An entire schedule change is hard for Raz to get used to. A lot of it involves just talking to different agents one-on-one while the Superstar Agents finish the reports of his mind. The only thing that makes him excited about missing his mentors was the fact that with how long the reports were taking, maybe his mind would be turned into a story in TPT.

There is… quite a bit he still doesn’t know about his own mind. Like… he knows he has lots of big parts in him, like his circus area. And his psychic area. What does his psychic area even look like? How is it going to translate to a page?

RRR

RRR all STARTED on one idea.

Of the scenes for each part... I'll state these things.

For Drowned Grulovia, Agent's scene that I REALLY wanted to write and build a story around was the scene between him and his Nona. How in the future, he was unsure if Nona would even be around to help him anymore. For Camp Whispering Rock, it was the Nightmare scene (which had to change so much from its original placement and meaning). For the Aquatodome, it was Zombie running away from the Aquatos. For the Memory Morgue, it was multiple memory vaults. I just wanted Hollis to know what Raz went through.

For the Nothing King, there was an original scene it was all written around that was scrapped because I and the original creator of the Nothing King agreed using the song from Centaurworld would be too jarring and readers would not like it. But NK's introduction was still written with the song in mind. Here's the original -

RRR Group Swap: Circus

"Dream Team"

Most likely Sasha and Milla take this after being assigned to it by Hollis. This is followed by Loboto running through the Circus, chased by Lili and Dogen. Zombie tries to go for Milla and Sasha for comfort and the two even carry him around for a bit... until Loboto, Lili and Dogen distract them long enough for Zombie to be snatched up. I do think that seeing this, Milla would be horrified and Loboto's valves for eyes would leak out water in response. ALSO, I believe that once Zombie Frazie and Zombie Dion are fought, Lili is up against them and I had a thought that they would try to grab at her and pull her apart similar to Zombie, only to immediately have their tar and plush bodies begin to burn. Dogen however would be a great MVP as he would explode the Aquatos to get their bodies back. Meanwhile Milla is great at getting them up, and Sasha can keep enemies off of their flank.

Junior Agents

Zombie this time goes to Adam for comfort. This comfort is short lived as the Zombies don't care too much about the Interns because Raz's mind sees them as equals to him. The only threat they detect is Hollis. Therefore Zombie is snatched. Which also makes Adam try to chase them up a pole. I feel like the fights between the Junior Agents and the Zombie Aquatos would be a different flavor of fun. Give them some thing more to work with.

Psychic Seven

This would probably be the blandest take? I don't have too many ideas for it. Other than Nona still having the flea jumping and trying to drag Ford around like that. The most that would probably get to them other than Zombie is... The Maligunona fight. Which is only one emotional moment but damn would it hit hard. Of course, Nona would be there, and... I guess Lucrecia would be the leader of the Psychic 7 in this area rather than Drowned Grulovia.

What was the inspiration behind the heart to heart between Norma and Oleander in Chapter 10 of Raz's Regretful Realm? You believe Norma's hostility to Raz was because she felt threatened by his presence at the Motherlobe in the game?

I'm a sucker for the Li-Po document and Campster. I love using them and their information to assist in fleshing out the different characters of Psychonauts. (i.e. making the Booles, Dooms, and Zanottos family friends)

Part of that is this tidbit about Morceau Oleander's backstory in the Li-Po document.

Now, I know this goes against canon, even with the first game, with Coach commenting: "[Bobby Zilch] reminds me of myself when I was his age;" if you show him the button to Sasha's lab. However, I do believe that Morceau Oleander pushing himself to the limit to try to impress his parents the best he can is something that would be a fantastic character core compared to what we know of other character's family lives.

Sasha abandoned his father after seeing something he was uncomfortable with, while Morceau dug his heels down and wanted to impress his father the best way possible. Furthermore, Morceau and Razputin have parallels with their lives that aren't really shown off. Sasha and Raz may have run away from their families, but that was because Raz wanted his family to embrace something they tried to bury. Morceau on the other hand, buried his own psychic powers and carried on with the family business in the Li-Po doc.

The top student aspect of Morceau linked him with Norma, and with Morceau already being a parallel to Raz, it was interesting to write him as the link between the two. Understanding them both, but also being his own character. He can see where both come from.

I also do believe that Norma felt slightly threatened by Razputin, as while Sasha is not implied to be her mentor (her mentor is Hollis, based on the scavenger hunt she gives Raz), for a long time the fandom thought he was. Having Norma fear that someone would do better than her is a very real experience a lot of people I interacted with have. (Believe me, being on the other end of "I'm glad if I lost to anyone, it was to you," is not the most comfortable feeling.) Norma really feels that way with me, only this time she has not yet lost to anyone. She's used to being the best. Top of her grade. For someone younger than her to be excelling... for someone who isn't even supposed to be on her level already trying to push past them all, makes Norma feel threatened. Raz's own father is already trying to recreate pyrokinesis and I don't doubt that when Norma asked Augustus about Raz, she got the ENTIRE spiel about how this man managed to break into his son's defensive mind without a PSI-Portal. Impressive and terrifying. Norma wants to be the best. Because if she's not the best... what is she?

That's why I have Norma make such a strange connection about Jackalope.

This right here? It's not supposed to be correct. Norma is so confident in her answer... but as the author I know she's incorrect. Jackalope isn't there to give tests, he's trying to defend Raz's brain the best way he can. To Jackalope, letting people see what damage Raz has gone through, makes him believe that Razputin will have people who understand and won't let Nothing King take over. Or even prevent Camper from going into Raz-Ent-Ment or Agent letting NK out.

One of the things I love the most about Raz's Regretful Realm is how it makes visitors in Raz's mind realize how badly they wronged him in the past. Can you think of anything that helps describe/demonstrate how much remorse they're struck with throughout the story?

If you really look for that, that is mostly in the Circus area. I really think a lot of the scenes can speak for themselves, but I'd like to highlight the scene where Dion and Frazie intertwine their fingers with Zombie's disembodied hands, seeing how small and young this constrict is.

If I were to say there was a group with little remorse, but actually sympathy, it'd be the Psychic Seven. Most of their remorse is already in Psychonauts 2 so they don't have many regrets with having Raz help them. They're more so worried about Agent’s lack of mental health breaks.

Now, if this were a DLC level for Psychonauts 2 or 3, I'd add the interactions to be like how the Agents talk to Raz in "Loboto's Labrynth," where you pick a character in the group you like and play as them. This may even change parts of dialogue and actions characters would have taken, which I feel with Memory Morgue, might give them less chances to feel remorse than in the story.

Camper - Warden's been great! He's been working with the censors to get everything sorted! Our mind's been getting cleaner!

Jackalope - He's changed a lot. He used to be a heavy censor, but now he's in a Raz shape? And he can say one syllable things. He even has nicknames he calls us. He calls me "Lope." He calls Camper either "Ghost" or "Camp." He calls Agent: "Gent." And Zombie has the nickname of "Bie."

Zombie: And... he makes sure none of us get close to NK. Especially me n Agent.

Agent - He's still recovering after becoming a tree.

Agent - ANYWAYS that's a great question to start us out. Agent Forsythe didn't want people coming into Raz's mind and... Well, no one wanted that at all. But we still need checking in.
