So! "Off With [the Demon's] Head" was not meant to last 75 chapters. You might notice from one of the earlier A/Ns that it was actually supposed to be ten. Obviously, from the current chapter count of sixteen, it is not ten chapters long. 🤣

On a more serious note, there are many things that I have not told readers. I like to maintain an air of secrecy about the fic, both outside and within the story's universe. And while that's a stylistic choice of mine, it's also because of the personalities involved. In "Off With [the Demon's] Head", Danny has had the need for secrets beaten into his head since the start, although perhaps it's not until Tina's death that he realizes why. Isn't it sad, in a way? For him to continue her legacy?

But here's some mysteries we have yet to solve: what happened to Danny's second sword? Who else felt Ellie's pain? Why can't Danny and Ellie return to the Ghost Zone? What ever did happen to Pariah Dark's core? So far only one person has noticed this: why did Damian forget Ellie's name?

And now this last mystery I'll talk about here. Because I love worldbuilding ftw. I know a lot of people put emphasis on Jason and his death, but Jason is not the only Batfamily member that died. Moreover, Jason wasn't even revived with a Lazarus Pit. However, Damian died. Cass died. Both were revived with Lazarus Water.

Ra's and Talia have died and been revived before as well. Danny can't control them. He can control Jason. So whether Danny can control someone who's been resurrected depends on other factors. Yet Danny can still sense something about them.

Damian has died before. Ectoplasm leaves their marks.

Ellie has ectoplasm.

I can't recall now if I've mentioned this in an A/N previously, but it's going to be a long time before Danny's identity as Phantom is revealed. Well. It's going to be a long time before his status as a halfa is revealed. We have a lot of layers to uncover first.

Danny hides behind so many personalities and masks that Diana and Bruce, and the family at large, have to peel back before we'll actually get to a place where Danny can (or will) reveal his identity. And it's not even strictly with Diana and the Bats that Danny is like this. For the whole of "bloodlines" so far (and quite honestly for most of the story in general), Danny has not been honest with a single person.

The Danny that we meet with Team Phantom is not the same Danny that went to Finn's party and fucked up Frank for harassing those girls. The Danny that went to the police as a favor for Star is not the same Danny that destroyed the GIW base. The Danny that Diana knows is not the same Danny that Bruce knows. You'll even see later on that the Danny the Wayne kids know is not the same Danny that Bruce knows.

So far the person Danny has been the most honest with is Jazz and he is lying to her too.

Danny tries so hard to keep all the facets of his life separate. Contained. He is trying to live five, six, seven different lives all at once and he doesn't want it to bleed together. He wants to have it all but he knows, he thinks, that he can't have it all at once. He can't be a slacker and still be respected. He can't fly under the radar and still have people listen to him.

He's constantly trying to maintain this balancing act with everyone around him. He shows little bits of personality to different people to make them think they're privy to the real thing. He makes them think they're special, that they're in on a little secret that they won't want to share with anyone else. He makes them think he trusts them, that he's lying to everyone else but them, when really he's lying to them all.

It can't last forever. It just has to last long enough.

i was just about to start my reread of it! i love that diana and the bats are trying to figure out how to save danny when its like... hes already sorted all the prophecy stuff out guys now theres other, worse, problems :D

"bloodlines" is a very curious fic because there's just so many layers to it. I honestly couldn't even tell you which plot point I would consider the "surface level", as all threads are tied so intrinsically together.

There is so much that goes into the prophecy and the weight it has on the whole narrative. You mentioned how Danny has other problems now, that the prophecy isn't even a concern for him anymore. But I also like to think that fate cannot be circumvented so easily, so thoughtlessly. That a burden that heavy, that Danny would have been cast to the sea as a babe, that Clockwork would have turned a woman mad for, could be rendered meaningless for so much less? Maybe this is just me and my dramatics but where's the fun in that?

And yet you're still absolutely right, of course. Danny has so many other things he has to worry about. I could go on and on about all the problems he has to solve and contend with on a daily basis. And he's done a fairly good job so far, we have to give him that. But there's no question that he's struggling. That the work is piling up and there's no end in sight. And Danny's just a kid, you know? It's not fair that all this responsibility should be heaped on his shoulders.

It's enough to make a man mad.

anywho, "all I am to you is a tragedy, right?" is my attempt to deconstruct and subvert common tropes about revenge fantasy. It's a complicated play on perspective and morals. It's a fun little introspective piece where we get to explore a Bruce that's been hardened after the loss of a second son.

I just really enjoy playing with the audience's assumptions and preconceived notions about how the characters should act or feel. Because usually in this scenario, where Bruce goes on the deep end to protect what's left of his family, his harsher methods are often celebrated (goodness knows so many people want Bruce to kill the Joker, albeit, granted, he hasn't quite fallen to murder just yet). And yet in "all I am to you is a tragedy, right?" I've noticed many people take on the side of Danny, who is understandably upset to be kidnapped and taken from his family, but is still safer in this new world even if he is at the hands of the man who snatched him away.

Bruce is in the right and the wrong. Danny is in the right and the wrong. There is no one answer to this riddle. Sometimes there is no right or wrong answer. Not every story has a true happy ending.
