This! All of this! LOK had a lot of moments when it felt like they couldn’t decide on what their target audience was. Now I personally enjoyed the slightly darker tone that LOK had, and I kinda wish they had just stuck with that. But at the same time I can understand that they wanted to reach as big an audience as possible. Yet they sacrificed the whole tone of the show in order to do that.

Not that ATLA was really any better: Jet’s “death” is a prime example of how weirdly ATLA handled certain things. But it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as LOK was. And I know the popular trend is to blame it on the way Nickelodeon treated the show, and they do share some of the blame. Yet I personally think Bryke has never been particularly good at creating complex and compelling plots like they tried to achieve in LOK.

LOK really was so sporadic about when they remembered they were a kids show and probably shouldn’t show people being casually murdered. Like in most (though definitely not all) of the fight scenes in avatar, they made a point to show the people who lost were still alive. Like when one of those tank things got crushed, they’d show the drivers crawling out groaning or whatever. But in LOK it was so half assed and so sporadic when they bothered to show the losers in a fight scene after being struck down or aside. Like, honestly at least half of the time we’re just supposed to infer they died. Which, yeah fine, that’s far more likely than them surviving and being fine and dandy after being thrown through a wall or off a plane or some shit. But it’s still just wild that the writing/animation or whatever was so all over the place. LOK really could not find it’s tone and stick to it. Like truly. One minute you have Meelo airbend-farting and the next you have Tarlok committing murder suicide. Talk about not being able to find its audience and tone/rhythm.

But yeah, I’m rambling. Point is, it’s wild how many time LOK just randomly murdered characters and made zero effort to act like a show on a kids channel (yes I understand most viewers were former atla fans, and so were most likely teenagers or adults, but the Nickelodeon is undoubtedly a kids channel). To the point that when they did remember to show a random character being alive post getting their ass kicked, it was genuinely surprising. Anyways this has been a ramble but all that being said, it’s honestly not surprising that the network pulled it from air and just had it air online (not saying I agree with the decision, just that I’m not surprised by it).

I didn’t grow up watching ATLA as a kid. I didn’t actually first watch it until I was already an adult. So for me I had a hard time getting into it because it felt too childish to me. Yet when I found LOK, I immediately fell in love with the darker and more gritty setting. Not to mention that I absolutely love steampunk, and the technology from LOK reminds me a lot of that.

They’re both excellent shows, don’t get me wrong. But they’re good in different ways, and people really need to stop trying to compare the two.

Im saying this because fans compare the narratives of atla and tlok but forget that not only tlok used the most "to the point" structure that is used to this day with shows (cartoon or not), with 10 to 13 episodes max instead of 20+ that was used in the 00's and that atla used as well, but also forget that atla is way focused on children, its narrative is also more easy to follow and all. Meanwhile tlok is for teens and young adults, who should be able do deduce and figure things out without the show needing to overexplain or show."
