childhood emotional neglect hits extra hard when you really love your dad.
anyway this started as a angsty vent doodle but I put way too much effort into it to not post, but.... let's be honest it's illegible. so...
Transcript below the cut!
TOP COMIC
Tot Donnie: [tearfully clutching his head] Papa? Have you fixed my glasses yet?
Splinter: [Out of frame] ...
Donnie: ...Papa?
Splinter: Huh, purple?
Donnie: Have you fixed my glasses yet? My heads really starting to hurt.
Splinter: Oh. Not yet purple. I've been busy. The last season of "The Maiden and the Mess" has been airing and I can't miss it.
Donnie: Can you do that soon?
Splinter: Do... what? Oh, your glasses. Yes, yes, Purple, I can do that. Run along and play with your brothers now, the commercials are almost over.
[Timeskip to later, when Tot Donnie is having a meltdown as a result of the headache. He is curled up, crying, clutching his head. He's covering his ears and his eyes are closed.]
Splinter: [Still offscreen] Purple, what is wrong with you?!
Donnie: Mm!
Splinter: Purple, if you can't tell me what's upsetting you, it must not be important.
Donnie: [Hiccups, sobs] Mm!
Splinter: I'm not going to humor you crying for attention. Go away. I can't hear my shows over your nonsense.
BOTTOM COMIC
Raph: [Walking in to Donnie's lab, only to find his head in his hands on his desk.] Hey Don, are you okay?
Raph: [Looks at the ground to find a piece of Donnie's tech smashed, like it had been thrown on the ground in anger.] Oh.... buddy. That was the gift you made dad, right? Did he... not like it?
Donnie: [He answers, but with his head still in his hands, the response is muffled.]
Raph: What?
Donnie: [Peeking through his fingers, distraught.] He didn't even LOOK at it.

*in a deep, gravelly voice* "Gimme that, Mikey!"
The way you can tell which one is Raph by the deep grunting
Tumblr media
"This is your soul, Mikey!" No wonder Mikey's always trying to get under Raph's skin. He's getting back at him for years of torment
Tumblr media
Even witht the magical mind wipe nonsense, them not remembering this makes more sense when you realize they're toddlers here. The artstyle chance on the Turtle Tots makes it harder to realize, but they're younger here than in previous flashbacks
Tumblr media
Which was more difficult, procuring the remains of someone with no family and having them cremated or getting his hands on that sick-ass urn with dragon carvings?
Well, Splinter is the master of dumpster-diving, so…

[87 Rasey - yes im jumping straight to this, fight me, there is some soft under that unhinged nonsense. Oh and blue because he wears a blue/teal shirt]
It was a quiet night, too quiet, Casey hated it when it was like this. Sure, it meant the lawbreakers were staying out of trouble, but it also meant he wasn't allowed to smash things. Least Raph was sat next to him as they watched the city, looking out for any sign of, well, anything really. Casey rather liked spending time with Raphael when it was just the two of them; they were both hot headed and liked to be violent - Case just happened to be a little more unhinged, that's all.
He trusted Raphael. Maybe that's why he felt his guard could be let down, just a bit. Seeing no reason to be wearing it at that second, Casey reached up, and, without bringing any attention to what he was doing, casually unclipped the red straps that held his Hockey mask in place, removing it completely. He had never shown his face to any of them before. Running a hand through his hair, Casey gives a huff,
"Quiet night," He comments, hockey mask in his hands as he glances towards Raphael, offering a faint smirk, "Guess those Scuzzbuckets know Casey Jones and Raphael are hunting them down."
| Muse interaction
The night was nice, a faint chill in the air but at least the sky was clear so you could see the stars up above. New York was the city that never slept and yet? Raph sort of huffed a bit it was just so quite tonight a bit to quite if he was honest. Not the kind that was left to make one one suspicious mind you and that made it worse and was starting to wear on the turtles patience at this point. Wasn't New York meant to be that city that never spelt at least then? Well right now it was very much the city that was dead quite with nothing going on! Normally he would just turn in and head back home. But well he had kind of planned to spend the night with the city's local wack job Casey. If the night was quite then well that would lead to a few things one a early call of their plans or two and the more likely option Casey was going to start going on a smashing spree because of the lack of action. Well guess that would allow him to be around Casey longer.
Raphael sighed loudly, slightly make it louder than needed to be as he let himself slump back against the billboard sign they been using to be their look out point right now. "So much for the city that never sleeps uh?" Raphael complained a bit. Slightly glancing over towards Casey now, he liked hanging out them despite how out there they could be yeah he had a crush on the guy an obvious one at that too. But he did just like Casey as well, he didn't want the night to end. But, well meeting up to take tot streets for lawbreakers was kind of the only reason they were out and about uh? Casey wouldn't just wanna hang out around with him? "not even a jaywalker out tonight." He tossed in as he looked up to Casey just now. They been quite themself well it's not like Casey was big on conversation in the first place, but didn't really stop Raph from dragging out any bit of conversation he could get out from them.
Tumblr media
"whatcha think Case?" he slightly tilts his head curious as Casey went to lift his hand up. reaching back behind their head as they undid the clips on the red straps that held that hockey mask in place over his face right now. It was a bit odd Raph unsure why they were even taking it off just now but he also kept watching out of a growing curiosity. Casey pulled the mask free from his face and set it down as they let out a sudden gruff, Raphs eyes followed to look where they set it too. For some reason he grew quite not even physically reacting to the action before it clicked in his head that wasn't Casey's face. And well duh of course it wasn't his face but wait! then that means?! Green eyes darted back up to them.
"Quiet night,"
Raph's eyes widen he never seen Casey with out the mask before after that other night about keeping his identity sort of secret. Like how Casey wasn't even his name. But Raph had taken it at the time to also mean that meant getting closer to know them was out of the question as well. That Raph would only know Casey as this crazy manic who swung around baseball bats to bust up knee caps of lawbreakers or anything inanimate object that got in his way so he could smash something. But now? no mask and a smirk that cause Raph's face to flush a little and make his heart flutter within his shell the second they flashed it his way. Then there were his eyes. Casey eyes were so indescribable. Because they were so unique it explained the mask more, it be easy to notice a guy with two different colored eyes after all. One was so deeply blue, such a cool and calming shade of it. The other was so rich in it's warm brown coloring. It left the turtle a loss for words. it made him think of something but for the life of him it was like the sight of Casey's face had fried his brain just then and there.
"Guess those Scuzzbuckets know Casey Jones and Raphael are hunting them down."
Tumblr media
"Wow" he near whispered his remark just now, because he was in pure awe whatever Casey had said had fallen on death ears. ."your eyes are..just wow." Was the only word that finally fell from his beak. It was like standing at the shoreline! that's what Casey's eyes made him think of. Like being out on the beach and standing just on the edge of the sand where cool ocean water swept up over your feet.
Raph couldn't stop staring hell Raph didn't wanna stop staring as if Casey's eyes were hypnotic casting a spell over the turtle. Willingly at that, he wanted to stare forever. And that thought brought heat to his face fast as he only now seemed to catch up to what was going on man now Raph was understanding the term of movie star smile. Stars were hot right? like the sun? Don said something about that once? is that why that's a thing? Star were dazzling. So they called actors stars cause of that right? so much so they fried your brain? What the fuck was Raph going on about just now. How long has it been since he talked noticing Casey still looking at him now as he jolts a little. He finally torn his eyes away from Casey letting his face paint over in a nice deep red. Trying to keep his face forward now. Come on Raph say something anything! man even Raph was too gay for Raph, fucking Jones needed to stop putting him through this his heart might not be able to take it. He side glanced a little to them still seeming to have his attention as he offer what was meant to pass of for a casual laugh only to come out so bizarrely.
"Eh guess I know another reason ya keep that mask on though. If the law backers saw ya they be way to stunned to wanna fight and that would take the fun out of it huh?" He tried to flirt just a bit there if Casey got his meaning. "heh gotta protect those movie star looks right?" just in case that idiot needed the clarification he was complimenting them just now. He felt like his heart was in his throat now as he swallowed thickly swearing even Casey would hear how it was beating. He called it before he was in trouble hes falling for Casey, and he's falling fast. Worse, he didn't want it to stop.
"You're uh eyes are like the shore line ya know? kind of shame ya gotta keep them covered up so much never seen eyes like yours before." Oh Raph please shut up, he was hoping for a robbery suddenly now.

Time for more
More Coraline AU

It’s Other Karai
She’s just as amazing as Mikey remembered (barely even took notice of the button eyes)
Other Karai tells Mikey how proud she is of him. That he’s grown so much and is so strong. His family is so lucky to have him and they’re so so happy that he is here with them.
Mikey has another cry with Other Karai and she hugs him and soothes him and tells him that he did such a good job and that things are so good now because of it.
And Other Karai notices the scars on Mikey’s arms and how they shake and asks him about it.
Mikey: Uh, it happened when I opened the portal to save Leo?
Other Karai: Oh, I know that love. But, why are they still like this? I imagine they must hurt something terrible. You truly saved your brothers in more ways than one that day didn’t you? And still trying to help while enduring all this pain?
She takes out a small container and unscrews the lid. Inside is a creamy paste that Other Karai gently rubs onto his arms. It smells of the balms Splinter used to use back when they were tots. Before they seemingly out grew having him apply that to them.
Other Karai: I know that Yoshi should know how to still make this for you boys. Why hasn’t he done so?
Mikey: Oh, it’s not Dad’s fault! He’s just been busy and tired and
Other Karai: Nonsense. He should always be there for you boys. I…I’m sorry that he hasn’t been there for you Mikey. I promise that we always will be though.
Other Karai washes the balm off of Mikey’s arms in the sink and, it really helped a lot! Especially with the pain.
Other Karai calls Other Splinter into the room. He apologizes to Mikey. Says that he knows he has failed to be with the boys when they need him, but that he’s very proud of Mikey and will always be there for him here in this place.
And Mikey just feels so relieved. Like. A pressure be didn’t even know was building inside of him was finally released.
Another group hug happens. Other Raph carries Mikey to his room and Mikey feels so secure. When they get to his room, it looks just like his room from the old lair. Other Donnie asks if he likes the upgrades and Mikey says that he loves them.
Other Leo smiles so widely, radiating hope and confidence. As Mikey starts to fall asleep in his bed that he hasn’t been able to sleep in in so long, Other Leo says that they’re all so happy Mikey came to see him. That they can’t wait to see him again soon.
Mikey has the best sleep since before the Shredder.
He wakes up back in his actual bed. But! His arms still feel so much better! It wasn’t a dream!
He runs out to tell everyone and runs right into the tail end of an argument between Raph and Donnie
Donnie: —without that, Leo might not ever—!
But Raph punches a hole into the concrete wall behind him, face shadowed as he looks down.
Splinter is leaving the kitchen, holding an armful of snacks as he returns to his bedroom.
When Raph looks up to respond to Donnie, he sees Mikey standing on the opposite side of the room. His face goes from grief stricken to artificial cheer in an instant.
Like someone was physically pushing Raph’s cheeks up into a smile.
Raph: Hey, Mikey! I-I didn’t hear you wake up!
Donnie jumps and turns to see Mikey. Face pale and eyes bloodshot.
Raph: You hungry? How are your arms feeling? You sleep alright?
Donnie storms away as Raph squeaks out the questions.
Mikey: What’s going on? Did something change with Leo during the night?
Raph: Leo’s… he’s… You-You don’t gotta worry about that, okay Little Man? I’m sure-I’m…
Mikey presses. Wants to know what he and Donnie were talking about. Raph keeps what he probably thinks is a smile going while his eyes fill up with tears trying to reassure Mikey that everything’s fine.
Mikey wants to make him tell him what’s going on. Kinda wants to cry, and not in the good relieving way he was doing with the other family. He knows if he does cry, Raph baby him all the harder and worry way more than he already is.
Mikey wants to barge down splinter’s door and ask why he isn’t helping Raph with that cream Other Karai says that he knows how to make. Why isn’t he helping them? Helping Mikey Raph.
But Mikey looks away and says he’ll take some breakfast. While Raph goes to make some. Mikey decides he just wants to talk to Leo see Leo.
Leo would know what to say. How to get everyone to stop fighting. That’s part of what made all those fights with Raph so aggravating. Mikey and everyone knew Leo could spin the situation into a nice one. But every time chose to just egg Raph on and
He’s still asleep. Breathing softly. Well. Has a breathing tube and a bunch of other machines that Mikey had to look up the names of cause no one else wanted to explain to Mikey what they did.
But. He’s still there. Because Mikey never gave up hope. Just like Leo told him. Even when everyone else did.
He wanted to talk to Leo because he read online that sometimes coma patients can still hear even if they can’t respond. But. Casey is asleep in a chair in the corner.
April walks in behind him and is surprised to see Mikey. Pastes on her own smile that’s more believable than Raph’s. But. It just looks like Leo’s fake smiles.
April whispers she’s here to pick up future boy. So, don’t worry Mikey. She’ll keep watch over them. She’ll do a real good job here. So, Mikey can just go rest and relax.
She wants to do a good job and be useful.
This room is too quiet. This lair is too quiet. So quiet, any noise travels far. The only sounds are the faint noises of all of Leo’s machines, and Raph quietly trying not to cry in the kitchen.
Mikey doesn’t last five more minutes in his room until he’s running back to the little door that takes him to his Other Family.
Ima keep talking about coraline au
Mikey dealing with all the emotions post movie and just. It’s like. Everything has changed in such the worst way even though they got their happy ending.
Donnie is snappy and Raph is sad and Leo is in a coma
Meanwhile, it’s like Splinter is pulling away again when they need him the most
AND Mikey can’t even relax in the comfort of his home cause this place is still so new and different and
there’s a little door?
Never noticed it before. But. There’s still a bunch of this place that they haven’t really explored yet.
It’s too small to be something like a maintenance door. And it was really hidden away behind a thick layer of dust.
And, it’s locked.
But. Not too far away. Mikey finds a black iron key. Bout a stone throw away.
The thing is absolutely covered in spiderwebs. Which is. Also odd.
Mikey doesn’t even know how he found this black key that was so perfectly hidden away here.
Or if it will even open—aaaand it opens the door.
Mikey wonders if he should tell his brothers.
He doesn’t want to talk to them right now.
The key unlocks the door and Mikey crawls in. And on the other side of a long tunnel is… he’s back home???
It was a straight tunnel Mikey crawled through. How’d he get turned around like this and wind up back home?
And with a “HEADS UP!” Raph speeds past him on his skateboard.
Going after Raph, Mikey has a moment to actually look around. And. This place really is Mikey’s dream place. Yeah it’s the new lair, but it feels like home now. It looks brighter, and more lived in. Like it had been their home from the start.
And Raph falls off his skateboard and wipes out, but hops back up immediately with a laugh about how his face takes damage like a boss
Raph sees him and looks so happy and tells Mikey he’s so glad he’s here and he has big black buttons for eyes.
Mikey freaks and this confuses Raph. The sound brings out Donnie, who is carrying a bunch of games and also has buttons for eyes where did Mikey leave the exit—
He finally spots the little door across the way and runs to it before running into
“Woah! Leaving so soon, Miguel?”
It’s Leo. Awake and healthy.
And yeah. He has button eyes as well. But. He’s whole. And talking and smiling and—
“Hey, Mikey. Hey, what’s wrong bud? Oh… Mikey.”
Mikey cries and hugs this Leo. And he knows that this isn’t really his Leo. And that Leo has never been good at comforting others. He’s sometimes worse than Donnie. But he
“Oh, everything’s okay Mikey. We’re all okay. You did such a good job! Hey. Hey. I’m really proud of you.”
Mikey finds himself in the middle of a group hug with all his brothers.
It’s what he really really needed. That. And the good cry he’s having now.
When everything winds down, Mikey asks who they are.
They all look confused. They say that they’re Mikey’s brothers.
And Mikey… doesn’t want to be rude cause they do look like his brothers (for the most part. Like. 95% of them) and they act way better than his brothers.
But.
“Uh. No. I got that. But. You’re not though. My brothers don’t have… uh… have…”
“You’re brothers don’t have button eyes?”
“Pffft Duh! We’re your Other Brothers!”
Mikey: … huh?
Other Donnie: Didn’t they tell you about us? Pretty much all the Hamatos have them. I can’t believe you didn’t know until now!
Mikey: I…no. They didn’t tell me.
Brushing past that. All of Mikey’s other brothers say that it sounds like they need to do a Mikey Day!
A day where they all get to be happy doing the things that make Mikey happy! And Other Splinter will join them! He smashed his tv long ago, and he loves being out of his room and playing with them!
Other Donnie is so happy and relaxed. He only runs into his lab to run out just as quickly with another invention for them to play with.
It’s so cool how Other Donnie is able to run into his lab and almost immediately run back out with a new fun invention.
Other Raph trusts Mikey to do anything! Never worries about Mikey injuring himself, and completely believes in him.
Other Leo is so open! There was a point during the day when Other Leo said he needed to take a break because he was tired. All the Other Brothers got worried, but Other Leo just needed a moment.
He talked to Mikey and it felt so so good to hear how Other Leo was doing. And! He wasn’t doing bad! Just needed Mikey to listen.
It felt so good to have his Other Brothers talk to him like this. And to talk to them so openly in return.
It’s so easy to look past the weird button eyes. If Mikey thinks about them, yeah they give him the shivers. But, between skateboarding and arts and crafts and so much more, it’s just more fun not to think about them.
Also. Other Leo and Other Raph never fight.
During the whole Mikey Day, all of his Other Brothers worked together in sync in the way Mikey missed doing with his brothers.
The end of Mikey day had his other brothers asking him for a snack from the kitchen, and that’s where Mikey finds.
Other Karai. Alive and well.

Note
(just got done reading the rules) can you write a one shot where raph gets sick with a stomach bug as a little turtle tot?
Caught a Bug
Raph woke up slowly but not in a good way. His stomach felt tight, too full and too empty at the same time. His mouth was dryer than Donnie’s sense of humor. It was hard for him to lift his head from his pillow, let alone the rest of him from bed. His body ached all over, and he felt hot and cold at the same time. Any movement at all made him feel dizzy and nauseated. All in all, the seven-year-old snapping turtle felt awful. He wanted to go back to sleep.
“Boys! Time for breakfast!” Splinter shout was loud enough to fully awaken Raph.
Not wanting to worry his family by skipping breakfast, Raph got up. When a chill ran up his shell, he pulled his thick red sweatshirt over his head then sluggishly made his way down to the kitchen. It was a miracle he didn’t tumble down the steps with how heavy his body felt! Taking a moment to regain his balance, the snapping turtle paused at the kitchen door to watch his younger run past him in a frenzy as their father set the table.
“Morning,” Raph mumbled, rubbing at his eyes and swaying on his feet.
“Good morning, Red,” Splinter greeted his eldest son. He glanced at the snapping turtle mutant and gave him a worried look. “Although, you do not look so good right now. Did you not sleep well last night?”
“I slept fine,” Raph said with a shrug. He actually wanted to go back to bed. However, he didn’t want to worry his family, even if he felt like absolute garbage with his stomach twisting in every direction.
Splinter hummed, giving Raph another once over and carefully sniffing the air around him. The rat mutant opened his mouth to say something, but Donnie started pounding on Leo for shoving him into the wall. It was enough to give anyone a headache with the way Leo was yelling “It was an accident!” the entire time. With Splinter’s attention drawn away by his brothers’ middle-child nonsense, Raph lifted himself up to the table next to Mikey. His stomach gurgled loudly and a wave of nausea hit that the snapping turtle found difficult to fight down.
Mikey gave Raph a concerned look and said, “Maybe you if to eat you’ll feel better.”
Mikey could be right, but with the way Raph’s stomach flip-flopped at the thought of food… The snapping turtle shrugged and glanced at what Splinter had made for breakfast. Scrambled eggs loaded with cheese and veggies, bacon piled high, bananas sliced up in a bowl, and a plate of toast sat upon the table. The sight and smells were overwhelming.
One a normal day, Raph would usually pile as much food onto his plate as he could get away with, but right now it was all too much. The way the cheese oozed around the eggs made his stomach churn. He could smell the grease that was starting to congeal on the bacon. The bananas were riper than his fear stink. The only thing Raph thought he could tolerate was the toast. It wasn’t fair! Pop’s scrambled eggs were the best!
Splinter successfully broke up Donnie and Leo and got them settled at the table. While they and Mikey eagerly plated their meal, Raph reluctantly grabbed a piece of toast. He stared at the lightly burnt slice of bread for longer than he truly needed to and carefully took a bite. It was a struggle to even swallow the toast with how dry his mouth was.
Splinter, Donnie, Leo, and Mikey stared at him in shock. Splinter rounded the table and felt his eldest son’s forehead and immediately pulled his hand back. Raph had a fever. Turtles were cold-blooded and not supposed to get fevers, but since his sons were mutated with human DNA, they didn’t follow that law of nature. His eldest son was sick.
“Raphael,” Splinter said softly, rubbing the snapping turtle’s cheek, “what is wrong?”
Raph wilted into Splinter’s hand. He didn’t want his dad to worry! But he couldn’t lie, not when Pops used his name like that.
“My belly just hurts a little is all…” he answered.
An acidic taste began to rise from his throat, and Raph knew what that meant. He snatched a cup of water from the table and took a gulp to keep the sensation at bay.
“You sure, Raph?” Donnie asked, pushing his glasses up to examine his older brother.
“Yeah,” Leo agreed. He leaned on top of Donnie to get closer. “You look greener than normal.”
Raph shook his head quickly and stuttered, “I’m o-o—urk!”
The snapping turtle slammed his hands over his nose and mouth. The smells were too much. He shouldn’t have shaken his head that fast. The acidic taste was getting worse. Raph couldn’t fight it any longer. He ran to the bathroom, vaguely aware of Splinter calling out to him.
Raph barely lifted the toilet seat up before his stomach finally gave the great lurch. Sharp, vile, and burning from the bottom of his throat to the tip of his nose, he retched as his stomach contents emptied into the bowl. Tears pricked at the poor child’s eyes from the pain and humiliation. The smell was more foul than any stink he’d given off in his life, and the I-just-puked-stink he was giving off now was awful. A hand rested on his shell as the vomiting eased to dry heaves. Raph looked up to see Splinter frowning in concern.
“Let’s brush your teeth and get you back to bed,” Splinter said, lifting his son to his feet.
Raph wiped at his mouth, grimacing at the sick that soaked into his sleeve. His mouth felt fresher after brushing his teeth, but his stomach still rebelled against his body and he was tired. Splinter carried the snapping turtle to his room, replaced his soiled sweatshirt with comfy pajamas, and tucked him into bed.
“I-I couldn’t hold it in anymore,” Raph said shakily. “Pops, why’m I sick?”
“It’s okay, Red,” Splinter placed a hand on the snapping turtle’s shoulder. “Sometimes we just get sick and need help getting better. And right now it looks like you have a stomach bug that needs to be taken care of.”
“I hate bugs!” Raph shuddered. Bugs were as bad as puppets!
“I know you do,” Splinter laughed. “I’ll find something that will help get rid of it. Just sit tight and rest.” He patted Raph’s head then left his son’s room. He saw the other three turtles loitering just outside the doorway. “Purple, Blue, Orange, I need you three to keep an eye on Red for a little while. He isn’t feeling well, and I’m going to get him something to help with his stomach. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
Donnie, Leo, and Mikey watched Splinter throw on his “Randall” disguise and slip out of the Lair. The three gave each other a nod before splitting up. Donnie headed to the living room, Leo went to the laundry room, and Mikey dove into the bedrooms. It wasn’t often that they got sick with anything beyond a cold, but the turtles knew how to help make their big brother feel better.
Raph rolled over in his bed with a groan. His belly felt awful! Every little movement made him want to—“Blergh!”—made him hurl. Why did he feel like this? He was just fine yesterday! Now he was puking, aching, dizzy, and tired. He couldn’t tell if the sharp odor in the air was vomit or his sick-stink. The snapping turtle closed his eyes, curling up in a ball and wanting Splinter to come back already.
When something soft thumped against his head, Raph cracked an eye open. Mikey was tossing stuffed animals and pillows onto his bed. Donnie tied the bag in his trashcan, replaced it, and carried the sick away with a pair of kitchen tongs. Leo stumbled in with his arms laden with blankets and sheets. Raph slowly pulled himself to sit upright and stared at his brothers with concern.
“Guys, Pops said I’ve got a stomach bug,” the eldest turtle warned. “You’re gonna get sick too if you’re here!” The last thing he wanted was his little brothers to catch what he had.
“Dad told us to keep an eye on you,” Donnie shrugged, booting up his secondhand laptop as he sat at Raph’s side. “So we’re making a blanket fort to watch movies in.”
“We’re not gonna watch you be sick and be bored at the same time,” Leo said from where he stood on the edge of Raph’s bed, hanging blankets and sheets in a tent overhead. “So pick a good movie before Donnie plays a documentary or something else lame.”
Donnie glared up at his younger twin but did nothing beyond that. It was very telling how concerned he was for their big brother that he didn’t start arguing with Leo that his documentaries weren’t lame.
“But I don’t want you guys puking up your spleens,” Raph countered.
His belly really hurt from all the retching, and his brothers didn’t need to go through that. Speaking of, Raph pitched forward as his stomach once again revolted against him. He dry-heaved into the waste bin Donnie shoved into his hands.
“Do you really want us to go?” Mikey asked sadly. His eyes shined from his best puppy-dog pout.
“No…,” Raph mumbled. He took one look at his baby brother, saw all the effort his siblings were putting into helping him feel better, and replaced the trashcan clutched to his chest with a teddy bear. The snapping turtle felt awful and scared and didn’t want to be alone. He wanted his brothers to stay.
Mikey immediately brightened. He climbed up onto the bed to rearrange the pillows and stuffed animals around the fort. What good was a blanket fort if it wasn’t comfy? Leo dropped a blanket over each of his brothers’ shoulders, and all four drew closer together as Donnie started a Jupiter Jim movie. Raph lay on a pillow incline, pulling his blanket up to cover everything but his eyes. Donnie and Leo lay on either side of him, and Mikey draped himself over the snapping turtle’s spikey shell. Raph finally felt warm.
It wasn’t until an hour later, when Jupiter Jim and Red Fox were separated by alien robot vampires, that Raph felt his stomach flop once again. He shot out of the pillow fort and tumbled out of bed for the trashcan set just by the edge. Mikey fell back with a shout, but Donnie caught him without hesitation. The snapping turtle retched and dry-heaved. He just wanted to be better already! A sob escape from the snapping turtle as he tightened his grip on the trashcan. Leo slipped down from the bed and rubbed Raph’s trembling shoulders.
That was the scene Splinter walked into when he returned to the Lair—Raph sobbing with Leo at his side, Mikey and Donnie fighting tears of their own as they clung to each other, and all of them turning to him as though he had the answer to end this suffering. It was true that the rat mutant’s arms were laden with plastic bags filled with bottles of ginger ale, a special rehydration drink, and liquid Pepto-Bismol. However, he wasn’t sure if any of them would work for a mutated snapping turtle, but he had to try for the sake of his ailing child. Splinter placed the bags on the ground then knelt by Raph’s side.
“Purple, Blue, Orange, go wash your hands,” Splinter ordered gently. “I’ll take over from here.” After watching Donnie and Mikey slip off of the bed and trudge slowly after Leo out of the room, Splinter focused completely on Raph and hefted the snapping turtle into his arms. “Alright, Little Red, back into bed. I’ve got some medicine and drinks that will help your belly feel better.”
“What is it?” Raph whimpered, balking at the thought of drinking anything regardless of how thirsty he felt. He’d just puke it back up again!
“The pharmacist said to take one capful of this medicine every hour to help manage the puking,” Splinter explained, laying Raph back inside the pillow fort, “and to drink some ginger ale and this special juice to help keep you hydrated.” He poured some ginger ale into a cup on the bedside table, handing it and a small medicine cup full of pink liquid to his son. “Take small sips.”
Raph held the medicine cup to his mouth, squeezed his eyes shut, and gulped it down. He gaged on the taste—like those heart candies they had found in the dumpsters after Valentine’s Day—and immediately sipped the ginger ale. The fizzy drink was welcomed, soothing his throat and dry mouth.
Now all Raph felt now was tired. His eyes grew heavier by the second, and with Splinter rubbing his head and humming, the snapping turtle didn’t stand a chance for staying awake. He sank into the pillows and stuffed animals that had remained from the emergency exit he made, and a blanket was tucked around his shoulders. It wasn’t long before Raph was fully asleep.
After he was sure his son was asleep, Splinter closed up the fort as best he could and left to check on Donnie, Leo, and Mikey. They had been worried about their brother when he had sent them out earlier, and they deserved an update. He didn’t need to search for them for very long. They were sitting across the atrium in Leo’s doorway, huddled together with their eyes glued on Raph’s room.
“You three did a very good job watching over Red while I was gone,” Splinter praised his children. He smiled at each of them. “He is sleeping now, so I want you all to be very quiet for him.”
“That should be easy enough,” Donnie said. It was easy enough for him to tinker quietly in his budding lab, and surely his younger brothers had some games in the arcade that wouldn’t cause disruption to Raph’s sleep.
“Is Raphie gonna be okay, Dad?” Mikey asked.
Leo followed up by asking, “And is what he has contagious?”
“He should be better in a day or two with plenty of rest,” Splinter said. “However, I don’t know how contagious he is at the moment. Don’t touch your eyes or mouths after being around Red without washing your hands. Did you all wash them like I told you?” He sighed in relief when he received three nods. “Good.”
Hours later, Raph woke up feeling better than he had that morning. His stomach was still cramping, and his body still ached; but the snapping turtle didn’t feel exhausted after just waking up. His mouth felt dry, though. He saw a bottle of the special juice Splinter got for him on his nightstand. Picking up the bottle, Raph read “Pedialyte Cherry Punch” on the label. He didn’t really care for cherries but, remembering his father’s advice, took small sips anyway. He still felt like puking, but he managed to get down a few mouthfuls before putting the bottle back on the nightstand.
A moment later, his father and little brothers peeked into his room. Mikey carried a plate with a slice of perfectly tanned plain toast and an unpeeled banana and placed it beside the bottle on the nightstand. Splinter gave the snapping turtle a once over.
“How are you feeling, Red?” Splinter asked.
“Still kinda puke-y,” Raph said slowly, “but I feel a little better.”
“It may take a day or two until that feeling goes away, son,” Splinter said. “Have some more medicine and try to eat some food.”
As Raph grimaced at the taste of Pepto-Bismol and slowly ate the toast to get rid of its flavor, Donnie, Leo, and Mikey crowded in front of him. They looked up at him with varying degrees of worry.
“Is there anything we can do for you, big brother?” Donnie asked.
Raph picked at the hem of the blanket pooling around his legs and shyly mumbled, “…Stay for a while?”
Splinter chuckled as his sons climbed onto Raph’s bed and reorganized the blanket fort so it would be more accommodating to the four turtle mutants and their rat-dad. Raph truly felt content when his father joined them and placed him on his lap, blanket wrapped over his head and teddy bear clutched to his chest. Donnie picked up the laptop from where it was tucked between the nightstand and bed and started up the Jupiter Jim movie from the beginning.
Raph felt lucky to have a family that cared so much about him. For the next two days, he had been sick. His brothers and Splinter were always checking in on him, making sure he was staying hydrated and eating, rubbing his shell or head when he did puke, and keeping him company when he asked. The snapping turtle got stir-crazy at times from how smothering his little brothers could be (He had to argue with Mikey to get out of bed to use the toilet!), but he knew it was all out of love. Raph usually did the same thing and coddled Donnie, Leo, and Mikey excessively if they so much as stubbed a toe. He was just happy that his brothers never caught what he had.
However, a few weeks after Raph recovered from his stomach bug, something weird happened with their dad. Splinter caught a fever, cranked the AC down to its lowest setting, and shaved off all of his fur. It was the most terrifying sight any of the young boys had ever borne witness to. Then he started attacking, cuddling, singing way off key, writing crossover fanfiction, and just freaking out all of the young turtles. It only stopped when they all yelled at Splinter to act normal again. He almost immediately complied! This sickness was later dubbed the rat-flu, and it would plague the five mutants more than any other sickness they would ever contract.

Frostbite Chapter 4- Broken Promises
AN: Happy Friday everyone! I hope you all enjoy Chapter 4. :D
Previous Chapter: https://pepperimps01.tumblr.com/post/646112113682710528/frostbite-recovery-chapter-3
Summary: Casey and Donnie struggle with their feelings. Leo reunites with the new mutant, and finds more info about them.
~~~
Casey grunted and grumbled as he wandered downstairs, still in his pajamas. Predictably dad wasn't in the kitchen, so he fixed himself and Riley a bowl of cornflakes. Dad was rarely ever at home, usually cruising through different bars to stay occupied, so Casey had to step up.  He wasn't really a cook, not that he would have time to make a meal.
"Riley, breakfast!" He hollered, running his hand through his messy curls.
The chipper girl skipped down the steps two at a time. She plopped down, inhaling her cornflakes like she hadn't eaten in days. She was already dressed in a blouse and skirt, the uniform required at her middle school.
Casey joined her, eating his cereal a bit slower as he fixed his hair. Not that he cared too much about his appearance.
"You know a comb would be more effective." Riley teased, mouthful of milk and cereal. "Something really weird happened last night. I almost thought it was a dream but it couldn't be."
Casey raised an eyebrow.
"I ordered food from Murakami's. I was so hungry, you know."  She continued. "And I walked home with my noodles and these assholes started attacking me."
Casey dropped his spoon so loudly it made a clanging noise. "What? Did they hurt you?"
She scoffed. "No, that's the best part. Sure, I was holding my own, but this guy with his sick karate moves saved me! And Sparky too! My pet racoon."
He wanted to tell her that a raccoon didn't qualify as a pet, and heck, he didn't even see the little rodent, but he was too concerned about his sister's wellbeing. "You're lying. You just did your homework last night."
"Except you know I never do my homework." Riley said snarkily. "No...he was really nice. Actually he was a bit strange. Donatello was his name." She perked up. "You wouldn't believe what he-"
"Shut up Ri, stop talking nonsense." Casey rolled his eyes. "Get ready for school. April's walkin' with us today."
"But he-"
"Riley!"
Riley frowned, slumping over, but complying as she grabbed her backpack moodily.
He chewed at his lip. He knew he was being a total jerk, but he also wanted his sister to just be lying. She was known to tell tales but he hated being so dismissive. He'd have to ask later.
After getting dressed and actually combing through his hair, he heard a knock at the door.
"I'll get it!" Riley shouted, clumsily leaping over a bookbag, nearly crashing into the wall as she ran towards the front door. "Hi April!"
"Hiya Riley," The redhead said. "You guys ready to go?"
"I am. Yo Casey, are you?"
"Yep." He grabbed his bag.
"Let's go then."
The trio headed out the door, Riley chattering mindlessly about something.
"I'm gonna stay late today." She said. "Baseball practice."
"Baseball?" April looked at her quizzically. "I thought you played hockey."
"I play both. Duh." Riley rolled her eyes, avoiding a crack in the sidewalk. "I'm the best player on the team, even though I'm the only girl. Hockey..." She cringed. "I prefer to watch, I think." She stopped, crouching down to watch a raccoon scurry through some trash.
"Come on Riley, we're gonna be late." Casey said.
"But he's so cute." Riley cooed. "I missed you Sparky!"
"How do you even know that's the same possum?"
"Racoon. And I just know." She scratched his furry head. The creature's big black eyes widened, accepting the pets happily.
"Ugh, no, he could have diseases or rabies or something-" Casey grabbed her by the backpack straps and pulled her away. Ignoring his sister's struggles, he looked at April: "Did you do Ms. Thompson's homework?"
"Yes, last night." She hummed, glancing back at him. "No, you can't copy it."
"Damn. Can you help me with it?"
April chuckled. "Sure thing."
"You're the best, Red."
She smiled, taking his hand in hers. "I've missed you, Casey."
"I've missed you too."
"Guys!" Riley interrupted. "Stop ogling and take me to school already!"
They blushed, April easily slipping her hand back in her pocket as if nothing had happened between them.
Thankfully, her school was just around the corner, giving him and April plenty of time to talk on their way to the high school.
"So...Red," Casey said, fixing his hair self consciously. "There's a new Beetlewoman movie comin' out on Friday."
April nodded. "There is."
"I heard it's even better than the last one."
She hummed. "I heard that too."
"Do you wanna go with me?"
"Are you asking me on a date?" She asked bluntly.
"That depends, are you gonna say yes?"
April stared at him for a moment, contemplating her answer carefully.
"It's a no, isn't it?" He sighed, defeated. "I could have sworn this would be the day."
"Jones," She said firmly. "Casey, you know I like you a lot."
"I have an annoying feeling that there's gonna be a 'but' somewhere..."
"But, I need to focus on myself right now. Dating is just another thing to worry about. My life is crazy enough." She laughed weakly. "You do know I like you and Donnie, right?"
Casey made a face. "What does this have to do with Donnie?"
"Everything." She looked away wistfully. "You'll figure it out eventually."
"Whatever you say, Red. Come on, the bell's about to ring."
~•~
Peace and quiet was all Donatello craved. The brief moments of silence he received when working on a project were always savored. Even as a curious little tot, he loved blissful quiet. Which was difficult when living in the same sewers as three other rambunctious turtles- but he made do.
Hunched over his desk, he carefully followed the instructions written down. Deja vu was a common occurrence now, and it certainly didn't help with the gelatinous blob form of Timothy watching him work.
"Don't worry Tim," He said through a yawn. "I won't rest until you're cured, buddy."
The floating eyeballs blinked back at him. Looking at him too long was sure to make anyone squeamish, but Donnie could only feel guilt and pity.
"Nothing will stop me from-"
"Yo D!"
Donnie massaged his temples, recognizing the voice immediately. For once, he wished it was Mikey who had interrupted his work.
"Don't you have school?"
"What are you, my mom?" Casey scoffed. "Nah, school's out." He flopped onto the lab table, sitting directly on Donnie's notes.
"What do you want now, Jones?"  He still couldn't forget his brother's teasing, and he wasn't looking forward to dealing with his own feelings. If they caught him talking with Jones, there was no doubt they would make fun of him.
"Oh, nothing." Casey took a seat on the table. "Check it." He slid a disc towards Donnie, who examined it. He couldn't believe what he was looking at- and that it was real.
"No. Way." He breathed. "The Electric Skullz's Dynamite album?"  He had to bite his tongue in order to prevent himself from squealing.
Casey grinned. "You know it." He placed his hands in his lap, thinking. "I figured we could...listen to it sometime. Together! Since we both like it." He paused, scrunching his face. "Stupid idea, probably."
Donnie's features softened. This kid...he did something nice for him. He didn't have to, but he did. And Donnie was touched. But also midly infuriated. How dare Jones make it so difficult to hate him?
"It's not stupid.. That's what friends do, don't they? Listen to music together?"
Friends...it sounded weird out loud. Not that either teen disliked it.
Casey raised an eyebrow. "Wait...we're friends?"
Donnie shrugged. "I don't know. But arguing is exhausting. And you had a point. We both love this band, so why not?"
"Sounds good to me."
Donnie eagerly popped the disc into his homemade music player, turning the volume up. Timothy pitifully stared through the glass container, as if he wanted to jam too.
"Listen Don, I meant to, well," He rubbed the back of his neck. "Talk to you as well."
Donnie stopped the music abruptly. He glanced at Casey, who looked uncomfortable. "Yeah?"
"Oh- er- uh." This was proving to be more difficult as he stared at the tall turtle's mahogany brown eyes. "I don't hate you."
"Thank...you?"
"No, wait. I feel like we got off on the wrong foot. Ever since we've met. But I don't want to fight anymore. I like talking to you about music. You're kinda cool."
Donnie didn't say anything.
"Red doesn't want us to fight. And if you do care about her like I know you do, then you'd respect what she wants. Right?"
"Yes, I agree. The trouble is..." Donnie looked down guiltily. "I don't know what I feel. About us." He gestured at himself, then at Casey.
"You don't have any answers?"
"No. For once, I don't."
Casey exhaled. "I don't either."
Donnie hummed, waiting for anything to ease the awkwardness. Before he had a chance to return to his work, Casey spoke up again.
"My sister said something weird." He rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably.
"Oh?"
"She said some guy named Donatello saved her from some creeps. Is that true? Or was she just makin' stuff up?"
Donnie paused, a small smile revealing. He looked as if he was debating if he should tell Casey or not. "She wasn't. I did, though I didn't know she was your sister at the time." Donnie replied honestly. "Riley, right?"
"She didn't mention you were a turtle though." He joked.
"She didn't seem to mind."
"Guess those things don't really matter, huh? It's all about...what's in there." He patted Donnie's scratched up plasteron. Brown eyes met darker brown, and he backed up slowly, unsure if he should move closer. "Sorry. But thanks for helping her. She means everything to me. I'm sure you know how that feels."
Donnie's breath was caught in his throat. He gulped.  "I...of course."
"Oh shoot." Casey checked his phone as if nothing had happened. "Sorry dude, I promised Raph I'd ride bikes with him. Catch ya later?"
"Yeah!" His voice cracked. "I'd love that."
As Casey left with a cheeky grin and wave, Donnie felt a sinking feeling in his stomach.
He glanced at the jar of guts that once resembled another teenaged boy. "Tim, I think I'm in trouble."
~•~
That sinking feeling in his stomach didn't leave even hours later. Donnie had tried to push it off, move forward and continue like normal. It wasn't even a big deal. He saved Casey's sister, and that was that. He would have saved any other human just the same. Then why did he feel so weird? He wouldn't lie, he wondered how Casey would react if he knew. Would he be proud of him? Maybe their friendship could expand and their infamous rivalry could finally end.
They had more in common than either boy had realized. They enjoyed the same music and food at least, and according to 'bro code' that's all one needed in a friendship. They did have fun bonding over the Electric Skullz...
But then there was April. She clearly didn't seem enthusiastic in dating either of them. Donnie's pursuit of the beautiful redhead seemed to lose interest as time went on. Each look she gave him was not one of admiration, but of pity. He still liked her a lot though.
'I don't have a chance with her.'
Did Casey? Casey had the added benefit of being human. But he was also charming, handsome, had curious chocolate brown eyes and...and...
A really cute smile with little dimples on each cheek. And confidence to boot, something Donnie had always secretly admired.
Donnie rolled over in back, staring at the wall. What was he even saying? Casey wasn't...he didn't.
'Don't think that. You're not gay. You like April. You like April. You like April.'
He heard Raphael's voice in his mind. 'Who are you even trying to convince? Me, or yourself?'
Who was he trying to convince?
He slid out of bed as quietly as possible. He wasn't going to get any sleep at this rate.  Might as well work on the retromutagen and get his mind off Casey for once.  And it would be less of a time waster than staring at the ceiling and tossing and turning.
'Casey's still human, you know.' The little voice reminded him as he stepped out of his room, blinking blearily. 'You've got the same chance of impressing him as you do April.'
"I know." He muttered under his breath, this time aloud. "I don't like him like that. He's just a friend. I think?"
If he was human, he wouldn't have this problem. Maybe he could have dated them both. Though even for humans that was considered taboo.
He shook his head, glancing at the lab clock. 3:32am. No point in going back to sleep. His laptop had been left open too from a few hours ago. He sighed, typing into his old friend Google what exactly his feelings were.
Article after article, the only sound being the ticking clock, he found his answer. But not in the way he expected.
What is...bisexuality?
Hamato Donatello knew a lot of things. But one thing he was always going to struggle with- was romance. The best course of action was to simply avoid these emotions and put them off until he couldn't take it anymore.. Little did he know, he wasn't the only turtle struggling. His hand stopped moving the mouse, hearing shuffling noises from outside. He came to recognize each individual footsteps his brothers and father made. Mikey usually had a bounce in his step, Raph dragged his feet or stomped about. Splinter's paws were very quiet and had his tail dragging behind him. But these steps were nearly silent, as if he was standing on his tip toes, eager to not wake the remaining members of his family.
"Leo?" He uttered, careful to keep his voice low. He didn't need to turn around, he knew exactly who it was.
But when he saw the distraught, bloodshot eyes of his oldest brother, he moved closer. Leo flinched.
"Leo?" He repeated. "Why are you awake?"
"I couldn't sleep." His voice sounded hoarse. "And you?"
"Same as you, I guess." Donnie quickly slammed his laptop shut. "You look exhausted."
"I can't stop thinking about her." Leo murmured, nearly inaudible.
"Her?" Donnie stared blankly, wondering if Leo was sleepwalking and somehow stumbled inside the lab. "Karai?"
He shook his head. "Sorry, I'm talking nonsense aren't I?"
"A little bit, yeah."
Leo chuckled softly, then turned somber. "I was thinking about the mutant. I'm worried. I mean, she could cause some serious destruction."
Donnie's eyes widened in realization. "You were going to try to find it...her, weren't you? That's why you're wandering around at 4am."
Leo didn't answer. He didn't have to. His eyes told Donnie everything.
"You're dead on your feet. You definitely shouldn't go searching for a deranged mutant when you can barely stand. And alone, of all the crazy things. Come on, Leo, let's go back to sleep."
Surprisingly, Leonardo agreed, as if Donnie was the older sibling and not the other way around. "You're right. I don't know what I was thinking. But you should sleep too."
Donnie relaxed, grateful that there wasn't an argument involved. "I think I will."
"I'll walk with you to your room."
"And you promise you'll go to bed?"
"I promise." Leo vowed, leading the way back to their individual rooms.
Donnie slipped inside his room, practically melting into his bed, exhausted. His eyes fluttered close.
"Oyasumi." His brother whispered.
"Hai, oyasumi." He mumbled under the blankets, instantly comforted.
"See you in the morning, brother." Leo tucked him in gently. "I'll be back as soon as I can."
And for the first time in his life, Leo had broken a promise to his brother.
~•~
The moonlight glowed over the cityscape. Leo tumbled to the ground of the rooftops, checking the area, knowingly being followed. He wasn't afraid, but he knew he had to keep alert. This enemy was unknown, and if he made one false error, he couldn't rely on his brothers for help. Each sense perked up anxiously, waiting for any sign of attack.
Another movement came from behind. He stopped abruptly, skidding to a halt.
"Show yourself." He commanded, one katana raised high, its brother still in its holder.
"Oh, but that would make things less fun..."
Leonardo turned around fiercely. "Every moment you hide in the shadows you only prove your cowardice."
"Cowardice? We'll see about that. You're the one who's afraid."
"I'm not afraid." He said defiantly.
"You soon will be..."
And then it crawled forward. Slowly, claws stepped towards him, revealing the hidden mutant reptile that resembled a crocodile. Her voice, though menacing, still had a feminine tone that made his heart race. Her body was a beautiful emerald green, with piercing gold eyes and cream undertones. She flicked her long, thick tail back, fangs curling into a sinister smirk. Though she was bigger than he was, he wasn't about to show any sign of fear. She then circled him like a predator with her prey. Though he had dealt with much deadlier villains, he still felt uneasy.
"Miss me?" She snarled. "It's been a while."
Leo narrowed his eyes. He recognized her of course, though they had never spoken. Their last fight had ended less than pleasant. Both he and Mikey had to make a hasty retreat. Leo had regretted it ever since.
"I don't think I ever caught your name." He growled. "If you have one."
"I didn't throw it." She said, then relented. "Nova."
"What are you?"
She licked her lips. "The last thing you see before you die. The banter was cute, sugar, but I'm hungry. That's all I need."
Beyond her wild eyes was a look of fear, and true hunger. She wasn't lying, she looked as though she hadn't eaten in days.
"Nova please. I'm- I'm Leonardo."
She pounced forward, pinning the turtle to the ground. "So long, Leonardo."
"I don't want to hurt you." He wheezed.
"What a shame, because I so want to hurt you. Your pathetic attempt at kindness only shows how weak you truly are."
"Nova..."
With his free leg, Leo kicked his shin upwards to hit her underbelly. She yelped, falling backwards. Her malnourishment was proof she needed help. But clearly she didn't want any.
"So much for not hurting me." She spat, acid leaving her lips and barely avoiding Leo's toes as he lept away. When she moved closer towards him, he softened slightly. He avoided staring at her shark like teeth.
He held out a hand. "I meant what I said. I can help you. Food, shelter, a chance to be with other mutants. I don't want to fight you."
For a brief moment, she looked as if she was going to comply, even eagerly with his convincing tone. Her muzzle grazed his cheek, vulnerability clear in her gold eyes. Then she turned away viciously, reconsidering.
"I don't want anything to do with you, Leonardo. Any hope of happiness is finished., My humanity is gone. I'm a freak, like you." She spat. "I had everything. Fame, fortune, my beauty..." Her claws extended. "All of it is gone."
He shook his head. "No it isn't. There is still hope. I promise, I'll help you."
She rolled her eye slits. "How very noble of you." Her tongue slid out, resembling two separated spiky parts.
"It's not just about being noble. It's about doing what's right." Leo held out his hand once more, echoing the wisdom of Captain Ryan. "Are you willing, Nova?"
"I..."
Snapping her jaws back, she raised a claw to swipe at him. He flinched, waiting for a swift but agonizing feeling. But nothing happened. She had moved away. He didn't even need to draw his swords.
"That's your answer. See you soon...sugar." She hissed, disappearing into the shadows once more.
"Wait!" He cried. But she was gone.
TMNT 2003/2K3 Headcanon: Crying - (Raphael)
Feel free to scroll past this first part if you’re not interested in my silly rambling and nonsense. I won’t mind. Promise. ;)
Alrighty then, lockdown has officially started here. :/ *Unenthusiastic streamers fly* Oh well, look what we have all the time in the world for: WRITING! *Enthusiastic streamers fly* Not too much extra to add in this regard since the last headcanon (thanks a bunch for the likes btw, guys :D ), so I guess we’ll just get right into it. :)
Please bear in mind that I’m SUPER rusty! Haven’t written in ages so there are bound to be typos and all matter of general errors scattered throughout the post. Don’t pet them! They bite!
Anyhoo~ Despite attempting to create and share with the goal in mind to uplift spirits, I decided to start on a rather upsetting subject (PLEASE DON’T LEAVE! They end on happy notes ;) ) because, Imma just come and say it, I enjoy seeing my favourite characters shed tears (not for just any old reason -their personality plays a huge role in this- and CERTAINLY not for sadistic reasons, land sakes no! But… well, you’ll see~ ;) ) It makes me all gooey and fuzzy inside to see them display such raw emotion and I just wanna leap into the TV screen to hug and console them. I dunno why. Maybe I’m nuts like that. (Remembers Raph crying at the farm when Leo was badly injured and wishes she could just hug them all and take away the pain) Oh well, if you enjoy visualizing the same, then *High Fives*. :)
So yeah, if you read the title, you’ll know this is based on the 2003/2k3 series (my favs). Hope you all enjoy~ :D Grab tissues cause sad turts ahead! :’(
Jibber jabber stops here~
TO THE HEADCANONS~~~~
Tumblr media
~RAPHAEL~
– With his infamous hotheadedness and quick capacity for battle, it’s of course natural at first for one to expect Big Bad Raphie-Boy to be completely opposed to the very thought of crying. He is the resident ‘tough guy’ after all.
– However, this notion couldn’t be farther from the truth: sure, he can be brash, quick to temper and lash out at those that give him enough incentive to, but underneath that rockhard exterior beats the heart of a real softie, and when something truly upsets that tender muscle, you can bet Mr. Hothead’s not going to try too hard to keep the tears at bay.
– He’s as passionate as he is headstrong, and reining in such powerful emotions proves to be difficult at most times for him, so out of the four of them, and given the right circumstances, Raph can be surprisingly easy to get the tears flowing.
-- He’s no crybaby by a long shot, mind you, but he also knows that holding back on the waterworks is pointless and makes one just feel worse in the long run. If you’re going to cry, just cry. Simple as that.
-- Like all of his brothers, Red can’t handle the thought of losing any of his family and close friends. It tears him apart inside and he’ll desperately attempt to protect and prevent anything terrible from happening to them, but when it does, he’s an emotional wreck and doesn’t always know how to handle his distress.
– His initial reaction is to be by their sides before becoming outraged, and depending on the different situations, it’s not uncommon for him to also nag and pass remarks at the injured brother(s). It’s the only real way of expressing his fear of losing them before dampness starts forming in his eyes.
– Despite his tough guy front, he’s not against crying in front of his family and friends at all. He knows his place and doubts a few tears will have them seeing  him in a different light, particularly his father/master and brothers for they’ve seen the worst in him on many occasions.
– It’s only when a particularly harsh meltdown wishes to happen does Raph choose to spare them the sideshow; he knows it’s not a pretty sight, so before the sniffling begins, he leaves the Lair and heads topside for some much needed air.
– He chooses the nearby rooftops as his destination; the ideal location to let go of the ever building waves of raw emotion that continue to grip at his chest, and by the time he makes it up the fire escape ladder, he spares little time letting out a rough growl in frustration, kicking an air vent a couple of times for good measure.
 -- With some rage and frustration now out of his system, he heads on over to the brick wall and turns his back to it, roughly sliding down into a sitting position and exhales a dismal sigh. As he subconsciously replays the earlier events through his mind, he finally allows the next phase of his sorrow to surface unbridled.
-- He dolefully holds his head in one hand and balances it on a single knee pad as the tears now begin to flow freely.
– They instantly soak into his mask, and he grits his teeth as he feels the surges of emotion wrack his entire body. He doesn’t characteristically whimper or sob when crying, but he coughs a lot, and his nostrils leak like a faucet, forcing him to frequently sniff and snort just in order to breathe. This is the very reason why he refuses to really break down in front of the the others; not because of his tenacity, but because he simply finds the whole affair gross. His family certainly didn’t need to hear him constantly hacking up a lung and sounding like an untuned trumpet every time he blew his nose.
– The episode doesn’t last too long, though, much to his delight, and after some more thorough nasal clearing, Raph then wipes at his still somewhat wet eyes and mask before drawing out another -now exhausted- sigh.
-- He’d begin gradually twirling a single sai around whilst he collected his thoughts. It felt more natural to keep his hands busy than have them being static when he was feeling this way. As his demeanor altered, so did the actions he performed with it.
– He wouldn’t return to his family just yet for there was still some brooding left to be done... At least that was what he’d convinced himself he was doing. He wanted a clear head when he returned so for now, he’d remain in place on the rooftop in the crisp air with the city bursting with life just below him.
-- He had to admit, it was certainly the best place for him to be with his thoughts. Comforting in fact. A true New Yorker at heart.
BONUS EXTRA~
– Aside from having everyone special to him perish, one of Raph’s greatest fears is his inability to fully control his own temper. On more than one occasion has it gotten out of hand and thus resulted in him injuring his own brothers, and it had shaken him to the core each time.
– He’s come to the realization that he is his own worst enemy when it comes to reigning in his own inner rage, and it uneases him immensely that it could happen again and he’s fully aware that the probability is higher than he cares to admit. The more he concerns himself with it, the more it upsets him and thus, the tears of frustration start.
– Fortunately, his bros are there for him and can tell when he’s feeling low about it. They know the best course of action is to have a light-hearted conversation about it with him and offer their reassurances... With Mikey of course adding his own two cents on the matter in his unique Mikey style, which usually involves poking fun at his brother in red and causing Raph to go from broody to enraged in record breaking time. Just how it should be.
– Not only is Raph A-okay with crying himself, but he’s often first on the emotional support committee to offer the shoulder of comfort to his friends, amazingly enough, and he’s actually pretty decent at it too. Though, not for absolutely everyone; he has his limitations when he knows someone’s really just blubbering for attention.
– He wasn’t always so accepting of shedding tears, though: as a very young Turtle Tot, he often thought of it as being too ‘babyish’ for him to do and thus despised it whenever something happened to cause him to tear up.
– It took Master Splinter a rather surprisingly lengthy amount of time to change his perception of crying. No amount of explanations on how it was a perfectly natural expression of emotion would sway his son.
– It got so out of hand that Raph would be in utter denial about crying right in front of his father, even while the latter would be staring at his tear-stained face directly in front of him. “M‘not cryin’,” the little Turtle would sniff. “Cryin’s fah sissies.”
-- Splinter could only sigh and shake his head as he knelt down to embrace his son. When could he feel that Raphael would not fight the closeness, he’d give him the same lecture again, and Raph would finally succumb to his emotions and sob into his father’s robe whilst Splinter comfortingly rubbed his shell.
-- He could only guess that his words finally got through to his son for ever since that day, Raph’s entire attitude had altered for the better on the subject.
BONUS EXTRA EXTRA FEMALE READER OR S/O EDITION~ (Can also use an OC/FC insert if you wish, up to you)
From the moment you entered the Lair, you could clearly see something was up; Mikey was nursing an obvious wrist injury with a bag of frozen peas and hovering around Donny’s work area, complaining about the swelling to the purple-banded Turtle, who appeared to be paying little attention towards his ‘younger’ sibling as his back was turned.
"Hi, (Y/N).”
You visibly jumped at the voice behind you and briskly turned, only to meet Leonardo’s placid form, and he swiftly apologized for the start.
After the formal greeting, you gestured with a thumb in confusion at the former scene with an added, “Do I want to know?”
The leader’s facial features altered to a more serious aspect. “The end result of testing Raph’s patience,” he offered, which instantly had you more than a little concerned. Sure, Mikey could come off as being annoying, but to go so far as to physically harm him?
“Are you sure it’s not worse than ‘just a sprain’?” You overheard the injured brother asking Donny, whose focus remained on a contraption of sorts you couldn’t quite make out on his desk.
“Yes, Mikey, you’ll live,” he responded with just a hint of weariness. “But no swinging your nunchucks around for a coupla days,” which was met with a typical whine in response from his patient.
“It’s really not as bad as he makes it out to be,” Leo then added, turning your attention back towards him. Though you didn’t express it, you were grateful to hear the good news.
"Where is he now?”
“Topside most likely.” Of course. It didn’t surprise you in the least that Raph had chosen to head there and you quickly set a course for the surface. “Need an escort?” The leader in blue offered, to which you politely declined. You knew he needed no further explanation.
As you pushed back the manhole cover and made your way towards the nearest fire escape ladder, you were unable to put aside the various speculations as to why your special Turtle would hurt his own brother... Well, you would be kidding yourself to say you didn’t have at least one very plausible theory in mind, but as you neared the top of the ladder, the guesswork was instantly dropped and replaced with trepidation for you knew how Raph felt about injuring family.
To put it simply, you were going to be dealing with a very dejected Turtle, and true to form, as you peered over the top of the building, the iconic emerald green hide and red mask tails met your sight.
This was Raph’s favorite spot to gather his thoughts after all, so it was a no-brainer decision to begin the search there, and it was clear as day that it was exactly what he was doing for he made no effort to acknowledge your presence as he remained seated against the wall in a slouching position and gaze locked out front.
As expected, he appeared to be moping. “Hey, Raphie,” you greeted, clambering over the wall.
You were unable to tell if he had been aware you were nearby for he made no prior indication but instead merely replied with a gloomy, “’Sup, Kiddo?” No movement whatsoever.
It amused you whenever he chose to refer to you by that nickname, especially since you were both the same age, but as you ambled on over towards him, you were left anything but amused as your former notion was set in stone when you caught the telltale signs of wet stains under his eyes. “You okay?”
“Peachy.”
It wasn’t the first time you had witnessed ‘ol Red crying, but it didn’t prevent your heart from breaking all the same. Something about seeing the bullheaded bad boy in tears left you in a real state of dismay, so without invitation, you seated yourself next him, affectionately leaning against his side, but before the consoling could begin, you had to gently ask, “You wanna tell me what happened?”
“Ugh, it was so stupid! Mikey wouldn’t quit goin’ on n’ on about beatin’ me in the Battle Nexus tournament and kept rubbin’ it in our faces about becomin’ the champ,” he exclaimed with shockingly little provocation, sniffing loudly. “I jus’ got so sick’ve it this time, an’ it’s not like we neva duked it out before or nothin’ but... I went too far this time, (Y/N), ya know?”
He still refused to look at you as he began to wipe away some fresh tears that were forming in his eyes.
Your assumption had been correct all along; you acknowledged full well how Mikey’s triumphant achievement grated on Raph’s last nerve and how the orange-banded Turtle would seek out every opportunity to gloat about it in a bid to purposely provoke his ‘older’ brother. “Well, you know Mikey, Raph,” you said, not quite sympathizing with the actions he took, but rather offering some support. “He tries to get under your shell on purpose.”
"Yeah, I know, but... Dat’s no reason ta clobber the guy. Not like that, anyway” You noted how his voice gradually lowered grievously and you couldn’t stop yourself from placing your head on his shoulder.
“No, it isn’t, but...” you knew you were grasping at straws by this point, but still offered, “They say it’s not as bad as he makes it out to be.”
He sighed dolefully. “I lost control again, (Y/N),” and you could feel the vibrations beginning to surge through him. “No matta what I do, I jus’... I jus’ can’t...” He trailed off, wracked with emotions as he covered his face with one hand and allowed the tears to fall, a cough slipping here and there.
You heart bled for this boy, and more than anything right then, you longed to relieve him of the pain, so you did the only thing you could think of: be right there by his side, comforting him through the breakdown. “Oh, Raph. It’ll be okay,” you calmly whispered, slinking an arm around his carapace and shoulders, bringing him closer and lightly squeezing his bicep with your free hand. “It’ll be okay.”
He leaned into the much needed support and continued to allow his misery to flow forth. You didn’t mind in the least for it was exactly what he required in order to heal, and you would be there for him every step of the way.
AND THAT’S A WRAP!
ALL THE FEELS!! I EMBARRASS!!
WOOT, that’s Turt number two completed! Sorry it took a little longer than expected; I still feel rusty with sentence structure and all and am not entirely pleased with the outcome, but I did feel an improved ‘flow’ from the first so maybe things are slowly coming back to me? Or maybe it was the scenario; it felt more natural o write than Leo’s... Maybe cause Bloo Boi’s my fav Turt and I felt added pressure with his?
Oh well, Donny Boy’s next~
Thank you all so much for the read and hope you enjoyed~ :D
