I really wish Gaara's arc had been a little more involved because I truly don't think the sheer horror of it all is delved into enough. In the end it's sort of like he just. Snaps out of it. But then you start thinking about it and you're like. Oh. This kid literally could not sleep for years. Oh this kid was being tormented by Ichibi 24/7. Oh this kid had everyone trying to assassinate him when he was tiny. Oh this kid trusted one single person and they tried to kill him too and then died in front of him. Oh this kid was told everyone including his family hated him and that he was a monster and should die. Oh ok. Like sure murder was not the answer but also considering the circumstances he should've been even more out of it than he was

We've all heard about the Curse of Hatred or the curse of eternal conflict between Asura and Indra, but what is really slept on is the Curse of Monogamy that seems to affect the entire Naruto world without anyone noticing. I'm not even talking about the lack of poly relationships, it's much more than that.

When it comes to canonically confirmed romantic interests, it seems to be a rule in Naruto that if you fall in love with one person, you are cursed not to ever end up in a relationship with anyone else for your whole life. Even if your love interest dies, you are cursed to stay single forever, even if it means being alone for decades. You want examples? I give examples.

Hell, this goes so far that The Last movie (afaik, I didn't watch it) retcons Naruto to never have really been in love with Sakura and states that he confused attraction towards her with his drive towards rivalry with Sasuke.

The only character who ever managed to somewhat escape the Curse of Monogamy is Ino Yamanaka, but it's only because Sai fulfills the role of a "we have Sasuke at home" for a large part of the narrative.

while i do understand that Rasa did give Gaara a traumatic childhood, as a history student i cant really help but feel for Rasa as well. This man had the pressure of a whole economically drained terrain on his shoulders, his wife died at childbirth when he was what? 27 barely? his council deemed his son as a failure, his son was going on rampage and killing his village, and the fate of his village was hanging by a thread

and i don't even want to think about the nights he might have spent mourning his wife and blaming himself for being a failure, a failed husband, a failed father, a failed ruler, because he was obviously tortured by guilt when he was reincarnated

did he commit mistakes? yes. did he make his children's childhood traumatic? yes. but do i understand why he did what he did? obviously yes. he had so few choices at hand, none feasible enough to sustain the barren desert economy. moreover, the kazekage clan is so much like a historical royal clan you can't really judge it according to modern parameters.

Rasa's character is also so tragic, i love the depth and complexity of it and also the dilemmas and duties a king had to face, duties as a single father of three children, duties as a ruler of a barren economy, you can't really just label him as "he was an asshole father" as a shallow statement

i think something that's so funny is like. kakashi is put in so many situations in canon and clearly he is not right but whatever. it happens. everyone you ever love dies? cool whatever. WHAT IF a bunch of people on the internet also gave you mommy issues. what if your mom was the snake man who wants to use your student's body as a skin suit? WHAT IF your mom was the moon princess who eventually tries to end the world? what if she super loved you though? what if you're actually half moon alien creature and perhaps even an abomination in the eyes of modern shinobi society? hm? what then gay boy?

if you would feel so inclined to humor a simple jester, imagine this:

kakazu vs kakashi. kazaku manages to get his creepy weird tendrils around kakashi's heart but because kakashi is half moon alien creature, kakazu perishes on the spot. one second 'ooooh i got your heart copy ninja oohh im gonna make this hurt copy ninja' less than a second later *ah echo sound effect* and suddenly he's dead on the ground in the peter griffin death pose. why? because he couldn't handle moon princess alien chakra. pure, unfiltered chakra not sullied by the mortal condition. and everyone just...accepts it. kakashi has no idea what happened and he's not going to think about it too much. in fact, even though kakazu was an enemy, his death via merely touching kakashi's heart fucks with him even MORE because what do you mean someone touches, someone WANTS him (in a very deadly manner, but i digress) and they DIE. he must be cursed.

but he just has moon princess chakra blood and that makes it dangerous for anyone to try and absorb his chakra, much like kakazu was trying to do.

fast forward kaguya, aka mother (in the rupaul (gay) way), betrays madara and stabs him and reunites with zetsu. and— oh! hello son! you do not look so good, have you been eating enough vegetables? i saw how you killed that fraudulent immortal! i was so proud. you so much like your father. he was such a dear but alas, he was mortal in the most pure sense and he cannot be brought back. but you have half me so it's not too late for you to develop your horns! you're basically a toddler still. oh mama loves you baby boy! now watch out, she's going to kill your friends and loved ones <3

or maybe she starts talking to kakashi through his dreams and that prompts him to learn more about her and the otsutsuki. maybe he learns to channel any power she passed down to him. or maybe he's just stuck with the information that he's the secret love child of an alien and never mentions it to anyone ever because in the grand scheme of things, he has a lot more going on in front of him.

Rasa ditched his son that he hates onto the brother of the woman who died in childbirth birthing said son

Yashamaru pinky promises the kid who resulted in his sister’s death that he’s totally totally totally loved. This does not end up well.

Rasa then sends his brother in law to murder his own son

His brother in law could have said no but CHOSE TO SAY YES because he also hates Rasa’s son

Yashamaru rocks up to fight a jinchuriki alone with literally nothing else on him but a sneak attack

He then tells his notably isolated and hated nephew with a literal demon in him that he’s always hated his guts and that his mom probably hates him too

He then reveals that he planned to suicide bomb them both and dies

Rasa says omg yes the like only two people i’ve ever had a connection with are gone i’m totally sane and clear minded we should totally try that again yknow just for the village third time’s the charm and sends seven more assassins all of whom die against his now deranged kid from the ages from 6-11(?)

Many years later Rasa also lets himself die again instead of having to put up with either this kid or any other of his kids
