Will I need to know the arch of raveloft to make sense of the supercool/raveloft five?
My intention is to write it so that you don’t need to know anything about Ravenloft to enjoy it- just like a player doesn’t need to know anything in advance to start the game.

“i’m off to a place i shall never come back from.” - binghe
" take me with you? " tova looks at what left of raveloft. they have not gotten up in hours. not willing to test to her new found immortality even if they wanted to. it's hard to get up.for the first time in a long time she longs for the tomb. for the amber temple. for the voices of the dark powers to return to subtle and evil whispers. as opposed to the nightmarish everyday reality of barovia. she would now face. " i think i would like to leave this place. "

Hi! I'd like to request a palette for a character I made for a Curse of Strahd campaign. She's Naireh Silverscream, an LG aasimar cleric of Kelemvor. She grew up in a merchant family, but had enough of the crime-centered workings of her city and left to be an acolyte. They were close with her deva guide, so when they disappeared she decided to look for them, and find out what destiny meant for her to accomplish. I associate her with silvers (she has silver markings on her face), reds and greens.
Given this aasimar is in a Curse of Strahd campaign, I wanted to include a very special vampire d10, along with gorgeous silvers, greens, and reds. I hope this manages to survive Raveloft and all the terrors it brings. I know it’s a tricky one!
Help support the blog?

“Indeed but it is revising itself as we look at it.” Will pointed to the words traveling across the page.
Godwin stared and started flipping through. “There are new additions to those that live at Castle Raveloft, it seems he has more than just his three brides and groom. He has a wife and children too.”
“Well that seems promising for our beloved Angle and demon, don’t you think?” Jane asked.
Meanwhile in seacoast… || multi
Juliet frowned as she looked around the apartment it didn’t look like they had left long ago, aziraphale had his books everywhere as usual but it didn’t look like anything malicious had happened. She let out a sigh and headed for Vlad and honey’s next.
Lottie had called her saying she wasn’t able to get ahold of the new parents, they were supposed to meet for coffee to talk about raising changelings. The Them hadn’t heard anything from their companions from the other world either when Juliet had checked, anathema and newt were on the same boat so the guardian in training had checked on their apartment after her calls to Crowley kept going to voicemail. Part of her wondered if she should call Raphael or Mikey but ended up thinking against it. She could find them right? Why worry the siblings if it wasn’t needed.
She knocked loudly on the front door of Honey’s mansion and fidgeted nervously just something didn’t feel right to her. Like nothing malicious but something was definitely wrong.
When a servant answered Juliet brushed past them before they could give her the spiel about the couple of the home not accepting uninvited guests and headed inside until she found Cerberus
“Hello sweetie!” She said happily as she momentarily forgot her mission to give belly rubs and snuggle him
“Where is Vlad? Can you take me to the big bad vampire king?” Juliet asked in a baby voice

Azalin Reviews: Darklord Tiyet
Domain: Sebua Domain Formation: 564 BC Power Level: 💀💀💀⚫⚫ (3/5 skulls) Sources: Domains of Dread (2e), Ravenloft (3e) Tiyet is the Darklord of Sebua, a desert landscape similar to Har’Akir, though somehow manages to be less “civilized” than Ankhtepot's dry husk of a Domain. Only the ruins of the city of Anhalla remain, the population is made up of nomades, and the people recognize no formal law. Chaos reigns.
Tiyet, a beautiful and ambitious woman, married Khamose, the 4th son of the Pharaoh. Not earning the title of "Grand" wife, Tiyet schemed to have the woman who was bestowed that title removed from her position. With a rather elaborate set up, Tiyet made it appear the Khamose's Grand wife committed adultery and as a result she was executed quite gruesomely; she was thrown into a pit of ravenous jackals.
Tiyet achieved her desires and became Khamose’s Grand Wife, but then she fell in love with Zordenahkt. Even though she really shouldn’t have felt guilty about this affair since her husband had multiple wives, it weighed heavily upon her. What she feared most wasn’t her own death at the jaws of jackals, but the judgement that would come after. I never was one to believe the gods have any say in our ultimate fate. It is absolute nonsense. But Tiyet believed and being sent to an eternity of damnation for her sins haunted her.
Zordenahkt told her about a ritual that would prevent her death, but then refused to do it for her. Honestly, what is the point of sharing such information if you’re unwilling to go through with it? It’s clearly what she wanted. I would have done it for her. Well, for a price, of course.
Their affair was discovered and Tiyet finally convinced her lover to perform the ritual, which changed her and resulted in his death. Perhaps that’s why he didn’t want to? He could have shared that particular detail with Tiyet. She became a unique sort of Mummy. She could now hear the beating of every person’s heart, echoing in her mind. This drove her to, understandably so, kill her husband and eat his heart.
This act pushed her desert home into the Mists and she became the Darklord of Sebua. She cannot abide the living (I can sympathize with this) for she constantly hears the beating of their hearts. At least once a year she must consume a beating heart, but tends to feast upon them more often than that.
In Sebua, Tiyet does not rule but remains secluded in an estate near the ruined city of Anhalla with only the undead as her company. She has immense power over the undead and though she is a Mummy herself, she appears as she did in life. If only all of us were so lucky.
Though I do not feel her crimes were great enough to warrant the Dark Powers attentions, she is still a formidable Mummy. Her touch drains the very essence of her victims and her gaze can paralyze even the strongest individuals. Her preferred method of bestowing death upon another is to paralyze them so she can feast upon their still beating heart.

Shit Said While I Was DMing, Part 1 (Probably)
In theory, Curse of Strahd, which I’m running, is a serious horror campaign. In practice...
(Strahd is the titular villain. El, Blut, Aiya, and Synden are the main PCs in the two sessions I got these from)
“Strahd von Zarobitch“
"Giant, evil tree" "Filled with blood" "It ate me" "I killed it"
“"Hey kids. Wanna buy a tiny dracolich?"
“Inject the goth through your vampire fangs“
“ON THIS EPISODE OF SPOOPY: EL REALIZES THAT HE FUCKING DIED“
Blut & El: Making our way downtown, walking fast- DM: "child shaped" Blut & El: -WALKING FASTER
“WHAT'S COOLER THAN COOOL???? Blut.”
“alignment: hungry bastard“
“Castle RAVEloft [muffled electronic music]“
“D&D characters having v serious convo about the word fondue“
“can't learn any lessons if you all die and are dead“
"Are you kidding me? El is the gay baby!"
“How do we spell angry-arm dude’s name again?“
“Stop saying ‘tapestries of leather daddies’!” “Oh, I’m sorry: woven art pieces of cow skin fathers.”
[about a skeletal pseudodragon] “SHE PROTECC”
"you get no bone readings from the sphere"
"Aiya Hotmom Insertlastnamehere"
“Aiya Hotmom is a valid Homestuck name”

Druid: “I’m out of spells and all of my weapons are short range, so I’m going to take the hip bone of a nearby skeleton and throw it at the mimic.” *As he rolls* “Pelvic thrust!”
*Five minutes of laughter and three points of improvised weapon damage later*
DM: “You do five damage to the mimic. You get two pun damage and- it’s the mimic’s turn. The mimic doesn’t know how to follow that, so it just stares at you and misses its turn because it can’t believe you just said that.”
*Cue the rest of us trying to get pun-damage for the rest of the game and turning the Raveloft one shot from horror to sitcom comedy*

i litterally had someone play this character in a raveloft campaign i ran, her name was maurice, she was a elf from eberron, and the saddest, wettest pathetic woman detective who both had a dead wife and was divorced and so very fun to fuck with
equal rights for women will never truly be achieved until we have more female noir detectives

Magic Story Podcast: James Wyatt
Today is the second release of the official Magic Story Podcast! As last time, I’m taking notes on the things I thought were interesting or important points!
Here’s the Podcast! (I actually remembered it this time!)
Host: Blake Rasmussen
Guest: James Wyatt
Topic: Plane Shift, Art Books, and the intersection of Magic and D&D
Art by Titus Lunter
The Art of Magic: The Gathering
Fans had been clamoring for art books for years.
Adam Colby on the brand team really led the push to make it happen.
Deal with Viz was signed before James transitioned to Magic.
James got the Art Book writing gig because of his experience writing world-building books like campaign or source books for D&D.
He really liked the enthusiasm for the book online once released.
Blake mentions there hasn’t been an art book before (or at least, anything like the current art books).
[Jay’s Note: This isn’t quite correct, but it’s been almost 20 years since The Art of Magic: The Gathering - The Rath Cycle and almost a decade since A Planeswalker’s Guide to Alara, which was very similar, but smaller, than the current art books.]
James starts with the World Guide, then fleshes it out into whats now a standard outline for the art book.
Where does the exclusive lore info in the books come from?
Most is unused World Guide content.
Sometimes the information is invented for the art book, like for humans on Zendikar.
What was his favorite bit of lore that he added for the books?
Human Religion and attitudes toward angels (they worship angels).
What was his favorite bit of lore that he couldn’t fit in?
When adapting Raveloft’s Curse of Strahd for Plane Shift: Innistrad, he came up with the idea that Bitterheart Witches were the descendants of the survivors of a village that got swallowed by the Ashmouth when it opened (this is not canon).
Plane Shift
The idea was behind the scenes when the art book deal was done, Jeremy Jarvis mentioned his desire for a D&D supplement to go with the art book. It would then make the art book a source book for those who wanted it.
James had run a Zendikar campaign for coworkers, but didn’t last very long because nine people wanted to play.
[Jay’s Note: DMing a group of nine sounds awful. I thought six was too many.]
James worked with Jeremy Crawford (from D&D) and Adam Colby (from Branding) to push the idea, and no one rejected it.
[Jay’s Note: “No one said no” is honestly the best way to get anything done.]
For an Innistrad campaign, he asked players to pick cards that represent their characters and goals.
Will Ansel [Not sure on the spelling], a project manager at Wizards, was James’ favorite player. Will played a lab assistant, subservient to Kimberly Kreines’ Cathar, who was kind of an softly evil voice.
James has adapted the merfolk race he created for Plane Shift: Zendikar for his own campaign.
How easy is Plane Shift to pick up for a non-magic playing D&D player?
Pretty easy, as long as they have the art book.
Dungeon & Dragons
James has been on both the D&D and Magic Team, on D&D for 14 years and Magic for two and a half.
He didn’t know much about how the Magic Team did things.
He brought his experience on book writing and how fantasy worlds work.
How does storytelling differ between Magic and D&D?
He’d worked on the team that did D&D novels, and notes there are lots of similarities between writing Magic Story and the D&D novels.
The episodic nature of Magic Story was really different than he was used to.
D&D rules lend themselves to writing, while Magic’s rules are more abstract. No character is going to be ‘tapping lands’ for mana.
There’s an advantage to writing for well-established characters on Magic, though.
Looking Forward
James is currently working on “Ham”, the Fall 2017 expansion, and starting the team for working on creative text for “Eggs”, the second set.
Doing Art Review for both sets.
Amonkhet’s Art Book comes out in about six months.
He really likes the chapter on the races of Amonkhet.
Note: James does not, in fact, reveal how he gets his hair gets so silky smooth.
Mel Li is up next week!

I think I read somewhere that Azalin was a misspelling of Azal'lan? Is it?
Azal'Lan was how I was known in my homeland of Knurl on Oerth. I earned this title, which translates to "Wizard King" after saving the people of Knurl from invading forces when I returned home to claim my inheritance after my elder brother passed and left the land in chaotic shambles, I might add. Much later on, when I sought cover in a morning mists and instead found myself transferred into the land of Barovia, the first people I encountered asked me my name. Not trusting anyone in this strange land, I simply gave them my title - Azal'Lan. Not sharing a common tongue, this was misspoken as "Azalin" later to Strahd by the same individual. When Strahd asked if I was "Azalin", I did not correct him. Since then I have gone by the name Azalin, which has no real meaning in these realms nor does my true title of Azal'Lan. That too was taken from me by my tormentors.
