An Aquatic Second Contact - Part 2
USS Cerritos
Mariner entered the room to see Tendi and T’Lyn in the midst of a discussion.
“…I disagree that there isn’t any purely terrestrial life forms on any of the islands,” T’Lyn said.
“But I don’t think there would be any,” Tendi said. “Most of those islands are just atolls.”
“But those that aren’t atolls?” T’Lyn asked.
“Are rather small,” Tendi responded. “With an average size of two square kilometres.”
“You have a point there,” T’Lyn said. “But the largest island is approximately seven square kilometres. I would think that would be a sufficiently large surface area.”
“But that island is one of the most industrialised,” Tendi said.
“That’s true, but even extinct examples of purely terrestrial life would still count.”
Mariner cleared her throat.
“Hi Mariner,” Tendi said.
“Greetings,” T’Lyn added. Mariner could tell there was some annoyance at the interruption.
“That discussion was interesting, but we’re not here for a survey, just laying the groundwork for future surveys,” Mariner said.
“Not entirely true,” T’Lyn said. “We will be surveying some of the shallower seas around their main settlements.”
“That’s great!” Mariner said. “But you do know what I have done in the past.”
“I thought you were turning over a new leaf?” Tendi asked.
“With the support of the Captain and Commander Ransom, rather than going behind their backs.”
“And that is what you did in the past?” T’Lyn asked.
“You have heard of my reputation, right?”
“I have, and I can see why someone would do that, given that I had done some similar things in the past,” T’Lyn admitted.
“Really?” Tendi asked.
T’Lyn nodded.
“The events of the past year have changed me. I’m no longer the headstrong and insubordinate officer I was.”
“That’s a long story,” Tendi said to T’Lyn’s look.
“Let’s get to work,” Mariner said as she put her PADD on the table.
“Of course,” Tendi said.
Eali Toromi Station
The twin assistants lead Freeman and Ransom to a meeting room. “The Klingon captain will be here soon,” they said, again in unison, as the door opened.
“Thanks,” Freeman said.
“You’re welcome,” the twins said before slipping entirely beneath the water and swimming away.
“A little creepy.” Ransom commented.
“Not really,” Freeman said. “Besides, it’s probably a cultural thing. Something we may need to find out about before we cause offense.”
“Of course, Captain,” Ransom said as he paddled the raft into the meeting room.
They didn’t have to wait long before Captain Ma’ah and the other assistant arrived. “A representative will be here shortly,” the latter said before leaving.
“We weren’t informed that a Klingon ship would be here,” Captain Freeman said, as the Klingon joined her and her first officer in the middle of the room.
“This was a last minute assignment,” Ma’ah explained. “By Chancellor Martok himself. Imperial Intelligence had informed him that a rogue house might attempt to annex this planet into the Empire before he could prevent them.”
“They can do that?” Ransom asked before the Captain answered.
“It has happened before. If a planet is already annexed then the High Council invariably votes overwhelmingly not to withdraw,” Ma’ah explained.
“A fait accompli,” Freeman commented. “Hence why your ship was sent. To act as a deterrent, whereas a California class ship wouldn’t.”
“That’s correct.”
USS Cerritos
“Captain Freeman to Cerritos.”
“Shax here, Captain.”
“I’ve been informed that a rogue Klingon ship may be arriving soon.”
“Understood, Captain, we’ll be ready for them.”
“Good, Freeman out.”
“Ensign Barnes, prepare to launch probes.”
“Sir?” Barnes asked.
“They would likely be arriving under cloak!” Shax explained.
“Of course, sir.”
“There are methods of detecting cloaked vessels,” Boimler said to Barnes.
“I know there are,” Barnes said. “Anti-protons and tetryons.”
Boimler nodded.
Eali Toromi Station
Ransom saw someone enter the meeting room. “Welcome to Eali Toromi Station, Offworlders,” he said. “I’m Alean E. Rasle, the representative of the Republican Alliance of Oarnva Meraess. I wasn’t informed that the Klingons would be sending a representative.”
Ma’ah took that as a prompt. “I was sent by my government to ensure that rogue elements would not attempt to annex your world.”
“I see,” Rasle responded. “You have proof of this?”
“Of course,” Ma’ah said. He placed PADD on the table and played the message Chancellor Martok had sent him.
Captain Freeman took in the message. It was reassuring that Martok and Ma’ah were on the same page, so to speak. But that doubled her resolve that the rogue House wouldn’t succeed.
USS Cerritos
“Probes are ready, sir,” Barnes reported.
“Then launch. Place them at intervals between the planet and the approach vectors into the system from the direction of Klingon Space,” Shax ordered.
“Aye, sir,” Barnes said.
It was boring, Mariner considered, but it would be worth it. Knowing the ecologies of the various settlements would help her know where the needs were. “So, these towns specialise in their equivalent of vegetables?” she asked.
“That’s right,” Tendi answered.
“Cool,” she commented.
“Captain Freeman to Ensign Mariner, please report to the meeting room one the station.”
Mariner tapped her commbadge. “On my way, Captain!”

Eric feared the worst when he got back to the studio to find it empty. His first instinct was that maybe Skylar and Atti went with David or Danny but upon calling his platonic soulmates he knew that wasn't the case. He was at a loss for what to do next because he could still feel Skylar, he could still feel the pull of their bond but he didn't know where it was telling him to go. It felt dangerous and he feared that Malachi caught up to his love some how. But how? He worked hard to keep that very thing from happening.
Eric knew without Magnus even saying anything the moment he stepped into his studio that Skylar was gone. All the color drained from his face and he felt his legs give out from under him, collapsing back against the receptionist counter and sliding to the floor. "G-gone?" He rasled out, emotion evident in his tone though he tried his best not to show it as he looked up at his father figure with worry in his eyes as he told him what happened. "Skylar would have saved Kwan even if Atti hadn't asked him to. That's just the type of person he is. Atti's not at fault here. He didn't know. I should have told him why we wanted him to stay here with Skylar. I should have gotten more people to stay with them. I should have.... " he puts his head in his hands, tugging at his hair as he blamed himself for his love being gone. For Malachi having him. He choked on a sob as his world seemed to crumble around him. "Are they.... Are they alright?" He managed to chokes out, not looking up from his hands, not wanting Magnus to see the tears that streamed down down his face or the devestation in his eyes.
@Genius Labs
Magnus' steps were heavy as he pushed through the door into the studio. He knew he'd find Eric there. Yet still, the sight of him made him freeze where he stood. He looked lost, confused. And Magnus wanted nothing more than to pull him into his arms and shelter him. But he couldn't shelter him from this. And that made Magnus' heart ache for his son. So badly he wanted to scream.
"Eric..." He said, finally taking a few strides forward. "Biscuit....I am sorry. He's gone." The words felt vile on his tongue. Because Eric had worked so hard to keep Skylar safe. So hard. And Eric had never fought for anything as hard as he'd fought for Skylar. And Magnus knew, that Skylar in turn, felt the same way for Eric. Atti had told Magnus what the message for Eric had been. Now he had to deliver it. And he didn't want to. Because it sounded so much like a goodbye.
"You can't blame Atti for this." He began. Knowing he had to tell Eric what had happened. Because he deserved to know the reason Skylar left the studio. He needed to know that it had only been the most dire of situations. "Atti snuck out to see Kwan. Skylar woke alone. And went out after him. There was a fight. Atti is alright. A little bruised and very, very frightened but he's okay. Kwan was injured gravely trying to protect both of them. And Skylar. Skylar sacrificed himself. To save Kwan's life. Because....because Atti asked him to."

Trish was a bright girl skipping a grade or two. She thought her life was perfect until the end of the world came. Living on her own mostly just trying to make it back home everything changes when she meets a dark haired man named Joel.
Joel Miller x OC Trish
Warnings: A word or two.
Taglist. Tell me if you wanna be added: @amandamaesweetheart @jodiereedus22
Before Sitting on my hotel bed I brushed my hair it still wet from the shower. I needed it after the long day of walking around and looking at the sites. We were in New York. A school field trip. Being alone from my parents at fourteen was definitely exciting.
“You know he is going to propose.” Belle my best friend since the 3d grade says sitting on the bed in front of mine. Her chocolate skin looking flawless from the lotion she just put on. We both skipped from 1st so we stuck together always being the youngest in class.
“Shut up no he won’t.” I say her talking about my boyfriend.
“I bet he will. He is crazy about you.”
“So? We are too young to get married.”
“I said propose not get married.”
“Then what be engaged threw school? What about when we go to college?”
“Why not?”
“Because..”
“Because?”
“I don’t know if I want to marry him.” I say shrugging.
“What? Since when?” She asks throwing a chip at me making me laugh.
“Since he is afraid of everything. I mean I get it his dad is a doctor and it's probably scary and God knows what he reads about or sees but when he starts telling me what weird diseases I can get from doing my laundry at the laundromat is ridiculous. Like tonight I took a drink of his pop and he flipped out.”
“So he don’t like sharing food, a lot of people are like that.”
“Yeah I know but I want a man not whatever he is turning into.”
“Like a lumberjack?” She asks making me laugh.
“No, like someone who will protect me, someone who can put up with my crazy ass and doesn't make me make all the decisions. Someone-.”
“Who lets you steal their food.” She says pointing at me.
“That.” I say smiling.
“No, he is a good guy he just worries so much. Like let me breathe.”
“Ohh I know a cowboy.” She says making me laugh.
“Yes! I want a cowboy I can saddle up with.”
“Kinky.”
“You are so gross.” I say throwing my pillow at her.
“Hey I’m being a supportive best friend.”
“As you should be.”
“Well I guess I should let you get to bed. Have fun dreaming about your cowboy.” She says standing up walking to the door.
“I promise to give you the details.”
“Oh you better.” She says smiling.
“Good night love.” I say waving at her getting under the blankets.
“Night boo.”
I woke up to the phone ringing in my hotel room. I pick it up and press it to my ear someone panting on the other side.
“Hello?” I ask sitting up hearing someone run down the hall.
“Trish is that you?” Asks the familiar voice of boyfriend.
“What’s going on Louie?” I ask sitting up.
“I don’t know, there is some kind of disease, people eating each-.”
“Louie?” I ask into the phone when the call drops.
“Well that was weird.” I say getting up seeing the sun start to rise.
Stretching I walk to the bathroom but stop when someone screams. When my doorknob starts to rattle I back away from it fear pumping threw me.
Going to the phone I pick it up nothing coming threw not even a tile town. I pick up my cell phone it having no service.
“What the hell?” I ask turning to the TV.
Turning it on what I left on a movie channel was the news. A woman looking scared and rasled.
“Reports are coming in from all over there is a nation wide atack. Please remain indoors until a local officer can get you somewhere saver. Please do not panic if you see someone-.” I jump as the TV turns to loud static.
“I gotta get out of here.” I think getting up and quickly changing.
Grabbing my backpack I put some clothes inside it, and all the snacks the hotel offers. Picking up the necklace with my parents picture inside it I put it on. Them giving it to me when I left for this trip.
“Please be okay.” I say sending up a pray to protect them until I got back.
Picking up the map of New York all the students given one I shove it in my bag as well.
I put the pack over my shoulder and open my hotel door. When I find the hallways empty I take a relieved breath.
At the end of the hall being the elevator I slowly start to make my way towards it. Hearing footsteps I freeze up as someone walks out of a room.
“Benny you scared me.” I say looking at him.
He stubbles making me assume he is drunk. When he lifts his head to look at me I gasp as his mouth is covered in blood.
Screaming he lunges at me.
I turn around and starting running in the opposite direction him close behind me. Seeing an arrow pointing to the stairs I push that door open and start running down the steps. Seeing a woman leaning on the wall her holding her stomach I stop.
She looks up at me her eyes foggy.
“He bit me.” She says her head falling forward her passing out.
Holding back tears I continue to the ground floor it opening in the car garage. I jump at the sound of sirens and horns fill my ears.
Every car is trying to get out at the same time them slamming into each other.
“Hey!” Someone says grabbing my arm.
I spin around seeing my best friend Belle standing there.
“Oh my gosh!” I say pulling her into a tight hug.
“We gotta get out of here. These people are crazy!” She says pulling me with her.
“It was on the news. Some nation wide thing!” I yell as we weave threw the cars. When we get out on the main road everyone is running around screaming.
“Trish! Belle!” John yells pulling up next to us him in not his own car.
“Come on.” He says looking at us threw the window.
“It’s better on foot.”
“We’ll be saver in a car.” Belle says getting into the car with him.
“Belle come with me you won’t get far in that.”
“Stop being stupid and come on.” She says waving me in.
“I’m not going.” I say backing up something telling me to stay on foot.
“Be stupid then.” He says driving off.
Feeling alone more than ever I start running not knowing where I'm going just away from here.
Hearing screams I duck down behind some trash cans I alone runs past me and slams into a wall not getting back up when it falls.
“What’s going on?” I ask quickly getting away from the body.
Pulling my map out I look at it seeing where the nearest police station is. Seeing that it’s only a block away I put the map back and start to head that way avoiding the people running past me.
Walking around the corner I realize what they were running from a turned over car is in the middle of the road it on fire.
Even from where I stand I can see the bodies inside them dead. Belle’s lifeless eyes staring into mine.
15 Years Later.
I sit up with a start my heart pounding. Sweating from the dream, or memory I should say. I rub my face trying not to think about the job ahead of me today. I would have to go hunting. I didn’t mind it and wasn’t half bad after ten years of practice but I didn’t know if that group had past threw. I didn’t feel like having to kill anymore.
Hearing the birds chirp outside the spring air drifting thru the old house. I roll my shoulders my back cracking as I stretch my arms over my head.
Picking up my bow and quiver I pick up my canteen needing fresh water.
‘Might take a bath today.’ I think walking out of the house.
It used to be a cabin tourist rented now it was just a cabin in the woods of Tennessee. I don’t know why I kept trying to get back home but I figured I made it this far for a reason.
‘Maybe they are still alive.’ I think following a deer trail.
I walk back to the cabin a rabbit strapped to my hip and a shirt full of berries in my hand. Walking into the house I don’t notice the door being open. The lock was busted a while ago so a breeze could open it.
Setting the food down in the kitchen I take off my bow when the floor over my head cracks. Looking up I watch the dust as something moves over the floor.
‘Please don’t be a bear.’ I think to myself as I dock an arrow and head for the steps.
‘Anything but a bear.’ I think as I push the bedroom door open with my foot.
I stop when I see a man past out on the bed. His feet still on the floor his arm and chest covered in blood. Not counting the busted lip and nose.
‘I would have took the bear.’ I think letting out an annoyed sigh.
“Why do I always have to be the one patching someone up?” I asks myself walking to the bathroom.
Getting what little supplies I had I sit them on the bed.
“Hey!” I call out to him getting nothing.
“Oh don’t be dead.” I say reaching up to shake him again getting nothing.
“Oh come on.” I say pressing my fingers into his neck smiling when I feel a pulse.
“Yes! Atta boy!”
“Now to get you patched up.” I say moving to unbutton his flanel.
I don’t really think about what I’m doing until I hear a groan.
I look up at him his brown eyes meeting mine.
“The hell?” He mumbles his southern accent the first thing I notice.
I don’t bother replying him passing out.
“Alright Cowboy let's fix you up.” I say pushing the fabric to the side an angry gash on his side. His shoulder looking like a stitched up bullet wound had popped back open but other then that he was fine.
Cleaning his side off I set to to sowing him up, him not waking up while I do it. After I’m done I rebutton his shirt and go to make food.
I checked on the stranger in my bed throughout the night him not waking up but he was still alive so I didn’t worry to much.
The next morning I was in the kitchen mixing the berries I found with the nuts I found almost a week ago when I heard a bored creek.
Grabbing the knife on my hip I freeze when an arm wraps around my throat. Judging by the fact my head was pressed against someone’s chest. This was the man from upstairs.
“Good morning to you too.” I say lifting my hands where he could see them.
“Where am I?” He asks his country twang proving my guess.
“Earth last I checked.” I say resulting in him tightening his grip slighting.
“Okay, don’t like jokes sorry. You are in my house. I’m Trish by the way nice to meet you.”
“Who else is with you?” He asks his breath fanning over my face.
“No one. Just me.”
“Your alone out here?”
“Yeah, so if your gonna kill me go ahead.”
“You patched me up?” He asks his grip losing.
“Sure did. One hell of a way to thank someone.”
Grunting he lets go of me and takes a step back. Turning around to face him I realize how big he is. He was easily a head taller than me, his wide shoulders making me feel very tiny.
“Your welcome by the way.” I say him letting out a grunt as he looks me up and down.
“What are you doing out here?”
“Well I was gonna eat breakfast. You are welcome to join me if...” I say meeting his brown eyes.
“You give me your name. Not unless you are cool with being called Cowboy for the rest of your time here.” I say him lifting the corner of his mouth.
“Joel.”
Smiling I hand him my bowl of food.
“Nice to me Joel. I’m Trish.”
5 Years Later: Summer
I was sitting in front of the window watching the sunset the room around me so silent I could almost hear my heart beat. It was times like these when I was alone I wish I could just run away. Live on a farm out in the woods be free. I touch my necklace the locket making me smile. It was tarnished and the picture inside faded but it lasted all these years that I was thankful for.
Hearing footsteps come down the hall I turn my head to look at the door.
The infected couldn’t turn the knob so I wasn’t worried about that. Watching the knob turn I lift my gun it cocked and aimed a familiar face at the end of the barrel.
“Cowboy!” I say grinning lowing my gun.
“Fucking hell Trish what the hell are you doing here?” Joel asks shutting the door behind the girl who’s with him.
“I needed somewhere to lie low.”
“What did you do now?” He asks his scowl set in place.
“Nothing... “
“Wanna try again?”
“Umm I’m sorry but who are you?” The girl asks pulling us out of are soon to be argument.
“Oh sorry I’m Trish and you?”
When she doesn't answer I cock an eyebrow at her.
“Ellie.” She says sighing.
“Nice to meet ya Ellie.” I say smiling holding my hand out to her.
She takes it shaking it and quickly letting go.
“No need to be scared of me. I’m harmless right Joel?” I ask looking at him.
“If you think annoying the hell out of me is harmless then yes you are.”
“He likes it.” I say winking at her as he lays back on the couch rubbing his head.
“You wanna tell me why you are here?”
“I may or may not have stabbed a guard.”
“Why did you go an do something like that?”
“He thought he knew something about you and Tess smuggling and try to get it out of me. So I made him forget.”
“That how you got that.” He asks most likely looking at my busted lip.
“I've had worse.”
“So you two like know each other?” Ellie asks looking between us.
“More or less.” Joel says closing his eyes.
“Five years. We’ve known each other for five years.” I say looking at her.
“How did you two meet?” She asks sitting in the chair next to me.
“Oh I’m not getting paid enough for this.” He says rubbing his face and laying down on the couch.
“Need a nap old man?”
I grin when he lets out a growl.
“Does he know his watch is broken?” Ellie asks making me look from Joel to her.
“Yeah he knows.” I say softly hoping she understands that's a topic that is not talked about.
I was the type to tell you my whole life story. I knew Joel for five years and only in the past year found out he even had a child at one point.
“So how did you two meet?”
“Oh right, I was living in a cabin at the time, come home, find him half dead on my bed. I patch him up and when he comes to he repays me but trying to snap my neck. Fun times really.” I say smiling getting off the busted heater I was sitting on.
“Why does that not surprise me?”
“Because he is an angry old bear that gets poked easily.” I say walking to my bag but stop when Joel’s hand wraps around my wrist.
“Will you two shut up?” He asks his eyes never opening.
“What are we supposed to do if we can’t talk?”
“I’m sure you will figure that out.” He says letting go of my wrist his arm going to lay over his eyes.
“Fine.” I say moving to the other end of the couch I push at his feet making them fall off the couch him lifting his head to glare at me.
“What? You and little miss are clearly waiting for something Tess I’m guessing and if Im not aloud to talk then I got to find some way to kill the time.” I say sitting down.
“What should I do?” Ellie asks looking at me.
I don’t get to reply Joel putting his feet in my lap a smirk on his face his eyes once again closed.
“I’m gonna kill him.” I mouth to her making her snicker.
Smiling I lean my head back on the couch letting the silence settle over us. Sleep quickly taking over me.

seas who could sing so deep and strong [165]
They’ve spent an entirely too lazy day doing trash relic runs. Lith and Meso fissures with relics that neither of them care enough to refine, getting items they’ve already managed to wrangle from the Void. Kore’s Nidus is a long, lean line of bone and eyeballs leaning against the ducats exchange console. Nidus doesn’t have visible eyes or optics aside from the ones on his shoulders and back, but his face is angled upwards towards the relay’s lights as Judge lazily flicks through relics to get them exchanged for ducats.
Judge’s eyes keep wanting to slip closed and he knows that Kore’s nursing a quiet headache. She wouldn’t have even come to the relay at all if it wasn’t for the fact that she had to do a quick stop with Simaris.
Judge yawns, transference wobbling a little as his own mind threatens to drag him into a very deep sleep. Dangerous stuff, sleep. Judge can go ages without it — it’s not healthy, but he can do it, and usually he does without wanting to — but when he finally crashes he crashes. Usually he’s woken up by Handsome scratching him with her claws, howling like a demon to be fed or given some mediocre token of affection that she can quickly decide she hates so she can scratch at him some more, or Kore kicking the foot of his bed, snapping at him to get up and eat something because she doesn’t know how to insert an IV drip and doesn’t feel like calling Alpha or Chic to do it for her.
Some Banshee parts, some Lex parts, he even has a few Fang and Limbo parts to throw in, and —
“You didn’t tell me we had a Mesa Prime!” Judge says, suddenly awake as he stares at all four of the Mesa Prime components listed in front of him.
We, he says, because if he has it Kore has to have it. They always do their fissure runs together, and when they don’t it’s only for junk runs.
“What?” Kore’s suddenly alert and perfectly awake, all of Nidus’ eyes swiveling onto him. “What do you mean we have a Mesa Prime?”
She quickly turns, activating another console screen.
“I’m leaving you,” she says immediately after opening the screen, turning on her heel and bullet jumping away towards the docking area.
Judge quickly scrambles after her, collecting his ducats.
“How did you not know we had a Mesa Prime?” Judge asks. “I’m always asking you what we need!”
“I’m not looking for a Mesa Prime!”
“You’re a completionist! You look for everything!”
“Well you were the one who was a Mesa main for a while!”
“I’ve been preoccupied as a sand man!”
Kore’s transmission cuts as she gets onto her extraction unit, heading back to their main ships. Judge quickly follows after her, breaking transference as soon as his warframe is safely secured and in transit to their Orbiters.
“Argon!” Kore screams at him as soon as he’s on his ship, voice furious and buzzing with energy through Scylla’s speakers. “I know you wanted to sleep. I know I wanted to sleep. But. Argon.”
“I’m entering coordinates for the Void,” Judge says.
“Ordis! Where’s my Nekros? Where did you put my Nekros?”
Judge can only guess what Ordis is saying back because Kore scoffs and snaps back at the Cephalon.
“Link me,” Kore says as Judge prepares the ship for a jump to the Void. “Fuck, I’ll link you.”
Judge accepts the squadron request without looking, too busy focusing on hoping for a clean Void run where they get the argon on their first try.
Predictably, they don’t get it on their first try. Or their second. They do get it on their third, and that gets the both of them back at their ships exhausted.
Kore’s come aboard his ship after setting her Mesa up for building. Her eyes are bright as she leans against the Orbiter wall next to his foundry, illuminated by the light of the Void shining through from the navigation area up top.
She grins at him. “We’ve got Mesa Primes.”
Judge grins back, “We’ve got Mesa Primes.”
And then he snickers, “Yeehaw.”
Kore laughs, “Ugh. A Punk frame.”
“Hey! She was my frame first! But yeah. Definitely a Punk frame.”
Judge pauses, and then slips into the worst impersonation he can do of Punk. “Howdy ya’ll, who’s up for ‘rasling up some kuva on this here station?”
Kore stares at him blankly for a beat too long and Judge can feel his ears start to burn but then she bursts into laughter, clutching her sides.
“What the fuck was — “ She wheezes, laughing as she leans against his Orbiter. “That’s!”
Judge spreads his legs and does his best awkward looking bow-legged strut he can muster up without breaking down in either embarrassment or laughter. He does finger guns at her and winks, pretending to tip a hat.
“Ma’am.”
Kore’s turning pinker than her hair as she slowly slides down the wall, clutching at her sides, practically yowling with laughter. Judge can’t help but smile as he watches her curl up on the floor, reaching out to feebly try and smack him and failing because her eyes are scrunched up wit laughter.
“You’s been looking in need of some assistance,” Judge says, struggling to keep his voice as low as he can get it.
“He doesn’t even talk that way,” Kore whimpers. “I hate it.”
But she’s still laughing and shaking with laughter and crying with laughter so Judge perseveres.
“The way I figure it,” Judge starts and Kore snorts. It’s a loud, slightly painful sounding thing, but she’s giggling the entire way through it as she weakly tries to hit him.
“I can’t,” Kore hiccups. She actually hiccups. “Blease. No. Stop.”
If all Judge had to do was do very bad impersonations of Punk to get Kore to laugh like this he would have done this the second he met the blue Tenno as an Atlas ages ago.
“I reckon that you an’ me having a bit o’fun at Punk’s expense’s a mighty fine way to pass the time while our ol’ gunslinger gal is cookin’ over there in yonder foundry.”
“I hate you,” Kore cries, giving up entirely and just sprawling out on the floor weakly. “God.”
Her hand finds his foot and she weekly clings to his ankle.
“I can’t breathe,” she wheezes.
Scylla chimes that he’s getting a communication channel request and Judge opens it without thinking, the ship broadcasting Punk’s voice as he says, “Hey, ya’ll good for — “
And that’s as far as he gets before Kore shrieks. She howls. She screams.
And Judge goes down with her in a fit of giggling laughter because he can’t hold it in anymore.
“Are you okay?” Punk asks, sounding alarmed. “Ya’ll need some assistance? Guys?”
“I can’t,” Kore sobs, “I can’t do it anymore.”
“Mesa — “ Judge attempts to explain to Punk. “Mesa — “
“You — “ Kore wheezes. “You.”
“Are ya’ll thinking about me and Mesa? I was never a Mesa, you know,” Punk says after a beat. “How come everyone makes that assumption? Empress messaged me as soon as Mesa Prime’s artifacts started coming out of the Void and she was laughing and hootin’ an’ hollerin’ about just like you two. Seriously. What’s with that?”
Judge hopes that Scylla is recording this because he wants stills of Kore’s laughing, red and blotchy, face. It’s a little creepy probably, but he wants to remember her laughing forever. He wants to remember him making her laugh forever. He wants the feeling of being filled with Kore’s favorite cola from the tips of his toes to the end of his hair.
“I hate it,” Kore sniffles, hand clawing at Judge’s arm as she tries to gasp for breath. “I hate it so much.”
But she’s smiling.
(I love you.)
She’s smiling.
(I love you so much.)

October Book Reviews by Maia Kobabe
The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed by Mignola, Roberson, Grist and Crabtree
This trade answers one of the long-standing mysteries of the Mignola-verse. What where those aliens doing, those ones who appeared in like two pages of the first Hellboy trade and then completely disappeared? What was up with the one who showed up dead on Earth in a later Hellboy mission? The visitor, it turns out, was present at the moment of Hellboy's appearance- and his mission was to assassinate the young half-demon. But he didn't. He waited and watched instead.
Mis(h)andra by Iasmin Omar Ata
Isaac is an Arab-American college student with epilepsy. He feels unable to tell people about his condition and becomes more and more isolated; doctors fail to recognize the severity of his symptoms, and he struggles to keep his prescriptions filled. This is a beautiful, but strange and scattered book- moments I wanted to see more of were cut short, while seizure sequences take up page after page. Perhaps this is the perfect depiction of the condition, but I was left wanting a somewhat heftier plot. Still, I recommend it to readers interested in the subject matter. The art is emotional and deeply personal.
Warcross by Marie Lu
A very fast-paced near sci-fi whirlwind of a novel. I'm betting the elevator pitch was "The Hunger Games meets Ready Player One". Emika Chen is a bounty hunter, living two steps above homeless in New York City when she tries her hand at hacking into a major online tournament of the most popular virtual reality game, Warcross. Her glitch ends up catching the attention of Hideo Tanaka, the game's genius young founder. He swiftly pays off all her debts and flies her to Japan, to a new life as a professional Warcross player. But there's a lot more going on just under the surface- an international plot, assassination attempts, and a simmering romance. I was vaguely disappointed by the very end when I realized this book is the first of a series- I think it would have been stronger as a stand-alone. The plot carried a single novel well but I'm uncertain if it can be stretched to more than one.
RASL by Jeff Smith
I am a huge fan of Bone, and I had the chance to hear Jeff Smith speak at an event this summer where he talked a lot about the making of this, his second major comic. I went into it with very high hopes but this comic just didn't end up doing much for me. I really wish all of the female characters hadn't been treated as complete disposable. Having read this doesn't change my opinion of Bone but it will be a strong factor influencing how I think about his future works.
Her Bark and Her Bite by James Albon
A beautifully painted and intriguingly strange story of love, jealousy and art. A new artist in town rises to popularity with the "in" crowd only to discover its dark side. In an act of rage, she takes a mean-spirited and ugly revenge on the man she blames for her problems. She tries to hide the evidence, but it is revealed in the most public and scandalous of settings.
Henchgirl by Kristen Gudsnuk
Mary Posa saw an ad for The Butterfly Gang on a bulletin board and fell into small-scale super villainhood nearly by accident. Hey, it pays the bills. She lives in a shitty apartment in Crepe City with two roommates (neither villains nor vigilante) and starts flirting with a boy who uses his somewhat unhelpful skill of astral projection to try and fix some of the problems The Butterfly Gang creates in his guise as the Manikin. Morals (and corporal forms) are bound to clash, and some things get broken- like the Manikin's entire body. When a handful of new and reckless super powered people show up in town, things are bound to get complicated. Fast paced, whimsical and charming throughout.
Beauty by Kerascoet and Hubert
This story starts with a deceptively simple premise: an ugly girl asks a fairy to make her beautiful. Immediately, nearly every man who sees her wants to rape her, while most women want to disfigure or murder her. (Themes of sexual assault run heavily though this book). Beauty, as she is then called, is swept up by a local knight and falls in love with him. But the fairy, Mab, who gave Beauty the blessing/curse turns out to have an agenda- stirring up chaos in the mortal realm. Mab urges Beauty to aim higher than a local knight- why not the king of the land himself? Beauty meets him, and falls in love with him as well. The king is already married, to the ambitious and possibly treasonous sister of the Boar King, his rival. Beauty's king also has a sister who is much, much smarter than himself. The King's sister manipulates her brother into divorcing his first wife and marrying Beauty instead. From there things become increasingly tangled and political, as many different players strive for power over the people and the very future of the land itself. Gorgeously drawn, striking from start to finish.
Provenance by Ann Leckie
I am a huge fan of Leckie's Ancillary books, the Imperial Radch trilogy, enough so that I decided to buy this book in hardback (a very rare indulgence; my shelf space is at a premium). This book introduces a new set of characters in a human-inhabited system, Hwae. The main character is Ingrey, a young woman adopted into a politically important family who has devised a far-fetched scheme in order to impress her mother and secure a permanent inheritance. She has bought a prisoner's freedom from a high-security prison, in hopes that this person will be able to tell her the location of some high-level stolen antiques. Ingrey thought she had secured the person of Palad Budrakim, but when the former prisoner is recovered from cryostasis e claims to have no knowledge of Palad or the crimes e committed. And thus Ingrey's threadbare plan begins to unravel, leading her into the mesh of interwoven schemes around her- a stolen ship, a false identity, a murder and the beginning of an international incident of epic proportions. I enjoyed this book, though as a stand-alone it didn't carry the same weight or reach the same scope as the previous trilogy. I also didn't think Ingrey was as strong or interesting a character as Breq. However, what this new book does offer is a fascinatingly complex society which recognizes at least three genders, male, female and neman or neutral. The neman members of this society use e/em/eir pronouns which I found DELIGHTFUL- as they are the same pronouns I have been using for the past couple of years :D
The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin
This book is extraordinary. It has won a lot of awards and it deserves them all. First, we are introduced to the continent. It is inhabited primarily by humans, who call the land The Stillness because it is never still. It is shaken by earthquakes, pounded by tsunamis and storms, prone to volcanoes which spew ash and toxic gases, acid rains, droughts, floods, crop failures. The first four seasons are spring, summer, autumn and winter and the fifth season is death. Cities and empires measure their prowess by how many of these deadly seasons they have endured. Only after we have met the land do we begin to meet some of its inhabitants- Essun, a woman who's son has just been murdered; Damaya, a child who has been cast out by her family; and Syenite, a trained oregene from the infamous Fulcrum. Oregenes are people with the power to sense the earth's shifting to the most minute degree and re-direct these movements to suit their own will. An untrained oregene sucks energy from their surrounding, often killing everything and everyone in a wide radius. Hence, oregenes are hated and feared, even though their powers when focused are the only thing that prevent even larger catastrophes. N.K. Jemisin plays with big themes- power, privilege, prejudice, natural disasters- in a way that feels both deeply familiar and completely remade in this new and unforgettable world.
Hunger by Roxane Gay
I don't even know what to say about this book. It's a difficult read but an absolute triumph. Five stars.

Fastlavn
One of the appeals of Denmark, before we moved here was Fastlavn, a secularized Christian holiday that seemed very much like Danish Halloween. I was disappointed to find that few people actually still go wassailing. Mainly it’s about the buns, delicious confections either with varying types of flakey pastry and fillings. The most elaborate versions are like croissants filled with custard, whipped cream and jam. I actually prefer the simpler old fashioned ones with a heavier pastry and simple jam or custard inside. It’s also about hitting the cat in the barrel. Pretty much every nursery school holds an event where the kids dress up in costume and take turns hitting a barrel of strength commensurate with their age group in hopes of being the one to smash it wide open open. In case you are now imagining a piñata, this is waaaay harder. It seems to be normal for it to take an hour. There’s a crowning of the cat king and queen, the ones who make the first break and the get the last slat down and lots of laughing and noise. You can also have private parties, which I have vowed to do next year, and all the towns seem to have a public festival as well.
We were invited to Slagelse to take part in the public display with some good friends and then go wassailing. The marching band and public hitting of the cat in a barrel, there thankfully is no longer a black cat in the barrels, was fun, but too crowded and my kids weren’t up to waiting 15 minutes per turn, especially with me having to mind children in two different lines, but the wassailing was awesome.
Unlike trick-or-treating, where you have a simple three word chant, in the case of doing a “rasle”. You have a choice of two seven line songs, one for buns and one for money. We opted for the bun song, because while buns threatens mischief, money threatens to kiss the house’s inhabitants and we didn’t think the kids would be up for that. I’d heard the song a few times, as I assume my son had also, but neither of us had it memorized. I’m not sure about my son’s buddy, but with small child shyness it fell mostly on the adults to sing it with the people opening the door chiming in. It was the best of neighborhood participation. At first we got coins. Lots of coins. I had expected one house, one coin, not piles of small change. None of us had thought to bring a bag, I just didn’t know what was appropriate, so we were using a sippy cup bottom. My daughter immediately insisted on being the cup holder, because it had become a big rattle, which I believe is what “rasle” translates to...
The kids (ages 1.5,3 and 4) got really excited when we got to a house where instead of change, the woman opened up a tin of candies, imagine someone whipping out a fancy box of chocolates and you’ve got the right idea. The kids were given more fudges, chocolates and liquorices that their little hands could hold and they immediately became sticky with treats. My son’s dinosaur costume still has hard candies stuck to it! The American in me was questioning the choice to let my children eat random unwrapped candy from a stranger, but this was our old neighborhood and I don't think there are really 80 year old ladies sitting around hoping that stray children practicing a fading tradition would knock on her door so that she could poison them. At another house, the owner asked if the kids were going to perform mischief on her and when they just stared (I think the word may be archaic enough that they didn’t know it), she showed them how to shake her lawn ornaments and be rascals. A highlight was a house where a man answered in jockey shorts and a shirt (no, that wasn’t the exciting part, though I am always impressed at the blissful lack of modesty Danes show) and his son brought out a tray of actual fresh home baked Fastlavn buns. The kids each got one filled with Nutella and at this point didn’t show that much interest in continuing. We did a few more houses, one where a very elderly woman wanted to give the kids 10 Kr pieces (about $1.80) and instead handed them 50 øre (15 cents), which I still felt was plenty, another where they were holding a birthday party and asked if maybe we’d take cake, since they had piles and so on.
After we’d taken the bus back to Næstved and the children were refreshed, we did our own street. I mean, we’d done Halloween there and it felt wrong to do that and not Fastlavn. Being primed on Slagelse, my son now had the song memorized enough to sing it by himself from some prompting from me. I had also memorized it after an hour of repetition. It was absolutely my favorite part, when confused neighbors would open the door, Walter would launch into a tuneless rendition of “Fastlavn er mit navn, boller vil jeg have...”and the person would realize we were out wassailing, inevitably my son would falter on the third line and the neighbor would help them through the rest. Admittedly have the time, we just left out the lines about threats of mischief and end it at kids want treats. Despite being told that people might be annoyed being hit up twice in a year for treats, our elderly neighbors were thrilled. We got many a thank you for stopping by. The kids got whole candy bars, fruit snacks, bags of gummy candies and more change. All in all, they raked in 100 KR (about 18 dollars) each. There had been one unprepared house in Slagelse where the guy actually handed us a 50 KR (about 8 dollars) note. I have no idea what we’re going to do with all this money. I’m tempted to buy a piggy bank and let them hoard it till they’re old enough to understand how to spend it. At any rate it was awesome and I’m glad my kids only have to wait six months for their next treat hunting, costume wearing holiday.

Excerpt from: Changes in Time and Space
“Kellira is changing the plan!” Sabir said. It was not entirely unexpected, but Sabir still was annoyed at the fact.
“That she is,” the Doctor said.
“Maybe she isn’t changing all of it. we can still review the rest,” Felicia said.
“That is true. But we need to be ready for the arrival for the fleet,” Captain Anderson said. To Sabir, she seemed rather anxious.
‘Of course, so would I if I were in her place,’ he thought.
“I know that,” Felicia said. Captain Anderson walked over to Geraldton, ready to give him the next order.
“Contact the Defender and the Hornblower. Tell them to prepare the plasma cannons, we may need them,” she ordered.
“Yes, Captain,” Geraldton said. He relayed the Captain’s orders to those two ships.
The Doctor looked at the sensor display. It appeared that the new Drahvin fleet was getting ready to land near Ponta Delaga. Maybe the UNIT ships could attempt to block it from landing? Of course the Drahvins would probably just attempt to land elsewhere, but it had to irk Kellira and it would also disrupt her new plan. The Captain was coming back. She shared her plan with her.
“It is worth a shot, but it is incredibly risky,” she said.
“We have to do something about the fleet,” Felicia said.
“Absolutely, Elisa,” the Doctor said.
“It is a good idea, but it not a good idea to use the whole fleet. We can use two thirds for your strategy, and the rest as a reserve,” the Captain said.
“Good idea,” the Doctor said. She then listened to the rest of the Captain’s plan, hoping that it would succeed.
“The fleet is approaching, Mistress,” Drahvin Soldier 4W32.iii said.
“Excellent,” Kellira said. She was sure that they would be successful in establishing their base in the Azores before the day was out.
The UNIT fleet moved in towards the city of Ponta Delaga.

“Bilbo must have translated it. I didn’t know that.”
“There was a lot more,” Sam explained. “All about Mordor. I didn’t learn that part, it gave me the shivers. I never thought I should be going that way myself.”
“Going to Mordor!” Pippin cried. “I hope it won’t come to that!”
“Don’t speak that name so loudly,” Strider said.
Just hearing that name gave Hanna shivers. She hoped that they wouldn’t have to go there.

Hearing it from Martok was different from hearing it from Ma’ah.

“Captain Freeman to Ensign Mariner, please report to the meeting room on the station.”
Mariner tapped her commbadge. “On my way, Captain!”
T’Lyn watched Mariner leave. “She didn’t waste time.”
“So?” Tendi asked.

“She was slowly losing her cool,” Andrea answered.

Argentina burns reserves, asks for early IMF help as peso crashes
BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Argentina’s peso collapsed almost 6 percent to a record low of 33.5 per U.S. dollar on Wednesday, prompting the central bank to sell dollar reserves for the second straight day while the president asked the International Monetary Fund for early release of funds under a standby deal.

The currency ARS=RASL is down more than 43.5 percent in 2018, prompting massive central bank interventions including the sale of $500 million in reserves between Tuesday and Wednesday.
Nerves are frayed in Latin America’s No.3 economy as it struggles to break free from its notorious cycle of once-a-decade financial crises. The most recent one, punctuated by a 2002 debt default, tossed millions of middle-class Argentines into poverty.
Investors are once again concerned that Argentina, with its high inflation, weak economy and fallout from a global selloff in emerging markets, may not meet its debt obligations.
“We have agreed with the International Monetary Fund to advance all the necessary funds to guarantee compliance with the financial program next year,” President Mauricio Macri said in a televised address on Wednesday. “This decision aims to eliminate any uncertainty.”
A spokesperson for the Fund had no immediate comment.
The central bank sold $200 million of its reserves in two currency auctions on Tuesday aimed at stabilizing the peso, which nonetheless weakened to a record close of 31.50 per dollar. Another $300 million were auctioned on Wednesday.
“Over the last week we have seen new expressions of lack of confidence in the markets, specifically over our financing capacity in 2019,” Macri said.
Argentina has $24.9 billion in peso- and foreign currency-denominated debt payments due next year, according to official data. Total financing needs for the year are $32.3 billion with a primary fiscal deficit projected at $7.4 billion.
The Central bank says it has sold more than $13 billion in the foreign exchange market this year, leaving it with $54.695 billion as of Tuesday’s close, as monetary policymakers try to support the swooning currency.
The government expects the country’s economy to contract 1 percent in 2018 but grow by at least 1.5 percent next year.
“Guaranteeing 2019 financing will allow us to restore confidence and return to a growth path as quickly as possible,” Macri said.
‘ANXIETY’
Macri sealed a $50 billion IMF standby financing deal in June that reduced the need for costly bond market funding and briefly steadied the peso. His government has since announced more than $2 billion in budget savings, a process he promised to continue.
“We will accompany the IMF support with all necessary fiscal efforts,” said Macri, who was elected in 2015 on a free market platform after eight years of deep government intervention in the economy under previous President Cristina Fernandez.
Argentina’s biggest labor group, the CGT, said on Wednesday it will call a 24-hour general strike on Sept. 25 to protest Macri’s fiscal belt-tightening measures. Two smaller union groupings said they will go on a 36-hour strike on Sept. 24 to protest the IMF, which many blame for the 2002 crisis.
Ahead of an expected re-election bid next year, Macri has seen his popularity fall after reducing retirement benefits and cutting utility subsidies that people had grown accustomed to under Fernandez.
Lowering subsidies was aimed at reducing Argentina’s fiscal deficit. But the move also boosted consumer prices by raising household water and heating bills. Twelve-month inflation was clocked at 31.2 percent in July.
“I know that these tumultuous situations generate anxiety among many of you,” Macri said. “I understand this, and I want you to know I am making all decisions necessary to protect you.”
