It's hard for me to believe that at the beginning of this year, I didn't know a single one of my best friends in the world existed. But it's true!

How we got here

I'm not quite sure exactly when I started looking up Pedro Pascal on Tumblr, but it was sometime after February. I'd watched Game of Thrones and Oberyn was my favorite character, but I was in one of my periods of not being on Tumblr (I've had this account for about 10 years, but it's seen many fandoms and I haven't always been active).

I watched the first few episodes of The Last of Us that had come out - I was 3 episodes behind I think - and immediately looked up Joel Miller on Tumblr. How could I not? Anyway, give me ten minutes on this hellsite and a middle aged man with a huge imdb and watch me develop a hyperfixation.

So then I looked up interviews. I watched basically every interview this man ever did, but I remember that the Lie Detector interview and his appearance on the Talk Easy podcast are really what did me in. I went from admiring this man as an actor and thinking he's pretty to basically being in love with him.

Anyways....

I didn't mean to start reading fanfic? I come from the world of Destiel on AO3. I never wrote it, I just read copious amounts of it. I'd never read reader insert, much less straight reader insert, and I'd never written a word of anything even resembling a fanfiction.

But I found @prolix-yuy, @frannyzooey, @joelscruff, @fuckyeahdindjarin, and @ezrasbirdie (check the spreadsheet, y'all are at the very top!) and I was hooked.

Then I read Psychomanteum by @whatsnewalycat and Celestial Navigation by @write-and-buried and was inspired to parade my trauma around in a Dieter shaped trench coat: AGOY was born.

@beskarandblasters is the first person I really talked to on here. In fact, Kel is the one who introduced me to most of my friends on here. And we've been harassing each other on the daily since. I hope to 🦵 her in real life someday soon ❤️. I love you, bitch. You mean the world to me.

I could never ever ever list all of my dear friends I've made on here. Seriously, there are so many of you that mean the world to me. But I'm gonna list a few.

My cannibal crew @pr0ximamidnight and @atinylittlepain, without whom Love as Violence Dave (starving season), Head up his Ass Javi (in the a.m.), and the later editions of loser druggie Dieter (AGOY) would not exist - or at least they wouldn't be as good as they are.

The random college student I found by accident, decided to take under my wing, and then was subsequently taken under their wing bc it turns out they have more fandom experience and life advice than I can ever hope to have @idolatrybarbie. Bea, my darling, thanks for always letting me bitch, for showing me fics I never thought I'd be into (The Santa Claus AU Frankie Morales Free Use Kink, anyone) but that I often was into, for encouraging my writing, and for being fucking real with me.

The pedrostories crew, but especially @pedrorascal - I love screaming about Pedro with you at... 2:30 in the morning my time (we love time zones!). Thanks for letting me be a terrible mod for your fic archive blog and never getting mad at me for not doing my job. And for being a wonderful, kind, amazing person all the fucking time.

I'm being so serious when I say I could list at least 20 more people. People who brightened my day with a reblog or a message. Or who wrote a fic I still think about at least once a week. Or who made a gifset that is permanently etched into my brain. People I talked to in discords and most likely trauma dumped on and they listened and they cared and they let me hold their trauma in return. I love you guys so fucking much.

Conclusion

I never could have imagined I'd be a writer and run a fic rec blog at 24. Especially not for Pedro Pascal Characters. But here we are -- and I can honestly say it has been the highlight of my year. And I bought a house this year.

I have so many new friends and a new hobby (I never wrote at all before this) just because I wanted to Fuck That Old Man. Incredible.

I do! I’m absolutely tickled every time somebody likes something I wrote enough that they take the time to leave me a comment about it. I’ve even made a few friends that way!

Probably Into the Shining Sun? Even then, it’s angst with a very hopeful note to it. There’s enough angst in my real life; I like everything in my fics to turn out okay.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

So far, With a Little Help, because it ended with Eddie and Chrissy’s wedding!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Thankfully, I haven’t. I honestly think it will break my heart if it ever happens. I stumbled completely by accident across a post here on tumblr hating on GreatMage and I literally cried about that for two days. (Shameful!)

Nope, I live firmly in the fluff zone. All of my fics are rated a very mild T.

Haven’t tried one yet, but maybe someday, if I can think of a good idea!

With the help of Google Translate, I’ve scattered some bits of Welsh dialogue here and there throughout Next Time I Fall. Apparently I got most of it wrong. So I don’t think I’ll try any other languages unless I’m actually familiar with them!

Probably X-Files? And then there was that random embarrassing NSYNC stuff… we won’t talk about that. Those were all just scribbled in old journals, though. I never actually posted anything publicly until I found Ao3 last year.

I think each one is my favorite while I’m working on it! But I think I have to say Next Time I Fall, because the response to it was so much more than I expected, and people’s engagement with and investment in the story has given me so much joy.

It’s too uncomfortable, too creepy, too much of a nightmare situation for Cody to be in. It makes both characters so much worse. And I dare say Sierra’s a fun character when she isn’t thinking about Cody. But she gets so bad. She’s terrible in France, she’s terrible in China, she’s terrible in All Stars (what an insult to take her character in that direction when she could have been free of Cody).

did you ever imagine a random shitpost leading to you writing what has essentially become a romance empire?

LOL, sure as fuck didn't, although "random shitpost leads Sam into a weird new months-long rabbit hole" is not actually an uncommon occurrence for me. :D

I feel like somehow it might be weirder for the anon who sent me that ask that kicked it all off. For me it feels like I've just joined another fandom. Yes, on the one hand I'm the Word Of God and the only true source of new canon, but on the other hand once that basic canon was established -- once I had an essential cast of characters and a built world -- it got super easy to fuck around in it in the exact same way I would with, say, a fandom that's on extended hiatus. 

For me, writing new Shivadh books is very akin to what I've done in the past with Cartographer's Craft (a stand-in book seven before Deathly Hallows was written) or the Hiatus Continuations (filler while Heroes was on hiatus -- was that the writer's strike? Fuck I'm old) or post-movie fic after the first Avengers film. I’ve never found sequels so easy before, but then I’ve usually been looking at sequels to much more intense novels like Nameless or Dead Isle. The Shivadhverse isn’t...not intense, but it’s just silly enough that I don’t feel like I need to make anything deep. Twelve Points is actually probably going to be the deepest to date, in many ways, and it’s still like..

CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF: 

“Michaelis canonically has a very nice voice that he’s worked hard to preserve. He could have trained as a singer in his youth. I should have him at some point lead a chorus with some of the Eurovision performers.”

“That would be dumb and only really self-gratifying. You just like it when Michaelis is special.”

“Okay but...yes, that’s correct, and I’m the author. So I’m doing it anyway. He’s gonna sing a sea chanty and Buck’s gonna sing it with him. They’re gonna sing Mingulay Boat Song because I like it and I’m gonna put a verse in Shivadh.” 

“...sure, okay. Why not?”

END CONVERSATION, and then I wrote that scene.  

Anyway for that Anon who suggested it, they like...poked a beehive and a swarm of romance novels attacked. That must feel a little surreal!

I really do enjoy talking about various canons and headcanons on Tumblr, and I have fun too working on the new books and coming up with future plots. I may end up having to break off the Georgie/Monday romance for an entirely separate book, because the Royals And the Ramblers is looking to be a bit of a monster, and may be the first Shivadh novel that doesn't have a new central romance. Although between Gregory and Eddie's three separate weddings, Jerry and Alanna's ongoing "Why are we like this", and Michaelis and Jes navigating their newly blended family (plus an adopted granddaughter who is taking a while to warm up to Michaelis) there will still be plenty of romance. :D

Hey, so I'm here to talk about this. I'm the one in the screenshots about the Houston harassment. I've been sitting on this for a hot minute, so:

DesBea regularly talked to me about gore without any TW, as well as torture (actually what was essentially torture p0rn), even when I would ask her to stop because it was triggering me. I mentioned a few times that I am not a big angst person due to my mental health and that it doesn't make me comfortable, and she... did not care at all.

She never checked on me regarding me taking down my fics. She never asked if I was okay, if I wanted to talk about it, or what happened. She instead immediately blamed Red for my nervous breakdown, even at one point stating that I had said something like "Red makes me upset when she hates on Houston" a statement that was COMPLETLEY AND UTTERLY FALSE. When I was new in the fandom, before I'd ever talked to Red, I'd said I was nervous because I didn't know the degree of the joking or not. That was it. I understood that these comments about Houston were light-hearted and joking after a short time. I had actually never even MENTIONED Red at any point other than that initial time.

In fact, she ONLY complained that I took down my NaviMind fics.

It got to a point where I asked her to stop DM'ing me and then blocked her. I was extremely uncomfortable and felt very unsafe around her, for reasons of being disrespectful to me and my trauma, as well as the complete disregard for boundaries.

My message in Discord was "Hey, I'm sorry that whatever is happening has been so devastating. You're taking it out on everyone else at this point by saying everyone is cruel and no one loves you. That's unfair to me and the rest of us who have tried to be kind. I dealt with this already in the past. My groomer, ex, and so many others would constantly talk about how no one loved them and would refuse to listen to how much it hurts, and how devastating it to listen to people say how no one loves them, and when people try their hardest to stay but end up being told that's its not enough and it means nothing. I love you, and I want the best for you. And I refuse to put myself through this again. I cannot do this. I wish you the best, and I hope you can keep writing and find a job you like. Please do not contact me again, not until you've gotten help."

She got on an alternate account to message me, telling me that it was unfair I didn't give her a chance to defend herself, that she was "not those people and shouldn't be compared", something about therapy not being worth it, and then more or less tried to justify her behavior with: "I'm doing this because I might be ace but I'm not aro." I still have no fucking idea what this meant, other than possibly doing this because she had feelings for me or someone else in the group.

I blocked that account. I also had a severe panic attack because she was doing the exact shit that the people I mentioned, and knew I had originally left tumblr due to a stalker. I still do not use tumblr much because I'm cautious of the number of alternative accounts she has.

She then started using Red's Ramblers to block evade me (until she got banned), and using ao3 as a way to block evade as well.

Another very small, random thing, is she would "scold" me if my fanfics didn't line up with what she felt was canon accurate. Like, told me "um this is wrong cause Bain's an alien" about some random shit that I just . did not care about.

On the DesBea situation:

I would've added my thoughts to the original post, but as I am not a part of their Discord server, I didn't think that that was any bit appropriate. However, I wanted to share some of my own personal experiences with her, so that y'all can see that her behavior in their server is a continuing pattern--I don't have pictures of what she said as proof, sadly, but I will explain why.

I'm also gonna slap this under a Read More. I apologize for its length, but the original callout post should be enough of an explanation as to why this post needs to be as long as it is.

And, as a quick aside, if any of you wish to completely block DesBea, NOT HARASS HER OR FEED INTO HER BEHAVIOR IN ANY WAY, be aware that her usernames are:

If any of you know of any more, please tell me, and I will update this post. I don't want to be around her anymore than most people who've also interacted with her do.

About 2 years ago, I was invited to lilspacewolfie's server, Red's Ramblers, and I very quickly became a moderator there. Over time some people joined and a few left, but Ramblers remained stable through it all. DesBea joined later on into the server's lifespan, was around for awhile, said some nasty things, was given a warning (in the general), and just left without saying anything one day. After reading the screenshots in the callout post, I'm actually quite surprised by how much of a fit she threw in her efforts to make you guys apologize to her. Much like in the original post, with her gone from the server, things improved for everyone else, but the whole ordeal was rather confusing for all of us, in the aftermath.

See, DesBea was trying to be just as harmful in Ramblers, but it never really went anywhere.

Her hateful and self-pitying tendencies were the same around us as it was in their server. She really loved to talk shit about Yadoking and her writing--she would do this both in passing on random posts in the server, and while some of us were in-call when we'd play Payday 2 together as a group. It never smacked of genuine criticism for Yado's writing ability or style, as she only ever used childish language when doing it, and she would always do it right before she would try to push her own ideas and fics onto any of us who were online at the time. She was even trying to bully lilspacewolfie--which I will go more into later--over the tiniest of things. DesBea, in all of her posts, was either pushing someone else down, trying to make us all read about her rather disturbing fic ideas or headcanons, or trying to make herself look like the victim by claiming that she 'had bad experiences with abuse in the past' and that her 'PTSD was triggered over something someone in Ramblers had said' when we were trying to halt her bullshit.

It was all very aggravating to deal with, to say the least, but it also didn't have very much staying power, since most of us were just ignoring her in the server. And I do mean that, as most of the users in the Ramblers Discord server refused to interact with her posts over time, and people usually ignored her whenever she tried to insert herself into their conversations. It's probably why she left without much of a fight when lilspacewolfie posted "If you're being an asshole in this server, you better stop that shit right now" in the general chat. (That's not what she said, but y'all get the jist.)

Now, as for her bullying behavior in the server, I can't say for certain if she was targeting anyone besides lilspacewolfie (and badmouthing Yado from time to time, who wasn't even in the server), as I'm not a very outgoing or talkative individual. Despite the length of this post, I'm naturally quite taciturn, and even though I was a moderator in Ramblers, nobody in the server ever messaged me about any issues that they were having with anyone. But, I can say with accuracy that DesBea would go out of her way to harass lilspacewolfie--the creator and owner of the Red's Ramblers Discord server. Whenever she would join calls while we were playing together (but she was just watching from the server), she would only ever type in the voice chat channel, where she would wax poetic about her own fics and get rather offended that 'lilspacewolfie was intentionally ignoring her'. If we were playing a game of Payday 2 with her, DesBea would intentionally follow lilspacewolfie around as a character that she didn't particularly care for and spam callouts to scare and irritate her. And, when another user in the server was having an issue that caused them a lot of distress and made them go quiet for awhile (which had nothing to do with anyone or anything in Ramblers, when they were asked about it), DesBea tried to blame lilspacewolfie for it based on a lighthearted joke that she had made that dogged on Houston. So, not only was she trying to harass lilspacewolfie, but she was actively trying to turn others in the server against the owner of the Discord, as if she could muscle her out by making her out to be a villain.

Because she started insinuating that lilspacewolfie had caused another user to 'go into a depressive spiral, and chased them away from the server with her insensitive comments about Houston', I got involved to shut that shit down. DesBea was always weirdly attached to me, because she had DM'd me a few times on Tumblr in the past. I can only guess that she thought that these few smatterings of messages made me her friend, and since, apparently, some people here think of me as being "Mr. John Payday", she figured that she could use me as an intimidating wall to hide behind whenever she was called out on her bullshit.

She was wrong.

After a while of still trying to get others in the server to hate lilspacewolfie for 'being mean to one of the other users in the server'--who ended up coming back once their mental health had improved, by the way--she finally left after the "Stop being a dick" post, and it took us a couple days to notice. So, all-in-all, it was a very weird and irritating experience, but, in this context, it shows a worrying trend of behavior that she ended up spreading to other servers.

Now, like I kind of glossed over earlier, I WAS a moderator in Red's Ramblers. (I ended up leaving the server last month due to personal reasons that're not germane to this situation, and I have no desire to talk about it on this forum.) As I was still a mod before I left, I took the time to delete every post and reaction made by people who were no longer in the server--this amounted to 7 people, DesBea included. So, all of her posts that I could've screencapped as evidence are gone, and even if they were still there, I wouldn't have access to them anymore, anyway. In fact, the only thing that I have left is this picture I took of my response to her whole "You're a bad person for hating Houston" spiel that she was going on and on about:

(I censored this to give some privacy to the person who DesBea tried to use as a cudgel to smack lilspacewolfie with blame for their condition at the time. Even though most people here probably won't recognize them from their in-server nickname, I didn't want to take any chances.)

But, anyway, as you have read from the callout post and these personal anecdotes that I have provided, her behavior in their server was an unsurprising, but also a very worrying trend that has effected at least 2 Discord servers and a good chunk of some of the people who were or still are in the Payday fandom.

If anything that y'all have read over these posts has angered any of y'all to the point of harassing her, PLEASE DON'T. Don't send her hate--anonymously or not. Don't engage with her. Just block her and make sure that others in the fandom are aware of her behavior, so they can avoid her if they wish to as well.

And, again, please tell me if she's operating under any usernames other than the ones I've listed. I was tired of her bullshit a long time ago, and I have no desire to entertain her further under yet another pseudonym.
