So I started watching Succession somewhere between s2 n s3 and till yesterday, I was under the impression Rava Roy(?) is supposed to be of Indian descent (though why someone would name her after food idk) but then I saw some bts of s4 with the actress and I'm sure she's white or not idk 😂 Point is, can you tell if the kids are supposed to be adopted? (That's what was suggested in an article) like I'm so confused??? Are they biracial? Is her ethnicity ambiguous? I feel like maybe you might have the answer for me 😅

It's never explicitly stated, anon, but I'm pretty sure Rava is supposed to be Jewish.

Natalie Gold, the actress who plays her, is Jewish herself, and the name Rava actually has Hebrew origins dating back to around the year 300CE. Interestingly enough, it's actually traditionally a boy's name in Hebrew meaning a father, which feels pretty deliberate given the nature of the show. I think too that her being Jewish makes sense given the tension between her and Logan, and Kendall's hyper-sensitivity to Logan's anti-semitism, most notably in 3.04 which happened pretty quickly timeline-wise after Kendall retreated to (and took over) Rava's apartment when he didn't have anywhere else to go.

In that sense, I do think we're supposed to understand that Sophie is adopted, yes. I've talked about it on here before, but I tend to think that Iverson is biological, and it's that, plus him being a boy and white, that causes Logan to simultaneously dote on, weaponise and abuse Iverson more directly and visibly on screen than he does Sophie. As far as Logan's concerned, Iverson is the only heir beyond his children, and it's pretty clear that he's been found wanting. What that means for Sophie who is, of course, just as much Kendall and Rava's child, is open to speculation, but I think the show is deliberate in the way it focuses on Iverson and forces Sophie aside.

A/N: Happy pride month, my loves!!! These were all requests from months ago, I'm so sorry it took me this long!!! I never actually came out to my family. I've told friends and (accidentally) a few cousins lol, just not my mom/grandparents/etc. It just feels like it's my business and not anyone else's. Still, I am absolutely in love with this idea! I kept things pretty general so that a larger amount of people could relate rather than focused solely on a single gender/sexuality specifically! Feedback is always appreciated!!! 💜💜💜

Connor doesn't really understand what you mean. Connor is much older than you and the rest of your siblings. He was brought up in a different time. He doesn't really understand beyond the basics. Still, you're his baby. He wants to know everything about you, he wants there to be no secrets between you. So, that means doing lots of Googling and ending up on some sketchy, inappropriate websites. The next time he sees you, and you're able to get a moment alone, he pulls out his list of questions he has for you. Some things you can explain, others you have to figure out before you get back to him. You're still new to all of this. None of you were introduced to relationships and people and expressions that were different than heterosexual and cisgender. You still have a lot of questions and feelings and self-doubts that you have to work through before you can figure out these obscure references your brother has found on the internet. He's so proud of you, that he makes clear, even if he is a little confused. He gets you a little flag and hangs his own outside of his home. No one ever visits him besides you, so you're the only one who sees it. He wants to go to your local Pride and parade you around. Connor loves you, you're his baby. Regardless of your differences, he will always be there for you. Always.

Kendall thinks you're doing this for attention. That all of this is a phase you'll grow out of and realize you were wrong about. You don't officially come out to him. You know better. It's Connor who tells him when you start dressing differently/inviting potential partners over who are more than just friends. Kendall can't wrap his head around it. He doesn't understand that you were born this way, this is who you've always been, and not just a decision you made one day. He doesn't really get that being lgbtq+ isn't a choice. As far as he can understand, you're doing this to get (the wrong kind of) attention from Logan. That you want to be different and act out and so you're doing this. It doesn't matter that you're a rational adult just coming to terms with who you are, he still sees you as an irrational little kid. Connor tries to help by explaining the different colors in the flag/s, but that just makes him more confused and when he's confused he gets angry. When you fight, because when do the Roy siblings not fight, it's the first thing he brings up as a means of saying you're not as adult as you think you are if you're going to live your life like this. It's like a slap to the face every time. When they were married, Rava tried to get him to understand this isn't what he thinks it is, but nothing and no one can get through to him. He is your Mini Logan. There's no getting through to him about the matter.

Shiv is trying to be as comforting as possible. You were a teenager when you came out to her. You were full of so many confusing feelings, feeling you couldn't vocalize to anyone until it just sort of came out. Luckily, it was Shiv you said it to and not Kendall or your father. You were so upset, distressed, lost, she figured comforting you would be first and then addressing what you said. Shiv wasn't bothered by what you had said, who you said you were. She knew plenty of lgbtg+ people in college. She even went to a few gay clubs just to party. Still, she was of the mind that you were maybe a little too young to really know what those words meant. She said this, which, in the moment, broke your heart. Your sister, the person you went to when you were having friendship problems and disagreement with your father, truly believed you were too young to have figured this out about yourself. For so many years you thought there was something wrong with you, and you finally had words to describe it, and this is all she had to say? Of course, as the years go on, and you're more open about who you are in this family, she recognizes she might have been wrong. She would never admit to that, of course. She'll always be the first person you came out to. It's not a great story to have, but the hurt lessens as time goes on and you realize, though you have always known, your family isn't caught up with the times. They can say they're progressive, but it's in name only.

The first thing Roman does is list off as many crude jokes as he can. One after the other, a few of them with slurs, until he's gotten it all out of his system. Truthfully, he doesn't really care what you do or who you do as long as it's not in front of him. He's been ridiculed by Logan, and your siblings, about his sexuality (or lack thereof) that he can't understand why you're willingly telling him this thing about you that will make you different. In his mind, you're inviting the ridicule and blame that'll come from your father (and Kendall). Why would you admit to this? Why can't you just keep it to yourself? Why can't other people just keep these kinds of things to themselves? He's not against it. He's had his fair share of crushes on all types of people. But he thinks that it's a bit much when you start dressing differently or inviting partners to events/holidays. You're making yourself a target for hate and anger and confusion. He's spent his whole life trying to shield himself from those kinds of emotions because it can lead to hurt and abuse. In his mind, you coming out just invites these feelings and issues, leaving you vulnerable. He cringes every time you tell someone new because he fears it'll lead to blame and ridicule. He doesn't understand why you have to be so open about this when, for decades, people like you lived in secret? What's so hard about keeping it a secret? It's safer that way.

okay, so a brief history of my headcanon for rava and kendall’s relationship

 i think that kendall and rava probably met at harvard. while he and stewy WERE partying pretty hardcore, i think that hero-complex kendall was also trying (and mainly failing) to do some social justice work and in a very hardcore “i hate my dad” phase. rava, who was from a moderately wealthy family and studying to be an attorney, saw him and was kinda entranced by how passionate he was.

they wrote articles together for the harvard lampoon that were some biting and sometimes insightful social commentary. kendall, at the time, was very against working for waystar and they spent a lot of time spitballing with stewy about what they could do. stewy was very profit minded so he ended up noping out of the project before he and ken had even graduated.

she and kendall got married right after graduation from undergrad half because they were very in love and half because they wanted to upset their respective families. rava continues grad school and kendall flails his way through a few different corporate jobs, trying to pitch ideas that seemed ethical but weren’t really practical and then getting into fights with people about not understanding his “vision”. that ended with him being fired from each when business bosses received confirmation that logan roy wouldn’t come for their heads if they fired his son.

when it became clear that employment elsewhere... wasn’t really going to work out for him, kendall sunk deeper and deeper into addiction as rava had her back turned with her last semester of law school and studying for the bar.

he makes a habit of using big, showy gestures of affection whenever she’s getting too frustrated by his behavior. it works well for a while.

halfway through rava’s semester of studying for the bar, kendall had an incident bad enough that she had to cart him off to rehab and it set her back a semester before she could take the bar. (which she did pass! yay!)  after he got back from rehab, they decided that he’d take his dad up on the offer of a job at waystar to “get him back on his feet”, and they started turning their attentions towards having kids instead.

kendall’s new big project, immediately, became kids. they decided that they like BOTH the options of adoption and having their own bio kids, so they started trying for bio kids a lot, but also doing research on good ways to adopt kids.

kendall did about half of that, with jess helping him stay focused and actually doing most of it. with his white savior complex, a transracial adoptee from india was a pretty obvious choice. a few months after sophie’s adoption was finalized they got sophie and kendall, for a while, put all his efforts into being The Best Dad TM.

it’s great while it lasts, but the increase in kendall’s time off work with waystar led to some pretty harsh criticism from his dad including “what have you got a wife for, anyway, if you’re doing all the raising? mister mom gotta go home and take care of the baby? pa-fucking-thetic” so he tries to focus more on work, which stresses him out, and he’s pulled between wanting to be an awesome dad and make rava happy but also Oh God My Dad Thinks I’m a Loser and i want to stick it to him but also make him proud of me, and it leads to a lot of him not doing anything that makes him happy or proud and just slipping back into alcohol.

this period does result in them getting a consistent nanny instead of babysitters, though, so at least the kids are a bit better cared for.

the slope leads down for a few years until it’s at the point where he can’t get off the couch for sophie’s 2nd grade meet the author day and rava makes him try seeing a therapist. again. it gets worse instead of better as he’s pulled between work, dad, and his wife and kids. logan keeps trying to pressure rava into leaving her job as a civil rights attorney just as he keeps trying to fold shiv into the company, and it causes some additional tension. and this, of course, is on top of kendall now being groomed as logan’s successor.

add in: iverson’s autism diagnosis and kendall absolutely refusing to confront what it means both for iverson AND himself, and he starts slipping back into the hard stuff. he’s erratic and impossible to be around and rava finds bits of coke on iverson’s ipad, which is when she tells kendall he has to move out.

if he can get himself cleaned up and show her that he’s ready to move back in with them, then she’ll let him. (spoiler alert: he never does this, even though he tries)

I've kept Roy Reader (and all my fic readers) description-less because most fics are explicitly white or white-coded readers and that's not super inclusive of the community, so I mean Roy reader being adopted... 👀 (it could be possible and I do endorse that being a headcanon).

I love that haha and you're 100% right! I love Rava and Rava KNOWS! In Furtive Hands Kendall says he eventually figured it out and I'm sure he figured it out because of some interaction between Rava and Roy Reader or he says something about Stewy or you to Rava and her behaviour change or in a different situation she accidentally implies something that's subtle and he kind of puts it all together.

What are your Tabitha headcanons/thoughts on her backstory? She is surely wealthy in her own right?

Oh, yeah, I definitely think she’s wealthy.

In many ways, she sits in a really interesting place in terms of the show’s canon – she and Naomi are friends who have slept with each other previously, but it’s ambiguous as to how much the other Pierce’s know her, she’s obviously of a social position high enough to get invited to parties like the Rhomboid Party and to rate in Logan’s eyes as a real prospect for Roman, but not high enough to indicate political advantage / threat in the way Naomi does, or low enough to indicate either a social climber (Tom) or a fee-for-hire (Willa).

There’s also an interesting beat in 2.03 where Roman’s telling Tabitha that Logan’s planning on buying PGM where she replies but my parents watch that which is so rich and textured in general in terms of what it tells us about her being raised in a (likely affluent) politically progressive household while feeling no qualms about getting into bed personally and politically with the right if she likes them.

Funnily enough? The character on the show that reminds me the most of is Rava.

That kind of makes me think that Tabitha and Rava probably grew up in a similar tax bracket. Not with the sort of billion-dollar lifestyle that the Roy’s lead, but probably a multi-million-dollar one. The sort of situation where neither have had to work, and while Rava works in consulting (which the Succession scripts have shown us!), Tabitha doesn’t seem to have a real job, or at least not one beyond socialite which I think is what the show positions us to believe.

Getting full into headcanon territory, I’m kind of obsessed with the thought that Tabitha’s the daughter of a PGM equivalent of Gerri? Like her mom’s a significant lawyer at PGM, which is maybe how she ran into Naomi (maybe Naomi spent a few weeks after her mom died sleeping in their spare room), and none of the broader Pierce family fully knows who she is in the same way half of the Roy team seem to forget Gerri has daughters at all.

And Tabitha, of course, has always been bright and charismatic, but she’s looked at what her mom does for work, lived it, up close and personal for her entire childhood and adolescence, and maybe all of her mom’s ambition killed her own. After all, she knows the people who have real influence, and it’s the people with a hand on a shoulder or a cock or a throat, and she knows the best way to get ahead is to get on top of or underneath someone. She knows that the future’s out of her hands and has the security to accept that, and she tells herself maybe that she’s a lover not a fighter, and so she’ll just embrace whatever opportunities present themselves.

Only she fucks Naomi, and maybe a part of it really is all over for her. Because Naomi is fun and she’s funny, but she’s also mean and fucked up and leaves bruises on her hips and coke on her coffee table and mascara stains on her pillow, and it’s such a fucking cliché, but Tabitha thinks maybe she is too. The hedonist daughter of an ever-striving, ever-ambitious mother.

And Naomi’s not supposed to be the one who matters, but maybe she is, because Tabitha fucks a million hedge-fund pricks and trust-fund babies even before sort-of-Tom and almost-Roman, but for Tabitha, Naomi’s the thing, the one.

The person she’s preconditioned to serve, forever a lady-in-waiting to a queen’s court, just like her mother, maybe, in service if not role or title, and she doesn’t realise it until it’s over, but maybe Roman was a part of that too. A different court, a prince instead of a princess, both inaccessible, albeit in different ways, and Tabitha never wanted to be her mother, but yeah, okay, maybe all this shit was inevitable.

Maybe Tabitha was always an outsider on the inside, looking at all these little heirs and heiresses dipped in gold, and thinking - -

I just imagined Roman having that, “Is he in there?”….”Well can we get him out?” moment but it’s Kendall’s funeral and Stewy’s there and this is after Stewy and the poem and they’re both having these moments of seeing each other truly for the first time ever and instead of running off to get his ass kicked for crying (because Logan says some shit about it because he can’t handle his son’s open grief as he completely shuts down) Stewy convinces him to leave the funeral with him and they end up having “one time only (yeah right) never again (liars), grief induced, solace sex” that starts everything off. You also have Mencken seeing Roman leave with Stewy and then he’s got feelings about that: I know he ends up marrying Stewy but I do love the idea of him in a love triangle with Mencken and Stewy.

Brutal. This makes a lot of sense to me, though. At least part of Roman's reaction in canon had to do with the lingering guilt that he'd somehow been responsible (as I've said otherwise, Ewan's eulogy was a huge part as well); the same would scan for Kendall, even if he doesn't have the same hangups about Kendall that he does about his dad. I think Roman thinks he's numb when he gets to Kendall's funeral, and suspects that people will just bullshit because this is a Roy funeral so whatever, but then Rava and Stewy both make it abundantly clear in their eulogies that Kendall is really, actually gone, and then it's Roman's turn and he can't do the dumb detached bullshit he'd planned at all. Kendall is gone, forever, and it might be his fault.

Stewy would absolutely know to pull Roman away, because he knows how Logan is, and I think it'd be the weirdest interaction the two of them would have ever had with each other. They just actually showed real human emotion rather than just pretending to be cool and detached assholes unbothered by shit like that. It's not usually how they observe each other, and it'd be impossible to easily go back from that, especially on the day of the funeral itself. Funeral day hookup makes total sense to me. It's not like Roman would know how to cope, and probably the only thing that would break through to him was physical comfort, which Stewy would know had always worked for Kendall. I can't imagine that Roman wouldn't want to protest but also be so fried and turned on that it wouldn't be inevitable.

I think if I did a Stewy/Roman/Mencken triangle, I might want to play with Arian's headcanon that Stewy and Mencken are friendly or friends. A little bit of supposed friendly competition for him that's really way more serious than ever intended is kind of is fun to me.

                                        rava loves love. not only romantic love, she is the type to tell her friends she loves them. she is the one who always reaches out to others, she branches outward, she loves with all of herself and always has. love hurts. and rava has had to learn in life that most of the time, you have to let it go.  so, she cuts people out, she lets them leave, because she knows it hurts more to hold out hope that they’ll change, or come back. ( you can only give so many chances. ) 

                                        the biggest example of this is of course, the roy we see her have the most interaction with. because she loves kendall, loved kendall, loves kendall.he tells her he loves her and she keeps a distance, she can’t tell him she loves him, because it opens a door, lets him get his foot in, and it’s dangerous to do that because as much as she loves him, she knows him. she knows how unhappy she is with him. he offers her their life back, and she refuses because she knows it isn’t the best for either of them, nor for their kids.

                                        love hurts. she’s still learning it every time she sees him, every time she sees how the kids react to him and how their cries go ignored, or how he endangers them.  she loves her children above all else, and she wants them to flourish, to grow up and know that they are loved. that they are wanted and supported in all things. she will always put them above herself, above her partners. she has learned love hurts, but she never wants her kids to feel that way.

Connor loves being a father. He thought his greatest life purpose was being a big brother, but really it was to be a dad to you. He loves you more than anything. Despite being oblivious sometimes, Connor is a very attentive and present dad. He goes to every school event, every game, every play, every activity. He's the parent who goes on school field trips and volunteers for every classroom activity. Raising you is the biggest blessing of his life. He spoils you rotten. He wants you to have everything. Absolutely everything. Connor tells you about your Pop-Pop and your aunt and uncles, about how they used to be a lot closer, trapped in a years-long battle. He even tells you a bit about his mother, wanting you to be as connected to her as you are your other grandparents. He doesn't know what he'll do when you leave, when you move out. He loves being your dad. You're smart and funny and you love him no matter what, no matter how awkward or clueless or loving he is. It's all he ever wanted, he knows that now, to be a dad.

Kendall isn't very attentive. You have your younger (half?) siblings, Sophie and Iverson, and Rava is like a mother to you, but your relationship with your dad is strained. It's hard. Your mother does the best she can, and she's been trying to save you from him for as long as you can remember, but you know better. Your father didn't go to rehab until a few years ago. Before then, you mostly saw him on holidays if you were lucky and vacations. He sorta moved on, started a whole new family with Rava, and that hurts. As you grow up, you really realize that he was just a kid raising kids. He still has a lot of growing up to. You're not mad at him, you can't be. Look at the life he's lead, the people around him. No wonder he's a stifled kid. Still, you feel wronged. No matter what, he's your father. He should have stepped up to the plate. He should have taken his duties seriously. The older you get the more you understand him, his upbringing, but you're still connected to those frustrated feelings of childhood. You want him to be more present, and you hope he will be, but right now he can't be. He's fighting for a legacy he'll never have.

Shiv is a complicated mother to have. She loves you, of course she does, but she's trapped by circumstances. She never wanted to be with your father, she never wanted to turn into her mother, but she is and she did and now you're the product. She has big hopes for you. She knows that you're smart, you're witty, you remind her a lot of herself. She never wants you fight to be heard the way she was. Never. She spent her whole life fighting and still ended up the wife of the CEO instead of CEO herself. She listens to you always. If something is unfair or unjust, if you think you deserve something or want to do something or become someone, she is always there to listen. She 100% supports you in everything you do. She doesn't want you to end up like her. She does everything she can to support you and give you all that you want so that you never feel like she did. Raising you just makes her more upset with Logan. Regardless of your gender she knows you're a capable, whole human being. Why couldn't he do the same? Why couldn't any of them?

Roman is definitely not your biological father. You're adopted by him or he's your step-dad, something like that, but there's just no way he would biologically father a child. He likes you, you're cool. It's a learning experience for the both of you. It makes him realize just how messed up his own childhood was. He feels no want or need to hit you, to abuse you, to send you away like he'd been. He definitely doesn't talk about his childhood in front of you, scared that it might affect you, even just the words enough to mess you up. You know better than to ask. He's not very affectionate, but he's working on it slowly. Very slowly. He's there for you when you need him, when you need a shoulder to cry on or someone to listen. He's trying his best not to be so defensive, so sarcastic. He wants to legitimize your feelings the way his never were. The more he's with you, fathering you, the less he understands Logan. The less he understands his entire upbringing. When you're visibly upset, nothing in him wants to react with anger. He only sees empathy and sensitivity and heartbreak, nothing he feels the need to punish. Fatherhood wasn't ever on his list of life goals, but he's glad that he has you.

Post-“Secession” Love Triangle Headcanons

Rava just knows Kendall’s still in love with her. He’s always running to her whenever she wants to talk or hook up, and he’s always calling her and making her feel needed. Not so much lately, actually, but she still knows.

He’s just running around with someone else, who is clearly just so into him, and she doesn’t even know she should be intimidated by Rava. And Ken’s doing big things finally going up against Logan when she was the one who always used to tell him that he was stronger than Logan gave him credit for. And now the party girl is with him, doing drugs with him, being the “fun one.” And she’s being a mom. It’s good.

And maybe she has a few more glasses of wine after everyone else leaves her apartment and Kendall’s still there finishing stuff up. It’s dark outside and she’s been annoyed at him all day and annoyed at herself all evening and she makes some snide comment about Naomi to him like, “It’s nice that you’re so trusting of someone’s intentions from that family.”

And he looks up and gives her that amused smile-smirk because he can tell exactly how she’s feeling. She’s so wrong, he thinks, but this is great. And she’s tipsy and she’s sure she still has him. A coked-out fling can’t compare to this. That’s not real.

He’s still smiling. The charm. It gets her like it did last time they went out. So she starts flirting a little while he goes back to typing, and he is loving it because he’s had absolutely no power over her for years, and it’s nice to feel in control for once, and he’s kind of laughing it off.

But then she really looks at him sitting there working and occasionally chatting with her, and she remembers the early good times when they were just hanging out at home and joking around together. She remembers him needing her. She can’t help herself- she comes over to him and pulls him up and wraps her arms around him- for kind of a long time. He doesn’t know what’s happening. And while she’s still hugging him, the warmth of the wine and his heartbeat makes her say she misses having him around sometimes. He’s kind of shocked because he thought she was mostly kidding. She wants him here? Is this real? There’s this pang that hits him, and for a minute he wants to stay because it feels sort of amazing to have her want him again, especially in an emotional way, when he wished for that for so long.

But he remembers that Naomi is always there for him, even in his worst moments. She just gets him without judgment and they have an undeniable connection. She’s so supportive. So good. And Rava usually makes him feel like shit about the past and can’t move beyond it. And she probably doesn’t even mean it. Right?

He pulls back, asks her if she meant it when she said she didn’t know if he could do it. She looks at him and then at the floor. Yeah. That’s what he thought. Naomi believes in him. He thinks back to how Rava didn’t say “I love you, too.” Thinks back to how Naomi didn’t either.

So he tells her he has to go, and she knows who he’s going to spend the night with, and she just stands there and sighs. He’s never wanted to leave before and she hates being the vulnerable one, doesn’t even remember how to be. And he doesn’t know what to say and she wobbles a little so he asks, “Uh, are you.. are you gonna be okay here by yourself?”

And he actually watches her close up again, watches the walls go up. She gives him that tight-lipped smile and says, “Of course. I’m used to it.”

And he shakes his head and leaves- she thinks she’s the one who’s been alone?

It was her choice not to get back together when he asked (multiple times over the last three years), and of course now she wants his attention when he’s finally fallen in love with someone else and is happy with her. It’s kind of a miracle he and Naomi are even still together after everything on the yacht, and he’s not about to fuck this one up. He has shit to do now. If he can do it.
