10 Disney hot takes/probably unpopular opinions

As a big Disney fan, I thought I'd make a post dedicated completely to things I hated/despised about Disney films I loved (or at least liked):

I wasn't a fan of "Dos Orguitas." I think it's because I just don't like slow songs. I also think it was the wrong song to send to the Oscars: "Surface Pressure," "What Else Can I Do," and "Waiting on a Miracle" were much better options.

2. I CANNOT STAND Flynn Rider. I made a post about the sympathetic thief/conman trope you see in films and how I'm tired of it, so I won't repeat myself. I'd have preferred Bastion (his original self) instead of the final product; Flynn comes off feeling like a father or big brother figure to Rapunzel rather than her love interest.

3. Anna and Kristoff were ruined as a couple by "Frozen 2." Kristoff is so obsessed with finding a way to propose to Anna while Anna ignores him and misunderstands him for much of the movie, that the proposal at the end of the film feels almost unearned.

4. "Mulan" needed more songs. I can't get more clear than that.

5. Gaston didn't need to die, and he kinda toed the line between evil and mean. He's a villain, but it's his arrogance that screws him over; if he was just vain, he'd be into Belle, but he probably wouldn't be as big of a threat. At worst, he'd be a recurring suitor for Belle that she kept having to turn away. He could've been a minor antagonist, but his determination to get what he believed belonged to him was what led to his downfall. Plus now that I think on it, couldn't he have just been imprisoned? I doubt he'd have too much sway after the events of the film.

6. The costumes for Big Hero 6 weren't as great as they could've been. While the colors and styles are different, the fabric/armor and headgear looks similar, bringing it to almost a uniform look with different colors rather than individual outfits. I discussed that in my rewrite.

7. "Raya and the Last Dragon" would've been my favorite Disney film it had been a musical, focused on one SEA country (or at least, several distinct ones rather than a mesh), and had a story that carried the morals/characters better. It has a great concept on paper, but my rewrite says it all.

8. Pocahontas had the best romantic life (and John Rolfe is better than John Smith).

9. Ariel's green dress is her best one.

10. Asha and (human) Star should've been a couple. One of my many frustrations with "Wish."

favorite thing about them: Her defiance of the rigid confines of the Academy, which is so strict about what is and isn't worthy of study, who is and isn't a heretic. Her desire to understand the primeval current and this wellspring of all sorcery and even life itself is so noble. But then all the nobility of that cause is dashed to pieces as she lets her obsession override any sense of ethics in finding the answers to her questions. It reminds me a lot of how fucked up science, in particular psychology, got in the US in like the 50s and 60s, how easily objectivity can turn into cold, callous, and even cruel and abusive methodology as one convinces themselves that the pursuit of knowledge is worth sacrificing our own morality.

least favorite thing about them: this is shallow of me, but I don't like her new body lmao I think her old one suits her more.

favorite line: I like what she has to say to us after fighting Jerren. She asks that when we become Elden Lord that we remember her, and tell her of the secrets of the Elden Ring itself. I think it's a tiny, subtle little reminder that the sorcery vs faith divide is a contrivance, as Miriel tells us. They are interwoven, each holding 'secrets of life' because in truth, they come from the same source.

brOTP: In a perfect world, Thops would've become her student when she recognized the brilliance of his sorcery.

OTP: It's hard for me to ship her with anyone, because she seems so focused on her goals. Maybe a pre-primeval current Lusat or Azur could be a saucy story.

nOTP: Jerren or Thops. Maybe Jerren knew her before she went off the rails, but I can't see her appreciating anyone associated with the Carians. And Thops, I like him better as her fangirl lol

random headcanon: She doesn't seem all that surprised about us serving Ranni, mentioning her casually when she tells us about how to unseal her fate. And she has some association with Seluvis, owing him a favor for some unspecified help after her expulsion. I wonder if Sellen, given her hatred of the Carian royals, was once colluding with Seluvis in his plan to turn Ranni into a puppet.

It's all business. The accounts are mainly done to give them an image. For girlfriends, it is to be successful because they are known as girlfriend's. When you look at Kelly's Instagram, fashion posts or others are not very successful. Whereas when she posts max, it explodes, there are a lot more comments and likes. And yet she is one of the girlfriends who has the most followers and who says she has an influence in fashion. (the fascination and obsession with some girlfriends is beyond me, it has become a business for them too. Their success depends on their relationship) It's not said unkindly, it's just reality.

Yeah, I get that, and fair play to them. At the end of the day these guys find them on Raya, and they’d be wayyy out of their league if they weren’t drivers, so I think they know what they’re getting to an extent.

Could never be me, but then, I wouldn’t date someone in the public eye and if I did I would be the most despised wag ever for sure lol. I’m not cut out for that life.

Unpopular opinion, but I think of the current gen drivers it’s only Alexandra and Lily Z who are seriously not interested in building a following. (Yes Alexandra is Charles’s sponsor billboard but she definitely hasn’t taken anywhere near the amount of things she’s probably been offered)

Mau nulis unpopular opinion tentang drakor yang lagi ditonton, yaitu Cinderella at 2 AM. Sebenernya lagi nonton itu sama No Gain No Love sih, tapi karena udah banyak yang nge-rave jadi aku nulis tentang yang satu itu aja haha.

Cinderella at 2 AM ini kan adaptasi dari Webtoon ya, meskipun baru baca sekilas webtoonnya (masih chapter 1 hahaha). Emang si plot-nya teh kerasa loncat-loncat. Kayaknya memang ga mudah juga sih menyesuaikan antara webtoon sama live action drama.

Tapi ini ratingnya kebangetan euy, mentok di nol koma berapa gitu yaa lupa.. terus sempet merhatiin beberapa komen netizen juga katanya keliatan banget age gap antara FL sama ML nya dan FL nya tuh kurang badass cenah.

Pas aku udah nonton, duh ini mah bukan kurang badass, tapi FL nya tuh punya trauma yang berlapis-lapis lebih dari wafer tang* 😫

Bayangin aja, dari kecil udah dipukulin terus sama ayahnya yang pemabuk. Belum lagi dia punya adik kecil yang harus dia lindungi. Mamahnya juga malah ikut marah-marah dan nyiksa anak-anaknya. Gila sih.. kalo aku ada di drama itu mungkin aku bakal ngajak dia ke psikolog 🥲

Setelah nonton ya ngerti sih, ini mah not your typical romance antara si kaya dan si miskin/rakyat biasa aja. Beda sama Business Proposal ataupun King The Land yang cewenya walaupun bukan dari keluarga kaya raya tapi ga pernah kekurangan kasih sayang karena punya keluarga cemara.

Sikap-sikap FL di Cinderella ini sewajarnya begitu, karena itu sebagai coping mechanism-nya dia yang punya lapisan trauma tebel banget dan seumur hidup berada di survival mode, huhu *peluk Ha Yoon Seo 🥹

ML nya juga bukan tipe chaebol yang manja kayak Gu Jun Pyo atau Kim Tan (Lee Min Ho perasaan dapet peran anak manja mulu, hahaha). Entah kenapa, menurut aku dia udah tergolong dewasa dan bijak meskipun lebih muda dari FL nya. Aku gatau ceritanya mereka beda berapa taun, tapi aslinya beda 14 taun dong, ga keliatan 😫

Moon Sang-min berhasil bawain karakter Seo Joo Won yang terus berprogress jadi pemimpin muda yang bijak, ga gampang kepancing emosi, visioner, ngerti kerjaan bawahannya (karena dia emang mulai dari bawah dulu kerjanya), dan ganteng, hahaha..

Liat gestur dan ekspresinya tuh entah kenapa jadi inget sama Mario Maurer waktu jadi P'Shone 😆 Progress yang dia tunjukkan juga sedikit banyak terinspirasi dari Ha Yoon-seo alias sang FL yang udah duluan jadi leader, sehingga dia bisa belajar banyak dari FL nya.

Well, kalo buat aku sih drama ini YES ya, aku kasih rating 9,2/10, hihi..

Sekarang lagi masanya ML drakor pada lebih muda dari FL ya. Meskipun real age gap nya pada jauh, tapi pada bisa balance sih chemistry-nya. Hebat 👏 menyala para berondong 🔥🤣

unpopular opinion, but i think dove and damiano are monogamous. i don't think she'd risk a giorgia situation, him getting caught with another woman and "embarassing" her. also back in october when they had just started dating, he went on that podcast in la and said the biggest misconception about him is that he's a player and likes one night stands. why say that if you plan on hooking up with strangers from dating apps? he must be pretty stupid if that's the case. in my opinion he's either deleted the app but forgotten to delete his acc or it's a paid partnership. that's a thing with these apps, they pay celebs to maintain a profile there so they'll attract new customers.

I had a theory that he forgot to delete his Raya account.

What are the best and worst movies you've seen?

Hmm... for worst movies, I'd say Karate Kid 3, Raya and the Last Dragon, and the original A Christmas Story 2. These might be unpopular opinions but idk, I have weird taste. Karate Kid 3 butchered Daniel and made me feel physical pain at multiple points (and not just because he's punching bricks). I felt so bad for Mr. Miyagi. Raya is a beautiful movie, but the pacing was a bit off IMO and the moral seemed tacked to the end. Christmas Story 2 was... what even was that. In all honesty, I stopped watching within the first 20 minutes, when he started sniffing his crush's hair. Ew.

Best movies? It's a bit embarrassing, but Young Guns 1 and 2 are my favorite movies! Sure, they're silly and kind of dumb, but the performances are great and the story somehow draws me in. Casino and Goodfellas are also my favorites (I live for the Goodfellas long shot!). Honestly, I prefer the book over the movie, but The Godfather was pretty good. Also Badlands. And Apocalypse Now. And Men at Work, which is really stupid but it's watchable in a dumb way

To the casting director and executives involved in disney's Raya and the Last Dragon,

I want you to look at the cast of netflix's Trese and acknowledge that you could've hired more Southeast Asian/SEA-American talent like they did BUT YOU DIDN'T

Also, Trese is going to be available to Southeast Asian viewers without the need for additional fees on top of a monthly subscription fee and VPN, unlike Raya, because Disney+ isn't a thing in many countries :)

Verdi opera 🔥

As much as I acknowledge the objective genius of Verdi's operas, and I really enjoy the music, I personally find them more difficult to get into, at least more so than most other operas by other composers; I often need a great deal of mental prep before watching them. The two exceptions might be La traviata and Falstaff, I'm not really sure why.

Not a fan of Meg and Hercules as a couple. I ADORE them having an innocent male lead and a jaded female love interest, but Meg's situation with Hades makes it feel very toxic. The movie is kinda confusing on whether or not she can refuse Hades; one minute he uses incentive to get her to do what she wants (which is bad enough; her freedom for Hercules' death), and then when she tells him the deal's off, he reminds her that she has no say in the matter. Following this, she rejects his deal and he forces her into being exposed so Hercules will make a deal. She does sacrifice herself for him in the end, but it still feels very iffy for me, particularly since the backbone of her resisting him isn't even "I can't let this guy get killed" but instead "I don't wanna fall in love after getting my heart broken and having sold my soul" (which is EXTREMELY valid, but so is the other point). Had Meg been a normal human and made a deal with Hades to save Hercules or help him earlier on during his training, it'd be so much better.

2. Disney needs needs to stop making sequels just because of financial success and actually work to craft a narrative that requires a sequel or two. It's risky (considering the first film could have negative critical or commercial success, as well as take time and resources away from other films at the studio), but would have a better payoff, imo. I enjoyed "Frozen 2" despite it's flaws, but the fact that it felt independent of the first film did make it feel like we could've used an entirely different cast and made the same story.

3. I need more musicals with a male lead--The last one we had was "Tarzan"--or "Hercules," depending on your criteria. The revival era has had female leads for all their musicals, with a male playing as a co-lead or a deuteragonist. I know the girls are MUCH more valuable at Disney due to the Disney princess line and musicals with a male lead may be harder to market (well, not really; "Aladdin" and "The Lion King" were the highest-grossing animated films at one point, and their remakes grossed over $1 billion).

4. "Moana" needed a bigger (main) roster--Something I love is a nice-sized amount of main characters in a movie. "Moana" only had Moana and Maui for most of the movie, and thus it wasn't as enjoyable for me in that respect. "Moana 2" is introducing new characters, so I hope they can hold my interest.

5. Involve the Anderson-Lopez team in more musicals outside of the "Frozen" franchise--they almost got to do this with "Gigantic," but it fell through. Their music has been great, so I really hope to see them in more musicals for Disney outside of Disney's "Frozen."

6. NEVER return to hybrid animation for a feature film--It's too disorienting for me personally, and while the animation for "Wish" wasn't bad, it definitely didn't have the storybook vibe it was going for except with backgrounds. It would look fine if it was a video game, though.

7. "Gigantic" should've been Disney's anniversary film instead of "Wish"-- I already did a post on this, so I'll just leave it at that.

8. Raya is one of the best Disney leads in a while--Granted, her movie could've been much better and I wish the color of her clothes reflected her culture instead of going for neutral colors, but Raya is the blueprint for a great protagonist. It's been mentioned before how she's a feminist icon without having to really show it in ways others have in films, by being a confident warrior with no discussion of marriage or gender inequality brought up in the film. She's also deliciously sassy and quick on her feet. I may have preferred her OG concept of being stoic, but her swagger makes her one of the more engaging Disney leads, particularly as the adorkable trait started to show up. Speaking of...

9. Ariel and Mulan are the best adorkable leads for a Disney protagonist--While I don't have much issue with Anna and Mirabel and don't really find Rapunzel or Moana that adorkable, Ariel and Mulan were the blueprints for a funny female lead, and they felt less forced than later leads.

10. Aladdin is one of the worst Disney princes--DON'T KILL ME! He used to be my favorite Disney prince, until I watched a "therapists react" video to Disney couples and they brought up the fact that Aladdin had lied to Jasmine several times over the course of the movie. Him being insecure is a great character trait (a common one with Disney leads since the 90s, really), but it's poor writing to make his romance with Jasmine be based on a lie. I'd rather he just kept tight-lipped about his identity when Jasmine caught him the first time rather than covering up with another lie.

Raya and the Last Dragon should have been a TV series.

There’s just so many plot points and messages that would have gone smoother if this movie was a tv series. Namaari’s character arc, Raya’s trust issues, the message itself kinda suffered because of the rushed pace. And I would also believe that Raya and Namaari would have became better friends if RATLD was longer. (Not to mention just more time to have tension between the two-)

But I think Riot and Raya would be a cute couple. Think about it, when Riot FINALLY learns that Jem isn’t a real person, Raya would volunteer to comfort him. Eventually, the two would become close.

Unpopular Opinion

I really like the dragon’s design for Raya and the Last Dragon and I’m really excited to watch the movie! It still looks very visually pleasing and expressive and I feel like the movie should be judged on its writing and animation rather than how the eyes look on the dragon. So far, it looks incredible! I’m hyped! I hope it wrecks me!

Also, don’t send hate to people just because they like this movie so far. You can disagree but you shouldn’t make fun of them or put them down. Have some human decency, please.
