Jonathan Wilhelm Discusses the Impact of Chiropractic Care on Posture and Back Pain
Tumblr media
Maintaining good posture is not just about looking poised and confident; it's also crucial for our overall health and well-being. Poor posture can lead to a range of health issues, including back pain, neck pain, headaches and irreversible spinal degenerative changes. In this blog, we will delve into the world of chiropractic care with Dr. Jonathan Wilhelm, a seasoned chiropractic physician, to understand how it can significantly impact our posture and alleviate back pain.
The Significance of Proper Posture
Maintaining proper posture is paramount for preserving proper movement and limiting wear and tear degenerative changes like arthritis and spinal disc disease. Poor posture can lead to a myriad of health issues, such as back pain, neck pain, tension headaches, spinal disc breakdown, and more. Chiropractor Jonathan Wilhelm stresses the importance of good posture and its profound impact on our daily lives.
The Role of Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care revolves around diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders with physical medicine approaches, particularly those concerning the spine. According to Wilhelm, chiropractic adjustments can enhance posture by rectifying spinal fixations and soft tissue compensations, consequently reducing pain and improving overall movement and functionality.  Without proper spinal mobility, you simply cannot have ideal posture, and this is where chiropractic comes into the picture.
Advantages of Chiropractic Care for Posture
Chiropractic care offers numerous benefits for enhancing posture and mitigating back pain:
Spinal Alignment: Chiropractic adjustments aid in aligning the spine, alleviating stress on muscles and joints, thereby enhancing posture and diminishing pain.
Muscle Relaxation: Chiropractic care may influence nerve function, which can relax tense muscles, facilitating improved posture and decreased pain.
Enhanced Range of Motion: Chiropractic adjustments enhance spinal range of motion, leading to improved posture and decreased pain.
Prevention of Future Complications: Regular chiropractic care can help prevent future posture-related problems by maintaining proper spinal mobility.
Tips for Sustaining Good Posture
In addition to chiropractic care, Wilhelm recommends the following tips for maintaining good posture:
Proper Sitting: While seated, keep your feet flat on the floor and your knees at a 90-degree angle. Utilize a chair with adequate low back support to preserve the natural curve of your spine.
Upright Stance: When standing, maintain an upright posture with neck and upper shoulders relaxed, and shoulder blades down and inward . Avoid slouching or leaning forward.
Take Regular Breaks: If you sit for prolonged periods, take breaks to stand up, stretch, and move around.
Engage in Regular Exercise: Regular exercise can bolster the muscles that support good posture.
In Conclusion
Good posture is integral to overall health and well-being. Chiropractic care can play a pivotal role in enhancing posture and alleviating back pain. Dr. Jonathan Wilhelm underscores the significance of maintaining good posture and presents chiropractic care as a natural and effective approach to achieving this objective.

Poor posture and repetitive overuse movements can create dysfunction within the connective tissues of the human movement system (HMS) (Iqbal & Alghadir, 2017), which is why #selfmyofascialrolling can be such a great tool, especially in the case of addressing an #overactivemuscle. But keep in mind that it's just that, a TOOL. Therefore, do you HAVE to use in your training routines? Not at all? In fact, I try my best to use in on my off days and then, on my training days, I'll just focus on my #mobility work. Rolling techniques are supposed to help increase your #rangeofmotion after all. Rolling can be great, but just pick your rolling times wisely. An upright, unilateral hip extension. Is it a reverse lunge? A single leg deadlift? A Pilates scooter? I find that less important than the physiological benefit that the movement provides to the user or client.
Two exercise progression variables we explore in freeFORM education are base of support and range of motion. Since this exercise adds additional support by using the horizontal bar, it is more stable and since it is more stable, a greater range of motion becomes more safely accessible.
Two consequences of this are that the exercise becomes a deeper stretch of the front leg hamstrings and glutes and the rear leg hip flexors. The second and related benefit is that the greater range of motion adds to the eccentric load or the degree to which the hamstrings, glutes and hip flexors decelerate the movement which in turn takes these muscles into a range of relative mechanical disadvantage so they have to work harder.
This eccentric load through a large range of motion provides many benefits but can cause delayed onset muscle soreness for several days after the workout.
Finally, it appears that in the latter reps, the movement is taken off center and a purely sagital plane motion on a slight diagonal angle. This will hit different muscle fibers in the targeted muscles and also load the hip joint in a slightly different way.
I love the term coined by physiotherapist Gary Gray of the @grayinstituteofficial - “Tweakology” refers to the concept of making slight “tweaks” to an exercise to load the tissues in different and novel ways.
Thanks to @mg360.gr for inspiring this discussion.

Arthritis
What is rheumatoid arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that causes chronic inflammation of joints.
RA tends to begin slowly with minor symptoms that come and go, usually on both sides of the body, which progresses over weeks or months.
Symptoms of this chronic condition vary from person to person and can change from day to day. Bouts of RA symptoms are called flare-ups, and inactive periods, when symptoms are less noticeable, are called remission.
Early Signs of Rheumatoid Arthritis
1:Fatigue
You may feel unusually tired well before any other symptoms become obvious. Fatigue can come before the onset of other symptoms in weeks or months.
It may come and go from week to week or day to day. Fatigue is sometimes accompanied by a general feeling of ill health or even depression.
2:Morning stiffness
Morning stiffness is often an early sign of arthritis. Stiffness that lasts for a few minutes is usually a symptom of a form of arthritis that can worsen over time without proper treatment.
Stiffness that lasts for several hours is generally a symptom of inflammatory arthritis and is typical of RA. You may also feel stiffness after any period of prolonged inactivity like napping or sitting.
3:Joint stiffness
Tumblr media
Stiffness in one or more of the smaller joints is a common early sign of RA. This can occur at any time of day, whether you’re active or not.
Typically, stiffness begins in the joints of the hands. It usually comes on slowly, although it can come on suddenly and affect multiple joints over one or two days.
4:Joint pain
Joint stiffness is often followed by joint tenderness or pain during movement or while at rest. This also affects both sides of the body equally.
In early RA, the most common sites for pain are the fingers and wrists. You may also experience pain in your knees, feet, ankles, or shoulders.
5:Minor joint swelling
Mild inflammation of the joints is typical early on, causing your joints to appear bigger than normal. This swelling is usually associated with the warmth of the joints.
Flare-ups can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and this pattern can be expected to increase with time. Subsequent flare-ups may be felt in the same joints or other joints.
6:Fever
When accompanied by other symptoms like joint pain and inflammation, a low-grade fever may be an early warning sign that you have RA.
However, a fever higher than 100°F (38°C) is more likely to be a sign of some other form of illness or infection.
7:Numbness and tingling
Inflammation of tendons can create pressure on your nerves. This may cause numbness, tingling, or a burning feeling in your hands referred to as carpal tunnel syndrome.
The joints of your hands or feet may even produce a squeak or crackling noise as damaged cartilage grinds against joints when you move.
8:Decrease in range of motion
Tumblr media
Inflammation in your joints can cause tendons and ligaments to become unstable or deformed. As the disease progresses, you may find yourself unable to bend or straighten some joints.
Although your range of motion may also be affected by pain, it’s important to engage in regular, gentle exercise.
Other early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis:
During the early stages of RA, you may feel a variety of symptoms, including:
General weakness or a feeling of malaise
•dry mouth
•dry, itchy, or inflamed eyes
•eye discharge
•difficulty sleeping
•chest pain when you breathe (pleurisy)
•hard bumps of tissue under the skin on your arms
•loss of appetite
•weight loss
See your doctor get a proper diagnosis if you’re experiencing some of the early symptoms of RA.
Treatment consists of self-care and therapy
Medication, physiotherapy or sometimes surgery helps reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
