For Karin's backstory, do you usually go for anime one? I prefer datebook backstory, even though it's not detailed. Because manga showed one panel of Karin being experimented on with her arms showing bite marks. So I always believed that healing bites ability is result of Oro experiments. It makes more sense to me. Also, I am uncomfortable of anime backstory. And grass village confuses me. Didn't they still exist after the fourth war? I guess in fic, we could just say it no longer exists.

Okay, so the short version is that I usually do a mix of the two. I’m going to do a quick rundown on the differences between the two backstories for anyone who isn’t familiar. This means we’ll be touching on some very questionable subjects, because the anime went to some very concerning lengths. It’s going to be under a cut, because... yeah. Long.

The only solid canon, as in from the manga, that we have for pre-Orochimaru Karin is the Chuunin Exams flashback, wherein she is in a Kusa (Grass) headband, and is saved from a bear by Sasuke, which kicks off her crush on him.

The first backstory we received from Karin was in the databooks; this backstory came out prior to the Exams flashback in the manga. It stated that Karin was living in an unspecified village, sensed an army coming to destroy it, and tried to warn the rest of the town. Nobody believed her, so she ran to hide (I think in some nearby foothills/forest?), and everyone else was killed. Orochimaru then came by, tried to recruit her, and then let Sasuke convince her. Sasuke didn’t really have to do much beyond saying he was Oro’s student in order to get Karin to come along.

Now, given that Kusagakure still exists post-timeskip, at least in the Blood Prison movie, the village that was destroyed wasn’t Kusa. Either Karin was in a different village, or Karin’s backstory doesn’t include the village destruction element. I tend to go with ‘a different village,’ but I’ll get to that later.

The anime gives us a different backstory, one that takes Karin’s Kusa headband from the Exams as fact.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Karin’s backstory is not presented as a backstory, but rather an alternate timeline from her Eternal Tsukuyomi dream. I don’t know what the animators were thinking, deciding to use this hell as her dream of a ‘perfect world,’ but at this point the dream is treated as her default anime background so like??? Sure. Sure. We’ll use it, but we’ll also judge Studio Pierrot for it, because there’s “I don’t like this character” and then there’s “I’m going to have this character’s dream of a perfect world include over a decade of violating her health and bodily autonomy on a level of systemic abuse that is truly horrific, edging on fucking csa” because fuck you I guess? I’m still mad. I’d have been okay with the backstory as backstory because it fits her personality, but why the hell was it presented as her Eternal Tsukuyomi dream???

Listen LISTEN Eternal Tsukuyomi is supposed to be a perfect world for each individual You DREAM WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPIEST and they gave her a decade of physical and medical abuse, bordering on extended csa, only to die at sixteen because they'd 'used her up.’ like???

Anyway. Anime backstory:

Karin’s mother (unnamed) came to Kusagakure following the destruction of Uzushiogakure, and was granted refugee status in exchange for working at the hospital, having a similar ‘bite me and you’ll heal’ power as Karin does in canon. We don’t know who Karin’s father was; he may have been a Kusa citizen, or an Uzushio man who died prior to Karin’s mother’s arrival in Kusa.

Karin’s mother dies at some point during Karin’s childhood, having been used as a chakra healing battery to the point of dying of chakra exhaustion. At this point in the anime, Kusa orders that Karin must take over her mother’s duties as a healer, because such a technique is too useful to just leave alone. The bites start out on her forearms, eventually going all over her body, including areas that, despite the intent not being sexual in nature, do qualify as child sexual abuse.

She is bitten on the chest and thighs, by people she barely knows, with minimal consent on her part. She is a minor. This is csa and I hate that people forget this, or choose to exclude it to more easily vilify her.*

(Manga canon also has her with bites on her chest, at sixteen, most of which we can assume are not Sasuke since he seems to not know that biting her chest is provides better healing when she tells him to do it. Again: underage, coercion, chest bites, violation of bodily autonomy. It’s long-term csa in every canon. It may not be explicitly stated, but this is the most explicitly shown example canon has of this particular kind of trauma.)

Now, again, this is her Eternal Tsukuyomi (for some fucking reason), and not her technical backstory, and in that context she just... never gets out. She keeps getting used and abused, the bites eventually even covering her face, and then she dies before hitting twenty.

...so how do we reconcile this?

Elements we have:

Kusagakure headband during the Chuunin Exams (manga canon)

Saved by Sasuke, causing her crush; implies she was very poorly treated by the people around her prior to their meeting (manga canon)

No visible bite marks on her arms during the Chuunin Exams, but with the caveat that the marks are also not visible during Boruto, so it’s possible that Kishi, and in turn SP, just didn’t feel like drawing the scars. (manga canon)

Karin’s healing abilities were present at some point prior to Sasuke recruiting her to hunt down Itachi, but it’s unclear if it is a Kekkei Genkai or something nurtured by Otogakure. (manga canon)

Kabuto’s abilities during the Fourth War include Karin’s ‘rejuvenation’ and ‘life force,’ which implies that it may be a Kekkei Genkai but leaves it frustratingly ambiguous.

Experienced a village destruction, followed by Orochimaru taking her on, due to a Cassandra Truth incident, using Sasuke to convince her to join Oto (databook)

Her mother came to Kusa at some point post-Uzushio destruction; iirc Uzushio fell when Kushina was a teenager, so Karin’s mother either spent a decade or so wandering around prior to deciding Kusa was better than nothing (possibly when she got pregnant), or lived in Kusa for a period of time prior to becoming pregnant. Here’s what I usually go with:

I do think Karin was a Kusa genin. The databook and anime both state that she joined Orochimaru after Sasuke, so she’d have no reason to wear the headband during the Exams other than actually being a genin of Kusagakure.

I err towards the biting being a Kekkei Genkai, which means that it fits with the anime’s suggestion of Kusagakure having used her as a chakra healing battery prior to her arrival in Oto. THIS IS OPTIONAL in other people’s readings, because it’s not manga canon and it’s obviously an incredibly hard subject to work with.

So, Kusa kid, dead mom, chakra healing battery, genin at the Chuunin Exams, then... Otogakure. In order to work in the databook’s element of the destroyed village, we either have to wipe Kusa off the map, or it’s another village.

I’ve generally gone with stating that Karin was on a long-term mission as a healer in a larger civilian village, or possibly the country’s capitol (though that’s less likely). Kusa was obviously willing to send her away temporarily, as with the Exams, so if the price was right, they’d probably send her out on out-of-village missions as well. Would she have a team? Maybe.

Given her poor treatment in this scenario, and the implied distrust/abuse of refugees in the anime, it’s possible that any teammates she had either didn’t trust her as a person, or didn’t think her skills were as good as she claimed. Possibly they assumed that they’d be able to fight off a smaller attacking force, and that Karin was exaggerating or mistaken when insisting that they evacuate. In any case, whoever was with her, if anyone was, also died in this attack.

The army was very likely sent by Orochimaru, and it’s plausible that Karin was actually the main target. I imagine that a spy would have gotten word to Oro about a redhead with extreme healing abilities, and Orochimaru going “Gotta catch ‘em all, Ooh! An Uzumaki!” and deciding that the healing abilities played well enough into the immortality plan to be worth sending an army (and then going in person, with Sasuke) for.

Given how canon played out, she was worth it.

* Okay the reason I harp on the CSA thing in particular: there was a significant period of time where two headcanons were prevalent: that Sasuke was sexually abused by Orochimaru in his time as Oro’s student, and that Karin was a wannabe rapist.

The Sasuke thing was based on a manga cover and one of the anime openings, but had no actual textual basis beyond Orochimaru being a queercoded villain, which is a whole different problem. The Karin thing was based on a fan’s mistranslation of a single panel, along with later arguments failing to take slang into account and often had by people who don’t actually speak Japanese.

Ultimately, I’m furious that a large portion of the fandom painted a canon CSA victim as a wannabe rapist while pushing that same backstory element onto a different character which they often put as her hypothetical victim, oftentimes just to get her out of the way for shipping purposes. This is a long-standing grudge.

One moment Dr. Iplier was in his clinic, going through paperwork, and the next, Dark had appeared in his office and whisked him away to the edge of a pier. Dr. Iplier doesn’t know the whole story, neither does Dark. All Dark saw was a group of humans, one serving as a lookout, the others forcing Yandere’s head beneath the ocean, ignoring his twitching. All Dr. Iplier saw was Yandere sprawled on the pier where Dark had laid him, pale and cold and harrowingly still.

Even with all the pushing and breathing, that has not yet changed. Yandere has yet to respond to Dr. Iplier’s efforts. The doctor finds himself holding his own breath on every push, as if expecting it to be the last before Yandere springs back awake. But it hasn’t happened yet, and Dr. Iplier keeps pushing.

It’s not as if Dr. Iplier hasn’t seen Yandere injured before. It’s not even like he hasn’t seen him badly injured before. But those times were different.

Yandere wasn’t his son then.

Now, it feels as though the parent in him is fighting with the doctor in him. His doctor side is calm, efficient, knows exactly what to do and how to do it, and doesn’t let any distractions trip him up. His parent side is panicking, frantic, trying so hard not to break down at the sight of his son unconscious and unbreathing.

His son. His boy. His baby.

Dr. Iplier used to only remember how young Yandere was when he stumbled into his clinic delirious from blood loss, when Dr. Iplier stitched up gashes that spanned across his narrow chest, when he opened him up for surgeries and found a small heart, small lungs, small bones. Now, Dr. Iplier remembers how young Yandere is when he cries after a bad dream, when he reaches out for hugs at any opportunity, when he begs for something with a playful, whiny “Daaaaad, come on, please?” And those new memories juxtaposed with Yandere’s current still, blue-tinged face make Dr. Iplier feel like he’s the one who can’t breathe. Watching Yandere’s limp body ragdoll with each compression makes Dr. Iplier’s own chest hurt.

Ten, eleven, twelve–“Shishi, um, does this look bad to you?”–fifteen, sixteen, seventeen–“I’ll be more careful next time, I promise!”–twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three–“Arigato oto-san~!”–twenty-six, twenty-seven, twenty-eight–“I love you, too, Dad.”

One more pause, two more breaths, and the pattern repeats.

Dr. Iplier has seen other parents, other fathers, reacting to their children in danger. He’s seen it all. New fathers weeping alongside their wives over their little boys. Elderly men with shocked tears sliding their faces as they realize they might outlive their adult sons. Fathers of teenagers crying over the milestones their kids might not survive to reach. Dr. Iplier’s seen the ones who don’t cry, too; the ones who shout and scream, the ones who shut down and go silent, the ones who shake their heads and say it’s impossible, that there’s no way their boy is hurt, dying, dead.

Dr. Iplier thinks he’d be in the crying camp if he let himself think about the situation long enough to react.

Still, his mind wanders. He performs CPR on autopilot; his frantic mind can’t stay settled on it. He wonders what kind of expression Dark is making right now. Dr. Iplier hasn’t looked at him since he brought him here. He figures Dark must be keeping his composure, judging by how quiet he’s been since this started, save for the occasional crackle of his aura. Dr. Iplier also wonders how this situation happened in the first place. The group who did this to Yandere was already dead when the doctor got here thanks to Dark, so he can’t exactly ask them. They must have surprised Yandere, gotten the jump on him somehow.

One thing Dr. Iplier doesn’t, or at least tries not to think about is Yandere’s time, those numbers above his head broadcasting how much longer he has to live. Dr. Iplier could look, of course. He could always look. But he doesn’t want to. He’s afraid to. Because what if it’s gone from blue to red? What if it’s a lost cause? Dr. Iplier would rather spend a century doing compressions and breathing into Yandere, would rather push down on his chest until his organs are soup and his ribs are shattered, then ever accept that his boy is lost. Dr. Iplier knows, of course, that even if Yandere dies it might not be the end, that Yandere might come back to life in a few weeks or so. But only “might.” It’s not guaranteed, and Dr. Iplier knows better than to test death.

So he keeps pushing, keeps breathing, keeps thinking of anything but what��s right in front of him, keeps looking at his hands on Yandere’s chest and not at his time.

Five, six, seven–You’re stronger than this, Yan–eleven, twelve, thirteen–This can’t be how you die–seventeen, eighteen, nineteen–If you don’t wake up I’ll kill you myself–twenty-four, twenty-five, twenty-six–I love you so much, please–

He bends down to Yandere’s lips again, so blue, so cold, a little salty from the water. He forces air into him again.

“Breathe, honey,” he gasps, the first words he’s said in–how long? How many minutes? Who knows. Who cares. Yandere still isn’t breathing. His boy still isn’t breathing, his baby won’t wake up–

Dr. Iplier moves Yandere onto his side and into the recovery position, and Yandere lays there, coughing and hacking and spitting out saltwater. He shakes violently, from cold or shock or trauma, vomits out what food is left in his stomach, and starts to sob through his harsh coughing, but he breathes, he breathes, and so does Dr. Iplier.

As much as every fiber of Dr. Iplier’s body was on the edge of its seat waiting for Yandere to wake up, something in the back of his brain expected to lose him forever.

Dr. Iplier allows himself to feel relief, but he knows it’s not over yet. Yandere probably aspirated seawater, he definitely has some ripped cartilage or bone fractures, he’ll need more care until he’s out of the woods, so Dr. Iplier can’t let himself get distracted yet–

“Papa,” Yandere rasps, tears running down his cheeks.

Just like that, the world falls away, and there’s nothing in existence but Dr. Iplier and his boy.

He finally spares a glance at his time. It’s blue, thank god it’s blue, and slowly increasing, so Dr. Iplier allows himself to carefully take Yandere into his arms. One hand cradles Yandere’s head, tangling fingers through his sodden hair, the other winds around his back and holds him close.

“I’m here, honeybee, I’m here,” Dr. Iplier murmurs, voice trembling, “You’re safe, you’re okay.”

Yandere lets out a shuddery sigh before relaxing and going limp in Dr. Iplier’s arms. But Dr. Iplier doesn’t panic; he can feel Yandere’s breath against his neck in raspy but steady puffs. He presses a gentle kiss to Yandere’s forehead, and his skin is still cold, but the knowledge that it won’t be cold forever in turn fills Dr. Iplier with warmth.

“Is he okay?” Dark asks.

Dr. Iplier almost jumps; he’d forgotten Dark was even there. His expression is remarkably stoic, but his wild, flailing aura gives his true feelings away.

“Yes,” Dr. Iplier says, “He’ll need to stay in the clinic for a couple days at least, but he’s going to be fine.”

He’s going to be fine. He’s said those words hundreds of times, but it’s never felt like this.

Dr. Iplier recalls thinking that he’d be the crying type of parent if he let himself process what his son was going through. But he won’t cry until later, until after Dark teleports them all back to the clinic, until Dr. Iplier examines Yandere and puts him to bed, until Wilford and Chrome each have a chance to see their friend, until Dr. Iplier is finally alone in the clinic with Yandere sleeping peacefully, breathing easier by the minute.

Dr. Iplier will cry then, pushing out all the emotion he built up, as he strokes Yandere’s hair and tells his little one how much he means to him.

First Chapter & Disclaimer

AN: As mentioned in previous post, most people sent me asks about Gal Friday, so I decided to post that tonight :) The conclusion of Scion will be up tomorrow.

The lunch meeting with Hyūga Neji takes longer than expected. Some sort of internal crisis is going on with the latter’s company, and he needed to call in a favour. And of course, Neji is just as averse to asking for help as Sasuke is, so it took an entire meal of discussing stock options and comparing quarterly earnings before he cut to the chase and broached the subject.

Sasuke, naturally, made him stew for a minute or so, before agreeing, if only because he respects the other man. He also trusts him to a certain extent, at least in financial matters.

Neji has better business acumen than the entire Hyūga clan and company put together, yet might be passed over because of the family’s archaic inheritance laws. His cousin Hinata is technically supposed to inherit everything, being the oldest child of the family, but she has little talent when it comes to business. The whole reason for her being offered a position with the Uchiha family was to help her ease into things, but honestly, he thinks she’ll peak at the level of secretary.

Nothing against her character, she’s loyal and competent. But that’s about it.

Running a business requires a certain level of mettle and cool headedness that she doesn’t have.

And, of course, the ability to talk to people without fainting…

As he returns to his office, Sasuke glances at his watch, groaning when he sees that it’s only three o’clock. He’s meant to meet with Hatake Kakashi in an hour, but the man is constantly late, he likely won’t arrive until five.

Kakashi has been his mentor since Sasuke started working at the company after school as a teenager, and he has served as the right-hand man to both of Sasuke’s predecessors—his cousin Obito and, of course, his older brother Itachi. Kakashi even acted as Interim CEO before Sasuke took the reins, so it’s not as if Sasuke can simply cancel the meeting on him.

“You are a pitiful portrait of a man and I feel ashamed just being in the same room as you,” he informs him.

He scowls at her. “If you’ve been talking to my mother again—”

“She’s talked to your mother?” Kakashi asks, only just changing his guffaw of amusement to a cough when Sasuke shoots him an annoyed glare.

“Ino, actually,” Sakura chirps. “She says you get cranky when you get hungry. And I figure, if what I’ve seen so far isn’t cranky, I don’t ever want to actually see cranky, so really, feeding you is probably a public service.”

She grins proudly, one hand on her hip. Kakashi raises an eyebrow, indicating that Sasuke that the metaphorical ball is now in his court.

He considers for a moment and shakes his head stubbornly. “Not now. We’re working.”

Kakashi sighs.

“Oh, don’t be like that,” Sakura rolls her eyes. “It’s scientifically proven that working on an empty stomach increases your tendency to make mistakes.”

“That doesn’t happen to me.”

“Really? So that zero you left off the cost estimate for the Sarutobi Account was on purpose?” she asks, pointing at one of the papers to Sasuke’s left. “I didn’t realise your company had forty-five million yen just lying around.”

Sasuke’s eyes widen incrementally, but he refrains from snatching the paper to see if she’s right; Kakashi does that, though, picking it up and scanning through it. His face pales a little.

“She’s right,” he says. “We’ll have to reclacluate this before sending the official numbers out.” He smiles at Sakura beneath his match. “You’ve got a pretty good eye for a personal assistant. Are you sure you want to spend all your time with this one? I’m sure I can find someone more pleasant for you to work with.”

Sakura opens her mouth to speak, but Sasuke cuts her off. “We’ll eat now.”

He tells himself it’s because he doesn’t want to make a major mistake in the company over a stupid matter of pride. But Kakashi observes him carefully as he reaches for a plate of food, spitefully taking all the tomatoes he can see.

Somewhat spitefully, Sasuke begin to eat, relaxing a little bit because, well, he was actually hungry

He notices eyes on him and glances up, Kakashi’s eyes comically wide, while Sakura is watching him with amusement and something oddly like exasperation.

“What?” he demands.

“Were you absent in playschool when they went over manners?” she chides him. “I just saved you a fortune and brought you dinner. Anything you want to say?”

She crosses her arms and looks at him in challenge. He notices for the first time that she has rather muscular forearms, which seems somewhat at odds with her otherwise delicate-looking self. And her knuckles are callused the way his were when he still trained routinely in martial arts. He wonders if she still practices—

“Sasuke-kun,” she prompts, soft but at the same time a prompt that demands an answer.

Kakashi’s mouth may be invisible to him, but from the way his eyes focus on Sasuke’s like lasers, he’s probably repeating the words ‘Sasuke-kun’ with incredulous mocking.

“Tch!” Sasuke frowns at her, and then says, “Thank you.”

And then looks away from her, a clear dismissal, as he takes another bite of food. Kakashi is gaping at him now, but he ignores that, too.

Still, he can’t help glancing back at her out of the corner of his eye.

Her challenging expression changes, and she beams with genuine warmth. “You’re welcome!”

Sasuke feels like he was just physically punched in the gut and as he breathes in sharply, inhales a large glob of sticky rice.

He begins to choke.

“Sasuke?!”

“Sasuke-kun!”

Sakura is already reaching for him, perhaps to clap him on the back, but he waves her off.

“It’s fine,” he says tightly. “Go home.”

“Alright,” she says slowly, hanging back. She offers him a last worried once-over, and then smiles. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Then flounces away.

Sasuke watches her go, not entirely sure what just happened, but fairly certain that something did.

He is brought back to himself with the sound of quiet chuckling.

“What?” he snaps at Kakashi.

“Nothing,” the older man says, in a voice that is miles from innocent. “I just suspect things are going to get very interesting around here.”

Sasuke scowls. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“Hm…I don’t feel like telling,” Kakashi drawls. “More fun to watch you figure it out yourself.”

“I can fire you.”

“No, you can’t.”

I’m going to start getting plotty with this story after this chapter. I’ve finally got some ideas, it’s just going to take a while to outline. But I figure more stunned/clueless Sasuke can tide you over for a little while at least.

"I didn't kill them," Kudo leans his head back, voice hoarse as he closes his eyes. He shudders, a cough building in his chest. "I'm telling the truth, I swear."

Kaito struggles to think - The other could be lying, but the way he whispers is too genuine. Or rather, it sounds genuine, and Kaito doesn't want to overthink it, because how nice would it be if it were true? He decides to believe in the ex-detective, it's too much effort not to.

He smiles to himself, laughs under his breath.

Kudo opens his eyes, glances over at him, at the grin that's wormed it's way onto the thief's face. And he pales, well, most of him does - his neck remains splotchy, red and purple spreading across skin like a child's painting.

"I'm not laughing at you," Kaito says after a moment, his own eyes widening. "I believe you, but... just, what're the chances, you know? What are the chances that they'd arrest the wrong man and-"

He falters.

"We obviously need to talk about this," he continues, "but we also need to get you to the infirmary, okay?"

Kudo waves him away, gives a weak smile and rasps, "I'll be fine. Let's go back to the cell."

He grasps at the wall as he stands up, trying to stand on shaky legs. Kaito catches Kudo when he staggers, lifting one arm to settle around his shoulder, using his other arm to hoist him up.

"Don't be stupid Kudo," he says. The tone is not quite scolding, but it's wrapped with concern, is harsh enough that it lets the other know he won't take any nonsense. "You need to double check that it's nothing internal."

When he opens his mouth to respond, Kudo chokes on air. It hurts to hear - he wonders just how much it hurts Kudo, to feel that. Kaito gives him a look that tells him all his arguments are meaningless and that he'll drag him to the infirmary if he needs to.

Or carry him there, it'll probably be quicker.

"It's probably nothing," Kudo rasps when they're halfway down the corridor.

Kaito scoffs, "sure it isn't. It's not like being strangled is a big issue or anything. Of course not. It's not like this would have any future implications at all."

The other boy scowls, but doesn't protest again. Instead, he leaves Kaito to a sullen silence, letting him muse over what he's learnt. Kudo's going to die - which isn't an option, not if he's innocent. That leads to the question, why is the detective in prison in the first place?

Obviously, he's been framed. But why would anyone make it seem as if he's committed the murder of six people, especially when it's so contradictory to who he is as a person? He used to solve murders for Christ's sake - why would someone want to lead the public into believing he's guilty?

Unless...

No, he'll leave the theory until later, will wait until Kudo tells him what he thinks.

It's not coincidence that Kudo was thrown into prison, so there must be a reason behind it, and who better to tell him then the victim himself.

It's not long before they reach the infirmary. Kaito bundles Kudo inside, passes him over to the nurse and explains that he needs urgent care, right now, and that he should probably stay overnight to monitor his symptoms.

Kudo sends him a glance of disbelief, and only gets a shrug in response. His brows furrow as Kaito leads him over to a spare hospital bed, setting him down and looking at his neck. There are little red pinpoint spots - Petechiae - where fingers have squeezed against skin and worry flares in him, hot and boiling like rage but not quite.

"KID... I... Uh... thank you." Kudo mumbles as he shuffles against the sheets, trying to find a comfortable position. His hands bunch the blankets in his hand, and he looks almost as if he is curling in on himself, even if he's not moved much.

"Kaito."

"Huh?"

Kaito leans forward, trademark grin forcing its way onto his face. He says, "I think we're at the point where you can call me by my name. So... call me Kaito from now on, okay?"

Kudo's go wide. "I-"

"I'll call you Shinichi in return," Kaito continues, nodding to himself and turning around. "So, let's succeed with this escape of ours, alright?"

"Y-yeah."

The nurse decides to keep Shinichi in the infirmary overnight, much like Kaito had thought, just to keep watch and make sure the swelling stops without further injury. She hands him some inflammatory drugs, offering him a smile, before leaving them to focus on other patients.

Kaito stays for as long as he can, sitting against the wall. He thinks of different ways of trying to escape, wonders whether Shinichi's 'contact' would be able to get them floor plans, whether they could get him something better to pick locks with than the hair grips that he keeps hidden in his hair.

"The guard," Kaito says, when he's certain that the nurse is out of hearing range, "what are the limitations on what we can ask for?"

Shinichi leans forward, glancing over at him. His brows furrow and for a moment, he looks the part of the detective he used to be, eyes narrowed in thought. It's almost nice to see, Kaito thinks, regardless of the fact he usually hates law enforcement and detectives.

He should re-evaluate that, he decides. It might be that he simply hates Hakuba and has been assuming all over teenage detectives are as stuck up as he is.

"Can't be metal," Shinichi croaks, pausing to sip at some water. He winces as he swallows, but otherwise, he doesn't seem to be in too much pain, "it's got to be small, nothing that can't fit in his pocket or under any clothes."

"Hmm," Kaito says. If they can't bring in metal, then guards probably need to go through metal detectors every time they enter the prison. It's not odd, he himself has to go through some every time he leaves the west workshop to ensure he doesn't take anything out with him. Not that he has to worry in the evening, when the power is out. "Can he get the prison's building plans to us?"

Shinichi nods, "It shouldn't be too hard."

"Good," Kaito grins, pumps his fist in the air, "and a pencil."

48 days until March the 3rd and Oto-san manages to get them both a pencil and some building plans. During this time, Shinichi somehow talks a guard into bringing him a torch - 'For the evenings, because I just want to read some nights' -  and Kaito doesn't ask how, because he doesn't quite want to know what the other prisoner has done to acquire it.

He spends the day jittery, feeling like they shouldn't be waiting until lights out to look at the plans, even though he knows that they need to make sure the paper doesn't get confiscated.

In the end, he spends more time outside than he should, bouncing with energy. While Shinichi sits and watches him, he practises acrobatics, reminding himself of the time when he spent days practising front walkovers and dive rolls until his muscles are sore and he's certain that he can perform them without any failure, like he used to at heists.

He repeats back walkovers until he's confident that he won't stumble, before grinning over at Shinichi. When he's finished, Kaito collapses beside the other detective, closing his eyes and settling his breathing.

"You did gymnastics when you were younger?" Shinichi asks. He seems more relaxed around Kaito now, which is nice, if not a little odd with the countdown over his head.

Kaito hums, "I always had to much energy, apparently. Gymnastics was meant to wear me out."

Shinichi lets out a dry laugh, "I can't imagine you without all that energy."

"You've seen me without it," Kaito sighs, massaging his hands from stones have pressed against skin. Even the best spots in the yard aren't rock free - he's lucky that he's not cut into his hand. "I mean, after that phone call I had."

He's still not sure, even after a week of wondering, what Aoko had meant, and while he wants to know how to make things right, every time he thinks back on it, it leaves him wallowing in regret and a strange sense of self-pity. He doesn't feel any different when he's acting as KID as opposed to Kaito, and maybe that's the problem, maybe he's just too involved to find any answers.

Kaito sighs, closes his eyes, and pretends that it's not stressing him out as much as it is. There's so much he wants to do - he wants to figure out what Aoko means, he wants to come up with a daring escape - but most of all, he just wants it to be the evening, so they can read over the building plans and take one step forward to being free.

"I don't know what she wants from me," Kaito says.
