I think most movies would be at least five to ten times better if the villain just got a little silly with it
Like I love my tragic villains to DEATH but I miss my evil bitches who were having so much fun being bad, yes queen break out into a killer solo about how you're going to kidnap and murder the protag and how you're wicked as fuck
Need me some villains who dress to impress and just KNOW they're the real star

This question just randomly popped up in my mind, do Ana Brays face markings mean anything? If they do, would you please tell me?
Also would you please, give some interesting facts about Ana Bray? Or any lore including the involvement of Ana Bray?
Thank you!
Nothing in particular on her face markings, as far as I'm aware. We know that she didn't have them before becoming a Guardian, which means she put them on at some point after being rezed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her comic (part 3) also further specifies by showing her without the markings during Twilight Gap:
Tumblr media
But the next time we see her in the same comic, when she's hiding after faking her death, she has them:
Tumblr media
Possibly something to help her hide her identity? She also changed her hair style in the meantime. But we don't really know if they have any additional meaning.
One of my favourite Ana Bray facts was the stuff she was doing before she became a Guardian. I love her talking about her profession:
You can lead a machine to language, but you can't make it think. Well, you can't. But I can. My name is Ana Bray. If you want to insult me, call me a neurolinguist.
Not that it isn't a fine and noble profession, but neurolinguistics is about encoding language. I'm a psycholinguist. I study how language can lead to independent thought.
People don't really see her as a scholar and I've even seen people saying she's not smart, but she is absolutely incredibly smart and educated. Her profession is what led her to teaching Rasputin everything she did, in an effort to teach him not just how to speak, but essentially how to feel and think independently by using language as a base.
These are some older lore tabs that were recently reinforced with some extra details in Season of the Seraph. It's a fascinating read into Ana's expertise and thinking and her work that I've rarely, if ever, seen people mention. I linked the first bit up there, the rest in order: 2, 3, 4 and 5. Favourite part:
Military history, he's been fed by the truckload. But then I started in with operas and symphonies. I don't want him just to think about things.
Humans don't communicate strictly through data. We also communicate through art, through expression. If Rasputin is to be the most effective communications device in the Sol system, I want him to feel things.
Ana was incredible as a scientist and once you know how smart and innovative she is, you can kinda see why she always wanted to return to that passion and learn more about her pre-Guardian life. She even says it in the same comic I linked above:
At Twilight Gap, that Fallen gave me the opening I needed to let the world believe Guardian Ana Bray was dead, so that Doctor Anastasia Bray could finally do what needed to be done.
Another interesting and peculiar less known fact is that Ana was very likely a member of the Future War Cult. I kept seeing that being said, but couldn't figure out where it came from so I went to do a little research. Now for start, Future War Cult wasn't all just bad stuff we remember from Splicer; they were founded by Maya Sundaresh herself and have long lasting ties to Golden Age science and experiments. It might be that Ana joined or cooperated with FWC with that connection to the Golden Age in mind; Ana always knew who she used to be and always wanted to learn more about it. FWC could've been an early attempt to find out.
Back in Destiny 1, there was a mission that had Lakshmi sending you to Twilight Gap as part of the quest to get the exotic No Time To Explain. The quest involved a lot of different missions and included artifacts from Praedyth and Pujari, but also Ana Bray; they were artifacts manipulated by the Vex and time, with links to death. The artifact found at Twilight Gap was Ana's bracelet:
Tumblr media
Upon returning to Lakshmi with it, she says:
Tumblr media
Interesting! She is not only familiar with this, but she also says that the FWC inner circle will be grateful that the artifact has been "returned," sort of implying that it has been there before, with Ana. I wouldn't say it conclusively proves that Ana was a member, as the FWC may have been interested in the artifact purely for research purposes; the quest itself delves into researching artifacts that were pulled from time; Ana's bracelet may have been pulled because of the connection to No Time To Explain and Elsie. It's an interesting quest, if anyone wants to see it in its entirety, link to the only full playlist I could find is here.
Either way, it's a neat little tidbit from the past. I can definitely see Ana exploring FWC for potential links to not just her personal past, but also for the Golden Age in general.

Treasure Planet AU Idea
Where Jim never managed to get the engine started again as he's falling down the crevice at the end...
And he keeps falling, and falling, and falling.
Until the planet explodes and all he can remember before everything went black is the pure terror flooding his heart as he plummeted towards death.
Except it's not death, because he wakes up in the middle of a snow-covered world, dark and gloomy and miserable. He looks around, trying to figure out where in the world he is. It's not like anything he's seen before, and it's horribly cold to the point that he wonders if he'll freeze to death.
He wanders along, watching as the snow around him cleared a little to show a city ahead, with columns of smoke from the factories rising above and glittering lights. Maybe there's warmth. Maybe there's an explanation.
He wanders in, glancing at the signs written in such an odd script he's never seen before, dangling across old shop fronts and painted across windows and banners:
кормить детей!
мир земля и хлеб!
He doesn't know what they mean, or what language it is. It makes no sense. Nothing makes sense and it's petrifying.
After what seems like forever, he reaches a towering palace, a glittering jewel in the heart of a tarnished crown. It's huge with turquoise walls and warm light spilling from the windows. He finds a back entrance and somehow sneaks in, making his way through the winding halls, following the scent of the most delicious food.
He should have known it would take him to a kitchen. A massive one, too. People of all sorts shouting, dicing, mixing, running, all hurrying to get the food done and on the tables. It's a good few minutes before someone notices him standing in the doorway, shivering at the warmth after the bitter cold outside. The chef who notices him beckons at him, speaking rapidly in the sake foreign tongue. He raises and eyebrow, startled and overwhelmed at the whole situation. The chef repeats that statement, more impatient, yet Jim stares blankly back. The chef mutters something then walks over to the boy. He asks something different, something about a Russkiy? And making a talking motion with his hand? Is he asking if Jim speaks their language? The boy shakes his head, hoping his guess in right. The chef stares at him with concern, then says something to his coworkers. Jim is too distracted by the delicious yet foreign food being prepared. It smells like heaven, somehow better than his mother's cooking.
His mother.
He missed her.
He wanted to go back and hug her and apologise for everything, but he couldn't.
The chef got his attention again and pointed to himself, uttering a single word. "Sasha."
A name. Jim pointed to himself. "Jim."
The chefs all shot him confused glances.
"Djim?"
Someone muttered something and someone else laughed.
"Djim... Dim? Dima?"
"Dmitri?"
They all stared back at him expectantly. Dmitri. It must be a name, right? Jim nodded, accepting his fate. He would fix it later. For now, he just needed to remember Dmitri.
Eventually, as time passes, he learnt their foreign language. It was Russian, as they lived in a country called Russia on a planet called Earth, and he was now working in the kitchens of Tsar Nicholas II. Jim, or Dmitri as everyone called him, soon proved to be useful with his cooking and cleaning skills, even if he was still limited in his communication with others.
He did improve; soon it was almost impossible to tell that he hadn't lived there his whole life. He spoke it with fluency, read it easily and even knew a couple of dances. He discovered apples and cherries and borscht (and vodka, though he hated it,) and became an expert in cooking Russian meals.
There was one person who caught his eye. Nicholas had four daughters, as well as a son. The youngest daughter was Jim's favourite. Red hair, vibrant blue eyes and an uncanny vocabulary of practice jokes up her sleeve.
Her name was Anastasia.
She would go missing when Rasputin cursed the family and the revolution killed them all.
Jim went into hiding. He roamed the cities of St Petersburg, stealing and conning to survive. He made a friend called Vlad, who reminded him of Silver, all those years ago when he dreamed of a thousand planets' worth of treasure. Now his biggest dream was getting out of Russia, which was proving very difficult.
Then, ten years after the revolution, there was a rumour in St Petersburg.
Anastasia was alive, and her grandmother would reward 10 million roubles to whoever could find her and bring her to Paris.
Ten
Million
Roubles.
A thousand planets' worth of treasure.
It was like a repeat of the past, except now he needed a girl, not a map. And a music box.
A girl by the name of Anya.

So it's Christmas Eve and I've been having a think for a couple day so I'm gonna ramble for a little bit about my Mianite Anastasia AU.
A slight warning, this AU is gonna be a tiny bit a mess because this is gonna both be based on the animated film and the Broadway musical because I like the musical. So like it's gonna be a weird messy combo but like this is just a fun little AU mostly to get it out my own brain.
Backstory: There has been growing tensions between the God's and their followers have been growing tense. With the threats of the Shadows, as well as the Gods threatening each other, all the champions know something bad is looming just around the corner.
As a celebration occurs that's meant to be celebrating the unity of the people, the currently teenage champions of Mianite sit upstairs discussing the situation. Both Sonja and Tucker knew that things were bad, and that the celebration would be missing some people (notably Tom was never meant to be there, having business in his own home city), but none of Ianitees, not even Lady Ianite herself have turned up. Tucker is kind is annoyed by this, questioning why everyone seems to have given up on the Gods and unity, but Sonja is more sympathetic given the fact that the Gods typically spend more time bickering among themselves than actually helping anyone.
Before this can turn into an argument, the palace is attacked by Ianite, possessed by the Shadows, and her army. With the attackers quickly getting inside, Tucker and Sonja attempt to make their escape, but quickly find themselves hiding from soldiers inside Sonja's bedroom with no where to go. At this point, Capsize emerges through a hidden servants corridor causing some panic since, well, Ianitee dressed for combat. But then Capsize tells them that there aren't any soldiers the way she came and that there's a train leaving to the city where Tom is. Tucker questions why she's helping them, but doesn't get an answer as the soldiers start turning to break the door down. They escape with Capsize promising to stop anyone from following them.
On their way off the palace grounds, Sonja is grabbed by a creature made of Shadows. They manage to fight it off and seemingly kill it, but they're left shaken and running to the train station. They get there just as the train is leaving, crowded with those fleeing. Tucker manages to climb on, but Sonja loses her grip and ends up falling onto the tracks and falling unconscious.
That night, Mianite and Dianite were killed, along with most of their high-ranking followers. While Tucker escaped and was reunited with Tom, Sonja is presumed dead. The once united lands of the Gods became ruled by Ianite, though the places not originally United still remain.
Around a decade later in the city that was invaded so long ago, a rumor has reached the city that Sonja survived all those years ago and that Tucker is offering a cash reward for her safe return.
The Characters:
To start with the main character, Sonja is in the Anya role. Forgotten past, wants to discover who she is, all that jazz.
Capsize is Dimitri, having turned to bring a conartist after quickly disappearing on the night of the attack so what she did wasn't discovered.
Tucker is in the role of the Dowager Empress.
The Shadows are Rasputin.
Redbeard is in Vlad's role.
Tom is in the Sophie/Lily role, though I have no idea if him and Skipper have actually been in any kind of relationship.
And now Jordan. Jordan is mostly taking on the role of Gleb from the musical, chasing the main trio down with the orders to either arrest them or kill them. However, unlike the actual character, Jordan is reluctant to do the task because of Capsize (who he doesn't know is actually Capsize for quite a while, but looks a lot like his missing/possibly dead old friend/crush) and his final confrontation would be with her, where Capsize would also confess that she was the one that let Tucker and Sonja escape.
Obviously this isn't the most fleshed out, but Anastasia is just a little comfort media for me, especially for this time of year, so I wanted to just write a little of the AU I think about every so often.

Entry 22
My name is Calio Caecos, and I’m a Black Rider for Baba Yaga.
And I secretly used to be the ‘Grimm Rider’ for her as well, while stringing Elvana along and swearing myself to her in an attempt to learn her secrets and save Baba Yaga from her trap.
Follow so far?
I still don’t have my memories—and I’m probably never getting them back. But Baba Yaga told me basically everything I needed to know about what happened in the last year.
Anastasia was right. It feels good to finally know the whole truth.
Anyways, starting from the beginning. We had all gathered in the Dancing Hut, and Baba Yaga had addressed us from within the doll she was still trapped in. She told us to take it easy for a bit—Elvana would be expecting us to come straight to her, so we should take a breather. And besides, Baba Yaga needed some time to recuperate some of her lost power.
After some quite literal slapstick (no one would dare refuse an order from Baba Yaga, which led to Nestian slapping Ratibor at her command, and Edeya slapping me), Zorka took Baba Yaga’s doll with her elsewhere to rest. And the rest of us were left to our own devices.
As we milled about deciding what to do, I took note that the trapdoor leading to Vigliv’s grotto had reappeared. It seemed we were being summoned by the fate weaver, this time at the moment we were meant to have met her.
Before I could take the invitation, Zorka reappeared and tugged on my sleeve, informing me that our boss wanted to speak with me when I had a free moment. That sent an icy chill of dread down my spine. After what Rasputin had told me about my past, I didn’t imagine a one-on-one conversation with Baba Yaga was going to end very well for me. I certainly didn’t imagine I’d be smoothing things over with just words as I had in Iobaria.
However, before I could follow Zorka, Aenland was ushering me over to Vigliv’s trapdoor. I figured since she had said ‘whenever I had a free moment’ that speaking with Vigliv first wouldn’t hurt…and might buy me a few more minutes of precious life.
Vigliv greeted us in her usual subdued manner—but there was an ever-so-slight smile on her lips. She was happy to see us again, safe and in one piece, it would seem. She told us that she had a boon for each of us, and that she could also answer any remaining questions we had. She was more at liberty to speak with us now than before, since we were here at the correct time.
I decided to put my fears to rest with definite confirmation from a reliable source: was Master Keisuke planning to kill me? Vigliv told me he was not.
So there we go, I was just overthinking things and being paranoid.
Nestian went next, asking for confirmation that my master had killed his father. Vigliv confirmed this to be true. So, absolutely no doubt now. Not that I’d really doubted it from the moment Nestian brought it up. I already knew he’d killed a member of Nestian’s family and was from another timeline—If Nestian’s dad was murdered while fleeing another dimension then it all lined up.
Vigliv mused on the fact that we’d both asked about the same person, then turned to Aenland and noted that she believed his question would not be about Keisuke as well. Aenland confirmed, asking her how he could break the hold Xanthadon’s Demon Lord has on her. Vigliv told him to remain after we’d left, and she would walk him through step-by-step how to break his hold over Aenland’s drow girlfriend.
Because that’s totally where this is going, right? He breaks her curse, they both kill Treerazor together, and then they live happily ever after or some shit.
Anyways, Nestian and I took our leave while Edeya was asking her question. After we started leaving the first time and got called back to receive our boons from Vigliv (permanent spell resistance—I’m ready to laugh in Queen Elvana’s face the moment she tries to kill me and her spell fizzles.)
Once Nestian and I reached the landing back up in the cauldron room, Nestian placed a hand on my shoulder. He spoke in a serious tone, telling me there was something important he needed to ask me. I felt my stomach drop, thinking this was going to be another conversation about Master Keisuke and Nestian’s family.
Instead, Nestian asked me how to tell Edeya that he likes her.
I admit, I laughed. Not at his request, but just the relief at it being something so simple compared to what I’d been bracing myself for given his tone. I told him that I don’t really think about it, I just do it. Be confident, be yourself, and if the person in question likes you then they’ll respond in kind.
I should have also told him to under no circumstances use pickup lines. Only people without a personality worth carrying a conversation with use pickup lines. But I’m sure Nestian probably knows better…
Anyways, he thanked me, wrote down some notes in a notepad that was adorably tiny compared to his big bear self, and then he wandered off elsewhere. From what I heard from Greta later, it was apparently to go ask everyone else the same question.
I quickly found that I had no excuse not to go meet with Baba Yaga. As if she knew it, Zorka appeared in the Cauldron Room to ask me where I’d like to meet with our Kindly Grandmother. I had no idea so I chose the skull room, because I like the skull room. Then Zorka sent me on my way to go meet with our boss.
I had never felt so anxious in my life. I’m usually pretty unflappable. But I was certain I was a mouse walking right into the lion’s jaws this time.
When I entered the skull room, Baba Yaga asked me if I’d chosen that room to rub it in her face how we’d freed the doll she’d spent centuries torturing—or if I hadn’t considered that and just chose it for the aesthetic. I very honestly told her I’d just chosen it because it fit my aesthetic. Her tone cheered tremendously as she said that was the right answer.
Then she said some things about ‘our plan’, before asking why, exactly, she was still in a doll.
I pointed out that I have amnesia and did not fully comprehend what she was talking about. I had no idea what plan she was talking about, or where exactly it had gone wrong.
She asked if that, perhaps, had anything to do with me fucking her son. I quietly confirmed that might have had something to do with it.
She seemed to calm down, and she asked if I would like for her to shed some light on things, so that I would understand. I agreed. I would very much like to know what had happened to me.
Baba Yaga told me she would start at the beginning—in this case, when I had died the first time, although she noted that she could start with my birth if she wanted. She was aware of me and my childhood in Irrisen, although not even she fully comprehended whatever darkness I had been born with—whatever it was, it was a part of Irrisen itself, and according to her it occasionally lashed out, catching her allies and foes alike.
She skimmed over my time with Master Keisuke—that nasty little thief as she called him. I really should have asked about that, why she and Xanthadon refer to him as a thief. Ah, well. I had other things on my mind.
Then she told me about how I came to her after leaving the Norgorber cult with a mission to assassinate her. I actually did try to assassinate her—in theory.
I grabbed a butter knife from her plate and tried to stab her in the back.
It was never going to work. Anyone with any knowledge of Baba Yaga would know something like that would never work. It was an utterly foolish move—if the goal was actually to kill her.
She thinks I was just trying to endear myself to her with such a bold and foolish move, and I’m inclined to agree. There’s no smart way to go about trying to kill Baba Yaga, but if the idea is instead to try to get on her good side, making yourself a novelty—someone whose first impression is amusing and interesting—would be one way to go about it. It was a risky gambit, but clearly it paid off. I showed up at just the right moment, apparently. Baba Yaga was in need of a ‘secret weapon’ of sorts, and she made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Resurrection for service as her rider.
If I understand the way she worded it, she said she’d resurrect me fully when my service was over. So if I’m correct, my ‘condition’ is because I still owe her my service. She returned me to life enough to serve my purpose, but left me with some lingering undeath that would cling to me until I’d finished my job. I’m not complaining—I would have been a few months ago when I first woke up, but honestly my ‘condition’ has mostly been to my benefit since then, and I’m over my appearance changing.
Anyways, I jumped at the offer, and became the Grimm Rider. Not ‘Grim’, Grimm—apparently it means something back on Earth where Baba Yaga comes from, and the title amused her. I don’t get it, but then, I’d been assuming until now that it was a grim reaper thing and apparently it’s not so I’m just completely out of the loop.
As the Grimm Rider I became a protégé of sorts to her. Until Rasputin contacted her, calling her back to Earth. She went without me, and instead sent me to go spy on the other sibling—Queen Elvana.
So I went to Whitethrone. I used my wit and charm to get in good with the Winter Witches—in particular one Nazhena Vassilanova and her lover Radosek Pavril. I put up with being around the worst people I’d ever met, and did it with a smile, and learned all their little secrets. And eventually I finally secured an audience with Queen Elvana.
And that’s where things get fun.
What is the best way to make a lie believable?
By wrapping it in the truth.
I told Queen Elvana that I was Baba Yaga’s secret fourth rider—the Grimm Rider—and that I’d been sent to spy on her. But that I could tell the way the winds were blowing, and her side was going to be victorious. So I wanted to pledge myself to her, as her Rider, rather than her mother.
Elvana’s a lot of things, but she is—unfortunately—not stupid. She agreed to this offer, but she kept an eagle’s eye on me. She scried on me at random, and kept tabs on me. I had to be cautious and tricky to get away with anything. Such as when I slipped a warning to Cesseer in her bedroom—where there was no chance Queenie would risk scrying on me and catching us in the act.
Then Elvana took me to Earth, and I formally met Rasputin. I was stationed to work with him—which gave me the opportunity I needed to try to learn about the World Engine.
Unfortunately, I learned what I needed to at the exact wrong time. Queen Elvana was scrying on me when I discovered the World Engine’s secrets. And that evening when Rasputin and I were shitfaced drunk, the queen sent him a message that the Grimm Rider was a traitor and had to be disposed of.
Rasputin came to me drunkenly crying over how he was going to have to kill me. So I talked him into believing that if he killed me on Earth, he risked outsiders finding my equipment and asking the wrong sorts of questions—the sorts of questions that would upset Elvana if she found out. And regardless of what I’d done, I didn’t want Elvana mad at Rasputin. So, I suggested a course of action—all for his sake of course. He should send me back to Taldor, far from any of Elvana’s plans, with a contingent of his soldiers to execute me on arrival.
What he didn’t know was that the Winter Portal would be opening in Taldor soon, giving me direct access back to Irrisen. And that I’d squirreled away a scroll of Contingency and knew the resurrection magic necessary to raise myself with it. I just set the contingency for an hour after death so there was time for the soldiers to think I was well and truly dead and leave, and then I would be free to walk right back to Irrisen and figure out a way back to the Dancing Hut and Earth and Baba Yaga from there.
It was a good plan. Unfortunately, there were unforeseen consequences. My magic, and that darkness I was born with, and Baba Yaga’s geass, and the power of being two different people’s riders, and now a contingency—all these together created a clash of energy which wiped out part of my memory, and locked away virtually all of my power.
So there we go. The answer I’d been looking for all along. Why was I missing my memory? It was because I’d set up a suicide by soldier in Taldor to avoid a more permanent death at Rasputin’s hands on Earth.
Baba Yaga scolded me for not warning her about Elvana’s plans when we spoke in Ioberia—although I pointed out that she had said not to tell her anything that would affect the timeline. She countered that Baba Yaga was more important than the time line. Fair enough, if I were in her shoes I’d have preferred a warning, too, but I didn’t know that at the time.
Anyways she let it go without further comment. Instead, she told me that since I had continued my service to her twice over, if I survive the confrontation with Elvana I’ll be rewarded twice over as well. I’ll be granted two wishes when this is all over. The only catch is that the second wish can’t be something to benefit myself.
So before then I guess I’d better figure out a wish for someone else.
I’ll probably talk to Greta about it before then.
I mean I already know what my first wish is for. (I know what my second wish would have been for if I could have used it for myself, but c'est la vie.)
After that nice surprise—and the even nicer surprise that this entire conversation was a net positive and I wasn’t going to get smote by Baba Yaga—I was dismissed and I went to go meet up with the others for dinner.
We waited around for Edeya for a bit, and when she didn’t show Nestian was concerned, considering she already got brainjacked by her mirror twin once already. So Nestian and I went looking around the Hut for Edeya.
We found her in the swamp room, having a conversation it was hard to make out. Unfortunately, the mud was sticky and nasty and I fell, which made Nestian fall on top of me, which alerted Edeya to our approach. She came to meet us, and saw our sorry state.
Nestian asked her who she’d been talking to—considering past occurrences it made sense to be cautious. However Edeya told us it was Illivor, and Illivor popped up and confirmed they’d been preparing something for what was coming up in Whitethrone, which checked out. Edeya correctly surmised that she was late to dinner, so we all headed back.
After dinner, Nestian asked Edeya to join him elsewhere. Edeya tried to pull me along, but Nestian said no, just her. Edeya misunderstood, thinking Nestian was still mad about the whole Keisuke situation (entirely possible, but not the case in this particular situation. He was just trying to ask her out and she was being thick.)
Anyways, I didn’t hear about any tears being shed afterwards, and they were holding hands under the table as if none of us would notice the next day, so I think it totally went well.
The next day we met back up in the cauldron room, called together by Baba Yaga. I tossed the next key we’d acquired into the pot—a miniature of the Dancing Hut that Rasputin had on his person. But we hadn’t found a second key.
Baba Yaga said that was fine. She had hidden the second key where it would be safe—its guardian wasn’t powerful, but it was in a place Elvana would never think to look for it.
At that, Zorka stepped forward and untied her headscarf from around her head, and then threw it into the pot. Then Nestian began stirring, and off we went.
Baba Yaga changed the landing location of the Hut so that we didn’t appear right in the middle of Whitethrone this time. Instead, when we stepped out of the Hut, we were standing on a snowy cliff overlooking the city. A blizzard was kicking up around us.
And ahead of us was Queen Jadwiga—the first of eleven Crone Queens we would have to kill to return Baba Yaga to her full power.
Queen Jadwiga raised a hand in an attempt to draw on her Mythic power from the Torc of Kostchitchi. And then there was a flash. A spectral image of a man in large platemail armor appeared. He placed a hand on her shoulder, and told her that it was time to take a break. Then he called over to us to let her have it.
We threw everything we had at her, remembering all too well the way she’d stalked and hunted us through the core of the Dancing Hut. The way she’d come within seconds of killing me and Edeya, and the way Nestian still bore the scars from that encounter. We didn’t give her a chance to act again once the spectral figure vanished. She reeled in shock from losing her power, and we utterly annihilated her.
After the first queen of Irrisen fell, the blizzard cleared and we got a good look at the city below. Right as a spectral image of Queen Elvana appeared in the sky above the city. She put on this big show of how much she was going to mourn her sister (who, might I remind you, she only just met recently and who is many centuries her senior and who under any other circumstances would have been dead long before Elvana was ever born). Then after telling the city they were going to have a period of enforced mourning, she had a message for us specifically. Since we’d killed a member of her family, she had marked a member of each of our families for death.
Well, fuck.
That absolute bitch.
That is a petty move. I should know, it’s absolutely the sort of thing I’d do in her position. And I am well aware that I’m a petty bitch when I’m pushed.
But if she thinks this will break me—will break any of us—she’s in for a very rude awakening. If she hurts my family, she’s just going to make it personal. I was just doing this because Baba Yaga said to do it. I have a Geass on me, I’ve apparently made a deal with her twice now, and also quite frankly I prefer the world not being a frozen wasteland—just Irrisen can stay a frozen wasteland, thanks. My commitment only goes so far as ‘I’m getting rewarded with a wish and also I prefer the world in an inhabitable state’. If she kills a member of my family, that makes it personal. There will be no escaping the pain and death I will bring down on her head once I’ve decided it’s for vengeance.
I guess you could argue she’s the reason I died the second time and lost my memories so it’s already personal, but eh, she was too many steps removed from that. Sure, she gave the order, but then Rasputin had his soldiers carry it out (with my own help). Now Rasputin, he still got what was coming to him. He didn’t have a backbone to stand up to Elvana, to the point that he’d come crying to me about how he was going to have to kill me. And he kept his own daughter hidden away for fear of what Elvana would do if she knew about Anastasia, but kept right on working with his sister regardless. No…I was definitely right to take out my anger on Rasputin.
…I’m getting off topic. Probably because I don’t want to think about it. They’re just regular people. They don’t need to get dragged into this mess. They shouldn’t. They’re all the way in Ustalav. They’re supposed to be safe from anything that happens here. That was the entire point of them moving so far away. To be safe from the Winter Witches. To be safe from Elvana.
And I just brought it right back to their doorstep. Because I returned to Irrisen, just like they told me not to.
Everything has been going so well! Sure there were some hiccups. I died a few times maybe, and lost my memories a little. But I gained power I never could have imagined, and I met Greta and all the others.
Baba Yaga doesn’t think we have anything to worry about. She said Kyonin, Ustalav, and Taldor are all far enough away that it will take time for them to reach those places. I think we made it from Taldor fast enough. If she’s opened any other Winter Portals it won’t be a problem for her assassins to use them. And that’s assuming they don’t just have a wizard on payroll with a Teleport spell.
But for the moment, only one of us had families in clear immediate danger. Edeya. Her family was in town. If anyone was at risk, it was them.
Although they were also high-ranking Winter Witches, so it’s entirely possible they’re in on it and we’re walking right into a trap. But I didn’t voice that fear. This was, after all, Edeya’s family. It was up to her how we handled them. And if she wanted to try to save them, then that’s what we were going to do.
Edeya prepared a Greater Teleport spell right into Whitethrone. Aenland bowed out, telling us that the city needed hope now more than ever. He tied a bandana around his face like he had the first time we were in town, and hopped on Nevra’s back. Nadya asked to come along, and he pulled her up along with him, and they flew off over the wall together. They’ll definitely draw some attention. Reckless bastard. No wonder the resistance loves him.
Jadrenka disguised herself as a Winter Witch and she, Anastasia, and Dimitri went right in through the front gate. The rest of us—Me, Nestian, Edeya, Greta, Cesseer, and Talsune—held hands, and Edeya teleported us straight to her old home.
Or she tried to.
There was a sound like glass shattering, and laughter—Edeya’s laughter but not coming from her. And all around us the world seemed to break apart, our vision shattering like a broken mirror.
We had fallen right into the Mirror Edeya’s trap.

Okay but actually think about it. There are a lot of parallels between Anya (Anastasia) and Leara (my Last Dragonborn) aside from sharing a similar appearance:
Descended from an Imperial dynasty that ruled for 300+ years: this is very specific . . . Anya is the daughter of the last Romanov Tsar. Leara is descended from the Septim Emperors.
Imperial families had "divine right to rule": the Tsars were autocrats, believing they alone had divine right to rule Russia. The Septims were given divine right by Akatosh through the Amulet of Kingss.
Young girl is torn from her family: Anya's family is assassinated and she's separated from her grandmother. Leara's mother is killed and her father wastes away while Leara is still a teen; also her ancestors were assassinated.
Boy helps her escape: Dimitri helps Anya and her grandmother escape the Winter Palace (film version). Ralof helps Leara escape Helgen.
Spends years on her own: Anya has spent years either a) in the orphanage, or b) working her way from Yekaterinburg, depending on if you're watching the film or the musical. Leara spent twenty five years hiding / on the run after the Great War.
Lives in a regime that wants her dead: Anya lives in the USSR, the founders of which assassinated her family; if they knew who she was, she would be killed. Leara spent a decade undercover in the Aldmeri Dominion; they would kill her if they knew she was a Blade, and if they knew she's a Septim? Game Over.
Does not know/remember her legacy: Anya has amnesia from (head trauma?) the assassination of her family. Leara was not told who she was as her mother died prematurely.
Meets helpful animal companion: Anya meets her puppy, Pooka. Leara meets Odahviing, who isn't a cute puppy, but is really awesome.
Whacky talking animals in a side plot: Bartok, meet Barbas.
Meets and works with people who are on the "wrong" end of the law: Anya falls in with conmen Dimitri and Vlad. Leara works with Delphine and Esbern, two Blades hunted by the Thalmor.
Supernatural force is after her: Rasputin is trying to kill Anya (film version). Alduin wants to eat the Dragonborn:s soul same as everyone else's.
Government force is after her: Anya is being hunted by Gleb after she falls in with the conmen and pretends to be Anastasia. Leara is on the run from the Thalmor, who send assassin squads after her on the regular.
Illegally tries to cross the border: Anya has a passport to cross the Russian border, but ends up having to jump off her train. Leara crosses the border into Skyrim, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that thief over there . . .
Ahem. Anyway.
Supernatural dream like hijinks: Rasputin uses dark magic to make Anya sleepwalk in an attempt to throw her off her ship and drown her; she dreams about her family. Leara uses the Elder Scroll to learn Dragonrend; she sees the Tongues.
Older man teachers her what she needs to know to accomplish her task: Vlad teaches Anya how to be royal, to be Anastasia. The Greybeards teach Leara to harness her Voice and Shout.
Dreams about a tower in a city: Anya dreams of Paris (and the Eiffel Tower). Leara dreams about the Imperial City and White Gold Tower — while Anya's are based on a subconscious memory of her grandmother's promise of "Together, in Paris", Leara's is based on memories as a Blade and from trauma during the Great War.
Has serious trauma: Anya has nightmares about fire and the screams from her family's death. Leara's nightmares are full of fire and the screams of those tortured or killed in the Great War.
Has a family heirloom she doesn't know the true story behind: Anya has a necklace and later a music box that came from her grandmother. Leara has the Hero of Kvatch's katana.
Likes the colors blue and gold: okay this is superficial BUT — Anya wears a blue dress and later a golden gown with a blue sash. Any art I have of Leara usually depicts her in blue or gold.
Must prove who she is: Anya must prove to the Dowager Empress that she really is Anastasia. Leara must prove (through use of Unrelenting Force and then retrieving Jurgen Windcaller's horn) to the Greybeards that she is Dragonborn.
Cold as ice: stories take place in frozen regions — though Anya does travel to the more far temperate Paris.
Stranger in a new land: Anya travels to Paris, France, and learns how different it is from Soviet Russia. Leara enters Skyrim must adapt to their culture and way of life.
Discovers she IS the old imperial heir: Anya really is Anastasia! Leara learns she's descended from the Septims.
Cannot reclaim her rightful throne: Anya chooses Dimitri over being recognized as the Romanov heir. Leara can't reconquer an empire (or can she?).
Defeats the bad guy (supernatural): Anya defeats Rasputin (film version). Leara defeats Alduin.
Defeats the bad guy (government): Anya talks Gleb down and he returns to Russia, claiming there "never was an Anastasia" (musical version). Leara temporarily subdues everyone through "Season Unending" before joining the Civil War effort.
Grandparental figure: Dowager Empress Marie Feodorivna. Paarthurnax!!!
Runs away: ultimately, Anya runs away with Dimitri. Leara has a long history of running.

← ONCE UPON A TIME WAS A LONG TIME AGO →
Everyone knows of the Romanov Empire and their subsequent fall from favor. History has not painted the vampire faction in a favorable light ever since their demise. When they were first formed, the Romanov’s were known for decadence and luxury. They weren’t as generous with that luxury as some would have liked, but the Empire wasn’t interested in feedback. Instead, they ruled with an iron fist. At the head of the Empire was Nicholas Romanov and his wife Alexandra. Although Nicholas was a kinder leader than his father had been, it wasn’t enough. The vampire community was in turmoil and the arrival of young upstart Otis Boogie only intensified that.
Nicholas and Alexandra were warned that things were getting bad, but there was little they could do to protect their family. It was in the dead of winter that Otis struck. He sent vampire assassin Gregor Rasputin to kill the Alexandra, Nicholas and their five children. The Romanov’s tried to run, but Rasputin rounded up Nicholas, Alexandra, Alexei, Olga, Maria and Tatiana. The Romanov’s didn’t turn their children until they turned eighteen, so Anastasia and Alexei were human still. Rasputin was ruthless and staked the family through their hearts. It was only then that Rasputin realized the young Romanov daughter Anastasia was nowhere to be seen. Otis and Rasputin looked high and low for the girl but it was like she had disappeared. Eventually, she became somewhat of a mystery. Did a Romanov remain? Was Anastasia out there? Nicholas’ mother, Marie Romanov, longed to find out. She had survived the massacre due to being at the other Romanov home and was now without family. As decades passed, however, no sign of Anastasia emerged and people gradually began to forget about the Romanov Empire.
Anastasia had survived, however. In all the turmoil and confusion she had escaped through a secret entrance with the aid of a young boy who worked for Nicholas. The boy and Anastasia had been separated in the chaos and Anastasia had fallen in the crowd and hit her head. She was later found and taken to the local hospital. Although Anastasia couldn’t remember who she was or what had happened due to the head injury and the trauma, a nurse recognized her as Anastasia. In an attempt to save the life of the child, she quickly sent her away to live with an elderly woman on the edge of town. Told that her name was Anya, the missing Romanov stayed with the old woman until her guardian death. She was then moved to the Darling Home for Wayward Children.
Enough time had passed since the fall of the Romanov’s that no one paid the scrappy newcomer much attention. Anya appeared unremarkable to most and that stopped anyone from figuring out she was former royalty. The hole in her memory always haunted her, however, and Anya grew up longing for a home and family she never had. For as much as she knew, her life had begun the day she had been dropped at the hospital. Anya had no last name and no past. She was a blank book that was desperate to be filled.
When Anya turned eighteen, she was no longer allowed to stay at the Darling Home. As Anya moved out on her own, she became determined to finally find out what had happened to her. The first thing she needed was a job. Knowing it would get more opportunities, Anya convinced a vampire to bite her so she could transform. Her next step was to get a job at the Hunter’s Tavern so she could talk to as many people as possible to see if anyone had some semblance of a clue as to where she came from. She began to think her search was destined to fail when she heard of a vampire named Dimitri Volkov. Dimitri was looking to cash in the reward Marie Romanov had put out for whoever could find Anastasia. His plan was to audition young women who could potentially be Anastasia. Anya didn’t know about that. She just knew that Dimitri was good at helping people find things out and getting places.
It was through Dimitri that Anya met his friend and work partner Vladimir Vasilovich. Vlad and Dimitri had been in the Anastasia scheme together, and they saw potential when they saw Anya. They explained to Anya how the gaps in her memories could mean she was Anastasia, and while she was hesitant to believe them, the idea of having a past and a family was incredibly appealing. Anya decided to try and work with them to see if she was Anastasia, not knowing that they were using her for the reward. The more Anya began to study the Romanov’s and Anastasia, the more things clicked into place. Soon, she began to believe she was Anastasia.
Once Dimitri and Vlad believed Anya to be ready, they introduced her to Sophie Smirnov. Sophie was the cousin of Marie and her trusted advisor; no one who claimed to be Anastasia could meet Marie without getting to Sophie. Luckily for Anya, she was a former flame of Vlad’s and they were able to meet her. Anya dazzled Sophie and convinced her she was Anastasia, but Sophie regretfully informed the trio that Marie was no longer seeing any Anastasia’s as she could no longer stand the heartbreak. Dimitri, who now believed Anya was Anastasia, pushed for an audience with Marie until they were successful. He had been the boy who had helped her escape the massacre and now realized she was Anastasia. When they met the elder vampire, however, she rebuffed them and called them out for trying to get the reward. Anya learned of Dimitri’s original true intentions and was heartbroken.
Although Anya feared she was just as lost as she had been since she was recovered, she still found herself meeting again with Marie. When Marie realized the locket Anya had was the key to Anastasia’s music box, the two shared a moment before Marie finally embraced her long lost granddaughter. Now knowing who she was, Anya was faced with the reality of what had happened to her family and the fact that her life was still in danger. Upon learning that Dimitri hadn’t taken the reward money, Anastasia found him and the two confessed their feelings.
Anya now finds herself at an intersection. Should she choose to go public with her identity, it’s incredibly likely that Otis and Rasputin will attempt her life once more. She has the option to stay silent, but knowing what tragedy befell her family is hard to stomach. Somehow, local revolutionary Jack Spencer heard of Anya’s situation and approached her. He offered her protection if she also went against Otis. Dimitri has promised to support her no matter what she chooses, as has Marie. After being lost for so long, being found is harder than Anya expected. She wants to do right by her family but she also doesn’t know if it’s feasible. Going up against Otis is incredibly daunting and she knows that Rasputin is itching to finish the job he started. All she can do is trust her heart and hope it doesn’t fail her now.
←  & THEY ALL LIVED HAPPILY NEVER AFTER →
✴ DIMITRI VOLKOV was supposed to help Anya find her family, and he did just that. When he first proposed that she — an orphan with no past — was practically royalty it was enough to make the cynical girl laugh. In the beginning, the two constantly butted heads until the day she found him more endearing than insufferable. It turns out Dimitri was the boy who helped Anya escape the night her family was killed, and it took over a decade for the two to connect once more. Anya knows Dimitri is on her side no matter what his initial intentions were. Life will be more complicated if she comes out as the Romanov survivor, but Anya is determined not to lose him. They’ve been through too much together.
✴ MARIE ROMANOV is the only family Anya has left. Anya was never interested in the remaining Romanov fortune or the name. She only wanted someone who loved her, and Marie does just that. While her grandmother would love Anya to be with her, Anya has been told repeatedly it’s okay if she can’t step forward and wants to live anonymously. Marie is the key to Anya’s past. She needs to figure out what that means for her future.
✴ GREGOR RASPUTIN is the one who eliminated the Romanov family, and even though she’s never met him his name sends shivers down her spine. No one has seen him in a decade, but there’s rumors that he’s still alive. If that’s true Anya knows he very well could be coming for her. Anya doesn’t want to admit to being scared, but Rasputin does have a reputation and a massacre under his belt.
← CASTERS & WEREWOLVES & VAMPS! OH MY!  →
✴ THE ROMANOV EMPIRE has been gone for a long time. Anya knew of it growing up but never knew her place in it all. Now, she remembers her past and the family taken from her. As a vampire with a famous last name, there’s a lot Anya could do to rally the vampires against Otis. Even if the Romanov’s weren’t loved, enough time has passed that they’ve become martyred. Anya can play a role in the vampire uprising if she wants. Emphasis on if.

April 2023 round up
3rd concert of the year: Epik High!
Tumblr media
(Look at how happy Mithra is right before he slaps us all in the face with water.)
Tumblr media
Pretty sure this concert is where I caught The Worst Cold Ever (not covid, not the flu, not anything else — “just” a cold). It knocked me out for a week, I lost my voice, and weeks later I’m still dealing with an annoying cough that is getting better but Won’t. Go. Away.
At least the Worst Cold Ever made me hyper vigilant about wearing a mask in public again, even if I’m definitely in the minority these days.
At any rate, I wore a mask to Anastasia: The Musical. I was obsessed with the movie when I was younger (shout-out to the mid-90’s cartoons creating strong female characters!) so I was excited to finally see the Broadway production, after missing it the previous times it came though town. It was… fine. I enjoyed it. And I understand the reasoning behind making it more realistic and historical, but tbh a talking bat makes everything better (a zombie Rasputin, on the other hand…)
Tumblr media
Then I attended my 4th concert of the year: PIXY! I think I would have had more fun if I wasn’t still dealing with the exhausting cold and cough, but it was still fun and they were adorable and even if my two favorite members are no longer a part of the group, the new dynamic works well and everyone should stan PIXY.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Media I have consumed:
Taskmaster (Aus) S1. It was fine. I liked the Toms, but the tasks and the contestants just didn’t fully work for me, which is weird, because I’m pretty sure the task-writing team is the same as the NZ team, and I loved those seasons. So maybe I just don’t understand Australian humor? But I did really enjoy Danielle — she was my favorite by far and who I felt “got” the spirit of what Taskmaster is all about.
Taskmaster (UK) s15. This cast is utterly delightful. I only knew Kiall from Ghosts (oh hey sometime I should mention how much I love both the BBC and CBS versions of that show), but I quickly fell in love with all the others and their respective personalities. It’s magic what the casting team does when assembling five disparate people each season who both must work against each other to win prizes but also must work together as entertainers.
Schmigadoon s2. Or should I say, Schmicago? Much like Melissa, I prefer the golden age of musicals and am way less aware of the era of Sondheim and Schwartz and all those Fosse poses. Yet I am somehow enjoying this more than the first season (which I loved)?
BONUS MENTION because I’m not really sure WTF I’m watching and it’s only halfway aired, but I am mildly obsessed and utterly bewildered and I need to know if anyone else is, too: Mrs. Davis. I can’t even begin to explain this show. But go into it with an open mind and see if you don’t become a little bit obsessed, too.

Eliza!
Hi, jelly here with important question.
How do you feel about the movie Anastasia?
Do you think that villain song is so damn good?
Tumblr media
Jelly I am so sorry I kept this for a few days because I had a brain freeze trying to figure out if I could tell you how much I love this movie!
I played it ALL THE TIME as a youngster. The music, the story, the plot, I loved it!
You know for a while I thought it was a Disney movie because as far as I was concerned at that time every animated movie was a Disney movie and it came in the same case as they did.
But I realize it might've had something to do with the fact that Don Bluth directed and he did a lot of the non Disney movies I watched as a kid (Land Before Time!!) AND he used to work for Disney.
More rambling below the cut! (tumblr deleted some of my stuff and I had to do it over! hjkjlklrhjfbndfnrutu!)
In the opening seeing Anastasias relationship with her grandmother was very special. Then to see Rasputin who has a bit of a Maleficent vibe coming in, and then he sold his soul?! You knew nothing good was coming! I was so saddened when Anastasia didn't make it on the train with her grandmother :(
Tumblr media
Time jump to little orphan Anya who still has her necklace. I loved Anyas attitude and singing voice and ad libbed all the lines I could once I learned them and as a kid tried to hold the last note in Journey to the Past.
Tumblr media
And Once Upon a December, when she's in the Winter Palace and things seem a little familiar to her, and she dances with those long gone. UGH it's beautiful and heartbreaking. She'll never see them again!
I'm gonna have to slow down on the gifs for a sec LOL!
Enter Dimitri and Vlad, loveable and snobbish (one of them, at least) conman who find their girl! Because she looks exactly like an adult Anastasia of the little girl in the portrait that still hangs there!
Tumblr media
And THEN, as they go off together, we meet Rasputin again who is still hellbent of destroying all the Romanovs so he sends demons to do his bidding! Rasputin himself is hella creepy but I can't say this is my favorite villain song ever. It's very good though!
Tumblr media
So can I just say the banter between Anya and Dimitri is some of my favorite of ANY movie. The childish gestures and whole "fine, I'll be quiet if you'll be quiet."
And after she asks if he'll miss his home, he's still going on about their argument and instead says "miss what, you're talking" AH SO cute!
Then she punches the crap outta him (by accident? LOL) when they need to get off the train and very quickly they realize they need to shut up and work together to get off what is now a runaway train.
The song Learn to Do It is really fun and all of a sudden she might remember something that she wasn't told to do or say by Vlad or Dimitri!
Tumblr media
(there's like 2 other gifs I also wanna use here but I don't have enough room LOL) And THEN, Jelly, this scene. It's all downhill from here and even Vlad knows it. UGH it's so pretty I WANT it! They get close and when Rasputin tried to kill Anya himself Dimitri literally swoops into action to rescue her! And she herself is overwhelmed by everything and remembers the Romanov curse.
And soon we're off to try to impress Sophie so she'll let us meet with empress Marie and it's going well until it isn't, but Anya suddenly remembers exactly how she got out of the palace as a child and Dimitri is there to hear it?! He knows! The jig is up!
The man can't really even have fun wandering around Paris while everyone else is thrilled!
Tumblr media
Then it's the night of the meeting and Dimitri is stunned by Anya and they have a couple nice moments and share some looks!
But then Anya learns the truth of how this whole thing started and slaps him again! Granted, he had it coming.
Tumblr media
But he does the unthinkable and kidnaps the empress and risks everything just so that she will meet Anya because she IS Anastasia! And somehow she agrees to it and after realizing that they ARE family, she has to tell Anya that Dimitri didn't take the money! *sobs*
He's ready to leave it all because Anastasia has been found and reunited with her grandmother and why would he want the money anymore?! WHY? Marie knows why :D
And when Anya is trying to figure out if she wants to be Anastasia or Anya, Dimitri is still close by making sure she is save from Rasputin and between the two of them (and Pooka) they finally get rid of him!
And then she smacks Dimitri again! LOL
Tumblr media
And then she makes her decision, it's her and him, and that she and her grandmother will still have their relationship.
Tumblr media
And did I mention I LOVE THIS MOVIE?!
I'm mad I can only include so many gifs. LOL ones not included are Dimitri pushing young Anya out of the palace, meeting again in the Winter Palace, saving each other on the train, another scene of them dancing, hugging after Anya wakes up from her dream, Dimitri realizing he was the boy who saved her, meeting on the staircase during the opera, her slugging him!...and that's all I think.
Okay so THAT was a novel and I am open to talk about this movie anytime!! <3

Corus realizes his feelings
Corus is smart but dumb and realizes things. Also thanks to everyone who's enjoyed my writing hope you keep liking the random stuff my brain spits out <3
Corus Realizes His Feelings
Corus could barely contain his excitement. His little roommate had still been reluctant to spend much time with him, but he found something she was curious about. Movies. She’d never seen one and had mentioned being curious to some of the ones he’d watched before he found her. He would make this perfect, they would watch movies all day and she might actually relax around him. He grabbed the pillow he’d bought for her, this was the best place for her to sit after all. Placing it carefully on the table, he’d put some pillows on the ground for himself. He wanted to be close in case any of the movies scared her.
Once the room was set he went to the kitchen to get some snacks. He wasn’t sure what she had tried so he got a normal movie fest set up. Some candy, popcorn, soda, the works. Although he put together a collection of foods he knew she’d eaten before in case she hated the snacks. She would never ask if she wanted something else. He was careful about placing them out, a few popcorn kernels placed on a napkin on the pillow. He added a little of each type of candy and set the bowls and bags on the floor. He didn’t want her nervous about him reaching into a bowl or bag. He checked the time, there was only a few more minutes before she was supposed to be showing up, although she might already be nearby. He was just about ready to sit and wait when he realized he forgot to bring a cup for her.
He ran back to the kitchen grabbing the doll cups he’d ordered. She was annoyed at first, saying she didn’t need his help, but he wanted things to be easy for her when around him. He tried to keep his pace steady as he rushed back to the coffee table. He couldn’t let anything go wrong today, he’d make sure to focus on light hearted movies and then next time he’d explore with her more. He carefully placed the cup down and took the seat he set for himself just to the side of where Mira’s pillow was on the table. He didn’t want to make her feel crowded. He took one last look around before finally trying to relax. The two were just going to watch some movies, nothing to worry about.
He didn’t have to wait long before he heard a small noise. He tried to be casual as he looked over and saw her fish hook on the table edge. He had been pretty sure she was nearby waiting for him to stop rushing around, here was his proof. He blushed a little, she must have been watching for most of it. He was glad too, she came up as soon as he seemed settled so she must be starting to trust him more. He didn’t realize he’d been staring at the spot she’d appear until her lavender hair popped up over the edge. He knew she’d notice him turn away, but couldn’t help it. She hated him staring, but his eyes always found their way back to her.
“Quite the set up,” she said. She had made her way over to the pillow looking around at everything he’d placed on top.
“Had to make your first movie marathon the best,” his excitement bleeding out of his words. “So Mira, you said you’d seen parts of some movies, any you want to describe to try and start with?”
Mira carefully climbed on to the pillow, trying to avoid jostling any of the food, “There was one you had on a lot, there was music in it.”
“Oh, sure I’ll put that on,” he said, a little embarrassed. Sometimes he forgot Mira had been around long before he’d found her. She probably heard him the times he’d put on kids movies to sing along to while working on something. He assumed she’d meant Anastasia, it was one of his favorites growing up. At this point, he knew the story and all the songs, mostly using it for white noise. He couldn’t help his desperate hope that Mira would like it too.
He let himself focus on the movie, trying to just wait for Mira to comment, but by the time Anya met Dimitri his eyes had drifted. Mira sitting on a pillow on a coffee table felt surreal. She could fit in one hand and yet from the second they, officially, met he’d been borderline intimidated. Even on the table that day, she seemed to radiate this energy that she could handle anything. He smiled, thinking back to when he found her asleep by the kitchen sink. He didn’t fully believe she was real until then. She looked so fragile, nothing like the person who’d been ready to try and climb down smooth wood.
He still can’t believe she ever lets him hold her. The first time he thought she might have been hurt and he made it worse. All he can think of when she’s in his palm is a porcelain doll. They’re beautiful and fragile, how she appears if you go by just looks. That’s probably the best way he could describe her to anyone without revealing much. She’s pale enough to be one too in all honesty. She looks like she should stand out and yet he’d only found her by chance. He couldn’t help but feel lucky.
He couldn’t bring himself to stop watching her. She was focused entirely on the movie, it didn’t even seem like she was on edge about him. She seemed to put so much trust in him, he just wanted to make sure she never doubted it. Pushing his thoughts away, he tried to just focus on the movie, listening while watching Mira. As he slowly gathered what was happening, he realized his mistake in following through on this choice. It was a children’s movie with a relatively scary villain who was reckless and rough with his treatment of the small creatures around him. As the scene revealing Rasputin’s return began he could feel his pace pick up, this could be a setback.
He kept his gaze locked onto Mira, waiting for her response. He expected fear, a betrayed look, something blaming him, instead he saw her stiffen. She relaxed once the scene began to end, but seemed on edge still. He had messed up, he ruined the whole day. He picked the worst movie, he should have picked anything else. A horror movie would probably be better than this. He kept a close eye on her, turning his head back to the movie to avoid it being obvious. He was expecting her to start inching off the pillow, to be ready to run. He looked to the edge she climbed up and froze, her hook wasn’t there. He knew this table wouldn’t let it fall. Did she take it with her to the pillow?
“Mira,” he asked, wincing when he saw her jump, “do you want something to drink? I brought some of the cups out.”
“Sure,” she answered. He couldn’t believe how calm she sounded. He passed her one of the cups he’d bought her, watching closely for any nervousness. Once he’d poured some of the soda into his own cup, he put it near the pillow so she could scoop some out.
“I don’t like that Rasputin guy. He’s just cruel,” she said as she crawled over to the pillow edge.
“I don’t think anyone does. He is the bad guy.” Corus answered with an awkward laugh.
“Good. The others seem like they’d be humans like you.”
Corus felt his eyes go wide, humans like him were good, right? That meant she thought he was a good human. That means she must actually trust him. He couldn’t fully understand the feelings he had from those words. He was positive she’d hate him, connect him to the bad guy and never come out again. He just let himself accept the relief and tried to focus on the movie again. Although he wound up just staring at Mira more. Taking in her reactions to each part and just barely stopping himself from trying to comfort her when he saw her go stiff. He only realized the movie ended when she turned to look at him.
“So what did you think?” he asked. He desperately hoped he seemed casual and it wasn’t obvious he had barely taken his eyes off her.
“The music was pretty, I get why you sing them a lot,” she said, making his cheeks flush. “That one early, with December, I liked that one a lot. The bad guy was awful. I'm glad he’s gone.”
“So overall you liked it?”
“I think so.”
“Do you want to watch another one?”
Mira took a moment to think, and he panicked a little. She could have just stayed to seem strong. He should probably say he can’t. He could also just pick movies without villains like this one. Maybe just do some romantic comedies instead. He could also just show some simple cartoon movies, ones without any characters close to her size. He could also pick ones where giants get killed, maybe she’d like that, although it could give her ideas.
“Are there others with music like this?” she asked, he melted at the hopeful look in her pink eyes.
“Yeah there’s plenty more, I know a few I think you’d like,” he smiled quickly, switching to a somewhat softer movie he tended to watch. The afternoon went by in a blur after that. He had mild panics when he thought a scene might scare her, but overall she seemed to enjoy each one. It did seem like Anastasia might be her favorite of the day. He was ecstatic she loved the same one he did. He didn’t want today to end.
“I should go back, I have things to take care of,” she announced, standing and stretching before jumping off the pillow. He tried to hide how sad he was, today was better than he’d imagined. He wanted to spend more time with her.
“Well let me know if you want to do this again, movie marathons are always fun,” he gave her the best smile he could muster.
She walked to the table edge placing her hook and turned to start climbing down, “I think I’d like that.”
She was out of sight before he could say anything. He could have called out, but decided to leave it and respect the idea that she’d ‘left the room’. He waited a few minutes so she could be safe before cleaning up, his mind taken up by the day. He still didn’t understand why being called a good human made him almost giddy. Thinking back, he didn’t understand why he was so nervous for this movie marathon either. He just wanted to let her relax and enjoy some movies, there wasn’t a reason to be nervous.
The clean up went fast and he went straight to bed. He fell onto the bed, his eyes locking on to the discolored patch on the wall. He could have felt relieved because she finally considered him good, although that didn’t seem right. He tried to decipher it, this wasn’t just a clear or clearing conscience. He felt as nervous today as he did for his last date, but that didn’t seem to match up. He was nervous Mira wouldn’t have fun, not that he’d mess up like back then. That line of thought wasn’t helping him figure it out, he wasn’t sure why he made that connection in the first place.
Mira was beautiful, brave, strong, and in rare moments she seemed fragile. He hated that she didn’t seem to want to stay near him. Today he was desperate to just reach out and hold her. He wanted to protect her, maybe that was it, just a need to keep her safe. Although she didn’t seem to need any help to take care of herself. She was amazing as far as he was concerned. If he didn’t see her first hand he wouldn’t believe she wasn’t the same size as him. He couldn’t really get her out of his mind most days. He just stared at the wall for a while trying to think of what this could be. After what felt like hours, his eyes went wide and he rolled on to his back. He put his arm over his forehead, the realization feeling like a truck crashing into him.
“There’s no way,” he murmured. He wanted to laugh at how absurd it was. He might actually have a crush on the woman who lives in his walls. Hell he might even love her. He had no idea how to handle this, she already had a weary view of humans. If he said anything she might just think she couldn’t say no. He would just have to get her to believe he’d never do anything to hurt her. Eventually she may stop seeing him as a threat and he could be honest, for now he would just ignore what he felt. He might even be reading into it, he never really felt something like this for someone before.
Corus tried to push the thoughts from his mind, focusing on sleep. It didn’t work leading to an early start he didn’t want. He was half awake as he walked into his kitchen, starting some coffee to help him through the day. He was lost in his thoughts again, jumping a bit once he saw Mira. She didn’t seem like herself, more reserved. He assumed she had trouble sleeping too, maybe thinking about the movies.
“Thank you for yesterday,” she said, but she sounded off. “I, uh, could I watch that first one again?”
“Yeah if you don’t mind using my tablet in my room, you can watch others you think might be interesting while I get some work done too.”
She nodded and quickly moved out of sight again. He never really understood why she’d be fine some days, and terrified again the next. He sighed as he finished making his coffee. He walked slowly to his room, in case Mira popped out again for some reason. When he walked in she wasn’t there yet, so he pulled out his tablet opening his streaming app and set it to sit up in front of Mira’s pillow. He sat at his desk quickly connecting to the network so he could help her get comfortable before starting his day. He didn’t want her to be stuck waiting on him.
“Is this really all right?” her voice was meek, he wondered if she wound up changing her mind about who he reminded her of..
“Yeah it’ll help me focus too,” he turned to give her a smile and paused. She had a piece of fabric wrapped around her shoulders he didn’t recognize. It didn’t come from anything he owned, and didn’t match what his grandmother used. “Are you cold?”
“Wha-?” her brows furrowed, she gripped the blanket closer only then seeming to realize. “O-oh, no I, um, it calms me down.”
“Did something happen?” Mira flinched and he felt like an idiot. She didn’t like it when he asked her about her life in the walls. She would quickly leave after as if afraid he’d do something.
She looked away, and he opened his mouth to try and fix this when she spoke up, “I had some nightmares, they just happen sometimes. The movies seemed like they’d help me stay distracted. I didn’t have a lot of thoughts other than the movies yesterday. I uh...”
“Well let me know if you do need anything. I’ll listen if you want to talk about it.” He smiled and she gave a small nod. He wasn’t going to make her explain anything she didn’t want to. She quickly climbed from her spot near the edge of the bed onto her pillow and looked at him. He nearly hit himself in the head, of course she doesn’t know how it works.
“You can just press it like this,” he said and slowly reached over to hit play. She nodded and focused on the movie, he’d help her all day if she needed. Work wasn’t usually hectic, and he could work some late hours. He felt that almost giddy feeling again, her telling him what’s wrong was new. He turned to focus on his work, letting himself focus and just listen to the movie as it runs. Once it ended, he waited a few minutes before turning to see if she needed help. He smiled when he saw she’d fallen asleep, carefully he grabbed the blanket he kept nearby for her and laid it over her small frame.
Corus had to accept it, he was at the very least falling for Mira. Honestly days like this were more than enough for him. If he could be someone she could go to, that's more than enough. At least that’s where he’ll stay for now and if he ever says anything, well hopefully she’ll know that he won’t force anything on her.

TATIA DI DOMINICI, The Governess
“God will surely help us and we will meet again in better times.”
Tatiana Nikolaevna Romanova, Grand Duchess of Imperial Russia
A Drifters assassin rescued and under Saint Germi along with her siblings tasked to eliminate the ENDS to rescue Anastasia from Rasputin.
Her in this fanfic: was unknowingly taken back into their world in the future and was fostered by Lys and was nicknamed as “Tatia” after “Tatya”
Mistaken for “Coldness” Shy, Beauteous, Reserved, A Dutiful maiden.
Occ: Trained Nurse/Medical Frontliner/Di Dominici co Matriarch
One of the main characters for my HellDrift fan manga, She serves as the “Governess” amongst the Di Dominici siblings, and would nurture them with care. Somehow what a “Motherly figure” to her younger siblings (and Jeanne/Jou), she ensures that all of her siblings (Majorly Alexei and Lys with Toshizo) are smartened up in a way possible despite the siblings treated her only as a sister. When Toshizo, Ollia, nor Lys couldn’t lead, she handles her job to lead and ensure that she encounters every obstacle possible. Due to her expertise as a nurse during the First world war, she and Toshizo had to track down the source used for the vampirization of the Millennium soldiers through the chips before their nemesis used the DNA of the charred soldiers during the Zeppelin Incident, Including some in the medical field who are trying to use their methods and the remains alone as a turning point towards crime.
She and Olga/Ollia were labeled as “The Big pair” by their late parents, and is Ollia’s closest confidante whenever her sister’s a bit moody, she’ll be there to talk it out and comfort her. And that goes to the rest of her siblings. Second to Lys, they shared their hobbies in terms of fashion and housework and is aware of Lys’ illness besides her Brother’s haemophilia which had to be dealt by medicine (via Alucard or Saint Germi themselves since they disown Grigori Rasputin from their lives he influenced Anastasia to destroy humanity.) much alike to her mother whom she was really close with in terms of beauty and personality mistaken as “cold and haughty” she along with her siblings longed for life outside the social circles defined and protectiveness from her mother to which affected their behavior in socializing, she was friendly, charitable and sociable besides her sister, Maria. As a modeled beauty befitting for a Grand Duchess herself, there were cracks in her perfection. Not long Ollia, Shvybz and Lys’ boisterous behavior nearly influenced the graceful daughter of the Tsar, she had to fight to break out of her shell and explore the philosophies of what it’s like being a decent human outside of the splendor she had in her life.
Not for long, Tatia, like her mother and Jeanne herself, as both were deeply devoted to God and saw her faith as a duty rather than passion itself, after learning about what Grigori Rasputin has done to her family, especially Anastasia, her eyes were opened and knew the truth along that had clouded in her mind for so long; That piousness has limits alone that could easily blind a person as there as there would always be false prophets like him using the name of God to bring people to their intimate doomed fate. And that no other hero or saint is pure as the white snow in their legacy throughout history itself.
(NOTE: again, Tatia besides her Drifters side was her disguise outfit after Lys killed her executors in the castle, she exchanged her clothes of that of her alleged killer so that she and her siblings could escape at the hands of their nemesis.)

Anya
FC: Sophie Skelton
Tumblr media
Name: Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova
Titles: Grand Duchess
Nicknames: Anya, Nastasia, Shyybzik, Shyybz
Age: Thought dead at 17; in her 20’s in the 1920’s (rest is verse dependent)
Personality: Known as the energetic and comedic Romanov, Anastasia loves to cause mischief and tell jokes. She had a great imagination as a child and is still able to come up with stories to tell every now and then. Witty and playful, she quite sociable and loves being the center of attention. However, she does have her moments where she draws in on herself and craves love and to be accepted. After the night of the execution, Anya still retains her wit and attitude, but tends to be more reserved and tentative in situations.
About: Anastasia was born on June 18th 1901 to Tsar Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna. She was the fourth and youngest daughter the couple had, and the fourth attempt at trying for an heir. It would take a couple more years for Alexei to be born, but despite being a girl, Nicholas loved her. Many people would think the Tsar’s children lived lavish lives and were spoiled rotten, but the truth was quite the opposite. Yes, they were children of the Tsar, but their mother made sure they lived as simply as possible. They slept on hard cots with no pillows, made their own rooms, and did needlework for charity. Once they got older, the rigorous studies began.
As a child, Anastasia was a wild one. She would often get into trouble, and despite the fact that she wouldn’t sit still for any tutor, she was very intelligent and bright. She would often play pranks on everyone, but mostly her sister Maria since they shared a room. She knew exactly how to pull her charm when she got caught and managed to get her way out of most situations. Her family called her ‘little pixie’ because of this. Her and Maria were close, despite her pranks, and spent most of their time together. However, her best friend was their younger brother Alexei. She loved spending time with him and did her best to keep him safe.
As she grew older, she wasn’t aware of the growing tensions in Russia. For the most, she just knew and saw that her father was under a lot of stress. It pained her to see him that way and always did her best to cheer him up when she could. After the scandal with Grigori Rasputin and then his murder, she and her sisters were left very empty. The five children were very close to the monk. After, their mother tried to turn their focus onto helping the soldiers, even turning one of their palaces into a hospital. Olga and Tatiana became nurses since they were the eldest, and Anastasia did her best to cheer the soldiers up by telling jokes and acting a fool to make them laugh. That was when she realized just how bad war could be.
It wasn’t long after, that Anastasia and her family were put under house arrest as the Russian Revolution came to a nasty head. Her father had abdicated the throne for himself and Alexei. The Bolsheviks soon took control and moved the family to Yekaterinburg. Being in captivity had an affect on the youngest Romanov daughter. She wasn’t as bright and cheery as she used to be, but she did try her best. However the stress began to take its toll on her once they were moved to the Ipatiev House. One day she had tried to open a window just to see the sky better and nearly got shot. Needless to say, she never tried to open another window after that. Three days before the fateful night, no one knew but had an idea of what was going on and they had their last church service. 'Don’t forget us,’ Anastasia had written to a friend.
On July 18th, 1918, the family was awakened in the middle of the night and told to get dressed. They were herded into a small basement with a maid, their cook, and Alexei’s doctor and told to wait. At first, they were told they were being moved, but when soldiers entered the room behind Yakov Yurovsky, it was announced they were being sentenced to death. “What? What?” Her father had barely repeated himself before he was shot several times. What happened next was pure chaos. Anastasia tried to cover her head as she tried to huddle against Maria, but felt herself falling into the corner of the wall. The screaming and gun shots soon died down and the room had been riddled with blood and bullet holes. The gun powder shifted through the air as the Bolsheviks made sure everyone was dead before carrying the bodied outside.
There was a bright light and she knew she wasn’t dead. Her body ached and felt like it was on fire. She didn’t remember anything. Her name, where she came from. Nothing. The nuns that had found her gave her fresh clothes and looked after her for a year, deciding to call her 'Anya’, before sending her on her way to find a job. That was the beginning of her new life. She traveled, picking up any job she could find on the way until St. Peterburg.

I have been having the strangest couple days accidentally learning things that are somewhat Earth shaking to me about Christopher Lloyd.
So I like the dude fine I've seen Back to the Future. Great set of films, fun times. I also happen to know that he plays Master Xeahnort in Kingdom Hearts now due to the untimely death of the two previous voice actors. But I'm browsing through YouTube looking for something to watch the other day and I noticed that the movie Clue is on there for free so I'm like 'hell I like Clue and it's been a while since I've seen it' so I put it on. Christopher Lloyd's in the credits for that I'm like 'what the fuck Christopher Lloyd's in here?' And lo and behold he is Professor Plum. I've watched this movie so many times and never noticed! Admittedly he's a lot younger than my remembrance of him (mainly from Back to the Future films) so that'll probably do it but still. So just about an hour ago I started thinking about something for the movie Anastasia and I looked up the list of characters because I wanted to write something down and I didn't want to get the spellings wrong. I did not realize he was Rasputin! I apparently Jim Cummings is the singing voice which is just amazing. I never knew either of these things despite also watching that movie quite a few times. (Obviously I need to start paying more attention to the movie credits) but then I just decide okay I'm going to look up his filmography because I don't want to be blindsided by any more surprises. And I always had him pictured in my mind as a relatively average height person like 5'9" 5'10". Like I hadn't thought hella about it because Christopher Lloyd isn't always on my mind despite him showing up way more often in the last few days than I thought he would. But apparently he's 6'1" !? Like he would straight up be taller than me and I'm not sure what to do with this information. Like this isn't the biggest thing in the world and it really shouldn't be so mind-blowing but I don't know it's getting late I'm kind of tired and this is tripping me up.

Jinko Anastasia AU.
Zuko is Anastasia
Jin is Dimitri
Iroh is Dowager Empress Marie
Ozai is Grigori Rasputin
Druk is Pooka.
This is set in a world where Iroh took the throne over Ozai and the war ended sooner.
Ozai basically fled the palace, swearing he would one day rule the Fire Nation and start the war over.
Meanwhile, Iroh is serving as Firelord, and is doing a good job at it too. So one night, many years after the war has ended, he holds a ball and members from the remaining nations come, since it was a celebration of peace and a better future for their children who would no longer have to worry about a war raging over their heads.
And then, Ozai's supporters attack. They set the entire palace ablaze. Iroh and his benders are doing their best to keep the fire at bay, the waterbenders are also doing their best to help put out the flames, but it becomes too much and they have evacuate. And that's when Iroh notices his children, yes children, weren't with him. Ursa wasn't with him. Hi son, his nephew and nieces. They weren't with him.
And he can only watch as the palace burns to the ground, and think how he failed his family, because Ursa couldn't bend, Kiyi, the youngest, hadn't shown signs if she could or couldn't, Zuko was a weak bender, Azula may be a strong bender but she was a child, and Lu Ten would not have been able to provide enough protection from them all.
Iroh was certain he lost them all. He was sure they were all dead. Even when he was told by a few of the survivors that they saw Prince Zuko being led away by a young girl in green, he was certain he was caught and killed. If any of them were to survive, it would have been Azula, and she would have been taken to Ozai. So, in the end, he must have lost them all. And no one could convince him to keep his hopes up. His family was gone.
What no one knows, is that Zuko survived, thanks to an Earth Kingdom girl with twin braids. She led him out in the confusion as he yelled for his mother, his sisters, his cousin, uncle, anyone he knew. He got separated from them and in the chaos, he could not see them.
Zuko ends up in an orphanage after stowing away on a ship. I'm thinking it's on Kyoshi Island, and when he's found, he can't remember anything but a girl with braids, fire, a lot of fire, and screaming, and the Pai Sho tile he has is of no help. No one knows for sure how he lost his memory, some chalked it up to trauma, but no one is 100% certain.
So, Zuko lives on Kyoshi island for a while as Li. He becomes friends with Suki and even trains with the Kyoshi Warriors but never becomes a full member. When he turns 16, he decides he wants to leave, go explore, so Suki gives him enough money to last at least a week, and tells him he's always welcomed back. They care for each other and had each other's backs for a long time by that point.
He's traveling here and there before he eventually bumps into this girl with twin braids. The girl introduces herself as Jin.
Jin thought the boy before her looked familiar, and it hits her. He looked like Prince Zuko. But, Prince Zuko was supposed to be dead. Jin remembered doing her best to ensure the Prince escaped, but when she heard he supposedly died, she thought she hadn't done enough. That she wasn't able to save him. But Li, Li looked like Prince Zuko.
Jin had been struggling to get by, she didn't have much in terms of money, she lost her job and couldn't find another. And as much as she didn't want to, she couldn't help but wonder, if she convinced both Iroh and Li that Li was, in fact, Prince Zuko, how well she would be rewarded. Would it be enough for her to go back to her family in Ba Sing Se and ensure they were well off for a while. So, she decided to go for it. Li agrees, if nothing but the chance he could be reunited with his family.
Jin tells him everything she knows about Prince Zuko. Li knows that he is a firebender, not the best, but he can firebend. They have the same scar. And while Li's hair was slightly shorter, it wouldn't take too long for it to grow back. They just have to convince Firelord Iroh that Li is Zuko, and that shouldn't be too hard, right?

I'll be adding more to this, but this is it for now.

Entry 20
Nothing else weird happened with the Hut after it swore fealty to Anastasia or whatever you want to call it. Everything was normal inside. Everything was where we left it. Aenland ended up in the worm room when he decided to enter through the chimney. All of our companions were still there—maybe a little shaken up from the Hut having been hopping around for the last two days on end, but otherwise no worse for the wear. Alexei seemed a bit spooked by the hut, but then, he’s a kid from a world without magic. A big sentient house with chicken legs is probably like a big monster to him. At least, that’s what I thought at the time.
We rested for the night, and reconvened in the morning. The kids insisted that they come along with us. There were still things they needed to discover out in the camp apparently. And they felt confident in their ability to hide from the guards. So we all agreed to let them tag along, so long as they stayed in the flying cauldron and stayed away from any of the fighting.
On the way to the camp, Rasputin manifest his face in the sky and made a big show of threatening us for ‘taking something precious from him’, but then he didn’t even do anything about it. Not that I’m complaining about not having more lightning or destruction spells thrown at me.
However the light show did distract Aenland enough that he nearly flew Nevra right into one of those landmines. I had to fly Talsune into them to knock them off course. Aenland got all defensive. As if I’d just ram into them for no reason, he should have known I was trying to help him without me spelling it out for him. But I did spell it out for him, and then he was properly grateful for me not just letting him get his ass blown up.
We made it back to the camp without further incident, and I had a plan to keep us hidden from the snipers and the enemy Dullahans. I’d taught myself a useful new spell for the occasion: greater hide from undead. We could pass through the camp completely invisible to anything that wasn’t entirely living within. Which given that Rasputin had the same predisposition for undead pets that I do, I knew this would give us a sweeping advantage against probably the most dangerous creatures waiting for us.
We decided to make our way to the back of the camp first, to take care of whoever had been throwing lightning at us the day prior.
It turned out it was treants. Two lightning throwing treants growing out of the building.
Nestian and Nevra cut down the trees before they had a chance to react, and we gathered a shocking amount of treasure hidden amongst their roots. Within the room was also a letter written in draconic in Rasputin’s handwriting, addressed to one “Radimir”, who he directed to keep an eye on “their little secret” which he didn’t want his sister to find out about.
A hoard and a letter in draconic pointed towards a dragon, but we hadn’t heard anything about a dragon working with Rasputin, nor had we seen any signs of a dragon before now. We…perhaps didn’t look into it as closely as we should have. Or maybe the answer was too close to us for us to see.
I’m not the sort to regret the past. I don’t think there’s any way we could have known, or anything we could have done differently. But somehow that stings more.
So we gathered the treasure and left the empty house behind. Aenland suggested we take out the snipers next, so that they couldn’t harass us while we cleared the Dullahan camp. I was hesitant to approach the central cathedral, but Aenland intended to snipe the snipers from a distance, and it seemed like it would be a quick in and out, so I didn’t voice a complaint.
We left Nestian and Aenland by the cleared out dragon den, and the rest of us made our way to the burnt out cathedral. The snipers never took a single shot at us—my spell did what it was meant to. They never saw us coming.
I saw arrows from seemingly out of nowhere fly through the sniper’s lookout right before I entered the cathedral with Talsune.
I felt like my heart was going to stop as a vision overtook my mind, of how Baba Yaga was captured by Rasputin. Horrible fractal effects sparked behind my eyes and I heard her screams. And Rasputin’s face swam across my vision. Before everything snapped back to clarity. I staggered up the stairs to try to still be of use against the snipers, but by the time I made it to the top of the tower, Aenland’s final arrow had slain the last undead sniper. He never really needed our help—although I’m not about to tell him that.
As I tried to catch my breath and braced myself to go back down the stairs, there was a searing pain through my body, and then blood was running down my cheeks and from wounds on my hands that hadn’t been there a moment before. Edeya was next to me, and she had blood running from her eyes and hands as well. I could feel that Talsune was in pain—whatever had happened to us had affected my partner downstairs as well.
Downstairs we heard Cesseer yell up to us that the statues were bleeding and attacking. So apparently that was a thing. Then echoing up from below we heard a familiar laugh.
Rasputin was here.
I cast Spell Resistance on myself and ran down the stairs, adrenaline banishing any remaining fatigue from the strange vision moments before. I flung myself onto Talsune’s back, and without my directing he reeled us around towards the statues.
My aim had been to try to punch past the statues and see if I could distract Rasputin while others more suited to fight the statues did so—but that isn’t how it went.
Talsune got slowed by one of the golems auras, and it began laying into him. My partner was really hurting, and we were in a bad position to try to get to safety. And then a second one joined in, just to make matters worse. I couldn’t do anything to harm the magic-immune golems. Talsune’s sword could only do so much, especially while he was surrounded.
Thankfully Cesseer stepped in and took on one of them, taking the attention off my partner. And Edeya caught up and began healing Talsune, assuring that he wouldn’t fall in this battle.
Unfortunately, since I wasn’t able to distract Rasputin as planned, he had joined in the fight. His oh-so-brave projected image flew through the wall and tried to strike Aenland with a curse—but thankfully he resisted. Aenland then proceeded to completely ignore Rasputin since he wasn’t really there, and began shooting statues, clearing the horde.
Even though we’d won, Rasputin laughed at us. He vanished, saying that the longer we took, the stronger he would become, and the weaker his mother would grow.
He’s so fucking full of it.
We’ve virtually completely cleared his entire camp in two days. What does he mean ‘the longer we take’? I think he’s just trying to sound big and scary to hide the fact that he’s starting to realize that we’re a legitimate threat to him.
Besides, there’s no way he could completely drain Baba Yaga’s power…right?
That aside, once we were done in the cathedral, we decided it was finally time to deal with the pesky little Dullahan problem.
So we made our way to the ‘Cossack’ camp. I’m still not entirely sure what a ‘Cossack’ is, but it’s what everyone here keeps calling all the Dullahans. Anastasia said that she thought that the Cossacks were meant to protect her family, she didn’t understand why they were acting the way they were now. Her brother seemed less convinced that they had ever been loyal. From what I saw of them while fighting them, I think they believed they were still fighting for Anastasia’s family, but someone had manipulated their perception of the world. Someone likely being Rasputin since he raised them as Dullahans. I have yet to tell Anastasia this. It seems pointless to heap more suffering at her feet by telling her that her loyal guards were made into puppets whose acts of violence were done in her family’s name.
With my Hide from Undead spell we were able to directly approach the camp, but once we were near the Dullahan captain and the Lantern Goat saw through my magic. The captain ordered his men to charge—but none of them had broken through my magic yet, and they seemed merely confused by his order. The Lantern Goat retreated into a tent—whether it was merely a coward or aware that it was the target, I’m uncertain.
There was one other combatant in the camp. A familiar sight from months prior. Radosek Pavril’s goat, the strange abyssal familiar that had burst into locusts the last time we’d fought it.
So, okay fine, the others were right that Pavril’s goat was here. I don’t know why his weird demon familiar would be here on a different planet consorting with a Lantern Goat, but who am I to question the motives of demons?
And seeing as it wasn’t undead, it saw us perfectly fine. It stood on its hind hooves and its body twisted and contorted out of its goat disguise until it had a grotesque fly-like head sitting atop its goat body.
I wonder if Radosek knew what his familiar really was when he was going around trying to impress women by showing them his goat?
Still, we had the jump on them with most of their troops completely unaware of our presence. Nestian led the charge, his blade drawing blood across an oblivious Dullahan.
And then my magic snapped. Unlike the snipers, these Dullahans must have had strong wills, because when Nestian’s attack connected they broke through the haze of my spell and saw the reality of us invading their camp.
The captain, astride upon a midnight black Nightmare rather than a regular warhorse, again commanded his men to charge. And this time they obeyed.
I am so fucking jealous. I made Ivan to be a superior Dullahan to Rasputin’s, I used abilities granted by Urgathoa herself and armed him with a Thanadaemon’s scythe and everything, and then he goes and does something as cool as putting a Dullahan on a fucking Nightmare? I am so mad. That much style is wasted on Rasputin.
Of course, first we had to deal with the pesky little goat demon. It charged forward and stuck Nestian with its proboscis, trying to suck his blood like a nasty little demonic vampire. Or a really big mosquito. Nestian pushed it away. Then I flew Talsune in. I had acquired a maximize metamagic rod from our recent ventures, and it was time to put it to good use. I cast a maximized boneshatter on the demonic insect, snapping and shattering its sections of its bones and exoskeleton.
I can’t say I bear much of a grudge against Pavril, but I don’t remember him fondly either. He tried to curse me when we fought against him. And this damned thing disguised as a goat had been shooting fire at us that whole fight. I wasn’t letting it get away again.
Feeling my desires, Talsune swung around and brought his blade down on the demonic half-goat-insect-thing.
Actually by now I knew what it really was, a Coloxus demon, but its partially dropped disguise made it look so horrifically disfigured that it was hard not to think of it was some strange monstrous thing instead.
With the clatter of hooves, the Dullahan captain charged forward, thrusting his lance through Nestian. Then his steed breathed out a noxious cloud that blanketed Nestian and the Coloxus demon. Then just to add insult to injury, he held up his dismembered head, and spoke our names. They echoed out, and each of us could feel our souls try to be pulled towards the grave. A nasty trick I’d been saving for Rasputin with Ivan—but seeing as he had our shadows, of course he would have his own Dullahan do the same right back at us. Most of us managed to recover, but Edeya and I seemed to have a more difficult time of it, and had to catch our breaths. I don’t know about Edeya, but I suspect for me it’s because my soul isn’ in a bit.
Yeah, more than once. I’ll get to the ‘a few times’ in a bit.
Aenland took initiative against the Dullahan cavalry, and began picking them off from farthest to nearest, to keep any more deadly charges like the captain’s to a minimum.
Ivan got into a duel with another Dullahan, but he was struggling—as loathe as I am to admit it, these Dullahans were clearly superior. They had brought knowledge of their battle tactics from life with them that I hadn’t managed to properly carry over with Ivan.
Roscoe on the other hand was doing an excellent job, despite having to avoid using his negative energy abilities. I fucking love Baykoks, easily the best undead pet. I might leave Ivan behind in Russia and just take Roscoe with me when we go back to Golarian. He can become an urban legend or something, wandering the snowy wastes.
Anyways, after the captain called out our names, the Lantern Goat seemed to take that as its cue to make a reappearance. It charged out from the tent it had been hiding in, and flashed its sickly light at us. Thankfully none of us fell into the panic it induced in less strong-willed individuals.
And now it was out in the open and completely exposed. I decided to hold off on the demon, which was shrouded in fog and would be a pain to attack now anyways, and threw everything I had at the Lantern Goat. Starting with a Destruction spell, empowered by the Pallid Princess to return this undead back to where it sprung from. The goat was still standing, just barely staggering forward. So I quickened a Boneshaker, and pulled it forward myself. Its bones ripped from its decaying flesh, and it fell in a heap. Its lantern fell atop it and shattered—releasing the soul trapped within.
While I had been busy with that, Nestian had taken care of the Dullahan captain and the insect demon. All that was left was one final Dullahan solder, which was looming over Ivan, who was struggling to fend him off. I directed Talsune towards the horsemen’s dual, and he cut down the final Dullahan. Keeping my pet alive for a little longer.
I still need him to use Death Calling on Rasputin to make up for his Dullahan captain doing the same to me, after all.
With the Dullahan encampment cleared, we only had three more locations to clear: the building with the ‘furry hunters’, the pit full of poisonous gas, and the Abbott House that made us feel an unnatural terror when we approached.
We chose the furry hunters first. And honestly this is barely worth a footnote. All that happened was that Nestian knocked on the door—as he does—and one answered. It turned out they were yetis, and the one that answered went to attack Nestian, but Nestian was faster and cut him down immediately. Then we cut the other three in the building down one-by-one, before any of them had an opportunity to act.
With that out of the way I suggested we deal with the pit next, as I had a plan to clear the poisonous gas and take the fight to the shambling creatures within rather than letting them get the jump on us at the Abbott House. The others agreed that this sounded preferable. So I dug out the Staff of Heaven and Earth that we got forever ago, that had been sitting in my bag of holding along with many other potentially useful trinkets, and I handed it off to Edeya so she could cast Control Winds through it.
She did, using her newfound command over the air to clear out the noxious fog in the pit at the back of the camp—revealing what was within. Two tanks and a legion of zombies with that same fog wafting off of them. And two large clouds of that gas that were unaffected by the wind—elementals of some sort, that were made of intelligent poisons and negative energy.
Aenland led the attack with a flurry of arrows that put both of the tanks out of commission. At the same time Nestian charged forward and cleared out the handful of living human combatants. Those that didn’t immediately fall before his axe had the smarts to flee—there was no victory here for them today.
I decided to spread a little chaos amongst their ranks. I enforced my will over half of the enemy zombies, severing their connection to the elementals that seemingly created them, and making them my own puppets instead. Then I set them loose against their former allies, having them turn on the other zombies and slaughter them—leaving us free to focus on the elementals. Talsune flew forward and burned away some of the nearest elemental’s gasses with his fiery breath. He was quickly followed up by an arrow from Roscoe.
On the other end of the battlefield I saw the other elemental make its move. It smothered Ivan and Cesseer. Ivan seemed perfectly fine—the gasses were made for the undead, so even as they ate at his flesh they also rejuvenated him.
Cesseer on the other hand wasn’t looking too good. We needed to clean this up quickly and get Edeya to her.
Fortunately, Aenland’s arrows shot through the elementals and cleared them out—good timing as Roscoe had made a misstep and had used negative energy on his bullets what healed one.
While I gathered up the remaining controlled zombies and had them gather together in convenient Searing Flames range to quickly wipe them out and get rid of loose ends, Edeya healed up Cesseer.
Then it was time to head back to the Abbott House.
Alexei suddenly became very timid, despite him agreeing with his sister about wanting to come with us this morning. He said that this was a very bad place, and we should leave it be.
But, obviously we couldn’t do that. There was something inside. Something we needed to see for ourselves.
We told the kids to get to safety away from the building while we explored.
Then Aenland decided he wasn’t going to do things the easy way—oh no—he decided it was time to go back to old tricks and take the window. He found the nearest window and smashed it, then climbed inside. A moment later I heard him messaging me over the Stone of Farspeech, informing me that he could hear Rasputin, and that he was going to hide.
I decided I wasn’t leaving him in there with Rasputin without any backup. Not when I had an ability now that could get me in and out unnoticed, virtually foolproof—or so I thought.
I handed off the Stone of Farspeech to Nestian and then used Spirit Walk to become incorporeal, vanishing onto the Ethereal Plane. From there I was able to simply walk through the wall into the room Aenland had hidden himself within. I could see the elf, pressed into a closet. I did not see Rasputin, nor did I hear any signs of him searching for Aenland.
I decided to do some scouting while my spirit form lasted.
I poked my head out of the door—and immediately came face-to-face with Rasputin.
He was seated casually on a sofa, lounging, toying with one of those nesting dolls, like the one he said Baba Yaga was trapped in.
He looked up when I entered and casually acknowledged me, stating he hadn’t seen me in spirit form in a long time.
I was so taken aback I simply admitted to him that I hadn’t expected him to be able to see me.
He laughed, noting that of course I wouldn’t if I didn’t remember anything. He then asked if it was just me here. I lied, telling him that it was—since I could become incorporeal I was ideal to scout ahead, so I’d come alone, I told him.
He said that was a shame, he’d intended to give us an opportunity to talk. But as it was, it would just be me and him.
He asked if there was anything I wanted to know from him.
I didn’t even hesitate to ask him what he knew about my past, what he knew that I didn’t remember or didn’t know.
He asked me something I wasn’t expecting. Did I want to know about Calio Caecos, or the Grim Rider?
I asked if there was really a difference.
He said superficially. It’s the same body, same abilities, adjacent personality, but there are differences. Calio is who I was at the start—and who I am now. And the Grim Rider is who I was when I worked for Elvana.
Rasputin said that I was never Baba Yaga’s rider, not back then at least. I was Elvana’s. When I went to Baba Yaga after leaving Keisuke with the mission to assassinate her, I’d refused her offer to be revived in exchange for a year of servitude. And somehow I found myself at Elvana’s doorstep instead, I ended up roped in with her plans to overthrow Baba Yaga, and I made a deal with her to become her rider instead. That’s why I was with her on Triaxus, and in Whitethrone.
I don’t get the logic behind it. I can see where I might have been too proud to accept servitude, as foolish as it might have been to seek out Baba Yaga just to refuse her, but then why turn around and lower myself to kneeling to Elvana?
The answer probably lies in the part Rasputin didn’t want to talk about.
He got evasive towards the end. He said he hated how the story ended. He hated how I betrayed them, and how I stood him up, and how he had to kill me and leave me in a ditch somewhere.
He tried to make me an offer to change things. To change that ending. Rasputin asked me to leave the others behind and to join him.
Obviously I said no. He had just told me to my face that he’d killed me once already. And besides…he’s not the winning side anymore.
I should be pissed. He killed me and threw out my body for the vultures. I should be chomping at the bit for revenge. I told him as much, that I always avenge myself when I’ve been wronged. Normally I’d be ready to swear to Norgorber how slow and painful his death will be for how he’s crossed me.
But I just feel tired.
I almost feel like I should have expected this. Of course I was working with Elvana all along. Of course Rasputin and I were lovers. Of course I betrayed him, probably on some ill-advised power grab I’d been planning since I first bent a knee to his sister, and of course he killed me.
I should be mad that he killed me, or surprised that I’ve apparently died not once but twice in the last year, but all I can feel about it is unspeakably drained.
When I refused, Rasputin just sighed and said he had to try, right?
I just nodded. Yeah. I suppose so.
I hate it that I can see where in another life I could have cared.
Rasputin told me to go get the others. He had something he needed to discuss with all of us. We’d taken something of his, and he wanted to negotiate. Although he felt he knew my answer already from our talk.
Seeing as he’d only started talking about us ‘taking something’ since we’d rescued Anastasia and Alexei—yeah, that was going to be a hard sell. For any of us—I was hardly going to be the most difficult of the lot.
I didn’t end up needing to go fetch the others, as it turned out. At that moment, Aenland sneezed loudly and there was a loud crash in the room where he’d been hiding. He slammed the door open and began accusing Rasputin of laying a trap for him. I sighed, informing Rasputin that my friends were, in fact, idiots. Then I dropped my spirit form.
At about that time Nestian, Edeya, and Cesseer came barreling in through the front entrance, having heard the commotion of Aenland crashing about.
So Rasputin had what he wanted, we were all gathered.
He informed us that he wanted Anastasia back. In return he would inform us where the dolls holding Baba Yaga were. He claimed that he wanted to keep Anastasia safe. He seemed genuinely upset about  what had happened to her—the fact he’d had to resurrect her from almost nothing after her family was massacred. I’m good at reading people, and I couldn’t believe it, but he seemed sincere.
Still, he was doing a shit job, no matter how sincere he was. With him she was surrounded by the undead specters of her former guards, sadistic monsters who experiment on humans for fun, and the manifestations of different facets of death. Even if she was physically safe—which isn’t a guarantee with Kytons and Daemons about—that can’t be good for her mental health.
Then Nestian brought up a good point. What about her brother? Rasputin hadn’t said a single word about Alexei.
Rasputin’s face twisted, and he smashed the doll he was holding as he asked ‘what about him?’
His laughter echoed as he disappeared, replaced by four phantoms. Three young girls, and a young boy.
The boy was too familiar. It was very clearly Alexei.
The phantoms were clearly in distress, but also hostile. We had no choice but to fight back against them.
So we did, releasing their souls one-by-one. Their voices echoed a quiet ‘thank you’ as they faded away with a final blow. Alexei first. Then each of the girls—Anastasia’s three sisters.
When it was done, the room was quiet. Rasputin was gone. I wanted to scream. I was tired of him toying with us. I was tired of him.
Nestian had another thought, and had run out the front door.
A few moments later there was shouting out front. I ran for the front door in time to see a horrific sight. The mangled body of what was once Alexei, with two dragon heads protruding from his shoulder blades, far too large for his small frame. He was holding another of those Matryoshka Dolls in his hands—from the quick glance I saw this one looked almost lightning scarred. But then in an instant he was gone as he cast Plane Shift.
That dragon den we’d seen before. Now we knew who it belonged to. And what secret this Radimir had been keeping an eye on for Rasputin.
Alexei had been dead all along. There had been no survivors of the Romanovs’ execution—but Rasputin had deigned to bring Anastasia back. Only Anastasia.
Anastasia was horrified at what she’d just seen—rightfully so. But then with an astounding amount of willpower she pulled herself together. She told us that there was something else still in the Abbott House, and she didn’t want to leave until we’d seen this through to the end. We could hardly deny her, not when she was pushing through so much to keep going forward. Besides, it was to our benefit to purge the house of whatever was haunting it as well.
We returned to the house, and Nestian opened the last remaining door. Within were a half dozen wraiths holding a séance binding a single ghost woman.
When we opened the door, a few of the wraiths left their positions and floated through the walls to attack us with their touch that chilled to the soul.
I threw a Flame Strike into the room, setting everything within ablaze.
Aenland ended up surrounded by three wraiths, but he handled himself fine. Nestian and Cesseer pushed into the room and began clearing out the wraiths within.
After a few moments we had cleared out the haunting specters, and all that was left was the ghost woman. She introduced herself as Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna—Anastasia’s mother. She was relieved to hear that one of her daughters was alive and well. This was enough to begin her transition to the afterlife—although she held on to the material plane for long enough to say goodbye to her daughter. Nestian went to fetch Anastasia.
I made some blithe comment to the Tsarina, and she spoke to me, referring to me as the Grim Rider. So apparently even she knew who I once was.
Anastasia was so happy to see her mother that she tried to fling herself into her arms—but of course she passed right through, her being a ghost and all. The two of them talked. Laughed, even. Then Anastasia asked her mother if Rasputin was her real father.
Oh. Yeah that would explain a few things.
Her mother confirmed. Which meant that Anastasia was the legitimate heir to Irrisen’s throne, as Baba Yaga’s granddaughter. Which is why Rasputin didn’t want Elvana to know about her—she was a threat to her rule.
Anastasia told her mother to forgive her, because she was going to commit a sin—she was going to commit patricide, because Rasputin had to die.
Her mother fully endorsed this choice, and asked Aenland to give Anastasia her family heirlooms, which the elf had apparently picked up somewhere. It was a fine uniform and a sleek gun. Anastasia handled the gun expertly—certainly with more precision than I ever could, I’m more of a spell user than a marksman.
Anastasia’s mother passed on to the Boneyard, and we began our trek back to the Dancing Hut. As we walked, Anastasia spoke to me. She checked in if I still had amnesia—I very much still do, despite having more answers now I still don’t actually remember shit. She assured me that once I got my memories back, it would feel good to have them—even the bad parts.
I hope she’s right. Because from what I’ve heard, there’s going to be a lot of bad parts to sort through.
