Tips on Writing Bishop

I've been asked a couple times for advice on how to write a good (03-style) Bishop, and I'm well-aware he can be a bit tough to get a grasp on. As someone who's studied him specifically to learn how to write him as accurately as possible, I figured I'd compile some thoughts in case it'd be helpful to anyone else. I know a lot of Rise takes on him are basing off the 03 version, so maybe this could help generate ideas, too. SO!

Big Overall Points!

At the core of EVERYTHING Bishop does are two primary motivations. The first: the protection of the earth. What this means to him can get tricky, because it doesn't necessarily mean protecting the people, at least not all of them. But it will be better understood alongside the other:

The second: The protection of his sense of safety. Bishop has been deeply traumatized, and everything he does is born of a want to avoid that pain ever again. In his mind, earth is a safe area, a controllable factor, and anything outside it is a danger that must be eliminated. This is why he will still be willing to put himself and other people on the line in service of this; any sacrifice is worth the greater goal. (It's worth noting, Bishop will claim the first as his motivation freely, but is likely not consciously aware of the second.)

Bishop deals in Big Picture ONLY. Another reason Bishop will willingly throw away anything, including the lives of the people he claims to protect, is that he seems incapable of understanding things on a small, individual basis.

Bishop is a cold personality. He does not have strong displays of emotion. He does emote, but for the most part it's muted, so I recommend using emotional bursts very sparingly. (In my own writing, as an example, I try to limit my use of exclamation marks in his dialogue as much as possible.)

At his core, Bishop is afraid, and his response to fear is aggression. This also makes it particularly difficult to talk him down, if he's put in an emotional state. His response to not being in control is often violent retaliation.

With those basic tenants understood, let's move next to some major personality traits:

Bishop is a controlling personality. This is a direct result of his trauma response. Things that can be controlled are safe, therefore he must control everything. If something cannot be controlled, it's a threat that must be eliminated. If he doesn't know why something happened, he becomes angry (including even when it benefits him.)

Bishop is very low-empathy. When writing him, I try to keep in mind that he cannot put himself in the perspective of others. (Or if he can, he doesn't care to.)

Bishop is a sadist. He gets personal enjoyment from hurting others.

Bishop likes fighting, but only when he's winning. He will quickly leave if he can't see a guaranteed victory.

Bishop is paranoid. This is probably self-evident, but it's the reason he's often so well-prepared even when things don't go to plan.

Bishop genuinely seems to enjoy science. He's shown to be far more lenient with scientist characters than anyone else, and he seems to involve himself in his scientists' projects to a degree. Enough to, at the very least, understand their work. (Given he was the one set to dissect the turtles, it might also be argued he has some medical or biology background, himself.)

Bishop is an opportunist and scavenger. He can roll with failures as long as he can find something to get out of it. If he's presented with an opportunity to stab someone in the back, and he has something to gain? He'll take it without a second thought.

Bishop is deeply self-blind. For all his perceptiveness and strategic prowess, Bishop is not very self-aware in the slightest. He is completely blind to his own hypocrisies, and thoroughly confident in his own righteousness.

Bishop adapts fast. He accepts situations for what they are and acts (Though he may still be angry about them, or what have you.) This is likely a skill developed via longevity; the world around him has changed rapidly, but he doesn't feel out of place at all.

Bishop will take extreme risks and thinks wildly outside the box. Also self-evident, if you're familiar with the plans he enacts throughout the show. He'll put a lot on the line if he thinks the reward is worth enough, and he's willing to go to extreme lengths to get what he wants, even if his plans would be considered crazy by normal standards.

Bishop is persistent. If he wants something, he won't stop until he gets it. If he fails, he'll retreat, make a new plan, and try again. It is very difficult to convince him to back down (and certainly not on moral grounds.)

Habits and triggers I've noted:

Being restrained of any sort puts Bishop in a panic. He is more likely to have an emotional response in these scenarios, and seems to have (an albeit muted) desperation to escape. (See: Leatherhead restraining him in the first encounter; His reaction to being trapped on the surgical table in Head of State.)

When being duplicitous or suppressing a reaction, Bishop will go to adjust his tie. This could possibly be considered his tell.

Bishop seems to have a particular fear of aliens blending in as humans. His slayer project was built around the assumption that this is a common threat. (Worth noting: This makes The Shredder the model of the exact threat Bishop is afraid of. Technically, Bishop himself may also fit the description of a threat shaped like a human.)

Writing considerations:

In 03's narrative, Bishop is EPF and EPF is Bishop. Narratively speaking, any organization Bishop is head of acts as if it is an extension of his will and character.

Bishop is shown to strike fear and/or discomfort into most characters he interacts with. Anything beyond this is an outlier, and will draw a reader's attention.

Dialogue-wise, Bishop is generally succinct and blunt. He does dabble in gloating, though, and especially likes to upset others. If he's given a chance to be mean, he'll usually take it. It can help to consider he has a Mission Mode and a Normal Mode. When it comes to Mission Mode, he gets straight to the point and hates unnecessary talking. Otherwise, he's still not very talkative, but will take the time to make pointed jabs or talk through a plan. A lot of his sense of humor seems to be rooted in how He's Better Than You (And You're Going To Die Painfully.)

It's a common pitfall that Bishop is depicted as seeking out the turtles. In 03, once he gets their DNA, he's done with them. Any encounters after that are incidental. Bishop does not care about anything that won't effect his greater goal. If he's targeting another character, it should have to do with a greater plan.

Bishop is an extremely competent combatant, shown to be able to handle up to 7 opponents at once. For a breakdown on his fighting style check out my other post on that!

Bishop is hard to kill, and oftentimes he accidentally contributes to his own defeat. (The hook from Bishop's Gambit is an example I get a LOT of mileage out of, as a perfect symbol of his self-defeating prophecies.)

We almost only ever see Bishop in the context of his work. While it could be construed that he depersonalizes himself, it's much more clear that the narrative depersonalizes him. As far as we, the audience know, Bishop's work is all that he is.

It's unclear if Bishop was released from his abduction or escaped. Depending on which you ascribe to, this can have ramifications for his mindset on how to deal with the alien threat. (Personally, because so much of his inability to cope hinges on a feeling of helplessness, I believe he was released. If he escaped on his own power, that undercuts it, somewhat.)

Thematically-speaking, Bishop parallels both his own torturers and his own victims at the same time. He has perpetuated the cycle that traumatized him in the first place by trying to fight fire with fire. (In that vein, I don't think he's capable of understanding that, not seeing aliens as people in the first place, just dangers. Considering how deeply ingrained his trauma is in his worldview and actions, it would probably ruin him, if he were ever able to actually grasp it.)

Bishop and EPF are likely a commentary on the military of the time 03 was coming out. This can be something worth keeping in mind, when figuring out his greater themes in your story, though it can just as well be discarded if it doesn't fit.

Adding to that, Bishop has an extensive american military background. His skills and knowledge will reflect that.

Bishop also plays on and references a number of real-life alien conspiracies. It can be worth digging through conspiracy history to drum up ideas and themes, too.

The ethical and philosophical quandaries of Bishop's body-hopping and humanity tend to not hold too much weight, because Bishop, himself, doesn't seem to care.

There are three unspoken rules every scholar in the Akademiya must know regarding Lord Cyno.

Firstly, no matter how bad it is, always laugh at his jokes. Do not, under any circumstances, ask him to explain the joke. Everyone will be forced to listen to an hour long analysis on what the joke is, why it’s funny, and how the sentences leading to the punchline were timed just right that it would—should—leave everyone in hysterics and gasping for breath.

Second, playing the trading card game with him will lead to varying results, usually ones that end up with the other party crying as they leave the table without their pride and dignity. Approach with caution when he has those cards in his hands.

And last, but the most important rule of all, never—and they mean never—speak of your name in a bad light. Anyone who does so can and will be found no matter the place and ears listening, and they will be forced to endure a twelve hour long lecture about the positive traits you possess and how amazing you are in general. It may seem innocuous, but throughout the entire lecture, Lord Cyno will be staring through the poor unfortunate soul and daring them to dispute his claims.

Should anyone be foolish enough as to openly mock you in front of him, they will be met with a polearm to the face and a lifetime’s worth of punishments in the form of only being allotted one hour to do every paper they will ever be assigned to make for the rest of their time as a scholar. If, under any circumstances, the scholar is unable to keep up with their deadlines, they will be kicked out of the Akademiya and labeled as a failure in society.

That one is, in fact, one of the lesser punishments Lord Cyno has met out when it comes to people insulting you with regards to your… less than average intelligence and social awareness. The harsher punishments are not for the faint of heart, and so most senior scholars resolve not to tell the new students what transpires when someone bullies you or—Archons forbid—makes you cry.

There’s a saying in the Akademiya: the fastest way to the Abyss is to make tears appear in your eyes.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the last person who did so was last seen without any light in their eyes. This is not to say that they died, no. They were, according to Lord Cyno’s words, justly and rightly punished for their transgressions against you. Perhaps he went a bit too far, but who are mere scholars to question the judgment of the General Mahamatra?

However cautious they have to be around you, there is one important thing you bring to the table: the secret fourth rule that’s more of an of advice than anything. A secret that’s passed through word of mouth, given to only those they deem worthy.

The easiest way to getting to Lord Cyno’s good graces—and, consequently, an easy path to graduating the Akademiya—is to make you laugh. An easy feat at first glance, but considering your strange humor (as proven by how you’re the only one who genuinely laughs at Cyno’s jokes), it takes a great many nights and brainstorming sessions to find the perfect joke.

But making you laugh poses its own risks. It is common fact among those in-the-know that making you laugh too hard would be a one way trip to marking them as enemy number one in the General Mahamatra’s eyes. He would see it as a challenge in usurping his place as number one funniest person in your eyes.

As of now, there is no clear way to ensure this doesn’t happen, which is why the last rule is a risk taken by only the bravest of souls.

Prompt 15 - Double Fault

Sirius had been booted out of the kitchen by Remus. There were customers waiting, and he didn’t have the luxury of hiding away. So he came back out warily, ensuring that he gave James and Regulus’s table a wide berth. 

The morning rush began to quiet down and Remus came out from behind the counter, bringing a coffee for himself and refills for James and Regulus. He sat down with them and began to have a loud conversation with Regulus. Sirius saw it for what it was immediately. Remus had that mischievous look he only got when he wanted to unleash a bit of chaos into the world. 

“You look exceptionally clean if you don’t mind me saying,” He caught Remus saying to Regulus. Yep, he was definitely baiting him. Sirius took a deep breath and went to clear the tables in the far corner. 

“Oh, yes, the shower at my friend’s flat is outstanding, with plenty of room and perfect pressure. James and I could have had twice as many shower partners in with us and still had room.” Regulus had raised his voice, so there was no escaping the conversation. Sirius shuddered as he swept spilt sugar off the table and into his cloth. 

“Really? Sounds like a very well-thought-out space. I may join you next time if it really is that spacious.” He felt his eye begin to twitch with Remus’s response. The man with the rat phone case was back again. He was very interested in something on his screen when Sirius asked him if everything with his meal was alright. The man had squeaked out a yes and jabbed his fingers at the screen again when Sirius moved onto the next table. 

“Evan and Barty would love that. But just a warning, they are looking for a third,” Sirius saw red. It was as if there was a double fault line beneath his feet as his body began to shake with rage. 

"Twice! Twice you’ve been in here. I haven’t seen you for five years. You come back and the first thing you do is steal my best friend, and now you’re trying to set my boyfriend up?! Nope, you can go straight back to that house of horrors you call home!” He screamed across the small space. His regulars were used to him by now. He swore some of them came in just to see if he’d go off on one. Regulus muttered something quietly that he didn’t catch, and he watched as James wrapped a protective arm around him. 

“Hey, Sirius, stop, yeah,” James said seriously. But Sirius could taste victory. Regulus wasn’t going to win this time. 

“No, he can’t just come here and upset everything then go back to Mumsie and Dadsies as if nothing happened.”

“Hey, sweetheart, let’s stop, yeah. James and Regulus are going now anyway.” Remus tried to soothe him and began to usher him back towards the kitchen away from them. 

He watched as James took Regulus’s hand and led him towards the door. He’d never realised how small his brother looked. 

“Yeah, go on then, baby brother, go on home to your precious mummy and daddy.” He sneered, going for the kill. 

“I can't, they kicked me out,” Regulus choked out, fighting back tears as he spun his head around to look at Sirius. 

Every drop of rage he was feeling evaporated instantly. He’d done it. He’d told them, and they’d thrown him away as though he was nothing. He couldn’t believe it. Regulus had done everything they’d ever wanted him to do. He was their perfect son, and they couldn’t just let him have this one thing for himself? Well, he has me, he thought stubbornly.  

Sirius walked purposefully across the café and wrapped his arms around his little brother. He wasn’t about to let him feel the way he had when he’d left that house. 

“I’m so sorry, Reggie,” He murmured into his hair. Holding him close. By the time Regulus had relaxed into the hug, he’d made a decision. “There's a flat upstairs, above the café. It’s yours if you want it,” It was just going to waste after all and, at least this way, he knew who’d be up there. Regulus was hardly going to steal all their fancy appliances and sell them to some random dude named Ste. 

“Really? You’d do that for me?” Regulus’s face was a mess, but apparently, he still had some energy to drive Sirius mad. “Even if I take James up there to shag?” Sirius rolled his eyes at the tiny smile Regulus gave him.

“Had to spoil this beautiful moment, didn’t you?” He barked a laugh and ruffled Regulus’s hair to get him back. “Here,” He shoved his hand into his pocket and pulled out the keys to the café. He removed the one for the flat and the one for the side door. He held them up and waved them pointedly. “Do not make me regret this,”

That was the moment James decided was the perfect time to add his own contribution to the Lets Actually Drive Sirius insane fund. He picked Regulus up like a newlywed and headed to the door with his parting comment.

“Come on, love. I want to hear more about this shagging. Sounds fun.” 

The café erupted with cheers. Sirius knew he’d done the right thing, but damn, it was a hard pill to swallow. 

“I’m already regretting this!” He shouted after them. But he didn’t mean it. Not really.

I’d really like to write a chreon fic, like a raccoon city if it didn’t go to shit au™️ where Leon is a trans man, and moved there to get away from his small town and doesn’t plan on telling anyone he’s trans/he lives stealth etc. And then he and Chris meet and kinda hit it off, and Chris kinda makes his feelings known, but Leon doesn’t act on it bc Chris doesn’t know he’s trans. So Chris presumes he fucked up a bit and that Leon isn’t interested, but in reality Leon is just scared to come out to him and is very interested

Though I’d want it to be multichapter and slow burn? Because most trans Leon fics are one shots of him getting railed, and that’s fine I like smutty one shots as much as the next guy, but I think it would be nice to have something that’s longer? Though obviously it will contain smut bc it’s me writing it lol, but it would be nice to have it be multichapter and have plot, yknow?

That’s what has been on my mind on and off since the start of the year anyway lol

Read the update to Bloodlines this morning and have been thinking about it all day.

Danny grew a reputation I see, Danny setting assholes straight, he ain’t taking shit from anybody and yet -

I have gotten so used to a dynamic between Danny and Vlad where D doesn’t allow V to push him around or even so much as feel threatened by Vlad that this interaction threw me off so hard

Like! Danny being stuck in such a vulnerable position and taking this kind of abuse - That feels beyond different from the hero/villain scene - ‘cause he feels he’ll cause problems for others is just *screams internally*

It's definitely not a dynamic we see very often, but it's one I thought ought to be explored. We never see Vlad abusing his power and influence as a billionaire in the show, only when he becomes mayor. But realistically, there is a very serious power imbalance between Danny and Vlad in their civilian lives that Vlad could very easily take advantage of. Like he does in bloodlines.

And just like the interaction you see in the newest chapter, Danny admits he could beat Vlad in a fight with ease but the consequences of Vlad's retaliation isn't worth the risk. He not only has to think about himself but also his friends and family.

I also wanted to showcase that there is more than one type of abuse. Yes, Vlad physically abuses Danny when he backhands him in chapter two and grabs him by the hair in chapter six. But he also financially abuses him by hacking into his bank accounts, as is referenced in chapter two. It's one of the reasons why Danny's conversation with Technus in chapter five is so important; it showcases how Danny has to hide all the evidence, in fear of retaliation or punishment.

Vlad has cameras set up all over Fenton Works, and is shown willingness to hack into other cameras when Danny dismantles those. In fact, when Danny goes out of the house, Vlad often times will come back in- whenever he wants, might I add- and replace the cameras Danny destroyed. Danny has little to no personal privacy, and Vlad is shown more than once how he ignores Danny's personal space as well.

I cannot stress enough that Vlad has far more power than most people realize. Had Danny Phantom taken the subject matter more seriously, or had a higher rating, we could have very well seen much worse behavior from Vlad in the show. And this is still the same guy that admits to wanting to kill Danny's father, marry Danny's mom, and has tortured and cloned Danny multiple times.

Between his immense wealth and his powers, no one's ever been able to stop Vlad before. Why would he let some teenager be the first?

All in all, Vlad is a creep and we can only hope Diana and the Waynes learn about his abuse before it's too late. 🤞

"Angry robin" "violent robin" "misbehaving robin" shut up and accept my alternative; spunky Robin. Determined and head strong, can out-stubborn the Batman, has a strong moral-backbone and does what he thinks is right regardless of what anybody else says, Robin. Jason who was sassy and quippy and made crude jokes with a smile on his face. Jason who hid in Bruce's cape and whispered gossip to him. Jason who, if Bruce refused him something, could keep bothering endlessly until Bruce caved. And also dramatic Jason. If Bruce tells him no, it becomes a whole theatrical show; a monologue, a narration, embellishments, and falling onto the floor in his grief upon the fact his cruel father has denied him once again.

(Jason who has suffered through abuse and homelessness and poverty and starvation, who is the Fight out of Fight or Flight, who's built up defenses and walls and when pushed and triggered responds with the thing that's always protected him; anger. He's sweet and kind and funny, and when he sees a pimp hitting a prostitute he gets furious and responds with violence.)

first of all: real and true. its been several years and th madrat plushie still isnt finished being plushie'd iirc. its so funny. second of all: i have Opinions about this topic ok listen ok ok. im going to get a Little annoying abt it. apawlogies.

(so um, obviously, mrd spoilers. im being serious youshould play mrd if you havent already i love it dearly ok. thankyou.)

ilove this funny little game so much and id love to see it mentioned and appreciated more than it is with all of my heart. that being said; we do Not need a sequel. honestly, the dlc route i think would fit much better-- something id personally love to see. because again; the whole Coming To Terms With Death thing. mad rats arc revolves around that! getting to live the way he wants to; leaving his mark in a way he feels satisfied with-- thats the whole Thing. not only this, but heart and rat god's characters revolve around it too-- albeit in a different way.

what im saying is that a lot of the time, whenever ive seen discussion of a theoretical sequel, its always just kinda putting everyone back and everyone lives and thats kind of.. it. its hard to make a sequel to a game like this without kinda intrinsically doing that. but that also completely goes against what the story stands for as a whole. the whole mousewheel metaphor, yknow? it feels like itd kinda render everything mad rat and heart did kind of meaningless. like itd remove a lot of the weight of what the story presents.

what i personally think would really work, in terms of extra story, is something more akin to inter-story expansions. details where there werent things before; stages in between what we see in canon. because there's a Lot of things that simply remain unsaid (which i WONT infodump about here itll be an all day thing; what ill say is that this isnt a strictly negative thing) and being able to extrapolate a bit more on heart's-- and especially rat god's-- characters would be a Really fantastic option. heart, as a lead, gets a lot of introspection and screentime, but he also inherently revolves around whatever mad rat chooses to do. its hard to imagine he doesnt have things he doesn't-- or wouldn't-- express. (i think about how willing he was to die with mad rat; how he immediately followed along with him, supported him. what does this say about heart? who He was before all this? how he was before all this?)

and obviously . rat god. all i have to do is point to If We Could Be Friends. it speaks absolute Volumes about who she is and how she functions Despite her role in the story and how she presents herself. between that and everything at the end of Mad Rat Die, there is so much she simply doesnt express of herself. because she doesnt have to. she's Never had to. so to suddenly have to grapple with what you stand for being (successfully!!!) challenged like that-- listen. she has some Serious traits left unexplained, unspoken. as she is in-canon is genuinely fantastic, if horribly tragic by nature. but getting to see just the Smallest bit more of that attitude shine through with a theoretical expansion would kill.

i love how quiet all that is. it fits her. but to add a bit more definition would be Really great. i want to know how everyone would potentially grapple with that-- how she would grapple with that. what i most strongly imagine is a pseudo-noncanon almost dreamsequence type thing-- things still end the way they do, but it serves to simply allow them to be honest with each other, who they are, and really let them settle what fate chose to do with them. maybe they will meet again, in heaven, in hell.

and how marinettes got her whole "i'm RESPONISBLE!!! for the whole fucking universe now, omfg i'm the reason fu is basically dead" angsty shit going on which kinda parallels peters whole "i have super powers, and if i dont do something to help then its my fault if someone gets hurt, like how my uncle died.
