“It’s only a model,” she heard the Englishman telling the girl beside them. “The actual sculpture is in the square outside the Uffizi.”

“And who is it by?” the girl asked him.

“It’s a Giambologna,” he replied, and Cora let herself look toward him, listening closely. “Completed in 1583 for one of the Medicis. Sabīnae Raptae.”

Cora silently translated what she already knew it was: The Rape of the Sabines. She also knew that the real one, outside, was carved from one block of marble; but looking at the plaster model now, it somehow felt more intimate and more painful than she imagined the marble one would feel. The woman being held tightly by the middle figure, the man who was abducting her, and down below the third figure—-the old man, the girl’s father, unable to defeat her captor. Cora followed the lines of the figures, tried her best to look at the form of it all, but only the story remained: Roman men abducting women and girls to make them their wives.

“Something to look forward to, then?”

Cora startled a little at Robert’s words, and then turned and peered up at him, furrowing her brow in confusion. “What?”

She watched his face change quickly. “I mean seeing it. The marble one.” She watched, then, as he lifted his eyes back to the sculpture model, and she did the same. She nodded, understanding. “If this is only the model…”

“Yes,” she quietly tried to agree—the technique—but then she sighed. “Yes,” she said again, feeling less like she should keep quiet. “You’re right. To think this was only his start. But…”

He tipped his head closer to hers. “But?”

“Well, to have to think of the terrible event over and over again. The abduction. To have to imagine what the woman must’ve felt for years as he worked.” She looked at the Sabine woman again, her detailess face, and she took in a breath. “Even in this one—merely the model of his work—she looks so afraid.”

Her husband was quiet beside her for a moment, but then she sensed him move a little. “Perhaps it’s an homage to her? To them all— the Sabine women?”

She brought her eyes to his.

He went on. “Perhaps it’s not to commemorate the event, but rather to …” he trailed off as Cora met his eye, and she waited for him to finish. After a moment, quieter, he added, “…commemorate her.”

“Oh,” she looked back up at the statue; she hadn’t considered that. “Do you suppose that’s why she’s the higher figure? Her fingers outstretched to the sky?”

He hummed. “Perhaps.” And then. “Yes. I suppose it is.”

She made a little noise at that, a flat little hmm, and tried her best to refrain from grinning. She knew what he was doing—bending the truth of the art to please her.

“What?”

She narrowed her eyes, and let herself grin. “Now you’re just trying to be agreeable,” she whispered to him, and she felt him soften beside her. She glanced at him and saw he was smirking.

“Shall we find David?”

She smiled, and turning, he held out his hand to guide her through the gallery.

Juan de la Corte (Amberes, 1585 – Madrid, 1662) El rapto de Helena primera mitad del siglo XVII óleo sobre lienzo 132 x 180 cm Nº inv. P01814 Colección BBVA España

La composición repite, con algunas variantes, la del Museo del Prado. Este episodio fue varias veces interpretado por el artista con esquema compositivo muy semejante, en el que perviven muchos elementos de la tradición del romanismo flamenco del último manierismo en las actitudes y tipos de los personajes. Las series de lienzos con la historia troyana fueron muy frecuentes en los palacios de la nobleza española, y Juan de la Corte parece haberse especializado en ello.

Además de la serie existente en la Colección Real (Museo del Prado), se conocen otras tres de varios lienzos. Este ejemplar seguramente es el que en 1937 fue recogido por la Junta de Incautación y Protección del Tesoro Artístico. La escena corresponde al relato de La Ilíada, en concreto al momento en el que Paris rapta a Helena, esposa de Menelao, rey de Esparta, llevándosela a Troya y desencadenando con ello la guerra narrada por Homero. Al fondo de la composición, las murallas de la ciudad, y a la derecha, las naves que han de conducir a Helena.
