Star Trek: Discovery – Jinaal – TV Review
TL;DR – We continue our quest in Trill, where all may not be what it seems, and the game of politics continues. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Disclosure – I paid for the Paramount+ service that viewed this episode. Star Trek: Discovery Review – As we fly through the galaxy on this quest, it has been interesting to see just how much this season of Discovery is linking itself back to the past…

Stickup from Raven Kwok on Vimeo.
ravenkwok.com/stickup/
Stickup is a code-based generative lyrics video I directed and programmed for the track Stickup (itunes.apple.com/us/album/stick-up-feat.-juliette-lewis/id1059843613) by Karma Fields (soundcloud.com/karmafields) & MORTEN (soundcloud.com/mortenofficial) featuring Juliette Lewis (twitter.com/JulietteLewis). The entire lyrics video consists of multiple stages that are programmed and generated using Processing.
The system for generating the visuals is partially derived from the one previously used in Build the Cities (vimeo.com/121096680). Lyrics are parsed, making each layer of quadtree structure subdivide itself to a corresponding pattern. ____________________________________________________________

Raven Kwok:  New Work
Raven Kwok (aka 郭   锐文), who has previously been featured in Cross Connect, is a visual artist / animator / programmer mainly focused on exploring generative visual aesthetics brought by computer algorithms and software processes. In 2014, Kwok graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with the M.F.A. degree in Electronic Arts. His work has been screened and exhibited at many film festivals.
Many programmers create generative art;  few have the ability to create work that is as beautful and compelling to watch both in terms of motion and design.

Star Trek: Discovery – Full Season 4 – TV Review
TL;DR – A season that is equal parts uplifting and frustrating   ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Disclosure – I paid for the Paramount+ service that viewed this episode. Social Codes:  Must See Online Exhibit
Tumblr media
Social Codes is an online exhibition by an interesting organization called Feral File led by a long time code artist Casey Reas, who is famous for creating (with Ben Fry) the Processing program language that so many code artists use today.
The exhibition is all code based.  You visit the site and click on each piece separately and either watch or interact with it or both.  The art is delivered via code instead of mp4 or gif.
However, it is an art exhibit.  Each piece is designed to be viewed as a ‘work’ and the interaction is not necessary for you to enjoy it.
And this is all Motion Art.  All of these pieces move.  The reason I was so keen to see it is that the exhibition included artists whose work I have featured and written about:  Raven Kwok, Dave Whyte, Frederik Vanhoutte.  There are other well know code artists in the exhibit that I have not written about, but it is an all star lineup to be sure.
Of course all of these pieces can be purchased as NFTs.
This feels important:  A highly curated exhibit that is shown at a specific time in a specific space designed to be friendly to the artist’s vision - ‘a place for artists to show their work in an intentional way’, as he says.  I am sure this is not new, but during this mad gold rush for NFT gold it feels important for the sake of the art.  Casey Reas has taken great pains to make sure it is limited in the number of artists and was careful to have a specific launch time.  Reas has said that it will stay up as long as Feral File exists.
In the current world in which your every feed is crammed with every type of good bad and horrible image, more careful curation like this is needed.
Go to Feral Files and read what Casey Reas writes about what he is doing.
Casey Reas:
“In 2021, most artists have largely stopped creating their own viewing spaces, or their own galleries online. People have grown accustomed to posting their work to these very bland commercial spaces like Instagram, for example. But those platforms create such a constrained environment for expression and for viewing work. Everything’s sort of the same size in an endless scroll, all jumbled together. While Feral File is not a response to Instagram, it is a place for artists to show their work in an intentional way.”
