restaurants and other public venues without social distancing restrictions.17
Just five days after the lockdown restrictions were lifted, thousands of people made their way to Trafalgar Square on July 24 to signal their opposition to potential future lockdowns, as well as to protest against the showing of COVID-19 vaccine passports as a condition of entering public spaces.18
There were banners draped in front of the speaker podium saying, "the public demands live debate" and "Science is not science without discussion" and demonstrators held signs that said "No forced testing, no forced vaccines" and "We are the lions in a world of sheep" and "If you tolerate this, your children will be next."19
Toward the end of the July 24 demonstration, the huge gathering in Trafalgar Square in unison sang, "You'll Never Walk Alone:"
When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high, And don't be afraid of the dark. At the end of a storm is a golden sky And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain, Though your dreams be tossed and blown. Walk on, Walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone, You'll never walk alone.
The United Kingdom, which has a population of 57 million, ranks in the top 20 most COVID vaccinated nations, with an adult vaccination rate of over 57 percent.20
France: 'My Body Is Mine' and 'It Is My Choice'
Paris, France and the cities of Marseille, Montpelier, Nantes and Toulouse saw tens of thousands of people take to the streets on World Freedom Day to protest against a proposed law that would require all health care workers to get COVID-19 vaccinations or lose their jobs.
People will be barred from entering restaurants or other public venues, effectively preventing them from participating in public life unless they have a health pass showing proof of COVID-19 vaccination, recovery from the disease or a recent negative COVID-19 test.
A care assistant at a Strasbourg nursing home expressed her disgust with the proposed law, saying it is "the blackmail of caregivers who were at the fronts line during the first wave and who are now threatened with "no more pay" and even being fired."21
A huge crowd of 160,000 people or more, many chanting "freedom, freedom" and carrying signs saying "stop the dictatorship" and "Big Pharma shackles freedom" and "no to the pass of shame" and "vaccines: fake freedom" and "don't touch our children" were met by police deploying tear gas and a water cannon used against some of them.22
Reuters reported that scuffles broke out at the Champs-Elysees and the Gare Saint-Lazare railway station.23 The demonstrators met at the Bastille plaza and marched through eastern Paris and also gathered at Place Trocadero near the Eiffel Tower to protest the required carrying of a "health pass."24
Just two days after witnessing several hundred thousand people voicing their opposition to the proposed new public health law, on July 26, the French Parliament voted to pass the law that will take effect this week.25,26
Five days later, on July 31, several hundred thousand French citizens of all ages again flooded into the streets of Paris with signs saying "We are not guinea pigs" and "It is our choice" and "My body is mine" and "Health terror — I will not submit" and "the 4th wave is us" in opposition to the new COVID-19 vaccine and vaccine passport.27
According to media reports, four marches dovetailed into the Place de la Bastille, with health care workers in white coats leading some of them, and were met by waiting squads of gendarmes and CRS riot police with water cannons. Demonstrators also gathered at the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Elysees and at the Villiers metro station in northwest Paris.
Reportedly, about 150 other protest events also took place in cities around France, which has a population of about 67 million and an estimated COVID vaccination rate of about 47.5 percent28 or more.
Italy: 'Enough Dictatorship: No Green Passes'
Thousands of people gathered in Rome, Genova, Milan, Naples, Turin and scores of other cities in Italy on July 24 to voice their opposition to the government's imposition of social distancing and COVID-19 vaccine requirements on citizens, including a requirement to carry the "Green Pass," which is an extension of the European Union's digital COVID certificate.29
The Green Pass will be required to enter cinemas, museums, indoor swimming pools, sports stadiums or eat indoors at restaurants, proving that a person has been vaccinated, has had a recent negative COVID-19 test or has recovered from the coronavirus infection.30
Chanting and carrying signs that said "Freedom" and "No Green Pass" and "Down with the dictatorship" and "Better to die free than live like slaves" and "against vaccination obligations" and "government does terrorism" and "shame-shame,"31,32 reportedly about 80 cities in Italy saw demonstrations on World Freedom Day.
These included an estimated nine thousand people in Milan, who marched in procession to the Piazza Duomo, the Galleria Vittoria Emanuele and to the Piazza Scala in front of the Town Hall. One banner said "Big Pharma out of the state. No to multinationals."
About five thousand people gathered in Piazza Castello in Turin with signs that said "We want to have the freedom to choose – the freedom to go wherever we want without being tied to a sheet."
In Rome, where there have been anti-lockdown demonstrations over the past year to protest then closure of cafes, bars and restaurants,33 an estimated two thousand demonstrated and the police intervened to disperse the crowd with armored vehicles.34 Italy has a population of about 60 million people, with nearly 52 percent vaccinated for COVID-19.35
Greece: 'Hands Off Our Children'
Thousands of people gathered in Omonia Square in the center of Athens on July 24 to express their opposition to the government's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. They carried signs saying "No mandatory vaccinations" and "No blackmail to dismiss" and "No separation of Greeks" and "hands off our children."
The leader of the anti-COVID vaccine movement in Greece, cardiologist Faidon Vovolis, MD addressed the huge crowd, which, according to Athens News, included "not only anti-vaccination activists, but also food and tourism entrepreneurs, clergy, citizens disaffected by the overall government leadership over the pandemic, and vaccinated citizens who view recent government measures as anti-democractic."36
Greek police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the demonstrators, who had rallied outside the Parliament building to protest COVID-19 vaccine requirements for workers, such as health care workers. Reuters said that about 45 percent of Greece's 11 million population is already vaccinated.37
Germany: 'For Peace, Freedom, Truth'
Berlin has been the site of several large demonstrations against lockdowns and COVID vaccine passports over the past year.38 On Aug. 1, 2021, tens of thousands of citizens marched in the streets of Berlin to protest lockdowns that have restricted dining indoors at restaurants or staying in a hotel and requirements to provide proof of COVID vaccination, defying a ban by German lower and upper administrative courts on public demonstrations.39
Berlin's administrative court had refused to authorize 13 demonstrations, some of which had been organized by the Querdenker (Lateral thinker) anti-lockdown movement.40
Berlin's police department deployed more than 2,000 officers armed with batons, pepper spray and water cannon as the crowds made their way from Berlin's Charlottenburg neighborhood, past the Tiergarten park and on to the Brandenberg Gate.
Reportedly, police in heavily armed vans dragged protesters across roads and into the vans with marchers shouting for freedom and the lifting of mandatory masking and travel bans. Protesters continued to march in the evening through the city streets and 600 people were arrested.41 Germany has a population of 83 million and 52 percent have been fully vaccinated.42
Human Rights Watch: COVID-19 Triggers Wave of Free Speech Abuse
On Feb. 11, 2021, Human Rights Watch published a report called for an end to excessive restrictions on free speech and peaceful demonstration where people are criticizing COVID-19 lockdowns, mandatory masking and other social distancing regulations that restrict civil liberties. The human rights organization said:43
"At least 83 governments worldwide have used the Covid-19 pandemic to justify violating the exercise of free speech and peaceful assembly … Authorities have attacked, detained, prosecuted, and in some cases killed critics, broken up peaceful protests, closed media outlets, and enacted vague laws criminalizing speech that they claim threatens public health.
The victims include journalists, activists, healthcare workers, political opposition groups, and others who have criticized government responses to the coronavirus … Governments and other state authorities should immediately end excessive restrictions on free speech in the name of preventing the spread of Covid-19."
Decentralized Government in US Makes a National COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate More Difficult
Unlike centralized governments in Europe and many other parts of the world, the founders of the United States of America ensured in the U.S. Constitution that this country would operate with lawmaking power shared between national, state and local governments.44
The fact that lawmaking power in the U.S. does not solely reside with the federal government, which is composed of the legislative (U.S. Congress), Executive (President/federal agencies) and Judicial (federal courts) branches, so far has protected the U.S. population from being subjected to the same kinds of uniform lockdown restrictions and now, the same kinds of COVID-19 vaccine mandates that are being implemented in European Union countries and other nations with centralized federal governments.
Since most public health laws in the U.S. fall under the legal jurisdiction of states, if a resident does not like the lockdown, masking, social distancing or COVID-19 vaccine mandates in the state they are living in, they simply can move to a different state that does not have the same kind of oppressive public health laws.
This is one reason why, although there have been smaller anti-lockdown and anti-COVID-19 vaccine mandate demonstrations in the U.S. over the past 15 months, some of them protesting COVID-19 vaccine requirements for health care workers,45 so far there have not been massive national demonstrations in the U.S. like those taking place in Europe and other parts of the world.
U.S. Government Pushes for an 85 Percent COVID-19 Vaccination Rate
As of July 28, about 60 percent of the U.S. population of 332 million people age 12 and older had received at least one dose of COVID vaccine and reportedly 50 percent, or about 165 million Americans, are "fully" vaccinated.46 As the third largest country in the world, the U.S. has a high COVID-19 vaccination rate compared to other countries, with only 25 countries recording a higher vaccination rate than the U.S.47
According to Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center, the country with the largest population in the world at 1.5 billion people — China — has a 16 percent COVID vaccination rate; the country with the second largest population in the world at 1.4 billion people — India — has a 7.4 percent COVID vaccination rate; and Russia, with a population of 146 million people, has a 17 COVID vaccination rate.48
However, U.S. government officials are pushing for an 85 percent COVID vaccination rate in the U.S.,49 even as a former FDA commissioner says that a combination of natural acquired immunity and vaccine acquired immunity is likely rapidly achieving an 85 percent herd immunity rate with the Delta variant in the U.S. population.50
Half to Two-Thirds of Americans Oppose Punitive COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates as Companies Begin to Mandate
Even though polls show that one-half to two-thirds of Americans oppose COVID-19 vaccine mandates, depending upon the setting,51 on July 29, the President announced that all federal workers and contractors must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or mask and social distance at all times and get constantly tested.52
The federal government also is urging corporations, local and state government agencies, medical facilities and other institutions to make vaccination a condition of employment.
Some companies, like Google, Facebook, Morgan Stanley, Ascension Health, The Washington Post, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lyft and Uber, Walmart and Disney have already mandated employees to get COVID-19 shots to continuing working for the companies.53,54 On July 30, Broadway theaters announced that all members of the audience will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and must keep a mask on at all times except when eating or drinking.55
Opposition Grows as CDC Admits Fully Vaccinated Persons Can Get and Efficiently Transmit COVID-19
After lifting national masking recommendations for COVID vaccinated persons in May 2021 with the assurance that the vaccine was effective in preventing symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection,56 on July 27, CDC officials abruptly reversed course and said that Americans, whether vaccinated or not, should wear a mask indoors outside their homes in certain places.57,58
They said they based that policy change on new information that the COVID-19 vaccines do not reliably prevent infection and transmission of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 and that the viral load in vaccinated persons who get infected is as high as the viral load in unvaccinated persons who get infected.59,60
CDC officials said the new federal indoor masking policy especially applies to adults in "high risk" areas where there are more people being infected with the Delta variant. The masking directive also applies to all unvaccinated children over age two, as well as vaccinated children over age 12 attending school, and additionally includes all teachers, school staff and visitors to schools whether vaccinated or not.61
Reuters reported on July 24 that vaccinated people made up 75 percent of recent COVID-19 cases identified in Singapore, but vaccinated cases were associated with mild symptoms:
"Of Singapore's 1,096 locally transmitted infections in the last 28 days, 484 or about 44 percent were in fully vaccinated people, while 30 percent were partially vaccinated and just over 25 percent were unvaccinated."62
The percentage ratio of infected vaccinated to infected unvaccinated persons in Singapore matches that of a recent SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in Massachusetts. On July 30, Associated Press reported that information in CDC documents revealed that 75 percent of the Provincetown outbreak occurred among fully vaccinated individuals.
About 80 percent of them experienced COVID-19 symptoms, with the most common being cough, headache, sore throat, muscle aches and fever.63
U.S. States Push Back Against COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates
Over the past year, Americans have been taking action at the state and local level to block COVID-19 vaccine mandates. A number of states have passed laws that restrict COVID-19 vaccine mandates and "vaccine passports" that bar people from entering public spaces.
Among the states that have passed laws prohibiting COVID-19 vaccine passports or COVID-19 vaccine mandates in some way are Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.64,65,66
On July 29, the Governor of Texas signed an executive order prohibiting state government agencies from mandating COVID-19 vaccine being distributed under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) and banning public or private entities that receive state funds from denying entry to those who are not vaccinated and, additionally, banning companies, state and local agencies — including school districts — from requiring mask wearing.
He said that Texans, "have the individual right and responsibility to decide for themselves and their children whether they will wear masks, open their businesses, and engage in leisure activities."67
Governors of several other states also have issued executive orders prohibiting COVID-19 vaccine mandates and some local and state governments have prohibited mask mandates.68,69 But some city and state governments, like New York City and California, have created legal requirements that force state employees to get vaccinated as a condition of keeping their jobs.70
On July 26, the nation's largest healthcare worker union, United Healthcare Workers, demonstrated in New York City against employee COVID-19 vaccine mandates.71 So far, the COVID-19 vaccine mandate as a condition of employment is also opposed by the American Postal Workers Union,72 Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, and United Auto Workers.73
It's Up to You to Act Now
With military soldiers patrolling the streets in Sydney, Australia and police with water cannons and tear gas facing tens of thousands of people protesting against vaccine passports and COVID-19 vaccine mandates in the streets of London, Paris, Rome, Athens and many other cities in Europe, there should be no doubt where the enforcement of mandatory vaccination policies are headed in the U.S. if Americans fail to proactively take action now.
There is no question that we are dealing with a global assault on civil liberties and human rights when public discussion and debate about government policy is censored74,75 and peaceful dissent is considered a crime. Public health laws that respect civil liberties and the informed consent ethic can only be secured if the lawmakers we elect value civil liberties and defend informed consent rights. Become fully informed about who you are voting for and never miss an opportunity to vote.

We have publicly defended the ethical principle of informed consent to medical risk taking and other human rights that include freedom of thought, speech and conscience.

Have a conversation with them now about why you believe it is important to protect civil liberties and vaccine informed consent rights in public health laws. It is merely a happy happy happy coincidence, but don’t take that to mean that they don’t have my full-throated support and admiration.
Since you kids are on tumblr, I’m guessing a lot of you already know that The Satanic Temple (TST) is not, in fact, a group of people who worship Satan. For those of you who might (understandably) have TST confused with an an actual Satan-worshipping entity, rest assured - supporting TST requires no actual Satan worship - or anything worship, it’s a “non-theistic religion.”
So, you might be wondering, what’s the point of a purported Satanic church that explicitly does not believe in, nor worship, Satan?
Great rhetorical question! Thank you for the invitation to geek out! In this essay I will explain why The Satanic Temple is an incredibly clever maneuver to protect the individual rights and liberties of people in the United States of America, and why you should all, regardless of religious belief, stan them. I am sorry! This is going to be a long one! I’m going to use a page break!
(Apologies if anything I say here is really basic obvious stuff that you already know. I will probably cover some familiar ground, but I didn’t get taught about any of this in high school beyond a few throwaway paragraphs in a textbook, so I’m writing with an audience of ‘me in high school’ in mind.)
As you know, the founding fathers did some pretty wild shit when they decided on what the United States of America was going to look like, and among the wildest was the decision that America would not have a state religion. I cannot express to you guys how significant this decision was in shaping American culture... soooo I won’t try because it’s beside the point and this is already going to be way too long. All you really need to take away is the following:
The U.S. constitution provides both that religion and government are to be kept separate, and that the free exercise of religion is a fundamental individual right, and those portions of the constitution have pissed a lot of people off over the last 244 years.
So there’s actually three parts of the bill of rights that are in play here. In the First Amendment, we have the Establishment Clause, and the Free Exercise Clause:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion [The Establishment Clause], or prohibiting the free exercise thereof [The Free Exercise Clause]; or abridging the freedom of speech [...]”
These clauses were the only part of the Constitution that touched on religion until the 14th amendment was ratified in 1868. For those of you who are curious about the timing of a new amendment in 1869 and are as bad with significant dates as I am, the Civil War ended in 1865, and, as such, it’s worth noting that the purpose of the 14th Amendment was to guarantee equal civil and legal rights to Black people. I am not the first person to note that uh, we are clearly still working on that.
Anyway, for our purposes, the pertinent part of the 14th amendment is the Equal Protection Clause:
“No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
Okay, very broadly, here’s what each clause actually does:
The Establishment Clause says that the US government cannot sponsor any religion, or involve itself in religion to the benefit of one religion over another.
The Free Exercise clause says that the US government cannot stop someone from holding a religious belief (or force them to adhere to another religious belief)
The Equal Protection Clause prohibits discrimination on the basis of religious belief
These all look pretty great on paper, but in practice, enforcing them has been wildly hit or miss. I’m going to discuss why, so I’ll say up front that none of this should not be construed as an attack on Christianity. Religious faith is intensely personal, and I want to emphasize that I am in no way advocating for adherents to the Christian faith to be unable to practice that faith. I am a sincere advocate for everyone to be able to freely practice their own religious beliefs (or lack thereof), and that’s exactly what’s at issue here - when one religion is positioned above all others, anyone who does not believe in that particular religion is impacted detrimentally.
So with that caveat in place, it’s important to recognize the following: the United States is, and has always been, a majority Christian nation. 65% of Americans identified as Christian in 2019, which is a historic low. Even ten years back, it was closer to 85%. In accordance with the demographics of the US, Christianity is, if anything, over-represented in US government. 85.4% of US congressmen identify as Christian. 82 out of the 100 senators identify as Christian (I’m not counting members of congress or the senate who identify as members of the Church of Latter Day Saints in those numbers). Furthermore, every single president has identified themselves as Christian - the spiciest America has gotten in re: the religious beliefs of a POTUS was JFK, who was, you know, Catholic.
This is important, because it directly impacts how we interpret what “separation of church and state,” “free exercise of religion,” and “nondiscrimination on the basis of faith” actually mean. When a country is predominantly comprised of people who share the same faith, that faith becomes part of the shared cultural concept of national identity: even though the US is, in practice, relatively diverse in terms of ethnicities and religious faiths (as far as countries go), if you ask someone on the street to imagine an American, they are probably going to imagine a white dude who loves Flag and also Jesus. That national identity is reflected in the country’s chosen representatives, and in return, in the legislation passed by those representatives and the behavior expressly condoned by the government as a whole. The end result of all of this is that in the United States of America, Christianity and the exercise of government frequently intersect.
Take the late forties and early fifties. WWII is over, and two global superpowers have emerged that are at diametrical positions; there’s our old capitalist pal the US in one corner, and in the other, the godless, socialist menace of the USSR. I’m being silly and hyperbolic here, but not about the godless bit: the USSR was officially an athiest state, and the government forcibly converted its citizens to atheism. So, the US squints at this and swings hard in the opposite direction; this is a Christian nation, we are sticking “under god” in the pledge of allegiance, we are putting Ten Commandment sculptures in front of our courthouses, we are mandating prayer in school, and if you have an issue with any of that, you are not a patriotic American.
Some of that stuff from the 50s still exists today (“under god” is still kicking around), but a lot more of it is essentially outlawed thanks to the branch of government that I haven’t mentioned yet, the federal judiciary. How this played out was essentially that someone would be impacted by state-sponsored Christianity, they would sue, and their case would eventually be appealed up to the level of the Supreme Court, who would look at the Constitution, admit that it’s pretty unequivocal about the whole separation of church and state thing, and bar the state sponsored religious practice at issue, or at the very least ensure that the state was not sponsoring one faith to the exclusion of others. So, to return to our ten commandments in front of the courthouse or nativity scene outside of a government building; (I’m really simplifying things here but this is the gist) the court has repeatedly decided, those are fine, as long as you give fair play to any other religion that wants to erect their own religious display there too. It’s either that all religions have an equal opportunity to be represented, or no religion does.
I know, this is supposed to be about why The Satanic Temple is cool. We’re getting there.
Let’s jump ahead to the early 2000s. Bush Jr. is president, thanks in no small part to massive evangelical Christian support, and those evangelical Christians have some demands: they want schools to teach creationism, they’re gunning directly for reproductive rights, and they have had enough of this whole gay nonsense. A lot of legislation gets passed during the Bush era that gives the Evangelical base what they want, and among those big evangelical wins was on teaching intelligent design in schools. This didn’t happen everywhere, but some states basically said that intelligent design could be taught alongside evolution in public school science classes, and that evolution and intelligent design had to be portayed as equally valid theories.
Obviously, a lot people were upset about this, because... well, it’s science class. Among the people who thought this whole thing was bullshit was a guy named Bobby Henderson, who wrote an open letter to the Kansas Board of Education in 2005. Referencing the Supreme Court decisions I discussed earlier (either all religious beliefs get equal play or none of them do), Bobby demanded that along with evolution and intelligent design, Kansas schools devote equal time to teaching the creation story of his religious faith, and if any of this is sounding familiar, that’s because Bobby described his religious faith as “Flying Spaghetti Monsterism.”
The memetic potential of this argument was basically designed for the internet era, and it wasn’t too long before purported adherents to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster was filing lawsuits that challenged all sorts of government practices that obviously skewed Christian. They were making classic reductio ad absurdum arguments; if it was ridiculous that the government should promote the message of the Flying Spaghetti Monster in a given sphere, it was equally ridiculous that the government should promote the message of other religious faiths in that same sphere.
The whole pastafarian movement had one major weakness, however - it was expressly, deliberately silly. Nobody could mistake a Flying Spaghetti Monster argument to be made in good faith, and the courts used this to basically ignore FSM challenges that would otherwise be valid. Here’s what the Nebraska federal district court decided in the big Flying Spaghetti Monster case, Cavanaugh v. Bartlet:
“The Court finds that FSMism is not a ‘religion’ within the meaning of the relevant federal statutes and constitutional jurisprudence. It is, rather, a parody, intended to advance an argument about science, the evolution of life, and the place of religion in public education. Those are important issues, and FSMism contains a serious argument, but that does not mean that the trappings of the satire used to make that argument are entitled to protection as a ‘religion.’”
That’s the Pastafarian problem in a nutshell. They had great points, but they weren’t actually a religion, and that left the courts free to disregard their arguments by saying that they lacked standing. “Standing” is legalese for the concept of who is able to bring a lawsuit based on a particular act or law. This sounds esoteric, but it makes logical sense: If your neighbor gets hit by an ice cream truck, is injured, and is now hundreds of thousands of dollars in the hole for medical debt, he has standing to sue the ice cream truck driver. He suffered an injury that was caused by the ice cream truck driver, and the court has the ability to direct the ice cream truck driver to pay for his medical bills and pain and suffering etc. If you, on the other hand, decide to sue the ice cream truck driver because they ran over your neighbor, well, did you actually get injured? Would it being about any sort of justice if the ice cream truck driver had to pay you money? If the answer is no and you try to sue anyway, the court’s going to kick that lawsuit out.
Constitutional challenges often die because the person suing doesn’t have standing to bring the case. Remember how I mentioned earlier that “one nation under god” is still in the Pledge of Allegiance? A case about that actually got all the way to the Supreme Court, before it was tossed out for lack of standing - the problem was that a student’s father had brought the lawsuit, instead of the student herself. Likewise, the Flying Spaghetti Monster cases usually went nowhere because the courts would say “okay, you’re claiming that this law is trampling on your right to practice your chosen religion, but your religion is deliberately ludicrous. Your holy book was published in 2006 and heavily features a beer volcano. You don’t actually believe in any of this, so you haven’t actually suffered the harm that you’re claiming this legislation caused.”
So, uh, how the hell does an athiest challenge the constitutionality of laws like the FSM movement tried to without just getting tossed out for lack of sincerity?
Okay. Okay. We’re finally here. Let’s talk about The Satanic Temple.
In 2013, after witnessing how the FSM movement failed to accomplish meaningful change, Lucien Greaves realized that even though the basic concept of what FSM was trying to accomplish was solid, the issue was in its execution. If you wanted to challenge laws that unconstitutionally favored Christianity, you couldn’t be joking around about your fake religion; you had to play it absolutely straight.
What Greaves came up with is incredibly clever. He set about constructing a new religion for the purpose of using the FSM playbook without falling into the same judicial pitfalls. He made sure that the new religion would constitute an actual belief system in the eyes of the law, which involved identifying the mission and core articulable tenents of the religion. I’m quoting them both below because they’re cool as hell:
The Mission of The Satanic Temple
“The mission of The Satanic Temple is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense, oppose injustice, and undertake noble pursuits.
The Satanic Temple has publicly confronted hate groups, fought for the abolition of corporal punishment in public schools, applied for equal representation when religious installations are placed on public property, provided religious exemption and legal protection against laws that unscientifically restrict women's reproductive autonomy, exposed harmful pseudo-scientific practitioners in mental health care, organized clubs alongside other religious after-school clubs in schools besieged by proselytizing organizations, and engaged in other advocacy in accordance with our tenets.”
The Seven Tenets of The Satanic Temple
1. One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.
2. The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
3. One's body is inviolable, subject to one's own will alone.
4. The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.
5. Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.
6. People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
7. Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.
Tenets aside, though, this next bit is what just delights me to my core with how crafty it is: Instead of making up his own religious text and history, he went directly to the Bible and said (I’m paraphrasing) “the historical foundation of The Satanic Temple is the exact same as the historical foundation of Christianity. We share the same holy book, and our faiths are grounded in the same tradition. Here’s the only difference: We believe with all sincerity that the character in that book who said ‘hey, try the apple, the pursuit of knowledge is worth rebelling against authority for’ is actually the good guy in the story, and although we are not a theistic organization, it is our sincere religious belief to comport ourselves in the manner espoused by the literary character Satan.”
Holy shit, guys. Holy shit, that is smart. He set up his religion so that you couldn’t attack it for being fake without also attacking Christianity for being fake! Simultaneously, he designed a religion that would reliably produce the perfect reductio ad absurdum argument- you want to display your ten commandment statue on public land? Okay, chill, but per the Constitution, we get equal play, so if you want those ten commandments, you’d better be cool with them sitting right next to our 3000 lb bronze statue of children gazing adoringly up at Baphomet:
Oh, wait, you don’t want to have that statue on government property? Cool. Totally fine. Just take your ten commandments slabs away too, and we’ll call it a truce.
The Satanic Temple exists to protect individual constitutional rights. Regardless of your own religious sentiment, it’s hopefully easy enough to see how incredibly shitty it would be to have your elected government promote religious beliefs that you do not share, to have religious sentiments that you find abhorrent expressly condoned by the government, or to have your own rights of expression and against discrimination constrained by a government that expressly santions only the religious beliefs of the majority, in spite of the concepts expressed in the United States Constitution. The only way to challenge an unconstitutional law is to sue, and it takes a lot of time, effort, and most of all resources to see a constitutional lawsuit through. Organized religion and government entities have a much easier time defending those cases than an individual does in suing them; by supporting The Satanic Temple, you’re directly evening the odds.
P.S. I know I talk a big game about how cleverly The Satanic Temple was designed, but you know how you can tell that it’s actually brilliant? The IRS granted it tax exempt status as a religious entity in 2019. Yup. Even with the IRS directly under the thumb of Donald J. Trump, a man desperate to maintain evangelical support, the IRS finally had to concede that they could not find any reason why The Satanic Temple shouldn’t be treated the exact same way as any other church. Angry that a Satanic entity doesn’t have to pay taxes on its income? Well, buddy, get ready to learn what megachurches get away with.

Proud of You
Pairing: OT7 BTS x graduating reader PLATONIC! (also could be seen as 8th member)
Summary: Due to the coronavirus, your whole senior year has been destroyed, chewed, and spit out by the universe. You start to get depressed once your robes come, but the boys know just how to make you feel better.
Warnings: The reader kind of gets depressed, Americanized because American graduation and Korean graduation are a little different, like 2 swear words, but nothing else. Lots of fluff!
A/N: This is intended to be for high school seniors but words for college seniors as well, could be a stand alone read or a continuation of Real Family.
“(Y/N), your package came!"
I ignored Namjoon’s yell and cuddled back into the multitude of blankets that swaddled me in a large cacoon.
Quarantine was not faring well with me.
In retrospect, I had it a lot better than most people. I was surrounded by my seven brothers who I loved unconditionally and didn’t have any issues with food shortages or internet issues, but I wouldn’t be able to graduate. That was hard to come to terms with. After twelve long, hard years working at school, and only to be denied all of my senior privileges, seeing my friends, and the top of the cake, graduation. It honestly sucked. But, instead of facing my feelings, I’ve camped out in my bedroom listening to Lo-fi and pretending as if my mental health wasn’t suffering.
”(Y/N)!“ I groaned with protest, rolling out of bed with no care about my ragged appearance. My hair stuck up at odd angles, and my baggy t-shirt and sweatpants weren’t the most attractive outfit I’ve worn. I trudged towards Namjoons shouting voice, ignoring the flambergasted look Jin gave me, and Yoongi’s voice shouting at me to take a shower and that I smelled like Hoseoks dirty socks.
"Oh, you look…” I gave Namjoon an annoyed look,
“dead to the world? Depressed? Annoyed? Sad?” I finally looked down at the package, a medium-sized box shipped from the school.
I frowned, a sneaking suspicion about what it was creeping up on me. I picked up the box and carried it to the kitchen island, quickly grabbing a pair of scissors from the closest drawer and cutting open the top of the cardboard. My frown only grew as I spotted the robes and cap inside the box, the robe that I would never wear because my diploma was going to come shipped to me, like a useless piece of paper.
I ignored the crowd watching me from the sidelines and crawled back to my dark hole of depression, otherwise known as my room. Little did I know the boys were setting a plan into motion before I even shut my door.
Netflix seemed to be my only saving grace. My little kid floaties as I attempted not to drown in the big kid pool. I was just about to finish one of the most important cinematic moments in history, Jane giving birth in the tv show Jane the Virgin. But the show all of a sudden started to buffer, and soon a notification on my computer was telling me the wifi connection failed. Aggravated, I tried to re-type the password only for my computer to tell me it was wrong. I stomped to my door, ready to scream at Jungkook for messing with the wifi only to find the exact boy and Jimin standing in front of my door.
“Uh, hi?” The two looked very suspicious and both their hands were behind their back as if they were hiding something.
“Is something wrong?” Jungkook asked, trying to bite back a smile as if he knew he was messing with me. Before I could interrogate him Jimin was elbowing him in the ribs,
“don’t be a brat, Koo.” Jungkook grumbled, and suddenly Jimin was shoving a cardboard box into my arms, the same cardboard box with my graduation outfit.
“Wha-"
"You should try it on.” Jimin pushed, a gleaming look behind his eyes that told me he was planning something.
“Why-"
"If you don’t try it on and come show us, then we won’t tell you the new wifi password.” My jaw dropped as Jungkook let a sly smirk cross onto his face. Those sly dogs. I sent a harsh glare to the two of them,
“fine, but I’m choosing dinner tonight.” Jimin exchanged a glance with Jungkook then ruffled my poor excuse of hair, patting down some of the large knots.
“You drive a hard bargain, deal.” I couldn’t help but smile at their ridiculous antics but before Jimin could shove me back into my room Jungkook was adding,
“be sure to brush your hair though, you look like the walking dead."
The door shut before the hairbrush I threw could hit his head.

The body length mirror in front of me only made me more anxious and sad as I looked over my uniform. The robes weren’t exactly attractive, but they fit, and the sad memories of never being able to walk with my friends or give a speech, fully appreciate the process of graduation only soured my mood. I ran a hand through my freshly brushed hair, I styled it slightly in preparation of being included in a V-live or some other event that showed my face to the public. I wasn’t an idiot, the boys wanted me out of my room, and to look nice so I assumed they would show me off to Army to try and lift my spirits. I didn’t want to do this. A part of me wanted to crawl back into my bed and snuggle under my fluffy blankets, call Jin and tell him that I wasn’t feeling well. They might buy it if I lie and say I’m on my period. Even though I was close with the boys, that was the one thing that always freaked them out, and got them off my back. Just mention blood coming out of their younger sister’s vagina and you’re no longer being teased, a full proof plan. I sighed and leaned against the cool wood of my door, my hand hovering over the metal doorknob. Maybe this wouldn’t be such a bad idea, just smile and take a few pictures then you can go back to your room, yeah 30 minutes tops, then I’d be out of there.
With that final boost of confidence, I opened the door only to find Yoongi standing at the end of the hallway, dressed in the fancy blue sweater he only wore to important events.
"Is this a blue sweater event?” I questioned jokingly, but his gaze was still locked on my outfit, and once I got close enough he fiddled with the tassel on the top of my cap.
“I’m so proud of you.” I snorted at his cheesy words, raising an eyebrow,
“for what?” He shrugged as if it was no big deal and offered his arm out to me,
“for being you.”
Yoongi led me into the dark living room, and my eyes barely had a moment to adjust before the lights were blasted on. My own eyes winced at the onslaught of light, but once they adjusted my heart did cartwheels at the sight in front of me. Gold and silver balloons and streamers hung around the room, inflatable letters spelling out graduation hung at the front of the room where Namjoon stood in front of a pedestal, the other boys lined against either side, creating a clear pathway for me. They were all dressed in nice clothes and once I got close enough they each handed me a slip of paper, diploma, written in crayon or colored pencil highlighted at the top of each paper. A personal message below each of them. I couldn’t help but laugh at that, especially after seeing Hoseok misspell graduation in crayon and have to cross it out to rewrite it. Once I was finally in front of Namjoon, he looked at me with one of the proudest and genuine smiles I had ever seen.
“Wow, (y/n) looks so much better in her graduation robes then you did Jungkook,” Taehyung whispered cheekily and an embarrassingly loud laugh erupted from my chest at his words and the comedic look of betrayal that crossed Jungkooks face. Namjoon cleared his throat and then glared at the two before turning to face me,
“Dear class of 2020, It is my greatest honor to be your commencement speaker as you head off to do great things in your lives, as you face graduation day, ready to take on a life full of brand new colors, a palette of opportunities and-” Namjoon filtered off and loosed the bow tie around his shoulder before walking around the pedestal and standing in front of me. “(Y/N), I am so proud of you. I can only imagine how hard this must be for you, balancing all the things you do, from school, to work, living with us, I know we aren’t the easiest family-"
"Excuse you I’m fucking fantastic and (Y/N) appreciates me and our relationship,” Jin spoke up unashamedly, but a grin spread over his face and he was suddenly showing us two thumbs-ups which transferred into hearts.
“As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, we just want you to know that we’ve seen how hard you’ve worked and that we will always be here for you. Even after you get your diploma, and face other big events in your life.”
I couldn’t hold back, and my arms were instantly wrapping around Namjoon in a bone-crushing hug, tears forming in the corners of my eyes as Namjoon spoke,
“congratulations (y/n), you graduated."
I’ve been through a lot with the boys, a lot of good memories. From concerts to hangouts, to awards, that time Jin got his tonsils out and thought Namjoon was Britney Spears, but this by far was my favorite memory with them. Or at least a close tie to the Britney Spears moment. Before I could wipe away the tears forming in my eyes Hoseok popped a confetti launcher, the loud bang scaring me out of Namjoons arms as Hobi attacked me in a hug.
"Our strong girl graduated.” He wrapped his arms around me and jumped up and down excitedly, forcing my body to jump with him.
“Let her go Hyung, I want a hug too.” I jumped into Tae’s arms as soon as Hobi let go of me, and smiled while he gently wiped away the tears trailing down my face.
“You better be hungry (y/n), because I made every single dish you ever remotely mentioned you liked.” At the mention of food, I suddenly became aware of the onslaught of smells coming from the kitchen, sensations that made my stomach growl in hunger. Jimin pinched my cheek adoringly and I swatted his hand away,
“I know we said you could pick dinner, but Jin-Hyung really wanted to cook for you-” I cut him off and stood on my tippy toes to kiss his cheek,
“thank you Jimin, really."
"Don’t thank Jimin, this was all my idea!” Jungkook shouted from the other room while Jin smacked him for trying to get into the food without the rest of us.
“Excuse you! This was a joint effort, don’t try and get all the attention.” Yoongi joined in on the shouting while Namjoon sweated,
“if anything I should get extra credit for giving the speech-"
"You begged to do the speech!"
I chuckled while Tae wrapped an arm around my shoulder,
"Congratulations graduation girl, you deserve it.” Before I could thank him, shouting erupted from the kitchen, while Tae blanked in front of me.
“Shit, they got into the silly string.”
